We discuss the scale, tone, visuals, mythological accuracy, and how this adaptation appears to balance grounded human emotion with supernatural spectacle. The movie is set to showcase Iconic figures like Odysseus, Penelope, Telemachus, Athena, Poseidon, Circe, Calypso, Polyphemus, the Sirens, and the Lotus-Eaters, while teasing legendary moments such as the Trojan War aftermath, the Cyclops encounter, the siren song, the long voyage home, and the battle to reclaim Ithaca. We also dive into the cast, performances teased in the footage, the music, cinematography, and how this version compares to past adaptations and the original epic poem. This discussion explores whether The Odyssey is positioning itself as a prestige mythological epic, a grounded survival story, or a full fantasy spectacle — and how it could resonate with modern audiences. Let us know your thoughts on the trailer, the casting, and whether this looks like a faithful or reimagined take on Homer’s timeless story. Starting point is 00:00:27 John, did you know they played five minutes of this or something like that? before a movie that's in theaters right now guitar, fire, and ash. We've got a trailer now for The Odyssey. This video is sponsored by Rula. More on them just a bit. Homer Simpson's The Odyssey.
Starting point is 00:00:43 Are you ready to check this out, John? Do! Classic. Just the armor right there. Burial. Look at that armor, damn. Jesus, yes. Sleak.
Starting point is 00:01:05 Kind of looks like the Batman kill. No one could stand between my bed. It's got that Nolan dread. I know. Oh, snap. I forgot she's in this. She plays Penelby? Not even me. Wow.
Starting point is 00:01:26 breath taken Christopher Nolan Nolan texts the horse the Trojan the Trojan horse oh brutal damn okay I wonder what that sequence gonna be like I love how moody this is oh interesting I'm very curious about the more supernatural stuff cool so we will go all fantastical. Wow. It's nice to actually see it going fantastical. I wasn't sure about it. Damn.
Starting point is 00:02:04 Well, as he keeps talking about, he's going to make them, like, real. And I'm like, what does that mean, though? Oh, it feels like such a physical toll to put this movie together. You'll come back. What if I can't? Oh. You'll make it back. Don't worry.
Starting point is 00:02:22 I'll make it. Fellow reject, I've been going to therapy. since I believe around 2012, and admittedly in the past couple of months, I haven't been as consistent as I like to be. Having a difficult time asking for help, having a difficult time being honest with myself, having a difficult time just opening up in general. But going back recently, it's helped me reconnect with my actual values in life. And already, I feel like the direction has been helping me get my mental health and personal life back on the track I wanted to be at. And that's why today I'm happy to talk about Rula.
Starting point is 00:02:56 It's an online platform that helps you connect with licensed therapists that will specialize in you. Rula makes it easy to find affordable, high-quality therapy that's actually covered by insurance. You just go to Rula.com slash rejects, answer a few questions, and they'll match you with a therapist who fits your needs and schedule. You can meet with them online, and Rula patients typically pay $15 per session when using insurance. I'm interrupting this ad, which is already interrupting a video, to let you know. that I was at a party last night where I caught up with one of my closest friends to find out
Starting point is 00:03:28 that a couple months ago, she actually started using Rula, has not been seeing a therapist, been loving it. I just wish she waited until we partnered with them so she could use our code. They made therapy accessible in a way that alleviates a lot of the problems that I often hear from people when they're trying to get into therapy. There's no waiting list. There's no calling around. And of course, if you do decide to sign up, you'll more than likely be asked how you heard about them. It would mean a lot if you could also support us and let them know. by choosing our name in their drop-down menu. And sincerely, you deserve mental health
Starting point is 00:03:58 that works for you and not against your budget. So you can find the therapist that's right for you at Rula.com slash rejects. That's Rula.com slash rejects. Thank you again, Rula. Take care of yourselves, people. Dang, what a journey that's going to be. All right, our official first trailer, John,
Starting point is 00:04:17 and we caught the teaser, whatever. I don't know. My memory is not great on when we caught that teaser. but that was very John Bernthal heavy more telemachus centric him and John Bernthal with a little glimpses of it like him in the mess hall and he's like telling the story
Starting point is 00:04:33 or whatever yeah where this one actually seems to capture the breath the scope but a lot of it looks a little bit more act one you know before he actually gets lost however the big question has been what we were sort of discussing of what will this
Starting point is 00:04:51 ultimately feel like considering just how big and mythical and godlike all this is how would they do grounded and i like that one little tease which is that the cyclops that's the one creature that i've heard them talk about so i'm like is that the cyclops that are showing right there that's my it was shrouded in darkness it was still obscure yeah yeah yeah i mean in in the iterations of this and it's been a long time since i've like really dove into any of these myths and and you know epic tales but i feel like the cyclops often portrayed
Starting point is 00:05:25 as like a big giant of some kind Yeah And too I thought he encountered The Cyclops on his own Not with the group of people I don't remember
Starting point is 00:05:35 Doesn't matter Yeah What does it matter It's a big creature And we know it's gonna be Fantasticical Yeah yeah yeah Well and I mean
Starting point is 00:05:43 I've been really curious About what the fantastical stuff Is gonna look and feel like Because he's been out here saying like Or there have been at least reports that he's trying to make it more realistic yeah and you know we've seen what that means in the fantastical context of like a batman type character it's like oh it's modern tech and all that stuff but because this is an
Starting point is 00:06:02 ancient story uh i do yeah wonder how literally that report has been you know portrayed because they're going to be gods they're going to be creatures like that and that's more fantastical than what a lot of the commentaries so far in lead up has had me expecting actually so but this seems like they're grounding it so much within the production design like still trying to do as much of it in camera as possible like this looks like the kind of movie that blood sweat and tears were done to get this project made you know i've the you could feel like the physical endurance and so much of this of the tale is about perseverance and you can kind it's like that that dread and longing and shrugging along the hardship that's all omitted just in the vibe of this whole thing even
Starting point is 00:06:51 though there's not like a lot of different shots and it's not heavily hailed on action there was like just enough for like the tone and the mood to capture that harrowing hardship that this long epic journey will be you know so that was like my favorite aspect of it uh while still like not looking it's weird because it like it looks like a nolan film but also it does it's more blue you know i feel like nolan films are more yellow and this he likes because i mean you know he he did i feel like like dunkirk is blue a lot of dark nights blue you know i feel like he's either in a yeah
Starting point is 00:07:27 very blue or like i feel like the prestige is kind of blue that's true yeah i guess blue is like when he goes for like the sadness yeah yeah yeah yeah when he's when he's outside in that natural light it's often very blue but but yeah i mean he's a he's a filmmaker who employs like a vivid palette for things even if you know the imagery is trying to be more grounded and stuff like that
Starting point is 00:07:46 and this definitely carries that heft it feels like it's of great purpose and pomp pump in circumstance and yeah and enter on this battlefield that's you know just the ceremonial kind of resting of the armor atop the gray like yeah it just it sets this nice you know tone of this will be a huge costly endeavor for this character of odysseus the thing i heard is that they they developed iMac's cameras for this one that made it lighter so they could actually do handheld shots. Oh, that's cool.
Starting point is 00:08:24 Because normally with IMAX, you have to be fluid. And it's like, it's a big operation to, no matter how much they make them lighter. But this one, because they've made IMAX cameras where they can be lighter, but you're not getting the full scope frame in the way Nolan likes it. Sure. And this way you can get that full frame and still go handheld. Because that was, that's the thing that Nolan really does like to do is he does do handheld quite a bit. Oh, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:49 I mean, like, and that's, you know, You know, kind of a fun. It's how you know that you're kind of at the top echelon of the business in general. The art, the form, the craft is like when you're like, we need to create something new in order for me to realize this. And God, with like how popular this kind of photography has become because of Christopher. And I've got to imagine a lot of filmmakers out there probably celebrating that innovation. And it's curious, too, because like, you know, this is a kind of story that is more classical, obviously. so like it sets you up to expect something more fluid and graceful but you know using that handheld
Starting point is 00:09:24 technique to put us further into what looks like you know a very tangible you know ancient greece is fascinating yeah and i love how it's all like developed man like it's on locations you know yeah it feels yeah like it feels like real places and real you know circumstance even though again what we know about this is that it will be somewhat fantastical. It's like even that shot where the giant figure comes into the cave mouth feels like a real thing that's happening. Yeah. Rather than
Starting point is 00:09:56 like, oh, I'm watching Clash or the Titans or something like that, you know. And it was dawning on me, too, that Matt Damon hasn't done too many action movies. No. It's done like the Borm films. He did that great war movie. And I can't think of anything else. Elysium. I guess that counts. It's an action movie technically. Yeah. But yeah,
Starting point is 00:10:12 like, you know, being this like, you know, grizzled lead you know war as you call him a war hero it's a different it feels different in this time and place but yeah
Starting point is 00:10:22 yeah and to see him be a different kind of lead in a movie like this that will certainly have you know action and battle
Starting point is 00:10:29 even if it's not like a hundred percent like an action movie yeah well I'm excited man this is the kind of movie where he don't need much footage like both
Starting point is 00:10:37 you combine the teaser and this and there's really not a whole lot to go on I haven't seen the prolog but I imagine the prologs amazing from what I've heard
Starting point is 00:10:45 the prologue is like the teaser kind of oh so not as like it's not like the darned night of prologues you know i haven't heard like the full description but but at least the start of what i have you know kind of like who what is it you know as has been like oh yeah it's john bernthal's talking to tom holland he's about to i feel like this is going to have that wrap around of like you're being told the story and then hearing into the actual legend well i wonder when dealing with time how much they'll go to tom holland as he's trying to like find his father and stuff he'll have a big long beard by the end of the movie yeah it'll be really really fun
Starting point is 00:11:22 anyway he'll turn he'll turn into to tobe and wire by you yes and then andrew garfield will be one of the gods yeah all right guys well up in heimer two you guys excited leave your thoughts down below for this should is there an iliad movie that's a great question i don't know probably someone's adapted into at least the miniseries, but I have no idea, actually. We've got to watch it first. Damn, there's so
Starting point is 00:11:52 much cast in this movie, and we barely seen them. There's a lot of people to unpack here. Yeah. Like James Remar. I'm excited. James Remar's a great actor. He is. And Ryan Hurst is in stuff. I've seen his face before. And Mia Gauth is in that Blade movie. That's right. That
Starting point is 00:12:08 is getting made definitely. I'll see you guys. Thank you.
