Let's talk now about four steps to success.
Number one, good ideas.
Learn to search for in catalog good ideas.
And I got a good note for you to take home.
Here it is.
All that you need is available.
Everything you need is available.
Every book you need's already been written.
I'm telling you.
Every idea you need to be in possession of,
I'm telling you it's out there.
But here's from ancient scripts and wise words.
It says, if you search you will find.
If you need ideas for your business, you've got to search for them.
If you need ideas for your health, you've got to search for them.
They don't just come by.
You've got to go to the library.
You got to go to church.
You got to go to the play and listen to the dialogue.
You got to go to the song and listen to the lyrics.
You got to go to the training.
You got to go to the class.
You got to go to the seminar.
You got to go to the lecture.
You got to go to a gathering of people of substance who have something to say.
You got to go to search.
Gotta go look.
Rarely does a good idea interrupt you.
Rarely.
So here's how it could also read.
In order to find,
you must search like you're doing today.
I congratulate you for being here today,
spending this kind of money and this kind of time.
On the search, on the look.
And I promise you, you'll be rewarded today.
By searching you find.
So keep searching for good ideas.
Next, log your good ideas.
We last mentioned, don't trust your memory, jot it down.
I've been keeping these journals now all my life.
My journals now are sort of a composite of my life.
Little cheapy ones when I was broke.
Now expensive ones now that I'm rich.
So if you looked at all my journals, right, several shelves full of journals,
you could say, oh, here's when he was broke, right?
Little journals that cost, you know, 50 cents.
But I have kept up this process now all these years.
key phrase to take home, be a serious student.
Be a serious student of life.
Be a serious student of people.
Be a serious student of enterprise.
Be a serious student of financial independence.
Be a serious student of how to build a financial wall around your family
nothing can get through.
Be a serious student of how to develop all of your skills,
all of your abilities.
Be a serious searcher for truth.
Never cease your quest for nothing.
knowledge. That's the first step to success is learning. In the previous seminar we said,
the first step to life change is education. The truth will set you free. You don't need crystals
pyramids, I don't think. You don't need to anchor. You don't need to focus. You don't need to
discover the child within. The ancient script says the truth, the truth will set you free. Here's
what the truth will do. Help you correct old errors in judgment.
that maybe caused your poor health, caused you to be broke,
caused you not to be financially independent.
The truth will help you to correct those old errors in judgment.
Now, here's what else the truth will do.
Help you set up new disciplines to correct from the old path to the new path.
And all you've got to do sometimes is just correct a few things.
And the difference in one year will be staggering.
The difference in three years will be amazing.
The difference in five years will be overwhelming.
In 10 years you'll be bonkers.
Just a bit of correction.
One, cleaning up old errors.
Two, establishing a new direction.
We mentioned, right, an apple a day,
starting a new process of developing better health
and you're on a new track.
A walk around the block and you're on a new track.
Then make this note.
Direction determines destination.
And you can't change destination overnight,
but you can change direction overnight.
And if you change some direction overnight,
I'm telling you,
In one week it'll make a difference.
In one year, the difference will be amazing.
So that's what ideas are for.
Be a collector of good ideas.
The second step to success is good plans.
When you attend further of my lectures, time management,
how to think on paper, developing a game plan,
we talk about it more in detail.
I haven't got time to do it on this occasion.
But you've got to develop good plans.
If you've got a vision, now you need a good plan
to pull it off.
If you've got a dream, you need a plan to make it work.
If you want to be healthy, now you've got to have a plan.
Once the vision is clear, now you've got to commit it to plan, step by step, hour by hour, day by day, discipline by discipline, act by act.
So the first step is good ideas.
The second step to success is good plans.
Here's number three.
Step to success.
Learning to handle the passing of time.
What an important one this is.
learning to handle the changing of seasons,
learning to handle the changes in life,
from the industrial age to the information age,
TPN on the cutting edge.
Some things are being phased out.
Plenty of new things are being phased in.
In fact, let me give you my definition of the 21st century.
Here it is.
Unprecedented opportunity and keen competition.
No telling.
the opportunity in the 21st century.
It's going to be staggering.
But here's what else is important,
21st century, keen competition.
It's a global village now.
The competition is not just neighbor to neighbor,
not just community to community,
not just business to business, office to office,
company to company.
Now the competition is global.
So whatever you do,
learn some backup skills.
You know, the buggy makers should have had some backup skills
When they came and said, you know, it's over.
Buggy Maker said, no, we got this new model and say,
no, no, you don't understand.
We don't need any more.
So now you've got to be ready for the transition.
I'm asking you in the next five years, get ready for multiple transitions.
Kids have got to get ready for multiple transitions
as we move into new industries, new products.
as we develop new ways, new means, new possibilities to make a decent society.
Now, not just for us, but for the rest of the world.
Because how the rest of the world does, I'm telling you, in the 21st century is going to greatly affect how we do.
No longer can we just, you know, sit over here with oceans on either side, this side of the world.
We were spared in World War II.
We were spared in World War I.
We will not be spared in the 21st century.
Whatever happens to the world is going to come close to hand.
Yes, it was important to go to Haiti.
Yes, it was important to chase Saddam Hussein out of Kuwait.
It is going to be important globally.
The task is on for the president.
The task is on for the Congress to come up with ideas to make it a more stable world,
even though the ethnic clashes are vicious.
Last year I was in, year before last I was in Barcelona.
Big convention.
And the Croats and the Muslims and the Serbs were singing,
heal the world holding hands.
in the convention and at home,
their relatives were killing each other.
It's a strange world.
And yes, Hitler's gone, Mussolini's gone.
Stalin with bloody hands is gone.
But we've still got a troublesome world to deal with.
Man's inhumanity to man, hostility to each other.
And it's going to take a while to solve
to the best we can, if we can, we hope we can.
At least we've backed away from the Holocaust of nuclear catastrophe.
But we've got some challenges.
But I'm telling you, there never were better tools to handle these challenges
if we don't get lazy, if we don't let it slide,
if we don't put it off on someone else to get the job done,
say, surely somebody else will take care of that, take care of that.
Some things get lost and hoping somebody else will take care of.
Even when it comes to information, like we're going to beam into the home.
You know, sometimes the school hopes the parents will do it,
and the parents hopes the school will do it,
and the school hopes the church will do it,
and the church hopes the community will do it,
and the community hopes the parents will do it,
and some of this stuff gets lost in the pass around,
hoping other people will take care of it.
Here's what we all have to do.
Each take responsibility for the gathering of ideas
and getting ready with multiple skills to lead our family
by the hand into the 21st century,
unafraid, challenged but unafraid,
confronted but unafraid, transition, but with spirit, heart, soul, confidence,
that by language and by spirit and by skill and by commitment to each other,
as a nation, as a group, as a company, as an industry, as a community,
we'll be ready for the 21st century.
So let us learn how to handle these transitions.
They're going to come more frequently.
Be patient to handle the passing of time.
Just take some patience.
You got to be patient.
You got to give time.
You got to give time to the corporate work of art that's in the making.
I told Jeff last night, I said, Jeff, you've got some time.
But you're the leader.
What a responsibility?
Jeff asked.
I said, Jeff, somebody asked me the other day,
what is the future of TPN?
And I said, Jeff Olson.
He said, whoa.
Somebody's got to step out front.
Somebody's got to be the point person.
Now, I'm asking you to do the same thing.
In your home situation, in your organization situation, step out front, accept the responsibility.
Lead us through the transition.
The great prayer was, lead us not into temptation, deliver us from evil, looking for the kingdom and the power.
Patience.
Takes time to build an orchestra.
It takes time to develop harmony.
It takes time to well together people from multiple backgrounds, but single purpose.
It takes time to develop the team.
It takes time to put it together.
So give your project time, give your organization time, give your kids time.
Here's one of the most important.
Give yourself time.
Don't cut yourself off too soon.
Boy, it's easy to say, oh, I'll never learn that.
You know, that's out of my reach.
Looks like I'm not going to be able to do that.
Hey, give yourself some more time.
Don't be impatient with yourself.
We were all impatient as kids, right?
If you try to tie your shoes as a kid and it doesn't work,
you say, well, forget that.
Say, no.
You can't go through the rest of your life with your shoes untied.
Come on, have some patience.
Have some patience.
You can learn it.
I was impatient with myself
in making some of those transitions
from blaming others to blaming myself.
I'm telling you, it took a while.
But I finally got that job done.
I'm asking you to have patience with yourself.
Two things will wreck your chances for the future.
One is impatience and the other.
is greed. Let's just talk for a moment about greed. I'm telling you contrary to the movie Wall
Street. Contrary. Greed is not good. The great speech that was given in the movie Wall Street
says greed is good. It drives the market and everybody benefits from greed. Absolutely not true.
Let me give you my opinion. Greed is evil. Here's what greed does. Greed hopes for something for
nothing. Greed hopes for more than its share. Greed hopes for something.
something of benefit at the expense of others.
Should be legislated against.
Some people should go to jail.
We've got antitrust and some other things.
To legislate against greed at the high level, but beware of power at all levels.
Power tends to corrupt.
Ultimate power tends to corrupt ultimately.
And it doesn't matter if it's a two-year-old or if it's Stalin.
Power tends to corrupt.
We must all drive those evil tendencies into the smallest corner possible in our lives.
Here's the greatest challenge of life to become the most.
of the good in us and the least of the bad.
But greed is one thing we don't need.
True ambition, yes, we do need.
I put together a new album for Nightingale Cohnut.
Here's the title, the power of ambition.
True ambition holds for something at the service of others,
not at the expense of.
Now, next is patience.
Americans probably have to work on this harder than anybody else.
Patience.
In our push-button society,
Americans, right, if we don't get a dial tone
in a second or two, bam, bam, bam,
Operator operator what's wrong in his phone?
Telling Americans are almost out of control.
It's fun to watch Americans in Spain where it takes time to get anything done.
You start your call in the morning, get it finished in the afternoon.
Never mind bang, bang, operator operator.
Some Americans pack up and leave.
Can't handle the change of pace in Spain.
Somebody once said in America, the shortest period of time is the period of time between
when the light turns green and you hear the first horn.
horn. Shortest period of time. Impatience. It can be devastating. I got a motor home, right? I got a motorcycle. I ride the Jeep trails. Clear lake up on top. And in my motor home, sometimes, you know, it takes a little longer to get up on the freeway. I've missed the gear once. Taking me an extra couple, two, three seconds, you know, get it going. The guy behind me loses it. Blassing the horse screaming out the window. Get that big blankety blank thing off the road. Can't wait. Passes me. Passes me.
on the right, shaking his fist out the window as he goes by me, two wheels off in the landscaping,
throwing rocks and gravel going by, fish tailing out in front of me, telling you the guy lost
it for about for three seconds. Guess what? I get in my car and I get behind one of these motorhomes.
Same stuff happens, right? What is that hot stuff that starts down here? Boom, explodes.
Patience, patience, have some patience. The orchestra will come together. Have some
some patience, the organization will finally produce, have some patience. It takes a little patience
to help somebody walk out of darkness and delight, to walk away from the shadows into success,
to walk away from pennies and head for fortune. It takes a little patience. So have some patience
with the passing of seasons and the transition. You've got to have patience from the spring till
the fall, harvest time, patience through the summer. Next step to success is the solving of problems.
And that's what life is all about, taking on the challenges and see if you can solve it.
Haven't got anything, see if you can change that.
Haven't got enough money, see if you can change that.
Want to be financially secure, see if you can pull that off.
Solve the problem.
That's what life is all about, solving the problems, the challenges.
Here's the best way to solve problems.
One, boil it down to its smallest equivalent.
Take it piece at a time.
I met Neil Armstrong one time.
First man on the moon, Neil's got a good talk.
Neil said, going to the moon.
was just a matter of solving a couple of problems.
Number one, how to get there.
He said, just jot that down.
Figure it out.
Next problem.
How to get back.
And he said, you've got to be smart enough not to leave
till you've solved both problems.
Boy, that's good advice.
Some of my business enterprises, right, in years gone by,
I didn't, you know, I just said,
how to get in and I just jumped in.
I should have
how to get out.
Let me give you a little clue on solving problems.
Sometimes it's good to take it out of your head and put it on paper.
Draw a line down the center of a piece of paper and put the problem here.
Just lay it out.
You say, well, isn't that negative thinking?
Yes, you've got to do some negative thinking.
You've got to pawn to the negative side.
The problem, you can't come up with good answers unless you pawned to the problem.
Now, you don't have to live in it.
You don't have to dwell on it.
You don't have to spend a year on it.
But sometimes it's a good idea to list the problem then say, is that all?
Well, no, here's a couple of others. Let's get it all in there so we can come up with good answers.
Now on this side of the paper, we got answers and solutions.
And now let me give you three questions to ask to solve most any problem.
Question number one.
What could I do?
There's no use going any further if you can solve it.
And best you try to solve it yourself before you go any further.
Why?
Not only do you need the solution.
You need the muscle.
Here's what we teach in sales training.
More important than a sale is the skill of sales, right?
Skills are better than sales.
Sales are temporary.
Skills are forever.
Don't you say, I need the next sale, I need the next sale.
Hey, you need the next skill.
Skill will give you plenty of sales.
So make sure your sales are leading to skills.
Then skills lead to plenty of sales.
So you say, what could I do?
Then we suggest that you develop
We can develop working papers, we call them.
I could do number one, I could do number two, I could do number three.
You just list some of the possibilities.
Then you say, well, number three, that would take too long.
I can see right now.
Number two, I'm not sure.
Number one, hey, this, maybe my first inclination was right.
Working papers, what could I do?
Now if that doesn't do it, here's number two.
What could I read?
There might be a book on your problem.
There might be a book on your challenge for the moment.
Somebody might have spent a lifetime, put it in a book,
put in capsule form a book that could have some answers for you.
So you start making the search, maybe through your own journals, start reading,
start reading the material, somebody's experiences. Here's book one,
say this guy's crazy. Book number two, not sure. Book number three sounds pretty good.
Maybe this is it. Take some time, what could I read?
Read in a timely manner. I have a dear friend who you have a dear friend who
today who read a book too late.
He lost a beautiful lady.
What a lady.
Sophisticated superstar,
unique, beautiful,
unbelievable lady.
And he lost her.
And later he came to me and said, you know, Jim,
I found a book in my library that I think would have saved my marriage.
A book called How to Live with Another Person by Niroberg.
Good book.
Kenny said, you know, I think that book would have saved my marriage, but guess when he read it?
After, I'm asking you, be diligent.
If you've got a problem, be diligent.
If you've got a challenge, be diligent.
Don't cross your fingers and say, oh, well, hope may be.
Number one, search your own head.
Search your own experience.
Search your own heart and soul.
See if you can't come up with the answers.
But if that won't do it, I'm telling you, go on a search.
futures are too valuable.
The quest is too important
not to take the time to make the search for ideas.
Now if that still doesn't do it,
here's number three, who could I ask?
Now let me give you some points under asking.
Here's number one.
Don't hesitate to ask.
It says if you ask what?
You'll receive chances are excellent.
Don't hesitate to ask, but now make this additional note.
Don't ask first.
Go through these steps.
first. Don't go here first. Why? You need the muscle. You need the exercise. You need the skill. You need the process developed. The strength of the process as well as the answer. So go to number one and number two before you go to ask. But then if you can't find the answer any other way, now then, don't hesitate to ask. Go for it. But see, now when you ask, you've got some working papers to show. The person you ask, you say, hey, look at my working papers. I thought of this, thought of this, I couldn't find the answer. And I've read this and I've read this and I've read this. And I still.
can't find the answer. Now will you help me? You can't believe how much help you can get from people who first of all want to know were you willing to help
yourself. That's the clue. And the reason is because we need the muscle. Haven't we heard the expression?
Better to be taught how to fish than to be given a fish. Why? Given a fish is temporary
learning to fish is permanent. It's okay to ask for help. Here's two legitimate questions. Make these notes. Two legitimate questions.
Number one question, will you help me?
That's a legitimate question.
Hey, if time is running out and you've got no hope left
and things are dark and it's, you know,
you got to get it immediately, don't hesitate to ask for help.
Legitimate question, will you help me?
But make sure the second question is not,
will you help me again?
Here's the second legitimate question.
Now will you teach me?
First, yes, will you help me,
but now will you teach me so I can help myself and others.
Sometimes it starts to change reaction.
When you help somebody to help themselves,
it starts to change reaction.
No, tell them how many they'll be able to help.
Sometimes the students far surpass the teacher.
Tony Robbins used to work for me, starting when he was 17, 18, 19.
Now Tony, we're right on by me like a rocket.
Talks to millions.
You never know who you're talking to.
Here's another key point.
Respect everybody.
You never know who you're talking to.
You say, oh, this person will take it around the world.
They don't show up at the third meeting.
And someone you said, oh, least likely that person may blossom like a garden.
Be a powerful.
Respect everybody.
You never know who you're talking to.
Key phrase for recruiting, all prospects are equal.
Give everybody the benefit of the story.
Then it remains to be seen who takes it around the world and who drops it going across the street.
But don't hesitate to ask.
But now when you do ask, see, can you see now how much easier it's going to be to get the answer?
people having the confidence.
Even sophisticated capable people
don't want to waste their information
and their answers on people that haven't tried to help themselves
why it could very well be wasted.
But if you can show that you tried to help yourself,
you'll get the answers.
Thank you for listening.
