Starting point is 00:00:17 We just watched The Amazing Spider-Man. What did you think? I loved it. How, okay, how are you feeling? I have to ask Toby or Andrew. Oh, Andrew, 100%. Andrew 100%. I probably could have told you that before I watched it.

Starting point is 00:00:31 I know, yeah. I hate to say it, except I don't. Yeah, this, I don't know, he's got swagger. He did even at the beginning when, like I said, too, he doesn't feel like such a nerd to me, although he did feel like an outcast kind of, like a loner. But there were just a lot of choices there that felt really solid for me.

Starting point is 00:00:57 Like him just sticking up for the, the kid that was being bullied. I know they got all the brains that you really appreciate. I really care about him being a smart dude. Yeah, Andrew Gaffield has just got swagger. I'm sorry, Toby does it. But Toby had a great, like, boyish charm, too. But, yeah, I mean, what do you think?

Starting point is 00:01:22 I mean, I felt like I got all of the things that I love about Spider-Man, which is, like, so much charisma between him and Emma Stone. obviously. So much of that boyish charm and like the joke, like I remember the jokes that he was making when he was, when he first almost got arrested. And he's like, he was like,

Starting point is 00:01:42 it was just so funny. Like you can tell he's having so much fun and almost like he doesn't understand the gravity yet of like what his powers mean and the responsibility that he has. But also, yeah, and it's so smart. And none of the stuff that was irritating me about Toby. About Toby. Toby, which is he's just kind of a dick.

Starting point is 00:02:05 Like that, in the last movie, he's such a dick. Well, yeah. Yeah, he was, when the, when the venom got a hold of him, he was definitely. Gerardway, Spider-Man. Yeah. But even the first scene in here on the subway, where he was just so effortlessly using his powers. Yeah. I thought that was really cool, too.

Starting point is 00:02:27 It felt altogether, I guess, a little more realistic this movie. I think, I really think so. I think it felt much more grounded. As we can in a superhero world. But even the way that he, like, it just felt so much more grounded in, and is testament to Garfield's acting. I don't know how old he was, actually. I kind of want to know how old he was when they filmed this.

Starting point is 00:02:52 But just his portrayal of a teenage boy was. So I'm not even just a teenage boy, a teenager, you know? Yeah. Age. Also, just like how refreshing to have Gwen Stacy. Oh, it's 27. When he did this? Yeah, he's my age.

Starting point is 00:03:10 Wow. He was my age when he did this. He was playing 17. Wow. Yeah. Yeah, he does very well. He's because he's so skinny, I think. Like, to play so young.

Starting point is 00:03:21 He's very tall and lanky. You know what I mean? Hold on. Now I need to know how old Emma Stone was. Thank you guys for bearing with me. 23. 23. I'm just kidding.

Starting point is 00:03:34 I just felt like it was so refreshing to have her be a part of so much of helping Spider-Man all the way through. Yeah. Using her intelligence, but also like when she was there at the school and she was able to throw him. What a, she handed him the trophy. Did she whack him or did she hand him the trophy? Either way, to have a female not just constantly. constantly need to be rescued. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Starting point is 00:04:00 Really refreshing. Also, I mean, in terms of their romance and their compatibility and, like, that whole storyline, he told her right away. Yeah, love that. He hasn't even told Aunt May, and I felt like Peter, like, one of the central parts from the Toby McGuire, Peter, was like, like, Mary Jane even says at one point, like, that's not your decision to make for me. Right.

Starting point is 00:04:23 And I kind of like that, I mean, I also just love that end moment where he goes, but The best promises are ones that you can't keep. And then that smile, that makes me, that makes me so excited to get to watch the second one. I'm like, I want to go into it right now. How many of these do we have? I think, is it only two or is it three as well? I hope it's three. I really.

Starting point is 00:04:49 Two solo Spider-Man movies. Oh, man. Sorry, girl. All right. Well, we'll be here for the next one. We better, we better savor it. We better save it. I hope.

Starting point is 00:04:59 What was your favorite fight scene? My favorite fight scene? I mean, the N-1 was really sorry. That was me being a lizard. That's a top of Oscorp. I think so. I really like that one. I mean, I don't know.

Starting point is 00:05:15 They're all fun. What was your favorite? I was going to say villain, but I feel like we're kind of in a new franchise now. Yeah. So I guess it's hard to say. The lizard, I don't know. I really like reptiles. So I actually felt for him a lot.

Starting point is 00:05:34 even when they were all shooting him and he was regenerating, I was like, oh. Actually, my favorite fight scene was when he saved that child. Yeah, from the car. And also, I just, oh, the burning, hanging car was very cool.

Starting point is 00:05:48 I mean, and also we got one of the best parts of the original trilogy, which was everyone loves the train scene. They love the community coming together. Right. We got that here. We got the crane operators. Yeah.

Starting point is 00:06:00 I loved it. I really, really, really loved it. I had so much fun. I really. like Mr. Sheen. It's Charlie Sheen's dad. What's his first name? I can't remember.

Starting point is 00:06:10 I can't remember either. But Mr. Sheen and Mrs. Fields together as Ben and Aunt May was really great. I just really loved the other Aunt May also. She made me cry a lot too. Yeah, that's true. Sally. I cried less this movie, but I'm going to be honest, it might be because I was so captivated by Andrew Garfield's boy's charm.

Starting point is 00:06:30 I definitely cried a little more at this one. You did. Yeah. Andrew Garfield. as a pretty impeccable way of always seeming to have some tear in his eye. And maybe it was the lighting in this too, which you commented on, but it was really well done, really, really well done. And also just I loved this score. I thought, I don't know, this one specifically just comparing it to the other ones, it just felt, again, I think I mentioned this earlier, but I felt so much more whimsical and magical and just like that really captured that like 2012.

Starting point is 00:07:04 coming of age feeling I loved it. Which it should. It's a movie about high schoolers, right? So it should have that kind of pop music kind of thing. At times it was kind of like the emo music. Yeah, this one just felt the most like grounded and timeless to me. Yeah. You know? It was a great reboot of this movie, I think, to get.

Starting point is 00:07:26 Because I, you know, to be honest, not being like a real comic book person, there have been times. that I've been like, oh my God, they're doing another Spider-Man? Didn't they just do it? But I feel like I can kind of appreciate now being a mom, too, like understanding, rebooting this every few years to connect with a new generation. Also, I think that your son could maybe watch this one. Definitely not the Toby McGuire ones. Yeah, maybe.

Starting point is 00:07:57 I don't know. I think my husband's secretly showing him all of them anyway, so whatever. Oh, okay. Okay. Starting point is 00:10:26 There's been a lot of debate on who the best Spider-Man is, but the one that I agree with the most is that Toby was a great. Peter Parker, but not the best Spider-Man. Andrew Garfield was not the best Peter Parker, but was a great Spider-Man. Tom Holland is the best Spider-Man so far because he is the first person to play Spider-Man that was able to get the right feel for both Peter Parker and Spider-Man, correct. Now, I know you have not seen the Tom Holland's Spider-Man films yet, but just curious, how would you compare Toby and Andrew's performances at the moment before you get to the seven. He's been in seven films.

Starting point is 00:10:54 Seven films that Tom Holland has been in as Spider-Man. Does he do any other movies? Is that right? Really? I trust Cody. I trust our patrons. Wow, Cody. Dang.

Starting point is 00:11:09 Because I guess, like, because a lot of them are, um, are, um, ensemble based. Oh, right. They're the whole Avengers. So that, but it still counts. I'm drumming today. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Um, I like Andrew more. I like Andrew too.

Starting point is 00:11:23 Pomey and jail. But I understand your point, Cody, about that Andrew was a little bit better as Spider-Man. and Toby was a little bit better as Peter Parker. I like Andrew's Peter Parker better. I get that perspective. Yeah. But I think I like Andrew's Peter Parker better too. I like Andrew's Peter Parker.

Starting point is 00:11:42 Just because he felt like an angsty. He felt angsty and like was doing like he would do things and like not be the most perfect. Like was it messed up that he didn't reach out to Gwen that he didn't go to the funeral? Like in a way, yes. But also I kind of forgave him because I was like he also just witnessed a man die in front of him for the first time. and it's his girlfriend's dad. Right. And, like, he finally had that nice moment with her.

Starting point is 00:12:04 And he made a promise to him. And he made a promise to him. And it's like when Andrews Peter Perker was doing things that could kind of be like, oh my God, what a dick. Like, he didn't call you in weeks, you know? It's like, because he's just a kid and he doesn't know any better. When Toby did some fuck-ass shit. I was like, yes, you know fucking better.

Starting point is 00:12:24 I don't kiss Gwen Stacy upside down. He was also a little bit older, too. Like, he was in college. Like, you know. Exactly. So even more reason to know better. Even more of a reason to know better. Agreed, yes.

Starting point is 00:12:35 I'm still holding a grudge against Toby McQuire. We just watched it like yesterday, guys. I'm still mad. I'm still mad. I like that Andrew Garfield was like more, like, I don't know. He was just so charming and kind and sweet. And you could tell that he was like so anxious, like that scene where I ask Gwen out. And he goes, do you want to do or maybe we could?

Starting point is 00:12:59 And she goes, I either. Yeah. Well, that's, again, just a testament to the two of them's chemistry for sure. That is true. For sure. And that's why they dated in real life, too. Maurice Gray. Hi, Maurice Gray.

Starting point is 00:13:13 Hi, Maurice. Junior. I'm sorry, Jr. I forgot the junior. Did you like the lizard as a villain? How does he compare for you with Green Goblin, Doc Octopus, and Sandman? I just said that too. He's my least favorite villain, but that's because I like lizards personally.

Starting point is 00:13:30 I doc op was by far my favorite villain. I thought, I felt like lizard villain was kind of like a less worked-through version of the green goblin because they had the same things. They're both working at Oscorp. They both like inject themselves and they don't mean to get evil, but then they do. I think I felt a little confused with the lizard storyline of like, like he was so evil for so long and then the second that the antidote comes in, like,

Starting point is 00:14:01 he's just like fine now because then he was still evil like when in between his regenerative periods where he had lost his arm again he was still kind of evil then so i just like the logic there didn't totally i feel like there was a little bit of a pull for him like when he was talking to peter he was still saying like this is going to be good for mankind i felt like there was still a little bit of an inner turmoil for him and also like understanding that like hell yeah he wanted his arm to grow back yeah You know, I do really appreciate with most of these that we do get a good perspective on the villain's motive. Yeah, that is again why I would say the Sandman is kind of even hard for me to call a villain because, like, I get it yet a sick kid. Yeah. You hate Sandman? No, I like Sandman.

Starting point is 00:14:56 No, sorry, sorry, sorry. I just kind of think like the Sandman, I didn't even like totally. even view him as a villain because he comes and helps at the end. I'm just like he's like he's like a complex. Like there's some Marvel characters I think that are like evil and then nice. I don't know. Yeah. But I don't know.

Starting point is 00:15:13 And Green Goblin too. Like there were times when we were kind of rooting for him. Yeah. Green Gobble Jr. Yeah. Green Gobble Junes. Green Gobble Junes. That's like you Maurice Jr.

Starting point is 00:15:25 Green Gobble Junes. Yeah, I don't know. I'll be curious if the next one has the lizard come back, especially after that post-credit scene. That was our first post-credit scene. We're like, oh, wait. All right. Pavel.

Starting point is 00:15:58 Hello. Do you think the movie, do you think the movie, to put it, bluntly earned its rights to exist. Do you think the movie, to put it bluntly, it earned its rights to exist? When the movie came out, people were still high on Toby's Spidey and were actually hoping for some redemption after Spider-Man 3. The moment this was announced, people went, but why? That's what I just say.

Starting point is 00:16:27 Just do a fourth one with Toby. What do you think? My hot take is that while, hearts of it felt redundant. It did give us a cool bits like Andrew himself and the crane bit at the end. It's like the essence of Spider-Man. Thank you. P.S.

Starting point is 00:17:08 Because basically a lot of people were like, do a fourth. Do a fourth with Toby, especially because like that, that arc for him was a fucking mess. I love Andrew a Spider-Man, and I think it earns its right to exist, like, even completely separately. And also, like, Andrew and Emma together, amazing. They would have never dated if not for this film. I don't know. I'm very pro-Andrew.

Starting point is 00:17:32 I agreed. I'm very, very pro Andrew. I'm very, very pro Andrew as well. And then I hate to say it, you guys, but I will admit, again, I am a woman on the internet. I know some things about films just because that's how the internet works. I think it makes it so worth it for the Spider-Man that happens, that I've seen happens later in the new Marvel one. I don't know which one it was. The Spider-Man meme coming to life.

Starting point is 00:17:59 Oh, I see. I see. Yeah. Jay Reston. Question, would you like powers from radioactive spider? Or, I'm sorry, question, would you like powers from radioactive spout? I give up today. Why?

Starting point is 00:18:17 I'll do it. Why? Jay Rushden asks. Question, would you like powers from a radioactive spider? And what do you think you would do with your powers? That's a good question. I would love powers from a radioactive spider. Yeah, I would be Spider-Man.

Starting point is 00:18:34 Do I want to be Spider-Man? I'd be how sticky. No, I just want to swing from the web. Yeah, I feel like I would definitely enjoy the swinging, especially being back in New York City, swinging through the city. That would be rad. Is there another superpower you would like to have, Jackie? I, I mean, this feels like lame.

Starting point is 00:18:58 Tell me. Okay, I want to be able to turn into a bird. I mean, that's not lame. I don't like birds, though. I want to be able to fly. So we couldn't be friends anymore. I want to fly. Okay.

Starting point is 00:19:09 Because I would definitely be a spider or a reptile. All the lizards. Yeah. You would eat me. I would definitely like to be a reptile or a spider or a bug. You could be a bum. Maybe not a spider, though. I would be a butterfly.

Starting point is 00:19:22 Yeah, I was going to say it'd be like a ladybug. A butterfly. I think that my power, yeah, would probably, I mean, the webs are pretty cool. Starting point is 00:20:03 again. I pick one power. It would be teleportation because I'm always late. And I just think it would like save me. I'd save so much money. I'd save so much money on gas. Yeah, you wouldn't need a car at me. I wouldn't need a car. It would be great. So that's what I pick. True, true, true.

Starting point is 00:20:18 Done. I like it. I like it. All right. Final question. Jaden Rhodes, I'm going to try. This movie is easily the worst Spider-Man movie. What? I feel like it just forgets what the character Spider-Man is. Wow. And they kind of make him cool.

Starting point is 00:20:34 So why can't Spider-Man be cool? He even does this really stupid thing that completely outs him as Spider-Man, like when he threw the football and it dints the field goal. But nobody even thinks that it could be Spider-Man. You did say he should be playing sports. And that just comes down to being too really lazy riding. Okay, but what if I said, what if I said, but he's so handsome. So they're not going to like that one.

Starting point is 00:21:02 They're not going to like that. I mean, I feel like that's not totally out of the realm of reality. Don't people break the backboards in basketball all the time? Or is that not a real thing? They don't. I don't know. That's only in movies. Yeah, I don't know about that.

Starting point is 00:21:16 All right, never mind. Jaden. That's fair, Jaden. I respectfully. But I respectfully disagree. I really enjoyed this one. Speak on it, Paige. But I.

Starting point is 00:21:29 But I. respect you, Jaden, and I respect your opinion, and I get where you're coming from. I think at the end of the day, that didn't bother me because I'm like, well, he's a Spider-Man, so I'm already, like, giving into the suspension of disbelief. You know, I'm just leaning in, so I'm like, well, he's a, he's a man that's a spider. Yeah, I think that we both felt like this one was kind of grounded, a little more grounded in reality. Spider-Man.

Starting point is 00:21:56 Maybe just his character felt really grounded in reality, too, and just being that moody teenager, too. Yeah. Yeah, I agree. I like to say, yeah. I need to be nicer to Aunt May a lot. I mean, she lost her husband and then was basically left at home, like, all the time. I mean, at the end of the day, like, the Toby ones feel a little bit more unrelatable

Starting point is 00:22:22 to me because they were created in a time that is just, like, different. And these, the writing in this one and the characters, they, it just felt so fresh. And I'm going to relate to it more because again, I was in high school when this film came out. So like, I think that I have a natural bias of like, I'm going to like this one more. When I was, when I was like in high school, when I was 13, 14, Andrew Garfield was a crush of mine. And I love Emma Stone, one of my favorite actresses, arguably also a crush of mine. so I'm super biased so do with my opinion what you will it's wrong all right any final thoughts page nope I got to go party
