The Right Time with Bomani Jones - Domonique Foxworth on if Is Wemby NBA’s Next Villain? + Jalen Brunson’s New York Takeover | 06.17

Episode Date: June 17, 2026

Bomani Jones is joined by Dominique Foxworth for another episode of The Right Time, and they start with the massive NBA Finals ratings after the Knicks’ championship run. Bomani and Dominique discus...s why New York’s title felt so big, how Jalen Brunson became a permanent New York legend, and why the biggest winner of the Knicks’ championship might actually be James Dolan. Then, Bomani and Dominique get into the backlash around Victor Wembanyama after the Finals. Was Wemby really a “villain,” or are fans just looking for the next superstar to tear down? They break down the criticism of his physicality, the handshake discourse, and why the reaction to Wemby says a lot about how we talk about young stars. Plus, Bomani shares what it was like watching Senegal vs. France in Harlem during the World Cup, the energy around soccer in New York City, and why the World Cup hits differently depending on which neighborhood you’re in. It is that time of week where we have a guest join us. Check him out on the Dominique Foxworth show. Charlie Kravitz.
Starting point is 00:01:15 Donny Foxworth, what's going on? Not much, you need to have Charlie on at some point. I don't know. He hasn't accepted that he is like a personality now. He thinks he's a producer who just helps me out with the co-hosting. But like, people care about what he got to say. Had a man on.
Starting point is 00:01:31 Yeah, but that's why I can't have him all because we got he'll be another person on the list that me and Ryan talk about people who try to produce my goddamn show while my show was going all, right? The cats would be like, all right, I know we're going to get to this later, but, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey. If you got to say, but, you need to, like,
Starting point is 00:01:48 not do this. You know what I'm saying? Like, we can't have two people drive. Mr. Jesse Robbing this track. Yeah, I don't need my hands on the steering wheel. I'm along for the ride. Yeah, yeah, no, man. It's been a lot here going on. We're going to talk a little bit about the soccer ball.
Starting point is 00:02:04 We might get to Brendan Sorsby. Cats out here pass in bad checks. But actually, I just saw a number, and I have not warned you about this at all, but I never do, so it's okay. The numbers are in, at least the numbers they've given us, and they're telling us that these were the most watched NBA finals since 1998, and the game five peaked at 33 million viewers. Now, I don't know what exactly viewer means, right?
Starting point is 00:02:30 I don't know exactly how they compiled these statistics because they've done a lot of changes that have affected this. But isn't it amazing how the biggest city in America gets into the NBA finals and suddenly everything feels like it's back, or at least that's the story, and it becomes your friendly reminder. You know something that was going on with the Bulls were killing it? The third largest city in America had the best basketball team. And then you know what happened after that?
Starting point is 00:02:59 the second largest city in America had the best basketball team. You know what? Has it happened in 50 years? The biggest city in America had the basketball team. Yeah. I mean, and the Knicks, I mean, the Bulls going through the Knicks,
Starting point is 00:03:15 I imagine those were pretty popular series back in the day. I think you're probably right about the way we're calculating these things, but it doesn't really matter. We know this was, this shit was fucking huge. We all know it was huge. We experienced it. It was incredible.
Starting point is 00:03:28 It felt like, 2016, I guess, like those LeBron and Golden State series, those felt like huge in this way where everyone had to be there. But this, to me, honestly, felt a little bigger. And it was pretty cool the way that it was kind of a vibe shift around the NBA.
Starting point is 00:03:45 It felt like a lot of us were down on NBA and the fouls and all that stuff. And then the finals happened. We all forgot. It just fell in love again. So I think a few things happen because it's difficult for me to gauge the magnitude of these finals because I,
Starting point is 00:03:59 I'm in the middle of you. Right? Like, I don't know what it would have had to happen for the Knicks to be this far. It had not seemed like the biggest thing that it ever happened in the history of mankind, right? Because I am in the epicenter of the people who care the most absolutely 100% about this. But playoff basketball, I would say, felt like a return to what a lot of people say they wanted, which is a bit more physicality to start, right? Now, it wasn't the brand of physicality that I want, I want hard foul.
Starting point is 00:04:32 I just don't, I don't want people simply mucking it up, right? Like make it a little difficult, okay, no, I want people to be scared, right? I want people shooting mid-range jump shots because what's waiting on you in there is a close line. That's part of why the mid-range jumper went away is because it got a little, it's a little too safe down there in the paint. But when it was rough, rugged, and raw, cats was like, oh, let me stop right here. Get this Jay as I can get it.
Starting point is 00:04:57 They don't, yeah, I mean, they, that, they are pretty, like, loosey-goosey with the flagrists. They don't want that back. But they let you grab and push. They let you do all types of stuff. And I know Wimby got away with a head mush and some stuff like that. But generally, the stuff that they think is going to lead to a fight, they ain't got time for that. But these boys ain't going to fight. That's the other part, too.
Starting point is 00:05:17 Like, you need to recognize that we got to, you know, these boys too scared to fight now. We got a long way to go before anybody actually starts fighting. I don't know. I mean, I guess I, I guess, I would say that they, the reason why they don't fight is because the NBA has handled the business the way they handle it. You think that they wouldn't actually fight?
Starting point is 00:05:35 I think they make the decision not to fight. I'm saying that they have legislative fight now so much that these dudes are conditioned not to fight that there will be a lag before they actually like get to the point that they're going to be out here. Like we got a little while that you can allow this to happen. And I can't say, these boys probably can't fight
Starting point is 00:05:53 so ain't nobody really going to get hurt. Like there's that. I forget what series that will. was a more reason Lucas got into a fight with somebody way back in the day. And it reminded you it was a different time because them cats just looked at each other. And, you know, this is back when everybody's daddy went to the army. So they just looked at each other and they squared up like they was in. They put up their dukes because don't nobody put up their dukes no more, right?
Starting point is 00:06:14 They had their dukes up and they was ready to go because everybody had like a standard fighting technique that your daddy had taught you. And now at this point, that's not really like what that's not what they do. Do daddy still do that? Because, like, my dad definitely taught me how to throw a punch. Yeah. And, I mean, I mean, you were daddy. Yeah, I taught my son and my daughters how to ball up your fist.
Starting point is 00:06:37 Like, just important to know, don't put your thumb in. Like, I feel like this happened with both my daughters that they put their thumb in. They're like, no, I hope you never have to throw a punch. Probably will never have to throw a punch. But, like, if it happened, I'm going to need you to be able, like, it feels like something, like, fundamental about being a person is you have to be able to do that. And I've never been in like, it feels like women fights involved the hair. It's a strategic thing that I don't know how to advise for that because I ain't never been in one of them.
Starting point is 00:07:05 Well, as David Way has had that routine, right, where you talked about how men fight to look good, girls fight to win, right? And so he said he fought this girl and he was in one grade or whatever, and he was out here doing his Muhammad Ali or whatever, do, do, do. And she came in with the windmill. And it was just like, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, there's nothing to be done. No, stakes are way higher with women fight. Because also, like, how women look in the fight is much less of a discussion.
Starting point is 00:07:32 There's much less of an evaluation of technique by the onlookers and discussions about whether or night you had done this very often. I never considered that, but you're right, you could win a fight as a man, but if you, like, kicking and doing some cap-a-wearer, like people, you better do it right. It's like shooting underhand free throws. I don't care if you 90%. I ain't shooting. shooting them like that. I'd rather lose. I'd rather shoot 75%
Starting point is 00:07:58 than be on here trying to try to karate kick. That's right. That's right. That is what gets them. But I would say something else. Another thing I think was important about these finals in terms of like generating interest. We had an actual factual star. Yeah. Right. Now it's interesting kind of the the Victor Winbanyama backlash that has become, which I really think is in large part a social media phenomenon because it's It's a lather rinse repeat on how these things go, right? Like somebody lost, that means they are whack, terrible, whatever it is,
Starting point is 00:08:33 and da-da-da, you know, and everything goes. Look, the Spurs messed up and they built a team that did not have anybody to be any sort of enforcer. And so this dude had to go out here and enforce for himself. And I don't have nearly the problem with it. But I did not come away from this. People talk about him like he Rick Mahor coming out of this series. And I was just like, do you really think this has been that dirty? Or has everything been watered down?
Starting point is 00:08:54 a place that this is the guy that you think is that dude? We're on the same damn page, man. And I venture to say, not only did I not have a problem with it, got to fuck with it. Yeah. I got it.
Starting point is 00:09:10 I kind of, like, I didn't like him pushing Jalen Brunston in the head, but like the way that I saw it was, all right, I'm going to complain to the refs, which he did. I'm going to throw my arms up because they was grabbing them. They was fouling them up.
Starting point is 00:09:24 They was doing all types of stuff to make his life difficult. was like hacking him anytime he tried to do alley hoop. I'm going to throw my hands up to the reps. All right. I'm going to look to see where my power forward is to take care of this. Okay, I don't got one. All right. You know what I'm not going to do.
Starting point is 00:09:37 I'm not going back down. And I know at a fourth quarter, he stayed away from the pain a little bit. But like, I'm a fight. Like I, I, and this was like one of the conversations you had afterwards where it's like, there's something. And people try to compare it to 2011 LeBron where he kind of like, like, receded.
Starting point is 00:09:54 And my point was like, what I saw was what I liked. Like it didn't turn out well. He was exhausted. But what I saw was a man that was like, no, fuck that. I'm going back in there. Every time I'm a fight, I'm going to be sloppy.
Starting point is 00:10:07 I'm going to miss free throws and turn the ball over. I may be like fatigued at the end of the games. But like at 22 years old, like I came away with this year, kind of impressed by him. And I know he choked. But I didn't think this is, I didn't think he receded. I thought the only time I felt like it started to feel like choking was at the end of game five
Starting point is 00:10:24 when none of those guys wanted a shot. right like that was and i view choking a little differently than most people in individual sports we treat it much differently because everybody chokes and there's nowhere to hide right they like you've seen serena williams choke you've seen tiger woods choke anybody worth a damn at an individual sport you have watched choke because it happens sometimes where your mind comes away from you betrays you whatever it is um it's not that crazy we've seen Kobe Bryant air ball the free throws we've seen like we've seen dudes do a million things in the course of the moment He played very well, I thought, in that series.
Starting point is 00:10:58 I don't think that you can look at the numbers and say he didn't. I said game four, what gets lost in it is he made two huge defensive plays at the end. One of them was the block that set up Deerrin Fox to, you know, ruin his reputation in front of everybody. He played great defense on Jalen Brunson, when Jalen Brunson missed the shot. And then O.G. came in because Deerrin Fox did not feel like boxing in his real, real, real tough go for Deere Fox. Like this was, it's amazing people like, they got to trade him. One, they're not.
Starting point is 00:11:31 Number two, the reason you think they need to trade him, you think somebody was like, oh, give me some of that. Yeah, that's that. You wanted to staple something on to it at that point. And you can't be giving away these assets in that way. But yeah, I, there's obviously fair criticism of Wembe in this series. But like, I ultimately thought similar to you was like, yeah, he played really well all.
Starting point is 00:11:55 things to consider. And what it looked like was, and I think sometimes we fall into these traps where we want to fall in, or we go with these easy tropes and I run the risk of doing this now where it's about age. But it did feel like every game he came out and they started fast. Every game, it just felt like a damn wild teenager out there. I was like, I'm going to beat these motherfuggers right now. Yes. And then they get to the end of the game. And it's like, you learn that. You watch Jalen Brunson in the course of this. It's like, all right, he's like measured. And then, that first quarter energy that set the tone energy that Wimby was bringing, Jalen was bringing in the fourth quarter. So I think that's part of it too.
Starting point is 00:12:34 Janna Brunson became like guy you must respect in this. Look, you put up 45 in the game winner. And I think the part that makes it tricky is his I'm doing this, he just does it. It's not really that much fun to watch, right? He does not look, he does not look to be an exceptional talent. But as I keep saying, none of that matters. what matters is to actually get it done part. That's why when people start getting into, well,
Starting point is 00:12:59 is he the best player in the NBA? I'm like, man, let's not even do that, right? It doesn't matter. He just did the thing, but what he is not is a guy who engenders polarizing opinions. Right? There are short people that love him like family and then regular-sized people who respect them.
Starting point is 00:13:17 You know what I mean? Like, that's what we wind up having. Victor, however, we got that kind of star now where people came out of that with strong opinions one way or another. He's the guy that you have to come see. I think the villain part was almost inevitable just because the Will Chamberlain line, nobody roots for Goliath, but I never felt like Shaq was a person that people disliked for whatever reason.
Starting point is 00:13:42 The reason that I think that Victor gets so polarizing, if you may be frank, people don't like it when they look at somebody and look at them and be like, damn, he might be better than me. I don't mean like better than you at basketball. I mean better than you at being. Like what I, I'm curious if you think I'm tripping on this part, as you and I are both men of what I would consider
Starting point is 00:14:05 to be healthy levels of confidence. And I don't mean healthy as a euphemism. I mean healthy as it is in the dictionary. After a loss with a guy like him, and it was the same thing with LeBron in 2011, they don't want you humbled. They want you humiliated. They want you up there looking defeated,
Starting point is 00:14:28 looking like you're ready to cry about it, everything else. And that's not what they got from him. Like I saw people call them a sore loser. I didn't say that at all. He was like, look, man, they beat us at the martyrs. He's like, Jalen Brunson. He is relentless. He never stops.
Starting point is 00:14:41 Like, I saw the credit go in that direction. And then I realized, oh, y'all just want this man to look battered. and he's not going to give you that. He's about to go up in the mountains, do some goddamn Tai Chi or something else like that. Who knows what he's going to come back and look at? But he almost got too much perspective.
Starting point is 00:15:01 Like, people don't want somebody that knows how to handle adversity in a positive way. They want somebody who cry when they read tweets. And he's like, I don't read your tweets. What are you talking about? And it's amazing for somebody that age. Like, imagine, you could use athletes
Starting point is 00:15:19 sort of average 22-year-old. Like, it's clear. He said, what he did? After, it's just so funny because after they won that series, he was like, championships are all that matters to me. Like, this is the reason why I'm on this earth. And he gives everybody the stuff that they want. And it's like, he's not giving it to you because he knows you want it,
Starting point is 00:15:39 which I think a lot of athletes are giving you the thing that they think that you want. And we like call it quarterback speak sometimes where they just say, and like athletes are doing that. And there was a time. decades ago when we thought it was genuine and maybe it was genuine. The hard thing now is Victor seems to be the type of superstar that is more talented than just about anybody we've ever seen and also gives us the genuine feedback. It doesn't sugarcoat it.
Starting point is 00:16:07 It doesn't play this game that he expects us to play. LeBron, even though you point to that time when he's like, I got money, y'all don't essentially. They're great. He did not say that. That's what people heard. Right, right. I know, I know. I know, but that's the point.
Starting point is 00:16:20 He said, you got to go back to your life. People were like, ugh. Yeah. That sounds terrible. Yeah, that's fine. I was like, my life's pretty good, LeBron. Good luck next year, buddy. It's how I felt.
Starting point is 00:16:32 But I understand why people would take it another way. But I think that LeBron has been like super measured in the way that he talks and saying to things you want to say. Victor hasn't been that. And up until now, the things that he said are the things that we wanted to hear and they were true. Now he's behaving it in a way that some people don't want to hear. And like the whole handshake gate, like all this stuff to me feels like we have constructed this factory that is meant to make a certain thing. And no matter what we put in it, we go put what's going to come out is this same kind of track record that we do with these players where it's like, all right, you're going to be the best.
Starting point is 00:17:07 You can't get over the hump. You are a villain. And then we're going to watch them come back up three, four, five years from now. We're going to be all singing Victor's praise. And give ourselves credit for it. Yeah. right like that's yeah you know we gave we gave that boy a little something to uh a little something to get i'll say this anthony edwards completely changed the way i look at the handshake at the end of a series
Starting point is 00:17:31 and for those who didn't see it you know where edwards gave the handshake during the game and everybody was like oh man you you you quitting they was taking him out the game the quitting had the quitting had already taken place that was a post-quit move as opposed to a pre-quit move But what he said, I saw some clip where he's hanging around the crib with his partners. And what he said was, he was like, look, man, at the end of the series, everybody jumping up and down and all of this stuff, he's like, man, ain't nobody got no time to be out here doing all this. Then I got in, I did it when the time was, gave him the respect they deserve, and then I rolled out. The Knicks about to be jumping up and down and doing all of this stuff.
Starting point is 00:18:13 Oh, man, y'all got it. Maybe I'll holl at you later. But right now, like Jaylon Brunson went over to to daff him up. That was very nice of him, right? But I don't think Jaila Brunce's feelings were hurt that the dude walked away. We just need something. Like, we got to feed the beast of the machine. That's exactly what I, I mean, that's the way I felt about it. And like, I don't know. It's funny because I want to say that it's not, it's a non-issue. These things are non-issues. But I do think that we can turn things that are non-issues into like issues because we talk about it. And like, we have to talk to the series ended and something unique happened. Anthony Edwards goes and shakes their hands before the game is over.
Starting point is 00:18:51 People actually had a problem with that. Had he not shaking their hand, so it's like, there is a 10-minute period that is the perfect time to shake their hand. Like, I don't remember what they were down, but they were down by enough. They were losing by a zillion points. His coach was like, nah, everybody sit down. Hey, guys are into the bench who I call by their number, not their name. Go ahead in there.
Starting point is 00:19:15 Like, yeah, I'm going to go. Yeah. And it's like, no, you can't do that. You also can't do it back in the back in the locker room. You got to do it where we can see it right after. It just feels like you making it up. And then the stuff with Victor is, I don't know, of course, you raising kids to play sports.
Starting point is 00:19:31 You're like, yeah, be a good sport, shake hands afterwards. But we had a game. It was two years ago. My son was talking trash, got into it with a couple of guys. They're like pushing each other on the field. Don't go over there and shake his hand because you're not calm. Yeah. Because I don't want to do that.
Starting point is 00:19:48 Like we when you feel if you feel up to it go shake his head. Don't put yourself in that situation. And maybe that's how Victor's think. Now I do think there's something to the idea of a. Get your snap out of it. Yeah. Like I think there's a lesson in you don't feel like it. You're doing things you don't feel like, right?
Starting point is 00:20:06 I do think that there is a lesson in that. I also think that at the NBA point, we're kind of past the lesson teaching point in some ways. Like I think I just think there's a different set of circumstances that you deal with. the other part, too, when you shake hands in youth games, you make everybody get in a line. It is a, it is a group endeavor. And in the other stuff, it is like, all right, everybody kind of get in where you fit in and get it going.
Starting point is 00:20:29 I want to ask you this about the Knicks, too. People say, I've had people tell me they don't think I'm giving the Knicks enough credit, and I just don't know how much credit you think I'm supposed to give the Knicks. Like, I feel like I've given the Knicks quite a lot of credit in the run of this, right? I mean, I listen to the show, see, like, you're giving them credit. I don't know where are you undercutting the Knicks, like, won the championship is pretty impressive. But I thought a couple of things in watching this.
Starting point is 00:20:50 And now we're in the aftermath of it, which I think is the fun. The analysis of the series has obviously been done. The biggest winners from a championship, it's not quite Jalen Brunson, who was already at a certain legend status where I don't think New York was going to hold it against Jalen Brunson if they did not win a championship, right? They do hold it against Patrick Ewing in some ways. But I did not think they were going to hold it against Brunson because it was such a pleasant surprise, and everything that came with it.
Starting point is 00:21:16 Now, the biggest winners from any championship are dudes like three through 12 on the bench because they get to be somebody in ways that nobody ever expected. McHale Bridges, these people have been calling him soft and talk about how scared he was at the shots. They had to take him out in game four for Jose Alvarado. Bro, I was watching the soccer bowl the other day.
Starting point is 00:21:41 It was the French and Senegal gang. They put Bridges on the screen. he got an ovation from the bar, right? I don't even know how many people in the bar was from America. He got an ovation from the bar. Alvarado, I said it as soon as that game was over, Alvarado going to go to that Puerto Rican Day parade. He went to the Brooklyn one because he's from down there.
Starting point is 00:21:58 I'm like, oh, baby, you the king. All those cats, man, they live in the life. I can't even imagine. In New York City, I think that 20 years from now, maybe people won't recognize some of those guys except for when they're at the garden and they put them on the screen and they won't necessarily get the same like appreciation.
Starting point is 00:22:24 Of course, Jalen Brunson is on Jeter status now. Yes. No matter what he do for the rest of his life in New York City, he won't pay for nothing. Like, I don't even know how to put into words how incredible it's going to be for him forever because 20, 30 years from now, Jalen Brunson is still going to be the one guy that brought this city a title. But there's another level he be going to the temple. He, right?
Starting point is 00:22:55 He, like, he got his wife. I saw somewhere with somebody in Westchester. It was like, they, yeah, they know him as like, oh, the dude from temple. So he bring, he bringing worlds together. You know what I'm saying? He's going to fuck around and have a hooping-ass Lenny Krabbits out here too, right? And then it's just going to be a whole other situation. So, yeah, like, he.
Starting point is 00:23:14 Taylor got it figured out, man. They got it good. He's living the life. Look, you know how good it was going to be for them in New York where after the championship, Casper they even would be like, oh, let's go to Vegas. Oh, let's go to Miami. They was like, no.
Starting point is 00:23:26 Let's get back to the shack. They didn't wait on us. To be fair, I don't know how to put this in a way that don't sound crazy, but I think you'll understand it. Maybe you'll disagree. New York has the best everything. It's got the best everything.
Starting point is 00:23:42 It's just you can't afford it. Yes. So, like, Vegas has the greatest parties that you can afford. Yeah. Right? That you can get into. That's the thing.
Starting point is 00:23:55 And people don't know. I'm not saying you like everybody. Yeah, yeah. I'm including me too. Like a couple times I stumbled into one of these New York parties or somebody told me about it. I was like, oh no. I live some good times, had some good fun.
Starting point is 00:24:10 Like New York in America, New York got the best. everything you want, no matter what you think that you can get something better somewhere else, I don't care if it was originated there. Right. It's better in New York. You just don't know how to get it. And so if you are a guy in New York
Starting point is 00:24:27 that can get in all the doors, never ever leave Manhattan, sir. It's 8 million people who can't wait to see you. Right? 8 million people who cannot wait to see you. They've been doing the big... Sorry, let me cut you off. Can I ask you this question?
Starting point is 00:24:44 What do you think this, his persona and reach and access is worth? Like, put his contract aside. He's like, now what he has access to, if you could sell it, like, he could get into whatever business deals in New York that he's interested in. He'd get into every club, every restaurant, get into movies and TV shows. I don't even know what the limit is. If this was for sale, what do you think somebody would pay to be able to, from now on, be Jalen Brunson? There's no room that he cannot get into, right?
Starting point is 00:25:22 So I'll give this, I think I've talked about this before here, but I'll give this example. I got a buddy of mine who, and this is a thing that happens kind of in New York places, people who know people like connectors, right? There are people who are able to link people. Worldwide West is a great example of a connector, but that's a different discussion. and they'll just sometimes put together dinners with people at the dinners. And so I went to one of these dinners.
Starting point is 00:25:47 I'm sitting across the table from Tai Tai, Jay Z's man, right? JJ Reddings before he came to go. JJ Reddick in there, I look over. Kevin loves over there in this corner. I don't even like recognize half the people. Jimmy Fallon came in in the middle of the meal, right? My guy, Coppomen was there, was there, we were there.
Starting point is 00:26:06 and this one guy walks in and they're like, oh, it's DJ D. Saul. I'm like, what do you talk about? That white man don't look like no DJs. He's a bald and white man in a polo and khakis and Dominique know who I'll talk about. Man's name is David Solomon. He's the CEO of Goldman Sachs.
Starting point is 00:26:23 I'm talking to this other dude and I ask him what he does and he's like, takes a pause and he goes, well, I started Chipotle. Okay, and I'm watching as like some political deal was made around like with Chipotle, sending stuff somewhere. Like, I'm watching all these things that are happening in this room. And all I'm saying is, I got in that room,
Starting point is 00:26:43 which means that there's another room that I have no chance of getting into. And there is no such thing as a room that Jalen Brunson cannot get into, and there's so much money in the city. We did an interview with Tracy Morgan for game theory. And it's always interesting to hear New Yorkers talk about New York, especially like guys who grew up poor. and his, but, and I say that specifically with him because he was like, no, man, you go, you point right down there.
Starting point is 00:27:12 He's pointing, like, all the money in the world is right down there. You just got to figure out how to go get it. Right? Like, that's the thing about the proximity of New York to catch it here. It's just like everything is accessible. And it's like, if I can just figure out how to get there, I can get a hold of all of it. Jayal Brunson, they got to figure out shit. Forget the rooms.
Starting point is 00:27:32 I just realized that. just about anybody, he could say, come to me today and they'd be thrilled. They would post a picture. Yeah. That man could get in on any IPO he want right now. Yeah. He's just like, hey, let me get a piece of that. He ain't even got to give him no money.
Starting point is 00:27:53 Let me get a piece of that. Put my name on that. No, that's the thing about these famous cats with these IPOs or whatever. They just go in and they get associated with it and go talk to a couple of people. there's a business here where somebody would be like hey if you came into like some immediate celebrity like this like we're going to help you flip this because like i don't need like jalen brunswick could not have anticipated this he can't even be prepared because there's a period of time where he got the golden ticket it's a long period but he got the golden ticket he can flip that it
Starting point is 00:28:25 and so many different things if he just was ready for it and look there's nothing he could do to mess this up and coming up next i'm going to tell you how i'd know there's nothing he could do to mess this up because I'm going to tell you who's actually been the biggest winner in all of this. And when I say the answer, it's going to seem so obvious, but there's no question who the biggest winner is. It's Jim Dolan. Like I said, Jalen Brunson has moved.
Starting point is 00:33:51 up a tick from where he was already, right? Like he was going to be New York Knicks legend, and that was going to do a lot of stuff. When the Knicks won the championship, and the owner always gets to hold the trophy first, right? Which I know bothers a lot of people, but I get it. You know what I mean? I get it. Dolan has got on that orange spoke sport coat, and he looked so happy to be there. Because Dolan's biggest problem as owner of the Knicks in terms of the on-court product is that he's a Knicks fan. He acts like a Knicks fan.
Starting point is 00:34:33 He does Nick fan things, right? But he grabbed that trophy and was like, and to the fans of New York, I'm sorry it took so long, but we'll do it again. But as I watched him, I was like, he is just as happy as every other Knicks fan. I've never seen an owner look happier, like, as though he was part of it.
Starting point is 00:34:54 And Dolan made some moves. I think Dolan deserves a little more credit for this team than people want to give him credit for. But he looked so happy in that moment. It was the first time I had ever considered that Jim Dolan was a human being. And then after that, they started sitting around that video of him
Starting point is 00:35:09 giving the sacrifice speech that I thought was pretty mediocre. And it's definitely not some shit. I want to hear from Jim Dolan, but people were like, wow, that was a really good speech. Like, he did the thing. He, he did the thing. He made bold moves along the way to do the thing. You say everything you want about the CAA association that the Knicks have as a franchise
Starting point is 00:35:31 in Dolan, but he hired that CAA guy who brought in the, he brought in his client's kid who's represented by the general manager. It's really weird what's going on with all of that. But the bottom line is all that Dolan stuff. kind of came together and they won a championship. It is a reminder that in several cases, the ends justify the means. And we will create whatever if,
Starting point is 00:36:00 we'll create whatever mythology we want around you if you did the thing that we want you to do. If our last memory of you is you did the most amazing, exceptional thing, then we'll cook up all this other stuff and start to pretend like your sacrifice speech was fire. And all these other things, I'm not someone who, like, obviously nothing is always absolute. And the ins just right of means is not something that I stand by. But it is a reminder that if Michael Jordan never won the title and he act the way he act,
Starting point is 00:36:30 we'd like, get monster. If you get them goals, then people are like, he's a fierce competitor. Like, we figure it out. But I will say this also for Dolan. And it was another moment where he looked really human. Like when he got to the end of that speech, it was kind of a look on his face. And I think what dawned on me was he really did truly believe last year they had a team that was good enough to win a championship. And he looked at those guys this year in a way that the rest of us did not.
Starting point is 00:36:59 And he really truly believe this is the chance I've been waiting on for all these years in owning the team. And then it happened. Like, can you imagine what a good mood Jim Dolan has been in for the last like six, seven? weeks? Like once when they were out here winning elimination games by 60 points? Yeah. I don't know if he was in a good mood, though. I mean, I don't think he was in a bad mood. He's in a fine mood.
Starting point is 00:37:24 But I feel like that's like just pressure building on him. Like, I don't know that he was enjoying it or relieved. Because he's still a Knicks fan. Yeah, he's still, yeah, he's just like, you know what it's going to go wrong at some point. And I think it's interesting that you say it reminds us that he's a human being because I think it's a good point. It's like, and I've been toyed around with this idea about like how these people are characters to us. a little bit is like, yes, because we don't really hold in our head space for these like public
Starting point is 00:37:50 people, especially in these like major dramas to be multiple different things. Like Jim, Jim Dolan was the villain. That's it. That's all he was. He's the villain. They went to championship. Now he had this like resurrection story. And I think the same is true for a lot of the characters in this is like, and that's the same
Starting point is 00:38:06 thing with Wimby. It's like you can't, people can't really hold in their head to multiple things. Like, oh, he was a hero. Now he's a villain. Right. Now, I will say the words the Dolan is still there, the facial recognition stuff. Oh, yeah, yeah, that's still there. The way they deal with media, like all the other Dolan stuff is there.
Starting point is 00:38:20 And you know what? Who's to say? He might flip up his whole stees. Like, trying to figure out the most delicate politically correct way to put this. But you ever met somebody and all they needed was somebody. Yep. And then they get somebody. Yep.
Starting point is 00:38:41 And then everything changes. True story. I'll never forget this. I have a buddy who has a poor relationship with one of his siblings. And I witnessed it with my own eyes, right? It was not to heat. Relatable content for me. And I watched it, and he and I had talked about this,
Starting point is 00:39:04 and he was talking about how he always felt like his mom gave the sibling a little bit too much slack, right? And again, relatable content. I understood what he was talking about. But that sibling had had a very big change in their life. And the mom kept saying, you know, now that that's happened, I think everything is different. Right. And my man was like really not trying to hear it. Okay.
Starting point is 00:39:30 All of that. I went and talked to the sibling. And I talked to the sibling for 90 seconds. And I came back to my friend and was like, hey. We're going to talk about this more later, but your mother is 100% correct. Everything is different. And it was a big thing on that side, right? But we really was like, there is an ease that has been created by this circumstance.
Starting point is 00:39:57 Like, everything is different. Who knows, man, Jim Dolan might come around here and turn it into Daddy Warbuss. I mean, I think people say that often about like women after they have a, well, maybe not often, but I've heard it women in my life, they had children. And it's like, oh, you're just like. Like, you're just different now. Especially if it's been difficult. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:40:15 And then you're just like, it changes. And I think that as Jim Dolan probably feels like that. Like, who there might be an opening for him to be less of the way that he is. And maybe he would just experience his love and like it. Like, I don't know. What drives him at this point? Maybe it's just going to be to just be happy and enjoy his next championship. We can, we can pray.
Starting point is 00:40:36 Now, never buy that a prevailing theory that makes a lot of sense. It's part of why this has gone so well for the Dix is that Dolan was. a little bit too caught up with sphere. Yep. Hands off, man. You got to say, man, the sphere, for Dolan to be an apparent moron, the sphere seems like a great idea that I can't,
Starting point is 00:40:52 I want to go check out at some point. Yeah, I'd be wanting to check it out too and people around me like, you gotta go see it. And I look at the rundown. It's like, they don't want me to come to this fear. Yeah, they're not having your type of axe. They ain't putting my kind of axe up there.
Starting point is 00:41:07 Like, when they start putting my kind of axe up there, maybe I go back out there. I don't want to see a concert. at the sphere, but, like, they have, like, a movie that they run. And I would rather go see that. Like, I go to concerts for music. Right. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:41:19 Like, I don't need all them bells and whistles and, uh, and distractions. I just, I just, but I hear they got like, like, it's like super IMAX. Yeah. All right. I could, uh, I could run that. Maybe I see this right fast. It's going to change gears a little bit. Um, the soccer bowl is going on.
Starting point is 00:41:36 I imagine the soccer bowl has to be supercracket in D.C., especially. I bet y'all's Africans is having. a great time. Absolutely. I mean, it's pretty clear. Like, people wear a jersey, so you can figure out pretty quickly where people are from. But the fact of the matter is, it don't matter if you're not white, you cheer. Like, it's intense fans of, like, most of the non-white nations. And I don't know if it's like that everywhere, but it's like, you assume because somebody got on an Ivory Coast jersey and they got an accent that they might be from Ivory Coast. because, nah.
Starting point is 00:42:14 Don't start guessing. Don't start guessing. They just, yeah, they just not white. That's what it goes. Well, let me tell you the wild thing that happened up here in Harlem, USA. So for those of you who don't know, the Senegalese, they got them a stretch. 116th Street from Lennox to Frederick Douglass. That is theirs.
Starting point is 00:42:35 The consulate is over there. They be outside all the time. They got all their restaurants, everything, right? So one of my buddies hits me and it's like, yo, we're going to go down to 116th and watch the game. Let's go. I'm like, bet. Let's go. So we walked down.
Starting point is 00:42:51 Brother, NYPD was blocking off the streets. You had to have a purpose to go down there. And not just like, right. So, but it was funny because one of my buddies, white dude was going to meet me down there. And he said, hey, just letting you know, man, they're trying to stop people coming on the street. He said, I just told him I was meeting friends and they let me go. But I'm pretty sure that was because I was white. right and so I got down there I said the same thing and they let us go but it wasn't like it was
Starting point is 00:43:18 the streets was full of people like I couldn't figure out what they was trying to do so we went down but the spot was a little bit too small and so we decided well we'll go try a spot on the next block but they wouldn't let us on the next block like we was giving them that same same sad ass story we gave them on the other block they weren't going for it you got a reservation let me see it if you don't work here or you don't live here like I don't know what they were afraid was going to happen in the Senegalese part of town during this match. But NYPD What's up, Zorod? Have you heard about this?
Starting point is 00:43:46 NYPD set up the barricades and they weren't letting people go. And it was really kind of messed up because not every Senegalese person lives on 116. So if they were living on like 118 and they wanted to pull up, they weren't letting them show up. Like I didn't understand what it was. So we say, fine. We go to Harlem Tavern on 116th, Frederick Douglass and we watched the match there
Starting point is 00:44:09 because that is where Senegalese fans wound up going along with about three or four French fans who I contend were doing a terrible job of reading the room. And it was, and they was all, they was white, you know what I'm saying? And I don't know if they was from France. I don't know exactly. I don't know how they chose this location. Maybe they was tourists. And they didn't realize exactly what they were in.
Starting point is 00:44:33 It was a fun place to be for the game, man. Because when Senegal did anything, it was cool. but, you know, French wound up winning. And I would be honest with you, when Mbapé hit that goal to put it up 3-1, that shit felt like running up the score, man. Like, it ain't even, they just got the excitement. Woo!
Starting point is 00:44:50 Senegal scored a goal. They had another goal. Taking away for an offside. Everything was cool. It was immediate. Embapé, I don't know what word they got for people like him in French. You know what I'm saying? But because that, you know, because that's real weird there.
Starting point is 00:45:04 Like, the Cinnahese team is a bunch of French dudes. The French team has a bunch of Cinegalese. dudes, it's all over the place. But it was so interesting, because as I'm walking out, this dude recognized me. It was like, what team were you rooting for? You know, how offended I was that he asked me that question? It's France versus Senegal, and you're asking me who I'm rooting for? You think I'm rooting for oppression?
Starting point is 00:45:26 You think I'm rooting for the colonizer? Yeah, yeah. What did you think? Now, when France plays Spain, I le le blue. Yeah. Oh, that was the other funny part. So after the game was over, it was a woman, and I was so confusing, she had on a Senegal t-shirt that said, Allé, Le Le Leon, the Lions, I guess, right?
Starting point is 00:45:48 And out of nowhere, she just starts singing, Alley Le Bleu, Alley Le Blue. Man, them people at the bar turned around and looked at her. This one middle-aged woman looked at her. I ain't never seen daggers shooting somebody like that. And then I looked at that woman had a handful of French flags. She was just trying to get that money, dog. He was just trying, but she almost got got. Yeah, I don't have, I'm not that person.
Starting point is 00:46:17 So I know people, when I went to the basketball game and Spencer Hawes was there and by himself and with Spurs stuff on, celebrating in the middle of the crowd every time anything happened early in the game. I don't got that in me. Like, if I'm going to a game and I'm not, and I'm root for the other team, I'm gonna be chill. Like I don't get that impulse to be like, hey, everybody to go into somebody's house
Starting point is 00:46:41 and act the ass. I don't have that in me. I don't know the type of people who do, but yeah. I know this one was selling flags, but those other people are like, I'm gonna go back watching my hotel room. No, I get the impulse. I get the desire.
Starting point is 00:46:55 I just felt like you as French man need to understand. Yeah. The stakes. The stakes is a little high for this jibba jabber that you're doing. I tell you this, though. I don't know if this happened to social media feeds, but somebody on Tuesday decided, oh, yeah, Tuesday, somebody decided you need Cape Verde content in your life.
Starting point is 00:47:17 And it was just pumping me nonstop videos at Cape Verde and women at soccer matches. I got all of it, all of it, all of it. And if I had been in Atlanta and I had seen that in the morning, I'd have been on Stubhub, Hub, Seat, whichever one it was, I'd have caught my, caught the marty down there. Like we got to say like around New York, man, I'm not going to be here for most of it. It's time to start hitting them spots, man. That is definitely.
Starting point is 00:47:45 I mean, and that's always a World Cup thing too. No matter who playing, they're going to find them. Yeah. They're going to find them. Yeah, I was, I got that same algorithm. I think it knows I age and race and sexual preference. It was like, I got you. Yo, but like if the soccer match is like when I don't,
Starting point is 00:48:05 it appears to be a different archetype of person. Now we're specifically talking about women here, but different archetype of people for all the different games. But like there's a particular archetype of woman who goes to hockey games. And buddy, that's a, that's a sociological study all by itself, right? It is the football, the basketball is all of it. The soccer just seems to be a little bit more fun,
Starting point is 00:48:28 a little more sporty. I went to Columbia, Brazil in 2014 in Miami. and I think I told you, I didn't know they made jerseys that small. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. It's funny because I was talking to one of my homeboys and we were going to meet up to watch the USA game and we're going to meet up at a bar
Starting point is 00:48:50 to watch the first half, at least the USA game. And he said to me, what kind of women that's going to be there? These beer drinkers? I knew exactly what he meant. I was like, yeah, it's kind of a little. low-key, yeah. It's going to be beer-drinking women here, and it's not
Starting point is 00:49:08 going to be like vodka and tequila drinking. And he was like, oh, yeah, I ain't trying to go there. You got to pick a different spot. He's single. So he's like, yeah. I'm like, yeah. Because you said hockey? I was like, yeah. There's beer drinkers. I will say this, though.
Starting point is 00:49:21 And I could be wrong. But anytime I've seen clips of like the men's national team going to play in these places, it's looking like a sausage party. I don't feel like American soccer interest has gotten to the point where this is a place for women to get cute and have a good time.
Starting point is 00:49:39 Definitely not. I mean, I could be wrong. But I don't see. Other places. Like, there's, I don't know. I mean, I think you probably know you do a lot of traveling, but like the place that it holds in society and other places is so much more important. And like as much as we love football, I don't even think for a lot of these soccer nations
Starting point is 00:49:58 that our country loves football as much as they love soccer and is as ingrained as it is in the culture and society. It's like a thing. It reminds me a little bit. And again, you can speak better to this to me, but it reminds me of like Texas high school football. And like it's, it's a part, it's like a real sector of their lives in the way that sports isn't for us in America. Now, this is, this is an amazing time to be in New York City. I know people are probably tired to hear me say that, but the Knicks just won the championship. And then the World Cup energy is just all over the place. People hitting me up. What are my buddies that come into town for the World Cup? He was like, yo, Bruce is just won.
Starting point is 00:50:34 Brazil is everywhere. Right? Like, it is a, like, you go find the neighborhood, you go find a bar, you go find a spot or whatever it is. It's been some, what we call,
Starting point is 00:50:43 perfect New York days where that weather, been hitting just right. Like, this is a perfect confluence of circumstances right now for the entirety of the sporting world because the other thing about the Knicksman
Starting point is 00:50:54 in the championship that is interesting, everybody seems happy for them. Yep. Except for, like, Celtics fans. Are they mad? I didn't know. I mean, they've been overshadowed.
Starting point is 00:51:03 There's a rival. You know, there's a bit of a robbery that we don't think about because the Knicks been sorry. And quite honestly, the Celtics have been sorry for a long time too. Yeah. I mean, it's been pretty universal. This story, Jalen Brunson fits so perfectly into, like, this underdog, like, arc and people have all fall in love with that team.
Starting point is 00:51:23 Wemby did the thing to make it easy to root against them, and it's New York. Like, yeah, it feels like the whole country is on board, which is an unusual thing for New York. And I know you've made the point before about how it's the only basketball team, in Manhattan. Yeah, Nets, whatever. People are like the Nets need to just give it up. Pack it up, guys.
Starting point is 00:51:42 Pack it up. But you have to take the Nets for what they are. And the Nets are an off-Broadway show. And if you would like to go see a show and you don't want to pay Broadway prices, then you go see the Nets. That's what the Clippers always were.
Starting point is 00:52:02 Like, especially a Staples Center era clippers. That's what they were. Like the Lakers, that cost a little too much money. But LeBron's in town. They played against the clippers. Why don't you go pull up and, you know, and check out the game? Like, that's what the Nets are. But if they were ever going to get a hold of like an actual factual fan base, that is a wrap.
Starting point is 00:52:24 Like, how would you, if you didn't have a team and you were like young in New York, how would you ever decide that you're not going to get on the Knicks wag? I'm old and not in New York and I bought a hat and a t-shirt. I'm 43-year-old man living D.C. I'm on the bandwagon. Yeah, like, there's nothing about the Nets that I'm surprised. We, I'm done talking about them. Yeah, like, it's just, I don't, I don't, like, maybe you guys should move.
Starting point is 00:52:52 That's the team. People talk about maybe they should move in Nashville. I don't know, but it's not, it's, no, man, the Nicks were wobble. fully. Right? Like, it was, the Nets, the Nets needed to just mess around and win them championships when they had them boards.
Starting point is 00:53:09 They might, and I mean, they still wouldn't have taken over for the NICs, but they had a chance of being like a cool, different franchise. They launched, and it just always felt so contrived. It was like, look, we're from Brooklyn. We're going to wear the biggie jerseys.
Starting point is 00:53:22 Jay Z's a part owner. We're going to buy all these good players and then not get nothing done. You know, maybe, just maybe. Should have stayed their asses. is in New Jersey. New Jersey has a distinct identity. New Jersey is its own place.
Starting point is 00:53:39 It's funny you say that because I feel like I don't think of New Jersey as its own place. I know it's a distinct identity, but it feels like New Jersey is either Philly or New York. New Jersey is either Philly or New York, except Philly or New York are making it very clear to you that it's New Jersey. I get it. I know that they don't feel that way. Yes. But for me and the rest of the world, and the people who are in Jersey also,
Starting point is 00:54:05 like it seems like they're like, yeah, we're real close to New York or we real close to Philly. Yeah, but no, there's in the middle New Jersey, too. Eh. What you know about Middle New Jersey? That is there. Exactly. So it ain't.
Starting point is 00:54:20 It's one of those places went on a dot, as you would say. Yes, it is. I'll tell you this, though. What do I know about Philly, New Jersey? You all get caught slipping. Oh, I mean, I feel the same way, about New York, New Jersey. But specifically, the Philly, New Jersey town,
Starting point is 00:54:34 honestly, I just thinking about Camden. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I don't spend that much time. I spend a lot of time in New York, so I spend some time in the New York party, Jersey. I don't really, my daughter is in Philly right now running and track nationals, but I don't really get much time to the Philly portion.
Starting point is 00:54:52 I have not gone to New Jersey of my own volition. I caught a flat. out in Newark for South by Southwest in 2024. I think that's the last time. It just don't come up. Yeah, I mean, it's there because like the people
Starting point is 00:55:10 they don't live in New York. Yeah, if you don't have a car New Jersey, it's just like, it's got great views of the city though. Like, if you ever go over there, the city look dope. Yeah, I see it, but then you come back over to the city and the city is actually dope. Right here. Right here.
