We all need someone to make us believe.

More on them in just a bit.
John, I think I've spoken long enough.
I think the people want to watch,
so should we get right into this?
We should get right into this.
Tenacious D in the pick of destiny.
Commence.
It's weird, because this definitely, like,
it gets wild and reaches, you know,
into a lot of places and stuff like that.
There are some ways
in which I wish it had been
maybe even a bit more wild
but at the same time, yeah.
This is the kind of movie where I can see
if this is absolutely your bag,
how you would love to throw this on frequently
and hang out with it.
As, again, a passing fan of tenacious D
and a fan of rock in general.
Like, I had a good time, certainly.
It could be, yeah, better,
it could be more inspired.
There are certain jokes that could be more clever
or more interesting, but there were a handful
of bits and guys,
gags that I did find inspired and fun and wild and yeah that took me by surprise so uh so i'm
feel pretty good like i had a good time uh you know how did you feel uh i feel great uh it's definitely
put me in a good mood uh as as mentioned i'm a very novice tenacious d fan i do know these
two actors or at least jack black very well and i've seen kyle gass and a few things but um i
liked again this film knew what it was and wanted to be but i do agree with you on what
you're saying and, you know, a little more inspired. But having said all that, I did like that
it kind of took that approach of kind of being a little bit of a biography in just terms of
like Jack Black story at the beginning, him like being obsessed with Rock. I assume that was
possibly what happened. I don't know his real biopic in terms of his backstory in real life.
This is, I would say, heavily embellished. Embelished, okay. Well, and humorized. Whatever the
So at least in the story, I do like though, you know, how they had in the story, like the way they met.
And then they were balancing out with the supernatural stuff.
Like, I didn't expect, I knew we were obviously doing the musical stuff at the beginning.
And I liked the way that I thought it was actually creative in that way.
But I didn't expect it to go the supernatural way.
But I actually, I gravitated towards that.
And I thought that was a lot of fun, especially when Ben Stiller laid that out.
I was like, oh, my God, we're actually going here.
I love the Ben Stiller.
Yeah. The Ben Stiller bit was one of my favorite gags.
Yeah, for sure. That was fun. And they kind of preluded to that, too, with, like, I think in the title card with showing the stuff, like, the ancient drawings and all that stuff. So they kind of...
The tarot, I bet the tarot cards, like, lay out a lot of the journey for you.
Yeah. So I think on repeat viewing, like, you definitely get a little more bang for your buck, too, like seeing, oh, okay, they laid out some stuff here as well. So, yeah, and then there were some fun cameos from Amy Poehler, Colin Hanks.
Andy Adams and then you got a Tim Robbins fun fun cabio there but yeah no I enjoyed it obviously
these two they they know each other in real life and they're obviously friends and their bandmates so
I really love their chemistry their interactions I thought like I'm sure so many scenes too were
just like all right there's the the scenario just you guys do your thing improvise and I thought
I again I just thought it was hysterical from that perspective because sometimes like those are
where your most inspired choices come from is improvising.
But yeah, and also too, I'm very curious.
We were talking about it during the reaction
because I know for a fact on Grandma's boy,
they were using real ganja.
So I'm curious if that's what they were doing here.
I could see it.
I mean, it definitely seems like the kind of movie.
And, you know, I mean, even though they got clearly
a budget to make this to some extent,
you know, this seems like the kind of group
and production where that would be
likely to happen but it is it's fun too to see
Liam Lynch who I associate with more DIY
and you know
internet style humor and to see him
in you know helming a movie like this
and granted they have like a working relationship and stuff like that but you know
like there were a few moments where like oh the car chase like actually
kind of feels like a bit of a car chase you know like there's some actual stunts in
here uh so yeah like it didn't feel
janky yeah but I but I did like throughout all the supernatural
and stuff like that, the theme of friendship
and what we do for each other.
I did thought that, like, you know,
regardless of whatever you think of the comedy,
which I personally thought hit,
but I'm very easily too easy to amuse.
So, you know, take that for what it is.
It's all subjective.
I thought it hit, but I think I like the theme of friendship in this.
I thought that stuck the landing for me.
And yeah, just, yeah, I thought that was all good.
And again, these two are, I'm going to probably listen.
this has definitely inspired me to want to listen
to some Tenacious D songs for sure
because I like the tribute
Yeah I definitely like the creativity
in their songs just like
And also too how they're using off of
like just very
Like historical music
Whether it was the Beethoven stuff or whatever
And then they were like not making fun of it
But just using their own
lyrics with the like
Ancient stuff but I mean create I mean historical stuff
But also at the same time they had their own music
So I thought that was a fun
bits that they were doing that's great but now again i really want to hear uh more tenacious d
stuff after watching this so i think it's it's i'm sure it's fun for hardcore tenacious d fans but
it was also fun for someone like me who aside from just knowing like jack black the actor and
seeing kyle gas in a couple other movies like it was fun like oh and he was also in shallow how now
that i'm thinking about it too um but just like seeing them in in uh movies like it's fun like the
they're in their complete element and i haven't seen the show i know there was a tenacious d
show, I believe, that
at least from the outside you would imagine
as sort of like a differently flavored flight of the
Concordes maybe or something like that.
I don't know. But yeah,
like to see them in their own world, in their
own element that is also
lined with all this music that they made
for the movie. Like I get the sense in
hindsight that this probably didn't pan out
as the success and the
catapult to the next level that they hoped
it would. And I can see why,
but I feel like also
tenacious D music has this humorous
streak of
lore in that
you know it is about like you know
Jables and Cage are
you know the music seems to
chronicle aspects of them as these
characters of Tenacious D
and the legend and lore
surrounding Tenacious D
and as I again in my experience
of their music there is this quality where yeah there's
heavy homage to both
you know the classics
of metal and rock and also
just music in general
like with the Beethoven stuff
or yeah
I think they mix
that's the thing too about like you know
a lot of music and a lot of
this kind of rock and especially like acoustic
rock is there are these like harmonies and
things that are very classically influenced
and whatnot but yeah like their music
has this blend of
you know grit and vigor
certainly yes
mixed with the acoustics mixed with
this kind of yeah like
slubby guy
we're just kind of hanging out
and coming up with stuff
off the top of our heads humor
it's very much like epic
and righteous in one breath
while also being like hanging out
and like goofing around
and you know
again burrito supreme
and the the piece of destiny
and I love their energy too
especially Jack Black
like it's just fun to watch
I'm sure like that's that's also inspired
in real life too like I'm sure that's how he is
too in general I've seen him in interviews too
He's always got that energy.
I just think it's so much fun.
Also, too, I felt, I know it's just a movie,
but, like, in the context of the film and the story,
I felt so bad for Lee.
Oh, yeah, of course.
I'm sure, like, once they make it,
I'm sure in the storyline, though,
I'm going to look at it as they make it huge and big as the band.
And they buy him a hundred.
Cutless Supremes.
Yeah, they buy him a ton of student driver pizza delivery cars,
so, because he's their ultimate groupie.
But, yeah, I did feel bad for him that sucks.
yeah absolutely i love also too how like he's one of my favorite i know there's like very limited amount
of characters so it's like not saying much when i say he's one of my favorite characters of the film
but i just appreciated how kind and soft-hearted and naive he was he's like so i'm just checking in on you guys says he's watching them on the news
and he's hearing all this noise in the background like it's just so kind and oblivious and enthusiastic about them
yeah yeah it was very it has a very charming like that's the thing is like as much as yeah there is some stuff that is
crude that not every audience member will be into there is i think a sense of heart and and
uh charm i guess would be the word underneath like there is a lot of charm around the edges of
the movie and even the people who show up briefly bring some level of commitment and and yeah
there is that that kind of like you're just coming up with stuff coming up with stuff with your
buddy kind of charm that this has and and yeah like his energy is just so endearing that character
especially because you meet, you know, Cage through Jack's eyes and he's like in such admiration and then they start to have their, you know, artistic relationship and bunny heads. Whereas, yeah, Lee is just steadfast, you know, the golden retriever of the group, you know, just like always there, always supporting. And so, yeah, like naive and oblivious. Yeah, but even talking really quick and then we'll look up some stuff, but even talking about the theme of friendship, like I like that even though he was, Kyle was. Kyle was.
lying to him so much like and then the jig was up once the the voicemail came i like that
you know he spent the last of his money on that guitar from like that's where i think you're
talking about the heart too like i actually felt that was that was that was really sweet um and like
and heart felt like he really i think he also saw like that uh jb was like seeing something in him
that he didn't see in himself because i mean he's just a liar and a i wouldn't say a con man but
just a liar uh my trait you know what i mean so like seeing that this guy that really believes in him
it's like oh wow like you elevate me man and like hey we can do this together and like even
though i don't really have any money like i'm like literally this is the last of it i'm gonna spend
it on you i appreciate you man like oh that's so touching yeah and it's like little things like that
that do feel maybe potentially somehow inspired by some version of a reality right and yeah like
i appreciated the tempering of those like i feel like this is something that yeah like is very much
for people who are fans of the band.
And if you're not, your results may vary.
But, yeah, a little stuff like that.
Like, that moment in particular caught me.
And I was like, oh, this is, like, actually sweet
in a way that the movie doesn't have to be necessarily.
Yeah, that and when he showed up to the,
was it the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?
Is that where they were?
It's a Rock and Roll Museum.
Museum, sorry.
The Museum of Rock and Roll.
Museum of Rock and Roll.
I think is the other one?
Oh, yeah, when he shows up in the event.
Yeah, yeah, I like that.
There is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Is that in Cleveland, Ohio?
You might be right.
I can never keep track of where all these things are.
And then there's the Grammy Museum and there are other places.
John, you should know this all.
And I'm sure there are a million music museums in Nashville or whatever.
I think, yeah, just I guess in closing about the movie before we jump into some facts and stuff.
I think that is that is like the interesting thing about this is that I think it's like well attenuated to the band's fans, which I think is like the number one group you want to.
or two, obviously, with a movie like this,
you want to make something for the people
that's so well within your voice
that it's for the people who ride and die for you.
I feel like this could have maybe benefited
in the long term from, I don't know,
it doesn't really ever transcend
its sort of cult-like aim,
which I get the sense at the time they were hoping
that this could amount too much more
and bring more people into
just the world of Tenacious D.
and you know again catapult things to the next level which i don't get the sense that it did and so i feel
like it's a bummer because especially watching it with some time removed i'm like yeah as as sort of a
fun lark and you know yeah a comedic uh sequence of sketches and stuff like that like yeah there is a
lot of clearly a lot of fun being had and it is a bit of a madcap wild adventure um and so yeah
like i am bum that this didn't pan out into more that being said you know seeing it i'm like i get how
this pretty much would occupy the niche that the band already exists in. And as such, I can almost
see how the music would still be the bigger element, even though it is sort of prime you would
imagine for, you know, again, there was the series, there's this movie. You can imagine there
there being more tenacious D audio visual stuff simply because these two guys both are actors
and musicians. So it's interesting to note. But yeah, as a culmination of a lot of things, I thought
this was really fun. There were a lot of like really fun sound like the opening song,
Kickapoo, the Pick of Destiny song, you know, the fight with Satan, the metal, and even
some of the interstitial stuff. Like there are songs in between that definitely feel like
they mostly function at their best in context of watching the movie. I'm sure like, you know,
I'm sure you can get some fun and novelty out of listening to the laser grid song or like
the car chase song on your own. But those songs are so much like you're just kind of
singing along to what's happening in the movie in a cheeky way that I feel like those might
work best here because you know like sometimes comedy music I think comedy comedic skewing music
is fun because there's an element of removing yourself from the uh not prete not always pretense
but sometimes pretense having fun frees you up to try stuff and to I don't know just
operate in a way that you're not necessarily if you're really trying to be serious and so I think
there is something kind of lovely and there's a clear reason why the
tenacious d music is stuck around and why them as a band at least up until very recently has
endured uh and you know we'll probably return in some way shape or form and so yeah i do appreciate
that spirit of silliness and off-the-cuffness that comes along with this uh you know even even if
there are moments or things here or there that feel like they could have benefited from like a bit
more crafting uh yeah just their their musical flavor i think is well represented in here and that's a
fun thing. Well said, Jables. Thanks, age. Reject Nation, fun fact. Fantasy football is now a part of
my life. Why? Because my wife and her friends are obsessed with it. So I'm constantly hearing about
things I never heard about before. Like who's getting benched? Who's a sleeper pick? And why
someone's entire weekend was ruined over a bad play. And at this point, I figured might as well
support my wife the extra mile and getting in there myself. And that's why I want to think prize
picks. And my wife will tell you I'm not the sharpest tool in the show when it comes to stuff like
this but price fix is the easiest way to play daily fantasy sports no complicated drafts no long-term
commitments you just pick two to six players decide if they'll get more or less then their stat projections
like passing yards points or rebounds sports terms and if you get it right you win it's that easy
and it's quick you can make your picks in under a minute way less stressful than managing a full
fantasy team and you don't need to be a hardcore sports fan either believe me you don't
Whether you casually follow games or go full deep dive mode, it's fun either way.
And the flex play.
Flex play means you can still win even if you miss one pick, so it's not all or nothing.
And here's the best part.
Prize Picks is available in most states, including this lovely state, California, Texas, Georgia, so it's so it's so easy to jump in.
So it would be an amazing thing for yourself and to support the channel as well.
You could download the Price Picks app today.
Use code rejects and get $50 instantly when you play just $5.
You don't even have to win to get the bonus.
Prize picks, people.
Run your game.
You know what?
You know, I think it was the first person in line to see this in theaters.
Lee.
I mean, he had to walk to the theater probably, but still.
He did.
He rode his scooter.
He wrote a skateboard.
Yes.
Yes.
I was going to say, did we find out who played him?
I missed his name.
I will look that up in one sec.
What do you think the budget was on this film, first of all?
Budget.
Not box office.
Oh, God.
Budget.
Yes.
14 million dollars 20 million
okay you're close
yeah what do you think the box office
worldwide was for this film
world wide i don't know how to guess this one because i feel like it wasn't very
big if i'm remembering correctly it was a 20 million dollar movie
worldwide box office 15 million
13 million 924000 254
So about 14
I can see it
I can see it
Sadly yeah
Like I you know
It does appear like they got budget again
They had the Sasquatch stuff
They had the you know
Cooky mushroom trip stuff
And you know
That requires some set dressing
Critics rotten tomatoes
God I can either see
64 or 46
Which one do you see
I'm just gonna go 66
For Satan
For the critic
For the critics.
53.
What are you going to go for the audience?
You want to go 66 again for Satan?
Are you saying that that's the, yes, 66 is across the board.
Lock it in.
67.
Hey, I'll take it.
Yeah.
And they said, this is what the critics' consensus was.
Tenacious D fans will find this movie hilarious.
Everybody else will see only a lowbrow concept movie and a small assembly of jokes stretch past the 100-minute mark.
I mean, that is a very fairer.
assessment, I would say. Like, yeah, if you are into Tenacious D, then this will be for you, I would
imagine. I can imagine some film fans not loving it who are also into Tenacious D. J.R. Reed. I know
I've seen this dude. I know I've seen this man before, but I don't know. Oh, he's on. I think
you should leave. All right. I've never seen any of the project. I'll do another deep dive into his
filmog later on. But, all right. Well, but yeah. Let's do a couple of videos. Let's do it. Until this film,
Meatloaf had not sing in a movie
since the Rocky Horror Picture
Show in 1975 because he wanted
to be accepted in the industry
as a serious actor.
He even thought that his appearance
in the Pick of Destiny would ruin him
but he took the role of J.B.'s father anyway.
His name was Robert Paulson.
He was fun to have that. That song too
with you got him, Meatloaf,
or you got Jack Meatloaf
and Dio, like
which must have been a huge
deal for them to get Dio on the track
because it's like one of the greatest voices
in rock and roll history right there.
Jack Black said that he vowed never
to write a script again because the box
office failure of this film made him lose his
confidence. Oh, buddy.
That sucks. I mean... I don't know if he ever
didn't write. I mean, did he write another? Really
quick, I'll just check just to see. I do feel
for him. I feel like, you know,
I'm of two minds about this
in the scripting.
So he wrote Tenacious
D post-apocalyptic.
There was that show.
He wrote The Rodey
Tenacious D. Acceptable.
Yeah, I guess that's all he
wrote, really.
A little bit, but yeah.
Yeah, damn.
Interesting.
I mean, yeah, I can see how this would be a fun script
to get together and work on
and how much excitement you would have
originating a project like this.
I'm sad to discourage him from writing
because I feel like this has,
from a writing standpoint,
point like yeah again like i said there's stuff that feels like it could be more inspired or more
you know a little higher but i'm not against lowbrow humor there are times when i'm like temperate though
you know like temper it a little more but uh but yeah i feel like this was you know you could have
done a couple more drafts and had a real banger but as it stands it's pretty fun still well
writing wise i i feel for him but acting in career-wise i think he was he was still okay uh upon
entering the music store in search of the
Pick of Destiny, KG is
seen wearing a train wreck t-shirt.
Train wreck is a group in which gas is
a vocalist and guitarist under
the pseudonym Clip Calhoun.
He also produced
the group's 2004 live album.
That's fun. That's fun. One of
two films in which Troy Gentile
plays the childhood version of Jack
Black's character. The first came earlier
in 2006 when he portrayed
the young version of Nacho in the Paramount
Pictures family comedy, Nacho
I've never seen that film.
Yeah.
Oh, Nacho Libre's one.
Nacho!
The word, the F word,
and its derivatives are said
over, or 106 times
in this film.
Prepper, don't you know it?
Yes, Pepper's like, we know,
we know. Oh, yeah.
Don't remind us.
At the start of the movie
when J.B.'s dad, played by Meatloaf,
is tearing down posters.
He also tears down a figurine
from the bat out of hell cover.
Okay.
I was wondering about it.
that that's fun yeah let's go to a couple spoilers that's right do a couple spoilers
there Dave Grohl underwent seven hours of makeup to be turned into Satan
Dave that's fun he's the open mic guy or well Paul F. Tompkins is the open mic guy but
the actual Satan that's David Grohl right Dave girl yeah yeah fighters and Nirvana
gotcha okay uh so so he's the Satan version yeah yeah yeah he doesn't actually appear
right right right right right yeah yeah for sure for sure but
seven hours of makeup. Good God.
A, I'm surprised it was not
more, actually. Yeah, still.
That's a long time. The club where they play
their first gig and J.B. Dreams about singing
Master Exploder,
also at the end where
they meet Satan is Fangtasia from the series
True Blood. Really? That's fun.
Okay. Last one.
The film has multiple references
to Tenacious D's first album, Tenacious D, in
2001. Ronnie James Dio,
makes an appearance in the film
is possibly a reference to their song
Dio after they have defeated the devil
in a rock off they start trying to re-record the song
they performed in the rock off
by claiming it was the greatest song
ever made. Yet not being
able to remember it, this is obviously
a reference to their biggest hit tribute
during the final showdown they mentioned
that they will rock the devil's socks off
this is quite possibly a reference
to their song, Rock your
socks off.
Cool. That's all the
Yeah, we have.
Is that the actual name or did you censor that creative?
No, no, that was the actual name.
Yeah, yeah.
That's what it said.
Just, I feel like with this band, you got to make sure.
Yeah, no, no, that's what it said.
I would have told you.
You're good.
Yeah.
I don't doubt you.
Yes.
Anyways, guys, what did you think of tenacious D and the pick of destiny?
The Squatch.
That's the only remaining fact.
Oh, yes.
Who's our squatch, man?
My bad.
My bad.
Tim Robbins in the big Rasputin guy.
We will get the sassie.
Sasquatch right now, John.
I'm so sorry.
I had one job.
I failed.
Sasquatch.
Where are you?
Sasquatch.
Sasquatch.
Saskwitch.
Shing in the dead of night.
Why is it taking so long to find the Sasquatch?
Sasquatch searching on the IMDB.
Good God.
Where are you?
Uncredited, maybe?
Maybe he is really down below.
Jesus.
Good Lord.
David Crumholtz.
What?
Frat boy number two.
I didn't even see him in there.
Wow.
We got to go back and look at.
John C. Riley?
Hey.
No.
No.
Oh, Jason Segal was also a frat boy.
What?
Dang.
You got to have to really, yeah, look back on some of those shots.
I am watching on YouTube later.
I'm just going back to the frat boy scene.
It's funny.
I can totally, thinking back and with the voice of the Sasquatch, I was like, I know he's, you know, that.
You know, that thing that, but I didn't catch it right at the moment.
I did say it sounds familiar.
perfect sense now and oh my god that's awesome god i love johnsy rightly so much anyways guys what did
