All right, guys, 2006.
This movie came out.
August 4th, 20 years ago, directed by Adam McKay, written by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay,
starring Will Ferrell, produced by Judd Apatow, made a bunch of money.
Everybody loved it.
What a time to be alive.
God damn, take me back.
America really did used to be built on hot, badass, nasty speed.
You know what I mean?
And we're not anymore.
Eleanor knew what she was talking about.
Eleanor knew what she was talking about.
I guess we can start here.
when this movie came out,
did you see it in theaters?
How old are you?
And where did it kind of fall
in the Will Ferrell ranking at the time?
And now?
I was 26, so I feel like I got to experience this the most
because it was, sorry, not 26.
I was 24 in 2006.
Just I'd graduated college.
And yeah, it was awesome.
I feel like in that era,
it was just every year
or even like a couple times a year,
they were coming out with these,
get your butt to the freaking theaters and watch this
because it's going to be the best thing you've ever seen
type movies every year.
I'd say this is like that.
Near the height of Will Ferrell's powers,
maybe not at the absolute height.
It was right there.
But yes, I remember just being so excited
to go to the theater, see these movies.
It felt like every movie was simultaneously more ridiculous
and had longer titles.
Like the subtitles of these movies are always just crazy.
The Ballad of Vibati.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I think Step Brothers was going to have the title,
something about the Catalina Wine Mixer was going to be in it.
Oh, my God.
And they decided to pull it.
Yeah.
The funny thing about these types of movies, I feel like, is you and I were like 12.
Like, I didn't see this in theaters.
I'm assuming you didn't either.
Or did you?
I think I did see it in theaters, but I was not allowed to see Anchorman in theaters.
So I saw this movie before Anchorman because I think there's a big difference
between being nine and being 12 or 13 or whatever for a Will Ferrell movie.
This is the defining comedy of my childhood.
This is number one?
This is the number one.
I don't know if it's the best comedy made in the 21st century, but it's my favorite.
And probably it's the one I've seen the most.
It's funny.
It's, it's, it's, it's, I was shocked at how quotable it was going back and rewatching it.
I've seen this movie live 20, 30 times, I think.
Because I didn't see this in a theater, but it was just a movie that was on all the time.
I had the DVD and you can just throw it on whenever.
Every scene in this movie is funny.
Like, I think there are some comedies where it dips and there's like 20 minutes where it's
like, oh, they're building the character, there's an art coming, or there's the action scene,
at the end of the movie.
Literally every scene of this movie is funny
and has iconic quotes.
It's pretty remarkable.
The pace is unbelievable in this movie.
They literally just are like, all right.
You always talk about this, like make movies shorter,
but there's no filler.
There's no backstory.
They just are like, kid, weird dad.
He's a NASCAR.
He's a driver.
And he has everything.
And it just absolutely rips.
And then I was also amazed.
How many of the funny stuff is like the first 50 minutes?
And also the back nine is way funnier that I even remember.
And that's like the hardest thing to do in a comedy.
Usually the last third is the least funny.
I don't really feel like this movie drops off a whole lot.
It's not like pancakes.
It's not what do you mean?
Not like all exciting at first, but by the end you're fucking sick of them.
I will note like, so highfids, you said this is your favorite Will Ferrell movie?
It is my favorite Will Ferrell.
Would you say that for you, Craig?
It's really hard.
I know Anchorman and Step Brothers are probably more beloved and more quoted overall.
But when I think of comedies, I think of Will Ferrell.
But when I think of Will Ferrell, I think of Talladegan X.
Yeah, I think when this movie came out, I think it's grown more now.
I don't know if people, when you ask them, name the best Will Ferrell comedy, I don't know how many people say Tal Daganites.
I think they would say Anchorman or stepbrothers.
Or maybe old school.
You know, he's like not the technical lead.
But I would probably say it's Anchorman or Stepbrothers.
But I agree with you.
This movie sticks with you.
It's aged beautifully.
Like all of the jokes still play.
The acting is great.
The supporting cast is phenomenal.
Oh, my God.
Yeah.
Like the awards that all the supporting castes won over the years is like crazy.
When they pitched this movie, it's funny, there used to be a category on the rewatchable
was a flex category that's not there anymore called, what is the five-word pitch of this movie?
McKay and Farrell actually did pitch this movie without a script on six words.
The pitch was Will Ferrell as a NASCAR driver.
And Sony was like, we're in.
Sold!
Cut the check.
This is from Farrell's agent.
There was a great piece in The Ringer written by Jake Crings Shreifel.
about an oral history
of kind of like Will Ferrell
as a sports movie icon
and Talladega Knights
and from Will's agent
he said there was no movie
there was no script
there was nothing
and Sony greenlit the movie
I don't know
if anyone's ever done that
in history
yeah
is there like a ringer pot
equivalent of that
it's like Chris Ryan
smoking cigarettes
ranking
movie bars
and you're like
fuck
I'm in
what pitch
would it have to be
let's talk about
Farrell and McKay
who kind of one of the all-time comedy duos
who I think in my head made more movies together than I thought
but it's really only four?
I also was surprised going back.
I would have said eight or ten.
So it's what, Anchorman?
It's Anchorman one and two.
So if you combine those,
it's the Anchorman franchise,
it's Talladega,
Step Brothers, and the other guys.
Those are the only movies that McKay directed
that Farrell acted in.
McKay also did the story for the campaign and Get Hard,
which starred Will Ferrell,
which are two movies I have not seen, actually.
I think I've seen Hard.
I've seen Parts of it.
Get Hard is Kevin Hart,
and the campaign is with Zach Alphenakis.
Right?
Never seen the campaign, actually, I don't think.
It's like a political satire,
but McKay didn't direct those.
So it's really only four movies.
It's Anchorman Talladega,
stepbrothers, and the other guys.
And the two of them, you know,
they were hired at SNL on the exact same day.
They became great friends.
They started Funny or Die,
which I don't know if you're,
One of the first videos I remember seeing growing up was the Pearl video.
The landlord?
Yeah, the landlord.
She's so mean.
Which was McKay's daughter.
Right.
Oh, really?
Yes.
Oh, my God.
Which was like one of the funniest.
That was like the very beginning.
You need to settle down.
The primordial ooze of the internet videos.
The funnier die one I always remember, we always, is the Batman one.
For Batman, it's sleepy time.
Oh, yeah, Pete Holmes.
And in order, that would surprise you.
Ass mouth edge.
And they started Gary Sanchez, their production company.
So, yeah, I don't know.
They split up.
in the late 2010s,
which is a lot of interesting history
about why they split up.
It's been written about
that it was basically McKay
wrote and created Winning Time
the show about Jerry Bus, Lakers,
and Farrell wanted to play Bus.
Oh, right, I've heard about this, yeah.
And McKay didn't want Farrell
and picked John C. Riley.
Oh, oh shit.
Yeah, which is crazy.
And McKay has spoken about this
in interviews and is like, yeah,
I didn't tell Will, I should have.
And I kind of, like, fucked up the whole thing.
and I get it
and I get why he's upset
and I get why he's upset
that's pretty crazy
Did they ever make up?
I mean, I don't think they've really worked together
again, maybe they've been like producers on things
but I don't really think so.
Why would you not want Will Ferrell as
Jerry Buss?
He's basically Ron Burgundy,
but just older and wealthier.
Also like if you, like so many more people
would have watched that if Will Ferrell was playing Jerry Buss.
Yeah.
You know?
Yeah.
So, yeah, it never ends well.
You know, you always,
you have like a 10, 15 year stretch
And then it's hard to keep these things going.
In general, with comedy, I feel like we can talk about Will Ferrell now.
I think he's the most influential comedy figure of the 21st century, probably not a hot take.
I think he's also the last great American comedy star, probably.
Comedy movie star.
I mean, that's kind of what I was saying before is like, if he's in a movie, I'm going to it.
That's why they were able to sell this movie without, like, with no script or whatever.
Yes.
For basically like 10, 12 years, it was like whatever Will Ferrell's doing, I'm in.
Yes.
Because since he kind of entered a different part of his career,
no one's really taken the mantle.
It was like Melissa McCarthy in the 2010s,
I think had a couple big movies.
Obviously, bridesmaids him like spy and heat.
What about Seth Rogen?
Yeah, I always felt like Seth Rogen himself was not the Will Ferrell-style draw.
It was more about like the ensemble, the concept,
like the Apatow gang was what brought you in.
When I was like 14, it was.
I want to go see Will Ferrell.
He can do any character.
Rogan is not really doing characters like Will Ferrell.
Shameless pandering to you hosting this episode.
But Will Ferrell actually, to me, is like the Steph Curry of comedy
in that he somehow has the highest three-point percentage,
even though he's also taking the most threes.
Like, he just made a lot of movies.
And you're right.
And there's like a way of like, same way actually the Steph Curry misses,
you kind of just forget about.
And you all the, like, we literally forgot about the campaign and Gathart.
All those kind of get like evolved.
Like it doesn't get punished for it.
But it's kind of like the way his style.
is just actually making jokes
where it's just so many jokes
that you end up with like gems
but that was kind of the style
he was just cranking out movies.
I don't know who like right now
you could say Tim Robinson's trying
I think he's really funny
and I think he's kind of even trying
to do the same character style
of like the cocky idiot
the underqualified
overconfident guy
you know but his style is just more niche
yeah he also just doesn't have
the commanding presence
do you think this is maybe just like
too simple
but Will Ferrell is huge.
He's like a big man.
And also, I think he's, like you can tell he played sports the way he moved.
Like, he can pull off an athlete.
He did so many sports movies.
He can pull off an athlete.
Even though he's obviously not super athletic anymore, he can move like it.
Like he's done it before kind of deal.
And I don't know if anyone had sort of the actual physical gravitas that he had.
Maybe Vince Vaughn, who was, I think, one of, like, maybe one of his rivals in terms of, like, biggest comedy stars of that era.
Ben Stiller was quite a bit smaller.
But it's still a physicality to him.
Yeah, he did.
I do think athleticism and like frame, body control is like one of the more underrated parts of being good at comedy.
Yeah.
You go, like you look at guys like Belushi and Candy and all these guys who you look at them and you're, you wouldn't think anything of them.
But they're also, they're like secretly very athletic and coordinated dudes.
Even the big guys have the like the Trent Williams athleticism where it's like you wouldn't know what their shuttle time is.
Great footwork.
And it matters.
Even Jim Carrey, like, they all know how to move their body because comedy is half physical.
Dude, I was reading about Will Ferrell was, like, closely connected to USC during the P. Carroll era.
Yeah.
And he, like, went to one of their practices one time and put on, you know, like full, full, like, pads and how and everything was, like running routes.
They were like, who fuck is this guy?
And then he took up his own with like, oh, my God, it's Will Ferrell.
That's the thing about Will Ferrell is, like, the ubiquity is, it's almost hard to explain now how much he was always putting out a movie, but he was always doing weird stuff.
like he was an ushered at a Lakers game.
He was doing stuff like that.
I forgot until I read that Jake article in the ringer that he did the,
I want to play nine positions in a baseball game or 10, I guess, technically.
Oh, right.
And then I was like,
I forgot that he went to 10 or five different teams to play
because he was like only going to do two positions,
but he's always doing some kind of viral stunt.
Yeah.
So he was just always around doing stuff.
And it never feels forced with him.
Like it's all love of the game stuff.
You know how there's kind of like the Bill Murray lore?
It's like Bill Murray showed up at my dinner party and blah, blah, blah.
Yes.
Farrell's the same way, but it doesn't feel performative.
He truly just does it because he thinks it's funny.
He'll just show up and do that, yeah, the Lakers game where he dresses as a security guard,
but he's like not trying to go viral.
I feel like he just loves jokes.
Yeah.
It's a good bit.
Yeah.
You talk about Will Ferrell playing sports, though.
He might be the comedy sports star ever.
I mean, he rattles off kicking and screaming Talladega Knights, Blades of Glory and Semipro in
four years.
And it's kind of like after Die Hard when they just.
started ripping off diehards and it was like diehard on a boat under siege it was kind of like
will feral plays what sport well pharaoh plays sport yeah totally and you could just get away with that for
five years i mean after after they did nascar which you know is they were like trying to be
careful not to be making fun of it but nascar is very like has a spot in an american culture
and and then they're like what how can we top that so we're going to do figure skating like
what i mean what would be like the next sport that you'd want to see him do that's even like more
ridiculous than this. I was looking at his IMDB in his upcoming projects. It says, and this was part of
the interview on the ringer piece, that they've like bounced around. They've basically gone through
every sport and they're like, what would be the funniest? Yeah. It says he has an upcoming
e-sports comedy in the works. Okay. But then the log line is like exactly what you think. It's like
Will Ferrell plays video games. It's like washed up. Former athlete thinks he can get back into the
game with e-sports. It's like every other story. Yeah. But sure I'm in. I mean, it's doing golf right
He's doing the Hawk on Netflix.
I do want to read, I just want to read Farrell's run from 01 to 2010.
And just how unassailable and ridiculous it is.
And we'll probably never see this again in comedy.
This is what he does.
Some of these are supporting roles and some of these are lead.
But still, it's worth mentioning all of them.
From 2001 to 2010, he goes, Zoolander, old school, elf, Anchorman, Starsky and Hutch, kicking and screaming, wedding crashers, Talladega Nights,
Blades of Glory, semi-pro, stepbrothers, and the other guys.
All of those are actually incredible and still funny.
I would say five of those are among the most iconic comedies ever made,
at least for the 21st century or people in our generation.
I think what's craziest about that list is the fifth funniest movie on that list
is probably the other guys, which has some of the best jokes I've ever seen in any movie ever.
Super underrated.
It has to be the most underrated feral movie.
I don't know if people were just getting sick of it by then,
but that movie, I just watched it the other week on a plane.
It was amazing.
And the movies that you mentioned that he is a minor character or sort of like an extended cameo.
He is arguably the funniest person in that movie and some of those movies, like the move got to in Zoolander.
You can toss in Austin Powers too.
He makes a brief.
Yeah, and he's the guy who's like, I'm very badly burned.
I'm glad you're here.
Hold on.
I'm very badly burned.
Yeah, that's the thing is not only can he lead a movie and dominate it, he's the Dionne Waiters every time he shows up for 10 minutes.
Like Chas, what's his name in Wedding Crash?
He's Chas.
Literally the most best part of wedding
Crashers.
He's the best part of Eastbounded down.
Yeah.
When he's basically just showed up
and wanted to make Danny McBride laugh.
Ashley Schaefer?
Let the boy watch.
Let the boy.
A welter in a.
A bluish hue.
I said no.
Let the boy watch.
Ashley Schaefer.
Also underrated the names
in all these movies elite.
I have it written down.
They must have spent so much time.
Farreley McKay and the whole fair,
they know how to name a fucking movie character, man.
Like all of these are just,
Off the top of the head, you know it.
Ricky Bobby, Ron Burgundy, Buddy the Elf, Frank the Tank,
Chas Michael Michaels, you have Dale and Brennan and Jackie Moon.
I'm glad you brought that up because there are so many times where I neither know the,
I just never know the character's name and I just call them by the actor's name.
And they somehow have Will Ferrell be really famous, but we call them Ricky Bobby.
It's something whenever we do rewatchables and I'm watching like Bill, Chris and Sean,
I'm always so impressed at how well they're able to remember the character's names and they can speak about them as the characters.
I'm always like, oh yeah, when Gwyneth Poutro does this.
Yeah, yeah.
But you don't have to do that with Will Ferrell movies.
Frank the Tank?
Yeah.
Frank Ricard?
It's perfect.
Blue?
Just everything.
Yeah, my boy, blue.
Also, they just almost make yellable names.
Ricky!
Yeah.
Brick.
Jolsey Riley was supposed to be Brick.
His name's Brick.
So I'm stepping on the categories.
We'll get to that later.
I do want to talk about, though, this always happens with a comedy.
it's hard to sustain.
Yeah.
It just is.
After the other guys in 2010,
here are the next movies he did
from 2010 to basically 2020.
So he does Step Brothers in 08,
he does the other guys in 2010,
and then he goes on the office in 2011.
Oh, right?
Remember that?
He replaced Steve Crowe, right?
He replaced DeAngelo Vickers.
Totally forgot about that.
Which I loved the office.
I never loved seeing Will Farrell, though.
I didn't really watch that era.
I liked Robert California more than most people.
I didn't like him to be honest.
It was a classic.
It's like every time they do it
when like Charlie Sheen leaves two and a half minutes
like just end the show.
But he does the office in 2011.
He was 44 years old.
And then he does the campaign.
He does Anchorman 2.
Get Hard.
Daddy's home.
Zoolander 2.
The house.
Daddy's home 2.
And Holmes and Watson in 2018,
which was officially,
I remember when that came out.
And I was like, oh wow,
Farrell and Riley are back.
Yeah.
It didn't work.
And I remember thinking if they just didn't do British accents,
the movie might have worked.
I was my friend Chris's take, and I was like, it was a great take.
I'm like, if they just didn't have the accents, it probably would have worked.
The list, you reading that list reminds me, I just saw an interview with like 50 cent the other day where they're like, are you making new music?
And he's like, no.
I got a lot of money.
He's like, I'm not able to make rap anymore.
He's like, what am I going to talk about, doing the laundry and like filing my taxes?
It's just hard to keep going.
I think, you know, it was around his mid-40s when it started to taper off and really when he got into his 50s.
The list is very short of comedy movie stars in their 50s still crushing it.
So he was 38 when he filmed this.
I looked it up because I was like, I can't actually figure out how old he was.
He's kind of ageless.
He plays like a 20, he plays like someone a little bit younger, I think, in the movie.
But he's always kind of doing that.
I never, Ferrell always just seems like 40 to me.
Yes.
He has been, eternally 40.
He does have the Bill Murray thing where Bill Murray looked at like 50, 45, 48 years old
old from 30 to 60.
Yes.
Well, also, I always like that Farrell, like, never cared about taking a shirt off.
He was never super in shake, didn't care.
would always like poke fun at it. He's huge, hairy, super tall. He has that weird, like, crease in his
belly. He just, like, doesn't give a shit. I don't know where that's coming from. Which is also a huge
part of comedy, just leaning into it. Ferrell's great just because I think he had the, the, it at least
felt as though he was comfortable with other people being funny with him in movies. He didn't need
to overpower every movie. Yeah. He really surrounded himself with other people who were super funny.
Like him having, like a counterpart. And most of the movies he did, whether it's like John C. Riley or, or, you know,
like the crew and anchorman.
I kind of respect that.
Like you said, Steph,
it's like,
Steph was okay with having Clay.
And I think Will was fine
with, like, being able to play off other people.
You need, needs Clay.
Like, you need someone to actually reach that level to actually.
I mean, I think he needs a John C. Riley.
Totally.
You can see it in all the bits, too.
Like Craig said,
he's not trying to overpower everyone.
He's, like,
as they're going through scenes,
there's so many scenes in this movie
where you can see them just on the verge of cracking up.
Oh, my God.
Every time.
Like the knife and the leg scene.
I mean, just
Get the knife out with the other knife
Oh my God
Cut around the meat
Cut around the meat
They're in a hospital
And they're talking about around the meat
There's like nobody
I don't know why there's no one helping
Cut around the meat
Don't you put that knife in your leg
It really is a no skips movie
Like every scene I was
I was trying to find the weak link
And I was like I don't
I can't
I don't have one
I don't think there's a scene you can cut
Because like even you could say
Oh maybe like
You know the grandma teaching the kids
how to, but I'm like, that's great.
All the Gary Cole stuff is great.
Are we doing a weak link right now?
No, no.
Just to your point, though, about the falloff is,
ironically, Will Ferrell went on the shop with,
it was LeBron and Maverick Carter and our co-worker here, Rich Paul.
Right.
And they were talking.
I consider Rich Paul and I colleagues.
We're basically colleagues.
Yeah.
Yeah. Same level.
And he literally just, it was like,
Will Ferrell says, I don't make films.
I make movies.
Yeah.
He's like, film.
are nuanced and planned.
And we kind of just show up and we're like,
yeah, I want to rehearse? Nah, let's just go.
Yeah.
And I think that over time you run out of ideas,
and I think the perfect example of that is Anchorman 2,
which I think everyone wanted to be good.
There's that stupid thing where they like,
or in a lighthouse with a shark.
The shark.
And he's like pretending to be blind,
but he can see.
And like, that's just the Talladega paralyzed scene.
And it's like he just,
he did 15 years of uninterrupted,
incredible ideas.
And then he kind of just did them again in the next movies.
Yeah.
I know, it's interesting.
Like, my brother's-in-law are in their 20s, and one's 25, one's 28.
And the 25-year-old, his relationship to Will Ferrell is not as strong as I thought.
Like, there are movies I could pull up.
I'm like, oh, have you seen Taldey Good Nights?
And he's like, oh, maybe, I don't know.
And it's just so shocking to me that, I don't know, we're just in such a weird place now.
I don't know what it's been.
I mean, here and there are good movies popped up.
Like, I think Game Night's great.
That was in 2018 and Book Smart's good.
and I remember when Blockers came out at the end of the 2010s.
John Sina?
Yeah, and I thought Blockers was okay.
But we've been in such a weird spot and no one's been able to replace Will Ferrell.
And I think it's made me appreciate him even more.
And I think it's made this movie and this run age even better because there's just,
it almost seems unfathomable now that there could be a star that could be doing this,
where every year they're in a new movie and all of America is going to see it.
That's what I wanted to ask you about is who else could do this.
Is it Shane Gillis?
Like, could Shane Gillis do this again?
I think it's Shane Gillis, although, I don't know.
I think what Farrell is able to do is, like, he can really play characters.
I know he's kind of always doing the same thing.
But Farrell's ability on SNL, as somebody who can just, like, morph into anyone really works.
I don't know if Gillis has that.
Sometimes the stand-up becoming a huge movie star, it obviously works sometimes.
But I don't know if I can see-
Gillis.
She plays himself and everything.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I think it would have to be him, though.
even he's making a TV show right now on Netflix Tires, which is really funny.
But he's just basically being himself.
Right.
And I don't know if it's like Shane Gillis is a ping pong player.
Shane Gillis is a cook.
I kind of think people would go see that, though.
I kind of think it would work.
Well, he's the most famous comedian in the world, and it would have to be him.
I don't really know who else would be doing it.
Like I said, Tim Robinson, I think he's too niche.
And outside of that, there's no crew.
Like the Farrell McKay crew, Stiller and Owen Wilson and all them.
And then you move to Apatow and Seth Rogen.
which became like even more improv heavy
and it was just like stoner
stoners in a room improvising
and then after that once we got to like
this is the end whatever it dissipated
no group has replaced them
and now we're just in No Man's Land
I do think the Tim Robinson
parallel with Farrell though is
and maybe there's probably a bunch of examples
of this but in that era
in the 2000s 2010s even
we communicate like my friends
and I communicated through movie quotes like we could
do an entire conversation it's just
just movie quotes from Will Ferrell.
Like all different, like Anchorman was huge.
You know, and I think, like, Tim Robinson is kind of similar to that.
Like, we, so many Tim Robinson quotes, the memes, he is really, really memeable.
And that's, like, become part of, you know, the zeitgeist or whatever.
Like, we just talk about.
I haven't even seen.
I think, like, all of I think you should leave.
And I still quote scenes I haven't seen.
I got to figure out how to make money on this.
There's a new Marvel movie out that's supposed to be nuts.
I totally agree.
To that point, I actually think if you deleted all the Will Ferrell lines from my brain,
I don't think I could have a conversation with my friends.
I don't know how to communicate with other men without Will Ferrell.
It is weird now.
Do we just become best friends?
Like memes are becoming bigger than the source material, you know?
I have not seen that many episodes of I think you should leave.
And yet I know like 50 quotes.
Yeah, the hot dog, the 55 burgers, 50, like all that stuff.
You don't even have to have seen those episodes and you get it.
I just think you're here for the zip line.
It's just so odd that that's where we are.
It's almost like now how they say how many followers you have is less relevant.
It's just like how many views the video gets.
Yes.
It's like in TikTok, it's like it doesn't even matter necessarily if you have a million followers or 10,000.
But you're right.
You can get the quotes in the cultural water without actually having digested it.
Yes.
Like I think you should leave.
I don't know how popular it is.
I think it's relatively popular, maybe more cult following.
And yet the memes are ginormous.
And everybody knows the memes, even though people maybe didn't see the show.
We're all trying to figure out who did this.
Yes.
You know, like the hot dog.
I haven't even seen that scene.
I don't think I've seen the zip line thing.
Yeah.
Oh, my God, the zip line.
I've seen the 40-second clip.
Is it Ronnie?
Is it Ronnie?
Yeah.
Ronnie, I think you're just here for the zip line.
He's like, what?
And then it's like the maintenance guy's like, he broke it.
He's like, shut up, Mike.
Anyway.
This movie is John C. Riley, who one of the best character actors ever.
Yeah.
can do drama, do comedy,
has worked with like PTA and Martin Scorsese
and then just slipped in and became Will Ferrell's number two,
kind of like Jeff Daniels with Jim Carrey.
Yeah.
And honestly,
he's kind of like Cal Notton to Ricky Bobby in real life with Will Ferrell.
He's the number two.
He's happy to do it.
Clearly the real life thing,
like what you're saying about the winning time thing
where John C. Riley gets to be Jerry Buss and Will Ferrell freaks out.
That's literally the, well, if you win.
Yeah, yeah.
How am I going to?
And he's like, yeah.
You're like, Adam McKay.
thought that through it was like, I want to try this in real life.
It's a magic man.
Now you see him.
Now you go.
Oh, damn.
It's actually awesome.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And Riley got his shot.
I mean, after Talladega, he gets, he gets Walk Hard.
Which I know you is a good for you.
I mean, didn't that like,
Walk Hard is hilarious.
Didn't that kind of pause all those music movies being made for like 10 years,
the way Austin Powers changed James Bond?
I never, yeah, I never had a stronger relationship to Walk Hard.
It didn't do very well.
And I think it's why John C.
Riley didn't really get another lead comedy
role shot. I think that was it and it didn't really work.
And then they kind of like, he went back and did stepbrothers.
Just a little bit too much full frontal penis
in Walk Hard for people's taste, maybe.
I don't know. I think it's a classic.
I actually rewatch it like a month ago.
And it still holds up in my opinion.
I'm cutting half pretty bad.
The weave scene's great.
The weed scene is you don't want any of this shit.
Sounds expensive.
It's the cheapest drug there is.
The movie also has Sasha Barron Cohen, Jane Lynch, Gary Cole, Amy Adams, Michael Clark Duncan, and Molly Shannon.
Elite supporting cast, again, no misses across the board. Jack McBrayer, David Keckner. It's just like everyone in it's great.
The movie made $163 million on a $72 million budget, not bad.
But this was in the DVD era where it's like the budget, you can't look at the Wikipedia budget.
That's probably half of what it actually did it. It made like 90 million in DVD sales. And then I'm sure.
a ton more beyond that.
It was the largest opening of Will Ferrell's career at the time.
I think it still might be the most profitable Adam McKay movie.
No Roger Ebert review.
But we will take a quick break and then we'll get into most rewatchable scene where there's like 15.
The whole movie.
This episode is brought to you by a zip recruiter.
Here in the rewatchables, we talk a lot about strange things or crazy things or committed things that actors did to,
prepare for a role. I think a recent one is The Odyssey, Matt Damon, who is my age, by the way,
getting in absolutely crazy shape, gave up gluten, worked out every day, had to get, you know,
looking fit and buff and skinny for Odysseus because he was away for eight to 10 years,
committed to it. Now he's going to get a best actor nomination. When you're hiring,

Today's most rewatchable scene is presented by Mazda.
There's driving and then there's driving with peace of mind,
knowing you're behind the wheel of consumer reports
his safest new car brand, Mazda.
But more on that later.
All right, most rewatchable scene.
You guys know the drill, right?
I'll go through all the scenes and then you pick your favorite one at the end.
Sometimes people don't know.
Sometimes people are like, that's mine.
Hold it.
And then we'll get to it at that.
All right, all right.
Opening title card, not a scene,
but Eleanor Roosevelt quote
fucking sets the tone
I know exactly what I'm getting into
like honestly that's the quickest tone setter
I've ever seen for a movie
I'm like I completely get the entire ethos
of the movie with just a title card
Yeah
Three little vignettes to start the movie
The birth in the car
The kids stealing the car in class
Or at the grocery store
And then Rees Bobby at Career Day
It's like these three tight little vignettes
You get if you're not first or last
and then we get the Ricky as an adult
I don't know what to do with my hands
and then he starts winning montage
we get I Piss Excellence
Car handle real good
just put it out
Just put it out the guy just like very gently
touches his head
Just put him out
Car had a real nice
I just love
so good
That's just stuff that like
You just that's not in the script
I just love that
Yeah.
Car handle real nice.
You get the,
Ricky Bobby's got two first names.
I was trying to think of the owner,
the Dennett's.
Yeah.
I want you to,
what's the football comp there?
What's the NFL owner comp?
With the owner of Dennett and then the son taking over?
It's got to be Jerry and Stephen Jones.
Is that?
Robly right.
But then who is Ricky Bobby to Stephen Jones?
Who do you got?
Good question.
Romo's the layup, but I mean.
Do we have, is there an Al Davis?
Mark Davis.
Oh,
that's pretty good.
Yeah, microwave John Gruden.
It's not bad.
We have the dinner scene.
Yeah.
Where we meet Walker and Texas Ranger.
My beautiful son.
TR, as we call it.
I don't know.
Summer's been ready for hours.
I've been slaving over this for hours.
Her accent's perfect.
Dear Lord, baby Jesus.
Leslie Bibbs is great.
I love the way he's talking to you.
You brought this on yourself, Chip?
That's what happened.
When I see Kai speak up to Hyphitz, I love the way he's talking to you, Hyvitz.
You brought the heat.
She said, I have a lumpy butt.
And then I said, fuck you.
And she yelled at me, and I'm pissed in my pants.
I love him.
He pissed in his pants.
There's so many, this scene is one of the more iconic moments of the movie.
Praying the dear Lord, baby Jesus, eight pounds, six ounces.
Newborn infant Jesus.
Don't even know a word yet.
I like to think of Jesus in a t-shirt.
Hey, Cowell, why don't you shut the hell up?
He's like, yes, ma'am.
That relationship's great.
I'm all jacked up on Mountain Dew.
I'm coming at you like a spider monkey.
There's just a remarkable amount of quotes in this movie.
I threw grandpa's war medals off the bridge.
Sounds like a good day.
Dude, you know the meme of like, I'll put it in the Louvre?
Yeah.
Literally this scene made apeshit a thing.
Oh, I'll go ape shit.
I go ape shit on your ass.
You know what happens a few years later?
Jay-Z makes a song with Beyonce
called Ape Shit
and then they film the music video
in the fucking Louvre
with the Mona Lisa.
You think saying apeshit in this movie
inspired Jay-Z?
Yeah, I mean, think about
Watch the Throne
literally starts by clipping
Blades of Glory.
Yeah.
One song, one song only.
Like, no one song
is provocative.
That was a J.Z. Kanye's song.
And then,
starting with a Will Ferrell movie
and then two years later,
they make a song.
called apeshit. Is that a half-ass internet research or is that just your opinion? Like, did you
see that online? Strong theory. I do not think that Beyonce and Jay-Z make a song called
Apeshit without this movie. Wow. And they literally filmed, they shut down the Louvre at night to
film there. High Fitz invented the piano key necktie. I did. I don't think that's true,
but I like to think, I like to think it's true. He has really good half-a-thage series.
I'll ask Rich to ask Jay-Z and then maybe we can get an answer. Honestly, we might be closer to him than we
think, you're right. Degrees of separation
aren't that many.
Mini scene, I love Ricky Bobby winning
the race in reverse, which
would just be like the biggest story of all time. Just flipping them off.
I don't know, that was just fucking cool.
Do they go
that fast backwards? I was wondering that.
I don't want to step on the Vincent Chase. Can they go as fast
backwards as they can go forward? Definitely not.
I don't want to step on the Vincent Chase so they
good at the job, but all the other race car drivers in this
movie suck. Oh, what are you going to?
Really? We're going to do that? I mean, imagine
a new guy was going backwards. I'm just saying.
Says here, ape shit was invented in the 1950s.
But I think he's saying that it...
What the fuck? Did you Google it? What are you talking about?
I did. I was curious.
He's saying it inspired Jason.
You were alive. Did anyone use that term in the 90s?
Oh, absolutely, yeah.
I feel like it exploded after this movie.
Like, I never heard it to this movie.
This says no gas powered cars cannot drive as fast in reverse.
Although...
They don't have many...
They only have one gear.
What are you talking about?
It says electric cars have the physical capability to do so.
Oh, wow.
So eat that.
No fucking chance.
Okay.
I like that many scene.
Then we get the bar scene where we meet Jean Girard.
Right.
And I love when the music's playing.
And what's his name?
Turn that off.
He's like his brains about it.
It's like making him short circuit.
We keep it on from profile and perfect.
Jazz.
Jean, we meet John.
He breaks Ricky's arm.
We get the creps, really thin pancakes.
Him drinking the beer sideways.
What he's like pinned there.
You are disrespecting me.
Dude, he's like, don't, don't do it, Ricky.
These colors don't run.
I had a whole mess of crapes this morning.
A whole mess.
That's another quote that we used to say.
I had a whole mess of crepes this morning.
Very thin pancake.
This good comp is fair compromise, no?
He compromises immediately.
I feel like Jean was reasonable in that scene, actually.
Super reasonable.
Telly breaks his arm.
He gave him a compromise, dude.
Compound fracture.
I mean, if he had just said,
really thin pancakes, it would have been fun.
Then we have the montage of Jean winning.
We have Ricky's crash.
And then we have the hospital scene, which I feel like is the next kind of keystone scene of this movie where we have, I hope you both have sons, handsome, beautiful, articulate sons.
Articulate.
And they have the leg taken away from them.
Don't you put that evil on me, Ricky Bobby?
No, he's like, come and I say, no, no, no.
He needs to know.
Beautiful, articulate suns.
Articulate is unbelievable.
I can't believe he chose that word.
You know it was improvised too.
How many times have you, I feel like for me it's 10,000
where it's like, don't you put that evil on me?
Oh my God, yeah.
It's one of the top five quotes from the movie, I would say.
Yeah.
Even the brief scene where he's in the wheelchair playing basketball and he's kicking people.
I think he gets up and takes the ball.
The like random line that stays with you, like the first time you watch it,
It's like, you know, all the first or last.
But the line that I actually cackle every time, he's like, Cal is like, psychosomatic.
So you mean he can start a fire with his thoughts?
Doctor's like, no.
It's just all on his head.
Yes.
You get the using the second knife to pry out the first knife.
Cut around to me.
Which is maybe one of the funniest movies.
The sound it makes when it goes to like the squish.
Dude, when he like bangs the second knife in with like a hammer,
It's crazy.
I think I had to watch that 70 times
until I realized that they're in a hospital.
It's really good.
I'm paralyzed.
You are not paralyzed.
You are not paralyzed.
Don't you stick that knife in your leg?
Why, he doesn't.
It's the noise it makes.
It's like a squelch noise.
So then we have kind of Ricky's fall,
and then we have the wife swap scene or like the family swap scene.
Oh, God.
Which is, I imagine.
He's like kissing his, like, this Walker and Texas Ranger
on the head as he comes there playing a game together.
That's like me coming home week eight after Luther
Burton is officially a flop and Liz is just with
high fits and I'm like, what's going on?
She's like, sorry, Kristen Watson was a better pick.
I was gone for three hours.
Luther Burton was hurt for one game.
Ricky, your marriage was a hollow shell.
He's like, his whole house is like,
they're playing jenga.
Everything got his arms around the kid.
Dude, she's like, this marriage has been over a long time.
He's like, no, I honestly did not know that.
He did not know that.
Did not know that.
You're wrecking my life.
We get Magic Man.
Now you see me.
Now you don't.
Mini scene that I love is when Cal calls Ricky at night from Ricky's old house.
So great.
And he's like, when you have the stereo turned on and the TV, how do you handle the volume?
And he's like, why do you need to listen to stereo and TV?
Because I like to party.
He's like, obviously.
Why am I talking to you, man?
He's like, all right, I'll call you tomorrow.
I feel like a thing I never even noticed until like this time is that he's like,
I think your house is haunted.
He's like, it's not haunted.
It's the new house.
And then hang out.
And he's like, out.
And he goes out.
He's eating banana.
That could have been like a whole part of the movie.
Yeah, seriously.
Probably was.
I do always watch these Apatow movies.
And I'm like, man, there actually is somehow three amazing.
They have three hours of D-Role that they just didn't yet.
Oh, yeah.
I mean, like, there was like Anchorman.
They had enough for a second movie.
All these movies, I feel like the first cuts are super long.
Anchorman, I'm convinced that it was supposed to end with the bear smelling the menstruation,
which they had like literally set up perfectly, but then the bear almost killed somebody,
and they were like, we're done.
We can't do that anymore.
That was jelly, the bear.
Three more, Applebee's.
And you get kind of the first or last realization, which is sad, which actually hits.
When Reese is on the street and he's like, hell, Rick, guys, how when I said that?
Hell, he could be second, third, fourth.
Even fifth.
He could be even fifth.
it kind of hits.
I like how the dad just gets itchy anytime it's like
even close to harmony in the family.
I got to start a fight.
I got to start being mean to somebody.
That's how I feel like when my family's playing a board game
and everything's going fine.
This needs more anarchy.
Yeah, he's just like, you know what, fuck it.
You guys are cheating.
And then it's like, no, we're not.
And then it's in a fight.
Reese is literally the most outlandish character I've ever seen.
But then he just has that one line.
He's like, I don't know what bone people have that makes him act right.
But I wasn't born with it.
I'm like, that actually was oddly cutting.
That's a thing.
Apologies.
I missed a scene one of the best.
The other of like the pantheon scenes is the cougar or Reese Bobby getting Rick's back in.
Where'd you get a cougar?
I trapped it.
Real simple son.
Feeding a whole piece of cops are coming.
There's a kilo of Colombian bam bam under the car.
What do you do?
You get hairy on your peaches or what?
I love real simple son.
Gary Cole is great.
Okay.
We have the Amy Adams speech.
Oh, God.
Which I have to imagine would be Harrison Bucker's favorite speech
a woman could ever give in a film.
It includes the lines.
I'll read it for you.
Harrison Bucker would love this.
You need to rev your engine.
You need to fire it up and you need to grab a hold of that line
between speed and chaos,
and you need to wrestle it to the ground like a demon cobra.
And then when the fear rises up in your belly, you use it,
and you know that the fear is powerful
because it's been there for billions of years,
and it is good, and you use it and you ride it.
You ride it like a skeleton horse with the gates of hell.
And then you win, Ricky, you win, and you don't win for anyone else.
You win for you.
And you know why?
Because a man takes what he wants.
He takes it all.
And you're a man, aren't you, Ricky?
Aren't you?
Ricky Bobby is not a thinker.
He's a, you're a driver.
Yeah. Bucker's just...
Susan, I've never heard you talk like this.
Flex category, the Harrison Butker Award for...
Speeds out, yeah.
Speech that would make Harrison Bucker see it.
Kind of an amazing moment.
Amy Adams just comes out of nowhere.
She, I didn't realize now that, like, she wasn't really famous when this movie came out.
Is that right?
Because I'm like, why is she in this movie?
It's an incredibly small role.
She did catch me if you can.
She was like the brief love interest three years before that.
And then she did a movie called Junebug that she wrapped on when she booked Talladega Nights.
So she ended up getting an Oscar nomination for Junebug.
But that all happened while Talladega Nights was happening.
So I'm not saying she wouldn't have taken the role had she been an Oscar nominated actress.
But it was like right as Amy Adams was about to take off.
But you always just.
about the glasses ponytail. It's funny to literally just see her glasses at a ponytail.
She takes the glasses off.
Let's her hair down.
Fantastic scene in the bar.
Oh, amazing.
Are we about to get it on right now?
Everybody turn around.
Look away.
Or we make an animal sounds.
And then we have the final scene, the final race, the foot race, which I have to say,
I got chills. When they start running on foot to the finish line, I legitimately get chills.
You're just a sports fan. It is moving.
It is moving. Sturs the soul.
So what do you got?
What's most rewatchable, DK?
Well, can we add more?
Oh, sure.
The commercials and commercial bloopers.
Yeah.
I have that for my gondoli, things I just enjoy.
Yes.
Butter in my ass things I just enjoy.
Fake ads in commercials.
I mean, fake ads in movies are just, they always work for me.
Yeah.
I literally have the same thing for that category.
It always works.
Just these things, nothing for Christmas, like the Jack Hawk 9,000.
Jack Hawk, 9,000.
The holidays are just around the corner.
What better gift to give a loved one
than the Jack Hawk 9,000.
Available at Walmart.
We're competitors on the racetrack, but we want to talk to you about something very serious.
Packs of wild dogs control of most of the American major cities.
Controlling most of the major cities.
If you don't chew big red, then fuck you.
I have said that one million dollars in my life.
And I know like it probably has an age grade.
When he's doing the prune candy ad.
Yeah, right.
When I first, as a 13-year-old that fucking killed me.
Yeah.
Dude, this sticker is dangerous and inconvenient, but I do love fig newtons.
Bodies that look so good, you're going to want to talk to it.
From McCready's funeral services.
These bodies are going to look so good, you're going to want to talk to it.
98% of people will die at some point in their life.
Did you guys watch the extended cut of the original?
The original.
Because I think some of the lines you're quoting are not in the original.
No, the best bloopers, those are during the end credits.
Yeah, yeah.
And the end credits, they're just kind of playing and they're cutting between.
Snow blindness and cats.
Snowblindness and cats.
Scares the living shit out of us.
I would love nothing more than I'd watch Will Ferrell do fake ads for like seven.
Oh, 100%.
I think the best scene, it's hard because like you said, every scene is great.
My favorite scene is probably the dinner, honestly.
The dinner and grace.
I want you to do this, Grace good.
the dinner
the yeah the grace
the baby Jesus
six pounds seven ounces
never known a word
he had a beard
he was a man
he had a beard
I feel like we do that all the time
I know we say that probably once a week
I think
he was a man
I made a beard
I make the money
I pick the Jesus
dude I think this was the
21.6 million dollars
ow
I love that money
I think this was the most
quoted scene of my childhood.
I think that's right. It's got to be up there.
Because I'm going to be on your ass like a spider monkey.
I'm all jacked up on Mountain Dew.
Thank you, Lord, Baby, Jesus.
Like, if you just kind of go down the line,
like the amount of quotes that I just are just stuck in my brain from this,
I think it was the most quoted line until, I mean, I guess maybe things later,
but I don't think even my friends were even quoting Anchorman,
or as much as this movie.
It's a good call. It could be up there with one of the volume-wise,
the most quotes of any scene in the 2000s.
Yeah, quotes per minute.
Quotes per minute that still stick to this day.
I love the way he's talking to you, Chip.
Yeah.
The t-shirt thing.
Dude, that one is, he's like,
I picture Jesus in a t-shirt
because it's like formal,
but I like the party.
He's like Leonard Skinner's front row.
He's just hammered drunk.
And I'm just hammered drunk.
Big eagle wings.
How don't you just shut the hell up?
Yes, ma'am.
He's like a changeling.
Like a, you ever seen man-a-changeling?
It is really good.
I mean, this is like the perfect example of that era where they would do 18 different takes of a line and just like see what stuck.
So funny.
Also, Taco, Domino's KFC and the always delicious Taco Bell.
I didn't even remember that he had sponsored the grace.
Without powering.
Contractually obligated to mention the upcoming flavor.
I don't remember what the flavor was.
Blue power.
Blueberry Mountain Mist.
Yeah. That's kind of a new level of sponsorship.
I didn't know it's possible.
Grace.
Is having to do sponsorships in the privacy of your own home to just your family?
I mean, that's like guerrilla marketing right there.
To spread the good word?
Yeah.
So do you have the dinner.
The dinner scene.
I think it has to be the dinner, but I do want to shout out the bar scene because I think
the bar scene is sneaky, actually unbelievable and how also how funny it is.
Because the whole, like, would have France ever give the world?
It's like, democracy, existentialism and limonage atroix.
Those are some good things.
But the other one is just the crepes.
These colors don't run.
He's actually, Rick, I had mess crepes this morning.
Also, just the conversation into the bar where they're like, yeah, my grandmother, her birthday's coming up.
I don't know what to get her. She's turning 85s. Get her a coffin.
I love that that scene's in the movie.
Doesn't need to be there. It's great.
That was by that guy. We'll get to that one.
Yeah, yeah. I think it has to be the grace.
I agree. It's dinner.
Supper.
Supper.
Supper's ready.
Slaving over this for hours.
I'm slaving over this for hours.
Okay. Today's most rewatchable scene was presented by Mazda and the mom.
Mazda CX-50 hybrid, which I literally drive myself.
I drive that exact car.
Wow.
Which comes standard with a suite of proactive safety features, so confidence isn't an upgrade.
It's a given.
Mazda, move and be moved.
Consumer Reports does not endorse products or services.
Is it MazdaUSA.com to learn more.
You actually do drive us in that car, actually all the time.
That's right.
Smooth drive.
Front seat, backseat, fantastic.
It's a great car.
Okay.
New category in the spirit of Bill Simmons and springing it on you without
Wow.
What is the number one enduring line or joke from this movie?
What has lasted culturally the longest?
There's a kind of a category called like the 4chan
most givable moment.
But what do you think, I don't want to do the gif.
I want to do just like, what is the quote or moment or joke
or anything that has culturally lasted the best?
If you ain't first to your last, maybe?
It doesn't make me laugh anymore,
but I think that is the quote that has lasted the longest.
I would agree.
I would say first or last, the hands thing.
I don't know to do with my hands.
I feel like everybody knows that.
Don't you put that evil on me, Ricky Bobby?
But it's got to be first.
If you're not first or last,
is now just a part of the lexicon.
Yeah.
People, everyone knows that quote,
even if they don't know where it came from.
Right.
Like a Tim Robinson meme
where it's like I haven't even watched the show.
If you're not first or last,
I'm almost like, man, that sounds like such a,
like a common quote.
I can't believe this movie came up with that.
Like, is that the first time
that has been uttered if you're not first or last?
Was that like Marcus Aurelius?
No, it was actually, no, it wasn't.
This was one of my facts.
It was actually a playoff of Vince Lombardi.
Really?
Yeah.
He basically said, I mean, in more proper English, I guess, if you're not first or your last,
it's like basically the winning is the only thing that matters.
And then Vince Lombardi said, I'm a big hairy American winning machine.
I wake up at the morning.
I'm pissed ex.
I'm the best there is.
Did you find that online or did you just remember it?
No, I found that online.
His famous quote was winning isn't everything.
It's the only thing.
And I think that it kind of turned into if you're not first or last.
Did McKay and Farrell talk about that?
Or is that something that you connected, the dots on yourself?
No, I did.
No.
I think this was like on the just random facts I found.
I don't know.
I agree.
It's if you ain't first or last.
Okay.
What is the most 2006 thing about this movie?
I had a great time putting this list together.
It was excellent.
Hyvitz, what do you got?
There's a few, but I think you have to start with the next.
Tell patch.
Like, dude, next tell.
I couldn't even remember what they did.
Cell phones?
Cell phones, but that is just such a specific era.
Yeah.
Sure.
The other one is just at the end, something I totally forgot about is the son who takes
over the team is like really trying to get Halliburton to sponsor the car.
Oh, that's why I put that down.
Halliburton references.
Halliburton was like a reviled company in that era.
It's like Dick Cheney's company.
They're just like late stage capitalism.
Is it oil?
It's like oil services.
Oil product, like oil logistics based.
I think they're doing rigs and stuff.
He's like, I'd love to get some of that stock.
Because I would love to get my hands on that stock.
And the guy just kind of nods.
That was like Adam K.
Just put that in.
And then he went and made vice 10 years later.
What else you guys got?
I got a couple here.
Making the villain a gay French guy.
I literally said,
the butt of the joke being this guy's super gay and French.
Yeah.
It's pretty 2006.
That is very.
These colors don't run.
being something they say,
that was like very much that era.
The sideburns
sole patch combination.
Several of my friends had that.
It was a really big thing.
Yeah.
Not like outlandishly,
people just did that.
Like really long sideburns.
Where'd those go?
We don't do that anymore.
Rightfully so.
I think those, I'm not sure,
most things have come back.
I don't know if the long sideburn will come back.
It's a playoff of the nextel thing.
The mention of Circuit City.
He's got more plugs in him.
in a circuit city.
Sure.
Circuit City being a thing.
When Carly says she wants to pull the plug on him?
Yeah.
He's like,
ma'am, he's just asleep.
I've never heard of make noise like that.
And he just yawned.
That's like looking up Yasmin Bleath's skirt.
Oh, yeah.
That was very good.
Yasmin Bleeth means something to people of my generation.
Baywatch?
My specific generation, yes.
Yeah.
Bill is, if he's listening to this, is like, okay,
fine.
Yeah, I mean, he was.
Had no idea who that was.
Super, super attractive.
I mean, also,
just Jean-Garard getting
having lunch with Elvis Costello and
Most Def.
Yeah, Most DeF
Redley is just there.
And it was actually them.
Yeah.
He's like, was that Elvis Costello and Most DeFes?
He's like, no.
The other one is like,
will you be my gay D. Couric?
Oh, that's, yeah.
Come on.
So what's your winner?
I think it has to be Alliburton.
No.
I mean, that's like,
the most 2006 thing.
I think it's the making the villain
a gay French guy.
I have Amy Adams being of
tiny small side character in a movie.
That's kind of, yeah.
Can I throw out one other one?
Sure.
I kind of think it's Sasha Baron Cohen in a way.
And I know that he had a career after that, but I feel like you're like, oh my God,
this is like Borat.
Borat came out three months after this.
Yeah, we'll get to that.
But I just kind of, I don't know.
You know.
What do you guys have?
So the Floyd Gundoli buttered my ass and lollipops in my mouth award for something I just
enjoy it.
I have the fake ads and commercials.
That's great.
I had fake ads and commercials.
I got 95% of us will die at some point in our lives.
The darkness is creeping towards you, whether you want it or not.
The other one I just had for things I just enjoy.
One, the sound of race cars is unbelievable.
Molly Shannon was on to something.
We'll do that later.
Let's wait.
That's like your Wayne Jenkins.
Yeah, yeah.
We're going to let him just not.
We're not doing it right now.
The other one I want to throw it is just getting into a muscle car through a window without opening the door.
You like when people do that?
Every time.
Dude, Ricky Bobby's dad does that at one point later.
I'm like, I'm pretty sure the.
doors open in this car.
It does.
It always hits.
And the last one is just champagne when race car drivers win.
Is it great.
Yeah.
I like that.
I thought about that.
The only other thing I have is Rob Riggle and David Kekner just kind of being in every comedy.
I just want them in every comedy.
Give them four lines each.
I love seeing them.
They're a floor razor.
Always great.
I agree with that.
Something I really enjoy.
Shifting gears in a car to music to aggressively pass someone.
Just feels primal.
somehow. I love when they do that.
I'm not a huge
like chasing guy, but
I'll watch people shifting gears to like
change speeds for two hours straight.
Do you like the movie Baby Driver? There's a lot of that.
Yeah. Well, it's like cell phones kind of like
they had to almost invent ways for people
to not have cell phones in a movie.
When there's all like driverless electric cars,
they're going to have to invent reasons for people to use the stick shift
still because I don't even know how to watch a scene
with a car without a stick shift. I almost put shifting gears
into the 2006 category.
Do you guys know how to drive a
Absolutely not.
Hell no.
Hell no.
No.
Well, I do.
Let's see.
Oh, and this is something that I've just noticed about a lot of movies, sports movies from that era and from other eras.
I love using real-life sports announcers in the movies about the sports and how they do voiceovers to kind of set the stage or whatever.
I just think that's really fun.
I like that.
So in this movie, I had kind of forgotten that they do that.
And they use B-roll of like real NASCAR events, which I think always helps as well.
All right, what's age the best?
I got a couple.
I think in general, the racing looks great.
The way they filmed it.
It's like big budget.
Has completely held up.
They filmed a lot of it in North Carolina.
It just looks really authentic and really good.
And the crashes look phenomenal.
It's just really high end.
You can tell that this is a comedy
that they put a lot of work into
on the production side.
It looks awesome.
I have Leslie Bibb.
We haven't really talked about a whole lot.
Her performance stands out more to me now
than it ever has.
She was perfectly cast.
Perfect.
You could not have replaced her with anybody.
Yes.
She's phenomenal in it.
And then, yeah, like her performance as a trophy wife.
Just like that...
I don't work.
I don't work.
All of that I just feel like has gotten sweeter over time.
They said that.
So apparently, because NASCAR was very...
That's good, baby.
I lack weight.
I love fun.
She's like pep talking them when they're talking shit.
It's so good.
With NASCAR, I guess, because NASCAR was very involved in the making this movie.
And I guess the head of NASCAR basically was in the test screening.
And no one would laugh until he laughed.
Like it was like, you know, like Stalin.
Russia or something. And then the wife thing where he's like, I'm a race, I'm a driver's wife.
I don't work. And he bust out laughing and then everyone else was like a lot of laugh.
Apparently that was like a big sort of inside joke inside like the NASCAR community is like there's
a lot of gold diggers. I mean, is that, I feel like across professional sports, but yeah.
A lot of gold diggers and a lot of crazy ass kids. Yeah. Is what I heard. What I read. Walker and
Walker in Texas Ranger. My beautiful sons, Walker. What do you guys have? Hi Fitz.
What's each of the best? I.
have Ricky trademarking if you ain't first
your last and literally saying to the camera, if you ain't
first your last and also that is a trademark phrase, you are
not allowed to use that, like, watching that
three weeks after Jaden Daniels said, you can't
use Mike and I else. This is what I said
to. I was like, this is incredible. I was like the
very blatant like
marketing. This movie's fucking great about
marketing. They understand it. The Appleby's commercial
during a crash. Like, fucking
great. Dude, literally the Apple
Antitizers. It's like when
someone's like in football, someone's writhing
because their leg just snapped in half and it's like two
Over-one antitizers, casidillas.
I almost couldn't believe that that had happened because we've been joking with that.
That was like four NFC championship games ago.
And it's like the new chicken finger crunch sandwich, 1999.
All right, we're back.
Oh, my way!
That's great.
So good.
The really PC track announcer somehow has, it's aged well when he's like,
ladies and gentlemen, that is a new track record as it stands now.
Jean Gerard is sitting on the pole, which is a statement of facts.
and is no way a comment on the driver's sexual orientation.
He also has a line that I missed.
He goes, the Wonderbread is toast when he crashes.
I missed that.
Oh, I didn't even notice that one.
Yeah, the Wonderbread car is toast.
The other one I had of what's aged the best is Rick saying, oh, no, nobody can live forever.
But, I mean, with modern technology and advances in science, I think I can make it.
245, 300 years old.
It's the funniest number of times.
That's like Craig's saying he can go three.
Three for five from three in an NBA game.
If I'm in a corner, corner spot.
Three for five.
Planted.
No one around me.
Easy money.
Feet set.
Famously how NBA games work.
I will say Brian Johnson is just trying to do this now.
That's right.
Well, now he's trying to dunk.
He went from I want to live forever to I love to dunk.
He's taking the bar down a little bit.
Well, I can't live to 200, so maybe I'll just try to have a 43-inch vertical.
He's realizing that if he doesn't get it in now, it's just not going to happen.
You have any more?
I had some ones that we already talked about
with like the post-race interview thing
I just think it's so good.
Big Cahuna Burger Award,
Best Use of Food or Drink.
We could go Crapes.
We could go big red gum.
We go dinner scene with all the takeout.
Laughing clown malt liquor.
This is like one of those sort of things
they don't really like mention during the show.
But he's got, his car is sponsored by Laughing Clown Malt Licker.
And then later his dad is drinking a can of Laughing Clown.
He's drinking that tall boy, that black can
the whole movie.
I think that's laughing clown malt liquor.
Always with the tall can.
The ball boy is so good.
I wanted to do the dinner scene for this,
but the truth is they don't eat
and you don't see any of the food,
so I don't know if that's a violation of this category.
It's fine.
Does 20 kilos of Colombian Bam Bam work as food to drink?
Oh.
Yeah.
The only one I want to throw out.
Don't snort these.
The part that gets me is every time
when he's like drinking the coffee during driving
and he's like, you have spilled my machiato.
Machiato.
I think it's the lucky charms.
I think that's a good call.
All right.
Cool.
Great shot.
Gordo Award.
Most cinematic shot.
There's one crane shot that is pretty cool on top of the racetrack where the cars are going.
And a crane literally swoops down over all the cars and goes into the driver's seat with Ricky.
That I thought was really impressive.
Yeah.
That's good.
I mean, I thought like the long crash where they're tumbling in slow motion.
And you can like see there's a fire happening in like the engine block and as it's spinning.
And there's also an earlier one where he's like,
oh, I'm flying through the air.
This is not good.
This is not good.
There's also just cinematography making me want to be at a NASCAR race.
There's a scene where they're kind of like introducing the race.
And I think they're doing like the start of the flag.
And then they do like a flyby with like four fighter jets.
I'm like, fuck, that might actually be really fun to go to one of these.
Have you ever been to a NASCAR event?
I haven't.
Sitting on top of an RV in like the middle of the race on a little lawn chair.
I'm like, I'll try that.
I'll do that.
I have not been to a NASCAR event.
I snuck into the Monaco
Grand Prix.
Oh, that's right.
Last year, I watched it.
Fucking James Bond.
The only person of the world who made money on it
because then I went to the Monte Carlo and I won
$25 and offset my $22 on trains.
And...
Playing what?
You won $25.
It was a great day.
But the number one thing, though, is those cars
are so fucking loud.
He won $25.
He was like, I made money on it.
Don't ask how much.
It was like $1.
It was a year of 90.
You broke even.
But you walk out, the cars are so loud, like, unbelievably loud.
And everyone's like, yeah, they're so quiet now.
But no, that's always the thing.
The NASCAR, it is an experience.
I mean, the biggest sporting event at America is the Indy 500.
Yeah.
You have, like, over 100.
I think 200,000 people go to the Indy 500.
It looks pretty fun.
Chess Rockwell, Brock Landers Award, best character name.
I don't think we try to get key with it.
I think it's Ricky Bobby.
I think we just keep it simple.
More than Walker and Texas Ranger.
Ricky Bobby is the most.
No, it's right. You're right.
I mean, it's...
Relative to, like, yeah, the Texas TR Ranger is a funny joke in the movie,
but relative to this is the name of a character of the star of the movie,
of the star of the decade, and it's in the title.
Where does Ricky Bobby rank among the best names of any characters ever had?
Good question.
Is it better...
Well, the real question is, is it a better name than Ron Burgundy?
Yeah.
Ricky Bobby.
Have you ever met anyone with last name Bobby?
You ever met anyone with the last name Burgundy?
Well, fair.
I don't know.
Ron Burgundy or Ricky Bobby?
I'm going Ricky Bobby.
I'm Ron Burgundy.
You stay classy, San Diego.
Ron Burgundy, I just laughed because I think of him as Ron Burgundy.
But Ricky Bobby is also just kind of funny on its own.
Which name do you think is more famous?
I think Ron Burb.
I don't know.
I think it's Ron Burgundy.
Yeah.
I think it has to be.
Which movie had, which one made more?
they were similar.
I think Taledega
made more.
On this note,
but it's the same title thing
you're talking about.
Anchorman is not called Anchorman.
Anchorman is the legend
colon,
the legend of Ron Bergerger.
I was going to ask you about this.
The ballad of Ricky Bob.
Do you think they had to call it
ballad because they had just done
legend of Ron Burgundy
and they're like,
what's another legend like name?
Honestly,
that's a 2006 thing
is titling movies like this.
Yeah, yeah.
It's like one word,
colon, the blank of the blank of the blank.
It's like Indiana Jones
and the Raiders of the Lost Ark,
things like that.
Wow, it's a good question, though.
It's kind of an unanswerable question.
Ricky Bobby or Ron Bergeny.
I don't know.
We should put a poll up on Instagram.
Who's more recognizable?
On the rewatchful's Instagram and how people vote.
I'm curious.
Kid Cuddy Pursuit of Happiness Award, Best Needle Drop.
I have four that I loved.
I have King of the Road to start the movie,
which is wonderful, the opening scene when he's giving birth.
Paint it Black in French.
Oh, yeah.
When Jean-Garad's taken off.
Faithfully, by Journey, when they're in the ball.
Amy Adams and Will Ferrell and they're about to get it on.
And then at the very Nt&T,
when they initiate the slingshot and Cal Nott.
Engage.
I like faithfully.
That's interesting.
I have two others.
Okay.
I mean, all those are great, first off.
Audio slave coachies early in the, I think it was like the first montage of him racing
and like starting to get great at it or whatever.
Yeah.
If you know that song, you recognize it.
It's just like a kick-ass.
like riff.
And then I didn't know who this was by,
but saliva with click,
click,
boom.
Oh yeah.
Click,
click,
boom.
That's like he's,
that's like what he's like shifting.
That's like a classic need for speed song.
That would be on every soundtrack.
Yeah.
Racing video game.
Click,
boom.
I think my takeaway from that cat,
this soundtrack was like shockingly good.
What's the final song too?
Like,
we belong to.
We belong to.
We belong to each other.
We belong.
Like that song.
is like a choice.
That one is,
I did a Westworld
bottom.
It's Pat Benatar.
I did a West World Pod and I really wanted it to be the paint it black in French.
But I actually think that song is the answer.
What,
that we belong?
Yeah,
I kind of think that is the best needlechop of the movie.
Because you have to nail that song.
It's like a perfect choice.
It is good.
Yeah.
People like the ending of this movie and this song is pretty important to the ending.
Is there a better title for this movie?
So in the research,
it says during development,
NASCAR didn't like the name.
They wanted to change it.
It was going to be high, wide, and handsome.
I was going to ask you.
This is a terrible name.
Why was that, that's not even a line in the movie.
Maybe it would have been, or maybe it was a scene that got cut.
I don't know, but that's not a good name.
Taladega Nights is, I think, I'm fantastic.
I think Taladega Nights is, you don't want to mess with that.
Was that the name or, because I think the kid who plays TR was saying that, like,
oh, all the chairs and everything on the set set.
Stop saying T.
T.R.
Texas Rangers.
Texas Ranger.
This is government name.
Texas Ranger.
I looked like.
The rise Chuck Norris wasn't in this movie.
Yeah.
Could they not get him?
Just in Dodgeball.
I don't know.
How could they not get them?
They had just done the fuck you, Chuck Norris and Dodgeball.
You can't just run back Chuck Norris.
They did, though.
Chuck Norris is a Walker and Texas Rangers.
Yeah, but he can't have him in the movie.
He was just in a movie at the end of a movie.
I think my question is, do you think that was like the project code name for the movie?
Or they actually were going to call it High Wide and Hanson?
It says they were going to call it that.
The other thing they were going to call it apparently was Red White and Racing.
That's not bad.
I like Talitigananite.
I think Talitianianianian.
I think Talitianianianian.
Tell the Dagan is, I mean, this is maybe an obvious question.
Is it a play on Days of Thunder?
Well, I don't think this movie is like a direct parody of that,
but it is parodying movies like Days of Thunder.
John C. Riley, in Days of Thunder.
Yes.
Well, I feel like that was the big thing.
I feel like that's the reason.
I might be stepping on a cat.
They're making it again. Days of Thunder Tuesday.
Was he really?
What?
They just announced it.
Oh, wow.
Tom Cruise and Ann Hathaway.
Wow.
Is he going to be Dick Tricle?
Huh?
Isn't that his name in the movie?
Tom Cruise?
one of his one of the people in that movie
let's let's look it up live on air
cold trickle cold trickle
there is a race car driving name dick trickle
there is a dick trickle there's no connection
okay dick trickle
your head was just in the gutter
dick trickle that's an all time name
all right dk yeah you have a flex category
oh yeah yeah yeah um i went with the
i used to fuck guys like you
in prison award for craziest quote.
Okay.
I look that up.
That's from Roadhouse.
That's fucking great.
Dude, that one is insane.
It's so serious.
He's like in his ear.
I used to fuck guys like you in prison.
Holy shit.
It's actually insane.
It's the crazy line in the movie.
Then he rips that guy's throat out.
Anyway, the 80s were the best.
So craziest quote, I mean, this is a comedy, so there's going to be a million funny quotes.
But like, to me, though, are we about to get it on?
Because I'm about as hard as a diamond in an ice storm right?
now is something I say all the time.
I'm not as hard as a diamond in an ice storm.
You say that all the time?
Yeah.
I do.
I love that her name is Susan.
Susan.
Susan, you might be the weirdest little girl I've ever met.
The Carly and Susan.
I could have used another scene.
You're the weirdest little girl.
I could have used another scene of Carly and Susan.
The other one that I thought was great was Gary Cole, the grandpa, talking to the kids.
He goes, shut up, you pot liquor.
I'll put you in a microwave.
I'll put you in a microwave.
I'll put you in a microwave.
That was fucking great.
Also, he had another great line late in the movie
when he is introduced to Susie for the first time,
Susan for the first time.
And he's like, I'm his lady.
We had sex.
He's like, is that right?
He's like, well, I wish I could have been there for that.
I think Reese Bobby is maybe one of my favorite characters.
Also another great name, Reese Bobby.
Reese Bobby.
All right.
Butch's girlfriend award week link of the film.
I don't typically like to do this,
but I don't, I don't, I don't have anything.
Do you?
I think if it, if it was just like a quibble,
okay.
Sasha Baron Cohen's accent
is just like too much.
Too French.
It's like,
it takes him too long to say anything.
I thought he did,
I thought he had a chance to be funnier in this movie.
If he could have just,
like, talked a little more normally.
It was like,
it felt like he was,
his whole mouth was numbed with Novakane.
It took him forever to get it out any word.
You sound like a dog with peanut butter on his mouth.
I don't know.
I just thought he could have been
funnier, honestly.
And so I thought his accent,
like the way that it kind of limited
what he could do.
He goes, like,
very deep into the character
more than he is trying to be,
like, big and broadly funny.
I am from formula.
Uh.
Yeah.
Oh.
Oh.
I don't know.
Like, the scenes where they kind of get in tight
talking with him and Ricky Bobby,
and he's like,
I just love the way that Ricky Bobby's, like,
so dismissive of.
He's like, all right.
He's like,
and next,
there is one.
And Ricky Bobby's just like, all right.
When they're like nose to nose and they're just like, I'll play for Keith.
I'll play for Keith.
Okay, what's age of the worst?
I have, this is like a half age of the worst, but there are a lot of cultural references that I have no idea what they're talking about.
Oh, yeah.
And I actually, it's tricky what's age the worst because I actually think comedies should be doing this.
I think references in the moment are good for comedies.
and I know you're trying to like play to the whole world now
so you don't want to do that as much.
But I like it.
What were some examples, you know?
In 2006, when Carly's like,
if we want a couple of wussies,
we would have named him Dr. Quinn and Medicine Woman.
I never have understood.
I have no idea what that.
Like that's a show.
It's a show from the 90s about a,
it's about a female physician from Boston
who moves to a rugged frontier town in the 1860s.
It's a funny joke, but like I have no idea what that is.
Like, Rue McClanhan from Golden Girl.
I mean, come a thing to me.
Classic.
The movie Highlander is referenced.
It won the odds.
That can be the only one.
It was shit.
It was shit.
It won the Academy Award.
For what?
Best movie ever.
Well, like, again, these are, I like when movies do this, but Katie Kirk and Diane
Sawyer, people watch now that probably don't know what that means.
Yasmin Bleath's skirt.
Love that.
I had no idea what that meant.
So it's like, it is literally age the worst because I think a lot of,
of people who watch it now have no idea what they're talking about.
But I personally like when movies do that.
I also watch the trailer for Highlander.
Have you guys seen that movie?
Yeah.
I have not.
It looks really bad.
It's like a, it's a really bad, it's a really good bad movie.
It's about an immortal Scottish swordsman who lives in modern New York City and has to fight another.
That can be only one.
I've seen that scene.
I do love, I watch the Highland movie.
It was shit.
That was D.K. about Transformers.
I watched the Transformers movie.
It was shit.
Like smoking one of those long cigarettes.
You literally say he watched Gingfin.
You were like, I don't know.
I love that they can communicate while driving.
They can just hear each other.
They're just talking to each other.
It's a shit.
The homophobic humor, obviously, was 2006 and we would never play now.
What else do you guys have?
Anything?
I had that, you know, the scene where the grandmother takes in the two kids and they're out of control
and she talks about this is Granny Law
and Granny Law just involves
hitting the kids. She like slaps
them to straighten them out. Oh interesting.
You think the soft parents of 2026
would not. Just saying it didn't age well.
Hitting kids didn't age well.
Those kids are little devil.
Those kids are dead water.
So just so we're clear, you guys are
defending hitting children.
Look, everybody has their own, whatever you want to do.
All right. Within reason. I don't know.
Within reason.
I'm just saying it aged poorly.
She gave them like one slap.
I know. It was a joke. Give me a break.
Your joke is factually correct.
I'm like, okay.
Cal talking about how Carly was unconscious every time they've had sex.
You know what?
I don't know what that meant.
I don't know why that was in there.
They need to be there.
I don't think they needed to mention them having sex.
That was very odd. I agree.
That's all I got.
I mean, the cougars named Karen.
I know that age well.
That name has aged.
Well, just that name, you know.
Down, Karen.
Karen.
Cougars just named Karen.
Is that all you got?
I don't, yeah.
No, I mean, I think you guys said it.
All right.
The Ruffalo Hannah Rubeneck Partridge Award for overacting.
It's a comedy.
It's a comedy, yeah.
Like, Molly Shannon is like fucking going for it, but I would argue it works.
But she is.
What do you represent?
She's one of the highlights of the movie.
What do you talk?
I don't remember what you're talking about.
Deika, can you remind us?
Where did I have that?
Because I want to make sure.
She was my D-on Waiters.
She just fucking goes for it.
You're getting ahead of the categories.
Yeah.
He wanted you to do the quote.
Do the goddamn fit.
I know.
I was waiting, but I'll try.
Hold on it.
Okay, so.
It's the overacting.
Yeah.
She's drunk in every scene.
Yeah.
She's belittling her husband's career choice.
He's like, this is my life.
She goes, who cares?
Who care?
He's like, I will tell you the one thing about coming to these races, the vibrations of the cars.
Ooh, I love.
I just love you.
She's like shaking.
We're in those cars.
I realize I've been saying it wrong.
It's whiz by.
Oh.
Which is great.
The field of motor.
Running up my legs.
Larry Dennett's like looking around.
The silver is watching.
I like the silver word clattering.
Fielder motor.
Okay.
Hi Fitz.
You have a flex.
So I realized that the flex categories I copied and pasted your email wrong and there's like 30 more that I realized.
Okay.
So I'm, I was like.
Oh, I thought there were more of these.
So can I, can I crowd it? Can I pool now?
Sure.
Because I was kind of like, why weren't there more of these?
I just found this out.
What did you have before that?
Before I had, I was like, well, I was going to be like a race horse name.
Okay.
But I also just only found the first seven.
And I saw that there were three more pages of flex categories.
I like how there's a whole smoking subcategories.
Oh, yeah, sure.
Of course.
There's smoking.
Should we take this opportunity while Bill's not here to just go.
through these flex categories. There's like 40. I know. I realize that. No, we're not going to go
through 40 categories. We can't skip it. No, I don't want, no, I can't skip my flex category.
I know. This is a disaster for you. No, I know it is. What are some of your favorites, Craig?
The Sean Fantasy stealth movie homage that gives you a criteria orgasm. I don't even, this probably
isn't referencing this, but there's a scene when Ricky Bodies.
signs a woman's chest, and it's exactly like Happy Gilmore when he signs the woman's chest.
And I wonder if that is referencing that movie.
That's a good one.
Yeah.
The Sean Penn, I brought my own PAC award, excellence in on-screen smoking.
That just makes me laugh as a scene.
Did you think that Jean Girard was good at smoking the little petite long cigarette?
I felt like he didn't do a great job.
Five out of ten.
It was a bad cigarette.
So that would be the Tom Cruise,
which end do I light award for terrible on-screen smoking?
That's right.
I wanted to ask the question about what exactly it's a book about medals award award was?
Yeah,
which was,
is that just like when you rewatch it,
you're like, oh, they're setting something up,
it's supposed to be a plot or it's rewarding,
or it's just a quote that's good later.
It's a quote that didn't stand out the first time you watched it,
but upon the 20th viewing,
you're like, oh, that line's actually great.
I want to give it to, is psychosomatic.
There you go.
You can start a fire with your,
with your thoughts.
Great one.
Okay.
Actually, let's take a...
Wait.
The other one I have,
the best name for a racehorse.
We talked about Ricky Bobby,
but you know it has not come up
in this episode yet.
A little bit of shake?
That's actually shocking.
Shake and bake is good.
Is that a catchphrase or epilepsy?
Shake it back.
What does that?
What does that mean?
What does it mean?
Great one.
I kind of think a horse name Shake a baby.
and bake.
How did we not say shake and bake?
I don't know.
Or the magic man.
That's fucking crazy.
It's like I'm going with El Diablo.
What's that?
It's like a fighting chicken or something.
That's awesome.
They love each other so much.
Mexican fighting chicken or something.
All right.
We'll take a break and then we'll be back with the hottest take.
When Westcham first took flight in 1996, the vibes were a bit different.
People thought denim on denim was peak fashion.
Inline skates were everywhere.
And two out of three women rocked.
The Rachel. While those things stayed in the 90s, one thing that hasn't is that fuzzy feeling you get when WestJet welcomes you on board.
Here's to WestJetting since 96.
Travel back in time with us and actually travel with us at westjet.com slash 30 years.
The CR thinks Luke Wilson could have been Harrison Ford hottest take award.
D.K., you got one?
I think we should start a NASCAR pod.
The three of us?
Yeah, why not?
Get into it.
Start now.
You just want to feel the vibration.
I want to go to a
You just want to get drunk
And watch NASCAR
And vibrate in your chair
Laughing clown malt liquor
What's a laughing clown malt liquor?
Wait, why is this a hot take?
You want to start NASCAR pot?
You just want to watch NASCAR
I'm like maybe NASCAR
You can turn it on
The hot take, there is no hot take really
I guess it's just that NASCAR is actually
Way better than I thought
Oh interesting
Yeah
Okay
You're going to start getting into it?
Have you ever watched a NASCAR race?
I have actually watched NASCAR
Back in the day
Okay
It's kind of crazy
to actually go like 500 miles
that's insane to me.
But yeah, it's kind of fun to watch.
All right.
Hyvitz, tough to follow that.
I want to watch a NASCAR race.
Am I how to take this is the funniest sports movie?
Never made.
Yes.
Like, period.
I mean, if you want to be like caddyshack, sure, but 21st, you can draw the line.
But I think we all love Happy Gilmore, but I actually think if you show someone Happy Gilmore now and they're 40, it might not be that funny.
This movie holds up.
You didn't just have to be 11 years.
years old to see this the first time. I think this is my favorite and the funniest sports
movie. Waterboy, we have Kingpin. Longest yard, Caddy Shack. We have the other Will Ferrell
movies, Blades of Glory, kicking and screaming, semi-pro. I think second is, it's locked in at second.
I would not put it above Happy Gilmore. I think it's more universally loved than Happy Gilmore,
and I think it's probably an easier sell to somebody, I think if I had to show Happy Gilmore or Talladega
to somebody who hasn't seen either,
I would be more confident
that Talladega would hit.
I think Adam Sandler is a lot like Jim Carrey
in that whatever you saw
before your brain was sealed
at like 21 years old
is forever.
But after that, it's just hard to break in.
And we're watching this,
I was just like,
this movie, every part about it
is still incredible.
Dodgeball, also there.
Yeah, yeah.
That's a good one.
My hot take is that this movie
has aged better than Anchorman.
I think it has.
I think the humor in Anchorman
It's like very that era.
It's more esoteric, yeah, and more specific to that era than Talladega nights, which I think plays way better now.
And I think Anker Man is a much more famous movie.
I think looking back on it, it's more beloved.
But to be honest, I think if I go back and I watch Talladega versus Anker Man, I am, I like Anker Man because of my memories of watching it and the humor at the time and the jokes I would make as a 12-year-old.
But I think Talladega right now is funnier than Anker Man right now, I think.
I agree with that.
I don't, but that's why it's a good take.
Like, I think a lot of Anchorman is like,
it's that like really kind of dry
Ron Burgundy, improvised sarcasm.
Real bits of Panther, like shit like that.
Yes.
60% of the time, every time.
Right.
I don't know.
I think this humor is bigger and more universal,
and I think it holds better.
I don't disagree.
I always thought I was biased
because I saw Talladega before Anchorman,
and I just feel like my friends quote Anchorman,
or Talladega Moore.
I was biased, but I do agree with that.
I think there's a chance.
If I show Anchorman to like a 20-year-old right now versus Talladega,
I think there's a better chance that Anchorman falls flatter than Talladega.
I kind of see what you're saying.
That's my hot take.
Here's a half-baked hot take that I just thought of while we were talking,
and this might not even be close to right, but I want to throw it out there.
While watching this movie, did you ever get the impression?
I kind of felt this a little bit that it felt like it was too high budget.
Like, sometimes I want my comedies to be a little bit low, low budget.
and campy and use physical comedy more than special effects and explosions and races and things
like that.
I did kind of have the thought when I was watching and I was like, this feels like too Hollywood.
Too glossy.
Yeah, this feels too big.
Interesting.
And I think sometimes comedies hit harder when they're low budget.
When it feels like friends making it in the backyard.
Right.
Which like Happy Gilmore feels a little bit more rag tag.
The only special effects in that is like the bald, like the long drives.
I mean, it's also, it's like a movie about golf versus fucking NASCAR.
Right. Right.
So I think...
This one had to be higher budget, I guess, but yes.
Because if the racing looked really bad in this movie, I don't know if it works as well.
It's good that they went to the places and filmed everything.
Yeah, I agree with that.
That was just thought I had when I was watching.
I was like, this feels very like Hollywood.
I agree.
I mean, it touches on something.
I find that we overrely on CGI to convey humor now.
Like Blockers is a great example.
It started to like, when they were doing things,
that weren't humanly possible
or that clearly looked fake
where it was like,
or I remember in neighbors,
was it neighbors too
when like Seth Rogan is sitting on the chair
and the chair explodes
and he hits the ceiling.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And it looked so fake.
Yeah.
And I'm almost like,
I'd rather you just find a different joke
that you can film practically
than use CGI
to like deliver something that feels hollow.
I was saying this the other day,
on this trip when we were in Los Angeles,
I was saying I think that the spaceship
in the beginning of Star Wars
and in Space Odyssey
looks better now than the spaceship
at the beginning of like Avengers.
Those are like miniatures that they filmed in real life
versus just on a computer.
I agree with you.
I'm trying to think of if there's, if there's,
I'm sure there are bad examples
where I'm completely wrong on that take,
but like for the most part,
I feel like when comedies feel a little bit more
just grounded in the dialogue in reality
versus like the action.
Yeah, I mean, honestly,
you can extend that beyond comedy now.
Yeah.
Everything feels like it's filmed inside of an Airbnb now
or like super CGIed and everything is touched up in the background.
Everything's like really bright.
Nothing feels as lived in anymore.
A lot of the streaming movies just like don't look real.
And I think it's why I love movies and TV shows from the 90s and early 2000s
because it's like...
Yeah.
And I watch super bad.
I'm like, I feel like I'm there at a normal high school.
And this looks like how it would look.
And now if you filmed a high school movie...
Yeah.
It would just like look too shiny and not real.
Yeah.
So I do agree with you.
Casting What Ifs.
A couple good ones.
For Cal Noton, it was not supposed to be John.
C. Riley, who, like, you mentioned this earlier, I did not know this. John C. Riley was the originally
supposed to be Brick Tamlin from Anchorman? Oh, was he? Yes, and he couldn't do it because of scheduling.
He would have made it probably a funny brick. I think he would, yeah. It's crazy to think Steve,
it's weird to think of anyone other than Steve Gryl doing it, but John C. Riley. What was the, what was
the internet character that John C. Riley played where he was the doctor? He's like, for your health,
and he was always drunk on wine and stuff. Do you know what I'm talking about? And there's,
There was like a whole series about it.
I want to say it was, I can't remember where it was based.
Like a Tim and Eric maybe.
I think it was Tim and Eric.
Yeah.
Yeah, that's a good call.
But that blew my mind.
I mean, I kind of can't, it can't not be Steve Correll now in the brick role.
Right.
But even the funniest brick lines are actually like, brick killed the guy with the Trident.
Will Ferrell saying that.
Yeah.
You know what I mean?
Like the other than I love Lamp, like the actual funniest things of a brick.
I love Lamp.
Yeah.
Up for the role of Cal Noton.
Jack Black, Billy Crystal and Dennis Quaid?
That feels weird to me.
Dennis Quaid and Billy Crystal, I would like to say no to.
Jack Black, I could see.
Jack Black, I think, would have been funny in it.
I think he's too silly and big.
John C. Riley's really good at letting Will Ferrell be the winner.
I mean, literally, like, what Cal Notton is good at doing,
John C. Riley is good at.
Right, right. It's meta.
Jack Black, I think, would steal too much thunder.
Yeah.
But you're my best friend. I love you.
What?
Nothing!
Yeah.
But Jack Buck, I get it.
I understand why that was being considered.
Yeah.
And then for Jean Girard, Michael J. Fox, Seth Green and John Stamos.
John Stamos?
Yeah.
2006, John Stamos.
Seth Green?
Seth Green is a disaster.
I don't know.
That one would have been very odd.
Michael J. Fox also feels very weird.
John Stamos, I could kind of see.
Yeah, I can see that too.
Yeah.
The good-looking, slick back hair, the French, you know, thing.
I feel like that would play.
Yeah.
I assume they knew Borat was happening
when they decided to cast them in this.
It's a good question.
I don't know.
Because I don't know how long it took to film.
I mean,
I imagine this took much longer to film than Borat.
Borat came out three months after this movie.
He was doing Borat bits for a long time before.
I was going to say Borat had to have taken longer than this.
He had a whole show.
He had the LAG show.
Yeah.
So he'd been doing the Borat thing for a while before the movie came out.
So people knew about it.
Yeah, but he was more of like a,
like a show is popular in the UK more.
Yeah,
he was like a cult thing.
like an up-and-coming comic at that point, right?
Yeah, yeah.
David Caruso stuff of,
I'm doing my own flex category,
which Bill never does,
but I'm taking over.
The David Caruso Stuff of Legends Award
for the character who definitely should have been
spun off into their own sequel,
Reese Bobby could have a whole damn movie around him.
Dude, the backstory with Reese Bobby
where he's like mixed up with the Colombian cartel
and doing what, God knows what,
he's like running drugs over the border in a car or something.
Yeah, he's just,
drug running, he's doing street racing, he's like knocking
women up. I want to know how many kids.
He's like 12 kids. Can we get it in like a real serious
prestige TV style though where it's not funny? It's just him
doing serious shit. Yeah. Like I would love that if he had like
12 children, I want him like going to each one and trying to
ingratiate himself into their family.
I love, I love when Ricky first goes to see him or when he delivers
the pizza when Reese keeps ordering pizzas so he delivers it and he goes,
close the door. I close the door and come in. I got weed in here,
Cowboy.
He punches him in the face. He's like, son.
Did this go well?
The first thing he says is, how long has it been?
Three, four months?
Ten years.
Ten years?
I got to lay off the peyote.
Payote.
Come in here and close the door.
I got weed in here, a cowboy.
At the end of the movie, he's like, I'm starting to get a little itchy.
I'm starting to get a little itchy.
The Applebee's waiter?
He's so mean to her.
I said no onions.
I think you did that on purpose.
Okay, the Joy Pants Award.
Best that guy.
This will be interesting.
because typically I have differing opinions than the host of the show.
That is my...
True quibble with this podcast is just...
I try to fight for it.
The standard is insane of like knowing people's names.
Ridiculously high bar.
I kind of think for regular people watch movies,
the ultimate that guy is actually Gary Cole,
where it's like he's the guy in Veep
and also he's Ricky Bobby's dad.
And most people don't know his name Gary Cole.
But I know that that somewhere...
He was in...
He was in a bunch of stuff.
What else is he was in?
He was in a bunch of stuff.
But if you went like...
He was Lumberg and fucking office space.
I think...
Shit, Lumberg fucked her.
I think beginner level, it's Gary Cole.
Yeah.
Okay.
I think if you want to go expert level to me, it's Ted Manson as Chip.
Oh.
I do not know that guy's name.
But if I see that guy, I go, oh, that guy from TalaDegra.
Grandpa from Taleda Nights.
Yes.
I don't think anyone knows his name.
And then the middle level is the guy who's on the race crew that's also in forgetting
Sarah Marshall.
David Kekner?
He's the one that gets all
squirrelly when the jazz music comes on.
No, not David Kekner.
I went with Ian Roberts,
who is the getter a coffin mine.
Sure.
Which is like just so random.
He is, by the way,
the literal doctor from arrested development.
Oh, right.
That guy.
That is the great call.
He's going to be all right.
Ah, I hate this dog.
I kill this doctor.
It looks like he looks like,
It looks like he's dead.
That is a great call.
I'm sure Bill,
Chris and Sean will be mad at the Gary Cole selection.
Yes.
Well, I'm sorry.
I know he's Gary Cole, but I do think...
No one's like, that guy?
Oh, obviously, Gary Cole.
Jack McReyer, who's, I think he's also in 30 Rock,
but I'm like, do people know that guy's name?
Kenneth from 30 Rock?
Yeah, exactly.
I would argue that Larry Dennett, the guy who plays the son,
that guy's a guy.
Yeah.
His name's Greg German.
I'm sure people would be like, no, of course.
To me, that's that guy.
Anyway, all right, this is the most important.
category of the show because this is a real like five-headed race. Deionne Waiters Award.
We have Molly Shannon, who is in like two or three scenes, crushes every single one of them.
She's always drunk.
She's like tenderly touching the guy from Halliburton's face.
I love.
Gives him a kiss on the mouth.
I love right before that, right before that, when she's like, you won't let me see you naked to her husband.
And just under his breath right before the executives walk in, he goes, it's not a fear thing.
It's a trust thing.
It's so good
You're afraid of letting me see you naked
It's not a fear thing
It's a trust thing
I think Amy Adams
Definitely qualifies
Oh yeah
Do not think she's in the movie that much
And she says
The speeches
The speech is iconic
Yeah
Grandpa Chip
In the mix here
What was the line he said
I'd forgotten he made this line
It was like
The mouse is fast
But the owl can see at night
And then he like
laughs at him
I can't remember what the exact
The field mouse is fast
I don't think Gary Cole
qualifies.
This was going to be my question.
I think Reeve Bobby is in it too much.
Here's my thing with him.
I forgot
until prepping for the show
that he comes...
It's weird. He starts the game
which maybe is bad for the Dion Waders Award.
But he starts the game on a 12-0 run.
The first 15 jokes of this movie
are just Gary Cole.
Literally, he does...
Maybe it's too much for Deon Waiters,
but Gary Cole comes in and says,
10 years, I got to lay off the peyote.
No smoking here.
He's like, don't worry, darling, I'm a volunteer fireman
in front of the five-year-olds.
He's like, I'm a semi-professional race car driver
and an amateur tattoo artist.
Fastest who gets paid and the fastest who gets laid.
And if you ain't first, you're last.
That's the first four minutes of the movie.
All of that is in the same scene,
and then he leaves for an hour.
I also love that he's, every time he gets kicked out of places,
he's always resisting.
We were so made scary.
I'm a veteran.
I'm a diabetic.
He's just screaming out of the...
I'm a veteran.
He's getting kicked out of the elementary.
And then he gets the car.
He puts his two feet up in the door jam.
It's always the two feet pinned against the door.
Then he pulls away.
He's like, see it when you're growing up.
But then he's gone for like a full hour.
I think it's too much.
I think he's too important of a character.
It's like in the godfather.
You know, Vito Corleone is not in the movie that much,
but he can't be DIYators.
If we're calling Reese the godfather of Tal degenites, then I'll take that.
I'm just saying runtime, you might be right, but I think he's too important of a role.
So I would also give you Michael Clark Duncan, rest in peace, who is awesome in this movie.
Our sponsors will shit a chicken.
That's great.
And then really many one, I did not know this until doing the research.
The original driver for Dennett Racing at the start of the movie, Terry Chavot, is Adam McKay.
Yeah, yeah, I was going to bring that up.
know that. He's like, hold on, I got to take a piss.
I think he is so funny. I was going to be like,
who is this guy? He goes.
It doesn't matter, Lucius. We're in last place.
Relax. Jeez. I got to take a wig.
Get off my ass.
That is so fucking funny.
You go and check. These burgers are really good.
He goes, I'm going to make a phone call.
Let me eat this. Then I got to make a phone call.
And then I'll be back.
I mean like, I got to make a phone call.
During a race, I think he crushes it.
And is the definition of, like, one scene.
Yeah.
But what?
Do you think it's Molly Shannon?
I think it's Molly Shannon.
Okay.
She's fucking great.
I agree.
Molly Shannon.
All right.
Recasting Couch director of City.
I don't have anything.
I would not recast the director.
I would not recast any of the actors, I don't think.
Maybe small stuff.
And then the city, it's like, this is mostly filmed in North Carolina and they're on actual racetracks.
I don't have a ton here.
Christopher Nolan apparently loves this movie.
He does.
He just said that.
So remake?
That's interesting.
Like a remake where you can.
hear anything?
Like, reboot it into a very serious...
So you know how the old Batman movies
were like campy and whatever?
He dark nights.
And then he dark knighted it.
Dark Night Talladega Knights.
He should do Days of Thunder 2.
Taladayga Dark Night.
There we go.
I think that would be fun.
Dave of Thunder 2
directed by Christopher Nolan starring Tom Cruise.
That would do a way.
Sign me up.
I don't...
I agree like the cast is kind of perfect.
I would like to see Tim Robinson do something like this,
but that...
The only person that I felt like could go...
And Sam Richardson.
He'd maybe be Cal.
Yeah.
The only person that I was, like, watching this movie and was like, could they go toe to toe
to toe with Will Ferrell's?
Or it's like, I kind of was wondering if Danny McBride could try either role.
Yeah.
But I don't really want to change it.
I feel like he was like so from that era, though, that it doesn't, it's like too close.
You could have swapped Danny McBride maybe for John C. Riley, but I don't.
I don't need to change.
I think everyone's kind of crushing it.
Half-ass internet research.
We talked about a few things.
Shot in North Carolina mostly.
They got a lot of real-life tidbits from NASCAR drivers and commentators, some of
which are in the movie, like Earnhardt's in the movie.
I mentioned that John C. Riley was in both Days of Thunder and this movie.
Sony did not actually charge...
Sony, the studio that made the movie,
did not charge brands like Wonderbread, Old Spice,
or Perrier to feature their products in the movie.
What?
Yeah.
Okay, so that was going to be my unanswerable question is how much did they pay?
And you're telling me that they paid nothing.
Didn't charge.
How does that work?
I actually don't know.
And I don't think that would be the case today.
What do you mean that they just put...
Because here's why that's funny to me.
Wonderbread's in every fucking scene in this movie.
There are times where there are 12 logos at the same time
and Wonderbread and they just got that for free.
Yeah, and then the brands promoted it, apparently.
Which obviously I get, but yeah.
That's shocking.
A special time.
I don't know.
Things were different, no six.
I guess.
I don't even know.
It's not like it was 1974.
So Budweiser is just everywhere and they're not paying a dollar for that.
Yeah.
All right.
That shocks me.
Okay.
All right, so stepping on it, but on that?
One of my probably unanswerable questions was,
is this the most product placement ever in a movie?
Ooh.
That's a good question.
I mean,
NASCAR, part of NASCAR is branding.
It's all sponsorships.
It's all sponsorships.
All the teams are sponsored.
I think the answer is probably yes.
You know, it's hard to make those claims.
I mean, there's the, there's the Wayne's World joke about all the sponsor.
The Wayne's World joke is kind of condensed to one scene, really.
But this movie, it's ever present.
I'm just shocked that it was free.
I guess they felt that they would have to, like, give up creative control for that much brand.
I just, I don't know, I just assume.
You guys have any other half-ass internet research?
The Will Ferrell's dad played sax and keyboards with the righteous brothers for like 20 years.
And his song is, he has a song that's in this movie.
Very cool.
His name is Roy Lee Farrell, which is a great name.
Kind of like a, it feels like it's made up for this movie.
The other thing that I thought was funny is there was an ESPN article from 2016.
and Ryan McGee, and he talked about how Will Ferrell and all the guys from the movie got, like, a test drive on the track to start out.
And they were going, like, 70 or something, like, not very fast relative to what these guys are doing.
And they were, like, terrified.
And then when they did the scene where Will Ferrell's trying to come back, he's going, like, 26 miles an hour.
He was like, that was, like, kind of an homage to that, like, the experience.
He said it was, like, literally what happened?
Yeah.
The cars with the other.
They were like a fan.
Went those the other cars.
What was that?
Oh, what was that?
But no, apparently what happened?
So they booked this place.
I forget if it was Talade.
Or probably Charlotte Speedway.
And it was like Richard Dent Training Academy.
And they took him there and they had that booked for three hours.
And then John and then Will Ferrell did a run for 60 seconds and came back and was silent and
white as it goes.
Do you know how hard is get Will Ferrell to say nothing?
And then John C. Riley got in the car for 60 seconds and they came back and he said
nothing.
And they're like, we're going to go.
and they left.
And Adam McKay is like,
we have two hours and 53 minutes left here.
And they like got to the car.
And John C. Riley was like,
we can't beat pussies.
Like we literally,
during a race car movie,
we have to drive a race car.
And then they're like begrudgingly went back.
But they wanted to leave.
NASCAR is a sport,
I would say,
I'm the least interested in participating in.
Sure.
If somebody was like,
you want to hop in a fucking race car,
I'd be like,
I think I'm good.
I don't want to do that.
Yeah.
Any other research?
The other one that I thought was funny
when I saw this was,
Gary Cole and Jane Lynch, who are Ricky Bobby's parents in the movies, in the movie.
They are 11 and 7 years older than Will Ferrell in real life, which I love.
Also, this is super random.
I just forgot to talk about it earlier, but the line where Jane Lynch is recounting his conception,
and he's like, it was like in some Texas roadhouse bathroom.
Russell's Steakhouse Ladies' Room.
He chose me.
He chose me.
Will Ferrell goes, a ladies' room?
I just thought that was such a good life.
A lady's room.
Jane Lynch, we didn't talk about her a lot, but she's awesome.
She's always good.
She's always like Jane Lynch.
She's fantastic in this movie.
But even little things that you talk,
they're talking about lines that you like forget,
and then you were watching later.
It's like the literal second scene,
like the baby's born,
and she said, I'm going to go getting some milk and cry.
I'll be right back.
The other half-incident research is the gray scene,
the dinner scene took a whole day.
And apparently Wilfair was feeding lines to the kids.
and multiple shots were ruined
and obviously the camera operator
I assume is not always calling cut
the camera operator had to say cut
because he was laughing so hard
he was shaking the camera because he couldn't contain
himself. The kids are really good
they got really lucky because you never know
with kid actors and both of them nail it.
There's the I love the McKay style
I know we kind of talked about this
but like where they're doing like just like
10 cuts 20 cuts like right in a row
just like feeding them lines and stuff
there's a famous blooper reel from Anchorman
where they're talking about Will Ferrell and Paul Rudd are talking about what breast implants are made out of,
and they're like just riffing and whatever.
And then in the background, so they're like, yeah, it's apparently made from like cottage cheese or whatever.
They say a few different things.
And then he's like, you can see Paul Rudd's trying to think of something.
In the background, you can just hear Adam McKay go, Nichols.
And then they're like trying to get through the scene by saying Nichols.
And it's just like, I'm like, that is being on the set.
That group of people would have been like
like Michelangelo painting or whatever.
That should be the hottest take is they should,
fuck the Zach Snyder cut.
There should be McKay cuts.
Like,
would you not want to watch like this seven hour cuts of all these movies?
Especially now.
Yeah,
it's been 20 years later.
Yeah.
I mean,
another mini hot take is sometimes I like watching the bloopers just as much as I do.
Oh,
100%.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah.
Do you ever in a bad mood,
just put on bloopers from Anchorman or whatever.
I think Bill's talked about this before,
but like there needs to be a 2B channel that's just bloopers.
I'd watch that.
Yeah.
100%.
The amount of times I'll just like Google the office bloopers
or always sunny bloopers or something.
It's amazing.
The darkness is creeping toward you.
Whether you know it or not.
Body's so good, you're going to want to talk to it.
Oh, God.
There's just so many quotes.
Real simple, son.
Also, Colombian bam-bang.
There's a kilo of Colombian bam-bam under the car.
Time to be a man.
Apex Mountain.
Will Ferrell.
It's right around here.
It's close.
Yes, right?
Well, I think stepbrothers.
I think you could argue it could be elf,
was just after S&L and elf was massive.
And then it was like, okay, well, Farrell's now.
But this movie was huge.
Stepbrother was huge.
It's like 04 to 08.
Right.
It's hard to say exactly whether it's like this,
stepbrothers or elf.
Do you think this movie is bigger than stepbrothers?
Like from a, not necessarily like how much money it made,
but just from a cultural where it stands.
I do.
Okay.
Oh, interesting.
I'm not sure.
I think Tal'Dag is bigger
than Stap Brothers,
culturally.
But Elf, I think,
is the biggest movie
he's...
Like, commercially?
Yes.
But coming off...
I just...
I don't know.
I mean, this movie,
I guess Elf made more money.
I don't know.
I'm not going to sit here
and pretend to know
exactly what Apex Mountain works,
but I just feel like off this,
the whole point is,
Will Ferrell...
Again, they literally pitched this
on six lines,
on six words.
Will Ferrell drives a NASCAR,
is a NASCAR racer.
Isn't that, like,
the premise of Apex
Mountain is... He had so much juice there just like...
Done.
Blank check.
Isn't that like the hypothetical question Bill always asked?
And like, that's the literal story of this movie.
That's pretty...
It's pretty good.
Yeah. But you could argue he can only do that because of what he did before.
But yeah.
Like, you know what I mean?
So this movie is because of his Apex Mountain.
He gets this movie.
Kind of.
Fucking A.
So, God, do it.
Well, because this is coming off of Anchorman.
And then he's like...
But then this made a lot of money.
He doesn't make a lot of money.
He doesn't this make more money than Apexman.
Anchorman at the box office? It did. I also assumed that this had made a ton of money on the sponsors,
and I guess that throws me off, because I assumed the box office was way under accounting. I assumed
that there was like 50 million more dollars from Wonder Bread and Budweiser and all these other sponsors.
It's hard to tell. He comes out of S&L. He does old school elf and Anker Man. And so you could argue
it's right then it's right then I guess he does Tal Daganites and then two years later he does
stepbrothers. Maybe it is Tal Degganites. The point is the two-year window is probably right here.
John C. Riley? I would say yes
Because I believe this movie Greenlit him getting his own star role in a movie, which is Walk Hart.
And he never really had that again. And although he's had a great career, he's done amazing good movies.
Buggy Nights, he's been in a bunch of stuff. But doing this and then getting your own lead comedy role, I think it's got to be now.
Yeah, I can see that.
NASCAR movies? This came out the same year as cars.
Right.
You could argue 2006 was the apex for NASCAR.
Oh, easily.
I was just going to say NASCAR.
I don't think we're qualified to answer that, but I do think the NASCAR movies is true.
I think I read that this is like, who knows, and I'm not a close follower of NASCAR.
I don't know where it is like right now, but I read that viewership peaked in 2006 of NASCAR.
It was number two to the NFL in terms of live watching at that time, number two to the NFL.
Wow.
And I don't think it's,
I don't think that it's at that point anymore.
And then we got F1 kind of coming in and stealing some of its thunder.
It's a lot like primarily coming in and people are gravitating toward that.
But I do think NASCAR,
and maybe NASCAR the viewership,
but NASCAR movies for sure,
because the other reason,
the other thing that stands out on a rewatch is how few drivers are in the movie.
You have Dale Earnhardt,
Dale Earnhardt, Jr. for literally about five seconds,
maybe 10?
Like, it was a meta moment.
Don't tell the other driver.
Yeah.
But like that was, it was very real because they're,
NASCAR was kind of a risk for them to allow this because they were very much like,
are you making fun of us?
Are we in on the joke?
Are you laughing at us or with us?
And it worked.
But I feel like everyone was, all the drivers basically were like, we don't want to be part of this.
We're afraid we'll be like making fun of sport.
That might have been why they didn't have sponsors that paid is because I think a lot of the sponsors for the real cars were concerned.
Yeah.
That it was going to be bad for their image or whatever.
Yeah, I think back in the day it felt like sports leagues were more open to letting their likeness be involved.
Now, you don't see it as much, but like, you know, you watch Ace Ventura, the dolphins are like, sure.
Yeah.
The NFL today would never.
No.
Yeah.
It doesn't happen as much now.
Amy Adams, no.
Sasha Baron Cohen, I mean, it has to be.
It's three months later.
It has to be a big fan.
It's literally three months later for Borat.
It's probably after Borat comes out, but this year for sure.
Yeah.
That, I mean, I mean, Talladega and Borat in the same four-month period is pretty crazy.
It's crazy.
It's crazy.
The, so I was.
I was going to say Shake and Bake.
Codd be Apex Mountain for ShakingBake.
I thought about that.
Are you talking about the product?
Well, I looked it up.
Apparently, ShakenBank has exploded in the last, like, 10 years.
Really?
You're trying to tell me the Shaking Bighton.
I wrote down ShakenBake, but then I was trying to figure out, like,
just sales by year, and apparently it's just gone up a lot in the last, like, 10 years.
No, it's got to be Tal-Daganites.
I'm open to that.
It's one of the most iconic phrases of a really popular movie.
It's not now.
Have you ever eaten
Shake and bake?
No.
Chicken or whatever?
I don't think so.
What?
I'm not like, I'm just saying I looked it up.
If you smell a nice, crispy,
delicious smell after this podcast,
is not your tailpipes.
A little bit of shape.
I love it does the oven and bake.
Put it in the oven.
You can open the oven.
A little bit of shake.
And bag.
And bang.
Sideburns in movies?
Yes or no?
No.
The American.
has to be gangs in New York
Billy the butcher. He had that on.
That's the best sideburn of all time.
04?
Yeah, it was 04.
Listen to you meatheaded shit sack.
Don't give a fuck about your moral conundrum.
I don't know. This is...
Wow, okay.
This is a girl.
Come on.
I don't know. These sideburns...
Everyone's got sideburns in this movie.
There was a lot of sideburns.
It was a real thing that was people were doing.
Syburns were a thing.
Jack McBrayer. I'm saying yes.
This is the first year of
30 Rock and he became Kenneth
from 30 Rock. Two years later he's
in forgetting Sir Marshall and 30 Rock's still going. You could argue
it's then. Right around now.
Gary Cole
had a great run in Veep. He's done a lot.
Hard to kind of pick what that would be.
Jane Lynch did Glee.
Yeah. And role models?
Yeah. I forget when that was. I'd probably say Glee for Jane
Lund. I think it has to be. You got any others?
No, I just wanted to make sure
We just acknowledged how fucking big
Sasha Barron Cohen was.
Sure.
In 2006.
Cruiser, Hanks, as Ricky Bobby.
It's got to be Tom Hanks.
Tom Cruise did the NASCAR movie.
It's got to be Hanks.
I agree.
I just don't think it would be funny with Tom Cruise.
I don't think Tom Cruise is the right fit.
Hank's I could actually see doing the Southern
He has the accent.
Over the top, like American race car driver thing.
Like Forest Gump adjacent.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Course Gump later in life becomes a NASCAR driver.
But he's driving the little fucking lawnmower,
but actually just wants to go fast.
With that said, if Cruz did it, he would actually drive the car.
And you could probably get some insane shots of him, like,
actually racing up like Dale Earnhardt.
But it's got to be Hank sitting.
Picking Nitz.
Look, this is a comedy about a race car driver.
Sure.
Hard to get too specific here with quibbles.
The only thing that I think about is like when Ricky is down on his luck
and is out of NASCAR and he's not, isn't he still incredibly rich?
Where's all his money?
Cal took it.
Why does he have to go deliver pizza?
They literally said the number 21.6 million dollars.
This year, he made $21 million that year.
I think Carly was embezzling it.
It was all under her name.
He had no money.
I love that.
I think Cal and Carly embezzled all of his money.
He took his house, took his wife, and his money.
Yeah.
You're ruining my life.
I just love that he has, he has to go like living his
mom's basement and deliver pizza three months after being the most famous driver in the world.
I love that one.
Could I do a commercial?
Never thought of that.
That's funny.
The other, yeah, I'm not going to, I feel like you're not going to overthink things like
the cougar in the car.
Those are bits.
A cougar would kill you.
It would probably kill you.
There's also no cougars in North Carolina.
Well, we didn't say where he trapped it from.
He did, that's true.
He did just say he trapped it.
Been feeding it an old pizza.
Maybe he trapped it in somewhere else.
I love when Ricky comes back home after his long day.
He's like, got mulled by a cougar.
Ruin my shirt.
Got mold by a cougar.
The only knit I'll have that actually as I watch it, I'm like, bothers me,
is the opening part with the owner, the dad.
They're like, I love Ricky Bobby.
And then they just transition in the son's running the team.
And they never actually acknowledged that the dad was gone.
Yeah.
And they never just, like, he's just running the team.
But I had to look at that.
I was like, I was like, why?
I assumed he dies.
But he apparently he doesn't.
He's not dead.
Like in the lore of the movie?
I don't know, but I don't think he dies.
It was like probably one scene that they just took out.
Yes.
There was a continuity thing and it just, they just were like, it's fine.
They needed like the rich spoiled son to take over.
I just assumed that there was a scene they cut where he dies.
I also thought it was kind of like a, this is a nitpick.
It's like they, the reason Dennett Jr. moves on from Ricky is because he refuses to win the points title.
It's like, it's a huge net.
It's like, okay.
It's the only other big one I had.
I'm like, Ricky's winning every race.
Yeah.
He, like, flipped a guy off and lost some points or whatever.
Scottie Shephler's the Grand Slam and he's like all not going to win the FedEx title.
Ricky's also a huge dick to him.
Yeah, I do understand that a little bit, but it's like, okay.
Well, the only other thing with it is, this is not a knit, but it's just upon rewatching it 100 times.
I'm like, I kind of forget sometimes that the race, it's not really for anything.
And Talladega doesn't have a ton to do with this movie other than just being the ending.
And it's a good name.
And it's a great name.
And it's kind of like the joke in Seinfeld where they make the, it has to be titleist for
Kramer hitting the golf ball.
It has to be that.
I'm like, Taladega, to my knowledge,
and NASCAR doesn't necessarily
like the most important race.
Yeah.
You know what I mean?
And I don't think I ever thought about that.
Like, called Talladega Knights.
And I'm like, it's kind of just the next race
after he has a mental breakdown.
It's more personal stakes than it is actual professional stakes.
Yeah, there's zero.
Yes.
Okay, sequel, prequel, prestige TV,
all black cast are untouchable.
This one 100% could have been a sequel.
And I'm glad it's not,
but they could have totally done it.
They thought about it.
McKay said they had an idea
where Ricky Bobby goes to Europe to do Formula One.
I was going to say.
And it's like, Ricky Bobby in Europe, that's funny.
But.
I think that still might happen solely because now they would get all the sponsors
and they would get to pay,
kind of like Happy Gilmore 2,
like all the people you could get involved,
the drivers, Michael Jordan would probably do a NASCAR cameo
or you get Formula 1.
A lot of people more brands would pay to be in that.
Yeah.
McKay and Farrell,
I don't know if they would do that together.
Oh, that's true.
Yeah.
Farrell hasn't done a ton of like true sequels.
They did Anchorman too.
Zoolander 2 happened.
Nipples.
Daddy's home too.
I'm glad that Farrell and McKay have not really together ever made a sequel
other than Anchorman 2.
Because it just, it just never, it usually doesn't work.
There are certain types of comedies like the Austin Power parody movie spoofs
you can do more of like naked guns.
Like comedy is about, like, you know, subverting expectation.
You can't do it twice.
When you know who Ricky Bobby is, it's just, it's not going to be the same.
Yeah.
So I would say untouchable.
Is this movie better with Wayne Jenkins?
Fergie the floor is Zane Lowe, Robert Evans, Dr. Charles Nichols, Ted Levine, or somebody else.
God damn, Ricky!
I don't know I was working with the blow!
I was just going to throw in Tom Brady because I was like, I can't, what am I going to do Zane Lowe?
I'm not going to do Zane Lowe and disrespect C.R. like that.
Like you just did.
I'm trying to, it's an homage.
I know I'm not, Chris Ryan, but I just wanted him to be with us here in spirit.
No, it's good.
Bernthal's aware of this show.
He was asked about it.
He knows that CR does Wayne Jenkins, which is incredible.
I was just thinking what if Tom Brady was doing the...
Play-by-play?
The play-by-play?
He's like, we got a lot of juice here for Team Dennett racing, KB.
We are watching some high-level driving out there on the track today.
Great stuff, K-B.
K-B. It seems like he's going backward, K-B.
I love a competitor who I love that he's just, he's never giving up, KB.
He's not on fire, KB.
He looks to be on fire, but he's not.
It's all mental.
It's in his head.
Just one Oscar, who gets it?
It's Will Farrell.
So I admittedly, I'm not Chris Ryan with the impressions and I'm not shown fantasy with the Oscars, but I had to ask you a question.
Okay.
So this year, so this is August 2006.
Yeah, so it'll be 07 Oscars.
Was Mark Wahlberg was nominated for the Departed.
Okay.
As a supporting actor at the Oscars.
Is he actually better in the Departed than John C. Riley is in Talladega Night?
I know comedy that doesn't happen.
That's the quote, of course not.
There's probably, you can pick three comedies every year where somebody is putting on an incredible.
performance. They rarely
nominate comedies.
I know there's like five spots and they should do more, but I just
also, I mean... But if you had to give an Oscar,
you would give it to John C. Rely at this movie, not Will Ferrell?
Well, is the rule give him an Oscar
in this movie or is the rule you have to
pull the Oscar from that year? No, you are the Academy and you can give an
Oscar to whoever you want. It can be the script, it can be cinematography,
it can be an actor. I mean, the lame answer
is the sound is actually shockingly good.
The NASCAR, I know that's fucking lame, but...
You're overthinking it. The sound, you're going to give it to the
Sound over Will Ferrell?
Well, so you're saying I don't, I have to, because who won the best actor that year?
It doesn't matter.
Don't, don't, the Oscars don't.
If you can give one Oscar to anyone in this movie or anything.
And it's Will Ferrell.
Okay.
I thought you're asking me to pull the, like, the Oscar away from Forrest Whitaker,
the last king of Scotland.
I'm like, okay.
You think you deserve that?
I actually, I mean, it's a mean, come on, man.
It's a good role.
Probably unanswerable questions.
So kind of what happens with Cal and Carley now?
I know.
I was wondering about that.
Carly kind of slips away as this movie ends.
They kind of just like don't, because like what's going to happen.
I'm assuming she would leave Cal for a different driver.
Yes.
Is that what happens?
I imagine so.
But Cal won and he still has his sponsors in theory.
Oh, that's a good question.
But now Cal and Ricky are friends again.
I think they just go back and they just kind of get over it.
But Ricky's got a new girl.
You know, they had sex.
Oh, that's true.
Did you now?
I wish I was there for that.
I wish I was there for that.
That's like an insight.
That's like I always say that shit with.
my friends.
Ooh,
I wish I'd have been there for that.
Well,
because I feel like the whole movie,
there's this subtle hint that,
like Cal kind of being into the two of them.
I feel like Cal and he's like,
I'll hold her hair.
Yeah.
And when they're making out,
he's kind of into it,
you know?
Yeah,
yeah, yeah.
So what?
Carly's just out of picture.
I like to think they stay together.
I think they could be a thruffle.
I feel like Cal would want to stay together.
Yeah,
100%.
Would Ricky allow Cal to date?
Yeah.
Yeah, because he's sorry for,
he felt bad for making him get second the whole time.
This should have been my flex category, which is the Dennis Peck relationship test.
Okay.
But it really will Cal Norton test this relationship?
But no, I actually think they could be a thruple and be totally fine.
What about Susan?
Oh, fuck.
A thruple?
I feel like he should just be with, maybe they could just be like, I think Cal stays with his wife and then Susan.
They still live in the house.
It's still haunted.
It's all fine.
That's the spinoff I want to see, by the way, the horror movie.
It's just about the haunted house.
Get out!
I think Carly's dating Dale Earnhardt in a month.
Oh, yeah, probably.
Jeff Gordon.
All right.
My next unanswerable is, does the slingshot actually work?
I was going to ask that, too.
Is that real?
A hundred percent.
This is the entire tour to France.
It's like you're just drafting off of them and then you go around.
I don't understand how that makes sense.
This is how geese fly.
It's like you're breaking up the air.
Oh, it's how geese fly.
Why don't you to say that?
Obviously.
I don't know how geese fly.
But in a V famously.
Yeah.
But it's because the most effort is the person at the crook of the V.
I understand that the person in the front is taking the most wind.
Right.
And the person behind is not receiving any wind.
But the second they go outside, doesn't the wind just hit them immediately?
Wouldn't that slow?
I don't get it.
I think there's a brief vacuum of air that happens for a set amount of time.
Your velocity can keep up despite moving into the tunnel of wind.
Famously, I'm a scientist, but think about a boat.
Think about a water for a second.
And your boat.
We're really having him explain.
And like that, but that's happening in the air.
Yeah.
But if you're behind, if you're in the wake, behind the boat, I get it.
But the second you leave the wake and you're,
now just like everybody else,
why does it shoot you so fast?
And does this happen in NASCAR all the time?
I don't know.
I mean, this was happening in need for speed, so I assume.
Let's ask someone who knows about physics, not high fits.
I mean, tour to France, this definitely happens.
My question is why don't they do this in horse racing?
Why do they're no teammate teams horses?
Why can't horses work together?
I mean, maybe, you know, two running backs,
one should just run behind the other.
Oh, like a fullback?
Fullback for the air.
You know what I mean?
Like maybe DeAndre Swift should be behind,
Kyle Minnongai.
A push push.
Yeah.
That's good.
Justice Hill behind
Derek Henry.
Slinghot.
Something like that.
I had the same question, Craig.
Yeah.
Slingshot, engage.
My unanswerable questions,
I have, how many people do you think
have been conceived in a wrestler steakhouse bathroom?
Okay.
Probably 100.
The ladies' room?
The ladies' room?
He chose me.
I asked you before.
I do wonder if it's the most product placement ever in a movie.
That's a good one.
I want to know where I can find the cows.
spread for Playgirl magazine?
He said he pulled his butt cheeks apart.
Mike Concho.
Mike Concho.
There's a world in which that has been,
that's a real thing that took place.
Like, they filmed that just for fun,
or that photo shoot exists.
Oh, 100%.
I bet you, like Adam McKay has that in his garage.
Right.
It's just files all these guys.
He just got them everywhere.
It's called Boogie Nights.
The other unanswerable question
that I do think is important is like,
do you think Ricky's right about the praying to baby Jesus thing?
Like, Jesus, obviously,
I think you can pray to whichever version of Jesus you want.
I agree.
It's kind of a good point.
Yeah.
It's very open of him, actually.
Yeah.
He's like, your Jesus can be whatever you want it to be.
This is my Jesus.
Can't even think yet.
Don't even know a word.
Newborn baby Jesus.
He wasn't mad.
I love how he's like, can you please heal my wife's father, Chip, who's leg, he has a horrible, horrible leg.
It smells terrible.
The only thing you've ever done is make a hot daughter.
The dogs are always bothering with it.
Horrible leg.
Horrible leg
The dogs are always
bothering with it
Okay
Almost done here
The memorabilia you'd want most
I think it's got to be
The Wonderbread hat
See
I had that
For like Halloween
So I kind of
It's like 40 bucks
So I kind of want something
Like the real car
This is memorabilia
You get the real one
The real one
It's sweaty as hell man
I don't know
I think I want
Will Ferrell's
Crystal Gale shirt
Hmm
I kind of want
The Cougar
The Cougar
The cougar mannequin.
Oh, like the stuffed cougar.
I want both.
It's like the real cougar.
Like people got those.
It's following me.
It's following me.
The real cougar is, first of all, it's probably dead.
You think it's dead?
That was too bad.
That was 20 years ago.
What do you think about in the car?
Where is that car now?
It's probably in a back lot somewhere.
That's what I want.
You want the car?
The old son said Gower, they had all these random cars from other movies parks.
And I was like, man, no one's using those.
I kind of want that car.
I want Game Warren Wonderbread suit and hat.
And, and, and, and, I want Game War and Reis Bobby's wardrobe.
He has some great clothes.
He doesn't.
You just want a six-pack of the malt liquor.
Hell yeah.
I love when the cougar, when it's clearly this.
See, what you're talking about with CGI.
It's clearly the stuff.
It's even funnier.
And they're like adding in like, like, like,
they're adding in, like, growls and stuff.
It's following.
It's following.
Mr. Miyagi Award for best and worst life lesson.
I think there are two life lessons that are in conflict.
And we have to decide which one is the old.
ultimate enduring lesson of this movie, which is, is it either are you first, your other first or
last? Or is it you could be second, third, fourth, or fifth? It's the latter. That's the point
of the movie is, you can be second, you can be third, you can be four. No, but the point of the movie
is, is you should be winning for yourself, not for anyone else. You should do it because you love it
and it's for you. Yeah, I mean, I think that's the obvious lesson of the movie is you can be second or
third or third. But if you had to pick first or last, or you could be second, third, fourth, or fifth,
which lesson would you go by?
You could be second, third, fourth,
or even, hell, even fifth.
That's loser mentality.
Yeah.
I kind of think it has to be
the lesson in the movie's first or last.
Greatness was built on first or last.
Sure.
The other lesson that I thought was very poignant in this movie
is sometimes people don't change.
Reese Bobby.
I mean, he put out tickets for him every week.
When he sells the tickets, that's a role.
The scalping of the tickets immediately after finally showing up
is the best bit.
I've in any movie ever.
60 bucks a pop.
I just want to leave that much money.
Dude, it's so good.
Because those things I imagine were fantastic.
Yeah, it was amazing.
I believe you got some tickets for me.
But then he just watches from outside the fence.
Who needs tickets?
Reese Bobby has great.
I always admired his like hitchhiker mechanics,
the thumb.
Oh, yeah.
He's really good on it.
He's natural.
He is, man.
Gary Cole.
He's just like fucking off.
It looks really good.
And he's doing the both ways thing.
Oh, it's so good.
It's great.
The way he's like watching from up in the behind the stands behind the fence,
afterwards and like shaking his can.
It's always like this is not his first rodeo.
He always has like backwash left.
Hey dad, where are you going?
Doesn't matter.
You're like, ooh.
Yeah, kind of like unexpectedly heavy that scene for a moment.
It does hit.
Best double feature choice.
I'll go blades of glory.
Really?
I feel like it has to be Anchorman or stepbrothers.
No, I want Will Ferrell playing sports.
I know.
The Will Ferrell playing sports thing does make sense
with Plades of Glory.
Yeah.
I want Ferrell and John C. Riley again.
I think I would rather watch Anchorman and Taladaganaites together.
You do Anchorman?
Yeah.
I think it's Anchorman.
Also, Cars was released in the same year.
That could be something.
Could watch them together.
Just the classic cars to Talladega.
Or just watch Days of Thunder.
Plades of Glory is underrated.
Plades of Glory is funny.
Movies good.
Yeah.
All right.
Last but not least, who won the movie?
I think it's feral.
I think it has to be Will Ferrell.
Not Cal?
Got to have sex with his friend's wife.
Consequence free, got his house.
Then he won at the end.
He won the race.
And he has all his sponsors.
No, it's Farrell.
Farrell wins the movie.
Yeah.
Over McKay and Farrell, if you could combine them, you would do that.
But it's got to be Farrell.
He's like the biggest movie star in the world, basically.
The finding comedy guy.
Those were the days, man.
Will it come back?
Yeah.
God.
I don't know.
I don't really have high hopes.
Okay.
We need a couple things.
We need like an obsession style comedy hit
Where it's like some movie made for $5 million box pops off
It'll happen
Or we need Shane Gillis and whoever
To be like screw it
We're doing a huge comedy.
Poor Cane Los Dose.
Yeah, both need to happen.
The YouTubers are just making movies, man.
This is the beginning.
Yeah.
There was some report about Shane Gillis doing some
big comedy in the next year or two.
Oh, interesting.
Yeah.
I saw on the Holly report.
or something like that.
Well, you said your favorite movie,
your favorite comedy
of the last, like, 10 or 15 years
was, what was it?
The invite?
Well, the invite came out this year,
which I thought was amazing movie.
Really funny.
Seth Rogen?
Yes, but that's like more of a,
it's not like a big broad comedy.
Not an ensemble comedy.
No, we need like stepbrothers again.
Things like that.
This was fun.
Danny Kelly.
We'll be back on this show.
Yeah, we'll see if we'll be back.
We'll be on the fantasy show, though.
Listen to that.
This is, what is, this is like,
it's Labor Day.
This episode is coming out.
So it's the same day as the take perch on the fantasy football feed that we do.
So check out the take purge, which is kind of all professional credibility is suspended for 60 minutes.
And we give takes that we've been holding on to all offseason.
And then we'll be with you throughout the entire NFL season.
Four shows a week.
Four shows a week.
The fantasy offseason is finally coming to an end.
Wild.
I know.
You guys are headed back to your homes.
Tad.
Yeah.
We spent a long time together.
11 days.
This is the longest we've ever spent together, right?
I think we did this last year.
We did, I think we did
We didn't do two weeks last year.
I think we did.
You were home.
We were traveling for two weeks.
Is that right?
You were gone on the tire.
Interesting.
Well, I've treated you some nice dinners.
I'll take you to the west side tonight.
Sure.
Hi, Fitz, D.K., thank you.
We'll see you next week.
I'll be watching, please.
All right, thanks.
