With Captain America: Brave New World about to premiere, Coy Jandreau (DC Studios) & John Humphrey react to the 1993 thriller classic The Fugitive, directed by Andrew Davis. This high-stakes action-packed film stars Harrison Ford (Star Wars, Indiana Jones) as Dr. Richard Kimble, a man wrongfully convicted of his wife’s murder who must evade capture while hunting for the real killer. Hot on his trail is the relentless U.S. Marshal Sam Gerard, played by Tommy Lee Jones (No Country for Old Men, Men in Black), in an Academy Award-winning performance. The film also features supporting performances from Sela Ward (House, The Day After Tomorrow) as Helen Kimble, Joe Pantoliano (The Matrix, Bad Boys) as Cosmo Renfro, and Andreas Katsulas (Babylon 5, Executive Decision) as the mysterious one-armed man, Fredrick Sykes. Coy & John break down the most intense and thrilling moments, including the legendary train crash escape, the iconic dam jump, and the gripping final showdown. They also discuss some of the film’s most famous quotes, such as “I didn’t kill my wife!” and the legendary comeback, “I don’t care,” delivered with perfection by Tommy Lee Jones. Join them as they relive the suspense, discuss its impact, and reflect on why The Fugitive remains one of the greatest action thrillers of all time. This video is brought to you by acorns and liquid IV. More on them in just a bit. We are feeling cosmic introspective and verbose. And verbose. Roll that bumper.
Starting point is 00:01:43 Let's do this thing. Cinema. God, that was good. That was good. The fugitive John. El fugitivo, I'm sure, is the translation there. Man. Wowie.
Starting point is 00:02:03 I love that so much that, like, it changes Harrison Ford. It changes Tommy Lee Jones in my eyes. It actually lives up to, like, everyone, like, the fugitive. And I'm so glad I didn't remember even moments. Like I said, I must have had it on at life. In life, it must have been flipping on USA, TBS, T&T. It must have occurred. Sure.
Starting point is 00:02:32 But I'm so glad that I got to live that as an adult. Like, I'm so glad I didn't see that just too young. Yeah. And, like, I got to live that at the right time. Yeah. You know, it's, it's so funny because, yeah, this was such a fresh watch. And, like, certainly, yeah, it's like from having it on in the house as a kid and knowing that this is, like, definitely, like, one of my, one of my family.
Starting point is 00:02:56 I remember growing up, this was like a family favorite. it and again having i might have like it might have even been on since then but like yeah it's been i don't know if i've ever fully watched it with my adult mind and so to be here now and to take it in like this like this was a great example of so many things and it was so gratifying to be like this is the power of like quality filmmaking and and there are a lot of versions of what quality filmmaking means but like you know this is a movie that yes has a lot of like fun and exploitative elements that are easy to make thrilling and fun and effective. You know, it's a murder mystery, chase movie slash, you know, police procedural thing.
Starting point is 00:03:38 And we're fading back in on the city. And we actually filmed in Chicago? Yeah, dude. And the Great Smoky Mountain, Raleigh, North Carolina. Oh, my God, there's ending on some fireworks here. Fireworks, this is cinema. This is how you made movies. Why not?
Starting point is 00:03:49 Warner Brothers 93. Oh, yeah, but like this, it took me back to the kind of thing. thing where you're just like, man, if you just get like a really tight script and some really great actors, like this is a genre that has endured and it's certainly a genre that has tropes and it's a classic, you know, staple of cinema. And yet this was just, yeah, like such a lively, flavorful version of that and had so much punch and energy and it knew when to, you know, go really big and destructive at times, but then to really draw you back in with like this intimate mystery and yeah like really kind of flesh out these two perspectives that slowly learn
Starting point is 00:04:34 to meet in the middle and it's just like yeah there's so many great moving parts like to start from you see the event happening and you get these little moments inside his head from like earlier in the night and now sitting in the you know interrogation room and all that and it starts out as the simple thing just a guy comes home he finds his wife has been murdered he saw the guy who did it even, he got into a scuffle with him, but now he's been wrongfully, you know, pinned with the murder and he's going to jail. But then there's so much more to that, and it becomes this conspiracy that grows out of all that. And it's not even like he's fully aware of that at first, but they show you, yeah, these like early scenes to establish him in his, you know, element, but
Starting point is 00:05:10 that are also, you know, going to come back later to flesh out what the true mystery is at hand and to, I love when, and it's a mark of a good murder mystery slash, you know, wrongfully accused character mystery of when you know it starts out feeling like a freak random occurrence almost and then slowly grows into like no this was a very intentional like conspiracy and it's easy to lose people in that
Starting point is 00:05:34 because this was like so well tempered it was like a robbery that didn't become a robbery because he stopped him and they set that up so cleanly and so well and then they added like the gloves and I added a few like sprinkling in but you're right when it's done well it just a haas multiple times like I was going aha
Starting point is 00:05:49 throughout the film and then it kept tricking me and I loved the arcs of this. Like the first act being an action movie that had some insane action. I kept being like, well, what will they do next? And then the second act was like a detective story where Harrison Ford's like doing cop work. And then the third act is all of that combining into like chases and this crazy claustrophobic like cat and mouse game with all of the things from the rest of the film. Like this thing is paste like one of the best paste films I think I've ever seen. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:06:17 Incredible pacing and a really, really, really good hand. of the two kind of central halves of the story because I think it's really smart and conscientious thing to have, you know, Tommy Lee Jones, the marshal, he's hot on the trail of Richard Kimball. And yet, like, Richard Kimball also has to be believably brilliant and has to, like, I love the motif that he takes on or the choice that he takes on the actual detective work
Starting point is 00:06:43 of figuring out this murder, even though you would think in your mind, like, well, you know, Tommy Lee Jones is the law enforcement guy. theoretically he should be doing this and yet he's doing so much to track Kimball down and because we know Kimball is so smart and capable and they are good at portraying that in a way that feels plausible. It adds to that tension of like you know Tommy Lee Jones
Starting point is 00:07:03 and his team have to work for it and you know how good at this Tommy Lee Jones is but when you have two characters that are both like supremely adept you can go way too far and make it like completely unbelievable and rob everything of tension. Whereas this had so much tension and it wasn't just like oh Tommy Lee Jones shows up
Starting point is 00:07:19 five minutes after every scene to repeat the same info like they put so much flavor on both sides and the journey without being too you know ham-fisted with it of him coming to see Kimball's perspective and the way Kimball leads him to like no I'm just going to like you're following me I'm just going to use that to my advantage to leave you the trail of truth crumbs yeah you know like oh like I and him saying
Starting point is 00:07:42 from the beginning like I don't care and him learning from that like no one cares I have to do this I have to do how that colors the entire experience because the case was closed and like then the chicago cops are against him not just trying to hunt him so that escalates the stakes i i also really love that everything you just said allowed the stakes to get like little sprinkles of attitude attitude and then it just at crescendos like it it builds and builds and it literally has like every form of transportation every form of foot chase every like it is one you know it reminds me of it reminds me a bad max fury road where it's one big vector
Starting point is 00:08:15 and then back yeah and like this is that with a drama thriller where it's you just go on a chase the whole time and then have to double back to look at all the crumbs you left. Yeah. So this is... You got to run away to regroup and then run right back to the center of everything.
Starting point is 00:08:29 Because you can't escape. Like you can... Everyone gets caught. 99% yeah. The only escape is proving your innocence. And I think there's a nice poetry in the fact that they, you know, they're on his trail
Starting point is 00:08:41 and they find the other guy. And the other guy just ran off and tried to kind of, you know, lie low. Yeah. And like, you know, it shows that's what could... Will and, inevitably happen. Yeah, and it's like this, it's an instance of in a pretty, you know, not 100% grounded might not be the right word, even though it is, you know, it has that kind of tone. That's a little bit of peripheral magic that I did think was like, wow, what are the odds? But also like, of course.
Starting point is 00:09:07 Well, they're tracking everyone. So it's beautiful when they put it in. Yeah. And then like not long after they find the guy in the house that's like, you know, if you're paying cash for a room for cheap, that's not. And him too. That might not be the safest. Like those. people are probably not you know handling things legally everywhere reject nation how are you feeling i've been thinking a lot about feelings lately maybe because it's new years and new year's resolutions they can be tough to stick to don't you know i can't count how many times i've set a goal only to let it fizzle out by february but what if some of those goals could be made automatic you just need a good transition to talk about it and you know what i'm excited to talk about it and it's today's sponsor acorns why i'm excited because i personally use acorns myself so it's exciting just to share it with all of you because they make it incredibly easy to start automatically saving and investing so your money has a chance to grow.
Starting point is 00:09:56 You know, you've always heard that forever. Have your money worked for you. And this is a great opportunity to do it. Here's what was told to me before I signed up and I found it to be absolutely true. Number one, you don't need to be an expert. They recommend a diverse portfolio that fits your goals. You don't need a ton of money. You can start investing with as little as $5 or whatever spare change you got.
Starting point is 00:10:12 And it's quick. You can set up your account and start investing in like five minutes. Because if you're anything like me, investing always felt intimidating. I felt like it was exclusive for, like, the people who had Rich Dad pour down when they were like two years old. But Acorns, they made it simple, and it is pretty cool, like, relief feeling how every month I get to check out my Acorn's account. Watch it grow for a better financial future. It's pretty awesome. So I've seen firsthand how powerful it can be, and there's also another reject here.
Starting point is 00:10:37 Won't say who it is, but it's one of the two women. Good clue. Where they were telling me a story before I signed up for Acorns, how one time it actually got them out of a very big financial bind. And that always stuck with me because it's a reminder that small actions we take today can make a huge difference down the line. If you've been thinking about getting started with investing or you just know you got to get it going. Here's your sign right now. You head to Acorns.com slash Rejects or down on the Acorns app to start saving and investing for your future today. Once again, Acorns.
Starting point is 00:11:05 Supporting them supports the channel. But more importantly, it supports your bank account. Because of the subject matter, there's one thing I got to say. Payne on client endorsement compensation provides incentive to positively promote acorns. Tier 1 compensation provided investing involves risk. Acorns advisor LLC and SEC registered investment advisor. review important disclosures, acorns.com slash reex. Thank you again, Acorns for sponsoring this video. All right, I'll admit it. And maybe you guys have noticed during the holidays, I let myself go a little bit.
Starting point is 00:11:25 I put on some weight, and for the past 10 days, I have successfully been in a caloric deficit. This whole new eating regimen, so staying extra hydrated has been quite crucial for me lately. So while I've been drinking tons of water, I've also been incorporating today's sponsor again, a product I have already been using since before we partner with them, liquid ivy. So here's why I've been leaning on their sugar-free high. hydration multiplier. One stick in 16 ounces of water hydrates better than water alone. It's powered by their LIV hydroscience formula, which delivers three times the electrolytes of the leading sports drinks, packed with essential vitamins like B12 and vitamin C, giving me that extra boost to support recovery and energy levels. And the flavors, honestly, they're incredible and sometimes
Starting point is 00:12:04 I just mix them with my protein shakes or I just drink them on their own. Every one I've tried is refreshing, smooth, and doesn't have that overly sweet aftertaste you get with some other products. All in all, I'm very grateful for liquid IV. Again, I've already been using their product. While this is yes and agreed upon endorsement, I was like, well, it's a no-brainer to endorse them, considering how much benefits I feel when I use their product. It's made staying hydrated so much easier. So whether you're working out or cutting calories, or just pushing through a busy day and don't want to take caffeine, it's one of the quickest simplest ways to give your body what it needs to feel its best. So like even if you're not on a strict diet or intense
Starting point is 00:12:38 workout plan, staying properly hydrated, supports energy levels, focus, and just overall wellness. I mean, let's face it, we could all use a little bit more balance in our our lives. So if you've been thinking about trying it, or even if you haven't, take this as a sign. The fact that you made it this far, take it as a sign. Head to liquid iv.com and use code rejects for 20% off your first order. That's 20% off when you use code rejects at liquid ivy. Give it a try. It made such a difference for me and I think it will for you too. Thank you again, Liquid Ivy. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And so like the, it's just so smart and conscientious in terms of, yeah, the ways in which you get little victories, the ways in which those little victories are taken
Starting point is 00:13:15 a way the way you know little circumstances it's a combination of his cunning and his ability to adapt in the moment richard kimball uh along with certain moments of of like lucky chance you know it's like just the right amount of both to remain plausible it's like there's always a bit of a lick in a prayer i would imagine in any you got to feel that sort of breathlessness of like just scraped it by you yeah but there's not too many magic beans no like there's not too many moments of like that's a little much like that's a little much like you're Like it always feels just enough. It was literally that moment where they found the other guy he let go.
Starting point is 00:13:50 You know, where I was like, oh, like, again, what are the odds? But it was like just enough again. And that segwayed into that character beat with him and the guy with the ponytail. Which was another, like, another great thing this movie did throughout was like no character was wasted. Even the little moments where you're just checking in with Gerard and company and he's just spouting out orders. Like they always felt like a live. characters. And this is one of those movies where like so much is on the page.
Starting point is 00:14:18 And I have to imagine that the supporting dialogue was as flavorful or pretty close. But you also have actors who clearly are just creating these personalities and living them together. And doing the thing that great TV actors do where they come in and they give a lived in character exposition and you leave and you never feel like that was exposition heavy. Like there's
Starting point is 00:14:34 so much exposition of this. And in fact the first 10 minutes like I thought the first act of this would be in the courtroom. And that's done in the credits. He's already going to prison. In the credits. And it's such a great pro lot. Like it's artfully handled and it sets up this motif of this constant intercutting that you're doing throughout the movie and seeing little pieces and perspectives and then fleshing them out slowly as time goes on. And yeah, you have these expositions, but they also feel appropriately, you know, news report, you know, court transcript, things like that.
Starting point is 00:15:09 Like they feel like they almost dip momentarily into some kind of docu crime, true crime, kind of. of thing and uh yeah just like the resources that went into like this is the quintessential you know big scale hollywood thriller movie in like the it's like a plato's perfect heaven version of that where you're like when it all goes top notch everything and like you said the pacing and the tension and release is like so great and there's there's humor like it's it's dark in a lot of ways and from my the echoes i would imagine as a kid like it was always like flashing of frantic, desperate faces and like the low-key piano tones.
Starting point is 00:15:48 I just have very sinister recollections of this movie and feeling very sort of compelled but unnerved. And watching this again, I was like, man, this is low-key hilarious just because of like the context and the irony and it's all just enough. It's so funny. And that funny is like your diaphragm expanding
Starting point is 00:16:05 from the tension. Like it's like, uh, like it's getting all that out. And I, so I said at the top, like I think this is probably my favorite Harrison Ford movie. And Empire Strikes Back is there. Blade Runner 2049 is there. But like those are beholden to franchises.
Starting point is 00:16:19 Like this in two hours and 10 minutes or whatever gives me an incredible, full, lived in experience. Like what a movie. I feel like I can't wait to show my kids that don't even exist this movie. Like I said, this is the daddest movie ever. And I cannot wait to be like, it's Saturday watching dad time. This is a dad movie, but this is also just, it's like when the single is also a great song anyway. It's like this is a great movie And also like
Starting point is 00:16:48 The gold standard of like Oh yeah, dad picked out a bang Yeah I feel great about this I love this I mean I adored this movie Sometimes when movies are good I have less to say
Starting point is 00:16:58 But I think this is one of those Where it's just like Glowing Review Four and a half stars Absolutely like I just only Because I've only given 25 films five stars in history Four and a half stars
Starting point is 00:17:08 It is strong argument Sit on it for a day I need to see it I have a twice rule All right We're off to a strong star We are absolutely approaching 4.75. I just can't.
Starting point is 00:17:19 I have to see it twice for I can get that rare accolade. But God damn. I'm exhausted from joy, from tension, from happiness, from laughter. I feel like this is going to be one of those movies where I'm going to be that asshole. It's like, dude, have you seen the fugitive? And everyone's like, yeah, in 93. Like, it's such a known quantity. Like, dude, have you tried putting peanut butter with jelly?
Starting point is 00:17:42 Like, it's such a thing that is like, correct. This is timeless, though, man. I feel like this is a great... I want to show the next generation. Yeah, this is one of those movies that I feel like no matter who you are... Where you're from? As long as you...
Starting point is 00:17:55 You'll always love the future. Well, you know, it's a low-key bromance, you know, by the end, you can see the admiration. Curmudgeons, barks of flying. Yeah, like, this is one of those movies where, yeah, I feel like, even if this genre isn't necessarily your thing, it's easy to get on board with Harrison Ford.
Starting point is 00:18:11 The drama hits, the thrills hit. got really great production value like it's really well made and uh and yeah like as much as it would be like really as it go back to 993 i'm like you know this is thrilling anytime yeah this is like any thriller today ought to take a look and just you know take some notes you know 32 years it's insane right my math and i mean like especially too as we get further away from the 90s there is that cultural appraisal of like you know this was there are some high watermarks in cinema in that decade too and i feel like this is absolutely one of those films you can go like what are some of the best films of the 90s that
Starting point is 00:18:48 you know don't feel dated or anything like that and like this absolutely would come straight to mind I feel like yeah there was like Jurassic Park and like that that just like yeah yeah and again good just like this didn't seem encumbered by anything and that's the beauty is like this seemed to have all the things it needed to be exactly you know just on the mark what it wanted to be thank you everyone that made the fugitive yeah that was an experience reject nation If there's anything even in this, leave a comment below. If anything even comes close to the fugitive. Ah, man, get off my path.
Starting point is 00:19:26 Give me back my family. That was incredible if you died. That's true. Unfortunately. That's true. RIPC award. Man, that was good. That was great, gang.
Starting point is 00:19:34 Leave us your thoughts. What movie comes close to the fugitive? Leave it in the comments below and we'll catch you for the next one. This clearly made our day better. Yeah, we left, and it's funny, and a movie like this with heavy, again, heavy subject matter, and it's a lot of characters who are experiencing angst, I'm like, I feel catharsed, I had a block. Like, that's the true, and then we'll close out. That's a really fun thing to experience.
Starting point is 00:20:03 When you're watching something that isn't exactly the kind of genre that should leave you feeling like, yeah. Yeah, I'll even go higher than that. I had to move scheduling around because I got evacuated from my home this week and then I had dinner plans tonight that I was really excited for and then I didn't want to not be filming
Starting point is 00:20:22 all week so I canceled all my plans and I have no regrets to beat wow that's how good put that on the DVD box yeah you want a lot you want a trailer that on the pull quote canceled all my plans
Starting point is 00:20:34 no regrets no regrets Coach Andro Real Redigs 2025 32 years after release Thank you for watching it with this Tomato meter Get this to 100 1%. That's right.
Starting point is 00:20:44 We'll see you next time, gang. I don't care. Brian J. 79. Okay. So maybe there was a point in time where we looked at with the name Brian means. I don't remember what's, I can't have, I don't have like any like real guess as to what it can mean. So I'm going to try it for real right now to guess what Brian means. Bible holder.
Starting point is 00:21:11 Bible holder. going with a bright warrior let's look it up john it up all right we're looking up what brian means to see how close we know you buddy hit enter all right we're going to expand this the name brian is a masculine name of irish origin that means higher noble it is also associated with strength virtue and bravery ah what did you what did you what did you guess uh no like bright Warrior. And yours is way closer. Yours is way closer.
Starting point is 00:21:42 How did you draw that conclusion? You went to the br? And like what bruh usually means? Yeah, brie. I just associated literally with bright. Oh, okay. That was not a very literary guess. I mean, yours is extremely closer than mine.
Starting point is 00:21:55 I in at the end, I guess, because like barbarian or something like any, any, I don't know, the IAN suffix suggests that you're like, wow, you're doing stuff to me. So, uh. All right. You know, you're doing something active. So, but this is, you know, I think we both missed out in the noble, nobility. Nah, man. Brian, thanks for being here. Now you know what your freaking name means.
Starting point is 00:22:18 Yeah, you're a creature of Irish folklore. Killing it.
