Starting point is 00:03:25 My good buddy, my good friend Yeah, this was a fun time. You know, we got some good laughs. You can tell that the cast was really having a fun time. And as much as the characters were, I'm sure the cast is having even funner time. And, yeah, it was a loose, silly, you know, cop comedy with the cast of good characters, of distinct characters who were into shenanigans. Maybe not the most efficient of cops, but, you know, the fun guys.

Starting point is 00:03:58 All around. Yeah, fun much. You know, they have their bits. They have their shenanes. We can't finish that because I might get pistol whipped. Oh, that's right. But they shenan. And, um, yeah, ultimately, I think this was special thanks to Danny DeVito.

Starting point is 00:04:13 Shout out. Also, chicken fuckers was credited in the, yeah, as you were talking. I was like, ah, chicken fuckers. Love to see that. Love to see that. So many thanks. Anyway. Yeah.

Starting point is 00:04:24 K butts. Yeah. Yeah. You know, I laughed. I didn't like, I wasn't ripped up the seams with laughter, but you know what? Ultimately, I enjoyed myself. And I'm like, you know what? I see why this is a beloved classic comedy.

Starting point is 00:04:39 You know, there's definitely some bits that I will be taken from this and some things that have leaked from cultural osmosis into, you know, my sphere of references. And I was like, oh, it's fun to finally know where that's from. So, yeah, overall, giving it a thumbs up. didn't yeah i i i liked it it didn't blow me away but overall i would say i had a good time how about you i would agree generally i i had a good time i would say there is a lot of hilarious stuff in here i think yeah i what am i trying to say i laughed a lot i really liked the in the energy that the you know broken lizard gang and everybody around them too brought i feel like you know i know that broken lizard is a is a troop and i know they've done some other projects um

Starting point is 00:05:28 And so, like, it makes the most sense that their chemistry and their, you know, energy is on lock. But the fact that everybody else who showed up, I think it was important for a... Oh, Jesus. All right. Beautiful. Nice. Thank you for that. Yeah.

Starting point is 00:05:50 It's like, you can tell the core ensemble are used to working together and have that sort of, you know, natural flow and rhythm. But I thought everybody else around them as well did to the point where I was, you know, I assumed that like the main troopers would be the broken lizard guys, but I was like, I don't know, or some of the cops as well, but no, either way. They everybody like, you know, rose to the occasion. They all knew what movie they were in. I think you have, this is like an hour and 40 minutes. I feel like you don't have quite that much in terms of like inspired material. Like for a long time, this was walking a good line for me in terms of like, yes, it's silly. And yes, it's like a little bit stoner comedy. it's a little bit crude, it's a little bit, you know, irreverent and all those things.

Starting point is 00:06:36 But I do admire the commitment to character. I do admire the sort of like rascally energy. This is a movie that is sort of like it's got a loose plot and there are kind of a bunch of bits. And like as far as a movie like this goes, this could have felt way more all over the place. You know, it could have been, I think, a little bit more inspired on the back half. It's like once you kind of understand where this is going, there are times where you're like, you know, cool, you're kind of waiting for plot beats to happen. And like there's always something amusing going on, you know,

Starting point is 00:07:07 but after a certain point, the sort of like, I think you reach a bit of a plateau in terms of, again, just like the overall runtime. But that didn't really like detract greatly from the experience for me. Like I still feel, you know, warmly towards the movie. Had a good time. And as far as like sillier, more crass comedies go,

Starting point is 00:07:27 like this had like a good natured fun about it. Like this isn't, always my favorite flavor, but I thought like the energy was very affable. Sometimes these movies can come off like, you know, mean or broier, but I just love this sort of gleeful silliness. Yeah. And I sort of appreciated the game. I guess you get this transition happening because at first it's sort of like, oh, we just got to save the, it goes from like Save the Rec Center to like drug bust movie. So like when they're doing Save the Rec Center and it's like just a bunch of little vignettes about like, oh, we pulled this weird German couple of.

Starting point is 00:08:01 over and we went and responded to this thing and that thing. And like, everybody they meet is trying to screw with them. And they're the kind of people who are always screwing with each other. And so, like, it creates this kind of funny little universe where it's like, God, these guys really can't win for losing because, like, no matter what their intent is, either they're going to mess this up because they're screwing around or somebody else is just looking for trouble because everyone around here is just looking for trouble. Yeah.

Starting point is 00:08:25 And so I think I preferred that aspect of the first sort of half versus the first of first. two-thirds to the back part, although then the back part brought us Brian Cox getting to like wild out a little bit. Yeah. And just it was nice to see him get to do that. Yeah. I found the bits and the little, you know, offshoot things of the Save the Rec Center plot and just like the shenanigans, the most entertaining part. And yeah, the plot itself was like, good, good. I love something to be desired. But, you know, I felt like it's interesting because obviously we watched a lot of comedies here. Like it's not. It's not. It was a lot of, wasn't the funniest of the ronji comedies we've watched, but it also, you know, it's,

Starting point is 00:09:07 there's nothing worse than a comedy that doesn't make you laugh. And I would say that this did make me laugh. And yeah, you gain the, the, the fun that they're having. It's not a, there is a bro-y aspect to it, but it's not like too, I don't know if inside baseball is the right term, but it's, it's not so inaccessible where you're like, okay, like, I'm not, I'm just watching these guys do their thing. And like, it's, it's jokes that they're all laughing that nobody else is really into. I was like, okay, I see why these guys would be fun to hang around. Are they the most effective?

Starting point is 00:09:39 Probably not. But, you know, their energies can be infectious. And like, you know what? It'd be fun to, like, hang out with them, going to patrol with them at least once. Yeah, it's like the brorier stuff is silly and it's good-natured in the sense that, like, they're always kind of the butt of the joke or they're always kind of the idiot in the situation. Like, especially, like, Ursula is, like, the most sensible character. on screen and the most competent,

Starting point is 00:10:04 even though she's, like, relegated to the desk. And, like, their relationship, her and, uh, foster, you know, that's pretty earnest to generally. It's like, kind of cute. It's not like, yeah, the most, uh, invested thread, but like, that was the right level of romance for me where I was like, well, it's kind of cute and endearing. And then, you know, you get the sort of payoffs at the end when, you know,

Starting point is 00:10:24 oh, they think that she was this niche or whatever. Um, but yeah, yeah, it's like, even the bro-y stuff, like, is, sort of applied. in the most arguably appropriate scenarios. Like it's so shameless in that scene with the Porsche where they're like doing these mega closeups on like her cleavage and her panties and stuff. But it's also like it's so silly.

Starting point is 00:10:46 And these two characters who are being gazed upon this way are like all about it are like gleefully into the kink of the situation. So it then starts to kind of leave broie territory and it just becomes this like silly you know, free-loving, like bohemian, German, ridiculous. Like, it's, it just ascends in that moment into absurdity in a way that, again, I found very fun.

Starting point is 00:11:13 And, you know, you can, I think bro is, for me, is more palatable when tempered with the absurd, you know, and the fact that, again, like, they're at the station. They show up periodically just at random. There's hanging out. Yeah. Like, there's a good nature in there. And, again, because the characters are so, like, gung-ho for it. You know, like, you could tell that if this character was aware of the camera, she would probably be psyched.

Starting point is 00:11:35 So, like, there's something about that that kind of, it just gives it better dimension than the word broe implies. Yeah. Even though, yeah, this is like, I think for the kind of comedy, this is in terms of the ones we've are in, you know, kind of succession of the ones that we've watched, you're ranking anything off the top of your head is hard. I thought this was one of the better ones in terms of, like, I know we've seen some silly. and some crass comedies. Yeah, like the Austin Powers movies, the American Pies. The American Pies.

Starting point is 00:12:07 Or I'd even throw some of the, you know, like haunted house, stuff like that. And, you know, like silly, dumb, raunchy comedy can be a turnoff, you know. And I would put this more towards the middle or the upper of the ones that we've watched in terms of this isn't always like a genre I gravitate toward in my, comedy the most. But I had a lot of fun watching this. Like, there wasn't a moment really where it off put me very much, or like I fell out of it. Like, the worst I

Starting point is 00:12:41 could say is like, at a certain point, like the comedy kind of plateaus, but it still made me laugh after that point. There was still things I appreciated after that point. I'm still sort of mystified that Brian Cox is like a whole ass character in this movie and he just gets to be and he's committed and that's really charming. So

Starting point is 00:12:57 yeah, I thought it's going to be the straight man the whole time. They kind of just like falls into it with them. Yeah. And so, like, that's a part of the back half that I like more is sort of like, but then, you know, even though this is in the more drug bust part of the movie, uh, like he's like a part of the crew now. And like that's just such a fun, weird opportunity, especially with how we know his star has only risen and he's only, you know, become more ingrained as one of the great actors of our time. Yeah. Well, no, he gets he was silly from the jump because he bit the soap and spit out of the guy. Yeah. Like,

Starting point is 00:13:26 yeah, he knew what movie he was in. He was game to play and he played it straight. And he until it was appropriate to loosen the character up. Yeah. And I think this movie does survive well on its like grip of commitment to character. It's like they can act enough for the moments where they have to take something seriously like at the end with the confrontation with Farva

Starting point is 00:13:45 where he's like break it down and he's like, oh God, I've betrayed you guys. Like, it's not the like most dramatic performance but it's like this is convincing enough for what this is and you're committed enough for what this is and yeah, I would say that. It's like if all the the raunch comedies, this one feels like

Starting point is 00:14:01 it's generally more good nature. It has some aspects of its approach that I appreciate maybe a bit more because it's both raunch, but it's also still, I feel like they each picked and committed to character. And so like that helps the like crafting of it

Starting point is 00:14:17 be a little bit more than just like, oh, you guys got together and just like, you know, through stuff at the wall. Like this has enough of that feeling. Sometimes you see five writers and you're like, oh God, no. But like, I get it.

Starting point is 00:14:29 They're a troop. I like, that's fine. And I get that. like probably the scripting is a combination of like maybe we're all writing and contributing sketches or moments into the written script and some of that probably comes from the fact that there's a lot of improv but this didn't feel like a movie that was over like some movies like this can be way overrun with that freewheeling looseness in a way that isn't fun yeah after a while or that's like really sort of like someone should have edited this and i like that yeah like yeah

Starting point is 00:14:56 there's some of that comedy where you're like are they just bantering off each other but then there's other stuff that's in editing. The whole opening sequence where they're like, where is the car? What are the physics? Like, I like that they do just enough of that like peripheral whimsy. I still think that was my favorite bit of the movie,

Starting point is 00:15:12 the beginning of the opening. The opening was, yeah, was hilarious. Or even just like little detail, like where they're in the diner and they're chugging maple syrup. Oh, that was crazy.

Starting point is 00:15:20 Yeah. That was also one of them that was pretty great. Which is like unsettling to watch anyway, but also I'm like, these are the things that I think like that get skipped some sometimes in movies like this or movies in this lane that I appreciate them doing here. It's like this is just like these guys entertaining themselves in between things.

Starting point is 00:15:40 And I buy it, but it's also just like a quirky character detail that isn't like, yeah, it's like you had to come up with that. You had to be kind of made. It's a joke. It's like an actual joke, you know, not just like ribbing. You know, I think that's the thing. It's like broie comedy to me or comedies that are more like raunchy and crass. This one has a reputation for being feel more. more like a little, like they're supposed to be mean or spirited or something like that or more just sort of like ribbon insult oriented.

Starting point is 00:16:08 And even though there is that there's like so much other stuff that like all the things fall into proportion more than some of the other ones we've seen for me. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. But anyway, let's, uh, yeah. I was going to say, we'll have to do like a raunch comedy tier list someday. Like not the number one, but, uh, but yeah, this one, yeah, I thought this was pretty nice. Yeah.

Starting point is 00:16:28 Yeah. I'd say this is like right in the middle for me. Yeah, upper middle, I would say. Brandy Davis, let's hop in and see what the patronagex want to hear about, our royal rejects. There have been times where I forgot to go grocery shopping. Starting point is 00:19:40 fired pretty quick far will get yeah i think absolutely far will get you fired almost immediately um i mean i don't know i think okay so for me mac is the one where i'm like that's the wild card i'm like either i would have a blast with this guy or he would get me fired oh yeah i feel like thorny i i gravitate true because i'm like i think think he would be fun to hang out with and I don't feel like he would get me fired. Exactly. Yeah. I can keep my job.

Starting point is 00:20:06 Still have fun, but like within reason. I feel like I might have, see, that's the gamble. It's like Mac might be more fun if it is fun. Oh, yeah. But I might get fired. Or is the safer fun. Might not be as crazy. It would still be pretty fun.

Starting point is 00:20:57 That is one of them. I mean, that's two that was probably the main like sort of acid flashback one give me a god damn leader of cola yeah it's like a yeah give me a give me a leader of cola give me a goddamn leader of cola or come on come on real just get to it on yeah break voos in yes okay break fully yeah yeah because it's it's like french gobledygook instead of your friggin'liped lips yeah i mean that one for sure is is one of the moments because yeah i've just heard it said so many times and and that scene i've heard quoted many times um golly i mean the meow thing for sure the mouthing

Starting point is 00:21:46 was probably mine yeah yeah you're like like you like the cotton candy one the cotton candy was funny as i mean i love a comedically large prop and just there's one that almost made you cry whatever that whatever the thing the guy says it was very i don't know every now and again the the blunt statement joke works it's been overdone but uh just whatever he said about like move your giant cotton candy or you're like ridiculously large cotton candy was just very funny um yeah what was that moment shit there was a moment that like i can't remember because it wasn't what scene was it during i don't know i i kind of remember what what this was because you were a snort lab I think.

Starting point is 00:22:30 Yeah, you were responding to me responding to something. And I'm trying to remember what the thing was because it was like a subtle, it was like a little thing. Yeah, it was a small joke. Like talking to you miss it. But hey, man, they got you good with that one. I would say the meow one was one that really worked for me. Right now, yeah. Yeah, I mean, give me a goddamn leader of Colet.

Starting point is 00:22:50 Like, that's a scene I can imagine quoting. Like, it's harder for me. And I always want to yes and people when I've seen something. And then they start launching into quotes. And I'm like, I'm going to have to watch it again to get the quotes down. but also too the Germans in the car seem very funny

Starting point is 00:23:05 and them just like coming back I just thought that whole thread was really funny and to be fair I think that if you were you know if you prepared a salad before this movie that plateau might not happen you know like I bet that you know for this movie's

Starting point is 00:23:21 intended purpose you know it probably will bridge that ending gap I also just love that that they let you know it's exaggerated but they let Brian Cox like in the Scottish accent that whole thing I'll believe that when me shit

Starting point is 00:23:37 turns purple and smells like rainbow sharp it yeah and then yeah the Snawsberry's line for sure and just I mean yeah like the chicken fucker bit was was just like the way they edited that just the the illustration of like this guy

Starting point is 00:23:52 cannot orchestrate the joke does not understand the assignment of the choke also the kid licking the glass right before he said the snowsberry six six small spores just really funny yeah yeah absolutely that day that whole opening scene was a great

Starting point is 00:24:08 just bit yeah so also the bear and like hugging up the bear is pretty funny yeah there's a lot of great there are a lot of great bits so I don't know we'll have to

Starting point is 00:24:21 sorry some of these some of these do you have any syrup no the syrup bit The Sarah bit was great. Yeah. Yeah.

Starting point is 00:24:31 John Denver, that whole bit. There's a lot. Yeah, this is definitely, this is definitely a movie that you could just go over for the fine tooth comb and find delightful quotes from. But leave us yours in the comments. Starting point is 00:24:46 I'm curious, which guy is the funniest for y'all? The one that makes me laugh the hardest is Farva. Hmm. Farva was pretty good. and he's got to be in his own atmosphere so like props he's the loose cannon for sure um they all they'll have you know pretty pretty great bits

Starting point is 00:25:07 you know the um the newbie when he started making out with the german check that was pretty wild yeah it's pretty funny yeah um then just all chugging the syrup was also great I don't know if I have an individual like favorite I don't know if any of them like I mean outside of far of being unhinged I think they all kind of match each other comedically for me.

Starting point is 00:25:29 Yeah. If I had to elevate, I would say either, either Thorny or Mac, Jay or the other guy. I think I would edge them two out. Just because, like, Mac has just like this, I don't know, just like his energy, his, like, constant. He's, like, always, like, wired and always, like, you know, locked in. And I just thought that was very funny.

Starting point is 00:25:51 Oh, yeah, his cup bit was pretty funny. Yeah. And just as like a and just to cut to him like in the wide just like cheeked out just you know Yeah, I would say one of those two aside from far like yeah Farva is interesting because he's like sort of odd man out even though he's such a comedic force and I think then it works to have him be like sort of bigger than everybody and more extreme right So really take your pick it's a good and that's a testament the fact that like that's a good problem to have in your troop you want it to be be such that you're like i don't know you know like they're all serving their purpose yeah um and they're all funny in their own way so i appreciated that jay rustin a question ever jad rustin asked question ever been pulled over by police there yep yeah that's happened yep i mean never for

Starting point is 00:26:41 anything more than like a speeding or uh or once uh was late getting my registration sticker on there so they gave me a fix it ticket yeah i got pulled over a walk in the school because they thought I was robbing houses, but I was just a different black kid. You got... Wow! Yeah, I got a poem about it. I got profiled?

Starting point is 00:27:03 I have heard this poem, actually, now that I think about it. Your birthday party, that's crazy. Yeah, yeah, yeah, okay. So, yeah, and then I got pulled over, I think for a registration thing as well. And then I got pulled over because the cop thought I was on my phone,

Starting point is 00:27:18 but I was just checking my GPS. Yeah. So, yeah, those are my times. but nothing fun like this that would have been a trip me out if I was you know got pulled over and they started doing the reverse and doing the bits

Starting point is 00:27:31 and I'm like what that's going on I'm scared I'm black God yeah I mean I I was on the way back from a trip to New York the one time I was ever in New York so far and I was late

Starting point is 00:27:45 to get into the airport so I was pedaled to the metal I got pulled over for that which did not I just caught that flight but damn and then yeah my pulling over experiences have mostly been they're always like it's always tense and I've had to do the thing before

Starting point is 00:28:00 where they're like follow my freaking same but uh you know so yeah I don't know you're always sitting there and you're like this is an all you sit there and wonder to yourself because you're like I'm sure I'm not acting completely natural because like I don't know now I'm high alert but I'm sure that they're used to

Starting point is 00:28:16 dealing with people who are like this and I don't know I'm sure a drunk or high or whatever they're looking for a person probably has other tells, so it's fine, whatever. Yeah. Anywho, we got a lot of, I just pulled up the IMDB trivia here to see. Apparently, the couple that Farva calls chicken fuckers are actually Kevin Heffernan's parents. Oh, no way.

Starting point is 00:28:37 Called his own parents that. That's hilarious. They knew he was going to say something rude, but they weren't prepared for that particular line. In the syrup chugging scene in the diner, the first few takes were done with the actors drinking thick iced tea from syrup containers. The iced tea didn't look realistic enough. Real syrup was brought in and the actors did several takes in which they actually chugged entire bottles of syrup.

Starting point is 00:28:59 These are the takes you see in the close-ups. However, some of the wide shots of the iced tea were kept in. Nice. That is fucking dedication to the bit, boy. Oof. Jesus or Christa, the bulletproof cup scene was shot just outside a real-life prison while Steve Lemmy stood there wearing just a cup. Inmates were pressed against the fence yelling at him. Starting point is 00:29:24 Rabbit is stuffed in a locker covered in shaving cream. He was actually covered in menthol shaving cream. The crew didn't know that menthol burned skin if left for too long. After the scene, Eric Stolhansky was sent next door to a firehouse to get hosed off. Poor guy. That's insanity. When Ursula hits Foster in the head with the snow cone, there is a setup to indicate

Starting point is 00:29:49 that the snow cone is solid. A mid-scene switch. was supposed to replace the hard stogo with the softer one, but the switch didn't happen for several takes. Paul Soder took a solid block of ice to the head about nine times. No, my God, right? Poor guy.

Starting point is 00:30:03 The bar of soap, Oh, Hanigan bites. Oh, Hagen, sorry, bites was made out of white chocolate. Brian Cox has diabetes and got very upset after biting into the bar. The crew had to get a sugar-free version. Holy crap. That's not a comfortable moment on set, boy. Especially if we're all trying to have fun here. Damn.

Starting point is 00:30:25 In the scene during the award ceremony for the police drug busts, state police drug bust where Farva continuously vomits into a toilet. It was actually Kevin Heffernan vomiting. This process can be seen in the outset. Wow. Yep. Jesus. What do they do to make them vomit like that?

Starting point is 00:30:43 Did they give them the Ipacac in the cat game scene? The word meow is said 11 times. Nice. He won. He won. The catering company that worked on the entire production of this film fully immersed themselves and the hijinks

Starting point is 00:31:02 going on during filming. Ruse Keani and Chris Brown of Dr. Detroit fame were the main pranksters. It is said that they would serve the cast's raw or rubber eggs for dinner. The Broken Lizard Comedy Trooping considered making the honorary members after Connie captured

Starting point is 00:31:19 Kiani captured 32 live skunks and put them in the trailer of Kevin Everna. That's so mean. Pepper name is reported to have had said this situation stinks. Yeah, you can say that again. Is that real? I hope not. But also, I wish I could see that.

Starting point is 00:31:37 A repeated gag. Captain O'Hagan is frequently filmed with his head directly in front of an animal mount so that he appears to have antlers. I'm going to have to go back and look at that. I didn't even notice that. The film is originally supposed to be set in the 1970s. When Farva's handcuff to the toilet, it's a lime that is taped to his mouth.

Starting point is 00:31:56 The gun that the Spurbury captain pulls out in the first one of Beggazine is actually a BB gun. And you can see apparently the mechanism, as it's an older model. The German couple became Dutch in the German dubbing because it was pointless to translate from German to German. That's fun. We got Jim Gaffigan in there. Oh, and his name is a callback to his Law & Order appearance as Larry Johnson. That's fun. Let's see.

Starting point is 00:32:23 first scene that was filmed with Brian Cox, the scene on his porch, where he's reading the letter from the governor. The scene was supposed to have the lines typed out on them. Broken Lizard didn't know that when they started the scene, so they typed the lines of quickly and gave it back to him. If you look closely, you can see some whiteout marks from what the letter originally said. I kind of noticed that, actually. Yeah, guys, this has been a fun one.

Starting point is 00:32:48 This has been a good one. And I noticed that too. They kept doing bananas fostered. jokes. You called a one out, I called one out. Yeah, yeah. Nice. Guys, leave us your thoughts on Super Troopers.
