Starting point is 00:00:00 I just mailchimp my marketing. You mailchimped your what? I mailedchimped my marketing with AI to create an effective marketing campaign in minutes. No, MailChimp and way. Yes, MailChimp in way. Now I can hyper-personalize my campaigns across email and SMS. You can do all that with MailChimp. What did I just MailChimp and say?
Starting point is 00:00:18 MailChimp your marketing with the number one AI powered email marketing and automation platform. Intuit MailChimp. Number one, based on publicly available data on competitors, customers. Plans vary. SMS available as add-ons. Visit MailChimp.com. A massage chair might seem a bit extravagant, especially these days, eight different settings, adjustable intensity, plus it's heated, and it just feels so good.
Starting point is 00:00:42 Yes, a massage chair might seem a bit extravagant, but when it can come with a car, suddenly it seems quite practical. The all-new 2025 Volkswagen Tiguane, packed with premium features like available massaging front seats, it only feels extravagant. With a major selection of the looks your kiddos love starting at just $4 in the Walmart app, a new school year means a stylish new them. Who knew? Find skater skirts and crocs that say, I'm casual but cool.
Starting point is 00:01:13 Sparkly sneakers that say, it's my classroom, you're just learning in it. And preppy polos that say I'm the teacher's pet, even if they're mommy's menace at home. Find their favorite styles starting at just $4 in the app. The Walmart you thought you knew is now new. That is going to do it for this episode. Well, it's not going to do it. That's what I'm going to do for the interview. You have a job to do.
Starting point is 00:01:35 Should we watch the episode? Let's watch the episode. Okay. We're going to watch the episode in three, two, one. Wow. Wow. Hi, Neer, what do you think? I don't get paid for this, Greg.
Starting point is 00:01:57 It's all about the money, Greg. Nothing until I have a car. Why are you showing me this 1099? I told you. Speak to my lawyer. Speak to your fiance. What do you think? You like it?
Starting point is 00:02:09 Yeah, but I missed the last episode, so I have no content. That's how you do. She did what, four, five, and seven. She said that's how she wanted to watch. She said, I don't care. I watch it in my order. I asked. I was enthralled.
Starting point is 00:02:24 Sad shit is sad. Log line. That's our new shirt, yes. It's the penguin's sad But I missed a lot of character development That is true I've seen Sophia's wardrobe change dramatically Which would have been the
Starting point is 00:02:42 The Ascent. Yeah Well, she's more Wednesday Adams now That's what I would tell our kids Little goth That's the Wednesday Adams of her Of our generation Right
Starting point is 00:02:52 There you go That's a take Unpaid take Damn it People don't do things He's here for money. That's the running joke seriousness. I, for our Spotify listeners,
Starting point is 00:03:07 this was episode seven of the Penguin, a little late. Oh, we're on Spotify now. We are. Oh, wow. When did that happen? In iTunes? We just say it.
Starting point is 00:03:17 So we may or may not be on that. We've been there for like a year. I'm like, it's really confusing to say it and we're not. Yeah, we're there for like a year. Oh, the penguin umbrella. I hadn't seen that yet. uh they're doing the after show aren't you always supposed to watch till the end and then you know there's a little nugget there's an after show we don't watch a car we got to film another show which just give you opinion
Starting point is 00:03:38 oh my opinion okay i was with you Greg uh what you're leading I'll go first uh voice of all uh I voice of all uh I really think there's a bunny there's a bunny rabbit there's a bunny rabbit little bunny rabbit out these two kids uh killed by the brother and uh uh It was darker. The death of the brother, I thought would be impactful. I didn't know there was more to uncover in a full episode. Like, this episode only moved the narrative of the present day, maybe a fourth of the episode. It was like three-quarters flashback.
Starting point is 00:04:13 And I wouldn't have anticipated with the way the show has been paced that the chronological order would jump back to that at this point. I think it's really smart. I think the penultimate episodes are often, especially at the way TV is structured now, the big action finale. and then the final episode's more of a day new mall it's more of a like picking up the pieces but we're uniquely poised to have that happen in the Batman 2 what did you say a day new mall a day new mall
Starting point is 00:04:36 it's French for the resolution after the conclusion so it's like the the epilogue or like that that feeling of resolve after the big climax you're so cool you know the new mall but I think but think about it like a lot of modern shows they're the second of last episode
Starting point is 00:04:52 and then the last episode doesn't feel as quite as big or the first half the episode is huge, and then it kind of settles, then you get your resolution. So I really liked the choice to do. Each episode has kind of taken a left when you think would go right.
Starting point is 00:05:05 I was expecting after the ascension of Gigante in the last episode and what Victor was going through and the crowbar, we still didn't even see the crowbar, he was, like, what we expected was... I mean, actually using the crowbar on... I mean, clearly he got bonked and head.
Starting point is 00:05:20 But, like, I thought that would be the episode. Yeah. As opposed to, like, they did a really cool time jump forward by, like, you know, 10 minutes. But then we lived most of the episode in the past. So we have one last chance to really think the Penguins piece of crap. So I wouldn't have expected this episode to be like Penguins A Piece of Crap flashback. I would have thought he would do something so disgusting in the finale that by the time you get to the Batman.
Starting point is 00:05:40 But as I was saying before, like the way the show connects the Batman 1 and 2, it allows for a totally different structure of television because the after effects of the finale now get to hit the Batman 2 that much stronger. Like you get to have a two-hour movie uniquely waiting for you. for that damel and also ascending action. So I really thought this was clever. I thought hating the penguin was going to be more on how he's treated Sophia. I thought it would be a betrayal of Victor. I didn't expect it to be the flashback and his inevitable betraying of Victor,
Starting point is 00:06:11 which I think is also going to come in episode eight. I thought the acting was fantastic. I think the casting was great in that kid. I think the stuff with the mom is so much more traumatic now that we've seen the context of it. I think we understand his entire belief system based off his relationship with his mom. and that's so much of psychology is like how were you raised your mom your dad like you go to a therapist a lot of it's like that childhood trauma i didn't expect the childhood trauma episode so i was really impressed i thought this was a brilliant episode i will probably call this my second favorite episode actually um after the fourth one yeah i wrote down penguin broke his mom like the everything you see about the mom i love the way this show sets up something on the surface and then is constantly peeling it
Starting point is 00:06:55 more, more, more. So the plot is constantly still dictated by internal characterization and motives. It's never just things happen. What's next? Yeah, it's never just what's going to happen while simultaneously being very much aware of how plots will unfold and subverting how that goes down without annoying the audience. Like it seemed the whole time we're like, mom's dead, mom's dead. You're showing us this intro with mom's dad.
Starting point is 00:07:20 She made it to the finale. Yeah, and it's like, but it's like we're predicting that. So, of course, they're not going to do that. But then they told us that it happened And it's like, no, my mind. Yeah. So good. But they, and I love how they still manage to drive home.
Starting point is 00:07:32 He's a guy such a dick. Like, he doesn't even like warn all this to after giving his whole team who literally saved his ass a few minutes ago. He doesn't even give them a heads up that there's a bomb. He's like, ah, school am I got to look out for myself. And he just jubes down into his brother's morgue. Yeah, and I love the characterization of, I mean, you said during the reaction of how, like, that is his origin tale, that, that moment in time.
Starting point is 00:07:54 they so much of the time with characters you find their core memories and this core memory is not something that is inflicted unto him this is a core memory of an action that he actually did unto others and how that has sort of dictated the way he has formed over time like the suppression of guilt of killing his brothers and then selfishly finding a way to covet his mom via through that but that experience just breaks his mom into this like fragile panic neurotic mess to control role and want to have hers and he's like yeah i want to give that to you and that gives him the power he always wanted like he has power over his mom now even like the dead body maroni's dead and he's still like i'm the guy and he's got to have it be like no not some sickness did it i got to i got to have the credit not yeah not he just won because of some he's dead he shoots him and carries the body out i love i i love like the characterization of what they've done with it with him because you think like the mom just like an old lady and maybe and it's the what i'm What I'm getting at is something, like, that question that Sophia was raising earlier is like,
Starting point is 00:08:59 he's a monster, but monsters are formed. And usually it's the parents who form the monster. Yeah. When it's like, this crazy sick child is the one who formed the mom. And that's the expectation we had from episode one. Yeah. When we met the mom, we both had that soprano's fear that it was just going to mirror that. Episode two, subverted that expectation of how the mom treated him.
Starting point is 00:09:18 And then by the end, you're like, oh, I don't know chicken or egg, what happened? And now we see finally that it's Oz. I mean, granted, like, yeah, mom. should be responsible. She's an adult. And clearly she raised him poorly. Yes. So, of course, at the same time,
Starting point is 00:09:31 there's a certain line where you're like, no, you just, you happen to bore the devil. And I'm sorry that happened. Yeah, so sorry to that. Yeah. Like, you just got this poor seed in you.
Starting point is 00:09:38 And I think that's just insanely brilliant, too. And how they also weave in, like, Penguin comic nod origins, like born in the sewers. And in a lot of ways that memory is him born in the sewers, the way how you keep pointing out,
Starting point is 00:09:50 like, looking at Fred Astaire, and the top of it, all these things about aesthetically. that the mom was drawn to, and I think it's just so smart. Wait, Greg, did you catch that? She mentioned Ginger Rogers. Ginger Rogers? Is she of the Fred Astaire era?
Starting point is 00:10:03 Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers were dance partners for 10 films. Yes, that's right. My wife was obsessed with that she's showing me one of their movies. And the whole thing about dance partners. But that juxtaposes the Fred Astaire movie watching in the beginning and how close he was to his mom to her basically saying, like, she is as a partner. As your historical commentator for this. Contributed.
Starting point is 00:10:25 Oh, look at that. You don't get paid. Nope, no money. Not today. Finale contract. Season two. But also the element of the dance partner, which the episode two, no, three, when he talks to her about his mom dying, the whole episode is about let's dance.
Starting point is 00:10:42 And he uses the cover of his mom dying to bring him closer to Sophia. So I like the idea of Ginger Rogers coming in as a dance partner metaphorically, but also she has been the whole time. That's the only person. I don't believe that Oz would have given up the drug trade, but that's the only person. but that's the only person that would make me go, maybe. And I really loved, I see you wrote Theo. I really loved that.
Starting point is 00:11:00 Yeah. Theo's character. I've embraced the fact that I think I need a pen and notepad now. Yeah. I think I've reached that point in my life. Theo, not his character name, but Theo Rossi's character, we've been wandering through the episodes. Like, an ongoing trend has been like, is it going to be a slow burn reveal for his impact,
Starting point is 00:11:17 or is it going to be a click moment, or is it going to be like he has to do an action? This was also the episode for me where he secured why he's this fun Harley Quinn inversion to her Joker to me and the way he's able... Or like a Vanessa Wilson Fis. A hundred percent. Yeah. But I like the psychiatrist to
Starting point is 00:11:33 the person trapped in Arkhammeda. Yes, that makes more. That is so much. Like there are commonly partners to powerful mob figures, but rarely are they the power dynamic where he likes that she's stronger than him, but he's still manipulating what he wants out of it in certain ways. And to me, him being the
Starting point is 00:11:49 psychiatrist is obviously the Harley Quinn like direct on the nose, but I love that he knows how to talk to in a way that no one else does. He knows how to support her. He knows how to, like, help her with what she needs in that moment. And I love that there's, like, literally a shadow over his face
Starting point is 00:12:02 of, like, what are his intentions now that he's in? Yeah, and he'll do anything he can to support the darkness in her that he believes to be her true identity. And, like, fostering that to come out bigger to, like, she was going to give up. She was ready to throw in the towel. And he's like, no, no, what if we'll kill everybody.
Starting point is 00:12:16 Maybe kill that kid. Yeah. And the way he carries himself so, like, fun and, like, he's just got, like, a... I mean, it's like, that's been obvious that he's been doing, at this whole time but I don't think it like a really emotionally really sung
Starting point is 00:12:27 until this episode for me I'm like okay this is when it's really hitting for me what he's doing because it'd be fun on rewatch to see some of the little details because it's definitely like he got the most screen time this episode to do that thing he does and I think it works because it's it's her coming to terms with I am putting up another act as this
Starting point is 00:12:43 Gigante thing yeah I'm doing yet another I love that you called that and he's that her and he's still I know there's something that just felt like artificial about it to me and the way how he goes to her and is still he's not being he's not being Harley Quinn
Starting point is 00:12:56 Joker too he's like no I'm still here to support you even in this new discovery you have and help you get to the truth and she said the big jacket and exposed her scars yeah like I like the visual
Starting point is 00:13:07 of her embracing her and that being like removing that's the jacket of her mother's yeah and I like the nuance too with the Gia scene of how he does she goes there to essentially manipulate her and then sort of realizing
Starting point is 00:13:21 like I am being the monster that people have done unto me simultaneously. And now I need to nurture you in this moment. I'm going to give you a dose of reality. They were fucked up. They sucked up. They sucked. And it's better that they're gone and you could start a new life, but she's also talking to
Starting point is 00:13:37 herself at that time. There's so much layers to that. And I think this is a very multi-layered show. Ways that are more deep than I expected. Yeah, it's pretty incredible. I love it. It's probably my second favorite episode, I think. Yeah, this was really special. I really like that we have one episode left and there's so much to happen. I'm so excited that I have
Starting point is 00:13:53 no idea how it's going to go. I'm more excited for this Matt Reeves universe than I've ever been. And this was the show that I bothered Greg about for a full year. And it is living up to it. It really is. And that's good because I was really like, I thought it was going to be great. I didn't think it was going to be like Breaking Bad meets Daredevil. Something special.
Starting point is 00:14:11 Make DC great again. Yeah, Madka. We'll see you soon. Thanks, guys. Leave a comment below. Let us know what you think of this episode. Hit that like. Hit that subscription bell for the finale next.

Starting point is 00:16:20 It's not worth it. It's not worth it. Put it on a hard drive. A flash drive. A thumb drive. I'm making the Batman references while you do the up-to-date penguin. I know. It's very up-to-date.
Starting point is 00:16:32 You can tell, you hear it. Yeah. If you weren't watching and you're just listening, you'll be like, is that Colin Farrell in there? It's definitely not. The guy who does Rick, Rick and what he is. It's 100% Colin Farrell. Listen up.
