Directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, this irreverent road-trip adventure follows small-time pot dealer David Clark (Jason Sudeikis, celebrated for his roles in Horrible Bosses and Adventureland) who, in a desperate bid to smuggle a massive shipment of weed from Mexico, creates a fake family to help him cross the border undetected. Teaming up with David is Rose (Jennifer Aniston, known for Friends and Marley & Me), a savvy and spirited stripper who agrees to pose as his wife. The makeshift family is rounded out by a couple of unexpected additions—Will Poulter (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, The Maze Runner) and Emma Roberts (American Horror Story, Scream 4) bring youthful energy and offbeat humor to their roles as the faux children, while Nick Offerman (famed for Parks and Recreation), Kathryn Hahn (celebrated for her sharp wit in Step Brothers & Agatha All Along / WandaVision), and Ed Helms (of The Office and The Hangover) round out the ensemble with memorable supporting turns. Tara & John break down every outrageous moment—from the hilarious border-crossing mishaps and awkward family dynamics during the long-haul road trip, to the clever one-liners and quirky set pieces that have made We're the Millers a modern comedy classic. Starting point is 00:00:00 This episode is brought to you by Adidas. When the frustration grows and the doubts start to creep in, we all need someone who has our back. To tell us, we'll be okay, to remind us of our ability, to believe, because their belief in us transfers to self-belief and reminds us of all that we're capable of. We all need someone to make us believe.
Starting point is 00:00:19 Hashtag, you got this. Stop. Do you know how fast you were going? I'm going to have to write you a ticket to my new movie, The Naked Gun. Liam Nissan. Buy your tickets now and get a free chili dog. Chili dog not included.

Starting point is 00:01:00 This video is brought to you by Huell and Liquid Ivy. More on them in just a bit. Oh, man. That was some fun stuff. Thanks to prep for helping edit down these highlights. We appreciate you. Holy. We do.
Starting point is 00:01:24 Tom Molly. Also Eric Nerd Chronic. He does some juice, too. He's good. He's good. He's good. He's good. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:01:32 A. John Humphrey. How do you feel now? I feel. I don't know. Thank you for tuning in to the comedy Saturday Spooky Hour. Oh, that's good. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:01:50 That was good. You know, we need to be the... Count Dracula. That's right. We need to be like the dual host of like a Sven Goulli type show or like an Elvira, Vampira, kind of like movie of the week. And this week, it's weird of Miller's. I mean, this was very fun.
Starting point is 00:02:08 I had a very fun time with this. I remember when this came out and, and it's weird. I've forgotten what the hook of this even was aside from like, oh, they're not a real family. So yeah, I forgot all about the like the smuggling angle and stuff like that. But yeah, I mean, this is for as far as like a high concept, you know, character comedy, road comedy goes, I thought this was pretty fun and appealing, you know? good cast all around you know you got your are somewhat archetypical characters and you know it is
Starting point is 00:02:36 it's an r-rated raunchy comedy a bit um so you know there are times where you could tell like oh okay we're doing like a lewd improv here you know and and you can feel a little bit of that looseness but for the most part yeah i thought this was pretty fun pretty snappy a lot of uh you know musing and uh even endearing bits and stuff like that um i had a good time i would say i had a good time i would i would happily watch this again and chuckle a a second or third time you mean fast forward to all the jennifer anneson dancing parts that's right and to uh and to uh will polter's pants down totally totally big nut got to see it got to see that um um i was this funny like this is yeah this is like i feel like i might have even caught this back in the day but this was yeah like a whole
Starting point is 00:03:23 fresh watch so yeah yeah i mean like you said with the earnest moments those that was my favorite is when he was in the, um, in the van and he's pretending to talk about meeting his wife for the first time, but he's legitimately talking about how when he saw Jennifer Aniston's character. Um, and I thought it was just, that's when the movie flipped, where I was like, wait, because we were pushing a lot with like the comedy and the jokes and we get the set up here, like, let's get drugs. We're fake family, yada, yada. But that was the first time on the movie like really flipped and I was like, oh my God, so genuine and it was so sweet the way that he looked at her i mean when you have a great cast like everyone in this is just um awesome but the way they looked her i was like oh my god that's so
Starting point is 00:04:10 freaking sweet and then it kept getting it kept giving us those heart moments like him with the girl and them trying to help him out like uh with the one two three and the punch thing and then the kissing of the girl i thought it was really cute how it grew more and more into like in a typical like family film where they were trying, I like the way that they wrote it in regards to the plot, trying to hide it so that them becoming a family sneaks up on you, right? And I think that they
Starting point is 00:04:38 did a good job of that because they still gave each other a lot of shite, um, even towards the end, which I think is very realistic. Um, and I just, I, the, my most favorite is Catherine Hahn. I mean, I just adore her so, so much.
Starting point is 00:04:58 you guys haven't seen this studio on apple she's great in it she's great and everything but um in the part when she's like oh yep this feels great this is this is good like that is so improvised like that is such a choice instead of like i mean you could do anything in that moment that just makes me it makes me laugh i think she's she's brilliant everyone else is really great too um and i like the little the little plot twist of like the way that they're the one is that what it said yeah He's like Yale Miller. I like that it took us on a bunch of little things that come in the way, right, to get us back to the end. We get it.
Starting point is 00:05:36 We have to have like things get in our way. But I don't think that it was like, oh, they had to like write that in to make it like so that we're delayed longer to make it more difficult. The only one thing that was like, that's real convenient was the people running from under. the van in the beginning where I was like, that's very convenient. This is a little more absurd than the rest of the movie. So it does come across as like, well, thank God that happened. Right. Right.
Starting point is 00:06:07 Versus like the rest is sort of like, yeah, I would, I would see this coming up. I don't know, tarantula. You know, he's got a big nut now. He's got to go to the hospital. Like, you know, stuff like that. And then her, I think it's very cute. They wrote it that she has to give him a dance. And then, you know, she sort of saves a day by steaming the chacon in the face.
Starting point is 00:06:27 It's a good time. You know, it's, I like that it has heartened it. Otherwise, I wouldn't have really liked it as much. So the second that it got genuine in that camper, I was like, oh, I like this movie now. Because it now knows what it's doing, which means if you have smart writers that can do that and add hard to it, I know that when they're adding the jokes, they're self-aware. Meaning they're self-aware that they may be like going overboard. They may not be as good of jokes that they're like, they're playing right. which I'm like yeah most of this is probably improv and good writing yeah I mean that's the thing is like I feel like even if the script itself isn't like you know blowing your socks off with ingenuity right do think that this had a good blend of especially for like the time and place this came out I feel like this could have been way more into the weeds no pun intended in terms of like how much improv there is or how long
Starting point is 00:07:27 we need to be labor a certain bit or scene like this I think benefited from having like a pretty decent pace about it because yeah it's like the scripting has enough clever setups or cheeky little moments and bits and things but it's also not so constrained by that that there can't be improv but it's also not so overrun with improv that it feels like no one edited the movie which a lot of these comedies can feel like and I would agree wholeheartedly like you know I can enjoy a certain amount of like misanthropes bouncing off each other and like everyone's ribbing
Starting point is 00:07:59 and everyone's a little edgy and irreverent but like you know after a certain a while that gets grading and I thought that actually because I think in a movie like this you're semi sitting there going okay when are they actually going to become a real family and want to spend time together after the movie ends I think the movie did a pretty good job of earning that stuff
Starting point is 00:08:17 because yeah like they're at odds enough and kind of predominantly enough that like when the moments of heartbreak through along the way they're kind of nice they're little like shangri laws of of you know of you know warmth along and otherwise kind of uh prickled comedy but then yeah by the end you sort of feel the yeah i think because the cast they assembled is comprised of such good actors yeah and comedic act it's like all of them we've seen in other stuff doing really great dramatic work even if we're we mostly know most of these cast members from uh doing comedy yeah so i feel like yeah once you get to the end and they're like no we're not going with you we're not we're not going to be pawns in your game anymore and when he's sort of like moved by a you know the unity that he's seen among them but also like the fact that dan would actually like do him the solid yeah i'm going to let you go and and you know obviously it doesn't work out exactly as you would imagine but yeah like
Starting point is 00:09:23 Like, I thought the way that they orchestrated the growth of everybody and, and, you know, the hijinks from along the way. Like, it didn't feel like too much was happening. There weren't a lot of bits that felt like completely random or tacked on. Yeah. It also wasn't so straightforward that it wasn't kind of able to surprise you at a point or two. And so, yeah, it's like they wind up together at the end as you expect they would. But I thought the whole, like, witness protection thing was kind of a nice way to do that.
Starting point is 00:09:50 And two, yeah, the way they maintain this quality of, like, like we're definitely still like this hybrid organism of like we're definitely four individuals who just sort of become friends but we also just kind of like fall into this family dynamic yeah we can kind of forget for a little bit that we're not an actual family and then we're reminded and there's like kind of a beauty in both you know yeah as you at least would imagine their you know characters living on to inhabit or whatever right it's like you bring in a bunch of misfits together. And as we see through the movie, we see these misfits fall into what they would ideally seem like family, no freaking way. I don't do that. I roll on my own.
Starting point is 00:10:32 And then we see them being like, it was kind of fun. And then they all each individually have moments where they're like, oh, I kind of like that. Right. And so that that I thought was really sweet and fun. Right. Yeah. And you kind of believe how and why they would all kind of of get together like they all do without rubbing it in your fit no way i didn't feel like it rub like it would realistic you're like oh yeah all four of these people are just kind of alone i mean like they make it obvious with uh emma roberts who funny enough i think she is the one who gets like the least developed because like you know jason steck is and will polter you spend a bunch of time with and jennifer aniston yeah it is fun when uh when uh when uh casey does come in clutch a couple
Starting point is 00:11:14 of those times for sure um but with her character it seems like she's got the most reason to be like oh yeah like pseudo family great because they keep harping the homeless joke but like even will polter seems like he's kind of on his own doesn't really have exactly all he's got is dave to hang out with and then dave's obviously on his own because you know thomas lennon makes that very clear up at the top and then that whole thing of oh jimmy he left he took all my you know stuff and it's like it's not like it's it's a massive surprise you can see it coming but just yeah like this for everything this movie did that could have been or is obvious i thought it like had us a bit better than average execution for it.
Starting point is 00:11:51 It's like this is a kind of a straightforward kind of a comedy you would see, but it was like pretty good. And if someone was like, should I watch Where the Mirals, I'm like, you know what? Depending on your taste in raunchiness and, you know, like characters, again, who are edgy, like when your protagonists are edgy to some degree, I think that's not for everyone. But this is a movie, this is an example of a movie where I'm like,
Starting point is 00:12:14 even if that's not your flavor, you might still like this. I agree. And I always talk about why was there not a callback in so many films and there's so many opportunities, you know, when I watch films here. And I'm like, that could have been a great callback if they would add it. And this did it in freeze. Yeah. We had the punch.
Starting point is 00:12:34 We had the one, two, three, and we had the grab and kiss. Yeah. All great callbacks. It went boom, boom, boom. And I adore that. Yeah. Throughout. It's great.
Starting point is 00:12:43 Throughout they had a good grip on. Yeah. Like certain things you know are coming. but other things I'm like oh that's fun that they tied that around like it's always a sign of yeah somebody uh I always appreciate that in either a script or whoever's choice it was in just yeah like you didn't necessarily have to go that far especially in a comedy if something rings a joke once cool but like having the presence of mind to tie multiple things back around this is always fun yeah yeah and it gives it kind of that little bow it makes it seem like yeah you're working yeah like oh we get where we
Starting point is 00:13:14 were going, right? Because it's like with a good callback, it should, the thing should really only be mentioned once in a film. And then you see it later. You're like, oh, it sneaks back up on you. And all those things, I was like, I was hoping they would come back because this is such a huge statement. I just want to be able to like grab a girl and kiss her, right? And then what a sweet talk that they have that seems very much like dad and son when he's like, just count to three. And at first you're kind of laughing. You're like, this is going to be a dumb joke. And it's not. It turns into like a, you know, real conversation where he actually really helps him, which I think is like really, really.
Starting point is 00:13:51 It's just sweet. There are some really sweet moments in this, but it's also very funny. It's a good time. I liked it. Reject Nation, if you haven't heard, I'm going to tell you about a little thing that's been part of my routine these past couple months. Tried neck to spill. Heule, H-U-E-L. God, that is tasty.
Starting point is 00:14:12 Well, I've been using Hewled update, you guys, on January 25th. They weigh 218 pounds. As of the day of filming this, I'm down to 188. That's 30 pounds lighter, six-pack Greg incoming. And easily, a necessity, one of the biggest things that I've been doing. It's making smarter, easier food choices. Lake Hewles, Malac Edition, ready to drink a meal? I've got a ton of these.
Starting point is 00:14:32 As a reminder, before I ever partner with them, they sent me bottles to try. I was very, very clear that I would not want to do a partnership unless I actually liked the drink. And by like, I mean taste. I wasn't even into the weight loss. yet yeah turns out i did i was hooked because it's not just convenient it actually tastes good like legit milkshake good not looks nice on the label but taste like chalked no it's good good so here's why it works for me it's a complete meal in a bottle packed with 35 grams of protein slow release carbs 27 essential vitamins and minerals you're not just filling up your fueling up
Starting point is 00:15:09 as we like to say no prep no cooking just grab it drink it and you're good to rock and that's for flavors they've got chocolate vanilla ice coffee strawberry banana if you can't decide variety box is a great way to go you will makes eating well simple takes the pressure off especially if you're trying to stay consistent the best part it's affordable each bottle costs less than five bucks if you're finally ready to try it out or if you already take huel and now you want to help support the channel and a little extra bit you can go to huel dot com and use our code rejects for 15 percent off your first order plus a free gift that's huel dot com code rejects you could also go to huel dot com slash rejects i did that today so whether you're getting in shape or trying to eat smarter
Starting point is 00:15:48 huell makes it easy to stay on track thank you huel for sponsoring this video all right reject nation quick personal update on january 25th that was 218 pounds as of today i'm down to 188 that's 30 pounds lost six pack gregg is coming in and while there's been a lot of factors one of the biggest keys has been keeping my energy up especially while having to up my cardio and to help out with that i've been drinking a little thing called liquid ivy every single day already a consumer before we ever partner with them lucky guy what can i say i like to take their uh sugar-free hydration formula and honestly i do feel a difference i just i'm so appreciate that it actually tastes really good too and truth to be told whether i'm coming off a workout or even
Starting point is 00:16:29 having a rest day i still take it i just feel better whenever i take it and here's my works one stick and 16 ounces hydrates better than water alone thanks to their specific liv hydroscience formula something i have definitely committed to memory what that exactly all entails beyond just knowing it actually really gets the job done and is healthy but i do remember that it delivers three times the electrolytes and the leading sports drinks it's also backed with essential vitamins like b12 and vitamin c which are huge for recovery energy and staying sharp and the flavors as you just saw raspberry lemonade is my go-to actually i have a variety pack lemon lime pretty good too oh tangerine tangerine is also pretty solid but pretty good no matter which one you get liquid iv has become a non-negotiable part of my
Starting point is 00:17:10 routine. So if you're doing cardio, strength training, or cutting calories, or wish to feel better throughout your day, hydration really is one of the easiest, most overlooked wins. Some of this weird guy in his mid-30s who really appreciates the value of being hydrated. So if you'd like to support your body and, in turn, support the channel, you can head to liquid iv.com and use code rejects for 20% off your first order. That's 20% off when you use code rejects at liquidiv.com. If you've been thinking about it, this is your sign. Give it a try. It help me stay on track. It still helps me stay on track. And I believe it'll help you too. Thank you, Liquid Ivy. Well, that's a good example. And then, yeah, like, the way they paid that off was nice because he mentions wanting
Starting point is 00:17:54 to be the kind of guy who would do that. Jason said, like, it sets up the whole like one, two, three thing. And even that feels like a real person's piece of advice. Because then Jennifer Anderson's like, what are you talking about? He told you that. But then you see instances where it works. And then you see instances where she's like you always punch on one and i'm like yeah i get it so yeah it's like there's there's voice to the characters in that way it's like it's not so pristine that it's you know breaking the reality of the of the moment or the joke or whatever like yeah they had like very natural ways of tying those things together and the quality of the just hijinks i guess it's like the tandem of hijinks especially in a movie like this i feel like you could be overloaded with
Starting point is 00:18:36 a whole bunch of sketches like a movie like this could easily feel like a loose amalgam of sketches i agree with that yeah and and this had a pretty good grip of like it's extended ensemble in terms of like okay you've got chaconin one eye for the most part you've got like the most random thing is probably like louise guzman the cop bit you know which even that like makes sense to the situation totally yeah it's like it's not like you go on like a rogues gallery of like oh man then we're going to get a million comedian cameos it's like you get nick offerman and um and uh katherine han yeah and their daughter and that's like one of the major sort of points the players that they meet along the way chaconne obviously and then you have ed helms back at home
Starting point is 00:19:18 and like like i can see also a version of this movie yeah that would be just like jam packed with like we got every especially with like jason sedecis leading the thing i'm like you could get every s&l person yeah i'm surprised there wasn't like a will forte in here or something or fred armison which i would be welcoming of those presences but i feel like you know you've seen a lot of lot of movies like this where you're like, oh, yeah, they just got a bunch of people together and rolled camera, you know, where is this, yeah, as a road movie. Yeah, we have pretty streamlined. We got a hit here, right?
Starting point is 00:19:49 Which I like, they appreciated. Yeah. Yeah, okay, I'm going to read some trivia. So, Will Poulter stayed up late while listening to Waterfalls, my TLC to have his character rap along the scene, which I probably mentioned he had to like really prep for that. His inflections on that were so good. Oh, my God, Holter personally chose the song. Let's go.
Starting point is 00:20:10 Because he considers himself a hip-hop fan. So that's why that song is in this film. I was so fascinated by that boy. He's like a big buff man now. It, like, blows my mind. This is, I think, the first, this movie. Was this his first thing? Or like, oh, no.
Starting point is 00:20:26 Oh, no, but it's the first time I became aware of who he was. So he was like this to me for a long time until finally he's been back out here. And then Andrew and I watched one of the Chronicles of Narnia movies. and he pops up as like a small boy. Oh. And he's like super precocious. He's been working. Yeah, he's been out here.
Starting point is 00:20:41 He's like a secret child actor who you, who most people I think only know of as like a, again, like young adult and adult actor. But like secretly, he's been out here this whole time. And so then you see him in a movie like this and you're like, damn. You're like, you know, this is like a working, you know, this is bread and butter. Yeah, well, that and you're given what he does now, this is like the last. place i would expect to see him especially because he's like a british guy and you would never guess it you would never know no you would not it's it's always just funny to me to see him go from this to all the other stuff that he's um okay we're doing this reaction because warfare is coming
Starting point is 00:21:21 out yeah perfect one two punch okay so david named his family the millers after his apartment complex 200 miller street apartments great um okay then they name that jennifer and and Jason have been in five movies together are horrible bosses, horrible bosses, too, Mother's Day, the bounty hunter. So they do lots of films together. Wow. Oh, wow. Okay. Emma, these are boring.
Starting point is 00:21:49 Wow, IMPB. Seriously, like, come on, do we have any, like, good trivia? Let me go to spoilers. Nothing's worse than when a fact is just a detail the movie pointed out to you. I know, right? Oh, oh, this is fun. Emma Roberts, Jennifer, Janice, and Will Pills are all one best on screen kiss of the MTV Movie Awards.
Starting point is 00:22:05 Hey. I mean, that's fun. That's fun. That was a fun gag. Yeah, makeup artist made a prosthetic replica of Will Poulter's genitalia for the tarantula bite. Gotta get that authenticity. Got to get that authenticity, boy. Okay. I hope they gave him the cast. You know that they gave Nicholas Holt the Nosferatu one. I haven't seen that yet. Well, there's a big old. There I go. There's a big old. It's swinging around. Nosferatu in it and apparently as a rap gift they gave it to Nicholas Hold they gave the prosthetic to Nicholas. Oh my God. I love it so much. So Wilp Holter maybe he's got his frame somewhere. I just, it's weird that they said they made it like a replica because normally they just give you a prosthetic and it whatever. It's fine. It's yeah. It's it's fine. It's fine. It's fascinating that they
Starting point is 00:23:01 went to that that length when I'm like no one would know if you just took a generic. Eric one. Exactly. Like, are they out like there. There are many prosthetic members out there. Yeah. Okay. In scene where the main characters revealing the real names to one another, David asked Rose, the real name, Sarah is spelled with an H. This seems to be a direct reference to the same career, which Elizabeth's character made in leaving Las Vegas to Nicholas Cage. Okay. Nicholas Cage. Okay. These spoiler people on IMDB, these are, they're not great spoilers. You can read the rest. Those were the the highest liked ones. So just you keep getting further down. They're going to be like his actual middle name,
Starting point is 00:23:43 the guy on set behind him who was drinking that coffee is David. Isn't that funny? And there this is Jason Siddiquis' character named Tara. I know you would get there. I know you'd get there. Maybe they're related by first name blood. Wow. We went there.
Starting point is 00:24:00 We did it. We liked it. We had fun. This is a good old time. Okay, so leave us a like, leave us a comment. Tell us how cool we are. Yeah. We love you guys.
Starting point is 00:24:13 Go on Patreon, support us, rejectnation shop.com. You know what to do. Also, if you haven't gone over to my YouTube channel, I'm watching reality over there. We don't watch for out of here, but I watch it for all of us on my channel. Taryn sits by the window and looks at life passing by. And I talk about it. I'm like, hey, look at Robert there. And he's crossing the straight for the fifth time to die.
Starting point is 00:24:35 to get his mail. He's got a lot of Amazon packages. Why are you going to do all the packages one by one? Every envelope one by one. It's not efficient. I'm going to have John as a guest. That would be so fun. We will narrate so much life.
Starting point is 00:24:54 We are the David Attenborough of your area. We really are. Let's freaking go. We love you guys. And we'll see you on the next one. Alexandria, I would love for you to join us for a family road trip. Ooh, imagine. You know, it would be perfect because, let's face it, because we got stuff to face.
Starting point is 00:25:22 John is, you know, on the road, he'd be playing the guitar, DJing. I'd be on the road and on the wheel, having a good time and then snapping at people in traffic And being like, would you stop playing the goddamn guitar, John? We got to pass the time, G. Alexandria, you'd be there in the back seat, making sure you're rolling us some bullets. Oh, snap. Some lines of cooking. That's right.
