Let's get into it
I feel like a lot of this should have happened like an episode at least to go
what so much so much is happening
this is a lot to go into the final episode of the series
wow that's crazy oh my god
That was a wild one, though.
That was a wild one.
Let's keep it just very direct.
Keep it direct.
I'm concerned.
I'm still enjoying what's happening.
I am concerned going into the finale.
We have a lot of stuff happening and a lot of different storylines, some interesting things, some wild things.
Five in Lila, third, late in the game, fourth quarter love triangle.
What?
I don't know.
Well, we got, we got an hour and nine minutes to wrap all this crap up.
So, we're going to see.
Greg, how are you feeling?
I mean, I really like the episode a lot.
Like, it's really fun.
And if I can just do a little mind trick to myself and not look at this as the second to last episode of the whole series.
If I can just isolate it as an episode itself, if this was just another episode and a season of,
season of umbrella academy i i love a lot of it like we pointed out a lot of its weird choices
that they do throughout where they seem to be kind of selective about um alison's powers and
and uh i don't know there's like little details here and there that we were like why isn't this
happen how come five never noticed the umbrella on his boss's tat uh uh uh wrists you know
how is the eagle rips now yeah he was the a part of his power said something got like jacked what the
else happened the the the the the storyline in the time like i like the choice to play with fire that
much with the audience of the affair because i always thought that there was a little bit of
a sexual chemistry with five and lila as i'm sure a lot of other people did totally have a total fight
fight scene in the last season where you know she's like naked in the bath room you know they're fighting
each other yeah so there's a lot of similarities between them and for them to have this like
affair out of time feels very much like the affair that lila and five would have uh for a place
out of their timeline so i like the choice of that um the storyline of diego on the path
to realizing like what he actually does have at home is a pretty good thing i don't really know
what they're doing with luther but you know he's funny um he's just there he's just funny we haven't really
knowledge of Sloan thing he's just there and the story with klaus getting out um i don't really
understand the point of that other than the realization of the immediacy arc of this season with
him and and um alison after having their blowout fight that they actually do love each other
and so like they had a blowout fight like two episodes ago and i guess the arc of them is
realizing they do need each other and are there for each other i guess
um sure good fine and the story i mean with the twist with the with uh mrs hargraves
wanting the cleanse to happen like a lot of that does clear and clear up a lot of other things
yeah especially with the marigold and how she had possession of it i think what they're doing
with victor hargraves is really good i thought victor had a really good like action hero scene
when saving hargraves didn't save anybody else but saved saved hargraves and and the lines that
he was given i thought delivered that really well
It is the complexity, though, of, you know, some stuff does feel like if this season was longer, we would be having a little bit more.
Like, you introduced the concept of a train that goes to alternate timelines and you don't do anything with exploring the alternate timelines is honestly a really disappointing thing in Umbrella Academy.
Like, that is, I don't know if we're going to do that like in the next episode where they just like start hopping through and just having a really fun time or whatever.
But to do like six years and I understand like at the point is not really about.
one of the other timelines, it's about their bonding and relationship. And I thought it worked. I thought
the montage overlapping the time was really effective. And I bought into that they would form a
romance and a bond, this affair. I bought into that. It doesn't seem like unnatural that would
happen between them. It is the concept of like, wow, what a great concept. And you don't get to
watch any of the adventure that leads to that. I think that's a really disappointing aspect of it. And
Whereas I think another season of a Merrill Academy might have actually done something with that.
And I don't understand.
I don't really get the point of the Clough story.
I feel like they needed something for him to do.
And I'm really not understanding what the point of this journey is with getting back involved with this criminal and putting him in this, you know, medium prostitution thing.
Like, I don't understand.
Like, those aspects are like really weird and questionable to me to do on your penultimate.
And then to introduce this on your penultimate with the affair, I'm like, how do you possibly resolve the emotionality of that in the final?
Like, I can't wrap my head around that when there's so many other things going on.
I think both this discussion and as we've been watching yet, I realized two things.
One, and I could be wrong because we haven't seen the final episode yet.
But one, the six episode run, that was not their decision.
That was Netflix's decision.
And at first I was like, this is my feeling.
But as time has gone, I'm like, this shit needed to be longer.
And they probably couldn't go through altered timelines because Netflix didn't want to give them the money.
That's really what I think happened.
And two, I think Disney Plus has been the living proof of that over and over again.
But to my knowledge, this is the only Netflix show that's done it.
The six episode model does not work.
You need at least eight episodes to really flesh everything out.
And again, I reserve judgment for me to be wrong.
wrong because we have not seen the final episode.
It is the longest episode of the series with an hour and nine minutes.
It's not that much.
It's like 10 more minutes.
Unless they just start jumping through time, like mad time jumps.
Yeah.
We just got a lot of ground to cover.
And I feel like a lot of this stuff until we've seen how it's resolved itself,
feels kind of like filler.
Like the stuff with Allison doesn't make a lot of sense.
The stuff with Klaus, they're like, we just don't know what to do with this guy.
So we're just going to put him in a box and then put them in a cell.
for two episodes and then they don't really know what to do with luther either i think the stuff
that works because he didn't really save himself i thought like i thought there would be like some
arc with him saving himself but again i think it's some arc with him and alison and realizing
that you know even with the powers in him that they do love each other but the lack i guess but the
lack of clarity is not even though even if that is it is even if that is what it is it doesn't ring
as satisfying. Also, just, I don't know, it felt the whole thing with, we know the fact that he's
immortal and then the music implying this race against time element with him being in the box
and them saving him. Yeah. Feels disingenuine and feels a little manipulative because we know
that he's not going to die. Yeah, there's no real stakes. There's no stakes there. There's no life or death
stakes for him there. Yeah. Exactly. So it's like, you know as long as they're at the graveyard and
they know which tombstone to go to, you're like, okay, as long as they find that tombstone,
they're fine as long as they just go to the grave
they're fine and now alice is having like telekinesis and mind control
but they're just establishing this late in the game just feels so strange to me
and i don't want to sound like i'm complaining all the time because i will say okay
and no and they don't really do too much with it you know like in terms of like super
powering her up there's nothing real like it's just like selective moments there's no
narrative purpose for it's just what the plot needs it to be in this moment yeah i do feel
like a trim down happen i really thought the first like three episodes were gangbusters same those are
really solid and now that we've reached this point i'm like there's a hodgepodge of shit going on
and i i have no idea how the hell you confidently just summarize all this because the thing about it is
it doesn't feel like a penultimate episode it doesn't feel like the episode before a series finale no you feel like
you need at least like three minimum to wrap this stuff there's no way because yeah they even like
start rushing through the timeline events with Five and Lila there.
And like they rush through beats on there.
So stuff is already feeling rushed.
Because we have, we paired up the siblings and we have the stuff with Gene and Gene and David Cross.
So we have like, what, like five or six different storylines that we have to wrap up that haven't culminated to something bigger.
Granted, like half of the storylines have to do with the umbrella effect and like that organization.
or what not.
Yeah.
But yeah,
it just doesn't feel like
it's in this place
where it is coming together.
And I think part of the debate too
with Lila and Five
that is kind of upsetting me
is they don't seem to care at all
about helping out their family
and saving them from the inevitable doom
of the,
I forgot what it's called,
whatever Jennifer and Ben make.
Oh, the cleanse.
The cleanse.
Yeah, yeah.
Yeah, and the whole reason
they went back in the first place
was to save the childhood Ben and Jennifer.
in an alternate timeline.
But it seems like they're just going to abandon that and go back to the main timeline,
which makes the whole point of this side mission so they can have a love triangle
because they never even came close to achieving their original intention in the first place.
I have no idea how they're going to do it, but it does not sound like it'll be narratively satisfied.
We're doing so good in the first three.
I'm very interested, though.
don't get me wrong
I am so curious
as to what the hell
they're going to do
oh man
because we've got a lot to do
in such a short amount of time
yeah
like is this reminiscent of like
the Marvel shows to you in that sense
a little bit
yeah yeah absolutely
yeah no definitely but
Marvel usually doesn't have like
Marvel's usually trying to end a season
and it's usually a few characters
this is like a lot of characters
this is like a giant ensemble of characters and plot lines and and I'm like I'm not even really concerned about the main threat at hand which is the cleanse
the cleanse is supposed to be the big doom threat because I'm like I don't think about it until we're cutting to them you know
because yeah with the at least with the Google the Google Blitz that was something that was like a perm like a permeating threat throughout that season yeah it loomed over everything exactly but it's funny because I don't know if it's
Because the actors just met, I started to feel that thing you were talking about where, like, oh, the actors between Beneford don't have the greatest chemistry.
But I felt the chemistry between a five and Lila.
Like, I bought that they were together for seven years.
Yeah, no, me too.
I thought they were great.
That's what I mean.
I like them together.
Yeah, I think their stuff and Victor and Hargrave stuff was probably the best part of the episode for me.
Oh, no.
Absolutely.
I completely agree with you on that.
Like, the character's the one is really focusing on elevating or furthering character relationships and having these emotional stuff.
stakes there. It succeeds in spades, but it's just...
The CIA stuff is so weird.
It's so weird. It literally felt like five was like, we don't know what to do with these
characters. We're going to pawn them off to do something else. And then the plot did that too.
And then they were like, we don't know what to do with them here.
I guess we'll make them fight the CIA because I don't know, Tweedle D and Tewil
up here just needs something to do. And then when they're fighting the CIA, the other people
in the CIA who they're in the room with help out...
Diego and Luther, but I'm like, why don't you guys assume that Diego and Luther are the bad guys?
They're the ones you just met.
And like you said earlier, no one, this guy has guns.
Yeah.
Oh, yeah, it's an earth thing.
I think they would allow that.
I don't know if there's something about the CIA where they don't allow you to keep your, your weapon on you when you're walking around the facilities or something.
Oh, maybe, maybe.
But I don't know.
They didn't make that clear.
Oh, God.
I'm, listen, I still enjoy watching the show.
I love all the actors.
Yeah, I love watching.
It's always like when you look back, we're like, well, wait a minute.
I was realizing some of it in the moment, but like as we're talking about it, because
it's funny, we started this review.
I like, yeah, I like this episode.
And the more you go into it, you're like, wait, but this thing and this thing.
It's always fun.
It's always fun, like, when you're immediately watching it.
And then when you, like, think about it more, you're like, oh, wait, there's so many things
that I'm questioning now.
Yeah, I'm in question, Terry.
We'll wait till the very last episode, but I, I, my hopes are, I am just hanging on to
hope right now. I have nothing else but hope.
Same. Are we going to find out what happened
to Sloan? Yeah, what the hell?
That's such like a big
part of the last season. Right.
He literally left like the finale
looking for her and we haven't addressed
it at all. But hey,
we got an episode left, so we're going to find out. Maybe. I don't know.
Oh, boy.
This is definitely an interesting one.
All right. We're going to shoot the finale on another day.
He had a little bit of a rest of here to work
on some other stuff right now.
Yeah.
actual editing
but thank you guys for being here
keep a lookout for a reaction
of the finale
see you guys
