Team America: World Police Reaction, Recap, Commentary, Analysis, & Spoiler Review!! Join Greg Alba, Aaron Alexander, and John Humphrey as they dive into the 2004 cult classic that redefined political satire—Team America: World Police. Directed by Trey Parker & Matt Stone (South Park, Cannibal! The Musical), this uproarious puppet-driven film takes aim at global terrorism, American militarism, and Hollywood excess with biting humor and jaw-dropping musical numbers. Team America follows an elite, over-the-top task force of marionette operatives as they confront the world’s most dangerous threats. The film features unforgettable moments like the explosive “America, F**k Yeah!” the country elegy "Freedom Isn't Free," the "Montage" song, & Kim Jong Il's showstopping "I'm So Ronery" along with the host of outrageous action sequences that blend crude comedy with sharp social commentary. The film also parodies famous actors and iconic Hollywood personas—taking playful jabs at stars such as Alec Baldwin, Michael Moore, Matt Damon, Tim Robbins, Susan Sarandon, George Clooney, Danny Glover, Ethan Hawke, Helen Hunt, Samuel L Jackson, Liv Tyler, Martin Sheen, Sean Penn, Ben Affleck, Julianne Moore, and others—adding an extra layer of hilarity and cultural critique. Greg, Aaron, & John take in every outrageous detail—from the puppet mayhem and overblown action to the overall construction & craftsmanship that have made this film a lasting favorite among satirical cinema enthusiasts. Starting point is 00:01:03 More on them in just a bit. All right, Reject Nation, well, we just watched Team America, World Police. I'll go to you first, John. How are you feeling? You had a stressful-ass time today, and now we have just watched the comedy. What are your honest thoughts? Are your feelings change at all? You're still stressed?
Starting point is 00:01:35 I certainly feel... I won't interrupt you. Yeah, no, it's good. But, uh... Fuck you go, man. A, A, A. America. I feel very patriotic right now.
Starting point is 00:01:53 No, I feel, yes, elevated. I was transported for a while. This is actually a fun movie to put on... on such a day as this type of day, partly because you're transported into a world that's like so far removed, by virtue of the fact that, yeah, you have all these interesting miniatures and sets
Starting point is 00:02:14 and these marionette puppets, and it's just like so different from what, at least I am normally used to looking at, you know, even in the puppeteering space, I don't see as many marionettes as other things. And yes, I mean, you know, this has the charge, of what like a south anything that comes from trademark park parker and matt stone does where it's like yeah it's a bit crass and crude and it's trying to be you know sort of as offensive as it can be
Starting point is 00:02:41 on kind of every level that it attempts and also has you know some surprising heart thrown in for you know good measure and it does have in its own unique way at least a real sense of commentary it really feels like they are attempting to make a comment. And I know that, you know, the political leanings of Trey Parker and Matt Stone are always up for debate amongst people. I feel like they are often, I don't know if they're actually libertarians, or they just kind of fall into that, you know, category often in popular discourse. But yes, like as a action movie from the time that this came out, you know, you're in a post-9-11 Bush era. Yeah, like this hyper crazy
Starting point is 00:03:26 jingoistic just like absurd yeah world police force as I feel like the conversation was often about us trying to be at the time and throughout our sort of you know history as we've grown a greater access and grasp on the rest of the world now that we're established of the American experiment
Starting point is 00:03:44 so yeah it does sort of nicely highlight the sort of narrow POV on just other cultures of the world and and how we depict them and also of how we approach, you know, Warcraft, but also, you know, it's certainly filtered through a certain, yeah, like layer of ignorance, I suppose, that helps the satire a lot.
Starting point is 00:04:09 Like, you know, I think you pointed out at some point there, and that, like, you might be able to watch this depending on who you are and what you've seen in this life and what you've read in this life, that, you know, you might see this and not register the satire. Yeah. I think. What I was talking about? You said that?
Starting point is 00:04:24 I did that. No, I did. I did. I did. Come now. You could miss the satire. And I feel like a lot of people in high school were probably really into this and probably, I know for a fact, kids were doing Kim Jong voice a lot. So like, yeah, there are ways in which this may be, if you're putting it into the hands of people who don't quite get the full spectrum of it, you know, it might inspire some off-color behaviors. But, you know, it's all, it's part and parcel with what kind of. comes with a Trey Parker, Matt Stone thing, and I found this to be very bonkers in a way that I mostly enjoy. And, yes, the sort of ultimate lay of, yeah, having this world terrorist sort of coalition then going up against, but ultimately aligning with, like, actors and just people in the public eye who are, like, trying to do something with their power, but don't quite know what or how. Like, it's pretty funny. And then all the songs and stuff. Yeah, I enjoyed myself.
Starting point is 00:05:26 There's plenty, I feel like, to talk about with a movie like this and plenty of ways to look at, like, how does it hold up? And how is its commentary on all of the things that it comments on, not just like how we behave as America through the eye of an action movie lens. But, yeah, I was just really dazzled by the craftsmanship. I think that was my favorite thing. It was, like, watching something again that I'm like, I don't think anybody would pay for this nowadays unless it was, like, way cheaper.
Starting point is 00:05:52 Like, I don't know. I'm curious to know how much this cost. and what it made because this seems like one of those like oh my god we have the opportunity and we clearly can do whatever we want because south park generally speaking so let's throw this big dice roll and like make this expensive ass weird silly puppet movie and like that just seems like something a studio would be like waha ha ha you know which is very funny to me and like the love and craftsmanship that goes into so many of the you know set pieces and sets and all the other things combined with like the weird uncanny valley of the puppets is like it's like
Starting point is 00:06:23 silly and dumb in a very impressive way. I love I love like really like crafted silliness I suppose and this had a lot of that yes
Starting point is 00:06:34 I'm glad you liked it John it was fun I had a good time Aaron I I get Aaron's down the middle on this
Starting point is 00:06:42 I don't feel like it's yeah I'm not saying it's like a perfect movie but for what it is it's enjoyable what I will say is that I did like it more than a South Park movie
Starting point is 00:06:52 but no buts I moved it was bothering me so I moved that's why that's why I did that as he was talking
Starting point is 00:07:00 I don't know if you know it was there it was there was there looking at it isn't my sight my eye vision sight I was being helpful
Starting point is 00:07:07 anyway I can say that I like this movie I think that I definitely did laugh I definitely did laugh there were bits that did get me give me moments
Starting point is 00:07:19 of levity so to speak that's granted that's the purpose of this movie, so make you laugh. It's comedy. And I really appreciated the commentary that it was making about America's role in the world and this hyper patriotism that, you know, the people have when, you know, especially at this time in America, but without really examining the consequences of what that patriotism.
Starting point is 00:07:46 Something you're saying keeps setting my phone off. I don't know what it is. Yeah, I'm going to keep saying it. So keep on airplane, though, I don't understand. Just keep looking at it until it's set again. America, America, America. Document what he's saying. But yeah, I think that I was really impressed with how they were able to make a feature film based off of something that seemed like it could be like a short half-hour gag.
Starting point is 00:08:17 And it walked this line of being parody while also having a semblance of kind of. taking itself seriously like it it walked the beats of actually having a plot of this type of a movie within a genre doing it but acknowledging the the tropey ridiculousness of of some of those things um it's i i feel a little conflicted because i mostly laughed and like i feel like some of the bits you guys like the throw-up bit was probably my favorite bit in the movie just like that was the gag didn't uh didn't end but it And also, like, I don't fucking muggle my liberal brain fucking, I'm all like, I understand that, you know, some of the, uh, the accents that they were doing in the movie were like, it was supposed to be supposed to be funny taking light. And ours also part of me is like, you know, because of the time, I'm like, because of the time, I also was like, man, I feel like people were actually like Middle Eastern.
Starting point is 00:09:16 People would, like, I actually talked to them and would say, like, what the things they're saying in this movie just because it's just like, oh, this is like cultural osmosis and whatnot. But I think that the way that they were able to execute what they were attempting to do was very well handled, even if all the jokes didn't work for me. I appreciated how impressive the production of it was. And can't acknowledge that there are things that it's weird because at some point it feels, some parts feel dated and other parts still feel relevant, like all the stuff with the actors. because that's definitely still very prevalent, even today, as Greg crosses his legs and his arms and looks at me. But I just thought it was fun. It's a little cold in here. It is a little cold.
Starting point is 00:10:05 As cold, I'm hungry, and I, America, I had fun. I had fun. It's not my traditional cup of tea. I like more like absurdist stuff. But for the times that I did laugh, boy, did I laugh. And that's how I feel. back to you Greg holding back a little bit I want to hear what you didn't what you didn't like
Starting point is 00:10:28 um all the humor worked for me I thought there's parts where I were just like oof that's I don't really find that very funny not because I'm like have my panties in a bunch I was just like I don't know some of the stuff felt like fucking um I don't know like little early 2000 little second little middle school to me
Starting point is 00:10:47 a little edge lord yeah a lot of edge lord in here there's certainly jokes here and there, and I was like, I didn't need that, but thank you. Okay, yeah, and it makes me think of like, because we know we have, like, channels like like the Daily Wire and like Angel Studios, making like their more conservative movies and kind of to build on the fact that there are movies that are, that something like this could go over people's heads
Starting point is 00:11:13 that aren't as, I guess, aware, politically aware of what they're trying to do because I feel like politics have gotten to such a point, of division being so anti-woke that this would speak to that on a like a on a genuine level to them rather than being something that they're trying to make a commentary of that's the problem of satire yeah and it makes me think of something like well i i think if there was the if republicans if hardcore republicans if people on the hard right and far left watch this i feel like people on the far left would laugh at certain parts of how it mocks far right points of views and then people and they would isolate that when talking about it on
Starting point is 00:11:56 youtube and i think there's other moments like the actors where i think people on the far right would use that as to to push their agenda so i think that's the i think that's what they do is they attack they do attack all sides in this movie so i feel like they make it pretty fair no yeah for the most part they they make it pretty fair i can say that i can agree with that Um, yeah, it was, like I said, it was all right. It was okay. Um, I probably wouldn't watch it again. Like, you know, the age's own. Like, I'm not, I'm not going to shame if this was like your bread and butter is your favorite movie growing up. I get it. It's like from the early 2000s. It's very edgy early 2000s coded. And, you know, I'm not a man in the early 2000s. Even though some stuff still work for me. And sometimes comedy's universal. Other times it ages like milk. And, um, damn. Some cartons do be expired, but that's okay. That's okay. Greg, toss that milk.
Starting point is 00:12:59 How'd you feel, man? I feel like you guys were laughing about more than I was during this. But I did have laughs. I will say that. Reject Nation, put on some weight over the holidays. So in the past month, I've been on a pretty strict macro counting diet. I've got to say, I'm feeling better than ever. At the same time, you've got to be real about something.
Starting point is 00:13:17 Sticking to macros means early having to factor out a lot when you're trying to pick meals and when life gets busy that's when there's a chance to get all fall apart that's why when i don't have something to cook but i still need something that fits within my diet i go for this bad boy and i've seen me drinking on camera before he'll so happy just got a fresh order i have definitely probably ordered more personally for this household than they've ever paid me i don't know if that's true but it's i feel confident in that here and hules black condition ready to drink is a complete meal in a bottle packed with 35 grams of protein 27 to 7 potential vitamins and minerals. You're not just filling up. You're fueling up.
Starting point is 00:13:55 And here's why I love it. A, it's tasty. I've tried a lot of plant-based ones, especially. And this one's actually great. All my vegan friends and I, we get together and we talk about how great fuel is. It's efficient. Obviously, there's no cooking. There's no prep. Just grab it, drink it, and you're good to go. Low sugar, high protein, great macros. Whether you're tracking your intake or just want to balance meal. This one generally checks every box. My guy, I haven't even read that one yet. Slow release carbs. Just keeps getting better. It's a benefit again when he's ready to go drinks all the guesswork out of having to eat well and best part is the thing's affordable too each bottle is a meal that costs less than five bucks making it a no-brainer if you're
Starting point is 00:14:28 looking for a quick nutritious option so if you want to give it a try a great way to support the channel but more importantly support your body you can go to huel.com use my code rejects and get 15% off your first order plus a free gift what's the gift you'll find out it's a gift start feeling your body even on the go trust me you'll love it reject nation fun fact fantasy football is now a part of my life why because because my wife and her friends are obsessed with it. So I'm constantly hearing about things I've never heard about before. Like, who's getting benched, who's a sleeper pick,
Starting point is 00:14:58 and why someone's entire weekend was ruined over a bad play? And at this point, I figured might as well support my wife the extra mile and get in there myself. And that's why I want to think prize picks. And my wife will tell you I'm not the sharpest tool in the show when it comes to stuff like this, but price fix is the easiest way to play daily fantasy sports. No complicated drafts, no long-term commitments.
Starting point is 00:15:18 You just pick two to six players, decide if they'll get them. more or less, then there's stat projections, like passing yards, points, or rebound, sports terms, and if you get it right, you win. It's that easy, and it's quick. You can make your picks in under a minute, way less stressful than managing a full fantasy team, and you don't need to be a hardcore sports fan either. Believe me, you don't, whether you casually follow games, or go full deep dive mode. It's fun either way.
Starting point is 00:15:43 And the flex play. Flex play means you can still win even if you miss one pick, so it's not all or nothing. And here's the best part. Price Pix is available in most states, including this lovely state, California, Texas, Georgia, so it's so it's so easy to jump in. So it would be an amazing thing for yourself and to support the channel as well. You could download the Price Pix app today. Use code Rejects and get $50 instantly when you play just $5. You don't even have to win to get the bonus.
Starting point is 00:16:10 Prize picks, people, run your game. I was more impressed then. Do you guys hear that outside? I think that's all the people hitting the dislike button for Aaron. I think I did hear it. Yeah. I was trying to be nice. You all told me to go in.
Starting point is 00:16:27 No, man. I'm not like your opinion is going to affect mine. I get it. No, I mean, I think comedy of all things is super subjective. I don't feel like there's any reason to be. At the end of the day, it's like the kind of, A, you don't really get comedy movies anymore. You really don't.
Starting point is 00:16:44 And be what comedy, and there is a certain, just like with any job. genre, action, horror. There's, like, a certain type of action movie that keeps coming around, a certain type of horror movie, it keeps coming around at a certain period. And then now it's like, I don't really know what you have quantified comedy as. I feel like the stand-up scene is really strong.
Starting point is 00:17:03 But, like, comedy movies, not so much. And there, of course, there are parts that are a little bit, like, just super juvenile humor. But I guess to me, I was able, and maybe, I'm not saying this is not what you, you weren't able to understand, just because. just because you get it doesn't mean you have to like it so I'm not going to try to convince you to like something right or that you didn't get it or that you didn't get it yeah yeah is that
Starting point is 00:17:32 like when it comes to the like the Asian jokes or like with the the R place the R the L or the or the Dyrka Durka with the Middle Eastern people I think they're making fun the whole point is to not laugh at like Middle Eastern people or Asian people I think the point is to laugh at the interpretations that a lot of movies and media will lay down about like they're making fun of that of what of the of the typical portrayals or the way our point like it's ridiculous when you're watching it it's ridiculous and there are people who have this simplistic racial point of view towards certain groups or things and I'd like that the movie was inhabiting that in it for making fun of it in a way that was kind of like they used the action genre tropes in order to magnify um the in order to magnify racial point of views or to magnify uh patriotism when it turns to american propaganda i so i guess i was just getting a big kick out of it
Starting point is 00:18:44 there are times where it's like yeah it's a little bit of an annoying scene there there are times where i would find myself a little bit annoyed or there are times where i would find myself a little bit annoyed or there are times I would be not I'm not there's like a joke every five seconds in this movie so not every joke is funny to be but there's a lot of it is really funny to me because I was also
Starting point is 00:19:01 impressed with like the craft of it and the like the practicality of what they assembled like this looks like a movie where they actually really cared about how they turned out like there's a lot of effort in the in in the in the
Starting point is 00:19:19 they clearly watch a lot of action movies with love and they threw that in here you could tell that they actually probably like action films as much as they were spoofing what an action movie is so I think it works on like a
Starting point is 00:19:35 multiple meta spoof level of something that mad just to be a political comedy but using the backdrop of an action spoof there's something kind of clever to me about it and while some stuff is like just very very edgy and very much like racially charged i always i never felt like i was laughing at the race i felt
Starting point is 00:19:55 like i was laughing at the people who they're making fun of the people who interpret that way yeah i found it more impressive than funny but i definitely understand understandable yeah but like the way they also drive home the way we are as americans with war and stuff and i'm no political expert at all um but you know like there's this obvious moments in you like when they're showing up like we got to stop weapons of mass destruction and terrorists and then they're just like blowing up the country they're in it and I mean yeah they keep
Starting point is 00:20:25 cutting to these wide chain reactions the shit that we do in the name of stopping terrorism you know yeah the name of stopping terrorists where we become terrorists ourselves yeah yeah killing and maiming and destroying in the name of peace yeah yeah so I thought I thought it was funny I mean like there's
Starting point is 00:20:42 limitations I think in storytelling of what you can as I could see a version nowadays where if they didn't, as much as there's like puppet gags, eventually you get used to the novelty of the puppetry and like puppet, puppet jokes stopped working after a certain point because it's like, yeah, we get it. It's funny the first like half hour,
Starting point is 00:20:59 40 minutes maybe. You're right up to the SCX scene. But after a certain point, yeah, it's like I do think you can do another version where you're perhaps a little bit more character because there was moments where there was heart. I was like, I know they're like making fun of the action movie
Starting point is 00:21:15 heart tropes. Yeah. but it's actually helping make this movie more interesting you know yeah it has just enough of that stuff it's weird it has like enough context to where this hasn't been like outright shunned as like a you know like a truly off putting offensive in a in a strong sense it's like it's like low it's like lower case offensive it's making fun with the stereotype yeah yeah yeah in a large like going like hardcore extreme about it yeah yeah it's the same like every other I mean, it's like the American characters, you know, there are a handful of accents. There's the guy who swears all the time.
Starting point is 00:21:51 And then they're like the silly American South accents. And then everybody who's from somewhere else just has like the boilerplate, gibberish salad that like anybody, you know, is so inclined might do just at like a party. If they're trying to impersonate somebody like, it is that. It's like, yeah, it's the, if you're just trying to like whip up off the dome a caricature of some other race or language, that's what you're used to hearing. you know out there you know in at least places like america where you know we're looking outward from and uh yeah it speaks to yeah it's it speaks to that kind of but i would never limited perspective i think i think it's an equal opportunity film in the sense that it's it's making fun of all things fairly equally and also making fun of americans in the the the tropes
Starting point is 00:22:39 of the action film so i'm not like i'm not like fucking pearl clutched offended by the movie I think that I'm in like a place Defending myself I think in terms of like Your comedy It makes sense to me Like you just don't find it
Starting point is 00:22:50 That funny Like it's like Like that's totally fine To watch a comedy And be like That just wasn't that funny To me it's a comedy Yeah
Starting point is 00:22:58 And there is a ton If you don't laugh you don't laugh I did laugh though There were parts that I did find funny It just It wasn't like But gusting Except for one scene
Starting point is 00:23:06 Yeah And I think it's different When there's like a camera pointed You know Like I think What I mean by that is I think sometimes a movie where it's not funny
Starting point is 00:23:16 the parts that are that can be like irate or annoying can perhaps feel more annoying because you might feel like you need to be laughing because you're reacting or something I don't know because if I'm at home with a comedy there's so much comedies I've watched at home that I'm like yeah I like that but I wasn't really laughing
Starting point is 00:23:35 that's yeah I think that's more so I felt but sometimes when there's a camera you do feel like oh man I wish this movie was making me laugh more yeah because there's a camera here. It's going to look like I don't like. Yeah. There's quite a few moments in this movie where I was like, that was funny, but I'd actually laugh at it because I just internally thought it was funny more so than just like outwardly expressing it. So yeah, it's, it's, I don't know, it was a middle of the road experience for me, but I didn't dislike it. I just didn't love it. That's what that's
Starting point is 00:24:03 fair. That's fair. And there's a, there's a, I have to imagine it's a high variation in mileage for like how much certain, like you said, puppetry gags are going. going to, like, carry it because I feel like for certain, for some type of viewer that might work for a lot longer. And then there are certain jokes where you're like, this is only funny because it's puppets. Well, sometimes if the puppet stuff, it looked genuinely cool. Yeah. It was like a cool looking movie. And the original soundtracks were really funny to me. The montage song might have been. Like, the America song is like, you know, classic. But the montage song, I thought was brilliant. And to edit it over like a montage. And this looks expensive
Starting point is 00:24:42 as hell. I would like to know how, let me, let me ask Siri and then we'll wrap this up. Or Google. Google. How long did it take to make Cat, I got to America, Team America. Team America. Drum roll.
Starting point is 00:25:00 I bet this took it, yeah, this had to have taken a minute. It took years to make it. Oh, wow. How many? No specific. I like to years. But yeah, I'm like watching the opening. I'm like, Man, this is opening would take like six months. Seems like it would.
Starting point is 00:25:16 I mean, yeah. Aaron is shitting all over it. I know. Boomy. Ruining the entire experience for everyone. No, man. It's totally fair. I had a fun time.
Starting point is 00:25:26 John had a fun time. Did have a fun time. Aaron had an all right time. And that's okay. That's okay. You just won't watch anything from these guys anymore. I will protect you. I will protect you.
