Starting point is 00:01:30 the easy to use fantasy sports betting app more on them and just a bit without further ado let's dive in to the penguin episode three oh my god I love this show so much that's my favorite of the three they keep getting better somehow man
Starting point is 00:01:48 that was great that balanced action and drama so well there were so many scenes of just talking uh if you're finding on Spotify and iTunes. We just watched episode three of the penguin. I think both of our favorite episode yet. The amount of groundwork they laid with the one-two punch of the first episode being about plotting and the second episode being about improvising. And then this third episode, giving us the humanity to make it so it's agonizing to experience any of the things that might happen to anyone.
Starting point is 00:02:17 There's so much tension. There's so much world building in that tension. And it's using like lore, like Batman lore. This was so good. This is what you, like, this is what I want out of a drama that happens to be based off comics. Yeah, like the bad man It's a slow build. It's a build.
Starting point is 00:02:32 It's like, there's exciting stuff in the first two episodes, but to me making Vic the true eye line into the show, because he's the one you can relate to the most of your average viewer who watches this show. I hope you're not someone who's like, yeah, it's been the penguin. I'm almost like, you know. I get it. I run a club. I do some gangsters
Starting point is 00:02:48 stuff. Shit. But, so to see from his perspective that actually makes me more endeared to it all i ever care of the main thing i care about with any show is like connection to it and i think this like solidified that connection by putting it in the eye line of vick and then seeing that parental father's son dynamic that's like a toxic kind of love little reminisce and a breaking bad to a certain way jessie pink then walter white is strong yeah but you know you see so much of the humanity and awes throughout this and and getting like these emotional scenes just
Starting point is 00:03:20 between him and sophia that dynamic is so strong then more working through like the unresolved past throughout this episode. 10 years of baggage and then he still goes, lever. Yeah, I know. Like, dude, it's in the car. Leave her.
Starting point is 00:03:34 Terrible. What exactly happened at the end with the Moronies? I'm a little confused there. I mean, I think that they realized that Penguin was playing them too. Like, he's not loyal to anyone. Oh, yeah,
Starting point is 00:03:46 so they were following what was happening with Viti and now realize. Yeah. That should put that together. It's really easy to understand. Because remember, they had the photo. Yeah, yeah, that's right. Yeah, yeah. It's okay.
Starting point is 00:03:57 It's been a week. I understand. But, like, in the dialogue scenes, what we're able to accomplish with the insecurity of Oz being what he sees in this kid and how that would cause him to feel so connected. And then every line of dialogue about, like, everything I did for you, he gave Vince everything he wanted someone to give him. And that betrayal was so, like, down to his bones. and then he betrays her. Like, this show is so good at making you go, like, okay, I see where you're coming from.
Starting point is 00:04:30 Like, the left turns it takes, and you still identify with everyone's choices. Like, I love that Vince, we know we should have gone with that girl. And yet you completely understand why he stayed. Like, he seemed like very genuine when he was confessing, lamenting all those sorrows.
Starting point is 00:04:45 Yeah. And it seemed like I forgot for a second that he's playing both sides. I forgot for a second that he's doing that. But he's only openly a double agent to the morose. Ronies. That's what I was a little confused about. I see what you're saying. Yeah, because he's, he's openly said to Sal, like, I'll be a double agent.
Starting point is 00:04:59 But he's a triple agent because he's just working for himself. I know. At the end of the day, it's Penguins game. He's going to run the gangs. Could have talked himself out of that in some way. There's no time. Gang war. I think the way they just write everyone is so human, especially for Penguin. I was watching this show with like this episode going, man, I don't know what's happening right now. Like fucking Oswald Penguins is up. So connected to this guy in this random episode. I like, one of my favorite tidbits of this show is when a character talks about themselves
Starting point is 00:05:25 and then the other character listening takes it personal. Like that is unbelievably human. Like, no, I'm not talking about you, but the way projection can happen in a heated situation. I think that's what they nail here with so many of the characters and just these like underlying observations that everyone is constantly having about each other. So much unspoken things happening in the middle of a lot of dialogue. it's brilliant hot check
Starting point is 00:05:52 this is the first time I have felt like this three episodes in since Daredevil on Netflix it's pretty great where I'm like acknowledging the comic stuff or I'm thinking about all of the the drama but it's still
Starting point is 00:06:08 like if you think about this show you actually zoom out it's the goddamn penguin show I know who would have thought there's so many moments where I'm like that's comicy as hell like there's moments where they like switch to a comic panel but then the dialogue is incredibly like
Starting point is 00:06:22 Emmy award winning and then the acting and I love that I get taste of that with the boys I get taste of that with Wanda Vision I do get those elements and I'm not discounting any of those shows quality but I don't think since Daredevil have I felt that it was one didn't compromise
Starting point is 00:06:38 the other when I think Wanda Vision was doing really good at being a drama I think it sacrificed some of it's like well I remember it's coming show successfully building a Batman universe and I haven't felt that like Daredevil was the last time I was like oh this is what I dreamed of as a child because I arguably
Starting point is 00:06:54 the show is better than the comic no disrespect to the creators of the comic but the way they were able to modernize it is much more approachable and it's much more unilaterally entertaining I would say that Daredevil is as good of a comic as it is a show and this is the first time I have felt that I'm
Starting point is 00:07:10 seeing the Batman elements I love in a show that's also as good of a show. Yeah I would agree with that and that's crazy. I think it's a really strong show because at the end of the day it's just a really strong gangster show. Yeah? This happens to have a guy
Starting point is 00:07:23 that looks like a penguin in. I never... Set in Gotham. Never thought a penguin show out of them all would be like so good. How many months, Greg? How many months did I say?
Starting point is 00:07:34 This was going to be the show of the year. I think... Penguin. I think like honestly, the three leads, but particularly the top two leads, Sophia and Colin Farrell as Oz. They deserve Emmy nominations.
Starting point is 00:07:47 They're sensational. And I feel like HBO knows what they have on their hands. That's why they made it like, no, this is going to be an HBO original. I think that's why the embargo was so late. Usually, I, usually with the embargoes late, I'm like, uh, they're hiding it. I think this time they're like, we don't have to get press. Reject Nation, I never really consider myself a sports guy. I know so many people who are in this sports. Some of people who watch this channel are into sports. My wife into sports. Sometimes it feels emasculating while she yells at the TV and I don't know what's
Starting point is 00:08:12 going on. Why that feels emasculating? That's more to do with me than her. That's for sure. But anyway, the peer pressure got me to find a way to find fun with sports. And if you're looking for a fun and simple way to get into daily fantasy sports let me introduce you to prize picks it's america's number one daily fantasy app with over five million active members and honestly it's the only one i've ever used but for everyone who i know who has used fantasy sports thingies before says this is the easiest one they've ever used my wife included and the misses is never wrong all you do is pick more or less on player stat projections like how many yards your favorite qb that's not for quarterback by the way we'll throw or how many points a star player will score
Starting point is 00:08:47 You can pick between two and six players, and if you get them right, you win. Even I can comprehend this, and I'm not the smartest guy. And like I said, it's easy to get started and it's easy to use. A lot of emphasis on the easy. Here's one easy example. So at the time of recording this, we just bet on Jordan Love, Jaden Reed, and Joe Burrow. Consulted with John. John knows more about sports than me.
Starting point is 00:09:05 So really, this was his decision. So let's see if he take this whole operation. Or if we're filthy rich now. Great thing if one of your players ever gets injured. Price Picks has an injury insurance policy. I could use some health insurance in my own life. So your lineups stay in play rhymes, bars, baby. And if you miss one pick, you can still cash out thanks to their unique flex play option.
Starting point is 00:09:25 It's available in most states, including California, Texas, and Georgia. You can download the Price Picks app today. Use code Rejects and get $50 instantly when you play just $5. There's a lot of fives in this shoutout. $5, $50, $5 million. It's like the number 23. But anyway, you don't even have to win to get the bonus. Isn't that awesome?
Starting point is 00:09:45 Price picks, run your game. Get into Daily Fantasy Sports, like this expert over here. Put it out. The embargo is actually the 12th. I thought it was the 19th. Oh. Yeah. Okay.
Starting point is 00:09:56 I don't know if people watching this are going to three weeks out. Got it. They let people have screeners early for it. How many episodes? All eight. What? Yeah. So that's why they didn't.
Starting point is 00:10:07 They trust it. There's eight hours of incredibly iconic television. No, they trust. And I think the build is cool because I don't think about action with this show. and then it seemed like we're getting something truly exciting and you've got to really pay that off. You really got to build to all that. So by the time you get to these final moments of characters
Starting point is 00:10:24 choosing the path they want to walk on, like I love the ironic, just the irony of this kid just had a moment where he's looking at the woman getting on the bus and he has the choice. And the second he comes back, he's in a freaking chase. And he just says, he just, he's a safe bus crashing his car.
Starting point is 00:10:43 You can see the doubt. on his face that it ends on as Penguins like egging him on like yeah you did it you're in there you come back yeah you're in like he's just totally she's number one cheerleader and he's you could see the regret that's forming and that's that's one of the things like you mentioned the projecting that's also another thing it does really well is the line of dialogue that should be either sad as celebratory and celebratory is sad the line you're in it now to him is oh I'm in it now and to Penguin he's like yeah welcome I like like non-melodramatic this show is.
Starting point is 00:11:13 Yeah. Yeah, it could easily be. Even like some crime shows that I enjoy sometimes are a bit heavy hand. Like the mom thing. Like they didn't take the route where it could have been the melodrama about the mom like you know, disowning him. Yeah. Oh, it's so good. I need to look up one thing and make sure I was right about
Starting point is 00:11:29 Bliss because that's a 10 year plus ago storyline with Poison Ivy, if it's the one I remember correctly. But if that's where they're going, it's an exciting way to do an Easter egg. Exciting way to do it. And it's tied into Arkham. That makes me said they canceled their Arkham series because there's so much in this show that I think can be overlooked because of how natural everything feels like the way the cinematography is done you're just so engrossed and what's happening and you're just taking it all in at once versus a lot of
Starting point is 00:11:59 other shows where you're like okay this moment stands out because this moment is actually good this moment stands out this image looks good because this image is actually good compared to the rest it is a consistency that you're taking in as one big voice. Are you right? There is a drug. I can't find out of it's called Bliss or not, but it's from the run that's running right now by Woodrow Wilson. Wait, that's a president.
Starting point is 00:12:20 Willow Wilson. G. Willow Wilson. And they do weaponize her thing, but I'm trying to find out the name of it, and I'll know by next week. But I agree that the Arkham show is now up there with the Donald Glover Deadpool loss. Because, like, Arkham with this team,
Starting point is 00:12:33 I can't even imagine how incredible that would have been. At first, I was like, that's a lot of Batman World. they're trying to build. But then now that they've successfully pulled this off, oh, man, it will be actually if we have multiple shows building between movies with these four-year gaps we have.
Starting point is 00:12:47 Even like every two years a show and then every four years of Batman movie, just build it. It's Batman. And I just really love the dynamic between Penguin and Sophia. The way they have to like, every time you think they just got everything, you know, nipped in the butt.
Starting point is 00:13:04 And then something outside. It's averse expectation. the show. He does. Sometimes you can see a choice coming. Like, when he was driving up, I was like, okay, he's going to like turn around. Okay. But, you know, him abatting, Sophia, didn't see he coming? That whole same thing in the bathroom. We were both like,
Starting point is 00:13:18 he might kill him. He might actually kill. Look, look how alone they are. And I love the realism behind that writing. It was such, I think every scene again, like, like, it is a bit funny how this is the episode where Vic has to make a decision on whether or not he stays with Penguin or goes to California.
Starting point is 00:13:37 it's the one episode where Penguin is like love bombing the entire time like I really believe in you kid you're great son I never had I mean I love you does anyone told you I really think you need more love never loved anyone as frankly you're all I got stay in my house but I also have you seen funny people years ago this is a little bit like that Adam Sandler
Starting point is 00:13:58 Seth Rogan down there he pays him a grand a week yeah he pays of a grand a week I'm like you're gonna be my friend I need a friend That's what he's paying for. It's like saying to have a friend. And how heartbreak got is and that friend leaves. Yeah. It's like his assistant.
Starting point is 00:14:13 This is funny. It's funny. They have recreated funny people. Jet Appet tells the blueprint. This is what he's done. This is just funny people. Dude, I can't believe the amount of times that I should know there's no way they'll do blank. And then they make me think they might do blank.
Starting point is 00:14:27 Yeah. Like the scene in the bathroom. I'm like, there's no way he's going to kill him. He might kill him. The show subverts expectations while also being things you've seen before. And that's why I think it's doing that comic thing that I can't believe it's getting away with. because we've seen these stories but it's so good
Starting point is 00:14:38 and it looks great too it's beautiful and I love that the architecture of Gotham's unique I love that the club like mirrored I was talking about lighting but they do such a good job
Starting point is 00:14:47 making it feel like you're in a place I love Nolan's Batman trilogy but what drove me crazy was after Batman begins Gotham lost most of its identity and just felt like Chicago this is making Gotham feel like a place you can visit
Starting point is 00:14:59 and not a place that just exists it feels structured and intentional and alien to us but like a real place yeah and i like the opening too really showing the horrors of what riddler did oh that was so painful man this show's good yeah great show great show uh let us know in the comments below of what you're thinking uh comic fans let me know if you think this is g willow wilson's storyline with the poison ivy drug g willikers dray yeah not woodrow wilson that's a president that probably
Starting point is 00:15:26 did right bro wilson so great street in los angeles uh let me know in the comments below if you think this does tie into poison ivy with the mushrooms and stuff i'm sure there's uh you By the time this is out, I'm sure there's 72 YouTube channels going like, did you notice this history? I'm curious if they actually go that way or not. I'm really curious, but the Arkham tie-in when they mentioned it was made at Arkham, how's that going to relate? How did she find out this stuff?
Starting point is 00:15:48 Let us know, let's have a conversation in the chat below. Also, leave a like on your way out. Hit that subscription bell if you hadn't because we're going to be going to episode four in a week. I, this, again, I said it last time, and I said it week one. I thought this was going to be the best show of the year. It is living up to my impossible expectations. I'm so happy. Colt's Joe, Greg, told you so.
Starting point is 00:16:07 Yeah, this an Achaelite. Yeah, my two favorites of the year. An Acolyte did everything I wanted Andor to do, but better. Couldn't even say. Couldn't even say it. All right, we'll see you soon, Rejectation. Bye.
