THAT ENDING SCENE…The Acolyte Episode 1x6 Full Reaction Watch Along: https://www.patreon.com/thereelrejects After the Sith Revealed in Acolyte Episode 5 with the Jedi Lightsaber fight scenes, we now... hop into The Acolyte Reaction, Recap, Commentary, Analysis, Spoiler Review, & Theories! In Episode 6 of "The Acolyte," titled "Teach/Corrupt," the story continues to unfold with Osha waking up in an unfamiliar cave on an "Unknown Planet," resembling the planet where Rey trained with Luke Skywalker. The episode reveals that Osha has been abducted by Qimir, who was once a Jedi "a long time ago.” The episode focuses on the interactions between Osha and Qimir as he attempts to persuade her to question the teachings of the Jedi Order. Qimir challenges Osha's beliefs about the Force and her role as a Jedi, suggesting that the Jedi abandoned her because of her unresolved emotions and the power she possesses. He offers her a choice to leave or stay with him, hinting at a deeper connection to her potential. Meanwhile, Sol is dealing with the aftermath of the previous episode's events, struggling to communicate with the Jedi Council and facing the consequences of his past actions. He also starts to suspect that Mae, who is pretending to be Osha, is not who she claims to be. The episode ends with a cliffhanger, as Osha puts on Qimir's helmet, which is said to provide sensory deprivation and a connection to the Force. This act symbolizes her potential turn to the dark side and the growing influence of Qimir on her. The cast features Amandla Stenberg as Mae, Lee Jung-jae as Master Sol, Carrie-Anne Moss (Trinity from The Matrix) as Indara, Manny Jacinto as Qimir, Dafne Keen (X23 from Logan) as Jecki Lon,  Charlie Barnett as Yord Fandar, Jodie Turner-Smith as Mother Aniseya,  Rebecca Henderson as Vernestra Rwoh, Joonas Suotamo as Kelnacca, a Wookiee Jedi. We just had the end of The Bad Batch Season 3, Tales Of The Empire, and now we await Star Wars: Dawn Of The Jedi, The Mandalorian & Grogu movie, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, Star Wars: Lando, & perhaps more! Starting point is 00:01:09 The new Volvo XC90 designed for life. Visit volvocars.com slash us to learn more. Mike, we're ready to do it? Let's go. Let's do it. Cool. Really? okay okay that was an episode that was an episode that was an episode that was an episode of television
Starting point is 00:01:38 people that is what television is today michael you can go first buddy what you think you know it's um uh uh uh uh gorse um you know it's tough because there are like uh uh they're are pieces of this show that I genuinely enjoy. And then there's the rest of it. And like this episode, there was like some like promising pieces that I was like, oh, okay, I'm like like really interested to see what's going to happen with, uh, with OSHA and, uh, you know, our, our Sith thirst trap. But also, um, like, the,
Starting point is 00:02:30 way it played out and the way it like reads like script wise um i mean it literally feels like a tumbler thirst trap like star wars edition like fanfic sort of like it's it's like literally a page out of that you know which to like to each their own i suppose um but also like what you know yeah um and we didn't even get any but you know which no ass you know frankly that was that could have been a critical moment in star wars yeah we have yet to have confirmation that there are actually butts in space um we don't know and or didn't have a butt did it there was like not that i can remember um we'd remember a butt i'd remember a butt i never forget one um so you know Meanwhile, May is genuinely, like, the most uninteresting character to me.
Starting point is 00:03:35 I just, I derive zero anything from it. I keep trying. Soul, I love him. He's like holding so much of the show together for me. But it's tough because you can only have him be like so like, I have to tell the counsel and confess my sins and not actually do it or, you know, you know, and also the fact that like this like Jedi expert master like made it as long as, and like I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt. Like he just watched a bunch of like his friends get massacred and he's
Starting point is 00:04:13 out of his element and he's not really thinking straight. But like your Padawan who you've spent years with just got replaced by her actual evil twin and you didn't pick up on it even though she has like burnt marks on her bad haircut yeah i don't know i just i don't buy it um and it just i don't know i'm i've really you know i've i've done my best to give this particular series the benefit of the doubt um and i just i'm waiting it it just doesn't feel cohesive it just doesn't feel the connective threads aren't there. And I think the reason that it sucks the most is because they're playing around with some really cool concepts. Like, I genuinely enjoy the time period of the High Republic. Like, I've enjoyed that part more than I expected than I, I've enjoyed
Starting point is 00:05:07 that part more than I thought I would genuinely. I feel like there's some really interesting concepts to play with. And yet every time that we start to go down something that I'm like, oh, this is interesting. They're like, yeah, we're just going to completely get sidetracked to do something else. And, you know, the, you know, the quality control on the series is just, it's, it feels a little lackluster and feels a little might be an understatement, you know. I mean, even you and I both at the same time as she's walking out being like, is she wearing jeans? you know like um and sure maybe that was a deliberate choice um but it feels like a weird deliberate choice if it is um and it's it's a a challenging thing for me when you know at a critical time
Starting point is 00:06:02 in our respective industry you know when you have you know these these major shows that are trying to you know get the most bang for their buck where they're they're not really getting the most bang for their buck in terms of how they're stretching their dollars and we're seeing other you know i look at like like godzilla minus zero i know it's been like the big comparison that everybody online has been minus one wow sorry i'm tired dude i apologize minus one minus zero that's godzilla it's just math michael come on um but like the the the contrast the comparison there of like you know i think those are very very valid concerns and valid points that people keep breaking up.
Starting point is 00:06:48 I'm walking away from you, Michael. I'm walking away just to upload this one thing. Walking away from Star Wars, Greg, I'm walking away from Star Wars now. I think for me, the greatest frustration that I have right now is that there is a lack of quality control in the writing. The pacing of this series is all over the place. was pitched as a as a thriller mystery there hasn't been much thriller or mystery um the characters that are the strongest have been given the least um and the characters that are the weakest have been given the most um and uh ultimately there's a lot of fun stuff to explore um but it seems
Starting point is 00:07:35 like there's been active choices to not explore it um you know and and ultimately uh it's unfortunate because I think this was a really kind of pivotal moment for Star Wars to do a reset and to explore, you know, outside of the, you know, the heavy weight that is, you know, somehow Palpatine returned. And instead, we've gotten, you know, I think a really rough point of entry to what could have been a really exciting moment for this franchise. You know, that being said, I think there are some phenomenal actors and there are some really high highs, you know, like last week's episode, you know, some of the choreography really was genuinely like, like fun and like really got me like, oh, okay, this is this is what
Starting point is 00:08:33 I'm talking about. And, you know, there are moments when like I forget. And I like, I'm like, oh, I'm like really in the High Republic era. And like I'm really feeling the Star Wars magic. I just hate that those moments are few and far between. You know, and that's not to say that they can't turn it around. But like, you know, I think we're more than halfway in. And it's becoming increasingly difficult for me to see how they could do that.
Starting point is 00:09:02 You know, I think it kind of underscores. And I know it's tough because. I'm like Mr. positivity, which I take a lot of pride in. Like, I like, I like being happy all the time.
Starting point is 00:09:13 I love consuming Star Wars, and I am. I'm grateful for every bit of Star Wars because when I left to theaters, you know, in 2005 at Revenge of the Siff, I thought that was it. And so I've,
Starting point is 00:09:23 I've literally always, even if I don't love it, I'm always still grateful for anything that we get because, you know, little baby Michael really thought that was the end of the road. You know,
Starting point is 00:09:33 I think they need to take a hard look here and really consider the overarching creative direction of this franchise. And, you know, I think among the hobbablew of the fans, there are some really valid criticisms. And, you know, you can actively ignore those and you can call it whatever you want to call it. Or you can, like, take a step back and say, like, okay, no, there was some missteps with this. And it's okay to make missteps, but we need to do some creative realignment.
Starting point is 00:10:04 And I think, you know, I think it goes across the board. You know, I think the last season of the Mandalorian had a really rough go of it. I think decisions were made from a business standpoint, not a creative standpoint. You know, I think Asoka had some similar struggles. The book of Boba Fett was like all over the place. Obi-Wan did not deliver on all cylinders. And I think was a, you know, if it didn't have Ewan McGregor, you know, like it's hard to imagine that being a commercial success. And it's tough because we're all still grateful for it, right? Because it's Star Wars
Starting point is 00:10:41 and because there are still great moments and you still have these incredible talented actors and there are still, you know, these one-off episodes that keep you going and that keep you excited and inspired. But ultimately, what the franchise is lacking right now is an overarching cohesive creative vision. And I don't know who it is. You know, I'm not sure. I'm not if it's Dave Filoni or John Favreau or somebody that we don't even know yet, but it's clear to me that this like disparate type storytelling is not working for the franchise. And it has never been more abundant to me than in how this series has been rolled out. And it's a shame because I think that they lost what could have been a cash cow and a great entry point for so many New Star Wars
Starting point is 00:11:29 fans and a really great way to excite, you know, longtime fans. And that's to say, like, I think it's a disservice to, you know, all of the amazing writers that they brought on for the High Republic. And I think it's a disservice to, you know, a lot of the extraordinary directors and talent that they have access to. But yeah, anyway, I know I just rambled on for way longer than I planned. But I've been holding in a lot of feelings, Greg. And that's all I have to say about that. That was a solid 10. minutes of talking, Michael.
Starting point is 00:12:07 Congratulations. You did it. What did you think, Greg? I don't know. I started thinking about what I'm going to eat tonight. You know, like, is my listening face looking like I'm listening? I thought you were agreeing with me. Oh, so it worked.
Starting point is 00:12:27 Okay. Uh, I, I agree. I think, I think what, and segment is, I mean, this journey has been like, I think from day one, I've said, like, I'm not a fan of the way the dialogue is done. I've said that like from day one, the dialogue has been like a major issue for me, even for episodes that I enjoy more than others. Um, and I still stand by, like thinking up, I didn't know we got a lot of flack for it. I still stand by it. I still stand by it. I still think episodes. three is one of the better ones of them all hate all you want. I still do think that. And it is at a point where it's like, all right, more of the, it was always like, give
Starting point is 00:13:20 it the benefit of the doubt, you know, just wait it out, wait till the longer and you're right. We are in the home stretch now where we only got two more episodes left. And in this episode itself, it was like, okay, it's a real problem when the setup in the last few, like, minute of this show, the episode is way more interesting than everything else we just watched. This whole thing with, like, OSHA, with May and Seoul on the ship, like, nothing really became, like, there's nothing, this all day I cut my hair, I'm going to infiltrate. I'm like, nothing really became of her disguising herself to be OSHA. And it, it also
Starting point is 00:14:02 felt like it was a little undercut as I think that Basel character is. I feel like tonally kind of undercuts it. It keeps wanting to have tension and I've said it like in episodes that I've even enjoyed out of just laughing with, laughing at the show I've enjoyed. It's like, it's so
Starting point is 00:14:18 soap opery that I find it funny. And this was the one where I'm like, okay, I'm starting to get bored now. Um, where the soap opery stuff is like funny to me still, but it's also kind of boring at times. And and um it's just like the dialogue interaction especially between sith guy and and osha it's just
Starting point is 00:14:42 about as generic as it gets and the show hasn't really built to the show the show hasn't really built to this idea of like the darkness and osha and stuff like there's been no it just doesn't feel earned no at all and so it's been so getting to this point in the show where some Suddenly in the last minute, it goes like horror movie on you. Souls got her captive. And it's like, you're going to listen to me, bitch. You know, like he's just got this whole attitude. It's like dark blue saw lighting.
Starting point is 00:15:15 And then freaking OSHA with like, I'll put on the dark mask. I don't know what the fuck is happening with the show. And it's like, talking about it contextually just sounds so funny to me when you like to go reiterate yourself over it. So, I don't know, I feel like we've been some of the most fair when it comes to this series and have let our criticisms lay out. And I feel like the gears have been shifting a little bit more where some of these criticisms now are for dominating over the things that are pros, especially after, like, the thing is like the last episode is like really fun. As a lot of, it's actually like really good choreography and a lot of fun lightsaber battles, but you did kill off like most of your cast. and yeah which is unfortunate too because there was a lot more to do there like like there there were fascinating dynamics that never had the chance to like be fleshed out in any really
Starting point is 00:16:09 meaningful way like and but that's my point like the the pacing of the show and the earned x y and z of all of it yeah like it just it never all of this stuff just doesn't seem to come to fruition across the board and and i don't know if that like is that indicative of of a disjointed writer's room? Is that indicative of, of, like, an uncertain showrunner, you know, or is that, like, just disjointed notes from the studio? You know, I mean, there's a variety of reasons, but, but ultimately it comes down to, like, whatever it is,
Starting point is 00:16:45 it's not working. And, you know, it's, it's honestly, it's really tough because I feel like, you know, they've got the disadvantage of at the same time, like, you know, House of the Dragon, the boys, you know, a lot of other, like, large, you know, high production, you know, high value, you know, well-written series are all kind of out at the same time. And it's hard because, like, yeah, there's like great criticisms of House to the Dragon and, you know, this season.
Starting point is 00:17:14 It's like, you know, I'm not going to get into it. But like, but I look at that and I'm like, wow, even on the show's like worst moment, it is still like so much more cohesive and there's still so many more plot lines and elements and relationships and dynamics that are being considered. And it just makes me wonder, like, why, why have we allowed the bar to be set so exponentially low for Star Wars? And I think the heart of it, like, to answer my own question is, like, we just need to figure out what it is, right? Like, like, you said it best. Like, is it a soap opera? Like, and listen, if they wanted to be a soap opera, that's fine. But can we just, like, figure out what it is?
Starting point is 00:17:57 Because at this point, I'm just kind of flustered because every single Star Wars show that has come out has yet to kind of define, like, what genre it is. And as a result, it always feels so disjointed and uncomfortable, and you lose so much. And, you know, and it's tough because you watch the original trilogy and, like, yeah, it was. a little campy, but it committed, you know, and like it owned it, you know, whereas this, it just can't commit to any of it. And because of that, it is, it is none of it. And, you know, I think that's where, where my issue lies. And, you know, um, uh, yeah. So I'm, I'm, I'm completely there with you. And, and listen, at the end of the day, it's Star Wars. And I'm still grateful. And there's a lot of amazing people that have put the series together. And there are great
Starting point is 00:18:51 redeeming parts, and I don't want to disparage any of them in the process, but also, like, I think the frustrating part is that we know that it can be better. Like, we all know what the potential can be, and I think that that's where the real frustration is. Especially this plot. Like, they have Green Girl show up at the whole thing with her investigating and going to the planet. I was like, this is just a waste of screen time. Like, there's a more efficient way you could have got into the final point of this.
Starting point is 00:19:21 whole scene than just we know all this like we know all this and they walk so freaking slow and it's like this is not like tension or atmospheric this is just like it's slow you know and so yeah it was it was starting this episode particular started to get frustrating for me yeah well i you know and and it's tough because um but i want to see how plays out i like the setup of the last minute i do i want to see how it plays out yeah i and that's the that's the thing is like, I, I'd like the underlying concepts. I think it's neat, you know? If this is the origin story of the Knights of Wren, I'm, I'm here for it.
Starting point is 00:20:01 Like, you know, I just, I wish the execution was, you know, good. So, you know, but that being said, I got to watch Star Wars with one of my best friends in the whole world. And for that, I'm grateful. And I also got to watch it with all of you out there, uh, who are also. to my best friends in the whole world. Even if you call me soy boy and all those funny names. That makes the best friend here feel like less significant. A little jealous.
Starting point is 00:20:31 A little jealous. That's just kind of weird. What is it? One and two makes three and four. I forgot what the witches say. I don't remember. Whatever their chant is. It doesn't matter.
Starting point is 00:20:44 Look, guys, Michael has somewhere really important. He has to be right now. So I'm going to shut this shit down right now, Michael, because I know he got somewhere to be. And you've already pushed the time for us. So, guys, thank you, Michael, for being here. What did you guys think of the episode? Are we completely wrong? Tell us if we're completely wrong or if we're right.
Starting point is 00:21:03 Or what do you disagree on? What do you agree on? Let us know. We want to know. Bye, Reject Nation.
