Tara Erickson & Aaron Alexander react to The Matrix Resurrections (2021), Lana Wachowski’s mind-bending return to one of the most iconic sci-fi franchises of all time. This long-awaited sequel revisits the world of the Matrix with a blend of metacommentary, romance, and high-concept action — asking what reality means when your memories might be part of the system. Keanu Reeves (John Wick, Speed) is back as Neo / Thomas Anderson, now living a seemingly normal life as a video game designer haunted by visions he can’t explain. Carrie-Anne Moss (Memento, Jessica Jones) returns as Trinity / Tiffany, whose connection to Neo remains the emotional core of the saga. As Neo begins to question his reality again, a new resistance emerges to pull him out. The film introduces a new generation of allies, including Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Watchmen, Aquaman) as Morpheus, Jessica Henwick (Iron Fist, Glass Onion) as the fearless rebel Bugs, and Jonathan Groff (Mindhunter, Hamilton) as the sinister new Agent Smith. Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother, Gone Girl) plays The Analyst, a chilling new architect of control, while Priyanka Chopra Jonas (Quantico, The White Tiger) appears as Sati, tied to the Matrix’s evolving mysteries. Starting point is 00:00:00 Thank you to Shopify for sponsoring this video. More on them in just a bit. Three, two, one, I clicked it. Oh, all righty then. Done it. We've made it on the other side of the Matrix. We're going to pull up some questions. because people, I'm sure, have an array of opinions and thoughts about this movie.
Starting point is 00:00:36 So we're going to have a conversation and talk to each other, talk to you guys. Thanks to Prepper for helping edit down these highlights. We appreciate you. Yes. Thank you. Also, if you're listening to this on Apple or Spotify, make sure you go and give us five mother-freaking stars. Also, if you're watching, this on YouTube. Thank you so much.
Starting point is 00:01:02 Leave a like, comment, and what else? Ring the bell. Ring the bell. Seeing you're notified. When the videos are coming out, let's dive right into the questions.
Starting point is 00:01:17 Tara. Let's get it. Residency. One last dive. Do you guys think it was worth making a fourth movie, especially after how long they waited to make it? Either way, I hope you guys enjoyed the movie. this was an interesting experience to say the least on one hand i'm glad had trinity and neo got to be reunited and have like a happy ending on the other hand what no i think this was um a mixed bag of a movie
Starting point is 00:01:57 I think there's some interesting concepts and cool things in here, for sure, you know, getting to reframe and restructure the initial film, but also adding some new context and commentary about our relationship with technology and how it sort of influences us and controls us. And granted, those themes are also in the first one, but I think showcasing and making the strong parallel between how. where we're at today like in the 2020s and how that is manifesting itself just opposed to you know what the matrix uh was originally doing in those films and how was super meta in that first half of the movie uh i i dug that stuff you know i like the fact that this was focused on trinity and neo and his relationship with her but on the other hand There are just some things that weren't as fulfilling as this one. So, like, from the, from the point of view of the characters, do I feel like this movie's wholly necessary?
Starting point is 00:03:08 No. But I can't say I hated watching it. There is fun to be had. There is interesting moments of humor here. And a lot of member berries, all the member berries for all three of the movies. So, yeah, I'm still pondering it, but I'm walking out of this experience feeling largely mixed, some bits of lazy writing, some, it's weird. The fight scenes weren't bad. They were just in comparison of the other ones and what they're known for in part.
Starting point is 00:03:50 It just kind of left some things to be desired. But, yeah, how are you feeling based off of Residency's question, Tara? Um, yeah. So I think that it was a little, it dragged a little bit for me. Honestly, uh, I still liked the film. I think the main thing is, is that when Neo and Trinity get together, obviously chemistry on screen, undeniable. I like that they went there, that that's part of the story. Um, it's just like, I don't know. I wasn't as excited. with the fight scenes and I wasn't there were some serious bars dropped like especially when Patrick Harris is talking that dialogue I really really liked and there's some other stuff that they said that I was like ah that's really great writing um but there's something about the quick cuts like that were were being transported into a born identity movie versus like a matrix movie um in the first few films they really stick
Starting point is 00:04:57 on a shot, especially when there was like battle going on. Like they flipped through the air, a leg would come out, hit somebody in the same shot. You'd see him hit the wall, right? It was like a very stylistic choice. And to me, that's an even harder choice to film. So now that we're in 2021, why were we doing so many cuts like we were in a different franchise? I'm not, I'm not sure. there's some reason that it fell flat to me and I don't know why I can't really put my finger on it I don't know if it's because I'm tired or if I'm just like yeah it was all right it it was like still parts of it were fun to watch and enjoyable and some stuff was very cool to look at but I wasn't like super amped up or like hell yeah let's freaking go like I was with the
Starting point is 00:05:55 other ones. And they don't really know what to tell you right now. But I think we'll move on to the next question. Amen. Jackson Ryan, now that I've seen Tron Era's Matrix R reminds me of how I felt after seeing that, there's a visual override happening. However, the story after three films just falls kind of flat, yet full at the same time. Like a lot was put in the story, but how was it put together just bothered me? If there was anything you would change about the story, what would it be? Oh, okay. It would be that Trinity doesn't just walk for five seconds with her husband and her kids and then decide and then just like remember that she's in the Matrix and her name is actually Trinity. I did not like that at all.
Starting point is 00:06:45 What I would change is that Neo would go wait like in a rom-com. I don't even care of how corny it is and she does wait. and he kisses her and then she's like yeah or he would kiss her before the the freaking kids and the guy got there then again nea wouldn't care because he's like i know you're a freaking robot like yeah yeah i would one make the action scenes not only breathe more but allow them to be a visual feast allow them to actually play out in real time without the intervention of hyper editing because i i think i laughed or like not even cringe but i made it i remember having a physical reaction at one point where bugs like she like punches something but it shows like half of her fist and half the thing that she's she's punching in one frame and it cuts to a different thing i was like what the hell was that
Starting point is 00:07:47 what are what are we doing we're not showcasing these long scenes and barely having any cuts or even like hidden cuts it was it's kind of uh baffling to me also i felt that jonathan groff's rendition of mr smith didn't really add much to the movie just kind of felt in some some action scenes and i felt like the movie either could have made better use of his character or just not include him at all because i felt like it's just it's also so hard to replace hugo weaving he was so great as that character and he just came out with a totally different kind of vibe it didn't feel like that character at all because even and it's not even a matter of hugo weaving even though he
Starting point is 00:08:34 you know is iconic for that character but the guy who was playing agent smith in the real world like in the past movie sounded like yeah he sounded like him he had those those those cadences. And that's not even how Hugo Reving talks naturally, but that is the character of Agent Smith. That is that character's cadence. And he didn't bring anything other than the member
Starting point is 00:09:00 berries of having the same name to that role. Yeah. And I feel I guess conflicting feelings about them incorporating AI into their society,
Starting point is 00:09:17 incorporating tech with sentience, because on one hand, you know, that's what caused their destruction in the first place by giving AI its own autonomy or giving technology it's on autonomy, computers, machines. But on the other hand, like, that's where we're going. But then also, this is also an semblance of a cautionary tale. So it's weird that it kind of looped back around. And I feel like some people having some similar opinions about Tron Aries and had its advocation for
Starting point is 00:09:45 AI so I definitely understand how your feelings there I personally had fun with that movie when watching it but yeah I feel like this movie for sure left a lot to be desired it had some interesting commentary and some interesting conversations I dug
Starting point is 00:10:03 the meta conversations and the cyclical nature of reboots even though it's doing the thing it's commentating on which is that was fun It was fun. I enjoy that stuff. But yeah, just it didn't live up to its potential in justifying its own existence. Yeah, I know.
Starting point is 00:10:24 Reject Nation, when we launched this channel, I thought learning how to film and edit will be hard. Until we launched a merch store. Total panic. But a friend recommended Shopify, and Shopify made it easy. And fortunately, they're today's sponsor. We use them to run RejectnationShop.com, and somehow we didn't screw it up. For those who aren't aware, Shopify powers 10% of all. U.S. e-commerce from brands like Mattel and Jim Shark to indie creators, candle makers, comic artists,

Starting point is 00:11:42 the movie loves to poke fun at itself and the whole idea of reboots and sequels did that self-wear humor make it more entertaining or did it make you feel like you were stuck in a weird movie trailer loop? I feel like I just commented on that. You, you, yeah. Like, well, and specifically, like,
Starting point is 00:11:58 you throughout the movie felt like you were in a weird loop. Yeah, it did feel like a weird loop. Like, he was like, I don't like this. And you were like, this might be my favorite one. I didn't see my favorite one. You said, oh, no, you said this might be, I like this way more than three. And then, like, it was 20 minutes later, you were like, I don't know about this.
Starting point is 00:12:19 I was all over the place. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Totally, totally. Which I get, I mean, I assume that a lot of flans fans probably were conflicted over this film. They are adding an entirely new idea on top of the Matrix lore that we already fully well knew. And we take quite a bit at the top to get there. We are focused more on. him and his life in this game.
Starting point is 00:12:44 And I get it that we needed to see him operating and like not seeing Trinity so that when the Michael Harris, Patrick Michael Harris says it, whatever the, that's not his name. Thank you. Says it that we're like, oh, yeah, because they can't be together. But when they're close, it freaking works, right? It's like the weird chemistry. But regardless of all that, I assume that a lot of fans were like, But wait, we ended on when Neo is up with the frickin, he's with the sentience and he's like, he's attached.
Starting point is 00:13:21 And then we don't really pick up from there, which is maybe what people were thinking. But instead we added a whole new idea on top of it, the video, like the video game thing that we stayed with for a little bit of while until we got back into the real world. That, yeah, I don't, I don't know. I don't really know how I felt about it. I wasn't like, wow, this is super fun. So I don't know what to tell you about that. Jay Rushden, question, what code name was the best in the movie? I like bugs, but that was fun, especially when you woke up and she said, what's up, Doc?
Starting point is 00:13:55 Yeah. Yeah, that's cute. What were? Hold on. Yeah, there's no other. It's so funny. That's like literally the only name that is like funny coat. rest of them are all stuff that we've heard.
Starting point is 00:14:14 It's Morpheus, like Lexi, Sati, which we know, Niobe, that's, so whatever, bugs is the one to go with. I just wanted to look it up to be like, what's the other option? Because I couldn't think of one. Yeah. So, Keb B, unlike the first three movies, which mostly hung out in Australia for filming, this one roamed around San Francisco, Germany, and Chicago. They were so secretive about it that the working title was Project Ice Cream.
Starting point is 00:14:41 If you look closely, one of the characters, Lexi has a tattoo of an electrical outlet on the back of her neck. It's right where the Matrix plug would go if she needed to jack in. Ah, okay. That was interesting. That's interesting. Okay. Cool. Thanks for the fact, Kev B.
Starting point is 00:15:00 And thank you, everybody, for sending in questions. Yeah, before we get out of here, let's do a little rotten tomatoes. I think we made up did the first one. do you remember the scores for that it was high I mean it was like in the 80s we'll speed around it what do you think it is
Starting point is 00:15:17 for the for Matrix 1 Matrix 1 I would say critics went with like an 81 and maybe the audience was 87 okay critics 83 audience 85 oh very close okay Matrix reloaded
Starting point is 00:15:33 Matrix 2 um okay critics 77 audience 81 critics 74 audience 72 okay okay okay matrix 33 yeah matrix revolutions um okay critics 70 audience 77 critics 33 yeah this one critics god Yeah, how does it make you feel? I wonder if they're... Okay, critics, 45.
Starting point is 00:16:13 Okay. Might be higher than that. Audience, 71. Critics and audiences are actually matched on this one. It's 63. Huh, okay. Yeah. All right.
Starting point is 00:16:24 So it's the, I guess by critic standards, it's the second lowest one. It's the third highest rated one. Which, I don't know. You did say, you were like, I think I like this more than three. I did, but then my feelings changed multiple times. You said it was such conviction, though. I did.
Starting point is 00:16:44 Because this one was more, this one had a lot more Neo and Trinity in it, but also had some dumb shit in it. Yeah, it did. That writing with Trinity where she just turns around and she's like, I love the line. I loved when she was like,
Starting point is 00:16:58 I've always hated that name. And if you don't take your hands off me right now, which that, you would, the audience would have been like, woo! had it not just been five seconds of walking and then she
Starting point is 00:17:12 realizes this isn't real like what the fuck how did the producers not go this seems lazy something else should happen here they should have screen tested this they really should have it's a two and a half hour movie that's really long I think like
Starting point is 00:17:30 cut some stuff down I don't think we need it at all cut it down chop it up do you have any final thoughts for you out of here I'm good. All right. Thank you guys so much for watching. Let us know if you want us to watch the Animatrix. I would love to watch that series of shorts if you guys are interested.
Starting point is 00:17:46 And yeah, that'll be it for us on the Matrix main films. We love you guys and we'll see you on the other side. Duceus.
