Aaron Alexander & Tara Erickson dive into the groundbreaking 1999 sci-fi/action classic The Matrix starring Keanu Reeves (John Wick) as Neo/Thomas Anderson, Laurence Fishburne as Morpheus, Carrie‑Anne Moss as Trinity, Hugo Weaving as Agent Smith, and Joe Pantoliano as Cypher—directed by the Wachowski Sisters (then Wachowski Brothers). We break down the most famous scenes: the red-pill vs blue-pill choice, the rooftop gun-battle, the lobby shoot-out, the bullet-time slow-mo, Neo’s “I know kung fu” dojo fight, “There is no spoon” moment and the epic Neo vs Smith final showdown. We quote legendary lines like “You take the red pill—you stay in Wonderland…” and “The Matrix is a system, Neo” and explore how the film changed action cinema forever. Plus, we put it all in context within the full Matrix franchise: The Matrix (1999), The Matrix Reloaded (2003), The Animatrix (2003), The Matrix Revolutions (2003), and The Matrix Resurrections (2021) Whether you’re searching “The Matrix explained”, “Neo fight scenes breakdown”, “Matrix famous quotes”, or “Matrix movie reaction”, this video delivers a full commentary and analysis of what makes this film iconic—and what it means for the sequels. Let's get into the Matrix.
Nice.
That's fucking cool.
I really got to pee.
Yeah, do you think, Jake Wayne?
Okay, guys, we just finished watching the mother freaking Matrix.
It was really dope, really awesome.

We got questions
and comments galore.
I am excited to see what we have
I think we're on the search.
We are on the search.
All right.
First one is from Awesome Joe.
Hello, everyone.
My question for you is Keanu Reeves.
Great with this role or would you have preferred Will Smith for the part since he was the one chosen for the part first, but turned down to do Wild Wild West instead.
That's right.
That's right.
I don't know that.
Yeah.
It's supposed to be somebody else for neat because if they're going to make Neo Will Smith, they're going to cast a white,
dude for Morpheus.
But because he dropped out,
they switched it.
Really?
Yeah.
Okay.
I don't know.
Because I don't see it.
I think it'd be a very different movie if it was the case.
I'm not mad at the idea,
but I feel like it would change the tone because I feel like
Keanu Reeves' dryness goes with the tone of what this is.
There's like a sleekness to this.
There's a dryness, a coldness, a coolness.
And I feel like Will Smith's coolness.
is more boisterous, more loud,
whereas Keanu's is more subdued,
and I feel like that subdued energy
was more in tone with the sleekness of the film.
Yeah, and then besides,
we never would have gotten guns, lots of guns.
Why?
Because, no, I'm saying,
it's a John Wick, like, thing.
So you know, you know, but they got it from here.
That's when everybody, when he says the line is like,
whoo, this is like following Keanu Reeves around.
which I love um yeah I don't I don't I don't see it I think Will Smith is like he's he's a great actor
he's fun I'm not saying that he can't do like dramatic parts he definitely can I just I don't
see him doing all of the stunts and the choreography as well as Keanu Reeves I don't know I mean
I think it probably still would have been a good movie but definitely very different I'm glad that
it was Keanu he just has weird sensibilities as an actor that you would think what why would
you say it like that what is he doing and it just it works though so yeah i loved it okay
uh monica hilder brand cipher chose to return to the simulation because it offered more
a comfortable life than that of the real world which would you choose if it's realities
or anything that would tempt you to reenter the simulation i knew this question was going to come
because of course it's like the big question on the movie that's tough it doesn't seem fun it doesn't
seem like a good life the one the one they live in 21 99 so I'd probably take the blue fill
I like I like life yeah a little too steak you need one sauce you know the little things of life
walking not eating goop or being because they're also cold all the time yeah suck
It just seems like, yeah.
I think sometimes I'm like Parker Posey in White Lotus where she says,
I think I'm just not meant to live an uncomfortable life.
Like that you get older, like, which is so funny to me.
That's like the best line, best meme from that show, which that's how I feel right now
where I'm like, gave me the blue pill.
I'll wake up in my bed.
Yeah.
I like my comfy bed.
I like the pleasures of good food.
But it's funny watching it from this perspective, though, because they know everyone's not technically real.
They're farmed for energy, but they give their consciousness, like, I guess, some semblance of something to do.
So put them in the matrix.
But because they view it that way, they're just murdering everybody left and right.
So the people that aren't aware, they're just thinking like, oh, these guys are crazy.
They're like experiencing psychosis.
but to the people that are on the other side that know that this isn't real,
they're just like, ah, it doesn't matter anyway.
This isn't where the real fight is, which is kind of wild.
And I definitely can see, and I don't know how many people in real life are inspired by this movie.
But I can definitely see it inspiring some, like, psychosis and some people,
especially with how big of a cultural juggernaut this thing was.
You mean of them thinking like, oh, my God, is it the matrix?
Like, our world is fake.
So they go out and do stuff with that belief.
Right. Right. Interesting.
Yeah.
I would not be one of those people.
Oh, no. Not me.
But, you know, it's, I think it's very original, and I'm happy this movie exists.
Yeah. Okay.
Flying Scotsman, 472.
If you were Keanu in this movie and someone came up to you in a car and said, hey, I have a blue pill and red pill.
Do you want to go down the rabbit hole?
Would you take the pills? I'd be tempted, but I don't think I'd do it.
I feel like we just sort of answered that one.
Blue pill baby.
Blue pill for sure
Gabriel said
Would you want to know
If there was a simulation
Or would you prefer to be unaware
Blue pill baby
Frickin
Bullittsfully
Unnowware
For sure
I just don't
When you're like
Oh I know it's real
And now I'm here and it's real
But it sucks
You're like
Yeah let's just take it back
To where it was like cool
I'm fine with that
You know
I want to live
I don't want to be cold and having to fend off big squids all the time
and have like a cord in the back of my neck and drink throw up.
I'm good.
Ew.
Drink throw off.
Reject Nation, you know those nights when you're starving.
The fridge is empty.
And you absolutely don't want to cook or leave the house.
Or heck, you might even be at an office and you got a limited lunch hour.
You don't want to spend any of that time driving on the road.
Because time is precious.
It's a situation.

Maurice Gray Jr. Were you
at any point confused? They went back and forth
between reality and the Matrix. I wondered
which it was a few
times. I think I felt
like it was pretty clear
of like when they were back and forth, especially
like when you know when they got
hooked up and stuff. Because yeah, this
movie clearly establishes the three
realities. There's the future. There's
the matrix and there's like the loading
area. And I feel like they
make a pretty good distinction
on which is which over the course of the movie.
Yeah, I think so too. I actually
wasn't you confused.
Which is a plus. Yeah. I feel
like they found a way to make these
high-sife concepts
really palatable and really accessible,
which is a great strength of the movie.
Yeah. It was really great.
I agree. Jay Rushden,
there were two black cats. Maybe Tara
is still an matrix question. Do you ever get
viruses on your computer?
I might still be the makers
because I do have two black kitties
and they're the best
I don't because I have a Mac
and they don't tend to get viruses
but maybe on PCs I think back
in the day probably but no
yeah no shy do you
no viruses maybe on my phone
but not on my computers
I know computers he said
Jackson Ryan when this movie's
released he was 19
they were changing as a society with the integration
of technology. The older I get, I look
at this movie and two other films is a cautionary
tale. Being Gen X were the
generation one foot in the world before tech
exploded and the other foot in today's
dependency on tech.
We're increasing technology advancement while
disconnecting from human connection. We're allowing
corporate greed and control while making corporations
more and more in control of our lives.
I feel like this movie was already speaking to the issue
before it even became a thing.
Neo being the one is about saying
connected to the one, you
being human, and continuing
to naturally grow and develop the soul
while tech increases around us.
It is our imbalance between
being human and tech that I fear
will be our own worst enemy.
We may not see it now, but the groundwork
seems to be set.
Yeah, I see
what you're saying, dude, and I,
you know, those fears are very valid.
Those fears are very real. We're not quite
to that point yet. We are at a place
where AI is rising and
human attention
is being commodified.
for money, you know, with algorithms,
what you're paying is the price of your attention
because they design it to keep you sedated
as they keep sedated in the Matrix.
And as humans are creating AI
and, you know, we have Chad GPT,
but also they're building robots to, you know,
for advanced tech.
We have Tesla bots, you know?
So it's only a matter of time before AI gets to a point
and it's farmed all the day,
that's people are using while engaging with it and coupling that with the robots and that
and meanwhile we're all sedated for the fact that we have social media and want to watch
our cat videos and want to watch our our memeifications of life but yeah I feel like it's
it is definitely about staying one conscious and two aware of how things are happening around you
so yeah I definitely feel like this movie was ahead of its time
for sure and there are other movies that kind of address this concept but i feel like for this being
made in the 90s it was pretty revolutionary for how it uh saw the potential for things could go
yeah i think the main thing like with this is that human connection gets less and less when
technology advances which is kind of like what you're saying and i mean that's why you see like
art around town where it's it'll just be a person drawn
and they'll just be looking at a phone
like that's what the art is now
trying to call out that that's
what the world is now. Like if we didn't have
that technology, people would
sit and talk to each other more. You're sort of
looking around. You spike up
a conversation with someone. You build
more of a human connection
versus like a connection with a robot,
a connection with chatty. Let's be
honest. I mean,
a connection with Instagram and
TikTok and a screen, which is
like it's, it happens
so quickly and we become so reliant on it so fast that it's hard to like really see it until
you're there to be like, well, the outcome of this could be messy if it continues to be more
and more. But then when you think about it, you think like, well, back in the day, they didn't even
have a lot of technology, but then they got electricity. Then they got a washing machine, right? Then
they got a dishwasher, it's like
tech, tech, tech, tech versus
I watch a show of like
how to keep you younger. There's people who are
in like third world countries
and they're healthier and live
longer because they still have to do all
these things because they have to clean their clothes so
they're burning calories, right?
They have to cook all their own food
so they're eating better.
Like it's like the struggle between
the two, it's weird.
It's weird. Except
we're, yeah, we're kind of
like we're feeding the beast
because we're in America.
Capitalism exists. It is what it
is. Hopefully, you know,
we won't be here when the AI
robots take over.
Liam Harold, are you the one
Aaron? The Matrix has, finally
has you. Tell him.
I am. I do feel one.
I do feel awake and I am
the better for having experienced this movie
and I know
what they're trying to do. I see
it. Thank you for acknowledging that.
the sight is there.
Resident Z says she's actually
taking a couple of college classes that
have this movie as required viewing.
One of which was philosophy.
Here's a bit of a curbaal for the question.
What do you feel's most disturbing thing, whether
shown or told in the movie? For me, it has to be
the shutting of Neo's mouth.
Yeah, that was, I hated that.
That was pretty gross. Yeah, that was gnarly.
Honestly, the most disturbing thing for me was
it was cool in the moment, but
realizing how everyone else is perceiving this moment that's not of the knowledge of what's happening
was when they first show up to the building to save Morpheus and they're just gunning down everybody
I'm like oh my god these are just security guys doing their job and they're none the wiser that what is
actually happening but I was like dang that's crazy it's like a mass shooting for real
they're just little AI robots but they're exactly the AI robot well no because you would see like
the homeless guy right
or you see, like, the old lady to her apartment.
They access through the main friend.
Yeah, they're NPCs, essentially.
Right.
Everyone's an NPC who's not aware.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
So, you know, they're...
I know what you mean.
You're like, these four guys, like, they don't know.
But they're, yeah, they're definitely being...
I mean, they're like, they're in, like, a baby tube somewhere in the actual world.
But this is their reality for all intents of purposes.
It sucks.
It is suck.
It does freaking suck.
But, yeah, I think that was the part.
I was like, oh, my God.
That was when I had the thought, like, oh,
if anyone wasn't aware of what's actually happening,
they would think these people were, like, having a psychotic break.
Yeah, I agree with that.
I thought the bug and the belly button and then it being pulled out totally disturbing.
Didn't like it.
Didn't want it.
Also, the gooey when he's rebirthed got me.
That was freaky as hell, dude.
The fucking throw up they got to eat.
I don't want it.
I don't want it.
I feel like I could go on.
I won't.
Tim Porkroll says,
Perhaps without the context of the movie, I'm sure you've seen some references to The Matrix and other movies and shows.
Do you have a favorite that you can think of?
And how do you feel about the last impact the movie has had on popular culture?
Oh, definitely.
There's definitely been a lot of things I've seen in other movies.
Hell, I even reference a couple in this reaction.
Like the fact that the shot from Spider-Man won where he's first learning to web swing,
he literally is like the same shot at him on the top of the building and running and then him like flailing his arms before he falls.
except it's slightly different how that scene ends but almost shot for shot but also the you know the
obviously the iconic shot with him doing like the the not back flip but like leaning back to how to doze
the bullets seen that parodied a million times the kick and the 3D shot parodied a bunch of times
and even movies doing like the thing with him stopping the bullets you know other movies have taken
that sense this point so yeah it's definitely culturally relevant and it's had a huge impact
on movies even today like 25 years later it's still being referenced a ton so yeah it did a number
for movies and tv shows it did for sure and especially because it was ahead of its time right it's
it's now even closer to the future that we could be looking at in regards to sentient beings and
AI and all that we're not getting like as close to what this movie portrays but you get what
I'm saying um like chatty is some people's best friend so um um
Yeah, and I think my favorite thing is just guns, lots of guns.
It is my favorite thing.
Mary Soul says, it has often been said that the Matrix can be seen as a modern retelling of Plato's cave allegory or the Jesus Savior metaphor or even how Neo's journey echoes Buddhist thought, awakening from illusion into true awareness.
And that all seems to apply, but in your opinion, is Neo a hero because he is the one or is he a hero because others feed his ego with belief?
And only then does he become the one.
What's your perception of the after a fresh viewing experience?
Thank you, Taryn.
Aaron, always lovely to watch with you.
Appreciate the question.
I love this philosophical shit.
It's like my favorite.
That is a good question, though.
Is he the one because he knows he's the one or he's the one because people told him he's the one?
When Oracle told him he wasn't the one, he was like, nah.
I think it was Oracle telling him he wasn't the one.
is what made him the one.
I think so, too.
Because even,
even Morpheus said,
she told you exactly
what you needed to hear.
Yeah.
So,
point of the day,
don't doubt me.
I got this.
I am the one.
No,
it was,
it was really dope,
though.
I think they,
uh,
they did a really good job.
I feel like that's my perception,
you know.
I feel like him coming to the belief
because he was told he wasn't to prove otherwise,
uh,
felt like,
that was the thing yeah what do you think i don't yeah i don't think they fed his ego too much
because he's really only heard it like from trinity and morphius right and then the oracle was like
no you're not and like he even said i'm not the one right like you got to believe me i'm gonna go back
in and save morphius because i'm not the one um i do get we're saying though mary's soul because
he did get enough feedback that was like yeah you are the one but he they really said
holy crap he really is after they saw him like dodging bullets
right after they saw him stop the bullets and then he saw the code and everything exactly wild
okay druid the world has changed so much since 1999 the matrix has been broken down so much
over the years how would you interpret the meaning of the matrix today in a world with AI
defix and simulation theories everywhere love the work you do
hmm I don't interpret the meaning I think it's about awareness I think it's
you know he is somebody who was living this life you know selling tech being a hacker and
his awareness and coming into self is what's going to save the world potentially and yeah this is
this is a this is a one to for sure unpack over time because yeah we literally just finished it
minutes ago but i think that it speaks to that and speaks to the dangers of technology and
how they can eventually, you know, take over and rise up and then have us service them.
Because, yeah, you see that analogy, or he gave towards the beginning of the movie where
he held up the battery saying, like, this is us, this is what we are to them because they were
using the sun and then I think like we bombed things and then they couldn't use the sun and
they found an alternate power source.
So in a way, we were kind of like the arbiters of our own destruction.
which you know it's pretty real um but yeah that's what i'm thinking off of right now but
trust and best believe before you film the second one i will watch a many of video essay and
have a many conversation to a further um collect thoughts but yeah i feel like this is one i for sure
have to chew on a bit and kind of recollect on some drive homes but yeah that's what i'm coming
out of it right now i think it did a really good job of
showcasing that, showcasing a sense of choice, showcasing the dangers of technology.
Yeah. So I'm just remember that it says, you know, the body cannot live without the mind.
And this is a really good, like, it just shows you that like the mind is doing so, so much.
Even when you watch different things and they're like, it's mind over matter because sometimes it really is.
You've got to put your mind to it.
And I think that that, that to me is stuck in here where it's like the body cannot live without the mind.
And I think that if you allow your mind, yes, we're getting AI, deep fakes, simulation theories, all of that.
I think if you are living too deeply in that, then you can get brainwashed.
And then the mind becomes you're in a whole other world.
but hopefully because the mind is strong enough
to realize what's real and what's fake
that you would stay grounded enough to not get too much
into the AI and deep fakes and simulation stuff
which can be a little freaky
so that's that's kind of how I
that's my main lie that I'm remembering
like the body cannot live without the mind
you're like yeah in that in that sense
it's like mind over matter kind of a vibe
okay
Is that all of them?
That is it.
Wow.
Okay, guys.
Thank you for sending in questions.
We really appreciate it.
And, yeah, I'm thoroughly invested.
I'm happy to have finally seen this movie.
I am excited to see where the story goes, how things unfold.
What other lessons are hidden within this allegory for, you know, being connected as humans.
And, yeah, without further ado, or before we get out of here, Tara,
What do you think the Rotten Tomatoes is for this movie?
Let's say Critics, 81, and audience, 89.
Okay.
You were right that it was in the 80s.
Critics, 83, audience is 85.
Ah, okay, that was pretty close.
You were very close.
That was pretty good.
Yeah.
Do you have any final thoughts before we get out of here?
I know.
I love this movie, good times, man.
Good times all around.
Gives you stuff to chew on for the brain.
Oh, yeah.
It gives all kinds of stuff to chew on.
and we're going to keep on chewing as we keep on going.
All right, you guys, love you.
We'll see you guys the next one and stay woke.
