James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad (2021) explodes onto the screen with his signature mix of chaotic humor, ultra-violence, and heart, delivering one of the wildest rides in the DCEU. A standalone sequel to David Ayer’s 2016 Suicide Squad, this film follows Task Force X as Amanda Waller (Viola Davis, How to Get Away with Murder, Fences) assembles a team of supervillains for a near-suicide mission on the island nation of Corto Maltese. Leading the charge is Bloodsport, played by Idris Elba (The Wire, Luther, Pacific Rim), a reluctant antihero who must learn to trust his ragtag squad. Highlights include Harley Quinn’s dazzling escape sequence, the bloody beach massacre introduction, the shocking early deaths of several squad members, Peacemaker and Bloodsport’s hilarious (and brutal) rivalry, and the insane showdown against the colossal alien kaiju Starro the Conqueror. Blending outrageous comedy with shocking violence and surprising heart, The Suicide Squad has become one of the most beloved DCEU films. Starting point is 00:02:34 Also, special thanks to the fine folks over at Preper for editing them on these highlights, especially this film. I'm sure it was a task. We appreciate all of their hard work. And we are going to get right into the questions. I'm sure we have quite a fear. We do. Yes.
Starting point is 00:02:48 Okay. So let's get right into this. All right, from Jackson, Ryan. thank you so much for being a royal reject and for the question do you feel like this film has a more a more cohesive flow of a story than suicide squad yes
Starting point is 00:03:02 okay yes I do too I think the first film really first of all I didn't think the first film was very cohesive just in general but I also think the first film relies a lot on exposition you know it shows more than it uh excuse me it tells more
Starting point is 00:03:18 than it shows and I think this film like has a lot of emotional depth uh I love the the complexity of the themes. I love the characters. I love the storyline. I think there's just so much more, and it's also a lot more of a fun film.
Starting point is 00:03:33 It's got a great flow to it just in general. I think there's just so everything is better about this film that I personally felt. I think Tara felt the same way as well. The pacing and the tone of this movie is really vibrant and it's timed out really well with amazing performances. When the exposition was in this film, it was planted at the right time.
Starting point is 00:03:54 it was absolutely necessary and made sense to the story. And when we needed it, which is just good writing. So yes, yes, yes, yes. Michael Medina and Catheria. Andrew and Tara, hello, you wonderful humans. Hope you're both doing well, big hugs. How do you feel like this compared to the first suicide squad? Did you have a favorite new character?
Starting point is 00:04:22 I really enjoy John Cena as piece. and it made complete sense from his performance and popularity that they gave him his own show. We kind of just went over the comparisons of the first film. In regards to favorite new character, I really loved Bloodsport a lot. I think, again, he brought a lot of emotional residency, especially the storyline with his daughter, which I guess you can make kind of a comparison to Dead Shy. I just think this film went a little deeper into that. I think the emotional heartbeat, though, of this film and my favorite character personally was
Starting point is 00:04:53 Cleo? Ratcatcher? Ratcatcher? I don't know how to say. I don't know how to say. I pronounce it. Sorry. I just, I love the whole backstory with her father and then, like, how she just saw the goodness in everyone and really embrace the found family that she had there. And again, her moral compass that she had as well. And she was personal. She was my favorite character. What about you? She was great. I loved her. And I really liked that she. taught Nannua, Kingchark, about friendship. So I loved him. Number one, I'm a big Stallone fan. Huge. Like, I used to have my duvet cover used to just be a face of Rocky in black and white.
Starting point is 00:05:38 I'm not joking. So hearing that, you know, Stallone is obviously the voice. And I loved him. He's, it's a good, he sort of lightens it up with the comedy, with his one words. And then when he finds his dumb friends, I actually get like emotional and especially at the end when Cleo sort of like lies on him. I'm like, oh, it's like true friendship. He's a little smile on his face.
Starting point is 00:06:04 And you wouldn't think that through, you know, a film that you would actually be able to really feel for him, especially based off the beginning. But this film does a really great job of doing that, which each and every character. And that's what makes it a great film. You feel for them, you're with them in their story so that when little things like that happen, you're like, oh! True, I agree with everything.
Starting point is 00:06:31 And I think, too, just one, another little comparison to the other film. I think the other film really relied on once we got to the point of like that bar scene, which I really liked in the first film, like once they had embraced the found family there, it's like it didn't feel earned. And in this film, like, because they really took their time,
Starting point is 00:06:49 all the character moments were so good. And you got some, good backstory whether they showed it or whether the exposition was really good and they really used it sparingly but they knew when to do it and I think because this film had time to breathe and we had a lot of good moments with the characters and the team because it was so well earned it it's spots and we really cared about the team and like you felt like they would do anything for each other and they embraced each other in the end and they really were a family in the end.
Starting point is 00:07:21 Agreed. Thank you so much for the question, Michael. All right, from Pierre the Reject. Hello, Tara and Andrew. Thanks for reacting to
Starting point is 00:07:30 one of my favorite DCU films. What did you think of Idris Elba as Bloodsport? I thought it was great. I loved him. I mean, Idris Elba
Starting point is 00:07:40 is a phenomenal actor, but also he brings emotional depth to like even anything, just like when he sees one thing, especially when he looks at Cleo and Peacemaker is standing over her to kill her
Starting point is 00:07:54 like he can do so much with just a look at his eyes I mean and I feel like a lot of these actors can but Ider Elba has such a charismatic presence on screen that you really read it in him you're like yeah he's he's going to protect her and then it flips when she protects him I know it was beautiful and it was just it was great and honestly the argument
Starting point is 00:08:18 with his daughter in prison was so good it was so great it was so great how brutal it got but then at the end how through them yelling was also the comedy came out it was great
Starting point is 00:08:33 I mean he's always great he's definitely yeah again once again agree with everything you say he's really able to balance emotional depth with the comedic tone I was like again also
Starting point is 00:08:44 I shouldn't be surprised by anything Idris Elba does because he's such a versatile actor. He's really, as you said, he's charming and charismatic as well when he needs to be. But I think, too, and maybe this is, I'm misreading the interpretation, but I think he saw a lot of Cleo. He saw a lot of goodness in her, like he, kind of like in his daughter, and, you know, wanted to protect her like he did his daughter.
Starting point is 00:09:08 And in a way he couldn't with his own. Right. And also, too, I liked his storyline in general with his character. He was a very reluctant leader, and that was a really good arc that he had. and also too like a father is like a leader in the household in its own right as well as the team that he had so i i just thought it was a very again i know i use the word earned but i really thought his arc was truly earned by the end that he embraced uh this team and becoming the leader and protecting uh each squad member especially with cleo and also the way he petted sebastian because he had it was totally understandable why he had this phobia of rats uh as explained to him in the the exposition that his father put him in a shed or so yeah I saw that too thank you
Starting point is 00:09:52 that his father put him in some kind of a shed or something like that with rats so totally understandable this traumatic experience and they've all got you know trauma in their lives so I again I just loved all these different types of arcs that this character went through in the film and earned towards the end
Starting point is 00:10:08 so Idris was fantastic in the character I loved it so love you so much who's great thank you so much Pierre Jay Rush! favorite character in the movie okay mine is weasel at the very end is what jay said we've already answered that previously i did also love weasel at the end and his run his run was very funny yeah i'm glad also he did survive because i was tar and i were talking about at the beginning in real time during the reaction we're like why did weasel jump into the water if he can't swim but he
Starting point is 00:10:37 probably just doesn't have any survival instincts and also to be fair to weasel too it's probably extremely dark out there and you didn't even realize he was jumping into water yeah so but I'm so glad I'm glad he survived and also he didn't have to face any of the crazy action because it was straight up like a war zone out there so it was probably for it for his own benefit that that all happened little weasel made it yeah jaden Rhodes thank you jaden for being a royal reject and the question I love this movie I cannot wait to see the reaction but I'm curious what do you all think of starro as the villain I personally love it because it's so comic booky and hope we get more wild villains like this in the new
Starting point is 00:11:17 DCU. I mean, I thought it was great. It was very sci-fi. It was very horror-esque. So, yeah, you mean, and I like to, like, usually, I've expressed this to Terry and you guys throughout season four of Stranger Things, especially with Vecna, that I
Starting point is 00:11:33 personally like villains that can express themselves and have a voice. So I do like that Starro was able, once he was able to possess people, he could speak through them. So I thought that was a cool aspect of Starro. And it's crazy, too, Tara, because I actually felt simple, even though I didn't want him to live anymore, but I felt bad for Star-O-2 in a sense that he was just up in space, mining his own business, and they took him, experimented on him for 30 years. So the fact that James Gunn could make me, you know, not only resonate, but make me feel bad for this thing that was killing, you know, and like going to probably wipe out the planet if we didn't stop it.
Starting point is 00:12:15 I think that that's really good writing when you can feel sympathy for something and understand where it's coming from. So I thought it was a great villain personally. Again, sorry, not to compare or contrast, but it is part of the same franchise and it's a sequel, I guess, or a soft reboot,
Starting point is 00:12:31 but I thought it was a much better villain than enchantress, better choice personally. Oh, yeah, totally. I think it was like, it's new and inventive. I do agree with the comic book feel. It's also very colorful and weird to look at. It's something we've been, never seen before on film it's like sure we've seen enchantress and witchy people and all that but like
Starting point is 00:12:51 we've never seen a giant starfish who duplicates itself and like sucks onto the faces like you see an alien like that's wild um and i really i really like that i think what made it um at the end is one of the the starfish people the last line just saying i was happy just floating and looking at the stars and that is what like kills you when you hear it right you're like oh man this this starfish has been fucked with like seriously you guys have messed with this poor starfish and now it's just like dude i was happy and now i want to kill all of you because you've experimented on me and you wouldn't stop so i don't blame it i'm glad that we stopped it because i don't i think that the obviously star
Starting point is 00:13:42 of the villain would have not would have not quit of course um but you guys get what I mean so we're siding on with both on on both sides and there was a lot of that there was the same with between peacemaker and
Starting point is 00:13:57 um flag that I was like I kind of agree with flag that information should get out but I also agree with peacemaker of like yeah let's just not let's not do that because that's going to cause mad panic everywhere they don't really need to know and this movie did a lot of that sort of back and forth
Starting point is 00:14:15 with your heart, with your mind, with your moral code, and that's what makes it a good film. And that's also one of the themes I feel of the film government hypocrisy. And like, yeah, they sent in a team to do that. But then when like we saw that Starro was destroying everything and Amanda Waller's like, no, we're good. Cordo Motis, we don't care about them.
Starting point is 00:14:33 Go ahead. It's like, wow, really? Right. So, but I'm glad that the people that worked for Amanda Waller, like we've had enough after everything we've heard you say and express yourself and now you're just telling them to go away and let innocent children and people die so yeah fascinating i agree rejignation as many of you know i got very serious about my health this year since january i've dropped nearly 50 pounds and a little over 10% body fat and when one is committed like that

Thank you, HelloFresh, for supporting the world with a healthier lifestyle. ZBKN, so ZBKN. James Gunn is a master at shooting the perfect songs
Starting point is 00:16:43 for his films. I would agree with that. It's one of the reasons I love Guardian so much. Each song messes so well with each scene. Either of you have a song that you liked or even just a scene that was made better by a song. P.S. Mine was in there walking the rain to, hey, by Pixies. so good
Starting point is 00:16:59 I really love when you just a jiggleo That was it That was my That was my Yeah I'm playing And that was like
Starting point is 00:17:09 The Harley Quinn And she goes through it And that whole song Played And that song Has, if you guys Listen to that song It starts out
Starting point is 00:17:17 With like Just a jiggleo And then it's like Everywhere goes off And then it starts To like pick up At the end And he used even
Starting point is 00:17:24 The end part Which I love And I love The color palette in that scene too. Everything just matched. It was just a perfect blend of everything and the way she was able to kick ass to and just it
Starting point is 00:17:35 also symbolizes what she was going through and feeling in that scene too. Like James Gunn is just he's a master at characters but he's a master too just to go off this question at really knowing what song to pick in each scene and what symbolizes what the character is going through
Starting point is 00:17:51 and feeling in that scene. Agreed. Yeah. Thank you so much for the question. All right. From Residence as someone who didn't get to keep up with many of the DC films I found this movie to be a blast question is there a character from the old DC universe that you hope gets a better portrayal in the new DC universe huh that's a good question um I mean we really liked the Wonder Woman the first film we really liked a lot and we really like the new Superman film and I like Ben Afflex Batman a lot and I like Ben Affleck's Batman a lot I like that, man. That's what I was just thinking. And I like the Flash a lot in the Snyder cut. Well, you don't like the Joker.
Starting point is 00:18:34 So you would want that to be a different actor. Thank you. That's why we're a team here. You're welcome. I would agree with that. But I did love the Joker in the Dark Night a great amount. But I think that's a different. But that's a different, different DC universe, right?
Starting point is 00:18:48 But if we're talking about this previous DC universe, I would get rid of them. I would definitely go with the Joker 100%. Is there a character for you? Would you say the same thing? or is there a different one? I mean, there's kind of not. Like, in me thinking it through, I'm like, I kind of really liked everybody.
Starting point is 00:19:07 I don't, that's a good question to say, like, a better portrayal. Mm-hmm. I don't think anybody, like, maybe the Flash. I would say in the solo Flash movie, The Flash. Yeah. But I liked him a lot in the Snyder cut. Totally.
Starting point is 00:19:25 I don't know. That's a hard one, residency. See, I appreciate your question, but I'll think about it. Thank you so much. All right. Mark Leach. Hey, guys, glad you're acting in this film. So one of my favorites has James Gunn's style all over it. I feel it mixes his humor and how great he is with underdog characters like Guardians of the Galaxy.
Starting point is 00:19:43 With the grossness, he is used to from the time with trauma and doing Slither, another great film. My question to you, if you were part of the suicide squad, what would you want your superpower to be? I feel like it has to be a bit, there has to be ridiculousness to it. What would I want my superpower to be? Okay, she could control, I'm trying to think. What if I want my superpower to be? Uh, I would want to be invisible.
Starting point is 00:20:11 That way I could just like, if there was like craziness ensuing all over, I could just like get anywhere I need to go and not be shot at, hopefully. I guess invisible or fly one of those two, maybe super fast, any of those three, I guess. I don't know. Okay.
Starting point is 00:20:27 I want my hands to be flame throwers. Each finger is a flamethrower. And maybe I can shoot like Molotov cocktails out of my eyes. That'd be cool. And what would come out of my mouth? Let's think about it. Something that has to do with fire. Oh, like I could probably do like, you see in a circus where if I open my mouth,
Starting point is 00:20:54 they take out the thing. that's on fire. It's like a sword thing. I could do that too. That would be my whole, that would be my vibe. That definitely would work in the spirit of this.
Starting point is 00:21:06 And you asked it to be ridiculous. Yeah, you're welcome. Mine was just too simplistic. Tara is a lot better at this thing. Thank you so much for the question. All right. Final question here from Chase Lee. Thank you, Chase for being a royal reject
Starting point is 00:21:20 and for asking the question. If you needed to put a team together for any particular reason, saving a life. Fighting Nazis, battling aliens, or playing a friendly game of basketball against each other. What five non-comic book characters from any movie would you choose knowing some of them might not make it out? That's a tough. Yeah, to think on the spot, non-comic book characters, okay, I would go with, I'm trying to think of an Arnold Schwarzenegger character that's really tough.
Starting point is 00:21:50 I guess I'd go with The Terminator. I'll go with Rocky. Okay, so let's just combine forces on this. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So you've got Rocky. I've got The Terminator. Let's go with Rambo. Okay, your turn.
Starting point is 00:22:00 Yeah, that's, oh, so we can pick sly twice. Okay, so we'll go. Yeah, well, it's different characters. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay, okay, 11 from Stranger Things. Oh, good choice. Yeah, that was good. So now we got one more.
Starting point is 00:22:12 Okay, so we've got a supernatural person. I'm trying to think of one more. Let's go with John McLean. Or should we go with Ethan Hunt? Your choice, John McLean or Ethan Hunt? They both make it out of impossible situations, although he does the mission. We got to go, Ethan Hunt. Okay.
Starting point is 00:22:26 Hunt. That's our team of five. Let us know what your team of five. And if you approve of ours, I want to know, guys. Anyways, I really love this movie. We got to get going here. We got to get out of here. Just 10 seconds here because Tara needs to know with the rotten tomatoes. It'll take five seconds, I promise. I just want to know what you think. Tara. Go ahead. Oh, okay. So I'll go critics gave it in 81 and I'll say audience 86. 81 and 86. We got, let's see, 90% from the critics. Awesome. And what did you say for the audience? I said 86. 82 from the audience.
Starting point is 00:23:01 Well done. They did it. Yes. It's great film. This is probably one of our favorite BCEU films that we have watched so far. So I really enjoyed it. I'm not sure yet what we are doing next, but it will be up on the channel at some point soon. So be on the lookout for that.
