Andrew Gordon & Tara Erickson dive into Wonder Woman 1984 (2020), the action-packed DCEU sequel directed by Patty Jenkins (Monster, Wonder Woman). Gal Gadot (Justice League, Fast & Furious) returns as Diana Prince / Wonder Woman, now living in the neon-soaked 1980s and working at the Smithsonian while secretly protecting humanity. Chris Pine (Star Trek, Into the Woods) reprises his role as Steve Trevor, brought back under mysterious circumstances through the power of the Dreamstone. Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian, The Last of Us) stars as Maxwell Lord, a power-hungry businessman whose wishes bring catastrophic consequences, while Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids, Ghostbusters) joins the cast as Barbara Minerva, whose transformation into the feral and dangerous Cheetah provides one of the film’s most memorable battles. The story follows Diana as she confronts moral dilemmas of love, sacrifice, and truth while navigating the chaos unleashed by the Dreamstone’s power. Key moments include Steve Trevor’s emotional return, Diana’s Golden Eagle armor reveal, the climactic showdown with Cheetah, and Wonder Woman’s final confrontation with Maxwell Lord—delivering one of the most talked-about endings in the DCEU. With stunning action sequences set against 1980s backdrops, heartfelt themes, and a blend of superhero spectacle and character-driven drama, Wonder Woman 1984 remains one of the most debated films in the franchise. Starting point is 00:00:50 The Money App that makes it simple and cheap To make small yet significant investments Let's right okay it doesn't look like there's any scenes after that
Starting point is 00:01:11 but I will check terrorist checking it doesn't look like it so if you're listening to us on Apple or Spotify please give us a five-star rating do all the YouTube stuff like, like, comment, subscribe when you do
Starting point is 00:01:24 ring the bell ring the bell thank you to prep for up edit down these highlights we super appreciate them and yeah if you guys haven't listened to my new podcast it came out it's called the rage pod would love you guys to go and listen it's on uh youtube full videos and then apple spotify wherever you find your podcasts do you have anything to tell the people andrew anything you want to pitch them probably not uh no i'm good i think we can get right to the questions let's do it guys moises sandoval
Starting point is 00:01:59 How do you guys feel about Zach Snyder Wonder Woman? And do you guys think that James Gunn would use some Zach's inspiration for his Wonder Woman or go his own way? I really like Zach Snyder's Wonder Woman. I mean, she's about, I mean, in somewhat the same vein as Superman. She's about hope. She's about protecting the innocent. And, you know, I like that, you know, she speaks against power. And, yeah, you know, from that perspective, I really like Zach Snyder's Wonder Woman.
Starting point is 00:02:28 I thought Cal Godot. I mean, there's a couple times. We made a little fun of some of her deliveries. But overall, I think she did the role really well. And I think James Gunn, again, we've talked at nauseam. You know, he really understands characters. We really like the Superman film. I love the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy.
Starting point is 00:02:44 I really, we really love the suicide squad. So, again, he's really good with characters. He's good with emotion. And, you know, he studies, I mean, he knows comic books pretty well. So I'm very anxious to see what he's going to do with his version. version of Wonder Woman for sure. I think there's definitely some parts you can take of it. You don't want it to be an exact copy because you'd like it for him to make it his own,
Starting point is 00:03:06 of course, because you don't want to exactly have a replica, you know, or anything like that. But, you know, there's, again, there's a lot of things I really enjoyed about Cal Godot's, or Zach Snyder's Wonder Woman, I guess. But yeah, what about you? I would definitely want James Gunn to go his own way, only because there's some, like, grit and like savageness that I think James Gunn can like bring maybe to showing her character and making her just as great as she is in this film but have a little more like maybe grit or strength you know like James Gunness like I'm sure take the inspiration of the stuff that's like
Starting point is 00:03:45 obviously she provides hope and like protection and safety and love and she's caring and all that but um i think to see her in scenes where she's literally just smashing it out of the park like taking care of business would be dope as hell she's got to save the squirrels too yep she does all right from michael medina catharia by the way if we mispronouncing names we apologize thank you for being a royal reject and for asking the question we appreciate it hey friends i'm not sure if i'm in the minority but i also or but i enjoy this movie pedro pascal a very empathetic yet scary villain. Kristen Wigg also did a great job,
Starting point is 00:04:25 although the CG on her as Cheetah did bother me. And I wish they would have just gone practical like Mystique and X-Men. I agree. Cheetah is one of my favorite villains, and I wish they did her justice. I'm hoping James Gunn brings a version of her into his universe.
Starting point is 00:04:41 Two questions. One, did you ever watch a movie based on something, i.e. a book or a character you love, and you were disappointed by the portrayal, especially in an instance where the actor did a great job like here but the overall story and the infusion of the character in the story just did not work two maybe more to Andrew any villains you would like to see adapted in james guns universe i'd really love to see a live action version of live wire i love her in the
Starting point is 00:05:08 animated series i love live wire too i think it's lorry petty who voiced her in the animated series she's such a fun character she's so free-spirited and she does a great job so i I would definitely like to see Livewire. I think the, I think a character I've been waiting to see forever, and I think my fellow geek check toys on the same path as me, I've been wanting to see Brainiac forever, and granted we did get to see him in a version of him in my favorite show of all time, Smallville,
Starting point is 00:05:36 but like that's on the smallest screen. I want to see him on the big screen, so I would really love to see Brainiac. So I would be curious to see how James Gunn adapts that version of the, I'd love to see how he does Brainiac in his, in his DCU, in regards to, you know, portrayal of books to characters that I've been upset with that I read the book. I'm going to be honest, I have read some books where it has been adapted into a movie, but I usually read the book after the movie. So like the Harry Potter films,
Starting point is 00:06:05 for instance, I saw the Harry Potter films. I fell in love with the universe and then I read the books. Oh. And I still love the movies, but I think the books are eons better. That's what people say. Yeah. But like what's interesting, though, is, Like Jaws, for instance, as we all know, is top five one of my favorite films of all time. That one I actually read the book first and then I watched the movie as back when I was like eight or nine. I think that's one of the few times where a movie is better than the film. I remember reading the book. I was like, I can't stand most of these characters and I kind of want them to get eaten by the shark.
Starting point is 00:06:39 Whereas when I watch the film, I don't want that. I actually feel very scared for them and want them to all survive in the end. So, yeah, I would say, like, maybe Jaws were, but not disappointed, just like, I would just use it in a different way. Yeah, I like the movie more. Yeah, I like the movie more in that sense. But what, is there a character that you'd like to see in the DCU James Gunn adapt that they haven't in any of the movies we've seen? I don't know. What I will say is, like, I think I read the book, Water for Elephants.
Starting point is 00:07:07 I remember really liking that book. And I do think that Reese Witherspoon was in the film that came out. and I don't remember whether it's good or not. So you guys can tell me whether or not I should be mad about that. I feel like I watched it and it was good, but maybe it wasn't great. And that was a long time ago.
Starting point is 00:07:27 And we all know it probably was before when I got long COVID. So who knows, y'all. Okay. Eric Horsman, I love the first Wonder Woman, but so disappointed in this, for me, the worst part was the lack of body autonomy. What's your feelings of the non-concessant?
Starting point is 00:07:44 central body invasion of that poor dude steve's takeover i mean she basically um yeah uh do you want to go first on this one or you want me to go ahead now be personally if galgado did that to me and i was not yeah i doubt the guy is complaining i wouldn't personally care but i i do under and it didn't personally bother me but i i'm not going to argue with anybody i and i understand a lot of people where I were totally like did not like this and were just thought it was very violating and I can understand this man was not in a conscious body or was not consciously aware of what was going on and she you know did the thing with him and you know only Steve was in the mind there so yeah no it definitely was weird I'll say that but I was just looking at as a perspective of I see Steve's
Starting point is 00:08:34 face and I'm not thinking about it in that perspective but I didn't think about that at all but I do agree like it is weird that's all i didn't think about that at all and like i guess in in you guys pointing it out now um i i'm thinking like the guy's just completely unaware i understand that you're basically saying fighting for after the fact that he's body was used in a certain way and he didn't consent to it but the thing is that he's not like in there being like no right i i'm i'm saying that he's unaware so i wasn't even thinking that and that he's coming out of hurt from it because he's coming out the same person and he has no idea but um i do understand what you guys are saying i just i'm not full force on that page i didn't really think about it yeah
Starting point is 00:09:24 all right from andrew nickerson i know we haven't seen much of sean guns maxwell lord yet but which version of the character intrigues you more i mean you kind of said it andrew we really we saw like a minute or so of him at the very end of Superman Oh yeah But we did get to meet him And he was obviously a very lovely human being So that was so cool of him when he popped in
Starting point is 00:09:48 Well we were by the way Tara and I did not know he was coming in And I was total surprised to us Because I did see some people saying That was totally staged It really wasn't So I can't make the comparison Of one minute of screen time
Starting point is 00:10:00 Versus an entire film Where he is the antagonist So I did I will say for Pedro Pascal, you know, I did like his larger-than-life performance. I thought, like, you know, it was very riveting in that perspective. And I did like that they showed the flashback of him because I could understand his perspective, not feel justified by it. You know, so I, you know, what his characters wants were, again, fascinating. I didn't fully understand it, although the backstory made me in the flashbacks made me somewhat get it.
Starting point is 00:10:33 but I don't know, I didn't care for the, the character, like, fully. But, again, I like the performance by Pedro Pascal. Like, he was very captivating, particularly, like, I couldn't take my eyes off the screen when he was on. Like, I just particularly enjoyed his performance. So, but again, in terms of the comparison, he's only on, Sean Gunn's only, you know, on screen for a minute. So I can't really compare. Yeah. It would be hard to compare.
Starting point is 00:10:58 I haven't seen a ton. But I do think that Pedro Pascal has obviously a very wide range. and he brought that to play here in this film, and that's all I really asked for from an actor. When you're playing that big, you also have to make it believable, and he did. There's other actors who can play it big and come off, try to be a villain.
Starting point is 00:11:15 You're like, I don't believe you. That would be something that I hate and would remember. This was great. So I'm down. Jay Rushin. Okay, what is the point of weird gold armor wings? And who would you guys want as the next Wonder Woman on screen? I mean, well, the gold armor wings was like her moms and it said it protected her.
Starting point is 00:11:37 They built them to, or hysterias. And they built it to withstand like the weight of the world, which was wild, which it did make me a little mad when the cheetah comes for her and starts ripping up the gold wings. I was like, what in the actual F? They built this that you saw all the soldiers on her when we're cutting to hysteria and like they're not breaking. So I thought that was a bit of a weird choice. But, of course, we needed that cool moment of her throwing the wings off,
Starting point is 00:12:09 which did look very, very superhero-esque. And for the next Wonder Woman, I don't know, you can answer the first part, and I'll think. There was an act. I can't remember her name. It's really bothering me. There was, like, on Twitter, they were showing this actress's name, and she, I'm so sorry. I can't remember her name. My mind is so foggy from the list.
Starting point is 00:12:31 I just cannot remember her name, but I remember they showed pictures of her and was like she looks like Wonder Woman. If I remember her name, I will comment back on this video when it is released, but I just remember looking at pictures from going, oh, my God. I have not seen any of her performances, but she's got the look. So I'll comment on it when I figure it. Let us know. Once he figures it out, then I'll have to judge it to be like, is she believable? Because if she's not, get out of my face. A rejuignation, I'll be honest.
Starting point is 00:13:04 Money has always made me anxious. If I'm low on money, I stress out about how will I make more? And if I actually have money, I stress out about, I'm afraid I'm going to lose all this. That's why I've made a discipline, a real discipline. Not just to manage money, but change how I relate to it. And that's where something like Acorns comes in. This, it is today's video. Yes, it is today's video sponsor.
Starting point is 00:13:27 And Acorn is something that before we ever agreed to work with them before I ever agree to sign up, with them is that we had a testimony from someone here behind the scenes who told me a story about how acorns actually got them out of a big financial ditch they were once in. I honestly just love checking the app a few times a month, watching how it builds. There's a sense of glee I get from it. And more importantly, a sense of calmness that I'm not used to associating when it comes to money.

Payton on client endorsement compensation provides incentives to positively promote Acorns, CER2 compensation provided. Investing involves risk. Acorns, advisors, LLC, and SEC, registered. investment advisor view important disclosures at acorns.com slash rejects but seriously acorns you guys rock thank you all right all right from Alex uh thank you from being a royal reject and for asking a question we appreciated fun fact this movie released in theaters and on HBO max on the same day in December of 2020 during the pandemic was there a 2020 or 2021 release you wish more people could have seen and or do you have a comfort movie that you turn to during this time oh i forgot was did dune come out the first dune come out around
Starting point is 00:15:42 yeah because i remember like damn this movie's really good i wish uh it didn't come out on streaming it yeah it did come out on streaming in the theater at the same time yeah you're right i'm going with dune one because i love that movie so much and i was so upset that it was on streaming at the exact same time and that movie should have like made way more money than it did because it was so freaking good. So I would say that one, but what's the comfort movie I turned to during COVID? I think I turned on like Moulin Rouge a couple times. I really love that movie, good musical, but it's like kind of an old school one. I don't really rewatch things, as I've already told you guys, but he does. He's watched like the series of
Starting point is 00:16:21 Smallville, like 27 times. Yes. It's true. I don't really do that, but I do, I do remember like from high school, I really loved Moulon Rouge because I'm a musical theater person. right that's that was my my uh what i graduated in my degree um but uh so i think it was that one and i can't really remember releases that came out then because felt like a it just feels so long ago you know what here's a good thing for you guys the patrons when you send in questions what i love is when you give us like multiple choice like if you say was there 2020 2021 but then give us the choices and then say which one do you think and then we can talk on that a little bit more because sometimes it's late here we already shot before we can sometimes get a little like brain fog and a
Starting point is 00:17:10 little tired and it's hard for us to think of like crap and then maybe when I'm in my car I'm like oh I would have said that for sure so if you guys can give us multiple choice when you ask us the question is that would help a lot it's a good suggestion yeah so you can come in again Alex and maybe you know give us that that'd be great yeah thank you Alex All right. Last question. DJ Kento. At which point in the movie did you know there was no saving this and it was only going to get worse. Also, the morality of just taking a dude's bod. Yikes. You guys are so funny. You're like the morality of taking a dude's body. And you know what? I literally never entered my mind because I don't think that the guy's soul and like his awareness was there. It wasn't like I'm standing here and I'm like, holy crap. This girl's about. to invade my body. I feel like it just happened and then when it's gone, I didn't know that any of it happened. Do you know what I'm saying?
Starting point is 00:18:08 So I never even went there. I now get what you guys are saying and you're like, yeah, that's bad. Not really consensual, but again, didn't tap into me because I think the guy is fine. I think he's good. But I'll just understand what you're saying. Yeah. I think I realized there was no saving this when he went to the. president and he looked like a coke addict and the president was like yeah get him whatever he needs get him
Starting point is 00:18:34 that copter you know i really like the first half of the movie to be quite honest uh i like the the very first scene how like it kind of set apart the or set off the theme of the film how like no don't take any shortcuts in life and you know unchecked power yeah and you know like we got to be honest with ourselves and like you can't live a lie and and that kind of thing i did like a lot of the themes they were setting up in the film and again the first half and i love how like in that first whole scene in the mall the film was really like in the title it's called 1984 right wonder woman i really like how we were setting up a lot of like all these aesthetics and visuals of the 80s i feel like the film kind of in the second half just focused more on all these supernatural elements with the wishing stuff i kind of feel
Starting point is 00:19:18 like it just got very convoluted and lost a lot of focus yeah but having said that even in the second half when i still felt that way i think the part that still i enjoyed the most were the Steve and Diana scenes. I still like their chemistry and I still feel that emotion from the first film that we love so much. So I think that was the only saving grace in the second half
Starting point is 00:19:40 that kind of just fell apart on itself with so much going on. But the first half, I actually really liked. It was just more of the second half aside from the Steve Diana stuff. I'm like, I did not care for it. And I actually like Barbara. I like the way they set up Barbara a lot.
Starting point is 00:19:56 Like I actually resonated with her character. You know, the way she's the forgotten woman. She's very awkward. Nobody really sees her, even though she's this very attractive woman who's pretty funny, actually. But I totally get where she's coming from and like not wanting to, now that everyone, you know, sees her and envies her. And I'm like, yeah, why would you want to give that up, right? Even if it is a lie. So I could totally see like, again, not justifying it, but I could totally see why she would never want to give this up.
Starting point is 00:20:23 So I actually liked her character. I didn't like the CGIT, which they would have one practical there. so I forgot whoever said that at the beginning I was totally in agreement with you, but there were definitely a lot of things I liked about this movie is just again, the second app was just a little all over the place for me. Yeah, I totally think that this movie would have gotten a lot more credit if they would have went practical with Christian Whig.
Starting point is 00:20:45 I do understand with her bouncing around, they're obviously going to have to do that, CGI. But the practical close-ups would have looked a lot better, so I'm with you 110% on that. I mean, I really do say this a ton. is that, you know, now that we have CGI, I get it, people are like, fix it in post. But I do think that, you know,
Starting point is 00:21:04 when we take it to back in the day movies before we had that, they were better in a sense because you're having to be more creative with it because you're having to actually build and make those things with your hand and make them work in front of the camera, which actually matters when we're making a film that you're going to show to an audience.
Starting point is 00:21:22 It matters on how they're going to feel when they see the thing. Um, so I do understand the lack of excitement in seeing her cheetah and it's a CGI and you're like, that kind of looks weird. It didn't even look like her to be on it. I was like, wait, is that, is that Kristen Wigg? No. It doesn't look like her. It did not at all.
Starting point is 00:21:44 I know she's kind of like the whole point of it too is like she, it's the maybe that's the point because she's not herself anymore. She's shedding her humanity. Sure. Yeah. So she's becoming an apex for her cheetah. But still, I would have liked. just a somewhat resemblance. I wanted a little bit more of her.
Starting point is 00:21:59 Her eyes and mouth. That's just a me thing. I think that's probably most of them out there. And I'm with you on the beginning of the movie. But I think obviously what Steve's character brings to the movie is a lot of like, he makes it light and really fun. He is such a good actor. Like Chris Pine really makes this movie for me.
Starting point is 00:22:22 But Gal Godot also did a great job. So I, the thing is, it's like she, she delivered lines with a lot of subtlety and then there were just a few, I called them out that I was like, that's weird. I don't, she might have gotten a weird direction of they were like, no, you have to say it louder because you're yelling through a window. That's literally what went through my mind that like somebody's directing her because if you saw her that ending monologue where she's like, give them like faith and hope and love, whatever. And most of her other lines were done very subtly, which is just what good acting is. You're going to be in a close-up, even a mid, even a master. It's just, just be real and be grounded. Please, for the love of God.
Starting point is 00:23:03 Everyone was, did that, did a great job. There's only a few lines there. So I still think this movie was a lot of fun. There's a few things. Yeah, get some fixes. I hear you guys are, like, excited about the James Gunn thing. I had no idea he's even doing that. So I'm excited to.
Starting point is 00:23:20 So, yeah, I guess we'll see. Do you have any last thoughts? No, just, uh, Again, there was things I enjoyed, things that, you know, didn't care for, but I enjoyed Galgado just in general as Wonder Woman, aside from what you were saying, too, some of the line deliveries, but I'm interested to see whoever they cast next. It's going to be fascinating to see and I'm excited for whatever DC-EU film that we do next as well. Yeah, we love you guys and we will see you on the next one.
Starting point is 00:23:54 Thank you.
