Tara Erickson & Aaron Alexander react to The Matrix Reloaded (2003), the high-octane sci-fi action sequel from visionary filmmakers Lana & Lilly Wachowski (The Matrix, Cloud Atlas, Sense8). The second chapter in the groundbreaking cyberpunk saga pushes the limits of reality, philosophy, and visual effects — expanding the mythology that redefined modern cinema. Keanu Reeves (John Wick, Speed) returns as Neo, the prophesied “One” caught between destiny and doubt as he continues his fight to free humanity from the machine world. Carrie-Anne Moss (Memento, Jessica Jones) reprises her role as the fierce and loyal Trinity, while Laurence Fishburne (John Wick: Chapter 4, Apocalypse Now) commands the screen once again as Morpheus, searching for the elusive Keymaker to unlock humanity’s salvation. The film also features Hugo Weaving (V for Vendetta, Lord of the Rings Trilogy) as the ever-duplicating Agent Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith (Gotham, Set It Off) as Niobe, Monica Bellucci (Spectre, Malèna) as the alluring Persephone, and Lambert Wilson (The Serpent, Cat Run 2) as the enigmatic Merovingian. Iconic and highly searched moments include the epic freeway chase, Neo’s gravity-defying Burly Brawl against hundreds of Agent Smiths, the Zion dance sequence, the Keymaker’s introduction, and the Architect’s mind-bending revelation. Combining philosophical depth with revolutionary visual effects, The Matrix Reloaded stands as one of the most ambitious action sequels ever made — a film that expanded the universe and reshaped the boundaries of sci-fi storytelling. Melissa Taylor
in this film Neo is seemingly
given a choice either to save Trinity
potentially dooming himself or safe
humanity but what sets our Neo apart
from previous versions is how much his power is fueled by the profound love he shares with Trinity.
So, what do you think are the implications of Neo-chusing love over logic?
Would you have made the same choice?
Tara?
I know that the guy is setting it up, where it's like if he chooses love, Zion dies.
All these people die.
but he did make a point in saying of course you're going to make the choice that is beyond all logic like that your mind just can't even comprehend because that's what love is and I feel like because they spent so much time showing us their strong connection and Neo saying plenty of times that he's like I can't like live without you Trinity um
it made sense that he would go back, but my assumption is, is that because, yes, I get it, okay, he's a 6-1, that guy has tried to control it. He's like the anomaly, can't figure it out. But I'm thinking he can save her, but then also save Zion. Like, maybe. That's what I'm thinking. I don't know if I, I assume I would have made the same choice with the hope.
that I could maybe do both.
I don't know.
Yeah, and it's a tough pickle.
It's a tough situation.
Save humanity or save the love of your life.
Because, yeah, I think that, I don't know,
there's an argument about what drives humans, right?
Is it power?
Is it control?
Is it love?
Is it community?
And I feel like that answer very much differs from person to person.
right but I feel like Neo is driven by his love and it feels as though for myself
I'd probably err on the side of Neo as well and protecting the people that I care about
and that I love because yeah I feel like even in that being the defender of the people that you love
can give you a sense of purpose, granted.
Can it be, can you have an more altruistic purpose of saving the many, the needs of the many
away the needs of the few?
That is like the altruistic, heroic choice to make.
But in this movie, we're presented with a almost like Spider-Man 2S choice, you know,
save the card of people or save Mary Jane.
And heroes typically try to find a way to persevere and save both.
And it is a grim possibility.
but I think I would try to do my best to save both
because I felt like if I were to save the masses
but not be able to save the people that I love,
would it promote longevity and, you know, the human species, sure,
but I feel like I would know how to live with myself
if the things that I cared dearly about
weren't able to survive with me.
So I would have to make the same choice as Neo in this situation.
Yeah, and you also have to remember
Melissa, love defies all logic, period.
It just does.
Yeah, we are emotional creatures.
And even when we do have the, you know, the backing of logic, I feel like at the end of the day, we are creatures of it.
And we have to, logic is learned, but feelings are inherent.
And I feel like that's at the end of the day what most people are going to go towards, including myself.
Yeah.
Thanks for the question, Melissa.
resident z
thank you for sending the question dog
hey guys hope you enjoyed the movie
i remember being completely blown away by the freeway scene
when i first saw the movie the coordination must have been insane
not only for the fights but also the driving
was there a scene or visual in the movie that
similarly had you in awe
have a good rest of your day you two
well you have a good rest of your day resident z or resident z
as John likes to say.
Yeah.
I think for me that
that scene with
all the agents
Smiths fighting Neo
had me messed up.
That scene was awesome.
That scene was so cool.
What about you, Tara?
Yeah, I was going to say
where they kept multiplying.
That was pretty wild.
Some of the best fight choreography
that I've seen in a minute.
But then I guess, if not that,
I would go to when he first
meets the
assistant to the Oracle where he's just sitting there and they have just like a one-on-one
fight because he needs to test him to make sure that he's the one. That was really cool. I think
most of this in hearing you be like the coordination must have been insane. I think the coordination
was insane for pretty much every single scene except the times when they were just trying to give us
a foundation for the plot, meaning them they're just like talking, which was rare. Most of it was
like action, which is wild.
yeah yeah i think a minor criticism i have like some of the action scenes went on a little too long
but i think that the effort and and impressive coordination of said action
yeah still made it entertaining but i was like oh this feels like actions for action's sake
rather than action for progressing the plot yeah might get you but you know still enjoyable
overall just a you know minor critique but um yeah thanks for sending the question residency
awesome Joe awesome in all caps thank you for sending in a question man do you believe when movies break stories into two parts into two part films is it because the studio is cash grabbing or do they actually have a story they are trying to tell but it takes more than one movie to make it happen either way for me it works because the matrix trilogy is one of my favorite trilogies
I think it depends
It really does depend
both on
the type of story that it is
and the intentionality
because some stories
could be one thing
but like there's other examples
like it's been a minute of something
in the Harry Potter movies and they like took that book
and divided it into two
and you watched them more recently
do you feel like that movie could
have been one and you feel like it justified being two movies
there's more than two movies there's like seven
I'm talking about like the last book
because they divided deadly parlous part one
deadly harliss part two I see what you're saying
I was like
no I know there's a lot of books
I think there's just so much information
that they had to you just had to
if you wanted to
feed the audience if there's
people who read the book you want to feed
them with as much
somewhat as much detail as you can
because of that audience. There's other movies
obviously that we've seen that have sequels that are just for
cash grabs that are absolute shite.
That's where it's like not good.
Where it like ruined. You're like, why you've even got to mess with that?
And I can't think of an example right now. But yes, that happens.
I don't think that's happening here
with the Matrix because we found out at the end of this movie
that he is number six. And that was a wild fact.
and they're ending on taking us back back to like the beginning when we see him, you know, on the table of like, well, what's going to happen now?
What more information can we find out about this anomaly in him choosing love over logic and what can actually be concluded?
Is Zion like actually blown to bits because he did that?
I doubt it.
But also I feel like they're going to give us the foundation that they already set here.
Yeah, I'll say
Kevin
as she's talking to myself
some time to think, I think it's a combination of both
really because on one hand
with something like the Harry Potter
final book broken up with the two movies
it gives fans of
the book more
expansive storytelling
really allowing things to get fleshed out
that if it is an adaptation
and that would justify it
being a true part one part two
I feel like other stories
like
for example
Avengers Infinity War was originally
announced as Avengers Infinity
Part 1 and Avengers Infinity Part 2
but they changed it after Infinity
War
what was originally part 1 came out
because Endgame was a very different
kind of story than Infinity Part 1 was
and I feel like if you're going to do
something like
dividing it into 2 you have to
either A, allow it, have it be so much story that having it find a natural cutoff point would justify it being a sequel or two, the two parts are, you know, it's one story, but the way that they're told are vastly different experiences. And I feel like because a lot of those things are vastly different experiences or they're just so expansive that studios do cut them in half because, you know, you have to,
have them hit a certain amount of movie theaters in across the country or across the world rather and I feel like the longer the films is the less showings you can make for said movie which means less money they can make in return so that so the business side of it because yeah they want to have more opportunities for more showings both in the for part one and for part two but also it allows the stories to actually be
fleshed out. Like I feel like
it's tough because
I'm trying to think of like the mission impossible
part one and part two because originally
Dead Reckoning part one and then final
reckoning. I'm like could that have been
one movie?
I know I liked part one more than part
two but
you know it really varies but
yeah that's my long-wood way of saying both.
Do you have any
to add to that? No.
All right.
All right, Pop Gibberish.
Thank you for sending in your question, Mr. Mrs. Gibberish.
Have you played the tie-in Matrix game that follow Naomi and Ghost on their mission that actually affects events of the movie?
The example, there's the highway scene where they have to chase.
Morpheus.
We have to catch Morphias.
My bad.
I make up words sometimes.
Also, villain reveal.
I was the one in the comments of your previous reactions that I said that Aaron to speak up because you whispered dude.
Oh shit.
And pointed things out.
Joe Willard still love you guys so much.
Hashtag engagement.
Thank you for the engagement.
And no, I've not played the Matrix tie-in game, but I would really like to, especially after watching this.
And I also want to watch the Animatrix.
I don't know what that is about,
but I know there's like an anime tie-in to these movies.
Oh, that's cool.
I'm curious what you actually said,
Joe's Will Art,
about pointing things that we missed.
I don't know if you're saying previous reactions
as in the previous Matrix films,
or if you're talking about way different reactions
with me and Aaron.
I want to know.
I just want to know because I'm like,
I feel like we didn't miss anything on the Matrix stuff.
Maybe.
I don't think this is not even out yet.
he's aren't out yet
no they haven't even put the first one up yet at the time of recording this
oh then he's targeting other ones
okay we do a lot of reactions together so
yes it could be something I don't know you whispered dude
I'm a whisper man look at I do need to get closer to the mic though
I will say that and I've been told that so I'm trying to be
better for though so thank you very much he has this too much
too loud is it too intense well I would just have to
no they probably like it I would just have to turn my
your headset down okay I'll stop for your sake
I don't need to
ASMR experience
But yeah
Thank you for the
The note
And we will
I will work on it in the future
I will be louder
I can be soft spoken
But I don't want to blow my
Co-host ear out
Thank you
All right
Final question of the questions
Jay
Rustin
The man the mental legend
The guy who comes
Every freaking video
We love you dude
question what actor would you cast in film now if we're updated neo there for in the updated
neo there it's tough that's tough hmm maybe like this is weird but I want to say Miles
teller but maybe it's just because he has like brown hair and he's a good actor and he's done some
like stunty stuff um i also think tom cruise would be cool but like young tom cruise um but you're saying
now uh huh i'm gonna go out of the box i'm gonna say si um no simu liu yeah i think i play shang chi i think
you'd be a really good neo cool love it yeah and oh i think i think will play i think will
Smith could be a fun
Morpheus
because I know he's supposed
to play Neo originally
Yeah
I gotta think about that
Yeah
Also I think
Timothy Chalamake to be a fun of that
Timothy Chalamake
It could be a fun Neo as well
Then again he's already
Like a Messiah figure
Already in the Dune movies
Yeah he is
I'm trying to think of like
Who's really
Like popular right now
Because he said now
That I'm like
Oh who'd you actually cast
Who's working a lot
who's of that age.
I don't know.
I don't know.
But if you ask again, Jay, what I would say,
and I've said this multiple times is when you guys send in questions,
give us like multiple choice.
Give us a few to just get it going.
And then that will remind us of other things
just because it'll help with the conversation.
And that's just for any question,
for any reaction.
when you ask stuff like that, multiple choice is always a lot of fun.
We can add on top of that.
Yeah, exactly.
Get the spark going and then we can build off of that.
But, yeah, there's a lot of actors who could probably potentially do this.
Obviously, Keanu is the best.
He's synonymous with this role.
This is one of his career-defining roles.
But, yeah, it's an interesting question nonetheless.
Thank you.
Thank you, Jay Reston.
All right, before we get out of here, we can give our final freaking thoughts.
terror do you have any other things you want to share about this movie feelings um i really liked it i thought
it was a lot of fun i'm glad in the scenes where it did slow down where they're trying to give us
the foundation or relationship stuff um i did feel engaged because of the very good acting
i do think some of the action scenes like when they kept going and going and going i was like
wow this must have taken so much choreography and like just planned
I'm not sure that it maybe needed to be that long,
but I also understand they're feeding a beast of like
maybe that's actually what people want to see
versus there might be people like me who's like,
yeah, I want to have the story and the action,
but maybe it doesn't have to be two and a half hours.
I think that's what it was, right?
It's 207.
Two, okay, two hours.
I still really liked it, though.
those are just like my little thoughts of like
huh i wonder if i would have walked away with this going like holy crap that was awesome
and flew by if it was like an hour and a half versus two hours i don't i don't know i don't know
but um i know that it's cool and the way it ended to be concluded cool i'm down yeah yeah i think
in a lot of ways this movie is ahead of its time because of the concepts of choice and
reality and, you know, in a sense, multiple realities or, you know, multiple versions of the same
thing, especially in that scene with the architect towards the end there. I think, I'm pretty sure,
even in the immediacy of leaving this moment, I prefer the first movie, but I still did really
like this movie. I feel like it did a great job of elevating the action scenes, finding
inventive new ways to shoot action, while still, you know, allowing for.
a story to flow. I feel like definitely
this one was a lot more exposition and plot
heavy and some of the action scenes did kind of
drag for me. That being said, they were
still really cool
and they were still
impressive, but I
felt like maybe some of them could have been like a little
shortened up to kind of like,
you know, make the title little plot, the
plot a little tighter.
But yeah, still, still
really enjoying the movies a lot
and I'm excited to see how they
end up saving Zion.
what becomes of The Matrix.
Yeah, guys.
Yeah, let us know your comments, your feelings below, your theories, your takeaways, how this movie's affected you.
And yeah, look forward to talking with you guys about that in the comments and look forward to watching the final.
All right, guys, that'll be up for us today and we will see you in the next one.
