Starting point is 00:01:34 Aaron look I think you should kick off the review in case you have to leave while Andrew and I talk for an obnoxiously long time so if you guys listen to us on Apple or Spotify please give us a 12 star rating out of five and get a chest t-shirt so that way Aaron feels better about his life
Starting point is 00:01:55 It's true. Aaron, please, what are thoughts that you have? I'm going to jot down some things that I definitely want to touch on. I thought my pen and notepad. I'd do that now. I'm a pen and notepad guy. Wow. He's changed man.
Starting point is 00:02:08 This movie was great. I loved it. I loved the animation. I loved the music. I loved what it had to say about relationships and how we operate from a place of learning. what we do when we learn new information, right? What we do when we learn
Starting point is 00:02:29 that our perception is not as what we thought it was and how hope can really influence that. I think this movie was did a really good job at kind of displaying a believable way of how Optimus Prime and Megatron could go from friends to mortal enemies and it's really sad
Starting point is 00:02:49 because, you know, you see the inklings of that from the beginning from both of them and watching this happen over the course of under two hours while being not only cool in its action but also heartfelt but also hilarious surprisingly so but not overly so just used all of that stuff in the right amount and the right doses which is surprising to me from the trailer i just thought it was a really good time you know and and it added a lot of cool lore to the transformers mythos at least to um me that I wasn't aware of and yeah just what is said about these characters kind of learning that
Starting point is 00:03:31 they can be more than it's the eye that they can inspire people through their actions and that shouldn't blindly follow leadership because it tells you what to do rise no follow me Follow me off screen But no I really enjoyed it I thought it was a very smartly written movie And it was incredibly paced Yes
Starting point is 00:03:57 And all the voice actors did a really good job Not necessarily doing a impression Of the people we know who play them But doing their own rendition Doing like an homage Something that felt organic to how these characters are written in this movie And it was very believable
Starting point is 00:04:14 Yeah I loved it Those are my short, concise thoughts from the time being. That's so good to hear. Andrew. That's great stuff. Yeah, no, look, my first introduction to the Transformers was the 2007 Michael Bay film. And, like, I remember, like, Megatron, I thought was a really cool villain, but it was a villain I love to hate. And in this film, I thought, did a great job just making this character so sympathetic to what happened.
Starting point is 00:04:43 And obviously, the relationship with him and Optimus, you got that line at the end of the first. movie like you left me no choice brother so like that gave me an idea obviously they had some type of relationship back on cybatron and like here we got that backstory which i really appreciated i thought it was incredible it was sentimental it was deep and like seeing it go from where they were like at the very beginning where he helped him like escape from you know after he got uh you know when um those robots or the the autobots or whatever they they caught a um optimist when he was like looking up some information because I loved how curious optimist was
Starting point is 00:05:19 and optimistic, if you will. But again, I loved seeing the backstory with Megatron in regards to like, oh my God, this is a character like has such a tragic pack story to, like, again, I don't agree with the decision making that goes into it, but I understand his motivations and those are my favorite type of villains.
Starting point is 00:05:39 And in regards to what Aaron just said, I agree, like I was one of my main concerns coming into this is like, are they going to be imitating or making it their own. And, like, there were times there was, like, I can hear a little bit
Starting point is 00:05:50 of, like, Peter Colon and, like, well, I guess Hugo Weaving is my, my, I know we did the 86 film, but I don't remember who's the voice of Megatron and that, but Hugo Weaving's, the Megatron I know, but I love how these guys, Chris Hems. Prince.
Starting point is 00:06:04 Ah. I love how, but I love how Chris and Brian, like, made these characters their own, and, like, it really did feel authentic in the younger versions of themselves. And I love, like, too, the difference in them, too, before, like, you know, everything happens, all the information and the plot, like, really starts going. Like, you got Optimus. He's, like, full of wonder and adventure and, like, just seeks, like, to just better himself. And then Megatron, he's, like, kind of more of the group, the group thing type of feel, like, hey, I just want to follow and, like, just get to the next level so I can, like, get out of the minds and do that.
Starting point is 00:06:38 And he's, like, just a part of the system. but they still like again they seek the same goals but like they have different ideologies and I'm like you know that's a recipe for disaster at the end of the day but I love again I think what I love the most about this is
Starting point is 00:06:54 the characters and the character development you had a great story the pacing was good the animation the action sequences all but I think it's the characters that I appreciate the most and it was just so well written so well done by the voice acting just everything just really just really mixed together
Starting point is 00:07:10 And also, too, I think you made a great point to, like, none of the comedy, in terms of the comedy, it didn't undercut anything, you know, like, you know, a lot of times, like, we'd go from action sequences to, you know, like, more dramatic, really serious moments to, whether it's branding or, like, whether it's Lawrence Fishburn telling a story of how, like, Sentinel Prime, like, betrayed, like, these are some really serious things. And I think, like, in terms of those tonal shifts, and then you got the comedy inserted in there, too, like, none of that undercut. I think it all balanced really nicely. So, I know it's recency bias, but I, as of right now, this might be my favorite transformers, but I've only seen one, two, and three. I haven't gone past there, but, and 86. Oh, well, if you haven't seen four or five, then you really should just keep the mouth shut. Right? The Mark Wahlberg ones. Yes, I need to see those. You know what you're talking about. But, yeah, really, yeah, but I mean, this was an incredible ride and like obviously you know what's going to happen in terms of optimus and megatron but it
Starting point is 00:08:12 still doesn't take away from that and i love too how at times it could be really suspenseful as well um but incredible film what do you think gregory hey man you guys said everything that i would i'd hope you'd say uh is like all in your notes really good stuff yeah yeah i was just going to like you know alley up you for some talking points here uh i i was really impressed with it because i i felt like this could have easily just been a very by the numbers origin tale of yeah we know we got to go here we know we got to
Starting point is 00:08:46 go there we know what has happened with their arc and it kind of happens in a way that sort of creeps up on you like if you're if you're letting yourself be consciously aware that at some point their friendship is going to go separate ways and they're going to be enemies then you
Starting point is 00:09:02 start seeing some of those little seeds planted early on with lines about power and watching how Optimus Prime just cares about being a better version of himself and the people around him like literally being of service to people whereas Megatron's whole ordeal is about being in service of the Sentinel Prime guy and that's what I think is such a smart maneuver to do to have because some people I can imagine maybe might feel like it's a bit like too much of a shift but he put his whole all of his stock in existing and hope.
Starting point is 00:09:37 and belief system all in this one guy like everything they really drove that home like his hero worship is through the roof when it comes to this one guy and on top of that he killed he killed his favorite transformer prime on top of that like the other one so of course his he's obviously an alone individual like you see doesn't have like family or anything like that he only he only got like one friend and that's that's that's optimist prime so all all he had was that belief system. So to watch that all get shattered, I actually didn't find it jarring. Not saying you did, I'm just saying that if someone pushes back against that. I don't know why people really like it. So I imagine no one really thinks that's something. I'm just concluding that people might think.
Starting point is 00:10:21 Regardless, it was great. That was a good arc. So, yeah, I think, too, I mean, I could understand the reasoning for maybe believing that this could be your favorite Transformers movie because of how connected you are to the Transformers. In terms of like the live action Transformers runs, my personal has been like Rise of the Beast because that one I really felt like you got to know the Transformers a little bit better than the Michael Bay versions. And Bumblebee to me is like the best movie of them all.
Starting point is 00:10:51 I want to see. Yeah. I want to see. Bumblebee is the one you can connect to the most that still might be my favorite. I'm not sure. I don't know. I haven't seen. I haven't rewatched since the theaters.
Starting point is 00:11:02 But here they really found a way to humanize everyone. and also find ways that were very clever. Like a lot of times you get celebrities to do voice work, and it just seems like you've got celebrities to be an animated movie so you could flat their names on it, right? And it seemed like they got very careful, specific direction on what to do as, the best word for it, as they are transforming as characters throughout this story.
Starting point is 00:11:31 You know, like watching the evolution of the voice and the friendship, and especially for Megatron, who actually Brian Tyra Henry has a bigger battle to go through here in terms of his transformation. When I remember seeing the trailers being like, this just seems like too goofy. Like I don't understand how we could possibly get to
Starting point is 00:11:48 the dark side of what it becomes at them. And the movie pulled it off. That was a part of where I was like, they're really pulling it off. They knew when to be tense. They knew when to be suspenseful. And they knew how to also give us the reward of like brilliant chase and action scenes
Starting point is 00:12:02 with beautiful maneuvering throughout. and some real cheerworthy moments with some excellent poetry to it throughout. I thought it was a very rewarding film. I think that it actually is a great family film on top of that. It doesn't feel like it's just aimed at kids despite how funny and cool it is.
Starting point is 00:12:21 So, yeah, I thought this was an excellent, excellent experience. And if not the best, it's certainly one of the best Transformers movies that as ever, it's like one or two. It's incredible. It's an incredible. It's a truly an incredible film. And I love how, too, how much time we got to, I mean, the whole film we got to spend on Cybertron
Starting point is 00:12:41 and we got to expand the lore there as well. And I think, like, just the environment was just, it was so alive. It was incredible. And like I said, it just reminded me of, again, just visual reminder for me. It just reminded me of Corrassant and Blade Runner. They're just, like, visually meeting each other. And I just love the look of it, the aesthetics and everything. And I love, too, the point you made.
Starting point is 00:13:04 It was like, I was thinking it right when you said, you made a great point, Greg, I want to acknowledge the awful great point you made. I love how you can make... Eric, like, wrap it up, I gotta go back. It's just venom. It's just venom. You're going to watch me react later in a few months anyways. The trainers are going to start soon.
Starting point is 00:13:20 I just, I love, it's okay, you can scream at me at home later. I love that they were able to make transformers, which are bigger, can't chew, and then life things look so tiny in this, like, Monk his place. That was pretty cool. Yeah, messing with the environments was a really smart call. Yeah. Music all around, solid stuff. Is there anything we're missing before we head out?
Starting point is 00:13:40 I really want to make sure we're covering every single one. Can I not read any? Aaron, take off. Go leave Aaron. I love you guys. Just in me a favor. Give me that cardboard cut out on your way out. Just to fill in for you.
Starting point is 00:13:51 For anyone who tunes into this episode later on, on live TV, that they have this thing. So that way it doesn't look like we're just dealing with an empty chair. Yeah, yeah, you just place that, just place that right in frame. That way, there you go. Yeah, he'll fill in for you. You have fun of venom. Come on, Aaron, hit him.
Starting point is 00:14:12 You have fun of venom. Come on, Aaron. I liked it. I liked Venom, despite its flaws. I really enjoyed it. It was fun. So I hope you have fun, too. The opening scene is the most important part of the movie, though, so don't miss it.
Starting point is 00:14:30 It's, it's the most important part of the movie, though, so don't miss it. like if you miss that opening scene you're not going to understand anything do i need to have watched the first i've seen the first two but do i need to rewatch them you should rewatch them in slow motion that way you don't miss a detail and Aaron i appreciate the commitment to the bit but now i'm sorry to worry about you missing that brilliant Aaron you got 25 minutes opening you got better hurry enjoy the movie be fine you're going to be late have fun You're going to get in a car crash. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:04 And you're going to have to run to the theater. See you at home. Well, you better hurry, man, because you're not in the road as you're reading that 21 minutes. Have fun. See you at home. All right, Andrews. Take it away. All right, take it away.
Starting point is 00:15:19 Megatron's original name, D-16, is a reference to the Japanese serial number of the original Generation 1 Megatron toy released by the company Takara in 1984. The letter D is short for Destron, the Japanese name of the Japanese name of the Japanese name of the Japanese. the Decepticons used in older media, while the number 16 denoted in the original Megatron toy as the 16th release in the Japanese toy line. Dude, that is some sexy fact right there. Right? What else do we got on here?
Starting point is 00:15:46 We got early in the film, Elita tells Orion, you don't have the touch or the power referencing Stan Bush's song, The Touch from Transformers, the movie, which included the lyrics. You've got the touch, you've got the power. By the way, Stan Bush did some songs in the 1988. awesome film known as Bloodsport. No way, really. Have you seen that movie?
Starting point is 00:16:06 I haven't, but I know it's John Claude Van Dan. You really need to react to that. Get on, Greg. GIFID. GIFD. The muscles from Brussels. I'm going to kick him Bison's ass so hard. That the next Bison want to be. It's going to feel it.
Starting point is 00:16:21 Now, who wants to go home? Who wants to come with me? Wanna B. Of course. One of B-127. Homemade Friends is called A-8. This is a reference to a skit from Key and Peel where B127's voice actor
Starting point is 00:16:37 Keegan Michael K pronounced the name Aaron as A.A. Ron. Of course that's right. Aaron leaves. Of course Aaron leaves is a perfect one for Aaron. Yes. I got to say, Kegan Michael Key, at first, I was, normally
Starting point is 00:16:52 when I hear Keegan Michael Key's voice pop up as brilliant of an actor as I think he is, I really do think he's a brilliant comedic actor. Sometimes his voice pops up and I'm like, I feel like I'm only going to hear or see not the character yeah but I thought
Starting point is 00:17:05 he was excellent here he was great I thought it was so funny it was hilarious in it Chris Hemsworth Chris Hemsworth well because the next word is worked
Starting point is 00:17:15 I combined the names Chris Hemsworth worked with Peter Cullen to get the right voice for a younger Optimus Prime brilliant awesome smart yeah I loved how it would like peek through
Starting point is 00:17:24 yeah especially when he got more stern and serious yeah than the next movie he's just gonna be that one voice it's just yeah like whatever someone that's calling out
Starting point is 00:17:32 whatever your voice man transformers one is the first transformers theatrical animated film in 38 years since the transformer since the transformers the movie in 1986 I believe that from living elita uses the term go-bots as a pejorative in the 1980s tonka go-bots were a rival transforming toy line to Hasbro's transformers that also included an animated series and an animated film each released within months of the Transformers counterpart when Hasbro bought out Tonka in 1991 go bots were then established as an alternative universe in the Transformers multiverse oh sweet I love it yeah you're beautiful let me go to some spoiler ones and we'll call it fine you want to be that way fine if I want to be
Starting point is 00:18:15 there are several scenes that have nods the original animated film one scene is the slow motion jump in the air of Optimus Prime while it really did stand out another is of Megatron walking slowly holding his stomach while wounded I do yeah why didn't pick up on that it's your job to be the reference guy i know i'm referencing stuff i should i'm i paying you 300 an hour for i know i i failed that is why i failed uh this is the first transformers film where megatronus prime is not a villain but rather died died fighting alongside his siblings against sentinel prime his mask becoming the decepticon logo is a reference to Revenge of the Fallen, his first animated appearance.
Starting point is 00:19:02 I hate when world culture ruins. Lord, you know. First, last one. First Transformers feature film to feature no human characters. Oh, yeah. So these guys talk and sound incredibly human. And it takes away the illusion that there are no human characters.
Starting point is 00:19:19 Move generally human as well. Well, yeah, man. I thought that was a really fun time. Did you have a good time? Yeah, Greg, it was really good. I really enjoyed that a lot. I'm not going to lie, you sound a little bit like beetle juice, too. I got to say.
Starting point is 00:19:40 This is that what I sound like, Greg. It's a bit of beetles juice. Greg, is that what I sound like. It's kind of weird. Yeah, it's kind of weird. Anyway, guys, follow Aaron on his Twitter that does not exist. Follow Andrew, Agor 7-Eleven. Check out his YouTube channel, Movie Source.
Starting point is 00:19:57 He needs to change that profile icon. That's really going to update that. Yes. It's not appealing. One day. It's an Eminent S that just like, looks like you just typed it. Yeah. And it took a screenshot.
Starting point is 00:20:09 We'll have to figure that out together. I mean, I think you can do it. I'm kind of here all the time, so it's hard to find time. But we'll figure it out. Anyway, thanks for being here. And Godspeed. Lex. You know what they say about Lex?
Starting point is 00:20:30 What is the Lex is a robot in disguise? I can totally see it. Which means Lex is in humans. You can do whatever you want to Lex. That's right. You can smack it around. You can kick it at the team. Because it doesn't feel anything.
Starting point is 00:20:47 You don't have a soul. Whatever pain Lex is emitting, it's just a program. Whatever sentience you think you have is negated by your mechanical pieces. You can dunk it in the tall. Yeah, you can short out. It's circuitry. It out on the road on the freeway, humiliated in public. That's right.
Starting point is 00:21:04 You could do whatever you want. You could give it silly paint jobs. Lex is just a robot. People clothes. Yeah. You can make it do all your chores for you. I love it. Lex is this strange AI machine that thinks that Lex needs to contribute monthly to this
Starting point is 00:21:20 Patreon. That's a great transformer. Think of it. A transformer who just takes in art and then spits out. art people don't like yeah and then we take out that hostility out on it on it yeah and it's shitty art because you're not real you're not real lax your fake your robot in disguise meant to help civilization but when you're not helping civilization we're doing whatever evil deeds we can think of to get out of our system yeah because it would be wrong to do it to any human being let's like that not the real
Starting point is 00:21:55 i don't want to get canceled what whatsoever we're not not going to torture the real lex. Or would you do anything to the real ex. Yes. A robot lex, you can remove its ass. Do whatever you want to it. You can force it to be any electronic object you want. Oh my God.
Starting point is 00:22:12 Be a projector. Be a... To robot Lex. Yeah, robot Lex. Not real Lex. Not real X. What did you do with Real Lex's body? Where did you stash it?
Starting point is 00:22:22 Yeah. Where do you scan it and you just dumped it in the rivers of Cybertron? Find the whole spark To save yourself from the dark depths We have dredged on this particular show Because it's spooky It's not a spooky season It's just a robot
Starting point is 00:22:43 That's true actually It's a robot When you think that it's just a robot Like no matter how life-like it may seem It doesn't matter And you shouldn't feel bad about your What this is saying about you I get out of your system somehow
Starting point is 00:22:57 The end of a video is the place to do it.
