Starting point is 00:01:57 Check him out on the press box. Check him doing, go ahead and do the last part, man. I'll just go wait until you say the name and then I'm going to throw it up. How long you go wait, keep calling false start, Joel Adison. I just said you that. There,
Starting point is 00:02:12 okay, all right, there you go. I should have just kept talking to see how long you would have kept going. I was just trying to be, I was trying to get it started. You know what I'm saying? When Joel do that, what he really saying is
Starting point is 00:02:23 who's trying to get on the love boat? Do you remember Dante Carl Pepper? Oh, man, oh man, stop. You're going to get your role. Joe, like the boat, who got seats on the boat? I didn't even think. about, you know, for some reason, I've associated more with Fred Smoot because the craziest stories
Starting point is 00:02:41 from that boat seemed to have been affiliated with Fred Smoot. I feel like just about, I have forgotten all the particular details about the love boat. But we'll get to that, though. We got Joel on because while he hates many things, he loves college football and they got a good college football show. So I wanted to talk some college football with my good friend, Joel. You know what I'm saying? He was just saying that he dropped his, dropped his little man off at pre-K, and he met one of his fans. I did. I did.
Starting point is 00:03:08 So, yeah, I dropped there as I'll tell you, it was his first day of pre-K. And shout out, Danny. He came through the office, and he's like, big fan. And I'm just, I'm here with my kid. It was totally threw me off. I'm like, well, of what?
Starting point is 00:03:21 He's like, you're not, he said, he said, you're not as much of a hater as Bumani says. Oh, boy, but I can't wait for him to find out in real life. I can't wait. Actually, I'm lying. He said, you're, he said, you're a perfect hate.
Starting point is 00:03:34 He said, yeah, perfect. I was going to see how excited you were. I'm just saying, he goes, don't you worry. He's going to get to see you every day. He's going to get you in the border with you grumpy? Oh, yeah. No, no, no. I'm about to be, I'm fired up.
Starting point is 00:03:47 I'm ready to be part of the PTA now. Okay, okay. I see. You got your squad there. It's your crew. You're somebody up there. I am, man. You know what I'm saying.
Starting point is 00:03:55 Hey, look, man, knowing somebody in the front office of the food can't hurt. That's real talk. They ain't going to leave you sitting in the lobby. No, sir. Joe, go, go see. the kids fighting in the cafeteria, they're going to come talk to him immediately, right? That's what it is.
Starting point is 00:04:10 Joe, some somebody saw somebody in there. Yeah, I'm going to have to break it up myself. Looking like Buddy on the street in the wire and half the damn when they was fighting over basketball. Was it Clarence Clements? That was Clarence Clements, if I'm not mistaken. On the East Street bed. Oh, but wait.
Starting point is 00:04:29 Also, was it Jonathan Majors who showed up somewhere was doing? Oh, my God. I don't get me started talking about that, dude. I don't even. Look, man, college football. I feel like we like to talk about when it has happened because the numbers have been on that. But we got Georgia Alabama this week, man.
Starting point is 00:04:46 And it's interesting because Georgia and Alabama historically have not played that much. Right. They played four fewer games than people realize. And I looked it up. And apparently it was because of the Saturday Evenin Post scandal. What? Remember in the Saturday Evening Post where they wrote the article
Starting point is 00:05:02 that accused Bear Bryant and the coach, and I think it was Georgia 10th. of fixing games. Oh, wow. Yeah, and Brian won the lawsuit and everything else. But if I'm not mistaken, you would think Georgia and Alabama being board of schools would play a lot more than they have over the years. And even in recent times, we see them play in the championship games.
Starting point is 00:05:22 But it is not a, it is not really a rivalry. Like Auburn is more Georgia's rival from Alabama. Well, that is a rivalry. That is a rivalry. Like that's a their play every year. The whole reason. and they ran the SEC schedule like they did with the cross-division games was to protect Alabama, Tennessee, and to protect Georgia Auburn
Starting point is 00:05:43 because it's that much of a game. But this is a rivalry that is largely based on the fact that they've been beasts. Right. Really, at this point, it's going on a decade now. I mean, this is really a new rivalry that has formed over the last decade. Once Kirby Smart got Georgia rolling. Yeah, and, you know, that's the part of it also, is the saving Kirby element of it.
Starting point is 00:06:03 And it becomes intriguing because, because this dominant as Georgia has been, is Alabama they can't really do nothing with. I mean, man, even last year when Alabama was not, I mean, I don't think anybody thought they were that good last year, right? And they still beat Georgia in the regular season. Now, of course, the SEC championship games, things have sort of taken shape by then.
Starting point is 00:06:26 And by the end of the year, Bama fans were upset at him. But that Georgia win gave Kalin DeBore a lot more rope and a lot more patience during that regular season, where they did not appear to be very good and had already lost the Florida State who was horrible last year. They did. Which, I mean, that's why Mike Norville is still there
Starting point is 00:06:43 or is it just the fact that they ain't got no money? They broke. They broke. And by the way, good for everybody involved, right? You should ride it out. That's what the buyout. The buyout is supposed to make you ride it out. That's the thing that's amazing about it.
Starting point is 00:06:58 Is it supposed to be an enforcement? They're like, whatever. How much money you need? I'll be right back. $70 million. Yeah, I'll be right back. It never makes sense. Again, I mean, Penn State is finding this out as well.
Starting point is 00:07:09 Like, you know, just sometimes a bad year is just going to have to be a bad year. Back in the day when we, you know, 80s and 90s, the legends, they would have bad years occasionally. They might go five and six, four, and seven. And they were allowed to have had that because they have built up enough credibility. And I'm just sort of shocked at the idea that you can have a really good team for almost 10 years to have had a chance to score at the end of, of the game in the national semi-final with a chance to go to the championship game and just get fired next year because things fell out
Starting point is 00:07:41 of control. They ain't like them. Yeah. Because they just... Now, to be fair to them, though, on the money, what they were paying him is offset by Virginia Tech. Like, theirs was a little bit... They didn't. Unless you had to pay Brian Kelly all that money at one time, didn't they? Yeah, I mean, they did.
Starting point is 00:07:56 That's... That was... He wasn't going to leave. He was going to call... He was going to call problems for them. He's like, you don't give me my money. Right. Right. I said, bring me my money. Bring me my money. He wanted that. Now, Caleb DeBoer, look, you talk about he got himself a little more rope.
Starting point is 00:08:12 Hey, man, all those all just, they just pay their loans at that job. Right? Like, nobody ever has any rope. Look, Bear Bryant, now granted, he died right after, but Bear Bryant quit after that one bad year. I mean, he was like, hey, they didn't care. I mean, the people there are not known for being reasonable about this. but I actually thought watching them play against Mississippi State.
Starting point is 00:08:37 I was like, oh, this is the best team they've had since maybe the team that lost in the semifinal to Michigan a few years ago. I mean, I think it might be better than that one because I don't think that team was that good. That was the last saving team, right? That's right. Was Bryce on that team? No, no, no, no, no, no, no, Bryce is gone.
Starting point is 00:08:53 That was, uh, I'm pretty sure Mill Roe was a quarterback that team. It was, it was Miller. That was the year they benched Mill Roe. That's right. Remember, basically, they'll never say this officially, but the way it progressed seemed pretty obvious. The saving was like, all right, I got to get these white folks to calm down. I'm going to put this white dude out here,
Starting point is 00:09:13 and they're going to see why it is that we're sticking with what they call a running back. Right? That's why we're going to do that. Now, this is the thing, and part of why I brought up this game is I was talking to a good friend of mine who was a big Alabama fan. And as you might expect, he is over the moon about Keeling Russell. Oh, my God. And here's what he says to me.
Starting point is 00:09:38 He's like he's got Bryce's brain with Milrose legs. We've never had anything like that before, to which I had to explain to him. Nobody's had anything like that before. McShay is out here talking about Russell would be a 99 grade. This appears to be the best quarterback that they've had says Joe Nameth. Man, so I was wondering, so we're already elevating them over Tua, already, obviously, Jaylon. So let me ask you this about post-Nameath Stabler, right, that running guys.
Starting point is 00:10:13 Let's just go into this modern era of Alabama football. Mm-hmm. He's definitely the most talented. Oh, by far. He's definitely the one that checks the most boxes. Athleticism, size, arm strength, processing, all of that stuff, right? Tua is if everything is exactly what he thought it was going to be off the line of scrimmage, you got this.
Starting point is 00:10:35 The other guys, I don't even think, are in the discussion to be honest. Not at all. Well, Tua was a true five star, but I don't know if he was as highly rated a five stars. No, no, no, no, no, no, he was not. Yeah. Keel and Russell is a whole different. Yeah, they've never had anybody this talented because they've never were able to recruit anybody this good to play in the offense. Hold on, hold on, but to be fair, they ever recruit anybody this talented?
Starting point is 00:10:56 because how many people this talented have their business? I mean, really, I guess. Are you surprised? Because the thing is, I knew Keel and Russell was talented. And somebody last year, who was it last year that when they lost the Florida State? And they were like, I don't know why they don't play the freshman. And I was like, really, already? But apparently people have known that this kid was as good as that.
Starting point is 00:11:19 They just wanted to let him sit for a year, which is, you know, that makes a lot of sense to me. If you're going to have them for four, you know, if you feel like you. If you feel like you have a guy, right? Yeah. I mean, they won a national championship with Mack Jones and Bryce Young was right behind him. That's right. Right. That's right.
Starting point is 00:11:33 They feel like, and just to be clear, Tua was rivals number 53 player. Number 53? Okay. I didn't realize he was that low. Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, no, no. Russell, Russell came in there one of them ones. You know, what's interesting about Russell to me is because I've always been really skeptical of the recruits that play on loaded teams, right?
Starting point is 00:11:55 Because I'm like, it's so easy. Like you've got all the talent. Nobody is ever touching you. It's like USC quarterbacks. Like the USC quarterbacks. So Keelan Russell is from Duncanville for people that don't know Dunkerville. And if you listen to this show, you probably know what Dunkinville is, to be honest. But it's a suburban power just outside of Dallas.
Starting point is 00:12:11 It's like for people that are familiar with the, not familiar with the area. It kind of is what Dallas Carter used to be in terms of just a bunch of time, a wave of talent. They're always, you know, competing for state championships. And his team did win a state championship his senior year. And, I mean, again, people have seen the guys he played with his junior year. They're like 10 FBS starters. And a couple of dudes are like cold. Colin Simmons.
Starting point is 00:12:36 Yeah. Yeah, Colin Simmons on that team. Yeah, if I say it's cold. But I think even his receivers were cold like that, right? Yeah, Decorian Moore, Cade and Durham. Like, I mean, just a bunch of people that have started games at FBS. He was the pilot of that team. So I'm always like, how do you know that he's actually good?
Starting point is 00:12:53 Because he's never actually endured any real. friction in the pocket but evidently he the one and you pointed out though my cause for skepticism when it comes to him you just said it oh me from Dallas oh I just got it as a general rule do you consider Duncanville Dallas for purposes of this discussion okay all right yes I do it because I feel like I was a little bold Fort Worth which is a different set of concerns But, like, yeah, Catherine Dallas, in fact, now that I think about it,
Starting point is 00:13:29 let me look up what kind of haircut this boy got. Oh, yeah, Keele. Yeah, because, like, he from Dallas, anything is on the board. You understand what I'm saying? Oh, yeah, well.
Starting point is 00:13:37 No, he's right. He's straight. He ain't got a shag. You know, it's interesting. I bet he's had one before, though. He ain't never, I just kind of assumed that he would have, you know,
Starting point is 00:13:46 the low-cut fade or whatever. People just kids just don't have that, man. They don't have the Martin Luther King. You know? And I'm trying to figure out, man, how they got all this time for all this. brading.
Starting point is 00:13:55 Brayton? Brayden. Did you have a braids run? Of course not. No. I mean, of course not. Why you say that? I had one.
Starting point is 00:14:01 I didn't know. I just, I don't. I mean, if you did, that's fine, but you said that. I mean,
Starting point is 00:14:05 I don't, I'm not going to lie. I caught a whiff of anti-blackness. No, I don't have a face that looks like I can. I don't, I don't think I have a look that would support a braids look, man. Brother,
Starting point is 00:14:15 to be fair, when it was running, that didn't stop me or nobody else, right? Like you just, I didn't know, I just asked if you had given it a try, but I forgot some of us went to private school. Anyway. All right.
Starting point is 00:14:28 Okay. I mean, what is this? I mean, is Park Atlanta a public school? Okay. I will take my student body and put it next to the straight Jesuit High School's body. You get to, yeah, okay. Anyway.
Starting point is 00:14:45 And I forgot what I was saying. You were talking about he from Dallas. He probably had a shag before. Yeah, yeah, probably. I got a shagging. I can't got no shag anymore. But anyway, I think this is going to be a gang because Georgia's been blowing everybody's doors off this year.
Starting point is 00:14:57 We don't know any. That's the thing. We don't, we know a little bit of something about Alabama because they've actually played two tough games on the road, even though they're not teams that you typically think of as good. Like that Kentucky game, that was sort of a, they could have got jumped into SEC player. Kentucky was hyped for that game.
Starting point is 00:15:14 And they struggled early and they came through it and pulled away. The same deal with Mississippi State. Mississippi State was undefeated. They've got a quarterback who, I mean, I wouldn't take Keel and Russell over Camaro Taylor. Put a pin in that. We go get back. Yeah, but he's a dog. And they went in there, handled that, a situation where they said it probably was about as, you know,
Starting point is 00:15:34 a bigger game in Starkville as there being since Dak Prescott was there. So Alabama has actually had some moments of doubt and being whatever. Georgia is my understanding is that Georgia is one of three teams that is not trailed for a second this year. Yeah. I think they've won all their games by something like 40, 50 points per? Yeah. What are we supposed to do? How are we actually supposed to know that good?
Starting point is 00:15:56 I mean, we get a sense that they're good. But how do we know that they're good? I mean, I will just say that the argument is we can't tell how good they are because they've looked so good. That's the thing is we, they should have been tested by now. But Oklahoma just couldn't, I guess. Well, Oklahoma was down a gang of dudes for that game. Yeah. For whatever it's worth.
Starting point is 00:16:17 I don't know. I mean, we'll get to them too. But they were down a gang of dudes for that gang. Well, the thing is they, I mean, it really fell apart for them. They were driving. They were down 14 to zip. And then John Mateer had that weird throw. The ball slipped out his hand.
Starting point is 00:16:31 And Chris Cole picked the ball up. That is the fastest linebacker I've ever seen in my life. Chris Cole, when he to return that fumble against OU. So, yeah, Georgia, man, they've got the dogs. I mean, this looks like a typical Georgia team. It looks like the best, one of the. best possible versions of the Georgia you're going to get. But they got to play somebody. We got to see, you know, Alabama could be that. I tell you who I know ain't never had no
Starting point is 00:16:56 braids. You can just say this every year. The quarterback at Georgia, it don't matter who it is. It don't matter what year. That motherfucker ain't had no braids and not even when they went to Jamaica. Like, no matter what it is, that boy, what, is it still gutter Stockton? Yeah, gutter stockton. Like that's one thing about it. It ain't just enough for Georgia to have one of them boys as they quarterback. they all got to have a Georgia quarterback name too. Oh, well, Georgia quarterback. I mean, Trump was excited to see Gunner Stockton a little bit earlier.
Starting point is 00:17:23 Apparently Trump was excited to see the Baltimore Ravens too. I mean, hey, man. I mean, Lamar, man, whatever. But, yeah, I mean, they don't, the one guy that they've had that broke, you know, that would broke the mold, he had to leave after a year because of racism concerns. Well, yeah, they had him and they had the one that didn't turn out to be good. What was his name? Oh, DeWan Mathis.
Starting point is 00:17:45 Yes. Duwine Mathis. That's right. That's right. And where, you know, and Georgia did offer Juju Lewis. Now, I think Juju was committed to SC
Starting point is 00:17:53 when he ended up going to Colorado. But I think Kirby Smartstein is that he doesn't like having to recruit five-star quarterbacks. That's allegedly what the issue is because, you know, somebody's going to come in and swoop you. It's a kind of competitive recruited market that he feels that be better spent on the rest of the roster. And then you can put in somebody like going to stock them. They've been recruiting the same quarterback over and over.
Starting point is 00:18:15 Jake Frong. 30-something years. With the DJ Shockley, he had to sit for four years before he got his opportunity. Quincy Carter. They had Quincy Carter there for a year. So, yeah, he cuts into the 30. We'll call it just 20. Okay, that's 30.
Starting point is 00:18:31 But also, I mean, I'm trying to think. I mean, Matt Stafford, that's a whole different thing. I mean, you do that. Right? You do that. You got to, you know. You do that. You do that.
Starting point is 00:18:43 It was an underwhelming tenure, but you do that. boy, they're going to get bad to be about that, but they're good. I mean, they were good, but they didn't do what they're doing now. Well, they had that thing also where the one year that was their best year, they did not win, they were top five, but they did not win the conference. Was that a game that they lost to Alabama? I think they lost that game. They were going to the end zone.
Starting point is 00:19:04 They had two embarrassing losses in 07. Tennessee smoked them. And I forget who else it was, but they had these two bad losses. But they also had the great win, which was. the year that they went and stunted off Florida in the end zone. And Florida never recovered. That was great. And then the next year, Florida blew their doors off and called tie mouths at the end of it to twist the knife.
Starting point is 00:19:32 I love college football. I mean, that's what I said. I mean, that's just the great part about it, man. I mean, again, back then, people remembered that shit, man. They lived or died for the chance to embarrass their arrival. It's a little different now, but still, these boys get caught up in it. no matter what, because the thing is with these rivalries, the kids actually know each other now.
Starting point is 00:19:50 Back in the day, when I was playing football, man, you knew people on your side of town. It was, like, interesting to see people on the other side of town. So now they, when they're playing against each other, part of the rivalries that you might have got me at, you know, Nike camp or the USA All-American game, but I'm going to get you now. So, yeah.
Starting point is 00:20:08 All right. Now, Texas, Oklahoma, man, is also this weekend. You must be feeling pretty good about it. about your team, man, huh? Pretty good. They got, how much are your boys favorite by? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:20:23 I don't root for that team anymore. Okay, my bad. Oh, my bad. Why you keep doing this? You said that. You said that. Yeah, how long have I been saying it, Joel? It's only been six years.
Starting point is 00:20:33 The favorite is set by seven and a half points, man. That line seven. Joel so bad at this, it's so desperate to try to get a leg up that the best he got is. I'm going to keep saying you root for this team that you said you stopped rooting for. Obviously, obviously it bothers you. I'm going to stop. I'm going to keep saying it until it stops. Just because you're so whack.
Starting point is 00:20:49 No, man. Well, you know my other, you know my other reason it bothers me. And it makes me like think less of you as a person. No, what? It's because you know why I stopped doing this. Oh, well. Yeah, I mean, you know. You know why I stopped doing this.
Starting point is 00:21:04 And the least you could do is show a little respect for that fact. I mean, okay, sure. All right. I mean, you know, I'm glad. There's a lot of people that have gotten mad at me about pointing this out over and over again. And they haven't said the thing against it. So I will at least give you credit for that. That was a little bit too far.
Starting point is 00:21:21 No, you don't give me any credit for that. That's the point of what we're saying. Yeah, well, I mean, you know, I just, you know, just needling you a little bit, brother. I know, and you just not good at it. You can't come up with that. No, you're sensitive after this baby face week you've had, and you won't, you know what I'm saying?
Starting point is 00:21:37 I didn't try to hurt you. I do this to you every time you bring this bullshit up. That ain't got nothing to do with no baby face. Okay. All right, all right. So your boy is the long horn. But anyway, see if you agree with me on this. I still think this is going to be a close game.
Starting point is 00:21:52 Yeah, it's always on the board. I wouldn't guarantee it. But, I mean, we just watch, let's say, we watch Georgia smoke them. Like, I don't think they're going to be down all those dudes this game. Anything's on the board with this game because anything's on the board with this game. However, there is no question which one of these teams has the most talent. Oh, it's not even close. I mean, to be fair, I don't know how close it is.
Starting point is 00:22:13 just about anybody else. That's, you know, the thing that's shocking because, I mean, OU for most of the last generation has been the better program, right? Like Texas has had some moments. I mean, for post-integration, they've been the better program. Well, that, that too, that too, that too. But all of a sudden, just in the last two to three years, it just feels like, I mean, this is credit to Steve Sarkesian and his general manager,
Starting point is 00:22:36 who is Brandon Harris, one of Bojia City's own. Oh, LSU Brandon Harris? Yes, North Carolina, Brandon. Harris, uh-huh, from, from Bojah Parkway. He's the general manager there. And so for whatever reason, they've just been able to assemble an incredible amount of talent relative to OU. And I'm just, if you're an OU fan, you have to be looking at that, like, why we have the guy that used to do the senior ball. You know, that was the, that was the pitch for our general manager. What is wrong? Why don't we have the kind of talent the Texas guy? Why don't we have a Hollywood smothers?
Starting point is 00:23:10 You know, they got Hollywood smothers and Relique Brown. Okay. Why do we have Relique Brown? Well, part of why they used to be able to compete on talent, and we know this is they would do is that they would take that the other guys wouldn't take for whatever happens to me. Oh, everybody, I'm trying the best way to put this. I think the best way to put this.
Starting point is 00:23:30 I say this, this is the case in a lot of Big 12 games, is that everybody at Texas got an offer from Texas. Uh-huh. And not everybody at, We'll call it for this discussion, Texas Tech. How many guys on Texas Tech's roster got an offer from Texas in giving years at other points? How many of those guys that are on those other teams
Starting point is 00:23:49 that they had gotten an office in Texas would have gone to Texas? You might have a handful and they might have not been committable offers. Correct, right? Yeah. Right. But Oklahoma, Texas is always fishing from a different pool, right? Yeah. Now, when it gets like to the super top, especially in the northern part of the state,
Starting point is 00:24:05 oh, you had a chance, right? But like, oh, you couldn't recruit in Houston. It's eight hours away by car. It's just not, you know, there would be guys every now and then. I don't want to quit. You have your Quentin Griffins. Of course, it was Burton. Right, right.
Starting point is 00:24:17 So it's some of them. But it's always easier recruiting at Texas than it was at Oklahoma. And what you would hope for in the New World Order, now that Oklahoma can pay people out in the open. You know, that it's just like, okay, my money versus your money. But your money not messing with that Texas money. Did you see when the Tyson chicken dude at Arkansas, you see that quote from him? I did see that quote from him. So Tyson chicken that you see in your stores,
Starting point is 00:24:41 that's the money, a lot of the money behind Arkansas football. And he was at the touchdown club in Little Rock, and they asked him about doing for Arkansas what Cody Campbell has done for Texas Tech. And his response was, he got oil, I got chickens. It's not the same, right? We're not talking about the same kind of money. OU's not talking about,
Starting point is 00:25:00 OU is now, to me, like, Arkansas, like, boy, I sure wish we could go back to the Big 12 for the good old days. Oh, yeah. I mean, the thing is, they had to go to the SEC because, I mean, they could not afford to be left behind. They had to go. They would not be able to keep getting players. It had gotten so hard for both of them to get players.
Starting point is 00:25:17 Right. And so the thing is now it's just, I mean, Lincoln Riley got out ahead of this. And it's understandable. OU for the most part is never going to, in the Big 12, they were all pretty much talented, more talented than everybody else with the exception of Texas in any given year. Now in the SEC, are they even, do you even think they're, top half program in terms of like overall raw talent in terms when you add transfer you know you got Georgia Texas LSU you're talking about just like all things created equal yeah um Bama so this is what I
Starting point is 00:25:50 would say top half is well top half is it's to not be top half would be number nine and I don't think I can go that far down where Oklahoma would get their comparative advantage over Texas was the ability to truly recruit nationwide and especially going into going into California, and they would go get a lot of dudes out of Atlanta. And Florida. They got a little Florida guys too. Yeah, they would do some of that. But that's where they would have their chance where Texas wasn't doing any of that.
Starting point is 00:26:19 Well, now Texas is doing that, right? Like now Texas is going to get those guys. I still feel like relative to a lot of the SEC, because Georgia does a lot of California work now, Oklahoma still should be able to go to some of those places that they had been able to go to, especially when you still have like a downish USC, a down UCLA. It's still possible with them. Now, what's going to be interesting is they had the best athletic director in the country for two decades,
Starting point is 00:26:43 and they don't have that anymore. Yeah, it's true. They have a middle of the road coat, a very good defensive coordinator that they hired in large part because they didn't expect to be looking for a coach. And so they got a Stoops guy, basically. Yeah. To kind of, you know, to kind of keep the party going. But that's a place historically where the right coach has been able to make it happen and they don't have the right coach.
Starting point is 00:27:03 I don't have a right coach. I don't think. I mean, and the thing is we're saying the right coach hasn't been able to make it happen. They were in the playoffs last year. They weren't. And that's where it gets to be fun with them. They are like a lesser version of Nebraska where they're going to have to recalibrate what success is. Wow.
Starting point is 00:27:17 A lesser? Oh, you mean in terms of the... I mean lesser in the sense that they're not going to fall like Nebraska has fallen. Of course. Thank you for allowing me to clarify that before my mama ran up on me. Like, imagine explaining to a young person now. Nebraska. You know what that'd be like telling people you don't know this boy, but Cleveland.
Starting point is 00:27:37 Boy, the factory. Detroit. Oh, yeah, man. We were making them cars, boy. It was good. You could live a good life in Detroit. You know what I said? A good job in a home and a pension. Brothers had money.
Starting point is 00:27:50 They, man, they're coming back with catalogs and furrows and the whole nine. Yeah. Nebraska ain't got that no more. But I was thinking, we're going to talk about this later. I'm certain too. But Nebraska and Colorado, a couple of those states, you got to go over two states to get to them, to get to players. And I mean, money should level that out a little bit, but it does matter your proximity to athletes still.
Starting point is 00:28:14 Yeah. Far is still far, home is still home. Yep. Like it still matters on levels. It is easier to recruit out of state than it's ever been. Far is still far. Home is still home. But there was a part of that Texarkal homie game that I want to ask you about. And I think I told you a little bit about what I would ask you about with this.

All right. Hater in the house, Joel Anderson. We are back. Let's throw it up, darn.
Starting point is 00:36:29 That's all right. You don't have to do that. I can pump my own self up. We know you will, Joe. We know you will. So this is the last Arch Manning year, right? You don't think Arch is coming back for. a five, do we?
Starting point is 00:36:42 Ah, shit, man. I think he might have to. So it's been interesting because by the end of last year, the people that I trust that watched the film were saying he was starting to look like the dude that people thought that he could be. I haven't heard anybody say that this year. And
Starting point is 00:36:57 he is not what people would expect from him. They have to remember his daddy was the wide receiver. He is a great athlete that does not currently appear to be but so great of a quarterback. I'm not exactly sure why Archie was so certain that Sark was the guy to do this, but they did.
Starting point is 00:37:16 Now we look up. Where does he rank in the SEC? I say fourth at best. So that means you have Keelan or Camaro. Yeah, Camaro Taylor, Keel and Trinidad Chambliss. Oh, of course. Yeah, Trinidad, who is number one. I mean, if you needed to win a game today, right? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:37:35 Yeah. I mean, he's definitely not better than those three guys. And I don't think anybody would take him over those guys. No. Yeah. No. This wasn't supposed to be that. Like, I think he's better than Sam Levitt.
Starting point is 00:37:47 Oh, yeah. Yeah. That's good. Ryers over here looking like a pez dispenser. He nodding so hard about that. We've seen the Sam Levitt thing now. We kind of got to sit for what it's going to look like. It's an experience.
Starting point is 00:37:59 Yeah, it's like, all right, cool. Would you take him over Lenore Sellers? Do you think of Lenore Sellers is totally damaged goods now? That's where it gets interesting because I don't know what to make of that. you know what I mean like I was not as high on him when everybody was high but I put it like this I think Arch is demonstrated a higher floor that's sad they're about to run they probably go run Bemer out of it it was all good it was really all good just a little while ago I mean man
Starting point is 00:38:26 South Carolina ain't asking for much but you can't be bad no no but I mean the response to that is why should they be good that's a terrible job man it's just interesting because I you've I'm sure you've been to Columbus I've never been to Clemson, and people keep telling me that Clemson is, like, beautiful, that it's actually a really nice college town. Columbia, brough. That's the thing, they've got the fan support, man. That's Williams, Bryce State, that thing goes hard.
Starting point is 00:38:56 They show up when they're bad. Yes. But, yeah, Columbia, dog. Here's the problem with a school like South Carolina. I'm curious what you think about this. Uh-huh. So, like, what's good enough? I don't have an answer for what's good enough at South Carolina.
Starting point is 00:39:13 Like Spurrier had that run where they managed to have, what, Stefan Gilmore, Jadavion Clowney, Marcus Lattimore, come out of the state at the same time, and they were able to keep them all. Right. And they put up results better than they ever have all time at that school. That's never going to happen again. They're never going to have a run of like three straight double-digit win seasons,
Starting point is 00:39:33 I think it was. Oh, no. I mean, the thing is you can envision a scenario in which, You know, one year every four or five, they win 10 to 11 games. Oh, I can't see that at all. Oh, really? You don't think they could do that. 10 to what?
Starting point is 00:39:46 Well, I don't know. What if Lenore Sellers lived up to? What if Lenore Sellers and Dylan Stewart, all these guys lived up to their potential? You know what? I guess the trick bag on that is because schedules are so variant now that, yeah. Yeah. Yeah, it's possible. I guess, like when you put it in those terms, but that's.
Starting point is 00:40:03 A&M with A&M just lost one game last year in the regular season. Yeah, but pay in the pipe. for that now, aren't they? It changed. They switched up on. They're in the Piper now. But a place like South Carolina, if you win eight games,
Starting point is 00:40:18 say you win eight games every year for ten years, you're not going to get ten years, even though eight games every year is be pretty good for South Carolina. Or like, how about maybe this is the better metric? How many SEC games do you have to win, call it a five-year period?
Starting point is 00:40:35 Do you have to win, is 15 SEC wins, three years? Four a year? Is that enough? They play nine games now. Okay. Five and four. Can you can you, it's five and four. I mean, because I'm trying to think.
Starting point is 00:40:47 Four every year is it. It's a lot to ask of South Carolina while also probably being what South Carolina could ask for. Like being as good as the average, one could make the fair point is not enough to keep your job. They want somebody exceptional. Now, of course, the problem is if I am exceptional in doing this job at South Carolina, guess what I'm going to do? Probably going to have to. Why would I keep doing this? Catch that good job.
Starting point is 00:41:13 I mean, the thing that really messes up South Carolina, particularly now or schools in that half of it, is that every now and again, Vandy gets serious of football. Yeah. Kentucky appears to be serious of football right now, right? And so now, and so South Carolina's fans can see,
Starting point is 00:41:30 man, in one year, Kentucky has already got us. Yeah. You know, so he can't stay under those circumstances. Well, don't forget the one that looms over everybody and I was thinking about this when we were talking about Oklahoma. I was around the ACC that year that Wake Forest won the ACC. Oh, yeah. And that led to wholesale changes all around the conference because if Wake Forest could win,
Starting point is 00:41:56 and Wake Forest has something like 3,500 students at the top. If Wake Forest can win, nobody has any excuse. It really is what made Duke football become something different because they were just, every story that you had, none of them hold anymore if Wade Forrest could win the ACC. Indiana won a national championship. That's on everybody now.
Starting point is 00:42:19 That's, I saw somebody say this. I don't know if it was Stephen Godfrey or somebody else. They were talking about Signetti derangement syndrome. Because now everybody, and the thing is, it is sort of, it's true in a long shot sense that if Indiana can do it, anybody. can do it, right? But it's kind of like, I don't know, man, Chris Signetti might be the best coach ever. Right. You know, right. He got to bring his whole team over that was really good on
Starting point is 00:42:46 But they were from James. They were still the James Madison team. I mean, that's the thing, man. Yeah. And it's not like they had like four, four first rounders or anything. Like that was Ohio State. And they beat Ohio State. Yo, there's an argument by the way, the more that passes and the more that happens. And despite all of. wins. The people who come from the outside and look at the way people talk about Ryan Day and they're like, how much more do you want? And the answer is a little more. He is not making us believe at all. I could totally understand being like, so I think they had like five or five of the first 10 or 11 picks or something like that last year and being and not not even getting to the semifinal.
Starting point is 00:43:31 Hold on. Hold on. And them boys are beast in the Arvill Reese is in the NFL. Oh, he's cold. ball sunny styles is a beast he's cold and by the way there's a guy on this team that's better than all of those guys nuts and he's still there yeah yeah yeah jeremiah smith is in the two-man class for me and my recollection i call it a three-man class of uh peter warwick randy moss and larry fish gerald in terms of just outright indisputable college football receiver greatness like calvin johns is maybe in that room. That's how good these guys are that we're talking about here.
Starting point is 00:44:10 Jeremiah Smith is there. Oh, I've already said that I think Jeremiah Smith is the best receiver in college football history. I know what those years was in Division I, AA, but the Randy Balls show is still. So this, the only thing that made, so I heard Danny Connell say this on the cover three podcast because they asked him, because he, Randy, and he got to throw to Randy when Randy He was at Florida State before he, you know, flunked a drug test and had to go to Marshall.
Starting point is 00:44:39 Okay. Um, but they asked him. They were like, what do you think? And he was like, oh, no. You know, it's called. And to me, the idea that he was open to it, open to the question, I mean, that's, I mean, that kind of says it all about how good he is, man, for people that don't remember Randy Moss, because Randy Moss was crazy.
Starting point is 00:45:00 I would just make this point in that year that he talks about. So for those who don't know how this went, Moss got arrested in high school. for a fight and the condition he was supposed to go to Notre Dame they found a way to get out of letting them in. Lou Homes called Bobby Bowden and was like, hey, I got somebody for you. A phone call that I never would have made. I'd have called, I'd have called, what's his name, Billy Joe? I'd have called Kim Hilton.
Starting point is 00:45:30 I'd have called the HBCUs. Yeah, right. I'd have called all kinds of people. I'd have called Marshall. There's no way in the world I would have called Florida State. But anyway, he called Florida. Good on you, Lou Holtz, right? He called Florida.
Starting point is 00:45:42 It also tells you that it was not Lou Holtz's idea to not let that boy in. I don't know what Randy Bonds would have had to do. Randy Bonds would have to set that white boy on fire for Lou Holtz to be like he can't come here. I mean, given what Luholtz has been set behind, bro, he know he wanted him so bad. He wanted him so bad. He wanted him so bad. But anyway, he goes to Florida State the condition was that he had to red shirt. which interesting because they don't red shirt guys like that anymore but he said the condition was he had to red shirt and in the research i've done on this which is extensive just for those who don't know me that's right um he got a touchdown in every practice or scrimmage that they had
Starting point is 00:46:22 oh hold up for the 1995 florida state seminars right i mean the thing is man it's just crazy when you say 1995 because when we were kids that would have been some saying the 1965. It would have. So they don't, so they don't understand the kids, I promise you. Florida State was that school, bro.
Starting point is 00:46:42 Like they, I mean, the talent at Florida State in the early to mid-90s. I mean, who compares? Late 80s, Miami, 70s,
Starting point is 00:46:51 USC, which I contend is kind of the original Miami. Yeah, right. Yeah. Right. Because they all,
Starting point is 00:46:57 all these great migration boys and they far away from everywhere. We just going, we just going to keep them here. Lock up here. That's right. about this in 95 Florida State. The greatest pair of wide receivers ever
Starting point is 00:47:07 might have been the 1995 practice squad at Florida State. Oh, man. Because Peter Warwick was on there. He was redshirting the same year. How cold was your team that you could redshirt Peter Warwick? I mean, that's crazy, dog.
Starting point is 00:47:22 I mean, it really is. Well, actually, no, no, no. No, yeah, he was, 96. Yeah, he was redshirting that year. They had all these people on that team, and you know who else they had on that team that year? Warwick done. A junior warring done.
Starting point is 00:47:35 Yeah. It's just like that's not, that is an absurd amount of time. They were so loaded. They were so loaded. It was so loaded. And Randy Moss walked in and you said it. People were like, oh, he turned heads in Florida State. He's so good that for my money, the best college football team I have ever seen is 1995, Nebraska.
Starting point is 00:47:59 It becomes difficult to compare to them because they, they were running, you could still get away, but run an out formation option, like, as your scheme at the time, right? So how do you compare that after you've seen 2019 LSU and what they could do? I know why it could be tough for somebody to go back and look at 95 Nebraska and get, like, what the big deal was. But Randy Moss was so good. And so people understand that is a close to a consensus opinion up until we got
Starting point is 00:48:27 to these modern times about 95 Nebraska. And I think most of us believe that a Florida state here at Randy Moss, that they would have won that national championship. You think so, wait, you think it's consensus that 95 Nebraska's better than 2001 Miami too? I think they're close with, here's what I would say about that. You could argue about the talent of 2001 Miami. But in terms of how good the actual team was that went on the field, yeah.
Starting point is 00:48:52 That's the, go, go ask Spencer about what they did to Florida. Oh, man. That's a championship game. That game was, I mean, look, look. I just have to admit it. I went. That was about a laffer on the scale of TCU, Georgia. Except it was Florida.
Starting point is 00:49:10 Except it was Florida. Like that's not, that did not happen to Florida then either. No. So, man, who, so was that 95? I'm trying to remember if this is the team with not just Lawrence Phillips, but Armine Green. It was the year that Lawrence Phillips beat his girlfriend up and they put him off the team. And then Amon Green was a true freshman. It became the starter.
Starting point is 00:49:31 and then Tom Osborne, as someone once referred to Mark Jackson, Tom Osborne, fake-ass man of God, then brought Lawrence Phillips back for this game where they clearly did not need him. They didn't need him. But he was still, I mean, he was cold in that game, Doug. I mean, I think he had over 100, so we had also, of course, Tommy Frazier,
Starting point is 00:49:57 who we haven't mentioned. Argument for greatest college quarterback of all time. Yeah, absolutely. and people, you had to be there, kids. Yeah. The Mike Minter, the Peter brothers. Yes. Joel McAvica.
Starting point is 00:50:10 Yes. Jared Tomich. Yes. I think Michael Booker was playing corner on that squad. Yeah. Yep. Aaron Graham. Mm-hmm.
Starting point is 00:50:18 I mean, they had dudes, man. They had dudes. And they had a weightlifting situation that was. It was ahead of his time. It was ahead of his time. It was. It really was. I mean, I mean, the thing is, eventually people got hip to it.
Starting point is 00:50:37 And that kind of, you know, narrowed the margins. And then it was like. And also they went from Big 8 admission standards to Big 12 admission standards. Yeah, fair point. One of the big things when Texas made the Big 12 thing happen was they wanted to up the admission standards because it's a lot easier to win with higher admission standards when you're recruiting Texas. Right.
Starting point is 00:50:56 Then it is when you're trying to convince people to go to Nebraska. Right. Right. I mean, Nebraska was kind of like, like if West Virginia could have gotten the talent in Nebraska, that's kind of what Nebraska was. Yeah. You know? Like, I'll never forget this. You remember when Bob Stoves came close to taking that Notre Dame job that time?
Starting point is 00:51:14 And his big holdup was he went in there like, so here's what I'm going to need. I'm going to need some Jukos. And they were like, you're going to need some what? It's like some Jukos. I thought y'all was trying to win because you could get Jukos in OU. Like, that's the thing. Texas wasn't taking Jukos. No.
Starting point is 00:51:29 Oh, you was like, we don't turn good plays. players down. I mean, that's, I mean, that was, I mean, that was always what gave them the advantage. Yeah, right. Good players, I mean, when that meant something different in the 1970s. An institutional commitment to winning. Yes. It's the best way to.
Starting point is 00:51:46 Not everybody. Texas has never really had a super duper institutional commitment to winning. It's a quiet institution of commitment to racism. But a true institutional commitment to winning, not nearly as much. Oh, yeah. No, I mean, they, I mean, again, people are going to get mad at me for saying this. It is a legendarily racist school. And not just because of, you know, because every flagship school is.
Starting point is 00:52:11 No, no, no, no. They're in perpetuating racism. They were at the vanguard. They were at the cutting edge of racism. The first school to do standardized testing because it would keep the blacks out. I mean, bro, I told Van didn't believe this, I think, what I told him this. I was like, the reason TSU has a. law school is because they did not want to admit one black man
Starting point is 00:52:34 into their law school. It was separate, it was separate but equal. And so they were like, okay, well, let's open another one. How about that'll solve the that'll solve the thing. No, no, no, no. So the thing is Joel, Joe's anti-Texist thing is understandable because this is that people don't understand. This is a different era when black people did not root for the local teams. Like in many cases, right? Because they, these are actually the people that are spitting on you, right? The ones that are closer to you. So you go pick, racist from other states to decide that you would
Starting point is 00:53:03 rule for. I got to root for Texas in part because the dude I went to high school with wound up playing for them. So then it carries over into that, right? But no, historically speaking, the difference between Oklahoma and Texas the last 50, 60 years is Oklahoma decided to do its racism different. Right. Right. They're going to get in the way of some football.
Starting point is 00:53:24 No, no, no circumstance whatsoever. The only thing that really stopped them was when their backup quarterback got busted in a federal drug case. Well, he wasn't a backup. Yeah, he was the backup and he was on the cover. Hold on. Hold on. No, he was the starter by then. Yeah, Charles Thompson?
Starting point is 00:53:45 Yeah, because Holloway is 85 through 88. And this was January 89. In fact, I think Thompson had gotten the job. But either way, their quarterback was on the cover of Sports Illustrated in an orange jumpsuit. Orange jumpsuit. That's when there was like, all right, we have to do something about it, and then they get Gary Gibbs and whatever else. But you know what, though, it ain't even Gibbs' fault.
Starting point is 00:54:06 What happened was they got a TV ban, and they suffered a serious probation. At the time that Colorado was rising, right? Because there used to be Oklahoma and the Seven Dwarves is what they used to call the Big Eight. And then Nebraska got up to the level, and then Nebraska developed a different institutional commitment. to winning than it had previously. You ever heard the all-time Bobby Bowden quote where they went up there and they beat Michigan
Starting point is 00:54:35 and they asked what the difference was? And I have to find it, but I've been told this. I hope I'm not totally wrong. But he said, well, our team has guys named Johnson and Williams. Their team has guys name Noewinsky. Just flat out.
Starting point is 00:54:56 Just flat out said it, but you could look through the 80s. In the 80s is Nebraska playing Florida schools in bowl games and just getting outrun. And they were like, no, we're not. Not anymore. Not anymore. We have figured out what the problem is.
Starting point is 00:55:12 We're going to, we got it. It was very Sam-Bab-Cunninghamish with them. What the issue is that after a while, all the other SEC schools woke up to it too, though. Because it's like, Florida, not everybody in SEC had the same commitment to winning that Alabama and Florida did for a time. They were ahead of their game.
Starting point is 00:55:32 And then, you know, I mean, I always think one of the landmark recruits that changed it across the south was Kevin Falk going to LSU. That's the beginning. Yeah, where it's just like LSU is getting the people they're supposed to. Because before, Ward done, it's from Baton Rouge.
Starting point is 00:55:48 Yes. You know what I'm saying? That's like today he would be, that's LSU almost pretty much guaranteed. There's no chance that he goes anywhere else. Yeah, yeah. I think is Ed Reed from the Baton Rouge area? Erie's from New Orleans. I think he's from Laplace.
Starting point is 00:56:03 Laplace? Okay. Yeah, which I think is more New Orleans than Baton Rouge. Yeah, but I mean, those are guys that should have been going there. And then eventually when Kevin Falk went and I think Marcus Spears is part of that class and he's talking about. No, no, no. Mark Spears is in the O-1 class. Is it an O-1 class?
Starting point is 00:56:17 Yeah, he talks about it. He's a Sabin guy. Like Sabin is to LSU as Mac Brown is to Texas as being the first coach to be like, hey, man, we ain't even going to be talking about this. We're going to go get doing. is because De Nardo was the first one. De Nardo is the one that's getting like Booger McFarland and Kevin Falk. And for those, I always forget how to say it.
Starting point is 00:56:34 Ed Reed is not from Laplace. He's from, it starts with a D. Destrand. There we go. Thank you, Ryan. Ryan had to pop up on that one. But Kevin Falk, for those who don't know the magnitude of Kevin Falk as a recruit, Kevin Falk was one of the top two recruits in the year in 1995,
Starting point is 00:56:52 along with Randy Moss. All the articles about Randy Moss is being the top recruit. all have Kevin Falk, who is from Slidell, I believe, all being referred to. That's the Slidell, the home of Jimmy Swagger, which reminds me, rest in peace, Jim Baker. Jim Baker, that's right. There we go. Wow, we just took a roller coaster ride through college football history. We took people a lot of places.
Starting point is 00:57:18 We did, man. I mean, you know, the thing is about us is that, you know, I mean, I enjoy college football a lot right now. Like, I mean, I enjoy gospel ball as about as much as I ever did. But there is something just a little beautiful about when everybody could start to play against each other. And, you know, it just expanded the universe of teams that we were interested in, for one. And, you know, it was just, you know, man, I don't know. Like, it was tied so much more to the history of the region and the state. And now these are like just, you know, football teams, they're still regional.
Starting point is 00:57:52 The state folks still root for Florida. they root for LSU, but it's just different. Like guys are coming from different places. There's not, you know, the same sort of local attachment that they used to be. I will say I feel like the one thing that we're losing that I really don't like is a thought of us losing it is because of the money and obviously not blaming anybody who would do this. But me and Dominique were talking about this. Do you remember when Ohio State played against Buffalo in their first game one year? in 2013.
Starting point is 00:58:25 And we were like, who is this guy? And it was Khalil Mack, and he was just wrecking shop. Can you imagine? They just never expected that game to be that kind of hard. But you know what, though? I guarantee that there was somebody in Ohio State's coaching staff
Starting point is 00:58:42 that was watching the film like, hey, but he couldn't explain it to them. Yeah. He ain't going to do that to me. And then he came out there and he was destroying. That's over now. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:58:54 Because that guy is transferring. When I did the Chambliss piece, I talked to his coach, Tonya Nees at Fair Estate. And he's like, man, I lost seven, eight, nine dudes. Yeah, man. Off my team last year. Like, they're just feeder systems. So there's something to be said about when you have a team,
Starting point is 00:59:08 and maybe it's an eight-win team. But, man, they got that guy. Yeah. Ain't a lot of teams. Just, that's not going to happen so much. Yeah, like the Noah for Feeder thing. Like, he's been playing in Arizona for, you know, it seems like, you know,
Starting point is 00:59:21 Trump candidate was his running back. But he's been there for a while, but yeah, that's just not going to be a thing because you're going to always have to fend off. You're always like JKS. We're going to see it at Cal this year. But he's going to have to leave Cal for a bunch of reasons. But even if everything had mostly gone right up there with this new with the new head coach. And it is not. I mean, bro.
Starting point is 00:59:42 I mean, they've already changed play callers, man. We just out of the first month of the season. Yeah. Okay. They've already changed play callers. They were going to have to fight to keep that boy, like no matter what. even if he had had a great year, Kyle was going to struggle to keep that kid.
Starting point is 00:59:57 And, I mean, it's even kind of funny because Mississippi State is in the SEC. But you heard what Nick Saban said about Camario Taylor. He said, right now, I'm in Alabama. I'll be trying to get him to go into portal right now. And maybe Camario is committed to Mississippi State as he says he is. But he's going to have to turn, he going to have to turn about $10, $11 million. Where are they going to get the money? The Mississippi State question is,
Starting point is 01:00:22 Yeah. Where are we going to get the money from? Yeah, man. Right? Yeah. Speaking of similar things, how many more years you think your boy got at Colorado? Oh, man, you know what? I think.
Starting point is 01:00:40 Before you get started, you tell me if I don't want to lead you all the way down the road. But I think we're just counting down the days. I mean, if the day may be this year, I don't know. but I mean, this isn't going to work. That's how I feel is that this is not going to work. I definitely think it's not going to work. I think it's not going to work for a couple reasons. He hasn't covered himself in glory.
Starting point is 01:01:02 He doesn't, like he doesn't have a special teams coordinator. He can't settle. How? How? They got the money. Why not? I mean, I've never heard of a team in modern times not having a special teams coordinator. Why would you not do that?
Starting point is 01:01:16 That's a job we have to fill. I mean, serious. Who's doing that at? And that's why they was out there with eight dudes. Eight people last week, man. And then what happened after they called time out because they had eight? I mean. Don't tell them what happened after they called time out.
Starting point is 01:01:30 You saw what happened after they called a time out. There eight people on the field for a field goal block so they had to call a time out. And then they went out of the field again with the wrong number of people, right? Nine. Yeah, right. Who were these other two people? I mean, bro. Is it the dudes that he kicked off the team for laughing?
Starting point is 01:01:44 I mean, seriously, he filed out. He was like, oh, shit, that guy ain't here no more. Oh, my bad. Yeah, I mean, it's just so sloppy. And there's nothing identifiable about any Dion team. Like, Travis Hunter and Shador covered up a lot of flaws within that program, right? That's how good of players they are. I know people can shit on Shadoo it now, but he was a very good college quarterback.
Starting point is 01:02:08 But they didn't really figure out a system. He didn't figure out a counterpunch after everybody else realized, oh, you can take 80 or 90 recruits and nobody going to say nothing anymore. Like, that's just how we do business now. When Dion did it, it was novel, and he took on some criticism for it. But then everybody was like, oh, yeah, we can just turn over our roster in one year. So he didn't have a counterpunch after anybody figured that out. But my other thing is that, man, everybody fails in Colorado now. That's not a good job anymore.
Starting point is 01:02:35 No, it's, it was, he was in a position when they were in the Big 12 and before the money really got rolling, that the presence of Dion Sanders gave them a comparative advantage. Yes. and that comparative advantage is gone. And now, I mean, this, and I want to be clear about this part, this is not just about him. These dudes are going to have to start coaching.
Starting point is 01:02:59 Like the I magically get players guy. Oh, that ain't it no more, man. You're going to have to get out here and coach. Well, the thing is, yeah, so they've pretty much made the recruiter obsolete. Yeah. Like, you would like, the cow thing, which is interesting, Tosh Lippoy, he was known as a recruiter.
Starting point is 01:03:17 And so it's like we got a GM for that. Like we spend money. Like you don't have to do that anymore. And so yeah, so like if you get talent, you're going to still have to be able to do something with it. And I just don't, I mean, Dion, man, they've just, again, no consistency on offense. They've never really had a good defense.
Starting point is 01:03:38 Bro, this is a thing. And I know this is your dog, but I got it. He had worn sap around children, bro. If I was like, whatever you start there, you probably either didn't need to say, that I said what was coming next. You could pick the other one. But that being said, I was very surprised
Starting point is 01:03:52 that Warren got that job. On one hand, I wasn't surprised because I think at actually coaching, Warren would be excellent. Absolutely. But I would not have expected that he could get them passed. I mean, for what is worth.
Starting point is 01:04:05 They got Marshall Falk pass those people, too, who left that NFL network job under not great circumstances. And now he's failing miserably at Southern and he's got one of the same problems Dion got. can't take nobody questioning him. Yeah, man.
Starting point is 01:04:20 I mean, it's just they didn't, I think they skipped the line. They didn't have to go learn the hard way to, man, being an assistant and having an idea for what you could do, but not the idea, is humbling. And you learn to work with a whole bunch of other people, and you also develop a lot of different ways to teach,
Starting point is 01:04:38 a philosophy. You come up with that. Marshall Fogg didn't have no time to do that, man. He's learning it all. This is the first time he's doing all this stuff, which is why, I mean, Southern is good enough. I don't think they had to do that.
Starting point is 01:04:53 Tennessee State did it with Eddie George, and it was very successful. And it turned out he's. And Eddie George is now coaching at Bowling Green. But he did it there and it worked. I think for those schools where the money isn't the draw as much anymore, the idea of he can get us some guys or he can get some people to give us some money. Yes.
Starting point is 01:05:14 Yes. You know, like I see why you make the call. to make the decision that that's what you're going to do. I don't know nearly as much about the talent pool from which they are dealing with, you know, getting coaches at that level. I don't, I feel like it's not too dissimilar to like the university president rotation above black colleges.
Starting point is 01:05:32 Oh, yeah. Everybody's kind of sit around a carousel in some form of fashion. But for Colorado, you're right. It's not a great job. You and I grew up at an anomalous time. Yes. In the history of college football where Colorado. Colorado was a power.
Starting point is 01:05:49 Again, Big A recruiting standards and California schools kind of being down. And what they could offer, there was the rare time where one of your benefits that you could offer is being, this is Nebraska did this too. We are far from you. And that was a positive. Oh, yeah. There was a different time. We try to get, we try to help get that boy away from bad influences.
Starting point is 01:06:13 I got to get out of town. But of course, what they wind up doing is what happens. I've seen this talked about in New York where like somebody got an a sister or whatever and she moved to Westchester or out of, you know, upstate or whatever it is. And so you decide to send your kid to go live with his anie because you want to give them a better, you know, situation, get him out of trouble or whatever it is. But the problem is you're not the only person that got this bright idea. And so what happens is all them boys get up there hanging out with each other.
Starting point is 01:06:43 They link up. Right, right? They squad up. And that's the same thing. That was happening with these cats. They get there and they're like, finally. It's crazy. Somebody speaking my language.
Starting point is 01:06:54 I mean, it's crazy too that like Eric B. enemy was like at the center. You know what I mean? Like, Eric Bient to me, man, he was a husbandry, you know, I don't think he was a high trophy.
Starting point is 01:07:03 Finals. Was he a finals? Yeah. He was a finalist. He was cold, man. And it's like, yeah, Colorado got dudes from Houston. They got dudes from L.A.
Starting point is 01:07:10 And Alford Williams, right? And Davis McGee and Alford Williams. And that gets in line with what we were talking about with Texas. Mm-hmm. when the racism issue at Texas consensued well into the 1990s. Absolutely. Well, Mike, do you know where the best player off? I had forgotten this, and I was reminded of it when he died very recently.
Starting point is 01:07:33 The best player on 1985 Yates, do you know where he went? Are we not. I know you're talking about Johnny Bailey. No, I'm not talking about Johnny Bailey. I'm talking about Melvin Foster. Oh, I'm not up on him. Johnny Bailey and Santana Dotson with two names that I, like, jumped out. Now, Dotson was the young guy, but go ahead.
Starting point is 01:07:50 Melvin Fawson, I think, was the best recruit in the state for sure that year, and he was one of the top in the country. 1985, Yates, one of the best high school football teams in Texas football history, and it was the first all-black state champion, right? But they produced several pros, like Bumani said,
Starting point is 01:08:07 Johnny Bailey, Santana Dotson. But Melvin Fawson was the number one rate recruit. He went to Iowa. He signed with Iowa in 1985. And so it's like, you skipped Texas for Iowa? Well, I know Johnny Bailey wasn't that big, but do you remember where he went?
Starting point is 01:08:24 A&M Kingsville, right? Yeah, Texas A&M, well, now is A&M. It was A&I. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Also where Daryl Green went. Yep, I mean, Santana Dawson, went to Baylor. Michael Singletary, went to Baylor because he's a worthing product. You know what I'm saying?
Starting point is 01:08:39 None of the, none of your favorite guys that came up out of the cities of Houston and Dallas really went to Texas, like that until you say Mac Brown got there. Now it's not quite like Mississippi where none of the best players in the history of the state of Mississippi, even the white boys. None of them went to the best quarterback. The two best, I mean, the best quarterback in the history of the state of Mississippi is Brett
Starting point is 01:09:00 Farf, who did not go to Ole Miss or Mississippi State. The best running back in the history of state of Mississippi is Walter Payton who did not go to Ole Miss or Mississippi State. The best receiver, quite possibly the greatest football player who ever lived is Jerry Rice, who did not go to Ole Miss. or Mississippi State. They were so dedicated to that sizzle. I mean, man.
Starting point is 01:09:20 The Mississippi State people will tell you they offered rice, but they was running the bone. That is what they'll tell you. I would stop running the bone. Well, I mean, look, man, Steve McNair, I mean, they tried to make him a defensive back. Yep. Like, why would you do that?
Starting point is 01:09:40 Did you see his tape? Did you not watch his tape? Oon Jain, what would be like an amazing skit to write is like, take it back to the 1960s and somebody walking into Archie Madden's house and being like, well, son, you ever tried to run backwards? Yeah, I don't know. It's got to look at that, huh?
Starting point is 01:09:55 I mean, man, you got good feet. You got good feet. But I just, but the thing I would do what I say about Colorado real quick is that there's only been one coach in this century there that has not gotten fired or left with a lose. Well, he did leave with a losing record.
Starting point is 01:10:14 Tucker. Tucker. The only guy. guy that has ever gotten out of there without getting fired. Mel Tucker, and he left after a five and seven season. That's how what people think of the Colorado job. Yeah, man. That's what people think of that job.
Starting point is 01:10:28 And so it may be true that Dion may not be a good coach, but how will we know? Because nobody has been able to succeed in Colorado right now. They never got up off the ground after that scandal, really. No, man. And actually, if you look at Gary Barnett's years, they were okay. They still had something going. It went from McCartney to New Heisle to Barnett.
Starting point is 01:10:51 They kept it going for multiple coaches after the fact. Yeah, yeah. But the Barnett things just sort of broke them. Well, they lost 70 to 3 in the 2005 Big 12 championship game. And those 70 were scored in three quarters. They could have easily put up 100 points. on them in that game. Vince in Houston in the conference championship game.
Starting point is 01:11:19 I mean, easily put up 100 as much, but 100 was on the board. Yeah, man. I mean, I think Joel Clatt talks about. I think he got knocked out of that game. He did. Yeah, he did. I didn't bother to learn his name at the time. I learned that retroactively.
Starting point is 01:11:32 It didn't matter who was out there. Yeah, I mean, it clearly did not matter. I mean, three points. It just, I got the asses kick. That was destruction. But we got our man, Joe Oil, why you point of me? I got to say one thing because I didn't say it on tailgates. I got to say here.
Starting point is 01:11:47 RIP, Coach Franchione, man. Yeah. He just passed on Tuesday at the age of 75. Coach P gets most of the credit and deservedly so for making TCU basically a miracle program, saving them from the hinterlands of college football because that's where we were headed when I got there. And when Coach Franchone took over, he saw something at TCU that nobody else could see. And, I mean, of course, he was coming for New York. Mexico. So it ain't like he, you know, that was a better job. T.C. was a better job in New Mexico.
Starting point is 01:12:17 But he saw something that people did not see. And in that first year, you know, we beat USC and the Sun Bowl. And it really, the program has never really been the same since. So, I know that, you know, does A&M fans feel a certain way about him? Bama fans feel a certain way about him. But for TCU, man, he's as, he's, I mean, there's not very people, many people in the, in the history of that program that are more important than him. And I will say this about Alabama fans and how they feel. For those of you who don't know, Dennis Franchone is the last man to look at Alabama and say, Save yourself. Franchone came in there.
Starting point is 01:12:54 I think what the thing was that they didn't tell the truth about what the sexes were going to be. He got in there. He gave it one year. Yeah, yeah. That was like, I'm blowing this pop stand. Yeah, man. I mean, look, man. And also, I don't think he was used to living in that kind of a fishbow.
Starting point is 01:13:09 No, no. See, that was that people just don't understand. understand they still don't get it, Joel. DeBoar, again, DeBoer, who's by the way, maybe the greatest road game coach that's ever lived. My man, RJ Young did the thing on his show about how playing on the road, even at Alabama, DeBoer has been excellent at that. You guys don't know it.
Starting point is 01:13:27 It's a terrible, miserable job. And Frant Johnny was like, oh, no, no, no. I'll go to A&M. I'll go anywhere else. Anywhere else. Yeah, man. He got out for anybody through a brick through his window. There's that. There is that.
Starting point is 01:13:44 Alabama, boy. That's what they do. My man, I pray. Joe, I say, Joe Anderson, check him out. Wrangor Tailgate, press box. I still got to read the thing that you wrote about the Tupac thing. Because Joel got this bad habit. Joel don't send the homies no links. I'd be like, yo, where's the thing? You know, you're going to do the thing or whatever. Joe don't never, Joe get done with anything.
Starting point is 01:14:03 He ain't never going to tell us. He's a little too modest in that regard. I appreciate you saying. I mean, I just, yeah, I need to do it. I need to share it. You're right. My bad. Appreciate you, homie.
