Tara Erickson & Roxy Striar react to Train to Busan (2016), the acclaimed Korean zombie horror thriller directed by Yeon Sang-ho (Seoul Station, Peninsula). The film stars Gong Yoo (Squid Game, The Silent Sea) as Seok-woo, a father traveling with his daughter Soo-an (Kim Su-an – A Little Princess) on a high-speed train to Busan when a sudden viral outbreak unleashes chaos. Along the way, they join other passengers fighting to survive, including fan-favorite Ma Dong-seok (Don Lee – The Roundup, Eternals) as tough yet big-hearted Sang-hwa, Jung Yu-mi (Kim Ji-young: Born 1982) as his pregnant wife Seong-kyeong, and Choi Woo-shik (Parasite) as a young baseball player. Kim Eui-sung (The King) rounds out the cast as the ruthless CEO Yon-suk. Iconic moments include the train station outbreak, Ma Dong-seok’s heroic fight scenes, the dark tunnel battles, and the tear-jerking finale that made the movie a global sensation. Starting point is 00:01:32 More on them in just a bit. Are you ready for this? Dara, I'm ready. All right, if you're ready, now that we have a new table and you guys can see all of our plethora of stuff. All of our stuff. Count us in before we start. Let's do it.
Starting point is 00:01:48 Three, two, one. I clicked it. I cannot with that movie. That was fucking crazy. Holy shit, dude. Holy shit. It says, did you like train to Busan? My God.
Starting point is 00:02:07 Didn't just like it. Loved it. That was, dude. That, like, wrecks me at the end, dude. Yeah, no crap, dude. Oh, my God. Holy shit. I was not expecting.
Starting point is 00:02:24 that but that that's some good writing right there can't Tara that is some good writing like just I cannot right now wow wow wow all right sack up rocks that's foggy in my glasses wow okay here we go let me try to do my job for a second yep um this is the rejection we just watch train to buson if you're on apple spotify five stars if you're on youtube thumbs up um leave a comment i'm sure you guys love this movie as much as we do it's like one of the greatest movies i've ever seen my entire life uh thank you prepper for helping edit us down sorry for the period of time where i dropped the f bomb four thousand times i couldn't i was pissed i was pissed and i stay and i stay pissed totally um follow us at real rejects yes and i believe this was
Starting point is 00:03:23 added last minute, so I'm just looking to see if they were able to ask questions. I don't think they did. So what Tara is talking about is typically if you are a patron, you are able to ask questions to us if you guys didn't know that already. It's a great perk of being a patron. Okay, all right,
Starting point is 00:03:39 let's talk about. Anyway, let's show. Here we go. Thank you guys for sitting through that as we tried to figure this out. My brain is scrambled eggs right now because I was already in a tough place today. And then I watch just like about the saddest movie of all time just now with you guys. Because Tara, I think we're on the exact same page, but just to say it out loud, how did you feel about the film?
Starting point is 00:03:58 I mean, 15 out of 10, it's phenomenal writing, phenomenal pacing, great character development. Even like you said, you were like, we've already gotten to sort of know these characters in the train and without us realizing, without a lot of exposition, without just good freaking moments, good direction. and then we go through this journey with this little girl and her dad and finding a new mom, which obviously she's going to need. I guess we don't know about her mom, though, because she's not picking up, but she was in Busan, so when Busan seems to be maybe okay. So in my dream of dream worlds, Tara, pregnant woman, mom who wasn't picking up, and girl, the four of them, because the baby will come out, they have nice little family together I agree I agree because I actually can't take any more tragedy and like the second I said when the three of them were running away I was like we can't lose anybody else except for the dad because we're not going to kill off the pregnant woman we're not going so it's just like I felt him going but I thought that that was his arc especially after we learned that he is partially I don't want to say partially responsible for what happened but like there there seemed to be funny business about the chemical and whatnot exactly dude so um okay Okay, so we have to discuss, and I don't know his name, but the stud of all studs. We're just going to call him stud, because you know who I'm talking about.
Starting point is 00:05:26 The stud of all studs. Yeah, I know. It was the greatest character I've ever seen. They know who you're talking about, too. The greatest character. Or a beast. Our beast. He was the greatest character, like, in any movie ever.
Starting point is 00:05:36 Yeah. And it's so difficult to, like, first of all, he had that it factor. But it's so difficult to put my finger on why he was just so, like, he was great to his wife, but he, but he wasn't like, he felt believable still. It wasn't like, oh, night and shining armor. Like, they had such a great relationship. He was great to the kid. He even, like, his shit talking with our, with the dad.
Starting point is 00:06:00 I just thought that he was the, you talk about how well written this was. I completely agree. That's right. Yeah, but the characters. Yeah. And especially him. Especially him, yeah. I just feel like we all have things to learn from him.
Starting point is 00:06:14 And every character did. like his wife kept on for him because she knows he has she has his baby inside right the the little girl learned like what it is to she was looking up to him like you have to help people dad the dad learned from that man
Starting point is 00:06:30 absolutely even the guy who had the limp when he threw himself at the end when we had the sixth set he learned from our beast he learned from stud like they all learn from stud totally such an example such an example of what a human should be selfless loving and I guess he got killed for it but I would so much rather be him and know that I lived the best life I could and I impacted most people around me I just
Starting point is 00:06:59 think that he was so like I want to put him on a tattoo on my on my wrist to remind me of like who I want to be in this world what an amazing amazing character obviously he was my favorite character in the movie was he your favorite character in the movie or who did you connect to the most I mean, I would say him, but I also, I'm like, dude, that little girl in her performance. I am just absolutely sold on her. I would hire her for any and everything. I just think she's phenomenal and very believable and perfectly cast. And I loved everything about her when she goes, I know him.
Starting point is 00:07:38 She looks back at the guy, at the limping guy, when he's holding them off, the train's about to fall. and she goes like, mister, like she wants to like him to come with him. Yes. Broke my heart, but like she's just a good little soul. And when the dad initially knew about the quarantine and she's like, we have to go tell them. He's like, we don't. And the little girls, like, we do.
Starting point is 00:07:59 We do. Yep. She just, she was so wise beyond her years. I can't believe how good that little actress was. How did she do that? Like, how did she do that? Exactly. It must have been really great direction because normally with kids, it's like you got to, you
Starting point is 00:08:14 got to have a really great director to get him in that spot so you can get that she was screaming crying to yeah like usually you can get a kid to do a little bit of like oh your dog died yourself right like i mean that was i would put i'd put this director side by side with stephen spillberg because if you watch et drew barrymore yeah i was like i don't know how spilberg got these kids to do what they did in that film. Phenomenal. And I'd put this director up there. So as you're saying that, let's do a little bit of looking
Starting point is 00:08:50 at who we're dealing with here, because obviously we're not familiar with anybody to do with this movie. Okay. Yon Sung-Heng-ho is the director of this. He also did a movie called Peninsula, the King of Pigs, Soul Station,
Starting point is 00:09:06 the ugly, I don't know any of these films. Do you know these? No, not at all. Okay. The guy that we're obsessed with is named Ma Dong Siok And he Has done a bunch of movies That I Oh, he was actually in Eternals
Starting point is 00:09:20 He was Gilgamesh in Eternals Oh, okay He did look a little bit familiar to me It was a movie Eternals is a Marvel movie Oh, okay, I didn't see that movie When you guys did you have Marvel Binge You didn't watch that?
Starting point is 00:09:30 Didn't you do Marvel Binge? We did, but we didn't watch Eternals Oh Really? Yeah Who's in Eternals? It's an MCU movie Yeah, I think we only
Starting point is 00:09:42 Stook to the Eternals was a lot of People that you would know Angelina Jolie was in it Jamich Chan Kitt Harrington, Camille Nanjani The guy that I'm obsessed with
Starting point is 00:09:55 Barry Keoggan Who Is Wait maybe we did watch this Oh Did you do all the MC movie movies? I'm going to look it up on the channel right now
Starting point is 00:10:09 Because I don't remember y'all Okay anyway he was Gilgamesh in it that's great I didn't put two and two together what's even better about that is that that means that he very likely could be hubby because
Starting point is 00:10:24 he does American films no we didn't watch it thank goodness I was like am I going crazy yeah because I kind of recognize him too beastly guy and then who's our dad yeah okay so let me look him up right now I'm surprised I didn't recognize the stud of
Starting point is 00:10:42 among stugs Gong Yu is our dad he our daddy he let's see any movies that I know nope
Starting point is 00:10:52 all it looks like Korean movies so I don't I don't know him at all let's also just see quickly I'm curious if this was nominated for anything because if it wasn't
Starting point is 00:11:05 then that is a huge mistake on the world's part dude I'm with you on that um okay by nominee Let's see, no. It was nominated for a Saturn Award Award for Best Horror Film.
Starting point is 00:11:18 And then the Asian film awards. And, yeah, no, that's crazy. This should have been, I mean, like, this should have won Best Picture. I bet you it blew up. After? After. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:32 I mean, this was like, honestly, I don't want to say this because I'm sure somebody about it. This was a perfect movie. I thought it was perfect. Me too. I thought the script was phenomenal. I thought it looked amazing.
Starting point is 00:11:42 The effects were insane. The shots were so innovative. Every character. The guy that I hated so much, the guy, the dick head guy. It was so great to have a common villain. And I think it's realistic that people would merge together to, like, fight each other in these moments. We see it happen all the time. It's like, we remember, obviously, this is a tiny moment, but I remember during the pandemic when it started, I was at a grocery store.
Starting point is 00:12:06 And this little old lady, she dropped a bag of oranges and they went everywhere. and nobody wanted to be near her or them and everybody stepped back and I like looked at everybody and I like got down and started picking up her oranges because it's like I'd rather die than like this poor woman have to get on her hands and knees
Starting point is 00:12:25 but like people all start to get because people are so afraid and I get it and here they were so afraid but I thought that was so brilliant just absolutely brilliant was there any part of this if we are going about nitpicking was there anything that you
Starting point is 00:12:40 felt like could have been better character that you didn't love, something that you wish was improved, the ending, the beginning, the middle, anything that you're like, no, because you know what on it? Yeah, the one, the one is we don't give away his phone and we take the baseballs. There was a lot of baseballs that fell, but then again, that would have, that would have made it too easy for us in the writing. Then we wouldn't have had to crawl on the luggage cart and throw the luggage because I would have just packed baseballs and been throwing them. Yeah, but those might have been loud when you're walking too. True. It could have his own issues, but yes. That's
Starting point is 00:13:15 literally my only thing because you know what they did right? They wrote characters smart. The girl, the first thing I see when I'm like, sold. She makes up the water bottle, newspapers over. They take the freaking fire extinguisherer, put it on the glass. I'm yelling at movies constantly. Grab the fire extinguers. Grab it. It's literally right there. It's in the shot nobody ever uses. Yeah, and they clearly picked up, it didn't take them 10 times to be like, they don't see in the dark. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:13:42 They're like, oh, they don't see in the dark. How do we work with it? Yeah, and they realize that with the sound too. I love that. And a lot of them are smart. Yeah, and that's what I like to see is that it's not just this one woman who like decides they're like, yeah, we put your freaking brain together and let's block off. Like, we learned something. Also, I felt that the stakes were constantly so high in this movie terror because we were not afraid to kill off.
Starting point is 00:14:07 every single care I mean nobody was safe right and so I thought that that was so brilliant that like as much as I hated it it by the end you know you know nobody is safe because we we kill off the cheerleader and the baseball player oh man that was sad that was like a Romeo and Juliet moment it really was what was it that the kids were chanting on the train um um take uh take not take her in accept her except her accept her yeah wow boy oh boy did he accept her I like biting all I know this is a really aggressive thing to say but I honestly think this is my favorite movie I've watched on this channel I'm with you like I'm actually with like literally the fact that we did not know what was coming in we see that dear we're like
Starting point is 00:14:57 what the hell is this we start freaking out there's drama we're yelling some of it's funny when he goes like oh what about your your phone ringer is really tacky that we laugh at that so great freaking and then we end up crying that's a film reject nation as many of you guys know i have been getting very very serious about my health lately started off this year over 22% body fat by beginning of september i got down to under 10% now i've been focused on bulking but a massive massive part of that any fitness trainer talked to has really emphasized this is hydration My go-to hydration product is a liquid IV. I've been using them before we ever partnered with them, which has made me very happy because it's a seamless partnership.
Starting point is 00:15:44 Because when I say I use them daily, I mean I use them daily sometimes twice a day after workouts every single time. Sometimes with four long days of filming halfway through a long day. Generally, every post-live stream, I end up offering one to John and Coy as well. Sincerely helps me feel more focused, helps me feel more present, and a lot more energized. It's a staple in our office. It's in every single room here. And if you've never tried them, liquid IV is an electrolyte drink mix
Starting point is 00:16:10 that hydrates you two times faster than water alone. You take one of these sticks poured into 16 ounces of water. You stir and boom, you've got hydration. That works harder. It has three times the electrolytes of leading sports drinks plus five essential vitamins and minerals. B3, B5, B6, B12. You all know B12.
Starting point is 00:16:27 You hear people talk about B12 all the time. And of course, vitamin C. They're made with premium ingredients, non-GMO, and free from gluten, dairy, and soy. So you're safe. And recently, they have launched a new liquid IV energy multiplier sugar-free, which fuels steady energy. Perfect if you want to clean boost without a crash.
Starting point is 00:16:45 I selfishly have kept those at my home, while the other ones that we have bought remain here. And I specifically did say the word bought, because, yes, they do not send this to us for free every month. We buy them. For all the reasons I have said why, so you can buy them at a bulk at a store, or probably the best way you can do it in because it up, support the channel too.
Starting point is 00:17:01 You can get 20% off when you go to liquid iv.com and use code real rejects at checkout. Liquidiv.com, real rejects at checkout, 20% off. Thank you, Liquid Ivy, for being a big part of my new lifestyle. That was a film. That's a film. That's what it does. You get goosebumps. You go through emotions.
Starting point is 00:17:21 You take us on a ride. Yeah, a train. Yeah. We were about an hour in when I think I went like this. All right, let's go. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, like, I felt like I was part of the movie. Totally.
Starting point is 00:17:33 I was so invested in that. I'm with you. I'm kind of curious. So you said that it was reacted to on the channel before. Yeah, with Andrew and I think Greg or Andrew and John. Okay. I want to look at it really quick and just see, because I know you looked here to see if there was any questions from there.
Starting point is 00:17:50 Right. But I'm curious if there's a couple of them. So let's just see. Because we changed around the schedule last minute, guys. Yeah. So they didn't get a chance to. ask you what the what you would have asked us um okay so this was three years ago it was greg and john by the way it has 600,000 views so good job gregg and john let's see if we
Starting point is 00:18:13 could tap the top them am i right um and that so that must mean that they loved it's two a million kids um okay uh this person says the pregnant woman's husband is literally the best character changed my mind that has 2,000 likes beastly bumblebee project a production I'm so with you. We're with you. It is the best character I've ever seen. Ever. So, so great.
Starting point is 00:18:40 Okay. Apparently, this person says, at the start of the movie, Greg says, so this movie is the little girl's fault. And John says, yep, at the end of the movie, the girl, don't go. It's my fault. Greg and John crying, no, it's not. Yeah, that was pretty much us. It was so not the little girl's fault, right?
Starting point is 00:18:54 How could you? Like, oh, my God. This person said, Morgan says that little girl is so, so good. crying into my breakfast. You and us both, dude. I mean, okay, so let's see about her. Maybe I should do some, should we look up a little trivia on this? She was phenomenal, yes.
Starting point is 00:19:08 Okay, I'm curious about that little girl. Let's see. Her name is Kim Suam, and she is, oh, it's so crazy. She's born in 2006. Really? So she was, she must have been nine when they were filming this. Wow. Okay, I'm looking up.
Starting point is 00:19:27 Thank you to IMD for, let's see some trivia. on this. Yeah, I was going to say if you want to look it up on here. The actor Mong Don Seoke, the man with the pregnant wife, used to be Gong Yu's personal trainer. So that he was the director's personal. Our stud favorite person was the director's personal trainer. I think was he on physical 100? Oh my God. That's a, that's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a, it's a TV show. I don't know. I can't go back, but you could look here if you want to. Yeah, I can. I can't go back, but I want to lose my No, no, no, don't lose. Tranda Bousan is the six highest grossing domestic film of all time in South Korea. In South Korea, that makes sense.
Starting point is 00:20:07 They deserve it. I'm with them. Wait, so scroll down to click on your man. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Our man. Okay. There he is. So you think he was on a show called what?
Starting point is 00:20:15 Physical 100. What is that? It is where stars of, like, in Asia, they could also be athletic, but there's also actors. they go and compete on this TV show that has to do with strength and I was like that would be a perfect thing for him but it doesn't look like it. Okay, Trained to Busan's director
Starting point is 00:20:41 this was his first live action film. Yon's previous works were animated features. Whoa. That's crazy. How did you do this? That's wild. We have to watch his other stuff. We have to. Filmmaker Edgar Wright who directed the BAFTA
Starting point is 00:20:57 nominated zombie comedy, Sean of the Dead was a big fan of the film, recommended the film in a tweet and called it the best zombie movie I've ever seen in forever. Let's discuss that for a second and that's a great tweet. Who wrote that?
Starting point is 00:21:11 Guy from Sean of the Dead, you said? Edgar Wright, the director. Oh, Edgar Wright. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, the filmmaker. Amazing. Let's talk about that for a second. In terms of zombie movies, I did love 28 days later.
Starting point is 00:21:22 It's like such an unbelievable movie, but this stacks right up with it, if not above it. If not above it. But because of the reason why I would say, if not above it, is because of the performances and the way the story goes and the fact that it took me on a train journey through every emotion that you could honestly have. And in a way that they're not like trying to yank it out of you or manipulate, they're giving you this story and they lead you in so many directions in the smartest ways. Yep. Yes and yes. So he who plays the character Jin He, I've got to figure out who that is, is an ex-member of the famous K-pop group Wondergirls.
Starting point is 00:22:09 Jin He. I think that that was the stewardess. So he, this girl? Yeah, so that was one of the stewardess, not stewardess, but whatever you call that. She was the girl for, oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. You're right. Oh. It's not called a stewardess on a train, but you know what I'm talking about. Yeah, I do. That's cool.
Starting point is 00:22:27 That's very cool. I'm sure that that was exciting when people recognized her. An animated prequel called Soul Station, also directed by Yon Sanho, was released less than a month after Train to Busam was released. An animated prequel. Wait, what's it called? It's called Soul Station, Soul as an S-E-O, like Seoul, like the place. There we go. Oh, yeah, it was.
Starting point is 00:22:51 Soul Station, okay. Interesting. Okay. Oh, and it's a all animated. Oh, who the characters are. Oh, who the voices. No, no, I just want to see. He was in it. Zhang Heuk Jin was in this movie.
Starting point is 00:23:05 Okay. He was the bad guy we hated. Yeah, but not all of our... Not all of them. No, he wasn't the one we hated. Well, he was the one who got pushed out by the guy he we hated. So we did hate him, too, but he wasn't... Yeah.
Starting point is 00:23:18 The film recorded more than 11 million moviegoers in South Korea. Wow. given that the film was one of the most successful Korean movies in history, there was instant talk of a sequel, which director Yian Sangho instantly refuted. Ironically, he would change his mind
Starting point is 00:23:36 three years later and start work on Peninsula. Oh, is Peninsula? Is Peninsula already dropped? Okay, this is Peninsula in 2020. A zombie virus has, in the last four years, spread to all of South Korea. Four Koreans in Hong Kong sailed through the blockade
Starting point is 00:23:51 to Icho on. for U.S. dollars, $20 million on a truck. Okay, so it seems like there's a sequel to this. Not as good, I guess. It's 5.5, trained up as 7.6. On IMDB? The TV series looks like it's doing better. Parasite, the gray TV series.
Starting point is 00:24:10 He was a director on that and a director on a film called The Ugly End Revelations. Click on the Ugly. I want to see who is, what is that? It's 2025 this year. Look, yeah, it's definitely live. same production company
Starting point is 00:24:25 and let's see for a second any of the same act no smaller cast yeah okay uh
Starting point is 00:24:33 let's see but I'm glad he's still working I mean because this has 7.2 which is pretty high for it
Starting point is 00:24:41 I think it's a TV series so dude any I mean like wow oh no the ugly's a movie the parasite
Starting point is 00:24:49 is a TV series I can't even with this movie wow and it was two hours and it felt like it was 20 minutes I'm yeah it just it flew by um
