I bet I'd say, did I shart?
You sharded?
I think I ston cold shat myself.
Do you want to start with what your thoughts are?
Would you like me?
Sure, I'll start.
I thought it was great.
I thought it was a lot of fun.
It's very different from every other Alam Sandler movie.
I've seen both in my personal life and on the channel here.
I thought this movie had a lot of heart, yet it was really funny, but the comedy didn't
take away from the stakes of what the characters were fighting for.
I think this movie had a lot of
really strong characters in it
like maybe didn't have
this reservoir of depth
and character exploration
but the fact that we had these distinct characters
that were here rooting for
made it that much more enjoyable
because I feel like everybody
who was part of this team was very memorable
I think this is a very grounded performance
for Adam Sandler
even though he was the star
in the lead of this comedy
it wasn't like a slapstick goofy comedy
even though there was like
goofy or exaggerated elements to it
it still all really worked. I think the
music worked really well. It was very
well placed in time. It was tonally appropriate
and yes. Also
Chris Rock was great. This movie had
a lot of heart which I did not expect going
into. Yeah, no, I mean it's usually
with an Adam, I thought there was
going to be a scene. Usually with an Adam Sandler
film, you know, you expect like
outlandish crazy, you know,
silly moments. Which again,
there were a few here and there. But again,
I wasn't expecting so much
so much heart and i wasn't expecting you know that whole family dynamic and element in it and then
also too i wasn't expecting uh what happened with uh chris chris rach's character added a lot of stakes
and um also got me really sad as well so i wasn't expecting you know to cry in this movie
that was the last thing i was expecting was big boy uh it was the last thing i was expecting um in
this film and there were times like i said there was a good three scenes where uh i i felt
it was suspenseful you had that one scene where you had that one scene where
they were trying to provoke Nelly with the guards.
You had that scene with Chris Rock with the bomb.
I mean, I didn't know what was going to happen.
And then you also had the scene with the sniper there at the end.
So, you know, in the film with a lot of comedic elements in it,
I thought that the tone really balanced with the suspense full,
which, again, very surprising that they did it.
And I did feel it was interesting, too, with Adam Sandler's character.
I thought he had a pretty nice arc in this film
because I wasn't sure what to make of the whole point shaving thing.
And now when you understand the scope of the film and we get to the end where his character starts out when he's living with Courtney Cox.
Although, again, I would have been happy.
But I understand the prison he felt he was in.
He got himself in that situation.
Again, I don't know the specifics in terms of with bookies or whoever he got into it with.
And then he was in a situation where it was his life on the line and he had to shave points.
And then he lost everything as a result.
and that's why he was now in his own hell.
And he was in a prison internally.
And I like the idea that he had to go to prison to find himself again.
And he did that with this group and got it through camaraderie.
And I like that the guys like brought that out in him.
They all elevated each other through the development of their relationships.
And when put in the situation again, I think there was something beautiful and poetic about it.
when the warden put him in a really tough situation,
hey, if you win this game,
you're going to be 25 more years at least
for what happened to caretaker.
Again, a very similar situation to what had happened.
Well, not similar, but similar in terms of you're going to lose your life
in the first time with the point shaving.
But again, because of what he had grown to,
you know, how he had found himself now,
and he had found himself and really grown a family with this crew,
he's like, screw it, screw the warden.
I don't care.
I know I'm not guilty.
that I can live it sucks that I'm going to have to be here for 25 years but I was lonely out there and
I had nothing and I can at least live with the fact that I didn't do anything even if it's BS that
I have to be in here but at least I have these guys to be with me and if that if that's what it is
it is there's nothing I can do about it yeah he found a sense of family which was really nice I
feel like the fact that we're still able to garner who these characters are despite of the fact
that we know little information about them it's not about what they've done it's about
who they are and where they are now it's about the the sense of family sense of
camaraderie for sure and coming together this is like a true underdog story yeah
and yeah it balances that hard-of-being underdog story with it having these goofier moments and
these these real moments as well and I'm surprised that this movie didn't get a sequel also has like
it's very has like a lot of quotes I've kind of grown up hearing like the uh baby back bitch
I haven't heard most of these
And you broke a damn
My nose
I haven't heard most of these
Oh yeah
I kind of grew up
Cultural Osmosis for me
But yeah it was
It was a really
Fun film
It was fun
It was funny
It had a lot of heart
And it really got you behind
These guys
And their motivation
For one to take down
These guards
Yeah
Yeah I think that
I understand why this is like
A modern classic
Yeah for sure
It hits all the marks
This also makes me really want to go back and watch the original with Bert Rounds just to see like the different differentiate the tones.
I'm going to see if it's the original guy.
If that's the same character.
Oh, you mean if he plays the same character?
Bert Reynolds?
Yeah.
Yeah, go for it.
But yeah, I'm curious.
I do have to mention that I think the film does a great show.
We talked about it a little bit during the reaction, Aaron.
I think the film does a great job because me being a sports person, I never played football, nor do I watch too much NFL.
I'm more of an MLB NBA guy.
I take it very seriously, though, when I, with choreography and sports,
and I really thought this film did a great job of wide, long shots,
really nailing the football choreography.
They did a great job.
Like, I really felt like I was watching it.
I don't know if you'd say an NFL game because you got convicts versus guards,
but I really thought I was watching a football game.
So I thought, you know, from that perspective,
I want to give props where props are due.
Yeah.
I thought they really nailed that.
Yeah, it was shot really well.
And I love a lot of the inventive play.
I mean, there were obviously real football plays that they came up with, you know,
the fumble or the fakerouski, whatever the plays were and all the other plays.
But there were also some really inventive and cool other plays.
And obviously they added some fun schlocky stuff in there too.
And it was so cool that they got so many wrestlers and all the cameos,
Dan Patrick, Jim Rohn, Chris Berman, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Kevin Nash,
big boy all the rest of Bill Goldberg
I mean I got so many people in this movie
It was awesome
Hell of cameos
Yeah I mean not
Not too many of Adam Sandler's
I mean you had like Alan Covert
And then you also had Rob Schneider
There at the end for their little cameos
Yeah and Chris Rock's part of that crew too
Yeah yeah I would have honestly
And again I'm not I'm not
It's not like a negative
I would have loved a couple more scenes
With Adam Sandler and Chris Rock
And I get it people are like
we'll go watch the Shoshnik Redemption because that film is longer and focuses more
in the relationship between Andy and Red.
Yeah, but you wanted it for this movie.
Yeah, but for this movie, I understand why they didn't like go way more into it.
But just with what ended up happening, I still like gave a damn.
I was emotionally invested and there was a lot of depth there.
But I just, I love their chemistry together and I love their interactions.
I wouldn't mind maybe even a few more scenes with those two to even develop that relationship
even more.
The only reason I say that is because a lot of their scenes had the whole.
group around them and I would have liked even a few more scenes just the two of them only.
Yeah, is what I'm saying, just to develop the, the unity and bond that those two struck
together. But I still felt, again, I was crying when that happened because I actually was invested
in caretaker. So, yeah, no, I, again, I just, I just thought I was just only going to laugh when
I came into this film. I wasn't expecting too much. But I really, really enjoyed it. I'm not going to
lie. I was a diehard Adam Sandler fan from Billy Madison all the way to about 50 first dates. And I did
watch Click, which came out a year after this movie. I love that. I think that's a very underrated
film. I think the reason that film didn't go well into a lot of people's, I know a lot of people
do like it, but I think maybe with critics is because that was sold as, you know, straight up a comedy
where it's not, I mean, there's funny moments in it, but it's not a comedy. But my point that I'm making
is once we got past like that click era there's a lot of films in there i just kind of
stayed a pass where it's the directed DVD i just haven't not checked them out um i haven't heard
great things but maybe i need to i don't know but this film really surprised me i loved it a lot
um do you have anything else to add for i check on the trivia uh burnt reynolds did not play
the same character he actually played adam samler's character in the original oh cool same name
pa paul crew okay interesting i figured you
he played the same, but good to know.
So the longest yard,
anything else you want to head for you getting to
this? No, this was a really fun movie.
And Courtney Cox is really hot.
In case he didn't hear it the other 500 times.
Bert Reynolds was supposed to have a stunt double
for when he got hit by Brian Bosworth on a touchdown run,
but Reynolds insisted on doing it himself, saying,
and I quote,
I got one run left in me, end quote.
Bosworth himself was honored by the whole situation saying,
who else can say they got run over by bert reynolds reynolds went through the hit in one take with
no injuries though he had to be helped off the field the shots used in the movie of him being helped
off the field were not staged wow i don't also yeah he did pass in 2018 at eight
eight to eighty two man michael poppa john who as mentioned earlier during the review which i'm
sure there were comments stop mentioning shit that's not involved in this movie but i'm going to it's
just who i am sorry guys uh who was in spider man and
at The Amazing Spider-Man and many other films.
Michael Papa John was Adam Sandler's stuntman in The Waterboy,
making the hard hits as Bobby Boucher.
Oh, that's cool.
I didn't know that was Michael.
Oh, Papa John.
In this movie, things came full circle as Michael has his own stuntman.
Love it.
Very cool.
Now I'm going to read, whenever I watch the Waterboy,
now I will know that most of the time when Bobby's making the hits,
it's Michael Papa John.
So cool.
I never knew that.
Thank you.
Bert Reynolds wears number 22 as coach Nate Scarborough.
This is the same number he wore in the original film
as quarterback Paul Crewe.
Nice.
That makes sense.
The picture that Chris Rock shows to Paul
is a real picture of his mother in him.
His mother had the photo in the book
she wrote called Mama Rock's Rules.
Oh.
I love that.
You're going to be shocked by this one.
The film includes several W.W.E. superstars.
The Great Khali.
Stone Cold Steve Austin.
Kevin Nash and Bill Goldberg.
It also includes professional football players,
Michael Irvin, Terry Cruz,
Bill Romanowski, and Brian Bosworth,
plus singer and rapper Nelly.
Bill Goldberg and Stone Cole, Steve Austin,
were also football players for they were wrestlers.
This was such an all-star pack cast.
I mean, with normal actors and then just, you know,
just superstars football players just packed.
The movie was filmed in a closed-down part
of the New Mexico State Penitentiary.
called Old Main.
It was the part of the prison where one of the worst prison riots in U.S. history occurred
on February 2nd, 1980.
The state offered the building for rent for film purposes.
Wow, that's cool.
Interesting facts.
Bert Reynolds and Ed Lottner.
That was the, Ed Lottner was the guy when the warden was playing the golf game.
He's one of the guys on the left.
And Ed Lottner are the only two actors from the original film to appear in this remake.
Oh, cool.
While he was on the set, Chris Berman was asked if he could come up with the unique nicknames for the movie starts since he was known for doing so with the NFL players during highlights on ESPN.
Berman came up with Adam Love Letters in the Sandler, Chris, like A Rock, and Woe Nelly.
Woe Nellie was a signature call of college football broadcaster Keith Jackson.
When asked to do Burt Reynolds, Berman promptly refused saying, I can't do one for Burt Reynolds.
He's Bert Reynolds.
That's fine. That's great.
Didn't want to piss him off in case he didn't like it.
Let's see.
Stone Cold Steve Austin tore his hamstring while training for the football scenes.
Oof.
Ouch.
Michael Irvin played a practical joke on Bill Ramanowski while filming a scene in the locker room.
Irvin replaced the fake collapsible locker door that Romanowski head butts with a real solid lock door.
This can be seen as an outtake on the DVD.
Oh my God.
So if he, can you imagine like him as an actor?
Oh, this, this is not solid.
This is like a, you know, one of those, what did we just say?
One of the, a fake collapsible one.
So then he head butts as hard as he can.
Like, holy shit.
Oh my God.
I mean, he's got a head like a brick probably, but still that must have hurt like crazy.
Give yourself a concussion.
This film is the second highest grossing sports comedy of all time.
Really?
What's first?
Do you want to take a guess?
Sports comedy, huh?
did it come up before it or after it before
well obviously
um
is it
I don't is Adam Sandler on that one too
yes
is it is it Billy Madison
Billy Madison's not a sports comedy
happy go marks that's what I'm at yeah
the water boy
ah
get those two mixed up
yeah and I feel you
do a couple more
Ed Lottner was cast
after he happened to come across the set
during filming Adam Sandler met with him and quickly
had a part written for him. That was nice if Adam
to do. Let's just do a couple
spoilers. Oh my God, there's so many
regular trivia. I have to go way
down. Wee.
Michael Irvin's character named
Deacon Moss is a reference to former NFL
football players, Deacon Jones, and Randy
Moss. Nice. Makes sense.
Shortly before Caretaker's funeral,
Unger is talking to the guards and it seems likely
he called the guard boss. However,
if you listen closely, he actually says
boss. The guard, he is talking to
two was played by Brian
the boss bossworth
hmm that makes sense
warden hazens golfing buddy
dwayne is played by ed latner
that's who played captain canaure
and bert reynolds Nate Scarborough
played paul crew in the original
we already mentioned that I'll just do one
more let me just see which one's more interesting
oh Courtney Cox played
Adam Sandler's girlfriend in bedtime stories
I did see that movie I just totally forgot she was in that
it's been a long time I saw that when I worked
at Hollywood video last one
after Paul Crewe, Adam Sandler,
comes back in after having betrayed his teammates.
The O-line doesn't block the guards on the second sack.
Guard Lambert, Bill Romanowski,
spits on crew as he's getting off of them.
In real life, Romanoxie, an NFL linebacker
with the San Francisco 49ers, Philadelphia, Eagles,
Denver Broncos, and Oakland Raiders from 1988.
The Euro was born to 2003.
At the time, a Bronco spit in the face of 49ers,
wide receiver, JJ Stokes.
Cool.
Cool.
All right. Well, guys, like I said, this film was a lot more emotional and heavy-handed. And it was funny as hell. But again, a lot more emotional and heavy than I was expecting. I really enjoyed it. It's probably one of my favorite Adam Sandler films, which is saying a lot because I have a lot of Am Sandler films that I adore and love. Could be recency bias. I don't know, but I really enjoyed it. It was a lot more than I was expecting. Yeah, it was a great film. Aaron, any final thoughts where we end this?
No, it was great. I loved it.
Guys, let us know in the comments.
What did you think of the longest yard?
Is it one of your favorite Adam Sandler films?
We'd love to hear your thoughts if you've made it this far.
Thank you so much. We appreciate it.
Just, yeah, we'll see you guys on the next one.
Take care.
