Episode Date: June 26, 2024SITH REVEALED W/ Many Lightsaber Fight Scenes!! The Acolyte Episode 1x5 Full Reaction Watch Along: https://www.patreon.com/thereelrejects The Acolyte Reaction, Recap, Commentary, Analysis, Spoiler Rev...iew, & Theories! In Episode 5 of The Acolyte, the mysterious Sith Lord, revealed to be Qimir, engages in a fierce battle against the Jedi, resulting in the deaths of several Jedi members including Jecki & Yord. The episode is filled with intense lightsaber duels and high-octane action. The episode starts with Osha waking up to Qimir attacking her, and she witnesses him killing multiple Jedi. Master Sol directs Yord to take Osha back to the ship while Osha senses they need to return to help. They lure umbramoths to try and use them against Qimir. During the fight, Jecki manages to knock off Qimir's helmet before succumbing to her wounds. Qimir, now unmasked, engages in a battle with Master Sol, claiming Sol has lied to Osha and Mae and that the Jedi make the rules. Osha tries to sway Qimir but fails, leading Mae to swap clothes with Osha and cut her hair to match Osha's. Qimir, not noticing the switch, returns to "Mae" (Osha in Mae's clothes) and takes care of her. The episode ends with the twins swapping roles and the Jedi order facing a devastating loss. The cast features Amandla Stenberg as Mae, Lee Jung-jae as Master Sol, Carrie-Anne Moss (Trinity from The Matrix) as Indara, Manny Jacinto as Qimir, Dafne Keen (X23 from Logan) as Jecki Lon, Charlie Barnett as Yord Fandar, Jodie Turner-Smith as Mother Aniseya, Rebecca Henderson as Vernestra Rwoh, Joonas Suotamo as Kelnacca, a Wookiee Jedi. We just had the end of The Bad Batch Season 3, Tales Of The Empire, and now we await Star Wars: Dawn Of The Jedi, The Mandalorian & Grogu movie, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, Star Wars: Lando, & perhaps more! Let's do it, guys.
Very soapy.
Yeah, it's very soap opera.
So the entire show's felt like a soap opera.
I just find it funny.
That was my favorite episode so far,
but I think if I had enjoyed the earlier ones,
I would have loved it more.
Corey, you're going to say that for every episode moving forward.
I hope you know that.
I don't think every episode is going to be my new favorite.
Because, man, four did not.
Was that better the three?
Disney has a habit of that.
Yeah.
All righty.
Well, let us discuss.
All right.
All right, ladies and gentlemen, well, we just watched Acolyte episode five.
And, I mean, Coy, you said this is the best one you've seen so far.
Favorite episode yet.
Oh, I brought you on at the right time.
Disney Plus episode five's.
Looks like Michael, you don't need a return anymore.
that's it everyone in the comments let them know new disney shill over here i got six days to learn everything
michael knows star wars i'm gonna get on it get on it but books do i read yeah that was a
i would say it's probably the the best one i mean i noticed with disney plus those episode fives
are usually the ones where they throw down but it's usually for an episode that's a six episode
series this is an eight so i i always thought they were big for the penultimate episode and then
the denouement is the final like the final episode like the six but in this case there's
eight so it's surprising how big this five
was because they're only at their halfway point kind of
I remember with Star Wars as like Asoka
they made their five really big I feel like it usually
a Mandalorian as well
because Gambit was five yeah five
but traditionally
they're a six episode series so I always assumed five
was important because of penultimate versus
like they just like the number five true
true all right well there's a lot of pros
to this one and there's some
cons that I personally feel
I'm going to wager a guess
that you feel the same as I in these
I'm the big old asterix to why this is my favorite, and I want to get into that after.
Okay, okay.
Yeah, because I mean, I think for starters, like, I think something you have to give this show credit for is the martial arts choreography.
Like, I think the Jedi fighting is really good, and it still doesn't feel, it doesn't feel like the Disney sequel fighting, and it doesn't feel 100% like prequels.
It feels like somewhere in the middle in between.
Like, it actually feels like a martial arts show to me, whenever they do have fight scenes that go down.
And I like that we've, even from episode one, two, and then this one, I think there's been a variety of martial arts infusion and to finally get some real lightsaber fights where you do get some really cool dual wielding choreography.
I thought was rewarding, you know, like it was actually cool to look at and behold.
That's an obvious pro, right?
I'm going to say my big asterisk.
Just say, whatever is just say. I think the reason I loved this episode was,
because it was the most Star Warsy,
but not because of anything
the actual episode was doing.
What does that mean?
I love to see lightsaber fights
because of my association with lightsabers.
Yeah, it's cool to look at it's fun.
Yeah, I love to hear the word Sith,
but because I care about the Sith,
like, I feel like all the emotional weight
is weighted on Star Wars,
not on the first four episodes getting here.
Oh, yeah.
I don't have an investment in these characters enough
that I care about them.
I care about Zoom, Zoom.
Like, that's concerning.
I love this episode because I love Star Wars,
but the acolyte asterix is the problem I've had for each episode.
I'm not invested in anyone but soul, really, and the twist wasn't impact.
It was kind of the opposite of Luke I am your father.
It was like, of course you're the bad guy.
Yeah, it's so obvious.
So, like, I don't know if it's episode five that's good or that Star Wars is great.
Or is it just better than the prior ones?
I think that with a side of like, man, it's cool to see lightsabbers.
Yeah, you know, like, I don't know.
I haven't really
My
What's the damn word you're looking for?
The star that you're setting for it,
the expectation.
With what Star Wars has sort of devolved into
under the Disney umbrella,
like it feels like a rarity
to get great Star Wars now.
It feels like the norm
is things that you've seen devolve
such as like Rise of Skywalker,
Book of Boba Fett,
Mandalorian season three was like,
oh man, that's not as great
as like the first two seasons.
Obi-1
and I watch this show
and I'm like
it's about a bar
with what I'm expecting
for Starboard
so I feel like
there's been this weight
placed with acolyte
to be
I don't know
the way how like
the negative reception
has gone down
is so extreme
with this show
and to me
I guess the bar
that I had
for it to clear
was like
I just want
something reasonably amusing
like if this
was coming out
right after Force Awak
or something, or right after Mandalorian season one,
then I would be like, come on.
But now you're like,
judging it off of a completely different thing here.
Like, to me, it's about on par with what is now beloved,
the prequels.
Like, the prequels to me, I don't feel like are great.
But I find them, I find two and three fine and fun.
I like three a lot.
What am I talking about?
I love Revenge of this.
I love that one.
But like, two, I'm like, yeah, it's fun.
It's fine.
And I think this is about a bar with it in the acting and stuff.
And so, yeah, like, my bar is not high to clear.
Like, I don't think this is a great show.
I don't.
And I agree with you on the, because I think we were getting out with the fight scenes is, like, we would give a shit more.
If we cared about anyone fighting?
If the fights had an emotional impact.
Also, they killed all the Jedi.
I thought this show was like, remember the age of the Jedi.
And they're like, you're going to meet these eight Jedi.
They're going to die right away.
And then you're going to care about her feeling for the.
those Jedi that we just met and she didn't seem to care about them before she and then there's
that whole speech about family I'm like who was her family yeah yeah it's the biggest we didn't see
them talking at all it's the biggest flaw with it is uh I don't really it's like I would I notice with
me I'm latching on to characters again it's a comparison game like I never really cared for yord um the
last got to get his neck snapped I've the one that I do like someone I like them significantly more than
I would because I don't really care
about the other people.
So all your attention is focused.
So it's like, I'm going to just
I'm going to really water the plant
here, you know?
Like I, like, that's why I would soul.
I get really like, I think soul's actually
really good, but like Jackie, Daphne Keene,
I really like her performance. So when she got
killed, I was bummed because I'm like,
you're like one of two people I
really like on this show.
And what happens when I lose
you guys? Because I think
May and OSHA, I've seen a man, LaStenberg and other things, one other thing, bodies, bodies, bodies.
And so I think she's a great- And Hunger Games. She's a great actress. And when it comes to this show, I think the writing, and I've said this from day one, even as someone who liked episode three, I've said this from day one, the writing when it comes to the dialogue is just not good in this show. And I don't feel like this episode does anything to alleviate that.
specifically May and OSHA.
It's so interesting how it's like it's two actresses
that is one actress acting in a way
that is the lead of the show but given all the most trite
dialogue. Yeah. It's like she's written separately by a writer that is going
like feel, not making you feel, it's like telling you to feel
and I want to feel. I like Amanda Sternberg, but I'm being told to feel
not shown to feel. Well, the big problem too is
the writing her dialogue in a way, for both,
Both of them, like, there's, it's repetitive, and they try to treat it like it's mysterious.
When I'm like, just give me, A, there's something to enhance your character more or be something to enhance the plot more.
Like, do one of those two.
And the choice is, they don't do any of that.
And so the fact that we're just left with them is like, oh, no, I mean, like, we have soul, which I'm happy about.
Because I feel like it's a saving grace.
I feel like they cut to her and I'm like, oh, no, she's the A plot.
I get worried that, like, we're at the last.
lead, but I shouldn't feel like, oh, no, we're on the A plot.
Like, you know what I mean?
Like, especially the scene where they built up the meeting for four episodes leading
to this fifth episode, and they have this tension, and they cut the tension by cutting
to an exposition shot, they cut away to, like, establishing shot, this cool, pretty
land, and then cut back to them walking at the same pace, but in somewhere prettier,
why would you cut the tension with an establishing cloud shot?
I don't know.
I mean, they're doing or dirty.
I think they were trying to, like, change the mood or the tone.
like this this has felt like a detective soap opera show in so many ways like it seems like it
kind of switches the genres up a lot and to me I was I was definitely amused throughout this
entire episode like I was actually even when I was like that's cheesy or that's not good
or that's bad writing I still found myself passably entertained the whole time I was entertained
and I like Camere and I like that Mani Jacento's performance was a different
different performance when he was trying to be sneaky that we all knew and then the reveal like
he stayed in that Sith voice. I like his cadence and the staccato behind the mask. And then
once he was revealed who he was, that's who he is. I really, like him embracing the Sith
elements was awesome. But I really wished it felt more surprising. Well, it's an interesting
thing with him as Kimmer because I really believed him as like the Kamira guy. I really believed
him as that. And he was so committed to that act that I thought it was.
would feel stupider.
That was the only thing
that made me doubt
that he was the Sith.
Because I'm like, it just feels like
this guy is just way too committed
to this act to be like this
goofy. And like when he's like caught up
and strung up an episode. Yeah, that's fair.
Like this is so cheesy. Like it would be so goofy
if he is. But then he grounded it.
Yeah. The Sith in a really cool way.
I thought he did it. But then the fault
comes in again for the dialogue writing for me.
It's like, okay, they just give him the most like cliche
bad guy. But his delts
look great. But he looks great. And great arms.
And he's surprisingly, I wasn't laughing at him in the performance.
And I was worried that might be the case that the reveal would be that obvious.
But I wasn't laughing at him.
So I give the show credit for that.
And like most of this episode is just like action scenes.
So to say like that that's really good.
It's like, well, yeah, that's most of the episode is action.
Twice the best episode.
I just don't care.
Because it's barely scared.
Because they don't need that.
And the development that is there doesn't really work.
So we're just talking about the other stuff.
It was weird how they were just killing off all these characters, though, because I'm like,
I haven't had enough time to get invested in any of them.
To freaking, Oshah doesn't even seem that bothered by it.
No, and she's like, I really care about my Jedi family, do you?
Like, they're more of a family.
I'm like, it doesn't look like you, yeah, they're taking a second to group.
The whole thing with the hair.
They're like foot soldiers.
Like, the Jedi are basically like the foot clan and turtles.
Like, I want to care about the Jedi.
But the hair.
Oh, when she had a perfect haircut.
When she was like,
That was great.
That was fantastic.
And then it was perfect.
I love it.
I love it, Corey.
I want to, I want to care about anyone but soul enough that I can go, okay, A plot, B plot.
And now that the A plot is bringing Soul into it, maybe I'll care.
Sure.
Because I do want to love May and OSHA, and I do love Master Soul.
I do like the Sith.
So that's three characters now.
But I don't know if it's too little too late, because you're going on episode six.
Yeah.
Yeah.
that's a concern.
If this wasn't a Star Wars show,
I would not have made a pass two.
And that's not fun.
Like,
I don't want my on par
to be the bar is in hell.
Like,
I don't want to go in like,
man,
do I want this adequacy?
Like,
I don't want everything to be,
like mediocrity is celebrated.
And I feel like the way I feel about Star Wars
is the way a lot of people feel about Marvel externally.
The way I hear Marvel regarded,
I can't feel because I've been so in love with the comics
that my whole life,
I'm just like,
oh my God,
we have Thor?
Like to this day,
I'm still like, that's crazy.
And I'm hoping that people that love Star Wars get that out of this.
I'm hoping there's an element of, even if it feels mediocre as a show, I'm not as attached to the Jedi.
But I'm hoping there's people that are out there like,
like I was at a four, that live at like an 11, like I am whenever I see an obscure frame referenced.
Well, I guess.
I mean, when he says you sit, you're like, well, yeah, we know that.
You got a red lights every, bro.
He's been previously.
Like, we know that.
Yeah.
It's the first time it's been said, I think, right?
In the show, yeah.
Is that the first time, is like this, the Sith birth?
Like, is this, like...
I'm not Michael.
Okay, Michael, is that the first time there's been a Sith set aloud?
No, the controversy is that, like, one of the characters who appeared, I forget the name,
appeared in episode four, I want to say, and he's...
Oh, his birthday or something.
He's an episode, he's in one of the prequels.
And in the prequels, he says that, like, there hasn't been Sith in this many years or hasn't been seen.
So it's like, it feels like it's going against...
canon because it's the same
guy. Yeah.
And so when his character
might know about, clearly knows
about the Sith right now. Because he's in the show
with the first Sith.
Exactly. Maybe he's a Sith.
So maybe he's a liar.
Maybe he's the master.
And we're going to find out. But
I mean, we'll see where this like
I don't know. I guess I just don't find it.
This is something that I've gotten a lot
of shit for not hating.
this show particularly, Michael
and myself. And I haven't been bothered
by it. I think I'd
enjoy hating it if I hated it. I wish I
wasn't apathetic towards it. I'm very
I want to feel. I'm apathetic towards the hate.
Oh, that I'm definitely. I'm
apathetic towards the hate because
I'm like, I'm not like in love with this show
and you guys are like really
trying to climb down my throat here. I'm like
well, I mean, go ahead. Hey, it helps
the engagement out on this video. Yeah. That's
also like I don't care enough
about the people that are mad for no reason
to feel. But if you've got
stuff that, like, bothers you narratively, like, that's
an interesting conversation. But so much of
what I've heard people don't like about the show is, like,
on them, like, on the, on the
person screaming at the keyboard. Like, I don't
feel any connection to those people.
I feel like, you mean, with
any fandom, right,
and particularly, like, let's just focus on
Star Wars for a second.
There's obviously people out there
who will like
Star Wars content because it's Star Wars.
They'll blindly like it.
just because it's Star Wars.
I'm not saying everyone who likes it is that person.
I'm saying there are people like that.
And there's also people out there who don't like this show
because they don't like the writing and the acting.
Not everyone who doesn't like it is a sexist, bigot, racist guy.
You know, that's not true.
Do those people exist?
We know they exist.
We see them.
We see them and hear them, and they are not shot.
Like, we know they exist.
but that's not everyone.
And for me, I'm not, I wouldn't even say I'm in the middle of that.
I'm just like, it's a, I find this not offensive.
I don't feel like it's going to affect any of the future really important canon
that is to come for Star Wars in the future.
I don't really feel like this is going to have that much of an effect.
It's, to me, it's just another TV show in the Star Wars universe.
And that's why I don't hold it to this highest regard or,
I am concerned about the weight of placement that it holds in Star Wars.
You know, I don't.
I think it's, it's very safe to say that not everyone that doesn't like this show is a misogynist,
but every misogynist hates this show.
So I think it's really important when you look at the reason behind your rage, like, why people are connecting or not.
And I'm hoping more people are connecting quietly.
Like I, because, yeah, there's a big group out there who's trying to, who's fighting to let themselves be.
I think it's important that you have an audience that doesn't feel like rage-baiting those people.
I hope there's a contingency of people that are celebrating getting these stories told.
But I just haven't connected enough that I want more.
And that feels unfortunate because I don't want Star Wars to feel like it's just on.
But here we are, episode five.
Like, that's the reality.
Those lightsabers made sounds and I was happy.
I so agree with that sentiment.
and I guess I've just become so jaded
by the way I was with like Marvel for a while
like hey it's this Marvel now man
and then Loki were like wait a second
yeah it's what happens man is it's Marvel
and then now I'm back with Star Wars
I'm like I'm overfit man and Lauren season 3
fucking Obi-1 like it's Star Wars but like Marvel
it could swing back and we could be I'm hoping
the movies bring us back to the full passion
like there was a phase where there was a couple
Marvel falls in a row and then all of a sudden
Loki and X-Men and Deadpool coming up
I think that fervor
is going to be exciting, but I really hope the Star Wars fans, for their sake, get that feeling again.
Yeah, yeah, I think there's a lot who are getting that feeling, because, like, to my understanding, there's a lot that it's pulling from, from, like, not just a high republic books and stories, it's also pulling from, like, comics.
I was talking about how a lot of this is playing from, like, Darth Vader comics as well.
There's a lot of things that they're pulling from and taking inspiration from, in a lot of ways, this show reminds me the most of the prequels, despite whatever story can't.
and stuff that it might be interfering with.
And like the reality is too
is that whenever you're going to tell a Star Wars story
or any story, you're going to mess with
Canon because you want to create something new.
You know, and then whenever you create something new,
that'll add to Canon. So you're
automatically messing with Canon in some way.
Yeah. And the
other reality too is that
George Lucas had a very bad
relationship with the fans during the
prequel era. And with Canon.
Like the way how people... Yeah, canon and the way people
hated him for it. It was a big part
would perturbed him from continuing Star Wars, you know?
And I'm not saying this is going to have the same reverency because it's just a Disney Plus show.
I've just watched this and I go, it's about on par for the, like, a fan of medicine attack of the clones to me.
This is about on par with that for me.
Well, when that dude comes back and he's the master Sith lord and the canon is accurate because he was tricking people in episode one or whatever, I'll be stoked that the big reveal wasn't Khmer.
It was that guy being a sin.
The big Darth Vader moment is like, no, I am the first sit.
And he's been lying the whole time.
Yeah.
I'd like that.
Well, this was fun, man.
I had fun with this one.
This was a fun one.
I'm glad I was here for this one.
I hope that I didn't do Michael's seat a disservice.
You're fortunate that there's no plot in this one.
It helped a lot.
I didn't have to reference anything.
I didn't have to know.
Guys, I knew those lightsamers were colors.
I'm sure there's something we missed.
There's always something we missed.
Definitely.
I'll be back to tell me why I was wrong.
Yeah.
is something obvious.
But out of all the episodes, I'm like, this is the least information heavy one.
Perfect filler.
So there you go.
I'm the substitute teacher with the VCR.
I dragged it in.
You guys watched a movie.
I'm going to leave.
You brought value to this video.
I totally believe that, Corey.
Thanks.
Well, guys, what did you think?
Was this the best one?
I thought it was the best one.
I give it a solid seven out of ten.
Seven out of ten for me, too.
Best one with a seven.
My controversial opinion, I still like episode three a lot.
Oh, three is my second favorite.
Yeah, I don't like it a lot.
Yeah, five, three.
It's the one the world is like.
Jody Turner Smith is the best actress or actor period on the show.
Like, I think she crushed.
I like that episode a lot.
You guys cannot change my opinion.
If the last three episodes are just her talking whatever, I'm there.
I'm in and excited.
Yeah.
All righty guys.
Well, thank you so much for being here.
We'll see you soon.
