People thought denim on denim was peak fashion, inline skates were everywhere,
Starting point is 00:00:38 and two out of three women rocked, the Rachel. While those things stayed in the 90s, one thing that hasn't is that fuzzy feeling you get when WestJetting welcomes you on board. Here's to WestJetting since 96. Starting point is 00:01:10 My name is Beaumani Jones. Thanks for listening wherever you get your podcast. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like, rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are a hater. It is a Deontay Thursday. A Thursday.
Starting point is 00:01:27 You understand what I'm saying? Deontay Lee O'Rangor was going on, man. I'm good, man. Glad to be on. We haven't talked ball in a little bit, so I'm definitely glad to be here to do so. And we're lucky, man. Deiote out here teaching the well, helping them lead to weight, high school football coaches.
Starting point is 00:01:43 So he gave us a little bit of time, you know what I'm saying? Look, man, the voice is a little frogier than usual right now. Oh, boy, y'all. That's right. You're having to whip the boys into shape. That's right. You're having to remind them who's in charge. Listen, man, I thought that I thought the one kid I had was enough,
Starting point is 00:01:59 and then I went and adopted, basically, another 105 between our program. And now we've got to have conversations about how we leave the weight rule. how we need certain classrooms. Not exactly how I expected I'd be spending my adulthood, but the football part makes it all worth it. Damn, man, all good. You are also in Southern California, so I want to start before we get to an NFL preview of sorts.
Starting point is 00:02:20 But the Lakers just sold, or we got word that they're selling, for $12.5 million. There's a lot going on in there. I just want to start with the simple fact that they just sold the motherfuckers a year ago for 10, and now he flipped it for $2,000. what I have. That's a 25% return on a double-digit billion dollar asset. And as nefarious as this appears to be, as janky as this appears to be, as trumped up. And I do mean Trump,
Starting point is 00:02:51 because it's a Kushner involved in this, that this all seems to be. Shit, man, you come off me 25% return in a year. I sell you anything I got. Listen, man, I'm a southern California native. Flip the, flipping property is the name of the game down here. I can walk down my street right now and see a bunch of signs outside of houses. People who were doing fixer efforts and getting out of there. And I can't even call it that because Mark Walter wasn't even around long enough to get his own furniture in the building.
Starting point is 00:03:16 You know? When he's going to have to move to Dodgers though? Because the thing is, he had the federal investigation. And so they've been quite, look, Robota Shelburne got on the radio and told my man Sedano that this came together this week. Right. We're talking on Wednesday.
Starting point is 00:03:32 Who decides to sell a team for 12 and a half billion dollars in a couple of days. Right. That means you had the all hands meeting on Monday to finalize this and then sent the offer through and we was putting our signatures on it on Tuesday. That makes no sense to me. I think I was reading the LA Times reporting on the investigation and I think that his insurers that he was financing his purchase of the Lakers, Mark Walter, that is, said
Starting point is 00:03:59 they, oh, yeah, we got like one, maybe one and a half billion in, you know, related party transactions. And they're like, actually, let's go look at them books. And it came back for 21 million, 21 billion. Now that is going to grab the attention to federal investigators, right? You might be able to slide a billion here or there underneath people's noses and take a little slap on the wrist. You know, once the FTC or SEC starts knocking on your door, you start talking about 21 billion with a B, and now everything's got to stop.
Starting point is 00:04:28 Everybody's got to look at your paperwork a little bit harder. So this raises an interesting question because another L.A. sports thing that, you may remember is when Fray McCourt bought the Dodgers with no money. Yes. Yes. One of the amazing hustles of all time, for those who don't remember this, Frey McCourt bought the Dodgers with no money, he bought it with paper, but he did not actually have any money. Then he got into a divorce and the team had to be split and neither party actually had the money to buy the other out, right? Or in order to pay, I think, or in order to pay the settlement, McCourt had to sell the Dodgers. McCourt bought the Dodgers with
Starting point is 00:05:05 no money, sold them, I think to Mark Walter, for a billion and got to keep the parking lots, retained ownership of the parking lots. I bring all that up to say after some of the market stuff and crashing and everything else, you had to have the actual money in order to get these teams, right? The ability to buy teams with paper kind of went away. And it is amazing. The level of jacanery that goes on in high level money, you would be shocked at how many people buy money, I mean buy things without actually having money. Hey, such and such says he's good for it. And these things slide.
Starting point is 00:05:40 I read this book called Billion Dollar Whale. You'd check it out about the Malaysian cat. They ran a super scam. He'd a reasoned that that boy, prize going to jail. Right. Bank broke the Wolf of Wall Street. It's all this stuff. But the big thing was they didn't really have any money.
Starting point is 00:05:53 Or like you take a little money, make the money look like some money, dot, I die. Like, they're running so much game on this. And then for you to say, you read that and it turned out, they're like, yeah. You know, it said it's just a little bit of money that. That was janky. Turned out it's $27 billion that's janky. Ain't that's something? You know, it's like you ever try to deposit a check from somebody who don't really got it and then you'll send you that email or make that call like, hey, we're going to be spending a little extra time on your account. So some numbers is about to change pretty drastically
Starting point is 00:06:22 in the next 24 to 48 hours. I think that that's a lot of what's going on here. And you bringing up the Dodgers is an interesting thing in that. I mean, A, because the whole McCourt situation basically built the Dodgers dynasty that we have now because they were able to work. something out with their TV deal where they don't have to share that revenue the same way that the other 2019s and the NLB does. And I think that, you know, I tweeted when I saw that this came together in a couple of days like, I can hear the documentary music rolling now. And I don't know whose side I'm more interested in. I don't know how I'm more interested in the Cushner end of this than how you're able to get, you know, whipped together $12.5 billion to make this purchase or Mark
Starting point is 00:06:57 Walter, who just bought this team and was starting to bring in all his Dodgers people and changing analytics and changing the way that they're running the business. And now all of a sudden he's right back out of the building. I don't know which one I won is part one more than the other. Yeah. Now keep in mind for people who don't know, this is Jared Kushner's brother. Right. That is part of this with Bob Iger.
Starting point is 00:07:18 With Bob Iger. Right, with Bob Iger. But as our man, Yaron Weitzman has pointed out who wrote the book on this latest, this leg of regime, these two guys don't have $12 billion. Exactly. Like, we don't actually know where this money is going to come from, but the deal was worked out in a couple of days. The only circumstance under which that happens is,
Starting point is 00:07:41 yo, I got to move this thing right now. Right now, okay. And so you call, like you talk to one set of people. You don't open it up. This is like the Luca Dodgers trade. Like, hey, man, Anthony Davis is a pretty good, like, thing to get back. But at the same time, like, you're not going to open this up to market, right? Right.
Starting point is 00:07:58 So you call to one person, if you could get 12. and a half from these people who we don't know if they have 12 and a half, why wouldn't you put this out there for more people to get? Because you, for whatever reason, needed this to move fast. Right now, right? This is, hey, let me go find somebody I can sell this house or this car to before they come repossess my shit. Yeah. Well, what you got right now, man? What's your right now, man? Right. Like, I'll take that. Yeah, because Mark Walters couldn't even be like, it'll take $15 billion. He couldn't even get to that place.
Starting point is 00:08:33 Exactly. And that watch on your wrist, that look nice. That looks nice. Let me get a look at that. What's the last time he got this thing appraised? You know what? I'll take it myself. I'll take it myself and I'll find out what that number is.
Starting point is 00:08:47 Ooh, nice and quiet. Okay, okay. I'd see what's happening. Yeah, so like, you know what it feels like, when it feels like it's just the beginning of something. Right. And this has got to, it can only be, just the beginning. Like I think I started, I'll talk about this just a second ago, but the something
Starting point is 00:09:03 larger is, I think people have lost sight of this that owners weren't always super rich in sports. They were kind of rich, right? You had like car dealers who owned teams. Like Jerry Buss, a physical chemist who had made some money in real estate. Like these were the kinds of guys that were buying this. Now all head fund to billionaires because the money has gotten so big. Like I wish my guy compliment was doing billions again because Bobby Axorod would buy a team. Exactly. Like that's who these people are now. The context we're in now, the way that Mark Cuban got to the Mavericks, people will be looking
Starting point is 00:09:39 at him like, okay, so we want to talk about you as a minority owner, right? Yes. That's another guy with a fascinating money story. 100%. But you're absolutely right. Him coming in with $3 billion. Nah, partner. You sit in that chair on that side of the table over there.
Starting point is 00:09:56 That was the thing where, hey, every time people are going to be great. a player can own a team. I don't think you understand how shit works. They don't have that kind of money. And how do I know that? LeBron thought that he was going to be able to parlay his shit and get two team ownership. Brother, it ain't going like that way anymore.
Starting point is 00:10:10 You can be an ambassador. That's your role now. You know what you be? Magic. Yes. Magic, rich, magic, magic, rigid, Ridge's Hill. Magic spin every July on a boat just cruising around.
Starting point is 00:10:23 Fuck where, fuck anything else. Just cruising around on a boat. And you know what he is? He, he, he, he, he's a Philly fanatic. Yep, he'd a smile away, man. You'd a smile away, man. That's what, that's what athletes get to be. You get to go smile away.
Starting point is 00:10:38 Everybody feel good with Magic. Everybody feel good with Magic pull up. Exactly. The handshake, brother. That, that man, as you would say. No, man, I were talking about time, Magic pulled up to the Seaport studio, ESPN. I think I have heard this. Oh, my God, dude, Magic pulled up.
Starting point is 00:10:50 And it was so funny, because I was working with Pablo at the time, and Pablo didn't get it. Like, you got to, like, I know you were in L.A., so it lands a little different, but I had to, but I had to, to be fair, recognize Pablo's six years old with Magic retires, right? Now, to me, the measure everybody needs to have is we call him Magic and not because he asked us to. We do that. We decided that this dude is Magic, okay? You merit this nickname. Right. How absurd that is that this is what it is. So Magic pulled up and I have been listening to Pablo, run Magic down on the air forever, act like LeBron was in charge of the team. I used to be like, yo, man,
Starting point is 00:11:26 Do you know who magic is? Like, you think magic just let LeBron tell him what to do? Like, this is magic. It did not land. Dog, magic pulled up. I watched Pablo stand on the sofa to shake Magic's head. Like, jump over the sofa from the back to get a spot to stand on that. There's a picture out there of him doing that.
Starting point is 00:11:43 Because when magic pull up, everybody feels good. And magic knew everybody's history. Magic knew New Carolina than Miami before you got here, right? Right? He's like, yeah, Pablo, you're all of it, right? Like, magic, magic. Magic, that's what LeBron would be. LeBron would have to start treating people a lot different
Starting point is 00:12:01 if he was going to get into an ownership group. Absolutely. And I mean, I love bringing up that magic anecdote because that's also a reminder that the Michigan don't leave him, right? No. He just got money with a lot of Michigan underneath them, right? And if you read some of them old stories about how he was handled the business behind closed doors,
Starting point is 00:12:19 we see the smiles. Everybody else in the building. They ain't getting that version of magic. I have been, no, that's because they're not getting magic. We're getting magic. Yeah, Irvin is what's going on behind them doors. They are getting Irvin. Also, now that we're mentioning this,
Starting point is 00:12:34 I'd never really thought about it. Can you imagine magic being magic except we called him Irvin? Right. Urban doesn't really fit. Right. I hear Irvin Johnson moving like this. I'm looking for a fur coat.
Starting point is 00:12:48 Okay. Or a fur coat or just a shirt with Irvin on this side. Yes. In the name of his employer, on that side. Right. Over 100%. 100%. Irv is what you call me.
Starting point is 00:13:01 He is Irv. Irvin. Man. Irvin. Anyway, just as that news just dropped, everybody's just like, yo, something's crazy here. And it leads us to a question that I will use to take us into football. I can tell social content when we have it. So go ahead and cut this with the time. Come, Mike.
Starting point is 00:13:20 If you can get 12.5 billion for the Lakers. what could you get for the cowboy? Listen, man. Listen, man. I know Stephen Jones, I know Stephen Jones has been sitting on this property, waiting for dad to hand this off before he takes that long ride out into the sunset.
Starting point is 00:13:42 Listen, man, second generation ownership don't sound as pretty as sitting on maybe 15 to 20 of them tanks. So it's interesting, though, because Stephen Jones is not young. Right, right? I think that's an important. detail to bring up because maybe he's with the team, right? This don't feel like them Steinbrother brothers.
Starting point is 00:14:01 Steynbrunner brothers. I call them the Steinbrunner brothers. That would be funny. But the Steybrenner brothers, like they don't enjoy this. Right. Well, there's only one left. Exactly. He's not into baseball.
Starting point is 00:14:12 Like, this isn't a thing to him. I do get the feeling that Stephen really digs this. But again, the Steinbrothers have kept the team and I've been shocked. And I have said for a while, watch out for insert sovereign wealth fund here. swooping up and getting either of them. Because if you are, I resist the idea of sports washing. I don't think it works, right? I think it's just something to talk about.
Starting point is 00:14:35 But if you get the Lakers or the Yankees, like, you're playing a different game. If the Saudis pull up on Stephen Jones and they're like, yeah, we give you 20. 20 of them. 20. Okay. Shit, man.
Starting point is 00:14:48 They might have Buster Rhyms do a musical performance before the first game. I mean, look, and if we're looking at the profile of people, who have been by a team in the NFL lately. It sounds like them nose is starting to dwindle a little bit more. Hey, yeah, man, because these numbers is just going up. And my last thing I would say before we get to the football through this round of tanges that has gotten us to football, you and I talked about this on Texas a little while. I said that if the Saudis bought the team, they might have Buster Rhimes do a performance before
Starting point is 00:15:16 the game. I don't know if some of you were too young to remember this because this is now, like almost 20 years ago. Now do we think about it? How crazy is it? In the 21st century that Buster Rhymes not only did a song called, and I quote, Yes. A-Rab money.
Starting point is 00:15:38 It also came with a dance. Yes. Yes. I mean, and this is post, this is post what, Punjabi rap from Jay-Z? Post everything. You know, like, I think, I think, who was that? Was that Naz? I don't think it was not as in Khalis who ended up trying to use
Starting point is 00:15:59 some South Asian sample they ended up getting yanked. Yes. Well, like, think about this. Girls, girls, girls, I don't think Jay-Z did that at the Blueprint show. Because in this day and age, what tribe you with. The Overton window has shifted. Yeah. It's not allowed.
Starting point is 00:16:17 Right. You can't do that. I went to the Ben Ryan Dirty show at Houston. And the in the Lube with Smoke D talking about, man, there's two dudes in here kissing. Nope, that joke is not. Can't do that one no more. You can't do that no more. You don't even get the ironic laughter.
Starting point is 00:16:30 No, no, no, no. You just get a lot of people looking very upset. Now, let me make sure, let me get the year right on this song. 2009, Buster Robes did A-Ramp money, which again, had a dance. We are in the throes of the Patriot Act. Yes. How could you still get away with that? 100%.
Starting point is 00:16:54 2009, but let me tell you something, that is exactly what I think the NFL is looking for. 100%. Still looking for. Now, to the football. So I had sent word, this is something I did a little different because much to the chagrid of some of my guests, saying a real prep-heavy situation over here, it's jazz, man. You know the songs, you know the chords. You can play the music.
Starting point is 00:17:20 We vibe, right? But I had looked at the end. NFL. And I think this is as wide open in NFL season as there has ever been considering a team dominated the Super Bowl last year. And I don't hear anybody saying that they're forgetting winning the Super Bowl, forget going, even say they're going to win their division. Right. Right. And the team that lost the Super Bowl, they got dominated in the Super Bowl, people talking about them like they should be throwing a party and hanging a banner if they go 8 and 9 this year. Y, people are expecting regression.
Starting point is 00:17:54 And meanwhile, America's number one rooting project, the Buffalo Bills, they got them a new stadium. Boy, white folks is so ready for the eventual Josh Allen coordination. And it's not all the white folks, but it's white folks. We ain't got a lot. It's enough of them. We ain't got a lot. But I had sent across for you a list of like eight teams that were like contenders or contenders. Then I realized while we sitting here talking, I had.
Starting point is 00:18:24 left two off. It's really closer to 10. Like, I'm going to run through the list in total, but I feel like there are 10 teams whose fans really believe, yeah, we can win this this year. The Rams, the Seahawks, the Eagles, the Bears, America's team to Detroit Lions, quietly, the other America's team, the Dallas Cowboys, the Packers, the Bears, the Bears, the 49ers, if anybody can still play. Right. The Bills and the Ravens. And I would say that 40% of the teams on that list
Starting point is 00:19:07 not only have that hope, there's some expectation there. I'll say it's a few better. Yeah, it's some coach probably get pulled into the office if you don't. All right. So like, I'm going to run through this and go one by one and we'll say yes or no whether these teams should reasonably expect, right? Not just, I think if things
Starting point is 00:19:27 break right, okay? The Rams. Expect. You should absolutely expect. In their case, if they don't win, your concern is not pulling the coach, your concern is always the coach just being like, yeah, I'm good. I'm going home. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:41 My chick bad. My chick good. I'm rich. 100%. The Seahawks. Yeah. They should absolutely reasonably expect to be back. They can, but we'll get to their issue in a minute. I was going to say they got one glaring issue. It's huge.
Starting point is 00:19:56 It's huge. It's huge. It's huge. No, not everybody knows. They lie. That is true. That is fair. The Eagles.
Starting point is 00:20:04 I would say, if we're being honest, break right. If you're asking anybody else who likes the Eagles, it's expect. Yeah. I mean, the way they're going to treat their quarterback based on this year. It's a you better. I mean, they laid the groundwork for this months ago. One hundred percent. It's a house, kid.
Starting point is 00:20:21 Exactly. Right. Exactly. And the head coach is 100% in that conversation too. Correct. The Bears. This is a break right situation. I agree.
Starting point is 00:20:32 I agree. I think last year was a lot of break right, a lot of close games. And historically, there's some regression on that. There's also the possibility of the leap from the quarterback. Yes. It's on the board. Yes. Detroit, I think, is a break right.
Starting point is 00:20:47 That's a break right. That was a break right before Terry and Arnold got into all his league. But shit, man, he was like down. to not even playing in the dime no more by the time that he got. By the way, teams are calling him in. Yeah, I was to say I saw the Seahawks worked them out. Somebody thinks he can beat that case.
Starting point is 00:21:04 Listen, his lawyer's talking like, this ain't going to stick. Yeah. I know that I think the Tampa is trying to prove a point about, you know, a lot of cities go through this where that hip-hop shit that y'all on some of these other metropolitan areas surrounding our city,
Starting point is 00:21:22 but we ain't going down. They ain't going down like that. I will say this, though. His case from where I sit sounds a lot like they may not be able to bust you. Yes. But that's not about whether or not you did it. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:21:35 The did it part looks kind of clear to me, but should you go to jail for it is a little tricky. The Packers, I think, are kind of close to expect. I think they're right on that borderline of expect. You hear the names and you think about the trajectory of the team for the last three to four years. Yeah. Anybody else in this situation would be a you better.
Starting point is 00:21:58 I think for me, I'm probably looking at them more break right because they do have some problems and some key spots. But you go out and trade for Michael Parsons and then go pay him the money that you're paying them. And you're paying your quarterback the money that you're paying them. Yeah. This is kind of a you better. And Matt LaFleur has been here for a while.
Starting point is 00:22:14 So for him at least, it's a you better. And I think it's, I think their quarterback is absolutely a championship ceiling quarterback. 100%. Right. end of him and the particular things that he can do. You have a quarterback you can win a Super Bowl with, right? Absolutely. I actually realized I left another team out, so we take it to 11 from their,
Starting point is 00:22:31 the other team in that division is we've already rattled off the first three, the Vikings now that they have an NFL quarterback. That's going to be an interesting conversation if they're not in the, if they're not in the contending conversation again. Because I don't, I don't know if Kevin O'Connell can bus with, can have a bus season with Kyler Murray and people still be like, oh, you're the quarterback whisperer guy. Doesn't mean it's fair,
Starting point is 00:22:57 but I think that he can very quickly find himself in a similar situation as Kyle Shanahan is in, and at least Shanahan got you two trips to the Super Bowl. Yeah. Buffalo, I think break right. I think it's a break right season. I am interested with the ownership in GM there if they're going to be patient enough
Starting point is 00:23:15 with their new head coach to say. If things don't break right, you're okay. Well, I feel like those kinds of hires, we hired the offensive coordinator because we fired the head coach, like that type of setup, that has all the markings of one and done. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:23:33 It's totally on the board, right? Like not saying Joe Brady's only going to be there one year, but if they mess around and go like 11 and 7 and losing the wild card, oh yeah. Yeah. It only takes a couple of things for them to be like, yeah, man. Yeah, I dare Joe Brady to make it look like you took a step back.
Starting point is 00:23:50 I dare Joe Brady to look like you took a step back from last year to this year. Right. This higher 100% felt like a, okay, Josh, you get your pick this time. Right. You better be right. Yeah, we clearly identified. He's the problem. We promoted the GM who seemed more likely to be the issue.
Starting point is 00:24:07 I didn't have a problem with them firing McDurban just because nobody else has gotten to stay that long with a great quarterback and not wanting me, not gotten to a Super Bowl ever, right? Exactly. Nobody else gets to do that. The Ravens. I think they are in the expectation zone. They are in the expectation zone. Do you think they're a break right? I think that I think they're a break right team,
Starting point is 00:24:30 but you got to be in the expectations zone with a two-time MVP at quarterback, who's got to get paid. Three-time first team all-pro. Like, you got a hall of, you got a no doubt Hall of Famer under center, man. Like, you got to deliver. And the guy is approaching 30 now.
Starting point is 00:24:45 We are 100% in the, we can't talk about three to four-year windows. I need to know what can happen in the next eight to ten months type of situation. Hey, man, what do you think about the people who are really approaching this season as though, well, you know, it is on the board that maybe that they won't want to keep Lamar Jackson after this year? That sounds like people who would like to be fired if they had Eric DeCast's job. You don't let guys like that walk out the door for what? If he ain't hurt, if he ain't hurt.
Starting point is 00:25:19 This ain't a Peyton Manning where I don't know if his neck is ever going to work again. Yeah. This guy gets to stay as long as he wants to be around. My question is, then what? Right. Like, let's just say you decide, you know what, this is the Mara Jackson thing. I don't really think you can get it done with him. Then what?
Starting point is 00:25:35 Oh, and my bad, I left off another team. The Texans. Oof. Quarterback, it's a you better. Defense. You know, it's funny. I think this is the one situation. where everybody is in a U better zone
Starting point is 00:25:51 except for the head coach because he has bought so much good equity would be able to turn this thing around instantly. Yes. It's the head coach and the edge rush it. Yes. Y'all are good. Everybody else, it's time, man.
Starting point is 00:26:06 Yeah. So like, we just rattle off 11 teams that have, like, for real super, like going into week one, you're like, hey, man, it would be no shock to see any of them in the Super Bowl. None.
Starting point is 00:26:23 Now, coming up next, now we get to, like, actually talk about these jokers just a little bit because, I mean, it seems cliche, but what all these teams have in common to me? Fascinating quarterback situations. Look, if you're serious about performance, you want products you can trust.

Starting point is 00:28:34 All right, we are back with DeAte Lea de Renger, talking football. Now, I got to remember, I got to write down these other teams that I realized I had forgotten so that we can get to them and discussing what's going to happen here. But yeah, it's 11 teams with fascinating quarterback situations. And I think fascinating in the sense that all of these teams, except for one, I'm like, but you ain't getting nobody better than this.
Starting point is 00:28:59 And I think the one is the one that just held up the Lombardi trial. That is exactly it. That is exactly it. The only one where I'm like is Sam Donald. Because look, I'm going to get to this part early. I've talked about this before. I don't, I'll tie these two together. No, everybody who's like,
Starting point is 00:29:15 can Kyla Murray be the next Sam Donald? When the hell does Sam Donald get as good as Kyle of Murray? Like, you follow these things more closely than I do. You tell me if I'm tripping. I know that people don't like him, but I would much rather have Kyle and Murray be my quarterback to Sam Donald. I think so too. I think that this 100% is a good hang versus bad hang,
Starting point is 00:29:34 type of situation, right? Well, I think that that's really what this comes down to. I don't think the Sam Donald gets the money that he got going to Seattle. If he wasn't such a high character, everybody likes having him in the building, seems like he's turned a corner in his career from an emotional maintenance perspective,
Starting point is 00:29:52 and he ain't talking about seeing ghosts anymore. I think that that's really the thing more than anything. But if you gave me blind item tests, if you're just asking me, even coming off as low of a season as Kyler had last year, where they basically told him to go home and somebody else will cover your shift, I still think I would take Kyler over Sam Donald,
Starting point is 00:30:09 to most situations. Correct me if I'm wrong because I've seen, I did not see this loudly discussed, but I felt more of the internet film crowd talking about this. Seattle was protecting themselves from Sam Darnold a lot down the stretch last year. Like it wasn't as bad as it was down the stretch that year in Minnesota, but this was not a team winning because of its quarterback, no matter what you saw in the Super Bowl. I mean, the first half of the season was about Jackson Smith and Jigba and the second half of the season. season was about defense and special teams. I really don't think there was ever a point in the year where Sam Darnold could have
Starting point is 00:30:46 had a rightful argument for being the lead story out of Seattle. And I would definitely say, as they were trying to hold on to the number one seat in the NFC, everything else was about, let's get the ball to Kenneth Walker, let's get it to Zach Charbonate, and let's make sure our defense has good field position and we will win games that way because you started to see the turnovers and sacks go up. And I think that's just always going to be a part of his story as a quarterback, which is fascinating. We really rarely get situations like this with the quarterback where the problems are still obviously the problems, but he has somehow become just good enough in spite of those
Starting point is 00:31:19 problems to merit being able to hold down a job. They'd be rooting for, man. Like the rooting, you know, well, the jets let go with him too early. No, I was there. No, they didn't. No, I was there. The Panthers didn't make a mistake either. He had to go on there too. No, the 49ers did not make a mistake. They went with Brock Purdy. right. Right call. We'll do that. The absolute right call, right?
Starting point is 00:31:44 The absolute right call. Now, I want to throw another way in that division, though. Matthew Stafford, if you're expecting last year as Matthew Stafford this year, uh-uh, that's for a number of reasons. That's highly unlikely. But there are people who get mad at me when I do this. But I have always said the real comp for three-time pro ball with Matthew Stafford is three-time pro-Bald or Matthew Stafford. is three-time pro bowler Carson Palmer.
Starting point is 00:32:11 And Matthew Stafford's MVP season was Carson Palmer's 2015 season, which you could have argued was an MVP season also. They have the, they both look like a quarterback, right? Both have all this incredible talent. And they will both give you a timer to a game where you can have the ball if you would like it. Absolutely. If you can look alive and catch this pepper that's coming your way, you could have the chance.
Starting point is 00:32:36 And so Stafford at age 59 or how fucking old he is, had the best season of his life, right? Like, we've made him, the Stafford is a no-brainer hall of family discussion infuriates me because it is unsupported by fact or the fact that we were there. We never said this, right? 100%.
Starting point is 00:32:56 That Super Bowl they won was five years ago. The first half of your career still counts. And it's more than a half. Right. Like that's it in Detroit. It still counts. Yes, he had the one nice year with Jim Bob Cudor or every year or with Darrell Bevelier.
Starting point is 00:33:14 He had the one nice year with Jim Caldwell. That existed. We also saw the rest of his time in Detroit. It's not like he was a bad quarterback, but he certainly wasn't no damn Hall of Famer until 2021. That wasn't even a conversation worth having. And I think we would have said that Matt Ryan was better than him throughout that entire stretch.
Starting point is 00:33:33 And that would have been very much founded by. the evidence on the field. That would have 100% been founded by the evidence on the field. And I would say, I think the thing that pisses me off is less, he's in no doubt Hall of Famer as much as, you know, when people talk about being a temporarily, temporarily embarrassed millionaire from people on the right of the political spectrum, right? People talk about Matthew Stafford, like a, you know,
Starting point is 00:33:56 a temporarily embarrassed quarterback having to deal with Detroit and not being just as much a part of some of Detroit's losing as everybody else who was wearing them colors. Hey man, I watched what Josh Allen has helped do in Buffalo. Hell, I watched what Matt Ryan did out of the rubble and ashes in Atlanta, right? Say what you want about Stafford, he never elevated them, right? That being said, the man can do things, right? Like, that's the, like, he has, he's the closest to Mahomes in terms of, like, the tricks that he can do, right?
Starting point is 00:34:31 it's not a case where I don't see what people are talking about, right? That may be the best. He can do amazing, incredible things, and he has a great coach. He has, I would term now a great receiver and a very good of future Hall of Fame receiver on the other side. A lot of it is there. And then on the other side,
Starting point is 00:34:50 they went and got Miles Garrett and, I mean, I think Aaron Donald's going to play this year. Do you think Aaron Donald's going to play this year? After going to Randall's training camp and talking to some people around. training camp, I think that this is very much a, we're just waiting for him to say he's showing up on Monday. Yeah. I think everybody expects for him to be there.
Starting point is 00:35:11 Every weekend, I think they lay their hands down and I'm just like, I'm just looking for the text message. That's all I'm waiting on. We have to, we already got the locker set up. We got all his stuff, just how he likes it. We just waiting for him to walk through the door. And that's why people think that the Seahawks are not going to go to the Super Bowl or even win their own division, right? Right. That's the reason that people think that.
Starting point is 00:35:31 And it's crazy as this sounds. It just kind of depends on Stafford. I would say that you pointed out something that's been fascinating to me all off season. They have built an offense now where Matthew Stafford doesn't actually have to be Matthew Stafford. You know who Matthew Stafford gets to be? Jared Goff. That's who Matthew Stafford gets to be in this offense. Just with the trick shots in a much stronger arm, right?
Starting point is 00:35:53 Like that's really, if you go back and watch this past season and I was talking with, you know, a mutual colleague of ours in Mina Kimes about the MVP race. And when she was going really hard for Drake May and talking about how Matthew Stafford is really more so protected in this scheme now, this iteration of the scheme than he was in 2021 when they won a Super Bowl. And you go back and watch. And it's absolutely right. It's all run game on early downs, play action.
Starting point is 00:36:18 We're throwing the ball to wide open receivers. You're getting thrown coverage, right? It's not you having to be a superhero outside of these third and obvious situations. and he can call upon that from time to time, but he doesn't actually have to be that on a snap to snap basis. And they're 100% Super Bowl favorites now, because on the other side of the ball, you might bring back Aaron Donald in a situation
Starting point is 00:36:40 where he's actually not the best defensive player on your roster. Yeah, you should be winning the Super Bowl if that's your roster seven. Quarterback, the arc of quarterbacks is not an arc. Right. It's a, it's an EKG, right? Like, it does things. I think we just saw the other day. balls. You got no idea which way to say it's going on.
Starting point is 00:36:59 Stafford was staffer through a bunch of picks in practice the other day. Hell, the year he won the MVP, we didn't even though he was going to play because we thought he had a, he had a backiotomy. We ain't, we ain't, we ain't know what was going on. But it's all there laying out for them. They're going to be a really, really interesting team. But there's also a world where they could finish like third in the division, um, without playing badly.
Starting point is 00:37:23 I mean, going 10 to 7 and 11 and 6 is 100% on the table. All it takes is, Matthew Stafford getting out of bed wrong, picking up his kids and tweaking something, right, pulling a Larry Bird, you know, being out there in your driveway doing doing something you got no business doing and hurting your back. They've got a left tackle who seems to not be able to know how to behave each offseason who's under investigation might be suspended by the league for some domestic dispute issues that he has had. You've got Pookin Nakua who has definitely shown up until this point that he ain't know how to act in the off season. okay and you're bringing back i mean for as much as i love aaron donald i mean he is 35 you don't know exactly what's walking through the door i just know what i believe about him there's 100% a case where instead of being the top three offense they're ninth or 10th and instead of having the number
Starting point is 00:38:13 one defense they're fifth or sixth and you got to play san francisco twice you got to play Seattle twice, right? And you could very much look up one day and see this team being second or third in the NFC West and still feeling like, eh, they can go make a run to the Super Bowl. It is going to be a lot, I think, a cognitive dissonance with this team. Well, it's also going to be about like what the smart defensive coaches in the league cook up to stop what has happened. So McVeigh is interesting to me because I think McVeigh is an obviously excellent coach, right? But in some ways, he reminds me of Steve Kerr is an example of this.
Starting point is 00:38:50 Chip Kelly is an example of this. You were the future, right? Like you had this futuristic offense and when it hit Mike Marks, another guy like this. When you hit the streets, nobody could do anything with you because we were just blown away by whatever it was. And then in part because the process involves
Starting point is 00:39:11 other teams using your stuff, which means that these other defense coordinator, or see this in practice more. Everybody has greater familiarity with it. People then catch up. Like, there are certain people at a certain age who don't understand why when Chip Kelly gets a job, it's a thing because you had to be there, right? Chip Kelly was doing things.
Starting point is 00:39:27 Rich Rodriguez was another guy in college that was like that. But those guys normally don't like become the future again. And McVeigh never really became the future again. And now we're hearing stuff about how he wants to get back to like live and how he used to live, right? Like get back to the stuff that he wanted to do. And so I do wonder after Stafford was so good last year, what's the league going to have coming back against him?
Starting point is 00:39:52 I mean, it's interesting. You bring up all those, all those names you bring up from decades prior. The one thing that exists now that didn't exist then is just the craving need by the rest of the lead to have a piece of what you've done, right? Like I would say the NFL now when it comes to coach hiring, they've almost adopted this venture capitalist tech type of approach where, oh, if you were at Google just long enough to be able to see how to back in works, we'll come hire you to come design ours, right?
Starting point is 00:40:19 Like they have 100% kind of adopted that where guys like Sean Mannion, David Blow, you know, these backup quarterbacks who have no play calling experience now are getting offensive coordinator roles. That is a much different thing today than it was before where you had to have a little bit more of a proven track record. And I do think that McVeyes had a very interesting track in terms of he was 100% like three, four years ahead of the curve in 2017, 2018, and then the league caught up.
Starting point is 00:40:48 And then he pivoted, just like, as you said, over the last few years to, I want to give back to putting multiple tight ends on the field. Some of the stuff that we were doing when I was coming up up underneath the Grudens, right? Some of that, you know, kind of more strict West Coast, you know, drop back passing game and downhill run game stuff. And now I think we're starting to see the NFL say,
Starting point is 00:41:07 okay, we can do that too. And now I want guys like Nick and Manwari to basically be an extra linebacker for us. We're starting to find bodies that you can't really manipulate in the same way. You can't manipulate personnel as much as you were able to do earlier in his career. And I think that the biggest question to me is whether or not, if they have caught up to what the current paradigm is in terms of getting bigger bodies on the field to pass the ball and smaller bodies on the field to run the ball, what the next iteration of this is if there is
Starting point is 00:41:38 a next iteration. Because I think Sean McVeigh would tell you, I mean, we, we. just kind of lucked into that three tight-end stuff because DeVanté Addozabukin got banged up throughout the season and we just need to be able to field an offense on a week-to-week basis. I don't know if they're going to have another card at play. And I'm just fascinated to see if that matters because maybe they do just have the best play caller in the league and a quarterback who can still play at an all-pro to MVP level if the guy
Starting point is 00:42:04 is healthy. Yeah. Now, eels and bears, I don't feel like there's anything that we can say about these quarterbacks that isn't obvious that we haven't talked about a million times, but it's a quarterback thing on both of those. The Lions, you just brought it up. This Jerry Golf thing is interesting, man, because like, again, the DeMerey against Matthew Stafford, the Lions seemed just fine switching you out for Jared Gough. I mean, it took a couple years, but nonetheless, he's just fine. Just fine. He's just fine. I, as a, you know, fan of the Detroit Lions, I don't complain about
Starting point is 00:42:36 the quarterback. I know how hard it is to go find one that's better than him, but I ain't happy about the quarterback either. Well, and I think that for a quarterback like Jared Goff, when we start talking about age cliffs and production cliffs, a player like him, I think, is much more susceptible to find in that sharp age cliff and production cliff than somebody who is more on the MVP spectrum, the way the people maybe been talking about someone like Lamar Jackson after the rough season that he had last year, a player like golf could 100% show up one day, just like Gino Smith did last year and in the second half of 2024 where all of a sudden all these passes that were completions over the middle of the field gaining 15 to 20 yards have now turned into
Starting point is 00:43:14 interceptions and now turning into batted passes. You're taking more sacks than usual. He would 100% could be susceptible to that. And I think that the other thing, while this isn't necessarily a demerit against Dan Campbell, since Ben's left, you take Ben out of the picture. It's just a lot of fire at OC's over there. If you look at what the offenses look like outside of Ben Johnson. So now I'm fascinated to see whether or not Dan Campbell can get another grasp on this offensive way that he had when he had his, what did you call him,
Starting point is 00:43:42 Big Brain Ben. Yeah, Big, hey, look, I just, I'm called a Big Brain Ben because after watching Dan without Ben, I was like, oh, that was Dan's idea. He likes that stuff just as much as Ben did. That was him doing that stuff. Because, I mean, look, he only fired one. Okay, no, he fired Anthony Lynn and then he got
Starting point is 00:43:58 Ben Johnson, and then he fired John Morton. Not to be confused with Johnny Morton. Right. But he fired John Morton. Yeah, we're going to see. Who did they hire this year? This is Drew Petting, who was with the Cardinals before. Yep, that sounds like an NFL officer coordinator.
Starting point is 00:44:15 That, that kind of day right there. If you Google it looks like one, too. I bet, I bet. Let me tell you something. Drew Petzing, I don't even need to see your pick. Like, well, you walk in for the first day. Are you, Drew? Okay.
Starting point is 00:44:30 There we go. Where are you on deck? I think I have been, I think I've been cooler on him than most of the people who are in the NFL tape grinder, intelligentsia. I think now I'm kind of starting to swing the other way where I feel like he gets dismissed far too often in these quarterback conversations and what I'm comfortable with. I don't think that he's an MVP quarterback. I think that the playoff and the playoff resume very similar to Justin Herbert now has been so rough against the actual contender. to make the argument that he can win you a big playoff game. But I watch him sometimes and I'm like,
Starting point is 00:45:09 why wouldn't he be able to? I don't understand why when I watch how he plays. Could I not say something similar about Josh Allen? 100%. 100%. I watch him and I'm like, this looks like every Super Bowl winning quarterback I've seen in my lifetime.
Starting point is 00:45:24 Why is this not happening? Why would we play the 49ers are we falling apart? He is like, to me, I'm curious what you think about this. I always say we throw the word franchise quarterback around Willie Nilly. There are starting quarterbacks.
Starting point is 00:45:40 And then there's another level to that, which is a franchise quarterback. Baker Mayfield, I think, is a great example of a starting quarterback who is not a franchise quarterback. On the low echelon of that is like Sam Darnell, who is there. I think Jalen Hertz is a mid-tier starting quarterback, but we have to talk about him like a franchise quarterback
Starting point is 00:45:57 because of the results that he's had. Right. I think that Prescott is at the tippy top of starting quarterback short of franchise quarterback. Like if you were to ask me who in the league right now counts as a franchise quarterback, I'm a pull the list up in front of me so I can have them. I would say Josh Allen is a franchise quarterback. I would say Lamar Jackson is a franchise quarterback.
Starting point is 00:46:21 I would say Joe Burrow. I think you get guys like Jordan Love where we're still waiting to figure that out. Right. Like they just still answer. This is a profile of a franchise quarterback. We just haven't seen him get over that. We just haven't seen him. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:46:36 Stafford, I think, has made himself into franchise quarterback space. You know, I think that's a fair one to say, obviously, the greatest quarterback I've ever seen is on that. Damn it, I forgot to put the Broncos on our list. And you know why I forgot to put the Broncos on our list? The part of the show that we're in now, I'm not buying it. You're not this Bo Nix thing. I'm not buying it. Oh, and Justin Herbert.
Starting point is 00:47:00 He's in there too. I forgot. another two teams that we could put on this list. Absolutely. And I think with Nix, it's 100% founded and saying, I'm not buying this. Because if they believe after the last two seasons they had, they wouldn't have traded away their first round pick to go get Jalen Waddle. They would have said our quarterback is enough to get us over this hump.
Starting point is 00:47:19 All right? The fact that they went out and thought they had to go get a pro-wall, all pro-level receiver tells you that we need to stack this deck as much as possible. So all Bo Nix has to do is wake up and walk in a straight line to get. us there. Hey, Knicks reminds me of the Knicks in the sense that if a couple things had got different, remembering the way that we were talking about him with one month left in the regular season, we're having entirely different conversations right now. Right? Absolutely. Right? Like the Knicks in basketball, they started playing really well. Right? But it was like,
Starting point is 00:47:54 yo, the vibes aren't great around this team, all of this. And they went on the run and it's like, okay, Denver gets to the conference championship in a game that quite honestly, nobody won, somebody just lost. It was a weird game to watch. But no, I'm still not seeing it. And I think that, and I wonder if it's the, what I thought about him coming out. I don't, I think people get a bad rap for this. No, I don't let go of my priors on this until later,
Starting point is 00:48:20 because there's something in my priors that is the reason that I feel like this is the thing. So if you had your priors about C.J. Stroud, for example, and then you saw him look really good as a rookie, chances are the things that we're saying now that are problems were tied in to your priors, right? Josh Allen had to show me that this wasn't just a fluke because it's still crazy that he improved in the way that he improved. That's just the nature of it.
Starting point is 00:48:46 Bo Nix, I think that there's a ceiling on how good he can be. I've seen nothing to tell me that that ceiling is not there. I mean, we had what, over a half decades worth of data coming into the league. I don't just get, I don't just dismiss that with two different programs, two great programs. I should say, he had two great offensive play callers in his time in college and he looked bad. Jalen Hertz, same thing. Same thing. And all the things that are, that were issues are still issues.
Starting point is 00:49:16 And I think that, you know, he is such, I find it, he is like the perfect quarterback to get people riled up. Yeah. Because there are so many quarterbacks that he is just objectively better than. Yes. And then there is a hard line of quarterbacks where he clearly cannot do what they do. And he just wins. Yeah. So there's really, the conversation just ends up being circular all the way across the board
Starting point is 00:49:36 because everybody is right. But you know who's interesting on the prior discussion to me is DAC? And the reason I say that is looking back on it. And I know he had the DUI. It is crazy that he was a fourth round pick. Yes. He was a first team, all conference player in Mississippi. he got Mississippi State to the Orange Bowl.
Starting point is 00:49:55 I know it because I saw those people on Collins in Miami the week of and I was like, no way. You guys are in the Orange Bowl? I would argue he is one of the best examples of a good player legitimately being held down because of the sticker on the side of his helmet. Because if you watched him at Mississippi State, that would have looked like a quarterback that you take a chance on at least in the top 100. You don't get to day three, right?
Starting point is 00:50:19 You might not be a first round pick, but a team would have certainly taken. him with the second or third had he not been just not one of the SEC powers. If that guy's at Auburn, if he's at Tennessee, somebody else is going to say, all right, the sticker on the side of his head says that he is going to be a first round pick or second round pick. I make two points. One, I've never heard anybody say it out loud, but the only conclusion that I can truly draw is that...
Starting point is 00:50:42 I know where you going. I know where you going. So for those of you who don't know, one year, that got his ass with about some white boys at Padabaw Bay City Beach, Florida. You got to be careful what you do, a spring break dog. Hey, he was out,
Starting point is 00:50:55 I think he was fighting barefoot, and he had like a proper stance, and he got tuned up, man. And I really do think that in front offices, there was a question as to whether or not you could have a quarterback that got tuned up like that.
Starting point is 00:51:08 It was any, look it up. I mean, it was an ass. It was a ass whooping, okay? Like, then he catch one of those where he had to like, yeah, he had to stumble real quick.
Starting point is 00:51:19 He got two, he got two. tuned up. And there's that part, number one, but number two to the discussion about priors, when he hits that ceiling of the playoffs, I'm like, well, you know, he was a fourth-round pick. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:51:33 Is that what's happened? Has he just so greatly over-achieved? And then the playoffs come, and it's like, he's a fourth-round pick. Brock Purdy, look like a seventh-round pick when it don't really be going right. That's the damn truth. That's a damn truth. And, you know, and they're all just good enough to pay, right?
Starting point is 00:51:49 Like, when I saw the deck press guy, I was getting 60 million annually. I'm like, I mean, I look at him in the, in the greater scheme of the rest of the league. And yeah, if your contract comes up at the right time and a team's got to pay you 60 million because that's market rate, Jack Prescott gets 60 million. Because what the hell else you're about to do? Same with Brock Party. Fifty three million. What I want to pay that? No. But if that's a going rate for a good starting quarterback fresh off a Super Bowl run, then yeah, I guess, you know, 53 million is just what is going to cost to bring these guys in. But they do definitely hit these hard ceilings. And then I think that with them, it gets even more confounding because then we have
Starting point is 00:52:22 these other guys who don't have the kind of reputation that they have yet that haven't gotten over the hump. You talk about Jordan Love, who you mentioned, who has an MVP ceiling, but hasn't gotten over that hump yet. I would say Justin Herbert, to a lesser extent, I think that his career has just been so stunted by either his poor play in big moments, inept coaching in big moments that we just really haven't gotten a fair evaluation. And because of that, people just dismiss him very similarly to some of the other quarterbacks that we're talking about in this hierarchy. And I think that the other guy that I'm just so fascinated with in this continuum, and I think that maybe the MVP has just taken him to a different place now. But you pointed out
Starting point is 00:53:01 all the time with people who root for Josh Allen, who root for the bills to get over the hump. And I just look at the body of work. And I started agreeing a lot with Nick Wright on that point It was like, this dude, he might kind of be a seventh seed, playing against the seventh seed merchant. He might be playing up against a six seed merchant. And when he plays up against great teams, sometimes the stat lines are good, but he just doesn't get over the hump.
Starting point is 00:53:22 Yeah, I watch all these games with Nick, right? And so, like, there's the obvious, there's the obvious, like, the Holmes rivalry thing, right? Because, you know, I love Nick, and we've talked about this for a long time. I don't always like how I feel would Nick be talking about Lamar. If I didn't know Nick, if I didn't know Nick as well as I know him, I would view things
Starting point is 00:53:41 to a much different lids, right? I've had to delete a few responses because I'm like, but he's not wrong. His track record is too pure for me to assume some of the things I want to assume based off of what I'm reading right now. But he's not wrong.
Starting point is 00:53:56 Like the thing about it is I hear what he says by large he's not wrong. But no, with Allen, normally by now a quarterback we say is as good as him and he hasn't won. We're like, so when you're going to do it as opposed to? I don't know, guys. I think this is the year.
Starting point is 00:54:08 I think we got it. I mean, and he's one of the few quarterbacks who's fresh off of a head coach got fired, disaster playoff game, and nobody's really talking about what you're going to do for me now. Oh, it's never on him. It's never on him. It's the damnedest thing. It's never on him. It's been on Lamar.
Starting point is 00:54:25 And look, Lamar has earned that with some objectively poor play into postseason. It's so crazy, though, if Mark Andrews catches that ball, because those guys let him down that year in Buffalo. If Mark Andrews catches that pass. Do we flip the way we talk about Josh Allen or are we just, well, I ain't really saying we, but or like, you know, are people still just rooting for Josh Allen to make it happen? Like, it's almost as though the fact that Buffalo has not made it there is an affront to Josh Allen, the disservice that has been hoisted upon him by his, by his teammates in the league and how dare the chief score in 13 seconds. Like somehow, scoring in 13 seconds is not, God damn, Patrick Mahomes. Right. It's poor Josh.
Starting point is 00:55:08 Yes. Every time. It's always poor Josh. It's always poor Josh. The year you're bringing up after Mark Angels drops that pass in the end zone and Josh Allen gets to take the Chiefs down to the fourth quarter and you end up blowing that fourth down and you don't get the quarterback sneak and everybody's talking about, well, how could you not pick up this blitz?
Starting point is 00:55:26 How are they not able to get this first down? The refs gave them the wrong spot. It really rarely ever comes back to, hey man, when they needed Josh Allen in the 24 AFC championship game, they didn't get the version of him that that I think that they were expecting. Yeah, look, my guy, Mike Greenberg said, Josh Al's the best quarterback he's ever seen.
Starting point is 00:55:45 I'm like, brother, did you even see Dan Marino? Right. Like, Dan Marino, the one that need to step up and be like, hey, fellas, you need to go turn. Yeah, go check the tape. That guy came from the future, right? Like, that guy. Like, Dan Marino can play right now,
Starting point is 00:55:58 slow as Christmas. Because let me tell you what, wasn't slow. That right there. Yeah, 100%. He's like, he's throwing a dart and that bitch go 50 yards down to field on a line. Yes.
Starting point is 00:56:09 No up. Just, it's like how people used to talk about seeing a pill of aspirin every time Nolan Ryan threw a passball. Yes. What was supposed to do with this? What are we going to do with this? The Ravens, I mean, they've got big coach story.
Starting point is 00:56:27 They made the change. I am shocked by the level of excitement that people have about John Harbaugh coaching the Giants because there's a reason they fired him. And they were to go to fire him eight years ago. Right. Right. Except Lamar came in and saved his job. Saved his job.
Starting point is 00:56:45 Right. So now they got a first year guy. They still mentors a Harbaugh guy, right? Because the Harbaugh brothers, and it's really weird. Switched coaches between them. Horle ball's not even there. And they went and got a Harbaugh guy. People speak very highly of him.
Starting point is 00:56:59 Remind me who they gave the offense to? Declan Doyle. Yeah. So I admit, all I know about him is who is. daddy is. His daddy is. That is not a positive. I want to be fair to deadly because it seemed like he has tried to carve out his
Starting point is 00:57:15 own space, but every time I see that last name, I'm like, ain't that dude whose pops was Yeah, his pops was the allegedly racist. Yeah, the allegedly racist strife coach at Iowa. Dude talking about players locks in the weight room at Iowa and where he going to send them back to. I mean, they basically had a revolution that actually worked. Yes. The dude basically ended up on Urban Meyer staff
Starting point is 00:57:39 Because everybody tried to hire him And they were like What the fuck are you just No get this motherfucker out there This is the big leagues dog We gotta put up with this It's people in this locker room That will put their hands on this man
Starting point is 00:57:51 Yeah yeah yeah Like in the pros They can beat up the strength coach Like in college Strength coach put their hands on you In the pros They might got a chance It's an edge rush or offensive tackle
Starting point is 00:58:03 Right now like I can take that fine Yeah That little conduct detrimental to the team, I'll take that 200K fine. The problem is if you do beat up the strep coach, ain't nobody really trying to tell you that you got fine. And you can't tell me to do four sets of nothing.
Starting point is 00:58:17 If I know somebody in here that's putting hands on you, you go get on that treadmill boss. Talking to me about my weight. Yeah, you're fat ass out of my face. But I will say this, as much as you and I think is preposterous that people think that, like you're just going to get another Lamar, Jackson. If I were Lamar Jackson, I would
Starting point is 00:58:39 try to leave no doubt about this. Absolutely. Absolutely. This needs to be a 20-23 type of season for Lamar, 2024 type of season for Lamar, where you can come back and say, hey, whatever the biggest number is, you're going to add a couple million to that and then hand that to me.
Starting point is 00:58:55 For five, six years, all right? You need to be talking about my homes level deals. I want something that I can give off to my grandkids, grandkids. That's the type of money that I need. Now, as we wrap this, The name that I did not mention because I don't think they are a Super Bowl contender, the best team in the league for the last eight seasons, without question, has been the Kansas City Chiefs.
Starting point is 00:59:19 Patrick Mahomes is coming off of an ACL tear after what was clearly his worst season and the team's worst season. He has not played as well the last two or three years as he had played in the four or five previous. I don't think there's any question about that, though. Some of that has to do with supporting cast. I think that in this day and age, because ACL tears are not as devastating as they used to be, I think we undersell a bit that it is still an ACL tear. There's still a process in terms of coming back. I personally have no idea what we are going to get out of him and his team that is getting old.
Starting point is 00:59:57 I don't think there's anything left of Tragel. It ain't just the team. The man is not 26 years old. anymore. He ain't 27 anymore. I kind of had to recalibrate for a second after he signed his extension. I was like, oh shit, that's right. This dude's going to be in his mid-30s pretty soon.
Starting point is 01:00:15 Right? Like, he's already over that age-30 threshold and fresh off an ACL tear. I'm not so quick to assume that anybody can be like Tom Brady coming off an ACL tier going into their age-30 season. I don't know what to expect, like, what this Chief's thing
Starting point is 01:00:30 is. Because again, guys, you know, cats who are ahead of the game, and then the game catches up to them. Andy Reid, line one. Yes, 100%. And shit, sometimes it ain't even the scheme. Just go look at the depth chart. You go look at their depth chart
Starting point is 01:00:45 and judge it up against some of the other teams that we've been asking questions about whether or not they should genuinely have expectations to win. The chiefs are worse than a lot of contenders across multiple positions on both sides of the ball. And I think that for all the, I think that there's been a lot of conversation about, oh, we're bringing Eric Bien of me back
Starting point is 01:01:02 to be the offensive coordinator, and that's supposed to improve things and we're holding people accountable. I don't think accountability is the problem. I think they have a guys can't get open problem. I think they have a defense a as loaded as it used to be a problem. And now we're still asking Patrick Mahones to be a superhero.
Starting point is 01:01:21 That to me is a much bigger conversation than anything else. And you add on top of what you just said with Andy Reid, maybe kind of being left behind by the current meta in this league, because he has always been an air raid. I don't want to spread it out. get more, you know, get more passes off. We're going to be in the gun. All of that stuff has been much more of Andy Reed story
Starting point is 01:01:39 for the last decade than ever trying to keep up with what was going on with the Shanahan and McVaytree. Yeah, now this is a truly fascinating NFL season. I think that is the best way to we could tournament. I think we managed to get through all the teams. We got through all the quarterbacks. We did great work there, baby. That was, that was.
Starting point is 01:01:56 And got it done under an hour. That's a pros work with the Lakers. With throwing some Lakers in there. That's what I'm talking about, man. Deontay Lee, check him out at the Rangor covering football for them. My brother, I greatly appreciate you. Thank you for having me. All right, man.
