We all need someone to make us believe.

More on them and just a bit.
I can't believe she had to watch that.
Abby, you're going to die?
I said, slow, terrible, freaking death, dude.
You got it coming.
I said everyone inside is screwed up outside people are safe.
I mean, I've never been that wrong in my life.
Yeah.
I can't believe that just happened.
Wow.
That was insane.
Well, gang.
Is he just not in the show now?
pissed. That's what it
feels like. That's how it seems.
I'm like, is it possible in the
body bag that he can get
out like. Is there some special cordescepts
that will, yeah, wake him back out?
Could her blood save him somehow? Like
Oh, could her blood save him? No, I don't
think, babe. I don't know.
Maybe. Not from regular murder.
Oh, I don't like
this. Well, there
are the show.
I know.
I just.
And Abby killed him in cold blood
And he saved her life
And it is different than what Joel did
Although I understand from her perspective it's not
Well yeah
From her perspective I'm sure it's like divine providence
That he should be the one
I'm sure there's some kind of conflict
That we'll touch on at some point about how like
He picked you up and you know
In good faith tried to save you
But I mean yeah given what her backstory is like
What life
You know that and yeah
It's the exact kind of motivation that
a million protagonists have
that we're fine with them killing whoever
to get to the bottom of.
Yeah, because he killed, you know, 18
of her friends, family, whatever they were.
I get it, but like.
And the whole unarmed, we don't shoot unarmed people
thing, like certainly
resonates there too.
And at the end of season one, you do have that
thought in your mind of like, man, Joel's
going down, you know,
into the deep end, yeah.
I wonder, though, if Ellie and
Abby can end the cycle because I don't want to end the cycle I'm pissed at her I want
Abby to freaking die yeah slowly I agree with you like heartedly in this moment sane but I agree
that's like the like what you're saying rocks is like the better way because so that we're not
constantly at odds with the fireflies because then how do we actually fight all of these
cortisps who are now in the town and going to take all of us over we have to
to find a way to get together.
It's just like even the people around Abby were even looking at her prior to her even
getting the golf club being like, I don't know how they, they don't feel good about it.
Like even the girl was like, I'm sorry, I have to put Dina to sleep.
And each one of them had a very specific pickup of sort of looking at Abby like they were
unsure, even though five years they've been talking about this.
So it's only good writing that they would continue.
None of them seemed unsure that he should die.
They all were on that page of five years.
Just how long, you know, like how she was going about it, I think.
Yeah, none of them seemed okay with that.
But also nobody, none of them stopped her.
I agree with you.
And that guy knew he was going to kick Elle in the face when she's crying on the ground.
And she's like, let him go.
And I'm like, they're leaving.
And he goes to kick her in the face.
I'm like, you all need to die now.
I'm kind of surprised.
this isn't fair to say about her,
but that Ellie wasn't able to do more in this scenario.
Yeah.
Like she walks in and she gets stripped of her weapon, you know,
like,
and she had the leg up of like the element of surprise.
And I'm sure that's playing in her head too.
Like, why couldn't I have saved him?
And then she has to watch it.
Yeah.
Because not even Dina had to watch it, you know, like.
Well, and she's probably too in sort of a shook up place
because she's already heard on the radio like they're looking for joy.
She's up with Joel.
She wanted to go on this patrol with Joel and wasn't able to go.
And they ended on bad terms.
Even though she says we're always going to be Ellie and Joel.
Springs here, baseball's in full swing.

We got to go back and listen to that monologue again.
Yeah, most definitely.
Also, we got to go back and thank the fine folks at Prepper
for chopping these highlights together
and for, you know, flattering the moments of the show,
for taking care of the things that keep us,
from getting this visible on YouTube
and all the other ins-between
odds and ends. We
appreciate their work very, very mightily.
And yeah,
Rejectnationshop.com.
I, this is...
Was there no music when this ended? Is that what happened?
We just jumped into it
because there was no music. We just started talking.
I feel like I blacked out. What happened?
I think we were just all, yeah, kind of in this quiet.
I think, yeah, it just leaves you in that shock place.
And then, you know, because yeah, like,
Especially on the second episode, it's funny, especially, and not to say that either is related, because obviously the game for this pre-sees, and I'm going to assume this is what happens in the game.
Imagine if it's not?
Oh, my God.
I remember the, like, I remember all I know about The Last of Us 2 really is that it's a very divisive game.
And like amongst fans, they're split 50-50 on how they feel about it.
Yeah, some people really love, love that game. Some people really hate what they did with that game.
Where are people at? Greg, Aaron and Andrew. I don't know where Aaron and Andrew are necessarily. I remember Greg saying that at first he was certainly like upset and taken aback at certain elements. And I don't know if that only means this or if it means anything else. But yeah, but that it's one of his favorite games of all time, you know, and the story. He's always talked up the quality of the story. So, you know,
I had somebody tweet at me this week and say
I hope you like golf with no context
there you have it
there you have it
and I'm just writing that in my head now
yep
I got it and was like
what a weird thing to message me
didn't say anything about last
about just said I hope you like golf and I was like
huh
I have no feelings on it actually
go play 18 Joles
so this must be once in the game
it must be yeah and I and
Abby, I believe, is a divisive character, and now we know why.
Can I tell you guys something?
I think that was the wrong move.
And maybe I won't by the end of the season.
Okay.
But I, like, plot-wise, I actually don't, I wish they didn't do that.
It's not like a sad death, like Ned Stark's death, where I was like, oh, this is the, this
is the impetus for the rest.
And, like, I actually think they should not have killed him.
And again, I might eat chrome, eat my work.
but like this show to me, the best part of the show is the two of them.
I agree.
So I actually don't feel like I'm looking forward to this show as much anymore, which
again, I can feel totally different by the end, but that is how I feel right now.
I don't blame you.
And I feel I have a sneaking suspicion that probably a lot of people wouldn't because I have
a feeling this is probably, again, just speculating about how this relates to the game.
I feel like that was probably a moment where a lot of people would rage quit and then cool off maybe come back and give the, you know, yeah, exactly, see if the rest of the story can earn this.
And I am, yeah, curious because there are aspects of this in terms of just, yeah, just the enjoyment of watching Pedro Pascow and Belle Ramsey together, Joel and Elias characters, you know, obviously you wish you had more time before this shocking turn of events comes down.
on the pike. But at the same time, if you really want something like that to hit and also
encapsulate that sort of like anything can happen, sort of violent nature of a reality such
as this one, you're like, you're sitting there in the moment. You're like, what could they possibly
do to, like, the only thing I could think of is like, oh, her need to torture him will be the thing
that creates an out or create some kind of opportunity for him to escape for now, even if she
does kill him down the line or something like that. You know, like they introduce this
character very pointedly in the first episode. You don't spend much time with her, but you do get
a very clear idea of her motivation. And so, yeah, here, I think it is interesting in a
structural sense because you're not expecting this to happen. And everything you know about
television structure tells you like, oh, well, there's got to be something. And especially on the
heels of a moment in the alleyway with Tommy where he's like, you know, exhausting the flamethrower.
And then just in the nick of time, the big dude keels over.
because it was just enough.
He's finally cooked just to the right temperature
that he's no longer able to move.
And yeah, like it's,
it is maddening,
which I think is like kind of bold and audacious.
It's been a while since Game of Thrones
is a prime example that loses this quality over time.
But yeah,
where you feel like,
oh, damn,
anything can happen and nobody is safe.
And I...
This is episode two.
Yeah.
Well, it makes me think of what I know
about the new Derrida Devil show
because they,
I think there's a major sort of character death
early on that people weren't expecting
that informs most of
or a lot of things about the season.
That's episode one.
You expected it on a premiere or finale?
This is episode two.
Tara, are you more or less excited
about the show now that he's got?
Like, what's your response to that?
I'm just mad right now.
I'm not as excited.
She's sitting there going like this.
I'm like still in shock.
I do think that
writing wise
they had to
because it had been five years
you have to have Abby
have the conviction
to kill him
when she has the opportunity
I thought
there might be something
that would come in
or that Elle would come in
get a shot off
you know and like
he could maybe still live
but right now
I'm like
I
what?
I was stoked on
this
episode, meaning how they're opening it with the weapons going down, I thought was really smart.
It's really great to look at when they use, like, when they're intelligent about how do we
kill these MREFers and they put the gasoline takes down.
I love that.
Shoot into it.
Let's freaking go.
I'm like, oh, this is so exciting.
It's so great.
And then I'm like, maybe the town won't make it.
But like, Joel and Elle, well, right?
No.
but the town is like exactly it's like oh we'll get the two of them back out on the road like last time it's just like it's like I don't I don't know man I don't know I'm I'm not excited but I'm interested to see what the next episode holds for us if it takes place right after the fact or if they time jump a little bit I mean that town they got a while to clean up all those dead bodies up in there I don't know how they're going to deal with that and
and now coming back, you know, Joel's dead.
And was Dina on the other horse right back?
Yeah, she was.
She was awake and going and it's like, I just, I don't know.
I'm still in shock.
I just, that's it.
I don't have many more words.
He's been doing press all for the whole season.
So I'm wondering, are we going to get,
are we going to flash instead of Tara,
you're saying we could go forward?
Are we going to go back and see more of what's happened
the last five years so that we can keep Pedro in the show?
Oh, I wonder that.
That's a good idea because we kind of don't know why they were so tumultuous, right?
After he said, I promise you, right?
And then maybe she rethought things, but then what happened after the five years that they were so sort of separated, meaning Joel and Elle, I don't know.
Because otherwise, he's not in the show unless he becomes some kind of force ghost with her of like, even in her mind what he would feel or think.
Maybe they have a taxidermy Joel in the town.
Oh my God.
Yeah, they just get like a speaker and someone does like a recording of him saying fun phrases.
It's like Tommy is clear.
I think his relationship with Ellie is going to become next level strong.
But I do really wonder just technically speaking, would Pedro have done all of this press with Bella to be in two episodes?
I think so because it would be too much of a weird.
I can't stand you guys right now.
I think you're right, but I'm pissed at you guys.
It would be so weird if he didn't show up for the press on this because he's been so positive about the show.
Everyone loves him on the show.
Like, yeah, it would be either a sign that something is wrong or a cause for people to go out and be like, well, that's because.
And then, you know.
But do you guys think, how many episodes is this season 10?
I don't know.
Was it a last one, nine?
That was eight or nine.
Somewhere between eight and ten is my guess.
So he's been in one and two.
How many total episodes?
Do you think he's going to be in this season?
I don't even know.
You think this is the last that we're going to see of him?
No.
The flashback.
I think you're right.
So, four.
Okay.
I'm very fascinated to know.
Yeah.
It's either all of them or we're done.
I know.
I, uh, maybe one flashback episode.
I, like, want to just go, like, bury my head in water.
I know.
Yeah.
It's so depressing.
Yeah.
And, yeah, it's that thing.
where like it starts to do the reality starts to dawn on you like there's a point in during
you know we're used to watching so much stuff where they try and fake you out that the main
character is going to die or one of the main character is going to die and that i wouldn't let it go i was
like no no he's good in the bag so yeah i know i was like and then you said her blood and i was like
yeah give her give him your blood and maybe you'll survive because yeah it speaks to that part
of you that's kind of like willing to try anything and like i like i like that in the sense that like
it's definitely creating a feeling it's definitely had me engaged emotionally and intellectually
as a viewer bargaining with the situation bargaining with again what we know about TV and how
these stories tend to go so like on the one hand I'm like very bold very audacious because again
like we were saying they're going like no he's got to get out right and you know it's only
episode two uh but at the same time like what an inciting incident for the story and then the
question to me also becomes then like you know I know some people rage quit the
game and still last of us part two
the game has a lot
of acclaim and is a very successful
game from what I understand so it's not like
it torpedoed it but at the same time
I'm like I wonder if a certain
amount of viewers will just tune out after
this or you know if everybody will
kind of have that reaction of like well I don't
like it but let's see where this goes
I mean you get it we have to see
everybody's got to see but I know
I'm so with you I'm here's
something I'm curious about that is
related to his death but is moving
off of it for a second, kind of.
So here's what we
know. Dina has passed out
while the fireflies
tell the story kind of of what happened.
So if she had the ability to
hear at all, she might know
some of what happened. Even if she
doesn't, what she does know
is that these are like the remaining
fireflies, because that's before she was passed
out. She was like putting pieces
together or that they were after Joel.
Yeah, she can identify everybody.
So she's definitely, well,
More so than that, Ellie right now has no idea why they just killed Joel.
So Dina is going to be able to fill in some pieces for her.
And I wonder if Ellie's going to be able to immediately connect that she was, that he killed everybody in the hospital.
And that when he said, I swear, that was not true.
And this was the vengeance from that.
Because we still don't believe that she knows that, at least to the best of our knowledge.
And I wonder also, based on what I said last week, what Tommy knows and what blanks he'll be able to fill in.
And so I do think a lot of this is going to be a puzzle for Ellie now about why did they just so viciously murder him?
And what am I?
Yeah.
Is it possible that really?
Because remember when he was like, there was a bunch of people there that all had your exact same kind of blood last season?
And he says, everybody had your blood.
They were doing all these trials and then they figured out, none of you guys would work.
But none of that was true.
Nobody else has her blood and she's the only one.
so now is she going to go on a martyr tour you know like is she going to try to just so many questions yeah yeah and i mean
that's the thing i think that's the fun aspect of something like this is it doesn't just leave you shocked
and enraged it also then gets your brain whirring and turning and yeah like what if it's because
we started off the season again checking in with that crucial last moment and that look they
share on the hillside like clearly it seems to me at least that yeah so much of the past five years
has been flavored by this deception and this like hurt trust between them and so like
i can imagine it being a very fascinating thing to keep joel's presence around by interrogating him
through how ellie and abby both see him or something like that because they've got to cross
paths again and obviously Ellie you know she's just made the same promise to Abby that Abby made
to Joel so you know that I think there's a lot of interesting stuff that you can get from the two
of them colliding and the fact that you know yeah how you know Ellie is very much her own person and
you know is very much of her own mindset and so part of me is like I can imagine either scenario
equally more so the scenario where she kills her I guess
But at the same time, I could almost imagine her with the right context pivoting off of that to something else.
I don't know what that's something else would be.
And I don't know if I'm not saying it's like they're going to team up or something.
But like, I don't know.
Like it seems like, yeah, that tension of, okay, revenge mission is going to fuel a lot of the action.
But I also feel like they will likely take the opportunity to have like a real debate.
Make use this for the dramatic debate of everything.
and to, again, if all of us viewers are patient and willing to take us on a ride to, yeah,
sort of see if somebody who at the moment is so hateable, you know, could be redeemed.
Because again, it's like, yeah, it's in that moment and when you're, you know, sort of at the
receiving end of her, you know, hurt and ire, it's easy to be in Joel's perspective,
but they do draw, again, a motivation and the kind of character, it's like how many times
have you seen something where the protagonist,
the other person on their squad is like,
I don't know, man, I think you're a little too far down the rabbit hole.
Totally so many times.
So, yeah, it's like it's,
it's so clearly kind of able to function
in both, uh,
uh, perspectives.
But also our perspective of it,
which is like, when she,
when Abby says to Joel,
I heard you couldn't even look at him when you shot him about her dad,
about the doctor.
Yeah.
And the juxtaposition of that with her,
beating him slowly.
Like you guys are two different kind of killers.
Yeah.
Well, yeah, because I was like,
I don't care who you are.
I just need to save Ellie.
And this is like,
you are the one,
you know,
yeah,
you are the direct target
of all of my hurt in English.
Right.
And if it wasn't for all of her friends,
I think she would have killed Dina
and I think she would have killed Ellie.
I don't even think she cared anymore
because they were like,
no,
we don't hurt them.
But without them,
I think she would have killed all of them.
and I mean she did ultimately break her rule
she's like we have this rule
I'm not gonna follow it
yeah right well she's like I am
you know I'm not gonna kill you yeah
because you can't defend yourself
and then you know she she died
I get it you know the situation's changed
they gotta get out of there but at the same time
if you want to argue semantically about it
she did ultimately kill somebody
who wasn't able to defend themselves at the time
uh Jesse is my dude
love Jesse yeah me too
and I really and this was true
Tommy too yeah Tommy
and I'm going to call her Tara forever.
What is his wife's character's name?
Maria?
Is it?
I don't know.
I'll get it locked down by last time because I love their by next time because the two of
their...
Is it Maria?
It might be.
Just call it from her Maria for now.
The two of their relationship is really lovely and I liked how much...
It's not any of the names on the screen, is it?
Not the usual.
But apparently they got a mother-daughter team to play Vanessa and Vanessa's mother.
So there's that.
Yeah, I really like their...
just quality as both individual and, you know, a pair, a couple,
and just the way that they're trading these looks across the, you know, carnage as the, you know,
I don't need, it's not a raid, but, you know, as all the infected are breaking through.
It's kind of a raid.
Yeah, that, that, as they're, you know, raiding for fresh meat.
Yeah, like, I liked the tension of that.
And certainly, again, it's very pointed that they're trying to be like,
was Maria going to die?
Is Tommy going to die?
You know, like, and I think this is a smart episode in that, like, again, I think any zombie show like this, walking dead was certainly a victim of this. People were like, where's my zombie action? So this gives you one half that's very physical, very sort of primal. Just we got to survive. We got to shoot and burn. And then the other side, which is like the exact opposite kind of tension, which is just like close quarters, you know, a couple people and just a situation that's reaching a boiling point, you know. And so like, you know, smart and momentous.
and you know like a big crescendo
like all the little things I think are great
and they have been since the first season
it's just like the way they throw away certain lines
the way they make it feel lived in
especially those early moments between Jesse and Ellie
or moments between Tommy and Maria
or other characters like they're really good
at making it feel lived in
and having a certain amount of endearing personality
along with you know
just the coolness of the world
and the situation and stuff like that
Remind me why you call Maria Tara?
She's on True Blood in her name's Tara.
Not our Tara.
That's the main place I see.
Because they do look so much alike.
Yeah.
No, no, no.
It's a spitting image.
But yeah.
Because I, you know, I'm sure she's done other stuff.
But, but yeah, like it's another HBO.
Yeah, yeah, of course.
Yeah, you told me last week I just forgot.
And I was looking at Tara was like, hmm.
Yeah, true blood.
I came into this being pretty good mood.
And I'm depressed A.F.
I'm sad.
This, like, took the wind out of my.
my freaking sales.
I can't believe it.
This is the least talkative you've ever been.
I just can't.
I'm in shock.
I literally am just like, I just, I'm listening to what you guys are saying,
just going, F this, I can't believe this, F this.
I can't believe this, F this, I can't believe it.
Like, I'm going to have to turn on the TV and Joel's legit dead.
I can't be doing that.
Well, you know, maybe they'll weaken of Bernie's him.
Just like carry him around.
I honestly am okay with that.
Like, anything to keep around.
I agree.
Like, I would be okay.
even with them retconning it next episode.
Like, JK.
Rewart time.
Anything to keep him here.
Like anything.
Yeah, I know.
Like he breaks through the bag and is like,
and I'm like, thank you.
I don't care.
I don't care.
I don't care.
Like, even if it's the worst writing ever.
And it's like,
that doesn't make sense.
I'll give enough.
He's a lot.
Yeah, I'm with you.
No joke.
I feel right now.
My prediction for the next episode would be that it,
I bet they'll start on like a funeral.
pire just to really let us know
that he's actually did
because the one last bit of saving grace is like
well we cut to credits you never know it waits
next week like I have a feeling they're going to start off
with either Tommy
and Maria finding out or some
yeah some way to remind us like
this is savage this is the worst
Passover present ever
no maybe that's it yeah maybe Joel
will rise again in three days.
Easter this is this is the worst
Passover Easter present
I've ever seen ever
Yeah, if Joel's going to rise from the dead,
you're weak off game.
He better.
All right.
Well, and I guess that's the other thing is I guess I'm curious, yeah, to your question before,
how they will, if they will use that five-year gap as an excuse to have him appear more.
I'm okay with that.
Do what you do.
And I guess that will be kind of one of the big question marks now,
because from what I remember again, I haven't played the games yet.
You know, our hope is that once the show's done, we can do some kind of fun way
of actually walking through the games and filling in the rest of the context and experience.
But one thing I remember hearing people say about the first season, which was very well liked,
very well loved, was that, you know, the choice on how to pace certain events from the game
maybe could have been better. Certain things last longer in the game or you get to live in a little
more in the game. Certain characters you meet are a little more impactful or whatever.
And so part of me is a little taken aback at that five-year time gap, even though, I mean, I guess,
just watching them hang out for five years is like nice and pleasant but you know not necessarily
what is like the priority of the drama here um and obviously if they handle the pacing of this in
the present and solely the present really well then that can speak for itself but it does make
me wonder again on the heels of that particular gripe for season one if we will get any sort of
a look back on the recent past i don't know exactly what revelations you could get out of it because
I feel like part of their relationship up until now has been predicated on the fact that they're not communicating.
Right.
There aren't many big revelations.
But yeah, like that that's the one kind of curiosity I have at the moment is sort of like, oh, how is this going to feel in totality?
Because again, I feel like it's dramatically sound to make this death feel sudden and like a rug has been swept out from under you and do it in a way that, yeah, is audacious.
It's going to make people mad and it's going to make people feel bleak and upset.
Yeah. And like now it's about kind of earning that to the point where you can look back and go, damn, I didn't like that choice. But, you know, that was the choice for the story.
Yeah. I'm hoping I feel that way. But speaking of totality, I forgot to tell you guys, Greg told me that this show is set to be four seasons. And that the second game is the three, is season two, three and four.
Jesus Christ. I didn't double check it because I'm not looking up anything. But that is what he said to me.
Because now I'm like, is the second game considerably longer or or are they right?
Maybe he's wrong, but that's what he claimed.
Well, I have at least heard and a while ago in the lead up to this.
But yeah, that it would at least, it would at least be three odd or maybe even beyond three seasons and
that they weren't going to go beyond the games and make it.
You know, there's all sorts of debate about like, will they make Last of Us Three?
And naughty dog, the developer has, has sort of said multiple times like, don't expect that necessarily.
Like if we have the exact perfect story we want to tell, we'll do it.
But right now, it's not at that point.
His name is Noddy Doc.
The company.
Neil Druckman is the main, like, the guy credited.
Oh, you a naughty dog.
But yeah, naughty dog.
See what you did to Tara?
You naughty dog.
Not a dog.
You, not a dog.
You ruined me.
But yeah, because hearing that, yeah, I started to think to myself like, man,
they're going to make like three odd seasons out of this second game then.
and I again remember people
sort of lamenting that the first season
maybe wasn't a bit longer
so part of me wonders if they're
in light of the first season
kind of looking at the response and
readjusting how they do the adaptation
or maybe part of the first season
we go back and see things that
we missed could be yeah
could be that too I'm like is yeah it's either
like the second game is like so much longer
that it just lends itself to way more
TV or they're sort of tweaking
the way that they're doing this or yeah they're going to add
more first season stuff. I don't know. But I am fascinated to find out. Do we have any other
remaining thoughts before we go fall face down and cry? All right. Well, gang, leave us your
thoughts to catch eventually. And, uh, you know, sorry. Go hug someone you love. Go treat yourself
to something nice. Maybe go like, find a friend who has a puppy and just pet him for an hour straight.
We'll catch you on the next one. And, uh, thanks for suffering with us.
Oh, damn it.
Cheers.
