Starting point is 00:00:35 Caps colon TBP. Okay. We're running this. This is running, I think, June 22nd. So hopefully Team USA is up to O. Yeah. Just trying to lock down that one seat in the group. That's right.
Starting point is 00:00:49 Gut check. Is that what you think will happen? I think they will get through the group. Somehow. It's encouraging. A little prediction from CR. We are still doing from Hell Month, and we've done really good from Hell movies,
Starting point is 00:01:01 but we want to do one bad one. And domestic disturbance is next. It's the rewatchables presented by Fandul predicts. Starting point is 00:02:04 What happens when everything goes sideways, when everything's in place? It's like a basketball team where it's like, oh, we spend all this money. We have these stars. Steve Nash, Dwight Howard. Yeah, it's the 2012 Lakers. You're in the lottery.
Starting point is 00:02:17 You don't know what happened. And yet it still ends up being a rewatch. And that is domestic disturbance, a movie that I implored both of you to watch again. I'm so relieved that this is how you're framing it. Because if you were going to come in and be like, this has been one of my favorites for years, I fire this up, you know, like, it is, it is very bad. But it is entertaining in an exciting way for a variety of reasons, but one of which is like, it's got a bunch of guys where you're just like, why did this guy decide to do this movie?
Starting point is 00:02:47 So let me ask you this. Do you think it's bad or do you think it's stupid? Because I think there's a little bit of a distinction, and I think that it's weirdly not bad. Like, I think everybody's doing decent enough work. It's good, bad. But it's stupid. You know, it's just one of those movies where we're going to talk about this.
Starting point is 00:03:04 You can just feel the several dozen minutes that have been carved out of it. And so it just often feels incoherent. This is like Craig Cameron in a studio. This is the only movie where I'm like, yeah, they could have used 10 more. There's definitely references to things where you're like, did that happen? Like, what was going on? It's awesome.
Starting point is 00:03:23 It just leaves you asking a lot of questions. It's a good, bad movie. I think one of the reasons it's rewatchable for me, and I've watched this movie a bunch of times. I have no idea why. Because it's 15 minutes long. Yeah, it's over an 88 minutes. The credits hit it in 79 minutes.
Starting point is 00:03:37 It's crazy. It's unbelievable. The decisions in the, and like trying to figure out, when did Vince Vaughn realize this wasn't going to be the one Travolta gives up about an hour in. Travolta is really trying for about an hour. And in the last half hour, he's like, fuck, how many more days?
Starting point is 00:03:56 My plane is docked at the airport? There's just dumb characters. It has a lot of the From Hell staples. But we're going to get to that. But the 2000s, this is when From Hell starts to go sideways. We had this really good run that starts with fatal attraction into the 80s. Basic Instinct kicks in the air. that we're doing.
Starting point is 00:04:18 We're the good son and that rocks the cradle, single-wave female. We've the breakdown. We've the glory years. And in 2000s, they kind of ran out of ideas, but they realized,
Starting point is 00:04:28 let's keep doing this. And that's when you get domestic disturbance. You get changing lanes. Oh, yeah. With Sam Jackson and Ben Affleck, the road rage from hell. You get one-hour photo
Starting point is 00:04:38 with Robin Williams. Pretty weird movie. Serial killer from hell, though, are all serial killer. But like friendly photo guy. Yeah. Photo guy. Photo developer guy from hell.
Starting point is 00:04:48 Photo developer guy from hell. The best one of all these from this decade is Disturbia, which I actually think is pretty good, and you could talk me into doing this summer. Neighbor from Hell? Yeah. You like that movie. Great movie.
Starting point is 00:04:59 It's a rear window remake. Yeah. Shia, like right before, I mean, the wheels have been coming out for 20 years. He does Disturbia and Eagle Eye. You know, he's trying. Yeah, it's all right. Transformers, obviously.
Starting point is 00:05:09 Yeah. Perfect Stranger. Hallie Barry and Bruce Willis. Just kind of came and went. Really bad movie. You know where it didn't. Honestly, I don't even know if I know that movie.
Starting point is 00:05:18 You know where it didn't go from, though? Tube. How many of these films are on Tubey? I think everyone I mentioned is on Tubey. You're such a real one. You're just like, we're on Netflix, and I'm still going to go, Tooby. There's Netflix caliber, and then we're down here with Tube.
Starting point is 00:05:36 And Tubebis like, here's a thumbnail with Halle Berry and Bruce Willis. Okay, so why did this happen, I think is a good question to ask. There's one more I have, though. Okay, good. Lakeview Terrace, 2008. Sam Jackson, neighbor from hell. It doesn't like the interracial couple that moved next door. It could be the last from hell,
Starting point is 00:05:52 and then Dark Night comes along and cleans up hell, you know? That's right. That's right, Joker from hell. But so you can kind of understand why these movies start to pop, right? You can be like, well, there's like the AIDS crisis and movies like single white female and this idea of like some foreign presence coming in and changing your life. Or you can say that there's like class anxiety and the yuppie moment in the late 80s that is kind of driving some of this.
Starting point is 00:06:17 But then as it goes on, is it just that the ideas get squeezed out and there's not any good ones? Like, this is a stepfather from hell movie. Which, by the way, we'd already done with the stepfather with Terry Quinn. That's what I was going to say. Part of the problem is you're just redoing the same kind of themes that we've already seen in other movies. I think the reason they kept, there's two reasons they kept going. I think it's fun as an audience member to watch people make dumb decisions where you're just like, how do you not realize?
Starting point is 00:06:44 Why aren't you listening to your son? Yeah. That's just fun as an audience member. And then the other thing is, I think people saw like what happened for Michael Keaton with Pacific Heights and like Glenn Close and Fiddle Attraction. Like to zag the other way with a From Hell character is like a good career move.
Starting point is 00:07:02 First star, yeah, Jennifer Jason Lee and single-war female. So like you can see like Vince Vaughn thinking, yeah, it's been five years since swingers. I got to take a couple swings. Maybe I'll play like the evil stepfather guy. This would be good for me. And then he probably realizes, what? 10 minutes in, fuck.
Starting point is 00:07:17 Yeah, but then you turn out to be Patrick Bergen in sleeping with the enemy, and then you're never heard from again. Yeah, right. That's the other issue with this is sometimes you, if you're not a star, if you're a star, if you're a star, I think you can move in and out of one of these roles.
Starting point is 00:07:31 And he was at this critical, I don't know if you want to talk about Vaughn now, but he's at a really, really critical juncture of his career where six years have gone by since the thing that made him a big star, and he clearly had ambitions to be a serious actor. That was what he wanted to do.
Starting point is 00:07:47 He wanted to do dramas. He wanted to do thrillers. Look at every single movie he chooses after Swingers. Swingers, Lost World Jurassic. He's like the fifth guy in that. Clay Pigeons, Psycho, the Cell, Domestic Disturbance, and Maid. Those are all thrillers. And then Maid, which is his...
Starting point is 00:08:04 Made is the, like, I give up. The Favreau come back. It's his reunion of Favro. But if you watch that movie, it's just as much a crime movie as it is a funny buddy comedy. And you can see, like, what he thought he was going to do. And then after this movie, and after this movie, And after this movie bombs?
Starting point is 00:08:16 Well, what did he make in 2002? Is it Dodgeball? Nothing. Oh. He does disturbance and made in 2001. Nothing in 2002. O3 is old school. And the light bulb goes on.
Starting point is 00:08:30 Oh, this is what I am. I'm actually like comedy Vince Vaughn. And then it's Darski and it's Darski. Comedy leading man and then he's off. He makes like nine in a row. Yeah. And then he goes back to the top. I mean, you know, he ends up being the breakup and stuff like that
Starting point is 00:08:41 where he's headlining huge movies. In 2005, when the, and the breakup, is a pretty flawed movie. But he's also dating Aniston, post-Brad Pitt. All of a sudden, he's an A-plus Lister. Like a live comedy show that he was like touring. Yeah, yeah. He was an A-plus Lister.
Starting point is 00:08:55 In O-1, it felt like his career was going to end soon. And it was like, man, I feel bad for Double Down Trent. I don't know if this is going to happen for him. But he kind of figured out how to flip it and use that schick thing as like his comedy persona and then he was off. It's really funny, though, because there's something in the character of this movie that reminds me a lot of Trent where like Trent is always performing.
Starting point is 00:09:18 He's always doing his bit. He's always trying to pump up Mikey. He's always, you know, he's always got this like false energy, this bravado. And he's kind of doing that in the first half of this movie where he's trying to connect with Danny.
Starting point is 00:09:29 When he's having a catch with him, when he's just like, hey, want to build me some boats? Like he has it. He's often talked about in relationship to comedies how often he will sign up for a project and then the studio starts talking about how it needs to. be PG-13.
Starting point is 00:09:45 And, you know, he had grown up, and he had, like, all the movies that we love when we were growing up, there was something a little bit illicit about them. Yeah. And I think, I can't remember if he was talking about the internship or whatever. But it was something where you can actually see the roots of that problem in this movie, because there's an R-rated kind of just more disturbing version of domestic disturbance that actually could be kind of fucked up and interesting. But they'd just shave down the edges too much and they sand it down and they make it into a PG-13 movie
Starting point is 00:10:13 that never really bothers anybody, you know, but it's like, you can see how screwed up his relationship with Danny could have been and how weird it is and him being just like, it's a bad dream, you know? I have a lot of ideas for this later. I think that's... I just think PG-13 is a death sentence.
Starting point is 00:10:32 Do we think that they shot them and cut them out? I do. There's an 111-minute version of this movie that doesn't exist, basically. Yeah, they cut... There's a whole story behind it where... I have it. It was supposed to be, like, end of 2001.
Starting point is 00:10:49 9-11 happens. Paramount has to rush Zoolander up because Ed Burns has sidewalks of New York. It's their big September movie. And they can't do it because it's New York. They move Zoolander up. I saw Zoolander in the theater in Boston maybe two weeks after 9-11
Starting point is 00:11:06 and people just weren't ready for a comedy. Yeah, it didn't do well. It was a weird vibe. Yeah. Even though that movie's beloved now. So they push this movie up to like October and they decide it needs to be shorter and they just chopped 22 minutes from it. Now, the counter would be should this movie have had 22 more minutes? But the thing they did, they did that and they did the PG-13 thing.
Starting point is 00:11:28 And you can see like there's a lot of times they're saying fuck, but they're changing it to don't fool with me, Chris. Yeah. Who says don't fool with me? Well, the weird thing is then he goes, you're a fucking liar, Danny. So it's like they have a number of. bombs that they couldn't... Yeah, yeah. When you... So you only know Vince Vaughn
Starting point is 00:11:46 from the comedy Vince Vaughn. So when you see him like trying to think he, this was a career path for him, is it like amusing? Certainly amusing. I think when he's doing a lot of, like, when he's playing baseball,
Starting point is 00:11:58 he is kind of comedy Vince Vaughn in this movie. Like when he's like, I don't want to catch it up here, I don't want to catch it over here, I want to catch it down here. Yeah. But I actually think that... I don't think in a vacuum...
Starting point is 00:12:07 He's such a good athlete, why he's sort of throwing him to throw. I think in a vacuum, Vince Vaughn's not bad in this movie as like a villain. I think he's, if this movie were made right and there was 15 more minutes in it, I don't think he's bad. He's not the problem in the Psycho Remake or Clay Pigeons or the Cell. Like, it's not that he's a bad actor.
Starting point is 00:12:27 It actually is just that he's not exploiting what he's so amazing at. He's like Agro Chevy Chase. That's his persona. He's like fast talking, smarter than nobody else in the room, kind of a dickhead, but very lovable. That's his comic persona. It's an amazing persona. In old school, that's some of the funniest shit
Starting point is 00:12:44 you're ever going to see in a movie in the 2000s. But you can feel him like really trying to broaden his horizons to try to be a much more serious kind of performer. And like, it's just not what he's best at. And like, you can feel the acceptance in the late 2000s of him just being like,
Starting point is 00:13:00 you know what, this just makes more sense for me. He basically does that until True Detective Season 2. Right? Like when he... And now he's kind of pivoted back where he's doing, you know, cell block 99. and dragged across concrete.
Starting point is 00:13:13 And he's trying to go back to the hard-edged thriller stuff that he really likes in his career, which I respect. Sure. But it wasn't going to make him a star. You can also prop your career up in different ways. His big thing now is this show on Apple called Bad Monkey, which I personally don't love the show, but it is a perfect Vince Vaughn vehicle
Starting point is 00:13:31 because it's like Vince Vaughn walking around Florida, solving crimes, but making jokes. Right. You know. Yeah, usually the people hit as a comedian, to have like seven, eight years. And then they decide, I want to, I could be a dramatic actor too.
Starting point is 00:13:47 Vince Vaughn, like, inverted it. Yeah. He had swingers. Then he's like, I, take me seriously. And then people were like, you're double down Trent, what's going on here? And then he flipped it the other way. So, I don't know,
Starting point is 00:13:59 you look at his 0-3 through 2010, him and Farrell are like the, they're at the head of all that shit with Apatow. They're in the most movies. They're making cameos and other people's stuff. And I just, I don't think he wanted to accept that. I think when you look at Vaughan and Favreau from Swinger, we talked about this, when we did rewatchables,
Starting point is 00:14:19 thinking of like the potential of those guys in that movie, and then thinking how their careers turned out, it's actually kind of incredible. Because even when they made Made in 2001, which I saw, it was disappointing. Yep. I liked those guys. I felt like I had to see it.
Starting point is 00:14:33 But it felt like it was like kind of over. Not aging well with the amount of ditty going on in that film. Well, true, true. But when you look at it now, like Favreau is one of the most successful directors who had last 20 years, and Vaughn was one of the most successful comedy actors. So it somehow worked out great for them.
Starting point is 00:14:49 It was such a weird thing with Swingers. I wonder whether or not Vince Vaughn coming out of that movie was like the thing that people will love is me playing video games, you know, and being like, I'm going to make your guy bleed or whatever. Who's the big winner? Mikey wins. He probably thought it would be some of the more dramatic beats
Starting point is 00:15:08 or some of the more like classic movie star beats if that movie got seen at all. But that's in the text of the movie. Like those guys are trying to be actors in Hollywood. They're trying to be Paul Newman. Like that's the whole point of the movie. People they dreamed of being. But the stuff that is the most fun
Starting point is 00:15:23 is when they're just hanging out being friends and almost feels like they're improvising those scenes where they're at the diner or they're playing, you know, NHL. Like that stuff just felt like their real personalities and that's what people wanted from them. But you're right though. Like if they had 100 tries at their career,
Starting point is 00:15:37 are they in the 99th percentile of how well it worked out? It's crazy. The other thing is he never figured out like there was, like you talked about agro chubby chase. That actually would have worked really well for this movie. Like if he had been this like wheeler dealer, like charismatic guy and everybody in the town loved him, but like John Trouleton, Danny the little boy were like,
Starting point is 00:15:59 they were the only ones that knew he was full shit. But we didn't even really see the charismatic side of him either in this. Only in like the baseball catch scene. and he gets that Chamber of Commerce thing. But for the most part, he's kind of playing it straight and sinister. And it's a lot of shots of him. You're brushing your teeth.
Starting point is 00:16:17 And it's like, oh, Dan, Vince is in the bear. They use his height. Like, they use some things about him that really work. But, yeah, like, the things that work the best in this movie are the two scenes with him in Bishemi. Because... Yeah, that should have been its own movie. It's a suggestion of a whole other universe,
Starting point is 00:16:36 of a whole other world. they seem so comfortable together. Bushemi grounds this movie and makes it feel like it's part of like a larger world. And yeah, then the stuff with both Terry Polo and the kid is just kind of like this. This feels like I'm looking at a picture that takes place in a frame
Starting point is 00:16:54 so that I buy the frame at a department store. Yeah, I wrote down this movie's trying to be Evil Stepfather movie. It's basically an ABC after-school special of like the first ad trying to keep his relationship with his son. It's a murder mystery.
Starting point is 00:17:10 It's a boy that cried wolf. It's a boy that cried wolf. Nobody believes me movie. It's a child of divorce movie. And it's a little bit of a police procedural with one of the worst investigations of all time. Yeah, we checked out the incinerator. Nothing there.
Starting point is 00:17:24 Did you check his car? Yeah, couldn't find anything. Like, really? He was stabbed to death. Are there incinerators that incinerate bones? Do we know that that exists? Yeah, there's a couple still in L.A. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:36 Yeah. But it's like, it's a brickworks. Do they have, why would you need to, like, an industrial incinerate? Also, it's, it's always on the incinerator. It's just cooking 24-7. Yeah, it's like a pizza oven. It's just on. I would love to get a picture of, of Rick's holdings.
Starting point is 00:17:52 Because it's like, oh, I just bought a hotel. And I have a brickworks. Like, he's just, like, laundering all this money. Chamber of Commerce is like, say no more. Here's your word. The unintentional comedy in this movie is out of control. Terry Polo is the mom. This is a staple in these movies,
Starting point is 00:18:10 the dumb wife for the dumb mom who just doesn't see all the signs and then there's like the, oh, moment, which she has when she sees Vince Vaughn treating his burns. But we have that. We have all the times they try to do sinister Vince
Starting point is 00:18:26 from like the door closes and he's behind it or he's in the mirror. And then for me, Travolta in this movie it's a 10 out of 10. He's pouring his soul into this movie. The first hour, he is working so hard. And he's really likable.
Starting point is 00:18:44 He loves movies. He loves movies. He's about as likable as Tramolta can be in the movie. He really is likable. He's just like, man, this guy's just a great first dad. He's just a great role model. Yeah. Just wants to make some wooden boats.
Starting point is 00:18:55 Doesn't even care if he makes money on him. I actually think he's just like doing the exact wrong thing for the movie. The movie makes a lot more sense if he's like kind of a skeezy alcohol. Yeah, and bitter. And, like, a little more mad. But he's having these conversations with his girlfriend. And he's just like, gee, Willikers, if only my boy, can truly be happy. She's giving literally zero in those scenes.
Starting point is 00:19:18 The girlfriend. It's like, when Yee was working out against a chair. I'm no offense to the actress, but it's just like, it's John Travolta and, like, the NPC of actresses. Yeah. It's tough. They definitely save some money on that way. Yeah. He's really going for it and he really just wants to have a good relationship with his son.
Starting point is 00:19:42 The one moment in this movie that crystallizes that is when he goes up to the house because it's his day. And she's just like, yeah, sorry, he's not here. And he's like, okay. He walks away. And I'm like, what was the dramatic tension in this scene? Zero. There's so many scenes like that where you're like, why did they think this was the best version of the scene? Like, they go boating.
Starting point is 00:20:04 Terry Polo asked him Hey, can you take them Maybe take them for the boating I really want my son to like him It's like all right, I'll do it And they go boating And the scene's like 40 seconds It's like they couldn't have had
Starting point is 00:20:17 Any sort of character development Or some sort of them Trying to feel each other out Nothing. They just kind of bring the boat back in. There's a very funny moment Where Vaughn and Danny are You know, at the wheel of the ship,
Starting point is 00:20:30 the wheel of the boat And he's trying to explain Starboard to him and all the lingo. And Vaughn's like, yeah, let's just stick with left and right. It's such a dickhead. Like, his general tone is just like,
Starting point is 00:20:42 he's in wedding crashers, in domestic disturbance. It's really funny. The baseball catch scene is probably my favorite scene in the movie. It's the most rewatchable scene, for sure. It's just a tour. But it needed like four more scenes like that. Yeah, I agree.
Starting point is 00:20:54 It's basically, Danny doesn't get along with them. The only reason we really can think of is because they had that baseball catch. There was a whole, like, collection of things, coming of age, things they could have done together like Rick shows Danny
Starting point is 00:21:05 how to drive. Rick gives Danny his first beer. Oh yeah. Teach us about a smoke. It would have been a lot better. I mean, the movie is really weird because the kid who plays Danny is kind of likeable and normal, but they're treating him like he's like the town hoodlum. Was he normal? He seems
Starting point is 00:21:23 kind of boring psychotic. So that's definitely something that I think is cut out is like Danny's past lies. Yeah. Because the cop seems to fucking hate him. Yeah, exactly. And I'm like, what did he do to you? Yeah, he's like, this fucking kid did it again. I'm not wasting it more time of him. Yeah, did he call in like a fake bomb threat?
Starting point is 00:21:40 Like, what happened? He just seems like a mischievous teenager and not evil. They're like, oh my God, he threw a baseball through a window. Like, what kid didn't do that? Well, he does have a stowaway fetish. That's true. Which comes up, which finally manifests itself midway through the movie. So Travolta, this is one of the things I love about this movie is,
Starting point is 00:21:58 it's the end of Vaughn kind of thinking he could be this as an actor. it's the end of Travolta. Yeah, it really is. He's on a heater from Pulp Fiction 94 through 2000 where he makes basically three to four movies a year that are major movies. Pulp, Get Shorty, Broken Arrow, Michael, Phenomenon, She's So Lovely, Face Off, Mad City,
Starting point is 00:22:20 primary colors, thin red line, general's daughter. And that's all in like five years. And then Battlefield Earth happens in 2000. This is the sort of backwash of Battlefield Earth. Battlefield Earth people were like... I think he had made this in Swordfish before Back Battlefield had come out. Is that true?
Starting point is 00:22:36 No, I don't know of like technically, but it's like it would make sense that swordfish and domestic disturbance were like the last two like, this guy seems normal. Well, and he did lucky numbers after that too. So Battlefield Earth is like the...
Starting point is 00:22:48 That's the tipping point. I would say general... It starts with General's daughter, which is also not good. I would say General's daughter... General's daughter is an awful, awful movie. It's like just like a 10-minute rape scene. It's fucking awful.
Starting point is 00:23:00 It's vile nasty. I hate that movie. General's daughter, Battlefield this movie Swordfish and Basic is an all-time bad run. And some of it is like
Starting point is 00:23:12 he picked the wrong movies. Some of it is he's trying to like pivot his persona literally movie to movie where he's like in Battlefield's Earth that would be more like you know the villainous figure. But that was a Scientology movie.
Starting point is 00:23:22 Totally. Totally. But he's in this movie you can almost feel him reacting like Chris is saying. He's like, I'll be a warm dad. I'll be the hero in this movie. But him being a
Starting point is 00:23:31 hero actually makes the story not very dramatically interesting. Very early on in the movie, it's like, well, Vince Vaughn is clearly evil. As soon as Steve Buscemi shows up, you're like, okay, well, Vince Vaughn is a criminal and we're just waiting now to find out what happens. The movie doesn't really push you along the sense of like, well, is it actually Travolta
Starting point is 00:23:47 who's like an alcoholic and his son who's like kind of a degenerate teenager? And maybe this guy is a good guy. Why did they break up? Yeah. What happened in their marriage? No idea. Because he turns down like champagne in that first, when he's given the guy the boat in the beginning, the movie. and he's like, no, no, no, I won't do champagne. I'm going to have a beer.
Starting point is 00:24:03 And I was like, oh, it's because, like, maybe he's only on beer. He's not allowed to have anything else. But they never touch on it again. And he seems like a lovely guy. So it's unclear why Terry Polo would divorce this, like, totally nice boatmaker. And the girlfriend leaves him too. She's like, yeah, I've had enough for this. It's like, why, what do he do?
Starting point is 00:24:21 He seems like a great guy. He's just trying to make some wooden boats. And he's pretty involved in his son who claims he saw murder. He cares about his son? That's your issue? Fuckface? He still has, like, in the 2000. he still does like one out of every
Starting point is 00:24:32 five or six pops like it's be cool happens and then what's the other one he's good in taking a Pelham one two three the remake I like that he he became self-parody as chef in 2000 I think
Starting point is 00:24:47 you hit that zone as an actor where the general public's going what's going on with this guy and he's taking a lot of paycheck movies well this is when red box movies also come in right like it's yeah I mean I wanted to ask you guys a question about him, but he was just at Cannes when I was at Cannes.
Starting point is 00:25:05 With the craziest. His directorial debut, which is like a 62-minute movie about the first time he ever flew on a plane. Like, it's just the weirdest movie ever. It's on Apple, yeah. It's called One Way Perpeller Nightcoach. So, wait, everybody is like,
Starting point is 00:25:17 this is true cinema. Is that, like, a bit? It's a bit, yeah. But he was like, he wore a beret to every single screening of the film. He's got a weird mustache-co-tie situation. And everybody was like, why are you wearing this brain? He's like, well, I looked back at photos of old.
Starting point is 00:25:29 directors and they were all wearing berets. So I thought I too will wear a beret and become a director. Like, he's an eccentric guy to say the least. He's a nice. Yeah, he's a weird guy. But has there ever been an actor who's made more incredible culture-changing movies who's also made more bottom-of-the-barreled dog shit than John Travolta? Like, he has the widest chasm from Pulp Fiction, Saturday Night Fever, Greece,
Starting point is 00:25:58 like movies that change people's lives. lives to whatever the last 15 years of his career has been, where he's in stuff like Godi, which gets roundly destroyed, or, you know, dark vengeance, like a movie you've never heard of and never seen that is a Red Box movie. Well, now he's in the movies like my dad would mistakenly order on Amazon. Yeah. Because it's like, Travolta and Bruce Willis are in it.
Starting point is 00:26:18 And it's like from the last five years. And they're both in 42 seconds of the movie. Yeah. I think part of the problem with him, when your aspiration becomes to have your own private plane that you can fly around. You just start taking paycheck movies. And I think this happens to him
Starting point is 00:26:35 because in the research of it, it's like, Travolta flew his plane and he landed in Wilmington, North Carolina, and everybody loved him. And he still parks his plane there sometimes. I think for him, he's like, I'll do five a year. How much can I make enough to buy this Cessna?
Starting point is 00:26:51 Gas is expensive now, you know? It is. It's a really weird career, though. It's the weirdest. Because I go all the way back, to him when he was Welcome Back Cotter, when he was Barbarino. And then all of a sudden he was Saturday Night Fever, and he was the single biggest movie star we had. But then this comeback was like,
Starting point is 00:27:09 people loved Travolta in the 90s. Like I went to, all those movies I listed, I probably saw every one of them in the theater. Yeah. Including General's daughter, which I regret. I feel like movies that were big hits at that time, they don't hold, like, Phenomenon and Michael, those movies don't really hold up as well.
Starting point is 00:27:23 Like, they were really cool pitches where it was like, what if he has like a Sixth Sense style power? What if he's an angel? Like, they seemed interesting, but those movies don't really have, like, a cultural shelf life. But Pulp and Get Shorty, um,
Starting point is 00:27:37 for sure do. And the 70s movies still hold up. But it's a really... Face off. Face off is so dark. Face off, yeah. Yeah. I enjoy Broken Arrow.
Starting point is 00:27:45 I like Broken Arrow. You should watch a phenomenon with Craig, with, Liz. Okay. Watch it with your, your twin Craig. Watch it with Liz. It's an emotional one.
Starting point is 00:27:55 Okay. Um, it's got, I remember there was one sequence where... In Phenomenon? With Kira Cedric. Because he's dying and he's like, will you love me for the rest of my life?
Starting point is 00:28:07 And she goes, I'm going to love you for the rest of mine. Was that your attempt at doing Kira Sedgwick's mouth? Yeah. I'm going to love you for the rest of mine. It's one of those movies. My wife loves that movie. Not a great one.
Starting point is 00:28:20 Not a great one. Nora Ephron. Which one is he an angel in? That's Michael. Michael. And then in powder. Michael's bad. Is he in powder?
Starting point is 00:28:28 No, he's not in powder. He's not in powder. This would be a great quiz show where just it's like you try to guess the Travolta movie and what party plays. Terry Polo, brief run here for her coming off Meet the Parents. Big role for her. Probably excited when she got it. You're going to make a movie with John Travolta and Vince Vaughn. Yeah, they're going to be fighting over you.
Starting point is 00:28:46 Yeah. Yeah. She's just like a slice of American cheese. You're just like, that was fine. All right. She's not done any favors by this script. I don't know what she could have done with it, but yeah. It's kind of hard to judge in general any performance or character
Starting point is 00:29:00 because you're like, well, what's not in the movie? Like, what are we missing here? Matt O'Leary was the kid. He's actually good. He is. Screamplayed by Harold Colvin. He's probably still mad about all the stuff they cut. And then Harold Becker directed this movie.
Starting point is 00:29:14 Wait, isn't the screenplay by Lewis Colick? Oh, I wrote Harold Colvin down. Listen, might be Lewis Colick. I think it's Lewis Colic. Okay. Harold Becker. He wrote a couple of movies like this, I do. So he
Starting point is 00:29:27 One of the weird director careers we've had First big movie he directs He's 57 years old The Onion Field He does taps and vision quest Big Town The Boost You like the boost
Starting point is 00:29:40 Sean loves the boost You like the boost The boost I just thought for the first time this year It's amazing Yeah Sea of Love which we've done On the rewatchables
Starting point is 00:29:47 Yeah Malice which we will do On the rewatchables So wait vision quest we've done Sea of Love we've done Malice will happen I just want to say one of my takes is that
Starting point is 00:29:57 Harold Becker now has the same number of movies on the rewatchables as Stanley Kubrick. That's one of your takes. It's just a statement of fact. I don't know what category I put that in, but I put it in one of the category. City Hall? Yeah, I love the City Hall. You're a big City Hall fan.
Starting point is 00:30:12 You're the only one I know who likes City Hall. Oh, I love it. I don't remember Mercury Rise. Oh, families, mingling. I always, this isn't what he says, but I always hear him saying, I'm governing again. Mercury Rising
Starting point is 00:30:26 1998. What was that movie? Willis. Yeah, that's a thriller with Bruce Willis. This is the movie very before this. It might have been the only movie I didn't see in 1998. And then Domestic Disturments 01, never does another movie. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:30:38 Well, he was 57 when he started. Calls it a career after that. $75 million budget made $54 million. Yeah. How did this movie cost $75 million? Honestly. They built all those boats. But what was it?
Starting point is 00:30:51 What did they spend this money on? Honestly, Travolta probably got like $15 and $20 million for. Probably. Yeah. Probably. He's a huge star in 2000. Yeah. That said, if this movie costs $75 million today, it would be outrageous in 2001. I think part of the reason is there was an incident that will mention, let's mention it now.
Starting point is 00:31:12 This movie became famous because there was, this is the Stephen Segal shitting on himself a word for a most unbelievable anecdote from the actual film shoot. A huge fight in April 2001 in Wilmington, North Carolina. bar fight with Vince Vaughn, Steve Buscemi, and the screenwriter, Scott Rosenberg, who was there. Do we assume that Scott Rosenberg was there because he was on set rewriting?
Starting point is 00:31:36 Rewriting. Yeah. He's rewritten a lot of movies over the years. They get bombed at this bar, by according to the accounts, get into it with the locals. Somehow they end up going outside for some sort of fight. Well, there was a report that some guy's girlfriend starts talking to Vaughan.
Starting point is 00:31:49 believable. Yeah. I buy that. Yeah. There's some sort of fight, a local man, gets in a fight with Bouchemmy and slashes him with a knife, slashes his face, and everyone goes to jibs, stabbed them.
Starting point is 00:32:07 Whole thing. And if you watch the movie, they have to hide Bouchemie's face in a couple scenes. When you go see him in the hotel room, the whole side of the hotel room is dark for some reason. It's a completely different lighting scheme than the rest of the movie. It's actually pretty cool. And this movie became famous for that,
Starting point is 00:32:23 for this huge, huge fight. there was a trial, all kinds of shit. Yeah, it's the most well-known thing about the movie. It's a weird one. I was wondering how you guys felt about this. If you're a big movie star, are you going to the local dive bar? I don't think anymore.
Starting point is 00:32:38 I think this kind of ended that kind of stuff. You got in the cell phone era. Yeah. Yeah. This is like the tail end of that era. That's what I was thinking for sort of like what's aged the worst or best, like just participating in the social culture of a town while making a movie.
Starting point is 00:32:50 I think you still hear stories about like, I know of like a TV show where it's like the guy, from the TV show, like, just did very well for himself at bars around the city that they shot in. You know, like, that kind of thing still can happen. John Hamm? No.
Starting point is 00:33:08 But, yeah, when it's like a big movie star now, I don't think, like, Vince Vaughn and Steve Buscemi, whatever that is now would be, like, Austin Butler and Timothy Chalame could not go to, like, a bar in New Orleans. That's exactly what I'm thinking. Without, like, a bunch of security. And I guess like the Shaila Buffs do do that and then you see what happens.
Starting point is 00:33:30 Counter. How much fun would it be to go out with Vince Vaughn and Steve Buscemi in 2001? Yeah. I'm going. Yeah. Steve Bisham is like, hey, can you do Bichemi? I wasn't planning on it. Hey, Vince, why don't we get after it tonight?
Starting point is 00:33:45 I can't do it. Yeah, but they go out and they get after it and the whole thing. I remember I was in boss. The whole thing is they get stabbed. Well, sadly, then that kept going. I remember when they were filming the town in 2009, Ham was in Boston, and I was there for my book tour,
Starting point is 00:34:01 and I was out with my buddy, J-Bug, and Ham came out and met us with Rebecca Hall, the lady from the movie. Oh, yeah. And we had drinks, and the J-Bug was, you know, we were in a discreet part in Boston, and the J-Bug was just like, the Mad Men.
Starting point is 00:34:17 This is fucking crazy. It's the guy from Mad Men, he's come out of my TV. So I can imagine, like in Wilmington, North Carolina, and with all of these people that the celebrities aren't there that much and they just see the guy from swingers
Starting point is 00:34:30 and they're hitting on somebody's girlfriend. Real quick about this story, because if you read about it, it does sound like this guy's girlfriend started hitting on Vince Vaughn. The guy lost his mind about it. But it sounds like Bouchemey got Vince Vaughn's back and Vince Vaughn got Buccemi's
Starting point is 00:34:45 back. Like it does sound like two guys who are like I'm not fucking backing down. Yeah. Sure. I love it. Was this like Kuyfitz as well? wedding was like this. Bar fight downtown DC. With the locals like coming at you guys at all or no?
Starting point is 00:34:59 Like is that Danny Kelly? Hey, motherfucker. I heard what you said about the Chargers. Was there a lot of NFL media at Hyphitz's wedding? No. So Daniel Jeremiah wasn't getting in the mix.
Starting point is 00:35:10 You got in a knife fight with Daniel Jeremiah? That's move the sticks. That would be amazing. He's incredible with a blade. Hyphids would back you up in a bar fight. I would want him on my side. Yeah, for sure.
Starting point is 00:35:18 I played basketball. He'd get down into him. He's violent. He could also see Hyfitz getting us into a bar fight, which is the problem. Yeah. Well, we're going to have a ringer awards at the end of this year,
Starting point is 00:35:28 and one of the awards is ringer character of the year. And Hyfitz and Rahim Palmer are now in the finals for working out after the Knicks game in Sweden at 5 in the morning, going immediately to a gym and getting a lift in. Will Max and Rich be doing this awardful? Yeah, Max and Rich are going to host the award show. And Van's going to be upset that he wasn't nominated for more awards. He's like, what else do I need to do?
Starting point is 00:35:52 Roger Ebert for this movie, one and a half stars. So we've had last week. Wait, he liked it more than Goodson. Last week, Goodson was a half star when we recorded that. You haven't heard that yet.
Starting point is 00:36:03 This was one and a half. He wrote, The movie is a paid holiday for its director, Harold Becker. I say this because I know what Becker is capable of. He's so disappointed. Tough one.
Starting point is 00:36:16 And then he said, The final confrontation, so badly choreographed that I was not the least bit surprise when the studio called to say the Chicago critics had, quote, seen the wrong last reel. Would we like to see the correct reel on
Starting point is 00:36:30 Monday? I agreed eagerly expecting revised footage, but no. The only problem was the earlier real real was lacking the final music mix. So he must have been fucking furious. He had to go see this movie fucking like one and a half times. Imagine watching this twice in 72 hours. I would have been fucking pissed.
Starting point is 00:36:47 From hell. All right, we're going to take a break and then do most rewatchable or unwatchable scene. Are you one of those media strategy people clicking through slides, scrolling spreadsheets? Yes? Good. This is for you. Because on Spotify, there's an audience that's different, locked in, loyal, invested. They're called fans. Fans don't just listen to music. They feel seen by it, like it belongs to them. So when your brand shows up on Spotify, that's who you're talking to. And you're right next to artists like me, Lizzo. So, are you ready to talk to fans? Spotify advertising. You're among fans. All right.
Starting point is 00:37:24 Most rewatchable scene. I like when Rick goes boating with the boys. Definitely. And they're establishing Franks just, he's just a great first dad. Have you guys ever believed someone less than when Vince Vaughn says, I'm not trying to be his dad,
Starting point is 00:37:38 but I would like to be his friend. I can't hear him say a single thing and take him seriously. Yeah. I can only hear the rival newscaster from anchorman. man that he plays, you know? Vince Manteoth?
Starting point is 00:37:56 Yeah. Dorothy Mantuth is a saint. He's just doing that performance in this movie. As a child of divorce, I do love the first dad's second dad dynamic, right? Can we talk about this choice in this scene? Yeah. Because obviously Troultz's character is not thrilled
Starting point is 00:38:13 about the idea of taking his son's stepfather on a three-man boat tour. Yeah. Is there any situation in which you and either your mom or your dad and your step-parent would have an experience like that because that would be very unlikely
Starting point is 00:38:28 for me as a child of divorce. Yeah, as we've talked about divorce in the past, my situation was a little unusual because my parents would get together like for my, but they were pretty friendly. Okay. With that said, my dad and my stepdad and myself never would have gone out and done anything.
Starting point is 00:38:43 You guys would never do a socks game. Yeah, there's some sort of a line that I think. There's a missing element to this scene where it's like Travolta should have like been taking some rough waves and bouncing him around a little bit and just being like, what, I don't know. I mean, it's just,
Starting point is 00:38:57 it's choppy out here today. Right, right, right. Or the other thing, because with this, I mean, this movie misses so many things that would have been good. We almost needed a creative committee.
Starting point is 00:39:06 But, like, ultimately, like, you're the first dad and this new guy comes in. He's a swinging dick. He's taller than you. Like, he's younger than you. He's more successful than you.
Starting point is 00:39:16 Like, there's places that could go where Chavolota, even on the boat, like they should have made Vince Vaughn like oh this guy's actually amazing on boats and Travolta is doing something wrong and said let me step in here Travolta and he's just better at him
Starting point is 00:39:32 He didn't do the not right yeah yeah and it's just they didn't hit that for some reason I think part of the issue is that Rick Jack you know just the Vaughn character Rick Jack I just don't get I don't get anything about him
Starting point is 00:39:47 like I don't understand who he really is in any way. What were his investments? The movie doesn't explain, like, the crimes that he did, where he comes from, is he like a scumbag? Is he a guy who got caught up in a problematic situation?
Starting point is 00:40:02 And then it drove him crazy and it made him violent. It was a racketeering charge. But he skated. Took all the money. These guys did time. And then Ray gets out. These guys did time, but somehow didn't blow the whistle on him.
Starting point is 00:40:15 And he was able to escape because this is early internet. Right. You could just change your name. Right. Yeah, and just like, is he malevolent Or is he like forced to become more and more evil? Like it's a little, it's just all of that stuff is unclear. Or maybe not evil at all?
Starting point is 00:40:29 He just needed to get rid of Bishemi. Because they make this like he's a murderer. It's like, well, we only saw him murder one person. Yeah, but then he's got his forearm braced against a 14 year old in a bedroom. And you're like, maybe this guy's kind of a psycho. That's the thing. They needed like two more murders with him. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:40:46 Like he needed to also kill the prostitute. Yeah. You know, we needed to ramp it up. And the motel manager. The motel manager should have died. The head. The wedding. The moment Bouchemmy shows up, this movie takes off.
Starting point is 00:40:59 So good. I'm giving him the Todd Parker Award for Best Character Entrance. Oh. Another hysterical Vaughn moment where he's like, thanks for dressing up. That felt so improv too. And Chivalta is like, Chivalta, who's both the dumbest guy in the world, but is also like incredibly astute, like immediately sniffs out,
Starting point is 00:41:18 Like, huh, this guy, what's going on here? Goes to talk to him. I could have spent more time at the wedding. Honestly, I would have loved to have seen the best man speech. Who is the best man? That's another missed opportunity. He should ask Danny to be the best man. And Danny could have given like a super awkward best man speech.
Starting point is 00:41:35 Like, I just, this stuff isn't hard. Scott Rosenberg, what are you doing on set? Getting in bar fights. That's true. Apparently. He was traumatized. The baseball catch scene. Did Vince win the Mitch Kramer Award for,
Starting point is 00:41:48 worse to athletic? He does. Boy, that's disappointing. That's really disappointing. Why is he throwing it like this? Because he's not bad in wedding crashers playing football. No, he's pretty good.
Starting point is 00:41:57 Yeah. I mean, he's a big guy. He looks like an athlete. I think maybe he played Jamie O'Haron and Rudy. He was taken like a bunch of miles per hour off because he didn't want to hurt the kid. The release point is real weird. I wonder out wide.
Starting point is 00:42:08 It's really odd. I don't know. A six foot five guy having catch with a 12 year old, you have to like adjust your throat. Wow, look at you. You got his back. You got Westman tooth's back. No, there's two options.
Starting point is 00:42:20 Rick Parnell is a saint. Jack Parnell. Is it Jack Barnell? Rick Barnes. Rick Barnes. Do you think they were just like, I love UT? Rick Barnes. He doesn't get far in the tournament, but man, he always qualifies.
Starting point is 00:42:38 Well, there's two choices here, because I find it hard to believe Vince Vaughn can't throw a baseball. One is that he threw his arm out in the baseball catch scene and, like, had a sore arm. then you have a sore arm, you've got to start throwing sideways. Okay. The other is bar fight. Maybe it had a fucked up shoulder for a bar fight. Maybe. Could be.
Starting point is 00:42:55 I'd love to ask him. It would be the first question if Vince Vaughn ever came on the pot, it'd be like, hey, thanks for good about Vince. The best of disturbance, what happened with the throwing? Something's up because he definitely has a better throwing motion than that. It's when they start doing the side, that either means they have a torn rotator cuff or they don't know how to throw baseball. I'll tell you what, though, his performance in the scene is riveting.
Starting point is 00:43:15 It's like the best scene in the movie. I could have watched five more, minutes of it. And then Danny just whips the ball through the window. It's like, is Danny a psycho? What's that? No, I mean, Vince Von was just basically like clean this shit up. I'm not playing it. I like he throws his glove
Starting point is 00:43:29 at him. Yeah. Both gloves, by the way. This movie's awesome. How do you guys I love this movie? This scene is great. Both gloves look like they were purchased that day. There is just nowhere on either of those myths. Oh yeah? The gloves not broken in yet. Dad's such good athlete. Why didn't teach you how to throw a ball Danny? Who's your dad?
Starting point is 00:43:47 Jill O'Neill. I'm going over here. I'm going over there. It's because he's just doing Vince Vaugh. It's the only time in the movie where he's really cooking like that. I wish he had done five more scenes like that. They're making him dinner. He's like, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:44:02 I thought a cheeseburger was supposed to be red. Maybe I'm wrong. Chibolta runs into Bouchemey at the coffee shop. Unbelievable. Into Vaughn. Going to see Bouchemmy. and I forget who he says this too, but I wrote it down when Bouchemu says,
Starting point is 00:44:24 you know what I'm noticing? Haven't seen any dope bookstores around here. He says it to Tramolta. What is that? He's basically doing his Fargo character. No kidding. I kid you not. I kid you not.
Starting point is 00:44:37 He definitely probably got overpaid to be in this movie. Sure. He's still hot off Fargo. I think he fucking paid for it, though. I mean, I'm sure he would have given this one back. But he honestly brings the absolute best to Bouchemmy. Well, that leads into my next favorite scene, which is Ray watching hoops with a hooker.
Starting point is 00:44:54 And he's just like, when he finds out he's going to get paid, he just slaps her ass. And then he fucking turns on the DePaul game, and he's like, what did I miss? Which, like, it was off. How would she know? What are he expecting her to catch him up on what happened in the game? She's like, Stephen Hunter just added three.
Starting point is 00:45:15 It was great. Oh, man. This section of the movie It's a lead. Awesome. Danny sneaks into the car. Bushemi gets stabbed. Is it a screwdriver?
Starting point is 00:45:29 Ice pick. Yeah. Wow. The rare non-blood stabbing. Yeah. The leather jacket must have absorbed a lot of the blood. And then all of a sudden we have an incinerator because the Southport Brick Works
Starting point is 00:45:41 has just an awesome incinerator that's going at all times. It's huge. Just going. The death is staged. well where Bishemi sees the kid and gets stabbed and the way it's shot, it's not bad. I agree. There are moments in the movie where you can feel like a lot of real crafts people, very similar to the conversation about The Good Sun where you're like a lot of overqualified, like,
Starting point is 00:45:59 55-year-old Yoman Hollywood people making this movie. But the editing is where you can feel like getting diced up. But that sequence is cool. Basically, the movie is kind of working, I would say, all the way up to the murder. Yeah. And then as soon as the investigation starts, you start to be like, what the fuck? Yeah, that's where you really really. It's when the cops come in, basically.
Starting point is 00:46:19 You're just like, oh, this is stupid now. So there's a DVD with deleted scenes. And I didn't realize that until yesterday. I was going to, like, speed order it. And we got there until Wednesday. So then my wife was at the Grove yesterday. I'm like, true story. I was like, hey, can you go to the Barnes & Noble
Starting point is 00:46:35 and go to the DVD section and get me domestic disturbance? So I was like, it's domestic disturbance, 2001 with John Travolta. And she texted me, and she said, they don't have it. Well, I'm happy to share with you after the fact that I own it on Blu-ray. Did you watch any deleted scenes? I watched the commentary with Harold Becker. Oh, which was apparently terrible. Is a disaster.
Starting point is 00:47:00 He's frequently like, wait, did you do this? Did you watch the NICS? Then Domestic Disturbance? No, no. I watched Disturbance first. Excuse me, I watched Domestic Disturbance in the afternoon, watched the NICs game, then went downstairs, put on the domestic disturbance commentary and started doing notes for the pod.
Starting point is 00:47:15 and I'm like listening to it while I'm taking notes. And this is Harold Becker's performance. He's like, oh, yeah, here we see these beautiful boats down in Wilmington. I'm really proud of this. I really like these credits that we made for this film. You know, great credit maker. His name's Michael Hogarth. He's a wonderful guy.
Starting point is 00:47:38 And oh, yeah, here we see John Travolta. Really interesting scene here. Like what? Like just completely has no idea that his movie is a fiat. Has no idea that there's been like a bar fight. Like there's no acknowledgement of any of that stuff. It's one of those commentaries too where like long stretches of the commentary are just scenes from the movie with no one talking over it. So it's like he recorded like 48 minutes of content on a 79 minute movie.
Starting point is 00:48:01 Very bad. I went and found the DVD where they have those like big reviews where they even review like the dueted scenes and stuff. Because I really wanted to find out what was in the dueted scenes. Like this was an hour and a half of my day yesterday. It's like, I got to find out what they cut out. I couldn't find it out. But somebody reviewed this and they said the same thing about Becker. It was like, the commentary is bad.
Starting point is 00:48:23 There's long stretches where Harold doesn't say anything. Yes. And then the deleted scenes, I guess, were probably deleted for a reason for the most part. It's weird, too. We'll just never know. I mean, like you listed his movies, like, he's made some really good movies. His movies, you know, Onion Field is a legitimately great movie. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:48:40 I really like the Black Marble, one of his first movies. He's made some really cool stuff over the years. Vision Quest. Vision Quest. One of the Top 12 sports movies in a lot time. Taps is like,
Starting point is 00:48:50 Taps is great. Were you producing when we did Vision Quest? Of course. The movie is fantastic. Yeah, the lap pull-down scene. One of the Gull for solo performances. Yeah, yeah, it was great on that one.
Starting point is 00:49:00 So yeah, it's kind of disappointing. He's like losing the fastball in real time. Too bad. Well, evil events going into Danny's room. The old locked one door didn't lock the other door check. I'm going to lock one of them. my two bedroom doors? What a moron this kid was? It is the first from hell
Starting point is 00:49:18 scene though. Yeah. In the movie where you're like, oh, it's not just that he had to murder his co-conspirator in a racketeering scam. He's actually now menacing this young boy. One of my favorite scenes of the movie and also probably the funniest scene in the movie, Frank punches a guy outside of the school. It's just the best. Gets it
Starting point is 00:49:34 in the car. That guy has not been in the film before. He's no longer. And the way that he knocks him down, he fucking square punches him in the face outside of his school. And the way the scene ends is Terry Paula going, sorry, Mike. No. Then it goes to him in the car and they're driving away.
Starting point is 00:49:51 And the sun goes, Dad, that was cool. And Travolta goes, Danny, don't you realize what I've just done? It's called kidnapping. And it's like, how did they, how did this stay in the movie? And this the cops care about. They're like, oh, we got a punch thrown outside of the school. Yeah. Shut down the roads.
Starting point is 00:50:08 You know what I've just done. It's called kidnapping. What an amazing movie this is. The Boathouse Fire. the mom realizing Rick is a bad guy. And then... I like the wallet scene. When Rick realizes that Danny took his wallet
Starting point is 00:50:23 and he's just like, you're a little fucking liar, aren't you, Danny? Well, we skipped over Danny's betrayal of his father on the witness stand. Oh, yeah. That's right. One of the most nightmare sequences in movie history.
Starting point is 00:50:35 How fucking dare he? Yeah, I don't know. If Ben did that, I don't know if I'm bouncing back. But, like, Dad, can I have $20? He can't. He can't. Dad was like, I'm going to kill your dad. He just saw murder.
Starting point is 00:50:47 He just saw murder. He's like, I'm going to kill your dad next. I don't know, man. Couldn't be me. Yeah, I would never turn to my dad. Eber wrote about the final confrontation. The speech that Vince does, this speech provides additional information that is desperately unwanted
Starting point is 00:51:05 in a way that inspires only bad laughs from the audience. Just when you want to end the movie without any more stumbles. It's really, that it's all confined in a garage for some reason. Yeah. Where does it... I mean, it feels like an 80s canon movie where it's just so awful.
Starting point is 00:51:22 The action staging. Well, there's actually... It's kind of funny because there's no storytelling that suggests there would be a better ending. Like, we don't know anything about this guy, so it's not like, oh, and of course he died doing this. Which was always his fatal flaw. It's like, oh, he hit a fucking electrical box with a... What is? A wrench?
Starting point is 00:51:41 Crowbar. Yeah. Yeah, would you even die from that? I don't even know. Let's find out. I mean, the crowbar is literally resting on top of the fuse box. It's not even though it is like pierced into the wiring or anything. This is one of the many reasons I love this movie, though.
Starting point is 00:51:54 They spend $75 million on it. And the last 20 minutes just becomes a lifetime TV movie being filmed in Winnipeg. Yeah. We're just like, we figured it out. We can film every scene in one day. Get everybody out of here. But this movie, it does have the Netflix, like, modern true crime thing that you love though
Starting point is 00:52:14 where it's like my stepfather is beloved by the Chamber of Commerce but not by me coming up next what do you have for most rewatchable? Catch. Playing catch. Catch is pretty is probably my pick. I do like the kill scene like Craig's saying. I like the kill scene's really good.
Starting point is 00:52:29 I like the incinerator. I like Danny trying to figure out how to get out of the car somehow the car light not going on in the car when you open the door. First car in the last 30 years that usually the car light goes on. most 2001 thing about this movie I had either MSN news searches or just easily being able to change your identity
Starting point is 00:52:50 with no repercussions I don't think you can do that now. Slow loading websites on probably dial-up internet or hardwired internet and also just like casual Shaquille O'Neal references. Oh, good one. Yeah, who would that be? Who am I, Victor Moon-Midama?
Starting point is 00:53:05 That's what he'd say that. Too soon, Bill. Oh, sorry, Sean. I also had just Steve Bouchemmy as a dirtbag criminal stealing the movie That's just in that zone That was what he did Probably not even in his top 10 of dirtbag criminals stealing a movie Floyd Gondaleigh butter on my ass
Starting point is 00:53:21 Lollapops of My Mouth Award for something I just enjoy I have a good one for this I just have Vince Vaughn bullying children But I also agree with Sean That Steve Bouchemey playing a dirtbag is just I'll watch Always works I love when John Travolta tries to get mean in movies Yeah
Starting point is 00:53:37 You know, where he's like, if you touch a hair on my son's head. You know, he's trying to do like Mel Gibson and Ransom, but he just does not have that gear at all. No. I have, this is really special to me, when a hooker complains to our hero that the bad guy liked watching TV more than you like getting laid. It's like about the,
Starting point is 00:54:01 it's character development crossed with some sort of weird complaint that this guy is such a psycho. It's kind of like the reverse of in Bull Durham when Duke is like, we didn't fuck, man. we should just read poetry all night. But it feels like a direct sequel to the scene in Fargo when they take the two prostitutes back to the motel room
Starting point is 00:54:18 and then they have that cut to them watching Jay Leno or whatever later that night. 48 hours says that with Gans. Yeah. The lady says that. You like shooting cops a whole lot more than he likes getting laid. Here's my defense of these guys in these movies.
Starting point is 00:54:33 I would argue they do like getting laid because they're paying for a prostitute. And it's the girlfriend. The girlfriend experience is take part in my rituals, you know, like share my passions, my hobbies. I love hoops. Tell us what you do. Like, sorry, prostitutes.
Starting point is 00:54:47 These guys have simple, they're simple dudes. He likes college basketball, getting laid, and racketeering. Those are his three things. Can we talk about Ray's plan, though? Yeah, what was Ray's plans? To get paid off to go away. So Ray's like, here's what I'm going to do. I'm going to show up in town and I'm going to get a motel room and I'm going to wait around
Starting point is 00:55:04 as long as possible and make him uncomfortable without actually doing anything. But I've been told by Rick Jack that I am not allowed to go out in public in the town and get some eggs. Like that is forbidden. You know, we got Frank snooping around. So he's like, you cannot be in town. People are going to start asking questions
Starting point is 00:55:25 and you're too candid. You know, like you're too unrefined for this place. But Ray actually thinks that he's just going to get paid off by Rick Jack and it's just going to work. He spent a lot of time inside, you know? Maybe he doesn't, his reflexes are dulled. Do you have a Floyd Gondali from this movie or no? Oh, um, Gondoli?
Starting point is 00:55:47 It's probably just, Gondali? It's probably Dirtbag Bishemi. I did feel like I got a little sequel to Fargo for 10 minutes. It was really enjoyable. It's nice. Needed Stormar. Stormair. Peter Stormer.
Starting point is 00:55:59 What's age the best? The comedy of Sinister Vince Vaughn, Travolta, And then just what an absolute shitty son, Danny is. Danny sucks. Terrible. I mean, admittedly bad age for little boys, 12, 13. Good actor, though. Good actor.
Starting point is 00:56:17 Matt O'Leary, really good. But it just kind of sucks and turns on his dad at one point. And I don't know, I felt like he could have defended his mom better at the end. It seemed like a pretty good sailor. Yeah, solid sailor. Like, just dumped his basketball team at the start of the movie. Oh, yeah? It's like, where's Danny?
Starting point is 00:56:35 I don't know. he was doing a weird, his stowaway fetish again. Huge sports movie. He likes climbing in the cars. Incredible sports movie. Yeah. Travolta punching a meddling pair at his age the best. The baseball catch.
Starting point is 00:56:48 I wrote down last stand for hairlines for Travolta and Vince. Sure. Travolta's got, it's all the way back in the sides. It's the remnants of the... Up front with a little bit mullet in the back. It's the remnants of the Vince and Vega, right? Yeah. He's about to go into Tupé land.
Starting point is 00:57:05 And then Vince... it's really gone back, but Vince has a full head of hair. Do you think they should have made more of Travolta and Bouchemy in a diner as an echo of Pulp Fiction when Bouchemey's Travolta's waiter? No question. I would have just told them to add the Harold Becker was... Like, ask for a vanilla coat or whatever.
Starting point is 00:57:23 What did you have for what's age the best, anything? This ending Vince Vaughn's his career is a dramatic star. You think that's age the best? Yeah, I think that's a good answer. Yeah. Because it kicks off a great run. Right. Anything?
Starting point is 00:57:36 I had Vishemi playing Needled Dick low-level hood who likes prostitutes and a pretty straightforward old-school, likable Travolta performance, which you don't get a lot after this.
Starting point is 00:57:48 I had a scumbag characters named Ray. Yeah, it's great. Great name for a skimbag. Is Ray the best scumbag name? Is there a better one? I mean, Ray definitely his nickname is slick.
Starting point is 00:57:59 You know? Like, it is like... There's no hero of a movie name Ray that I can think of. It's usually like, Oh, like, what was that show we liked with Kyle Chandler? Bloodline.
Starting point is 00:58:11 Uh-huh. Was that what it's called? No, bloodlines. Bloodlines. Yeah. Was the scumbag brother, was his name Ray? I think so. Could have been.
Starting point is 00:58:18 Yes. Yeah. Anytime it's like my brother Ray's back in town, it's like, oh boy, buckle up. The two good rays, Ray Charles. Ray Allen. And Ray from Field of Dreams. Ray Kinsella. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:58:30 Ray Romano. But I mean, like, a character name. He's Ray Barone. That's Raymond. That's in that show. Oh, right. He goes by Ray. He does.
Starting point is 00:58:38 I thought everybody loved Raymond. Funny people. Underrated dirtbag name in movies is Dennis. There's always like a Dennis. Kind of a wild. Dennis pack. Yeah. You don't come across a lot of Dennises these days.
Starting point is 00:58:53 No. What are the other dirtbag names? I think Ray, I know right away. Frank could go either way, though. Like Frank's the good guy in this movie. Yeah, but barely. Ray, I'm pretty sure you're a fuck up. Well, there's always, like, the last name versions of it, too, like, Hutch or Slater,
Starting point is 00:59:10 where you're like, oh, this guy. He's on the wrong side of the law. Great Shot Gordor Award. It's got to be Bishemi getting stabbed, right? I had Rich Shadow emerging on Danny's Wall after he closes the door. Oh. But this is not exactly north by northwest. I had kind of an inverted Great Shot Gordo because it's the worst shot in the movie,
Starting point is 00:59:26 but it's like there's a hold on the crowbar resting on top of the fuse box. And Vince Wall's like fake electrocuting himself. That's, he's fucking no cell of that electrocution. He's just like, No. At that point, he just wants to get out of North Carolina before the natives come after him again. Let me get out of here.
Starting point is 00:59:46 Chess Rockwell, Brockley, Anders, where best character name, Rick Barnes? Absolutely. Has to be, right? Yeah. I think he's probably coaching Providence around that. I don't know if he's at Texas yet. Oh, 5? Or no, 1?
Starting point is 00:59:57 01. He's in Texas. Is he at Texas? He's in the 90s. Yeah. Is he? He goes Texas, UT, and now he's at Tennessee now. He's Providence initially.
Starting point is 01:00:09 Rick Barnes was at Providence? Yeah, wasn't he? Was he Dodge-Am Gods Coach? That was his first... I thought Petino was at Providence. See, now we're going to have to look this up. Texas, 98 to 2015, and then Tennessee since. And he was at Providence 88 to 94.
Starting point is 01:00:22 Yeah. There you go. Okay. When was Petino in Providence earlier? Okay. A category we brought back that I don't know why I'd ever went away, but could this movie have had a better title? Domestic disturbance
Starting point is 01:00:38 is an awful title. There's not a domestic disturbance in this movie. Very bad. Really awful? Not my father? Well, the stepfather's taken. Step murderer? That's funny.
Starting point is 01:00:52 What about Southport? So I wrote the Southport lie. Yeah. Southport lie? Yeah, I love when you put the town in the title and then you're like, but whose lie is it? Was it Danny's lie? Was it Rick Jack's Southport lie. What about the boatyard?
Starting point is 01:01:06 That's good, too. I like that. What about for Netflix, it would be, this is my family. Colin the Rick Jack story. Vince Vaughn with like a scary look at his face. I just wrote The Boy Who cried wolf. I feel like that would have worked.
Starting point is 01:01:21 Oh. Which one do you like out of those? What about joint custody? Oh, that's great. That's great. Craig. I love that. But that immediately calls to mind
Starting point is 01:01:30 like divorced parents who still share custody. of a marijuana farm. Oh, sure. You know? Yeah. And it's like... That's like a pineapple express.
Starting point is 01:01:40 Joint custody is great. Yeah. That's very good. Did you see Charvote and Vaughan in joint custody yet? Uh, Sierra Eva Flex. I feel bad because this is so easy, but the Sarah Connor Award for Wood Modern Technology Ruin this movie. And you were asking why from hell goes away.
Starting point is 01:01:54 And I do think it's because of surveillance technology and smartphones and high speed internet and search engines. Yeah, there's cameras at the Southport Brickyard. Yeah. Yeah. And also just like, they would look up Rick, Rick Frank, what's his name? Rick Jack. Rick Jack's, they would be like,
Starting point is 01:02:11 does he have any social media? And it would have started three months ago. Yeah. Yeah. I'm finding him on Blue Sky. Yeah. This guy was really fired up for a Dukakis. He really likes Mare Z.
Starting point is 01:02:24 Butch's Girlfriend Award, Week Link of the film. It's really the last 15 minutes, but especially the garage fight ending. I just such a strange choice. Do you have outdoors You've all these things you could have done Gone downtown I don't know why you want to be confined to a weird garage Well they blow the load with a
Starting point is 01:02:43 Boatyard fire Yeah right Boat fire earlier and then they're stuck doing this very small set piece at the end And then the electrocution is just really Singerly terrible It's bad No disrespect I had Frank's new girlfriend Yeah
Starting point is 01:02:58 Diane Yeah I just think that that could have been like 3% more interesting and it would have helped the movie. Michelle Pfeiffer, who do you think? Emily Watson. Young Kate Winslet. Tiffany Amber Theson. Yeah. Either one.
Starting point is 01:03:14 And now a little worse. It reflects relationship. What's age the worst? I got to say this off top. Susan's miscarriage and the way it's treated where they're like, hey, sorry you miscarried. And then the movie ends.
Starting point is 01:03:31 I guess it eliminates a very complicated. Oh, yeah. Like, after effect of, like, the father of this baby is dead. But it is just like, hey, sorry about that. Once you head over to the hospital, get that checked out. That could have been a way to do the sequel. It's like make it a Damien Omen. Go to the hospital.
Starting point is 01:03:50 They got to clean that up. Step murderer, two, son of Rick Jack. I had that. Step murderer. I had that multiple nitpicks about that, including how would they know she lost the baby, within two minutes of the garage fight. Like, pretty sure they have to run tests on that.
Starting point is 01:04:10 Everything about the last five minutes is... When the fucking detective comes up to apologize to Frank, he's like, hey, say it to my son. I'm sorry. How about I fucking say it to you, huh? Detective's like, I'm sorry. Frank doesn't go. I've lost my entire business. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:04:29 My wife's husband's dead and everything's burned down. I had this desperately name. needed to be a rated R movie. I needed more F-bombs. Yeah. Yeah. I needed two sex scenes. I think you have to have the Vaughn Terry Polo.
Starting point is 01:04:44 Yes. Hearing her, like, groaning and Danny being, like, really disturbed by hearing his mom, you know, in five rooms over. Yes. And then Vince coming out being like, hey, Danny, just getting some lemonade and just, like, having that. And then you have to say, Bershemi with the hooker. You just have to. Do we just go back to lemonade for a second? Is that, like, your preference?
Starting point is 01:05:05 Orange juice. I don't know. The butt sugar going again. Oh, God. And the Bushemi murder could have been way better. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:05:13 Yeah. I feel like also for it's age where just him getting stabbed in general on the set is like that sucks. That's horrible. Yeah,
Starting point is 01:05:19 because it's funny. It's like he does, it's not funny, but he does like three or four movies a year all the way around this movie and in 04, he just does one,
Starting point is 01:05:27 which kind of means he had shot like what he shot and then it all came out, but like he had basically taken a couple years off. Well, he goes on to the Sopranos. Oh, that's right. He goes on the Sopranos.
Starting point is 01:05:36 So he spends a lot of time doing that. Season 5 Sopranos, the best, my favorite soprano season. It's amazing season, Tony Blondetto. I have for what stage is the worst, the police sergeant as well, who also gets the Vincent Chase Award for, I was sure this character was good at his job. I also had him for overacting. This is Ruben Santiago Hudson, who just got nominated for a Tony, so he's, like, a very accomplished actor.
Starting point is 01:05:56 He's done a lot of work. But when he's like... He's terrible in this movie. What does he say? He was like, I'm not wasted any more time or money on this sick kid's bullshit story. that is like nobody understands why he's so mad at day yeah for age the worst also
Starting point is 01:06:14 just any Jonathan D. Crane's a producer of this movie he was Travolta's manager from 78 or from maybe 1988 through 2004 any movie that he's listed as a producer is a not good is he kind of like a Spengali type
Starting point is 01:06:28 yeah yeah the mom stuff she's just such a stupid character I can't believe they didn't fix any of it. She's one of the dumbest characters in the From Hell movies. This movie claims it's in Maryland, but it's entirely shot in North Carolina. And I don't know why they didn't just say it was in North Carolina.
Starting point is 01:06:49 What was the point of being like, oh, the Maryland coast is something like, why? The only sort of sign of it is when he gives him a Cal Ripkin glove, but otherwise it doesn't feel like the chess feet of all. This is my favorite, though. There's a GQ interview with Chavolta, and he said he had an idea for an extra step, in the end where after Vince Vaughn was electrocuted,
Starting point is 01:07:07 he played dead for a few seconds, then bolted up, now much stronger from the electricity, and they had a second fight. But then he said that idea was scrapped. That's too bad. It would have been better in the, like, ridiculous horror movie trope way than what we get.
Starting point is 01:07:24 Yeah, yeah, you know, like Michael Myers or something. Vince Vaughn's like... Hans Gruber, yeah, Vince is like, I'm out. My plane's out here tomorrow. Hans Gruber scale villain ranking. Vince is like a 3.5? I'm barely, I'm kind of rooting for him, honestly.
Starting point is 01:07:38 Yeah. Roughly and a Rubiduk Partridge overacting, we're giving it to the sergeant. And then, Sean, you have a flex. I mean, it's the same as what we're saying before the Saracana Award for when modern technology ruined this movie.
Starting point is 01:07:50 I just feel like reverse image search alone. Yeah. On a photo of Rick just ends this whole thing. We have to... Or just like one piece of police work. Yeah. You know? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:08:00 Who was Ray? Like, this guy's having eggs in town. He's clearly a person who's spending time there. And then he just disappears. They're not looking into this. That's another scene that's missing where after the sergeant shoe-shoes everyone away and it's like this kid, why does he keep making? I'm tired of waste the money for him.
Starting point is 01:08:15 Not having like the young female cop or somebody would be like, Sarge, I got to ask, like, why would that kid make up a story that elaborate? Like, it doesn't make you think. There's also like... Isn't there something about this Rick Barnes? Troultta would have been like... It seems like Danny probably would have seen Ray at the wedding as well. Susan would have seen Ray when he's introduced to her.
Starting point is 01:08:38 Then Travolta sees Ray a couple days after the wedding, and he's like, I'm thinking about buying real estate here. So it's not like everybody's like, who's Ray? This is a ghost. The kid made him up. It's really strange. I watched my daughter. I watched this movie twice in the last month,
Starting point is 01:08:52 including the first time with my daughter when she was home in the month of May. And she loved this movie because she loves All From Hell movies, and she loves Turn Your Brain Off movies. And this is a good turn your brain off movie. but that's like a classic Turn Your Brain Off section where it's like Wait, what?
Starting point is 01:09:09 But you just like Just don't even think about it. This is the entirety of Apple's Cape Fear right now. One more break And then we got Hotest Take The CR thinks Luke Wilson Could have been Harrison Ford
Starting point is 01:09:23 Hotest Take Award. What do you got CR? If this movie is about Steve Bouchemi's character Hunting Down Vinces and that the tension is that Vince is trying to start a new life and Ray is getting in the way of that
Starting point is 01:09:35 it's like a really, really cool aughts crime movie and it's like they really had like an original you know criminal trying to turn a new leaf getting hunted down by his past would have been awesome imagine five more Bouchemian vons scenes but instead we got Danny in the boat
Starting point is 01:09:54 this is sort of related to that in terms of how they misframed the movie but Danny is the villain of the movie and he should be in prison for betraying his father publicly And was kind of a deranged kid. That's some problems. Yeah. Well, divorce, you know.
Starting point is 01:10:08 Well, he really, like, he's climbing into cars. Like, there's some stowaway thing they mentioned in the beginning. And they were like, yeah, he did that stoway thing again. It's like, so he's just climbing into the back seats of cars and he's driven around? Because his parents got divorced, right? Yeah. Like, these are, like, weird runway things? Yeah, I think that Danny's probably, yeah.
Starting point is 01:10:31 I had Trevolta and Vaughan switch parts better movie That's my casting what if It's the only thing I had Oh interesting I think you're right I just think it's better Oh I think it's funnier because this movie was always meant to be an unintentional comedy classic anyway
Starting point is 01:10:45 I think Travolta trying to be the bad Big Swing and Dick bad guy And Vaughn being like the younger guy He's got some Chicago mob ties Yeah Vaughn and Terry Polo got married when they were like 19 It didn't work out Yeah
Starting point is 01:10:58 Yeah Vaugh was older rich guy He just wants to work on folks, but is a nice guy. They're like a little too far apart in age. They're almost 20 years apart, Vaughn and Travolta, it feels a little weird. Yeah. Well, it's also like, why were Travolta and Polo married?
Starting point is 01:11:10 It doesn't really. They're at least 15 years. And how old is she's supposed to really, like this kid's 12? She's probably, like, she's in her mid-30s? But meet the parents, she's in mid-20s, and that comes out a year earlier? Yeah. Yeah, it's weird.
Starting point is 01:11:24 It's off. Casting when ifs couldn't find any. Best that guy wore two really good ones. Chris Ellis and Ruben Santiago Hudson, right? Who's Chris Ellis? He's the other cop. He's like always in NASA's control center. He's great.
Starting point is 01:11:39 I went deep diver. Oh, okay. Travolta's girlfriend played Beecher's girlfriend on Oz. She sure did. That's right. We saw her. She sure did. The judge in the custody trial hearing.
Starting point is 01:11:51 The evil jury foreman from a time to kill. Oh. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, that guy. Yeah. Yeah, he's a good that guy.
Starting point is 01:11:59 Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. You see his face and you just think about the KKK and bad trials in the South. This movie has a similar energy as a time to kill where you're just like, what? They're going for the KKK? You know, like, you're in an hour into the movie. You're like, they're going to lose?
Starting point is 01:12:16 Deanne Waiter's the Word. It's Bishemi, right? Absolutely. Can it make a case for the hooker? No. Patty? Yeah, Patty. We're just passing time.
Starting point is 01:12:25 Yeah. It's watching some DePaul. That whole thing with the lighter. where it's like 20, 25 bucks. Recasting Couch Director or City. I'm going to give you three choices as the sergeant. Okay. The cultural fun one, 50 cent.
Starting point is 01:12:44 Like just trying to be in a movie. Coming off of Get Rich or Die trying. Yeah, yeah. It's just like, I'm trying to do movies now. I'm the sergeant and domestic disturbance. I'm not sure he screams Maryland police lieutenant. Is Get Rich O'1? When does it come out? I think it is.
Starting point is 01:12:55 Yeah. Philip Michael Thomas? Sure, man. Yeah. Okay. A little comeback for him. Older, he's been around, doing little Rico tubs.
Starting point is 01:13:04 I was thinking Ernie Hudson. Ernie Hudson? Yeah. Lawrence Fishburn? We've already spent $75 million. Let's go 80. A little overqualified. Let's go 80.
Starting point is 01:13:15 We already spent 75. Yeah, sure. What's he doing in 2001? Is that deep cover? When's deep cover? Post matrix. No, it's post matrix. Post matrix.
Starting point is 01:13:23 That's right. Yeah. And starring... Give him a couple extra scenes. Lawrence, how are you going to follow up the Matrix? Well, I'll blame the age. lead in domestic disturbance. Terrence Howard?
Starting point is 01:13:32 They're going to yell at a Terrence Howard. That could work. I think I like Philip Michael Thomas the most. Craig, you have a flex. Dorfler's Door Ward. How much did that hurt? People take some shots to the head
Starting point is 01:13:43 in this movie. Travolta goes through a car door window in the final scene. Does a crowbar to the back of the head in his boat shop. Vince Vaughn takes a baseball bat to the skull and is just up and at him like a minute later. But swung by a 13-year-old.
Starting point is 01:13:58 I mean, still. It's still a metal. That's bad, it wasn't, man. Terry Polo, headfirst into a cabinet. That's right. I mean, there's a brutal stretch of 15 minutes of head trauma. Violent film. C.T.
Starting point is 01:14:10 Everyone has CT at the end. Fortunately, Vince Von was killed, so we don't have to worry about the after effects of that baseball bat wound. Also, as somebody who's been electrocuted, he wouldn't have died that quickly. You've been electrocuted? You've been electrocuted? Yes. How? One of my last two weeks of college, I worked at the film house, like the rental house.
Starting point is 01:14:26 We'd rent out equipment to film students. And they brought back one of the, the big stage lights and there was clearly some faulty wire that happened while they were filming. We had to check all of them before they came back to make sure they were okay before we put them away and like log them and something was wrong. I plugged it in, turned on the light, was holding it. It's a metal light. Got electrocuted for like from what I was told 10 to 15 seconds. Wow. Did you pass out? No. Somebody saw what was going on and unplug the light, but it was like sparking. I don't really have a strong memory of it. I don't know how long it lasted, but I was like apparently
Starting point is 01:14:57 like flexing all my muscles for like 10, 15 seconds, like trying to make a sound but you can't because you're so constrained. Do you think that that is your superhero origin story? That that made you like a gifted taste. That's how he was able to read the futures of tight ends for football seasons.
Starting point is 01:15:14 That's right. Stay away from Kyle Pitts. I was like, if I die, somebody should eat me. And that's how I came up with the cannibalism. Use my skin and muscles for food. But he would have held on away long. It was like five seconds. He's not going to die.
Starting point is 01:15:27 that quick. Like that. I didn't realize Craig was a piece of Craig Moore. Let's go to our electrocution expert. Craig Holbeck. Were you actually like 5-7, 110 pounds until that happened? It was like HGH. Yeah, it was weirdly fine.
Starting point is 01:15:43 He's like walking in the trivial psychic. Yeah, yeah. You're going to have a cup of coffee. That's your dead zone moment. Half-ass internet research. The only one I could find that was interesting was Travolta flew himself in and out of Wilmington during the shoots. Can I ask, what do you guys think Travolta's relationship to the bar fight story is?
Starting point is 01:16:03 Like, do you think they asked him to go out with them? And he was like, no, no, guys, that's okay. There's no way he was going out with those guys. Do you think it then became like a you don't know what we've been through, kind of divisive thing on set? Yeah, like the nom of domestic students. I don't think I haven't been through it. Is there any way you can find out?
Starting point is 01:16:23 Yeah, maybe I could. Apex Mountain. Travolta, no. Von, no. Bushemi no. Terry Polo, no. Divorce movies, no. Evil Step Dad movies, no.
Starting point is 01:16:37 Wooden Boat Company movies? Sure. How many wooden boat plots have we had? Well, I mean, there are a lot of movies about yachting that are better than this, and those are all wooden boats, aren't they? Did this make you want to get a wooden boat someday, CR? Nah. No?
Starting point is 01:16:52 No. I got to look this up. What? Just movies about boatmakers, you know? Just like there's small. There's probably a better. There's probably like a Robert Brissone movie called The Boat Maker. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:17:03 Maryland Coast, definitely not since it was filmed in North Carolina. Is this Apex Mountain for the cinematic depiction of the DePaul men's college basketball program? This is, if he's watching the 2000-2001 team, it's Bobby Simmons and Stephen Hunter. Oh. They weren't bad. Yeah. But, you know, they had three pros on that team. You use Apex Mountain for that being depicted?
Starting point is 01:17:24 Yeah. I mean, DePaul is definitely the 80s. The Mark Aguire, Ray Meyer. But I'm just saying, like, being depicted on... It's just a weird bit that he's like, I'm really into Chicago. But they have to bang home that he's from Chicago, so you have to do Paul because you have no other Chicago. Were they playing Maryland?
Starting point is 01:17:41 Why would that game be on in Maryland? That's a good question. There's some speculation about why is it on at all because it's the middle of the fall. Oh, yeah. Yeah, I had that basketball on. It's October 18th, he dies. There's no college basketball yet.
Starting point is 01:17:54 It's tough one. A little sketchy. Hell of Becker's like, yeah, whatever. Nobody don't notice this. It's something like podcasts are. are coming. Maybe the sports are. Huge embarrassing bar fights
Starting point is 01:18:05 during a filming. I think this was Apex Mountain Saturday. Well, there's probably like a ton from the 40s where like John Wayne split a guy's head open. I was going to say, there's got to be some sort of Oliver Reed, Richard Harris story where those guys are, you know. Dean Martin killed a guy. Yeah, Robert Shaw. Those guys are getting into some trouble. It's a fair point. Oliver
Starting point is 01:18:20 Reed or Richard Harris probably had a worse one where they fought 10 guys and then shit on one of them. Peter O'Toole fell on a staircase or something. A bunch of those guys to British guys used to drink in my grandfather's pubs back in England. You would have, like, he had one in Camden. He had one in, like, the Knightsbridge area back in, like, the 40s or 50s or whatever.
Starting point is 01:18:40 And they used to get hammered there. That'd be a good movie. He's like, they were, but they were like Olympic, like, blackout drinkers. Right. Yeah. Two bottles of whiskey. Gin.
Starting point is 01:18:47 Yeah. Just straight gin. And there's like a legacy with it, too. Like, when you're a young up and comer, you're like, this is how it's got to go. Yeah. I've got to get blackout drunk. that's part of responsibility.
Starting point is 01:18:59 I think like Sean Penn took that mantle for a while. Yeah. That's the famous Paul Newman thing, right? Drink like a case of beer every day. Best, we had to replace Scorseseer or Spielberg. Oh, because we've had Spilger. We can't do that anymore. Why?
Starting point is 01:19:13 Because we had Spielberg doing Scorseser's best. I have to retire the category. Should we have a different pair of directors every episode or just a steady? Now it's Becker or Hansen. Yeah. I was going to say Becker or Kubrick. I have replaced it for this episode with Becker. name for the movie for a racehorse.
Starting point is 01:19:31 And it's either Southport or Ray Coleman. But I think a horse name Ray Coleman would have been pretty good. I think Rick Jack would have been good. Rick Jack's good. I wrote Danny Lies. Here comes Danny Lies. Cruiser Hanks or Cruz and Hanks. Gotta be.
Starting point is 01:19:48 Is this the first cruise and Hanks that we've had? We've had a couple. This is a legitimately good one. Yes. It's. Hank's is the father. Hux is a stepfather. Cruz is.
Starting point is 01:19:57 Or would you go the other way? Hank's going against type. I would enjoy that. I'd like to see it. It's definitely Cruz. Travolta's playing a cruise part. O-1 is Minority Report for Cruz. What's Hank's doing in O-1?
Starting point is 01:20:13 Castaway is 99. Is that a terminal? Castaway is 2000, and the wheels start to shift for Hank's a little bit. Cruz is still... He's in Vanilla Sky. He's still cranking out of it. You get a baseball scene out of Cruz.
Starting point is 01:20:27 That's true. And Hanks, you know, League of their own. You can do it. That's right. I think... Maybe they can have catch with each other. Crank? It's interesting because neither of them normally play the Vaughn part.
Starting point is 01:20:39 No. If you could only have one, who would you have? I would have Cruz in the Travolta part. I would like to see... I'm Cruz in the Vaughn part is amazing. I can see Cruz saying, like, I'm not trying to be your dad, but I'd like to be your friend. And the baseball soon would be huge. Picky Nits, all the obvious dubs.
Starting point is 01:21:01 Did the fooling versus fuck? Do you think Rick put any effort into a new identity, or did he just buy, like, a new, kind of some new clothes? I think it's, like, it demands an even bigger question. Like, the plan, so he is to pretend to be happy and marry a single mom and do public acts as a citizen in this town. He doesn't think he's pretending to be happy at all. He says to her, you're the best thing that's ever happened to me.
Starting point is 01:21:24 But does he really believe that? Oh, yeah. I think he thinks, like, I'm going to, I've always wanted to get out of the grime and be a big man in society. And what you need is money to do that, and it's all working out. And is he just like Terry Polo is a smoke show, so I'm super stoked? I mean, that's another one that I wanted to ask is like, how fat, like,
Starting point is 01:21:41 so when this movie starts, how long have they been divorced for? A year? Because they make it seem like the divorce just happened. I would say a year. She got pregnant pretty fast. How much time? A little loose in this movie, maybe? How much time goes by during the film?
Starting point is 01:21:57 It's unclear. All of it's unclear. I thought a couple of days, but that would mean she was... It's got to be more than that. But she was probably pregnant at the wedding. They get like a custody trial. It feels like September, October. I don't think that this town has a big docket.
Starting point is 01:22:11 They're probably just like, sure, custody trial. We got nothing going on. Let's do it tomorrow. Rick changes his name and his life, but it's totally cool with having a newspaper wedding announcement with this picture. Oh, yeah. I'm probably vetoing that if I'm, Rick Barnes. Not a good choice. I will say the choice
Starting point is 01:22:29 of picking a name in which there is another prominent person with that name is really smart. Yeah. So you'd recommend that? Yeah, you'd be like, my name is Humphrey Bogart. Do you think they should have had Rick with his old life when they, when the newspaper thing comes up, like had a beard?
Starting point is 01:22:46 Like something about him looked different. It looks exactly the same. It's just like, oh, this is clearly him. The no blood in the car post-stabbing was incredible. Southport Brickworks just having no evidence at anywhere. No fingerprints in the door. Nothing in the incinerator.
Starting point is 01:23:03 It's just all gone. There's not like one idea or anything. If Danny had just said at the trial, like I stand by what I said. And also this man has threatened me since then and said he's going to kill my father if I say what I'm saying on the stand. At the worst, the cops would be like,
Starting point is 01:23:18 we got to get Danny out of that house and we need to put you guys into protective custody. Yeah, we got to at least figure this out for the next two weeks. How does Frank find Betty the Hook? He's at her house all the sudden? No, that's in the motel, isn't it? Was it? It seemed like an apartment.
Starting point is 01:23:35 I mean... I think he goes to her house after going to the motel. Patty the hooker. Is Patty or Betty? It's Patty, and he sees the phone records. Right. He's like, who's this?
Starting point is 01:23:44 And he's like, I love the girls. Love the ladies. This guy's fucking Bernthal and our showdown is Wayne Jenkins. He's fucking tracking people down? He didn't know I was working with Sherlock Coles. He's tracking people down
Starting point is 01:23:59 but can't figure out Rick Barnes isn't Rick Barnes? How would they know immediately that she lost the baby is my favorite nitpick from this? And then, Danny, I'm sorry. Thanks, Sergeant. I'm going to be suing the town now. Thanks for sure. Thanks for the apology that I'll now be talking about in the trial
Starting point is 01:24:19 because my boathouse is gone. That Southport Chamber of Commerce is going down. Yeah, everything. Frank is basically on the town. This brings the town to its needs. Yeah, it's over. Anything else? From picking Netsna.
Starting point is 01:24:31 Sequel, prequel, prestige, TV, all black cast. Wait, one more thing. Yeah. What's going on with the other two convicts? Are they still in prison? Those guys are out, but they weren't looking for Rick, like the way Ray was. I think they were probably like, we can't find them. We're idiots.
Starting point is 01:24:45 That's the sequel. Ray's like I almost gave up, and then you had a fucking wedding announcement. All I knew was you got, you were on the East Coast. That's DD2. DD2. Coming. Yeah, sometimes they come back. Well, they could show up and just be like, look, like, now it's your debt to Frank, you know?
Starting point is 01:25:03 Yeah. And you got to make us boats for, like, getaway boats for bankrupt. Written drug boats? I'm going all black cast for the next category. And they probably already made it. We just didn't know what happened. I would do prequel. I would do the racketeering storyline.
Starting point is 01:25:19 Oh, that was what I did too. I want to see what they did. It's so vague. Chicago? Yeah. Turns out of Chicago. You think we get Ron Dean in there? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:25:28 Let's get to Palma to make it. Andrew Davis, yeah. Is this movie better with Wayne Jenkins, Fergie the Flores, Zainlo, Robert Evans, Dr. Charles Nichols, or someone else? You're a little fucking liar, aren't you, Donnie? You're going to do this for me. I'm going to clip your nuts like I clipped your daddies.
Starting point is 01:25:46 He builds boats for me now. I was watching I'd seen the other day. That's a perfect match. Fucking hell. It's such a good scene. Fergie the Flores now of the South Pout. You think you're the only guy in Charleston with a gun? I wanted Dr. Charles Nichols at the Chamber of Commerce Ceremony
Starting point is 01:26:06 and then having Frank there, you have to excuse my friend Frank. He's very not well. Just one Oscar who gets it. We rarely do this, but this is a full-fledged nobody. No Oscar's saying it out for this one. One of the worst performances for Apex Mountain and just won Oscar in show history. Really, really. You can't make a case.
Starting point is 01:26:28 for anything. Unanswerable questions. Did Travolta, Terry Polo get back together? I don't think so. This was my Zwanayo. Was another way to do a sequel in the movie is... So Danny is traumatized for life by what happens, obviously. But Susan and Travolta get back together.
Starting point is 01:26:48 And then that drives Diane Travolta's girlfriend crazy. And then she goes out and seeks revenge. And the sequel... It's the second... DD2 is Diane's revenge. Yeah. Yeah. That's where you really needed to...
Starting point is 01:26:58 Anthony Emberthies in instead of that actress. And she would have cooked. Yeah. She was bringing some of the Valerie energy. Yeah. Yeah. She's angry now. Terry Polo inherits all of Jack Rick's fortune.
Starting point is 01:27:10 I bet that they hadn't drawn up wills yet. They got married. Do you do that the day of? I mean, like, it's... They're married. She inherits everything. So in a weird way, it all worked out for everybody. They get back together.
Starting point is 01:27:23 Probably the police get involved with what... The money. How that money got. He sues the town. He owns Southport. owns like a big chunk of the city now because they fucked up his boathouse. Huge W for Troulton.
Starting point is 01:27:33 Yeah, I think it's a big one. Except for his son being destroyed forever. Well, that was my other in answer. When does Danny kill his first prostitute? Is it Patty? I think Danny becomes a compulsive liar after this because he's like, it worked. Continues to be a compulsive liar.
Starting point is 01:27:48 Continues to be a compulsive liar. And then Danny should become a detective. And it should drive the sergeant guy crazy who's now the chief of police. He's like, I can't believe. So little fucking liar is my detective. We've really nicely shaped the domestic disturbance cinematic universe. I can't believe they'd make nine of these.
Starting point is 01:28:05 Danny's hosting a fantasy football podcast for The Ringer. Yeah, Danny's like, me and Michael Pennix were hanging out last night. He knows a thing or two about electrocution as well. Those are the qualifications. The memorability you'd most want for this movie, clearly the Rick Barnes Chamber of Commerce Award. That big plaque he got. Or Danny's Cal Ripkin glove. Oh, the glove would be good.
Starting point is 01:28:28 I want one of those boats. The wooden boat. A handmade boat. Pretty flammable. Good point. Fair. Coach Finstock, Mr. Miyagi were a best worst life lesson.
Starting point is 01:28:36 Believe your child? Sure. You don't agree with that. Well, yeah, sure. I think I should. My whole thing is if a story's that elaborate, you have my attention. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:28:46 It's not like I saw, I saw Rick kill a guy. It's like, so we drove in, there's a thing. There was an incinerator. Like, at some point, there's just too much detail. Yeah, just follow a question when he's like on the
Starting point is 01:28:58 stand and he's like, I actually got out in town and I just took off. It's like, well, how do you know about the incinerator then? And how do you know about all the details of this thing? Yeah. Best double feature choice. I have the stepfather. It's a tricky one because it makes them
Starting point is 01:29:14 this movie look worse because the stepfather is better. Stepfather's good. I have to be cool because you need to have a pallet cleanser of Travolta. Oh. You need to have like a... Travolta and Vaughn. They're in it together. Not Battle of the Earth.
Starting point is 01:29:28 No. Who won the movie? I think Vaughn did just because I just like watching Vince Vaughn. He's very entertaining. I really respected how Hardy tried it all throughout. I wrote Matt O'Leary, who's the only actor who's actually giving a good performance.
Starting point is 01:29:42 You know, kid performance is really up and down. The movie kind of hinges on him. He's very good in the movie. It would be kind of amazing if Culkin was doing Good Sun in this movie. Wow. And kind of came face-to-face with another killer. Oh, like two from hell characters meet.
Starting point is 01:29:58 That would be cool. you could start making like from hell crossover movies. Another cinematic universe idea. That sounds great. What'd you think, Craig? It's a great summer selection. I immediately knew I could watch this movie at like noon on a Monday, which was great.
Starting point is 01:30:15 I'm really racking up some classics here from Hell Month that I can talk to absolutely no one like that. Yeah, I honestly, most leisure just kind of fascinated observing John Travoltauolte in this movie, like an extraterrestrial. and I kind of was just obsessed with his entire look in performance and everything about him. What about the circumference of his head?
Starting point is 01:30:35 His head is enormous. Triple Vince Fawn's head. Scientologists don't drink, right? Ooh. Do they? I don't know. I don't believe so. Because his familiarity with the Bud Light can is,
Starting point is 01:30:45 it seems like it's the first time he's hauled one of those. What do they call the Cruz would have that too? It's not Bud Light. Like, what does it say on it? I think it's supposed to be like Keystone or something like that or Natty. Travolta's really all over the place. He can really play up and down to his opponent.
Starting point is 01:30:58 he's like Darnold. That's like, you could win three games in them and he's the worst quarterback in the league. It's a great take. Or he's like, you could win a Super Bowl in the right system. True. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:31:06 It's true. If he's got the right coach. Tribota is Sam Darnold. What are Craig's best takes? Yeah. Yeah. When I was growing up, I loved Get Shorty. I thought Get Shorty was the greatest movie.
Starting point is 01:31:15 I was a kid who was obsessed with movies. And in that movie, he's so fucking cool. He's so unbelievably cool. And, you know, he's in his late 30s, early 40s in that movie. He's not a kid or anything. But it's like just a few years. later where you're like, has this guy ever been in a movie before? Right.
Starting point is 01:31:32 He hit a stretch in the late 90s where it felt like he was one of the five biggest stars in the world again. Yeah. And he was, you know, Costner had started to lose some steam. Some of the guys from the 90s, 80s were losing steam. And he was kind of the backup choice to Hanks for a lot of different roles. Well, there's, and then there's that period where it feels like he and Nick Cage are the two biggest action stars in the world. Right. Which was strange.
Starting point is 01:31:56 Well, it was fun when they were in the same movie together. Yeah, I love Chalota. I like it when he's in bad movies. I like when he's in good movies. General's daughter is the only time it goes sideways. He's singular. He's a singular performer. Do you like civil action?
Starting point is 01:32:10 Yeah, I just rewatched it because we did a Robert Duval episode. Great Duval performance in that movie. It's not bad. It's a little stiff, but it's not bad. It's a very confusing similarly at the end of that movie. But that's kind of also at the end of his respectability. Well, we did this out of sequence, but good... The Good Sun, which we've already done, is coming next week.
Starting point is 01:32:31 And that's a much, much, much better movie. But from Helmut, CR, it's just... It's heaven. Just bangers left and right. Turn your brain off. Have some fun. Thanks to Craig. Thanks to Gahow as well.
Starting point is 01:32:43 Thanks to you guys. And we'll see you next week on The Good Sun.
