Starting point is 00:01:52 Best in the land. Oh, man, we just got done watching the mummy with Brandon Fraser, 1999. How do you feel about it? Aaron. Oh man, Tara, I thought it was fun. Yeah. That was a fun little 90s classic. You know, I went my whole life without seeing
Starting point is 00:02:07 what this movie was about. Surprisingly, I don't think I've maybe seen like clips here and there, like the stuff that was 3D launching, but as far as like the plot itself, I knew nothing about it. I definitely have to put myself in like a 90s mindset. Like this is a summer blockbuster
Starting point is 00:02:23 90s. What was going on? And yeah, I definitely understand the appeal, you know. Brandon Fraser is very charming has that kind of rugged old school action star thing to him going uh the the love interest she was very smart and integral maybe not the physical sense but she had the brains well he was the bronze and that that dichotomy between them made that that uh old classic attraction between the two characters i thought the music was really good i think the special effects for the time were really great you know because what this is 20 plus years old and you know the money
Starting point is 00:02:57 looked really phenomenal for the time that it was presented you know and also the music was really good because it was able to be bombastic and big while also having those notes of what we associate with with like an Egyptian or Middle Eastern setting in like in film so I think balancing those things and bringing that to like a blockbuster setting was very cool and yeah I think this is like a fun ride and I definitely understand why it spawned a franchise why I had a ride at Universal Studios and why it's like a beloved movie. Yeah, because I mean, and also the fact that it follows
Starting point is 00:03:34 sort of a love story that we set up in the beginning where it's like this guy actually isn't all bad, right? His love died and he's really just trying to resurrect her but he's killing, he wants to kill a bunch of people in between. But through it like his love story of getting rid of him, Brendan Fraser's character falls in love with Rachel Weiss. That's her name. I just saw her credit with Eve.
Starting point is 00:03:57 Rick and Evelyn, right? They get to have their love story in the midst of kind of searching after the mummy and getting rid of his, but we kind of had to. But the special effects, I really, really enjoy it. Like the end of that, with the sand coming up, I was like, this looks incredible. It looked so, so real. And the mummy, I watched Night Rider on this channel with Nicholas Cage, and that did not, they had some sort of mummy skeleton thing, and I don't remember when that,
Starting point is 00:04:27 movie was made, but I think it was made after 1999, and that skeleton does not hold up to this one. This one looks great. I loved it, and I love that he had to reassemble himself and that due to just human greed, and we see it especially at the end, but human greed in the midst of they're like, oh, the treasure, they get all of those bottles, which hold his pieces, like all his different organs that he needs to swallow to then have a full person back. That we see how the greed like overtakes them but at the end especially with uh benny being in the tomb of gold of like he got everything that he wished for and like it brings death like greed is never it's never a good thing i mean it's it's nice to have ambition for nice things and money and gold we get it we all
Starting point is 00:05:16 want to be like loaded because we'd be like life would be easier if we were but at the same time uh i think this this movie does a great job of of highlighting agreed in how it can get you in trouble in like the worst ways and that really what he found at the end was you know when the guys like we're leaving with nothing yet again and this cute little line where he's like I wouldn't say for all of us and I like that it's a cute little love story and she's like a little librarian and he's just like on the hunt for stuff and he shoots up stuff he'll protect her I wonder if the second one has both of them in it like Isn't there another one, like another mummy, like a mummy too?
Starting point is 00:05:59 I know the only thing I know about this franchise is there's at least three mummy movies and then a spin-off. Oh my goodness. Okay. Well, I would, I'd be intrigued to see if it's Rachel Weiss again along with Brendan Frazier or if they switch it totally up. Also, now that you say her name, I do recognize her primarily from Black Widow because she was the mom in that movie. But I know she's been in a lot of other stuff, but she just looked very different. and a lot younger in this movie. It's those 1999 eyebrows.
Starting point is 00:06:28 I tell you that much. They fooled me. Yep, they sure did. But I also love the music. I'm going to look up some trivia real quick on this movie so we can find out some good juice here. Let me see. The Mummy, 1999 to Nine. 1999 to nine.
Starting point is 00:06:46 Bup, but, but, up, okay. One second, guys. Let me get to this trivia. I will say I did like it I did have a fun time I do have some criticisms though very minor I humor not all the humor landed for me
Starting point is 00:07:01 and I don't want to say chalk it up to it being of the times because I've seen movies that are older than this and we've seen a movie that's kind of came around the same time as this that we I don't know if it's come out at this point but granted I don't think I think humor is not necessarily
Starting point is 00:07:18 time based but it can it's just execution wise and I granted it's not a yuck yuck like straight through comedy but you know it did have its moments uh I would have liked to have seen more learn more about Brennan Fraser I feel like we just knew the bare essentials to just get him attached as a protagonist and yeah maybe a little maybe in the sequels like can diversify some of the ways we take out these bad guys because I feel like after like the third time of trying to shoot him up and you see it doesn't work maybe let's switch it up you know like maybe let's try some new but again i'm i'm sure at least in
Starting point is 00:07:55 the action department i will give it uh this grace for being of its time you know and it's i think it's honestly going back and on hearkening back to like those older cereals you know making reference to like stuff like indiana jones and like stuff of the 30s of both these swashbuckling adventures so you know it being uh wanting to honor those kind of stories i think does get a little bit of a pass, but I hope that with this being the first in the franchise, it kind of ups the ante and gets more innovative in the way
Starting point is 00:08:27 that we address the threat at hand. Yeah, for sure. I mean, because they kill them with like TNT, they have swords and the guns, which is very like old school to stick to those, but I think there's a way that they could have used their fire a lot more in a creative way, or just finding out more
Starting point is 00:08:43 I guess about the spells, like maybe Rachel Weiss could have, I mean, I know that they're in the book, but with them having the knowledge of her being a librarian and then having the knowledge about what is in there and the hylogrifts and all that um what they could have done with that more on like as from the human side of what what intelligence do they bring to the table that's like oh snap we didn't realize you could kill him that way also right which would have been cool yeah um yeah um okay so i got some cool trivia here now listen Brendan fraser nearly died during the scene where his character
Starting point is 00:09:17 is hanged. Rachel Weiss remembered that he, Brendan Fraser, stopped breathing and had to be resuscitated. Oh my God. You guys, like, what? Is this why Brandon Fraser disappeared for a little while after the mummy?
Starting point is 00:09:35 Didn't he like, oh, wait for a minute. He did. Like, I'm like, he almost died. He almost died on said. That's the scariest thing. That also, it looks so real. We both went, whoa. Like it did not look like, I'm very surprised that they would use a real person for that stunt.
Starting point is 00:09:55 We were still pulled out in a master shot. It does look better because you could tell it was him. Right. But still I'm like, cut away. Cut, cut to like have it drop. Don't have it drop fully. Cut and then cut to a close up shot of him then the rest of him falling. Like we could use an editing for that, but good for you, Brendan.
Starting point is 00:10:15 Yeah, I thought it was a great shot though. Yeah, it's a great shot. It was, but I'm like, he almost died. That's so scary. Okay, let's see. So, so, so. Oh, the library disaster was done in one take. Okay.
Starting point is 00:10:33 It would have taken an entire day to reshoot if a mistake had been made. Ooh. Wow, right? Like, they got really lucky. Okay, with the exception of a loincloth, a few pieces. of jewelry and pasties. Patricia Velasquez was nude except for the body paint, which took four hours to apply.
Starting point is 00:10:56 So the woman that we saw, she was mainly just all body paint, which I didn't realize. I thought that there was like a sort of material on her that was like black and white and her arms were just painted. It was her whole body. Okay, let me see if I can get to some spoilers. Um, this one seems, okay, Rachel Weiss was not a big fan of horror films, but did not see this film as such.
Starting point is 00:11:23 As she said in an interview, it's Hocum, a comic book world. All right, Rachel. Interesting. Um, okay. Let's see. Um, the production had the official support of the Moroccan army and the cast members had kidnapping insurance taken out on them. A fact, Stephen Summers disclosed to the cast only after shooting had. finished so like they were there shooting in a scary uh environment and the actors could have
Starting point is 00:11:53 been kidnapped and he didn't tell him till after oh wow that's crazy that they had to take insurance for that um okay let me see if i can get a couple more if i can get spoilers for you i'm trying to find them but y'all okay there's a lot of all right um the scene where o'connell saves evelyn from the sacrificial slab was filmed with Brendan Fraser fighting against Invisible Mummies. He meticulously choreographed his every movement. Whoa. And all the mummies were later added to the shot
Starting point is 00:12:26 with computer generated imagery matching his moves. That's incredible. That's awesome. So Brendan had this whole idea of like, no, I'm going to do this, this, this. That's amazing that they worked around him. And how great was that? That was an amazing choreograph.
Starting point is 00:12:43 I was wondering how they filmed that. Brickin job, right? It makes them more impressive. I'll read one more. The character Ardeth Bay was originally scripted to die at the end of the film. This was changed by director Stephen Summers because he thought the character was too heroic
Starting point is 00:12:55 to be killed off. As a result, Bay also appeared in the sequel of Mummy Returns. Okay. I don't know who Ardith Bay was, y'all. Yeah. There's a lot on here. Y'all could go through it on IMDB. Anyway, that was fun.
Starting point is 00:13:10 I can't believe that Brandon Frazier almost died. that's insane while filming this that's scary and crazy and insane I have a lot of respect for Brendan like he disappeared for a minute but then he came back with the whale and he was like I'm still here that's right uh he looks hot and his voice in this movie I was like oh okay Brendan I see you now I see you um and yes I love the soundtrack I loved a lot about this movie it was fun and I I'm surprised I said, yeah, I've never seen it, but I don't think it did as well back in the day. I'm not sure if it got great reviews. I know now it has five stars.
Starting point is 00:13:49 It's kind of like a cult classic, but I think when it was released, I'm not sure if it did very well. And that may be why, but I'm glad that we got to watch it.
