Yeah.
X-Men, Dark Phoenix.
Tell everyone how much more you liked it than...
Oh, oh, my God, no.
I mean, obviously, totally...
I totally different movie.
I love this movie.
It gives us the foundation of who Gene is.
And, oh, my gosh, I can't tell you how many goosebumps I got during this film.
Of watching Gene's full power come to life was amazing.
And also seeing the pain that, you know,
Xavier buried, you know, I was really on his side. They really did a really good job of making
the audience struggle between what was right and what was wrong. You hear Blue Grinch's state of mind
of like, well, she killed one of our, you know, our friends, our X-Men. And at the same time, you know,
he's blaming Xavier for what has happened. Although Xavier was just trying to protect her
because, you know, she had a death of her mom, which she caused that,
but also her dad, you know, gave her up.
So I don't blame Xavier for doing what he did.
But as we know in what Blue Grins was saying, like, you buried it.
It's eventually going to come out in a really bad way.
And it did.
And I'm just so glad the heart they brought to this movie between Gene and Professor Xavier
and how she forgives him, which was obviously where we all wanted it
to go because it just would have been insane for her not to and for them to not forgive Professor
Xavier for doing what he did because he was he really was just trying to protect her but you live
and you learn we realize that the walls that he built needed to be you know well not really needed
but we're knocked down and seeing that this story come to life and seeing someone else like the the
white hair ladies what I call because I keep forgetting her name but seeing her come in and try to take
that power, but Gene's sacrificing herself to now get rid of her, I think was really amazing
to see. But we can see that she didn't fully sacrifice herself because she's still up there
in the sky, which I love. And we hear her voiceover saying, this is not the end of my story,
which I really appreciated because we really got to dive into, fully into Gene. I mean, yes,
all of the other X-Men were there. And I love seeing all of the other X-Men were there. And I love seeing
all of their powers when they work together, that is like goosebumps city, dude. Like when when we get to
see them all and all of their powers in the master shots of just like everything going on and how
they're all trying to fight against these powers that are coming after Gene, what an amazing
like journey, an amazing thing to watch, amazing visuals in this and obviously amazing writing.
Whenever I see that it was written, directed and produced by the same person, we know that we are
are going to get, for the most part, an amazing story, an amazing film, and that's exactly
what we got.
Right.
First, let me just preface this with, again, I didn't remember a ton about this.
I just remembered, the only thing I truly remembered was Mystique died.
That was honestly it.
And there was a sequence on a train.
Other than that, I didn't remember much.
And I also remember the film was extremely maligned and not very well regarded.
by most people.
Having said that, I went in with extreme low expectations,
and I did not hate this film,
but also at the same time,
in regards to all the films we've seen up to this point,
there's so many great ones.
I would probably say it's probably my second least favorite.
I would say X-Men Origins, Wolverine, and then this one.
And again, there's some good stuff I'm going to go over that I liked.
Let me just get the negatives really quickly out of there.
I thought the film, at times,
the pacing was not always there,
For me, there were times where it dragged a certain exposition.
Again, a lot of exposition.
I'm like, okay, these are natural conversations.
I could totally see them having where they're explaining stuff.
And it's for us, the audience.
And I can actually see these conversations happening.
And then there's other conversations.
I'm like, does this conversation need to actually be happening?
But again, there were just times where I just felt the film was just again,
slow and dragging because Tara and I'm not going to reveal which film.
We watched a movie last week that was two hours and 45 minutes.
At some point, it'll be up on the channel.
I can't wait for you guys to see that reaction.
I think you know what I'm talking about.
That film felt like it was an hour and five minutes because the pacing was so damn good.
And this film, while it was only about an hour and 46 minutes, it felt like about two and a half hours.
For me, for me, if you didn't fill that way, that's totally great and awesome.
But again, there were times it just, it was really, the pacing was just off for me.
It was like a snail's pace.
And also, too, when we get to the trivia, I'm very curious what I'm going to see because it really felt like Jennifer Lawrence.
did not want to be in this movie at all.
So it was interesting.
And again, I'm glad the scenes we did get with her.
But yeah, like I said, I don't know if that's a negative critique, but it's just, it's
interesting when you have an actor or an actress that just doesn't want to be there
body language wise.
And you can just, at least for me, I could just feel that she didn't want to be here.
Oh, really?
Okay.
Just how I felt, just because I think what I've just read in the past and just from knowing that
and then just watching it just.
Oh, you knew that.
So you've read stuff that.
I'm pretty sure I did in the past, but also, too, it's just like she had become so big as an
actress and like I'm doing this X-Men stuff now.
And I don't know.
I just felt like she was above X-Men now at this point.
I don't know.
Maybe I'm wrong.
Well, we're reading the trivia.
Anyways.
And also, too, look, I don't really know the dark Phoenix story.
I know it's very epic.
I know a lot of people have such great love for it.
So I'm not invested from that perspective because I don't really know it too well.
um so you know from that from that uh you know point i can't say i'm like upset it didn't like
it wasn't the epicness from the comic i don't know it that well so you know um i can't be like
too offended from that perspective uh having said that i went in with extreme low expectations
and sometimes when you go in like that a film's not going to offend you as much and again i i
didn't hate this film again i didn't love it either like i did with some of the x-men films uh some
of the Wolverine films and of course the Deadpool films it's I wouldn't put it anywhere on
the pedestal of those personally um and also I wouldn't put it also on the level of hate that I think
it's gotten from a lot of people I haven't read at times yeah it's this film's actually gotten a lot
of hate I did not know that yeah but again it's all subjective it's how the film it's how you relate
to it but I think you again touched on on some interesting points I think I liked seeing a lot of
the inner turmoil between the X-Men I think it started off on an interesting note we're in the 90s now
and the world has kind of like wrapped their heads around oh my god we love the x-men now you know
Eric is kind of like he's living a peaceful life as peaceful as it can be rather um there's um you know
anytime there's a problem the x-men come to the rescue so you know they they're there's a lot
of good PR for the x-men right now so i thought it was interesting and also the team really there's
good camaraderie they know how to work uh you know in tandem with each other there's really a family
dynamic, which is really what the core of the X-Men is.
It's a family at the end of the day.
And also, too, the way you started the film on that eerie tone with just Gene Gray,
obviously we know this is, even though it's an X-Men film, it's her, and it's called
the Dark Phoenix.
So it's her film.
And also, too, like, just can she control this thing that's really tough to, you know,
this inner turmoil inside of her.
And I thought that, like, it's an interesting, you know, thing, like, that's something
like, powers or not, that's something we all deal with, like, you know,
whether something's in your control or out of your control.
And I found that to be resonated with me personally.
So like from that perspective and also too like when you're dealing with that, who can we rely on in that situation?
We rely on friends and family.
And I appreciated that about and I thought the film from that perspective was executed in a way that I appreciated it.
Yeah.
Again, it wasn't like, oh my God, this is the best film ever.
I'm not going that far.
But I appreciated like some of the subtleties and the messaging in that.
And again, like with what happened, you know, in terms of like with Charles, he's just trying to protect her.
Yeah, I know he didn't tell her the truth, but she's an eight-year-old girl.
What's he supposed to say, your father didn't want you anymore?
And I chose to protect you and hide.
And of course, the whole thing of the truth shall always come out.
Of course, that's usually how it is.
But I understood where Charles was coming from.
I also, while I didn't agree with Mystique or Raven, I understood her perspective and where she was coming from.
I totally, you know, her and Charles were starting to have a little bit of a clash of ideology.
It's like, hey, like, we got to take care of our own.
Like, if some, if we're putting our own endangered to protect humans, like, at the end of the day, like, what's, you know, why are we doing that?
So I can understand where she was coming from.
But again, I understand Charles, because we're always one bad day away from them turning on us, too.
And, you know, it's not always just about that, too, but we got to do what's right.
Even if it, even if it means sacrificing.
And obviously, I don't want to sacrifice.
but we got to do what's right. We're the X-Men.
Yeah. I mean, it's like being in the armed forces, right?
You know you're going to go in there probably maybe could get hurt or die, but people still do it every day.
And that's kind of what the X-Men are, you know, with their superpower heroes, why they're stepping into that line of play knowing what could happen.
But I do understand how, you know, she was trying to make a point of like, well, where is the threshold here?
how many people do we sacrifice for the human.
Right. Right. Yeah. No, and I could get that too because like if my, if my family was going
out there and doing that too, it's like there's a point like, yeah, no, I again, didn't agree
with her, but I get where she's coming from. I could understand the motivation and what's driving
her there. Like, the X-Men mean everything to her. So, yeah, no, like, there was some good stuff.
There was some good drama and also, too, to see Blue Grinch, uh, aka Beast, like to see him,
like, actually go on a revenge tour there for a bit. It was just,
It was, I mean, you know, that's from how he felt because mystique was his everything on top of the whole team.
And, you know, it was weird to see that, but it was understandable as well.
You get where he's coming from.
But again, there was a lot of good drama in here as well.
And then you got this threat level of these aliens, you know, trying to harness this power as well.
I thought there was a lot of interesting beats as well.
And then you got, of course, the normal action and stuff that we get, which all was awesome.
I think that train sequence is probably probably my favorite.
I would just off the top of my head.
The stuff in the space, like seeing Quicksilver in there,
I will say I was kind of sad not to have Quicksilver in the train.
As badass as that train sequence was, just because Quicksilver is my favorite.
He's the best.
I would have loved to have had him.
Maybe it would have made the battle too easy as what they were like.
Maybe.
Maybe.
I don't know, but I just wish we could have had Quicksilver.
That's just me nitpicking.
But overall, again, I didn't hate this movie.
I wouldn't say I loved.
I would say I okay liked it somewhere in that range.
I'd probably say like out of 10, I'd go like a 6.6.5-ish somewhere in that range, I guess.
But yeah, some good stuff, some stuff I didn't care for.
Like I said, second least favorite.
But I'm so happy that you really enjoyed and loved it.
And again, I don't remember a ton from the first time, but I definitely remember.
I think I liked it a lot more than I remember from the first time.
So that's good.
That's good.
Yeah. Well, while you get into trivia, I'll just say I really like the train sequence. The train going through the building was awesome to see. I think my favorite thing was seeing Professor Xavier kind of like looking between the trains and he's holding this girl back while also getting into the minds of trying to save all of the X-Men, which I found very interesting. That whole fight sequence was awesome. And I also really loved when Gene was first there.
with Magneto and them fighting against this helicopter together, like she's trying to take it down
and Magneto's just trying to send it out of there. It was fun to see them play against each other
and then a cool idea to have them all, you know, once she forgives Professor Xavier,
all come together to take that lady down. But I do think like one of my favorite things I think
was magneto crushing the train altogether.
That was wild.
But I really felt the music when it was like,
you know how to channel and you can utilize your power.
You can choose how to use it.
And in that moment, she does,
where she just like puts a handout
and she starts just like sending people into thin air.
I love that.
I love seeing that from Gene.
I think it's just a very powerful,
film, but also just a powerful vision
to see this woman who's like fully in control,
especially with the line that we get from Jennifer Lawrence
in the beginning where she's like, listen,
you know it's all the women saving everyone else's ass.
And we get a really clear vision of that with Jane
is that she is one of the most powerful forces out there.
So I really love that this movie existed to basically highlight
the dark phoenix and how much power.
power she holds and also just like once she learns to sort of control it in a way in that
moment it was really awesome to see and then of course cool to see where she's like my emotions do
give me power like you can't actually control me and then she she takes her up and sort of gets
rid of her but she's still living up there and I'm sure we'll we'll get to see her hopefully again
I don't know what happens but I really liked seeing that and I like that and I like
that that was our ending. And I feel like this movie brought in heart at the end to see
Magneto and Professor Xavier. It was a really beautiful callback to like them playing chess,
which I just really adored because like the whole, the whole statement of this film is like
family, right? That's why he took Gene in. And that's why in that last memory that she was like,
I get it. You did it for family. And now she has to do it for her family, which in that moment,
she's referring to the X-Men is her family.
Yeah, no, that's exactly what I was just about to say.
I was going to say that when she, I mean,
she was already starting to lose control once the solar flare started happening.
She was pounding the drinks and then the whole thing happened to the party.
But once she felt that disturbance in the force, if you will, in her mind,
that her father was still alive and, oh my God, I've been betrayed.
My father's really still alive.
Professor Xavier lied to me.
That's when things started really going off the rail, or off the rails, rather.
and then, again, the comfort of knowing that she has a family on her side and backing her, like, that's what brought her back.
Yeah, I just, I like that. She knew she could trust him again.
Yeah, no, I like that. And also, yeah, once she also got into his mind and saw that her father was kind of talking smack about her after the whole accident and then Charles was defending her.
Like, it's like, okay, this guy does care about me and love me. And he was just protecting me at the end of the day.
So, and one last thing before I get into trivia, I do, whatever you think about this film, I do appreciate that this film made an attempt because, again, in the first three X-Men films, we didn't get a ton of interact, or at least the, you know, the relationship and interactions between James Martson and Pham Jensen with Scott and Gene.
I like that this film really attempted at least to, you know, really go off the dynamic, yeah, that relationship in a way.
Because that relationship is very meaningful and important.
And so I'm glad that they really showed how important.
And like, no matter what happened, Scott was always there for her.
After what she did to Raven, after the government's trying to get her, after all the X-Men or some of the X-Men are like turned on her, some of the kids.
And he's like, no, I'm fighting and standing by my woman.
I'm like, oh, I agree.
I love that.
That's sweet.
Yeah.
Reviot?
Yeah, let's do it.
All righty.
This film was meant to be the start of a new series of X-Men films that would start the new younger cast, G.
Gene Gray, Cyclops, Nightcrawler, Storm, Mystique, Beast, Quicksilver, Jubilee, Dazzler.
Oh, yeah, there's no Jubilee in this.
Following their introduction in the past few films, but the critical and financial failure of this film,
along with studio merge with Walt Disney Pictures, means that those plans were forcibly abandoned.
Wow.
Any further X-Men films will instead be part of the Disney's Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Okay.
So, yeah, after, obviously, Deadpun Wolverine, of course, that will happen, yep.
The film's budget was set to be much smaller than the previous film due to the box office underperformance of X-Men Apocalypse and executives even went as far as to initially plan to release the film directly to home video and screaming.
The film was ultimately released in theaters and lost the studio almost $120 million as the second lowest grossing X-Men film of all time, only beaten out by the new mutants, our next film, which was released during the COVID-19 pandemic in 20.
So the new mutants is also not a good movie that people hate.
Well, I mean, that also came out during the pandemic.
I haven't seen it, so I don't know.
But it came out during the pandemic.
So in terms of a financial failure, it's like you.
I always say you can't judge a film that came out during the pandemic.
That's not fair, in my opinion.
And I haven't seen it, so I can't judge it from that perspective.
Mystique and Magneto were not originally intended to appear as Jennifer Lawrence implied in several interviews that she was done with playing Mystique.
Though she said in an interview that she had a change of heart as she didn't want fans to be confused if her character got the Chuck Cunningham syndrome treatment, where a character simply vanishes from a feature named after the removal of Chuck Cunningham in Happy Days, the 1974 show.
I mean, that just sounds like she didn't want to do it.
It sounds like a contractual obligation or a lot of money was like, hey, do a few scenes and it'll give you this much.
One of the two, but it did not sound like she wanted to do it anymore.
Right.
This is the first X-Men film not to feature Wolverine in any capacity due to Hugh Jackman who had played the character since X-Men 2000, retiring from the role after Logan in 2017.
I was thinking that while we were watching.
I'm like, this is so sad not to see him.
The film takes place in 1992, the year the X-Men comics were relaunched with new costume designs and a new cartoon show, X-Men 1992.
Oh.
Remember that's what I said while we were reacting.
I was like 1992.
Well, I knew that, but I didn't know that it was a show, 1992.
That's what I said.
What were reacting?
See, Terry even told you guys.
She forgets things sometimes.
Ty Sheridan admitted shortly before the film's release that he wore a muscle suit throughout production instead of working out.
Ty, don't admit that.
Those are your muscles, dude.
All of that.
You did the Hugh Jackman thing.
Hans Zimmer wrote over 16 hours of music for the film.
I actually really like the music in this film.
Mom. Yeah, it's good. I mean, it's Hans Emery. He's a god. He's great. Phoenix was originally
conceptualized with a fury look for the film. It was revamped in post-production to look more
cosmic and also to avoid comparisons with Captain Marvel, which came out the same year for the
MCU. Okay. In her role as Mystique, Jennifer Lawrence is now actually older than Rebecca
Romaine was when she originally got the role in X-Men 2000. Oh, wow. Wow, that's
that is wild uh let's do like two or three more during a podcast director screenwriter simon
kinberg took responsibility for the film's negative critical reception stating that he was to blame
for the fact that audiences could not connect with the film however he pointed mostly at
disney for the film's commercial failure stating that it was their decision to release it just a few
weeks after avengers endgame furthermore in the wake of disney fox merger layoffs in the fox
marketing team led to serious delays in advertisement.
When Disney finally took over marketing duties, only two months of
advertisement remained before the release, where 10 months would be standard.
Interesting.
Okay.
All right.
Let's do, oh, a young rogue was supposed to be in the movie.
Olivia Munn was set to return as Siloq, but she did The Predator.
Sorry, Olivia Munn.
Let's do one or two spoilers.
Now we can read spoilers and not have to worry about Tedpool.
Thank you.
All right.
One or two spoilers and we're good.
At around the one hour and 14 minute mark,
the subway train crashing through the wall behind Magneto is a real train on a hydraulic rig.
It's amazing.
You did call that.
It was supposed to stop a few feet further back but traveled further than intended.
Knocking down some ceiling tiles very close to Michael Fastbender.
Fastbender, ever the professional, didn't even flinch.
and the shot made it into the finished film.
It should.
That's amazing.
That is crazy.
Wow.
You got to love like a happy accident because that could have been a really bad.
Oh, God.
Can you imagine if you read that one?
With stunts like that when it goes a little too far, people can die.
So I'm glad that it all worked out.
I love that piece of trivia.
Yeah, you got to keep rolling and you would hope that that makes it in the shot.
Agreed.
Which is great.
Agreed.
And that also shows you fast pender.
I mean, ever the professional.
also like he's Magneto in that moment because like Magneto would not flinch if something's coming
at him. Oh, not at all. Yeah, that's great. I mean, it kind of reminds me of I was
filming for a film called Psycho Storm Chaser. I'm walking down the stairs. I want my eyes to be
over the frame of camera. And as I'm walking down the stairs, I thought I was on the last step.
But I did not want my eyes to break frame. So I took a step thinking it was the last one. I still had two
steps to go. I fell down and broke my ankle. And I was like, if y'all don't use that shot,
you're dead to me. And of course, it's in the film. And I apologize. I'm sure there's
going to be comments saying this is what the aliens were called. They did mention it in the
film. I did see it for a second and it just escaped my mind because it was only, I think it was
one or two lines of dialing. They're called the debari, D-A-B-R-I, something like that. So
apologies. I'm sure any of you who have not made it and have already commented below, the
DeBari. Sorry.
Last one. At around 24 minutes, the mutant singing during the mutant school party, right?
The one you called the music video.
I actually like that sequence is Allison Blair, aka Dazzler, played by Halston Sage, rather.
She is a mutant from the comics who can change sound into light, a talent she used to further her pop singing, a singer career.
This was the character's cinematic debut.
I'm sure Coy was watching going, I know exactly who that is, because Coy just knows everything.
But yeah, hey, look, again, I wouldn't say it's the worst film I've ever seen.
I thought it was okay.
There were things I loved, or things I really liked about it and things I didn't care for.
Overall, but I still enjoyed it.
It was a fun reaction with Tara, of course.
