I'm inclined to believe you are a hater.
And, you know, like, my guy Ryan,
it's a very interesting year to have Ryan in this seat that he is in, right?
Because first of all, when Ryan started doing the job
and we got to the NFL and then at one moment,
it dawned on me because Ryan is from Lafayette,
I was like, wait a minute, you rule for the saints, don't you?
And he said yes, which, you know,
I don't know how it would have worked if I knew that before.
But, you know, now that you hear,
no one's perfect.
Yeah, yeah, we're just going to have some experiences.
Now, LSU is interesting because I generally enjoy LSU
and find them to be entertaining.
I love the less miles years.
That barely seemed like it was real.
But then LSU hired someone who exhibits the characteristics
of a loathsome jackass whom I have discussed
as though he is a loathsome jackass for over a decade.
And now, by the way,
Ryan discussed him like he was a loathsome jackass and then started coaching his team.
What?
What are you talking about?
I cannot confirm her to not.
No idea, right?
But like, now we're here.
He is currently, regardless, he is currently my loathsome jackass.
There he is.
There he is.
He is the coach of your team for this first month of the season.
He is the right kind of star of the show in terms of what there's been to talk about in college football.
and that changed on Saturday night.
The star of college football is no longer Lane Kiffin.
It is now Heisman Trophy Frontrunner,
though I acknowledge it's early,
Trinidad Chambers.
I don't think there's any question about this.
This is how the sausage is made in this day and time, right?
National television game,
the biggest game so far of this season,
and I'm not sure if there will be
a bigger game that has a bit more of an anticipation around it.
There may be games that have to do a higher television number,
but I'm not sure if there's going to be a game that has a higher,
like, fervent, a fever pitch that we've got developed going in
until Ohio State Indiana on October the 8th, 17th, I think it is.
Something like that, yeah, mid-October.
Yeah, yeah.
But I think up until then, this is the one.
And unlike Ohio State Indiana, nobody was talking about
that game all offseason.
This one got the treatment all the way up until now.
And then it was augmented by the fact that LSU played Clemson.
And that was kind of the prime time game for week one,
not to be confused with week zero, but for week one.
And so it just all built to this game that I am not enough of a historian
to say if it's the biggest game in Ole Miss history.
but I would definitely say it is the Ole Miss game
with the highest national profile ever.
Okay.
Ole Miss won this game 24 to 32.
Hot take time.
And I really, I don't even know if it's so much a hot take,
but after the game and the post game,
Lane Kiffin in classic Lane Kiffin fashion,
discussed the environment at the stadium.
And for those of you who don't know,
Ole Miss has a famous tailgating scene
and somewhat ironically
has a HBCU tendency
of people enjoying the party outside
more than they would the game inside.
Therefore, they stay at the party outside.
Ole Miss be looking like the guy there's CIAA.
When ESPN tried to broadcast the CIAA on TV,
it was so embarrassing
because all those people were there,
but none of them was at the games.
look like practice.
Like it just was in the seats and they kept having to explain,
well, you know, the blacks are outside of barbecue and you drink a crown royal.
Oh, this, ironically, very similar situation.
Probably sitting outside also drinking Crown Royal.
Yes, yes.
Now, Lane said after the game that he had quite the environment,
said the steeds were full an hour before the game.
he said, I guess this is what it would take for them to do that.
And he said that, Ryan, I believe he said, you're welcome.
Yes.
Because this is something that Lane had complained a lot about was them doing that.
And then Lane said that.
And he said, you're welcome.
And you know what?
He might, not saying he is, he might be a loathsome jackass.
But he's right.
And not only is he right.
That game made it very clear that he is the best thing to ever happen to that football team,
the best thing to ever happen to that program, quite possibly the best thing to ever happen to that university.
That argument is there clearly, and it makes it even more ridiculous that he left in the fashion in which he left.
Okay, hear me out here.
When I did the Vanity Fair piece on Chamble's, which one day,
one might argue is the beginning of a
high spin campaign.
One can make the argument.
I'm just saying, like every now and then,
you know, it's not every day that one of America's foremost sports
riders comes to Oxford.
Actually, it is every day that one of America's four bowl sports writers goes to
Oxford, Mississippi, because Wright Thompson is right down there.
He's right there.
But it's not every day that one this handsome shows up and gets the ball rolling all this.
I still have your Vanity Fairs, by the way.
Oh, but it's funny.
They sent me some too.
We need to.
You know what we can do, though?
We could do some sort of giveaway maybe or some way where we can sign those that you got a couple of them and get them to the people that might, you know, want to get some of them, right?
Just letting you guys know, we got some vanity fairs over here.
Anyway, when I did that piece, the thing that was interesting and very clear to me, every Chamblis that I talked to, and I talked to a lot of Chamblis, every Chamblis that I talked to a lot of Chambligh, every Chamblis that.
every Chambliss that I talked to
had a positive opinion of Lane Kiffin.
Every single one of them did.
And I mean, why wouldn't they?
Their son was playing Division II football
and next thing they knew,
their son was making millions of dollars
and poised for an NFL career
that literally none of them had pictured
prior to this.
They are all in on Lane in that way.
The most interesting thing that I learned
in the reporting of that,
and I've talked about this.
Tom Mars, who represented Trinidad in his lawsuit against the NCAA,
and I believe is also just generally Lane Kiffin's lawyer.
I asked Tom Mars, because he told me that Kiffin referred Chambliss to him for his case.
Now, keep in mind, they knew this was going to come up,
the eligibility questions around Chambliss.
I don't think they thought the NCAA were rubber stamp,
but at the same time, this was always on the board, right?
It was December 19th was the date that Mars told me that Kiffin brought Chambliss this way,
which is to say after this LSU decision had been made, okay?
One could cynically make the argument that Lane did that just in case
Chambliss wanted to come with him, right?
But it doesn't really matter, I don't think.
He didn't have to do it, and he did it.
and that is a big part of LSU, excuse me,
Ole Miss being in the position that they are in right now.
The program had its longest period of sustained success with Kiffin there.
Like if nothing else, he changed the profile and the ambitions of the program, right?
Like what seemed possible.
All of that changed.
with Kiffin being there.
And the part that he just brought up, and he's right,
they never got that charged up.
If it wasn't for him behaving like a loathsome jackass on the way out
and getting everybody all excited about this.
Right?
So now they have got a solid football program
that looks like it has the potential to perhaps win the SEC.
Definitely on the board.
It's on the board.
Well, what's on the board, because of the way it goes now, you get yourself a good enough regular season record and you get to the championship game because not everybody's playing the same schedule.
You know, get yourself there, and then you just got to win one, and you've got that guy.
Right?
Because the other part of this is my fault, I forgot about this, before having one of America's great sports writers profiled a young man, he had the incredible college football playoff the year before.
So this all builds up.
We have evidence that he's this dude.
It's right there directly in front of us.
They can pull this off.
And this doesn't really happen without Lane Kippen.
Hey, man, two of the best quarterbacks in the SEC were on Ole Miss's roster last year.
Austin Simmons has looked good for Missouri so far.
That was supposed to be the starter.
Right.
Last year.
That's Lane, right?
You have to give them the credit.
This is what I found interesting in watching this game.
And Ryan, you tell me if I'm wrong here.
I felt like LSU was beating Ole Miss in the way that LSU should beat
Ole Miss, which is being a bit bigger and a bit stronger and pounding them on the ground.
Right?
Like I felt like when LSU decided to run the ball, it looked like what all things kind of held equal,
LSU versus Mississippi should look like.
Right.
A little bigger, a little stronger,
but they also,
Ole Miss out gained them in the air by over 200 years.
Well, yeah, yeah, see, that's where,
that's where this is going to get,
this is where the lane of it all gets interesting, right?
The reason or the argument
for going to LSU over Ole Miss
is the ability to more readily put together
a big strong football team that win championships.
Right, like those, those, those,
that next tier of schools,
and for purposes of this discussion,
I'm putting Oregon on that level, right?
Oregon is not a traditional power.
Oregon's always had to gimmick it up just a little bit,
and they're trying to do it the SEC way.
That's why you hire Lanting,
but we've seen how that can go for them, right?
But those schools that are not up there like that
typically got to do some razzle dazzle
in order to make it happen.
LSU is like, or we could just line it up and go.
Right.
And on the other side, we could rush four and drop seven
because we should be able to give players that good
who are able to do that.
And LSU, when they ran the ball,
demonstrated, oh, this is why you would leave Ole Miss
to go to LSU.
But the reason why you wouldn't do that
is because Old Miss had Trinidad Chambliss
and you had Sam Levin.
Yes.
Now, I am asking you this,
Because to me, Levy looked not good.
He is not good.
Okay.
And Lane did that weird shit during the week where they said he was doubtful,
then he was questionable, then he wasn't even on the injury report.
So for all I know, he out there with a toe cut off.
I have no idea, right?
Or you might have an extra toe.
Who knows with Lane out here?
However, he had a team that was good enough to win a national championship last year.
or at very least good enough to play for a national championship last year
and a team that had that level of quarterback.
And he left that for a team where he knew he was going to have a worse quarterback.
You have a Heisman caliber quarterback in everything that you built around him
with Kiwan Lacey, with all those things.
And forget the middle of the year part.
you walked away from that for LSU.
So here's what you did.
You walked away from a chance to win a championship
because you thought the other place could give you
a better chance to win a championship,
even though the place you were at
gave you a better chance to win a championship right now.
You see what I'm saying?
Like, you were the best thing to happen at that school
and you might be so good a thing to happen to that school
that Pete Golding, a man that no other,
school would have hired for that same job, could have a chance to play for the SEC, which
you did not do, or play for a national championship in large part because of you. But you went
somewhere else where being you right now might not be good enough. Do I have this right?
I see, I think you're making a great point. Yeah, like, like, this is, it's so bizarre on that level.
And by the way, again, all of this having to do with Lane Kiffin even involves some benevolence from that potentially loathsome jerk.
What an oldly in college football kind of night that you wound up with.
Also I want to say this, right fast, because we talked about when they did the broadcast in Texas and they did the eyes of Texas thing that I hate it and everything else.
but it does seem that ESPN is leaning in heavy on the pageantry before these games.
And I don't need the national anthem, though I am curious.
Do they only allow black men with bellies to get in sailor suits and sing the national anthem?
Because I feel like every time I see a black man singing the national anthem is always a brother with a little pudge in a sailor suit.
I'll never see no white man in a sailor suit
seen the national anthem.
I don't know why.
And look, I want to be very clear.
It's always adorable.
It doesn't matter what age you are.
You'll be 55 years old.
They put you in a sailor suit.
It looks exactly the same as it did
when you were 24 months in that sailor suit.
Shane, the village people are adorable too?
Yeah, well, let me ask you this as a serious question.
when the Navy like take their boats and they pull it up on another country ready for action,
do they be wearing sailor suits?
Because that made me our greatest weapon ever.
You pull up on me on a sailor suit.
I'll never think it's a war.
I mean, look at those cutie-tooties getting off that boat.
Hey, is that a gun?
What just happened?
I don't have a great concept of naval warfare,
but I imagine since we are not in the canon pirate ship error,
that they cannot,
the other ships cannot see the sailor suits.
But I'm just saying, even back in the day,
was they pulling up on people in sailor suits and hitting them with harpoons?
I just don't.
I just,
I just,
I just wouldn't be afraid.
Maybe that's the art of deception.
I don't know.
But anyway, they have brother in the sailors suits,
see the last,
like they build up the big game of it all now.
Because you and I, we both agree.
nobody shoot a game better than CBS.
And the thing to me about the way CBS does the game is they don't even have to do that
to manufacture.
No.
All the rest of the stuff.
And I'm not saying that it's a judgment of ESP.
And I'm saying that game felt like a really big deal.
And I think the NBA with their mistakes have really informed for a lot of people the importance
of like building the stakes up for that game.
And they were there.
And you're right, Lane.
You're welcome.
Couldn't have done it without you.
And the best part of buy you.
And the best part about it is, not that LSU lost, you lost.
Behind every night spent making the kids' lunches, there's a lot of suspense.
Will they finally eat the veggies?
Will the pasto survive the first bite?
Will the lunchbox come home empty, half full, or come home at all?
And will you finish episode 8 before you're done slicing the cucumbers?

Speaking of losing.
For those of you who might be new here, I have to remember these things, Ryan,
because it's been 13 years now, but I lived in North Carolina for 10 years.
I've been gone for 13 years.
That is crazy.
But I don't get the feeling that nationally people have a great handle on like what it means
to root for North Carolina State.
And I don't blame you if you don't.
And maybe the Internet made the world smaller,
and you can see, like, some of the things.
But they got this thing that they call up there,
and it's called NC State shit.
And, I mean, that's literally what it's called, like TM, you know?
And no matter what goes down, NC State, this, NC State at, man,
some NC State shit happened.
you know and the thing that I find interesting about that is as I was going back
I didn't have and I think that I mean it goes across sports too but I didn't have that many
like particular individual like plays that jumped out like when you talk about the misery
of Cleveland sports there were plays their moments right out right or is the drive
it's the fumble it's you know they got all all kinds of names the shot yeah yeah exactly
Like they had those things.
I didn't, and I could just not be remembering, but like NC State, it doesn't jump to the top of my mind.
Like, oh, man, it was always this one thing.
But baby, they got a thing to last forever.
Now, this is also the season where they got to head football coach Dave Doran, who is perfectly fine.
And the thing is, and I don't blame state fans for this, because if you're not a fan, people are like,
why aren't you happy with personally perfectly fine when sorry is right around.
the corner and always feasible for you guys. And it's because they don't like perfectly fine.
They would like to be better than that. And you may think that they have no business believing
that they should be, but they want to be. And I think that's perfect. Like,
you should want more than perfectly fine. And they've had perfectly fine for everything over a
decade. No, they don't, they don't want that anymore. And it's coming into this year with a
desire for a little bit more. Now, understand this. Perfectly fine gets you this, Ryan. They have not
won a road game against a power conference team in 24 years.
The quarterback was Philip Rivers, and he wasn't even a senior.
That's wild. Yes. I think Philip Rivers, I think he only had one kid, but I do think he had
one. Yeah, like you said, it was a long time ago. It's been a long time. It's been a long time.
At the very least, he was on his way. So anyway, they played against Vanderbilt, which, you know, counts as a
power conference team better than they've been.
ever been, whatever. They're up 31, 28. What is it, like 10 seconds left in the game?
Six seconds left. They've got the ball in the shadow of their own gold pose. And they were going
to do one of those things that I find is interesting, which is sometimes you spend your whole life not
really giving a lot of thought as to why something is called what it's called. But what they were going to
do was take a safety. And you know what? It's like, oh, that's why they call it a safety. They were
basically going to surrender on 16 in blackjack. We are up by three points. So we will get the ball
and we will down it in the end zone and give them two points and then have a free kick. And then there
will not be enough time for them to get the ball back. Now what is very clear is that in the huddle,
their quarterback was told that you're going to get the ball and you're going to run around until
there's no time. And then you go down and then voila. The game's over. I don't understand why you
would need that last part because there were only six seconds.
Here's what an option was.
Snap it into the fourth row.
Or punt.
And if it gets blocked, you know what the worst thing that can happen is?
Well, they can recover it in the end zone.
But more than likely, it goes out of the back of the end zone and it's a safety.
I hear you.
I hear you.
I hear you.
But the problem with what you just said right there is you have forgotten the whole premise of
why we're here in the first place, which is NC State shit.
Okay.
So if you're NC State, there's no way you can punt this.
In fact, what you're saying is affirming the madness of it all, right?
You needed to diminish the possibilities of this NC Station happen.
Now, what they thought was if you run the clock out, that is what is diminishing the possibility
of the NC Station monster for rising up.
No, no, no.
What you had to do was put your knee down yourself.
How that young man allowed himself to be tackled.
I have no idea, but he did allow himself to be tackled.
And he fumbled.
And Vanderbilt recovered and won a game that they had not had the lead in all game.
And then hold up, Ryan.
This is where it gets even more interesting.
The score was 31 to 28.
But they had to replay it at the end.
And they found that they had to put one more second on the clock.
which allowed enough time for an extra point,
which allowed Vanderbilt to cover.
Yes.
So if you rooted for NC State and you bet on NC State,
you, it's one thing to get kicked in the nuts.
It's another thing to get kicked in each nut individually
with the force of a two-nut kick.
you understand what I'm saying?
Like, that was, like, they really was like,
yo, this hurts really bad,
but at least it was just one nut.
And then they got them on the, on the El Segundo.
And all I'm saying to all you NC State fans is,
you don't have to keep doing this.
I'm just saying, and if you choose to, that's fine.
You're not a, generally speaking,
you're not a sympathetic bunch.
I have warmed to understanding your perspective in this world,
but you guys are not.
You're only people that like you is each other.
And you know this already, right?
Like, I'm just, I'm not, I'm just telling you, right?
It's not, all I'm saying is you're doing this to yourself.
And if you would like to stop doing this, you can.
And this is a great opportunity for you.
help me help you.
That's what we're,
that's what we're doing right now
because that's rough, man.
That's rough, that's rough.
I know y'all mad at the coach
and I can see why you would be,
but damn, man,
I bet he mad at everybody too.
Like, that's the thing right there.
You want to talk about some shit
that looked like a 20-man Spider-Man meme.
Talk about everybody pointing at,
everybody blaming each other.
It's just going all over the place.
It's a tough go.
But, but, but,
but I don't know.
I was going to say it could have been worse.
I don't know. I don't think so.
I don't know that actually.
Yeah, now that I think about it,
perhaps I should have done this show
in a slightly different order
that would have allowed for it could have been worse,
but it actually could have been more hilarious.
Actually, no, I actually do think
that what we're going to talk about is worse.
Okay. So I looked on Twitter right fast on Saturday
and I went past something and it was a tweet from
Kyle Field, Texana,
and it said, I couldn't tell exactly what it said,
but it had some white man in a golf shirt.
And then I saw the handle was at SEC War.
And because I wasn't paying close attention,
I thought SEC War was like a SEC blog.
Right.
Or something like that, right?
Or maybe an Auburn blog, right?
War Eagle.
I just wasn't paying that much attention.
I just want to be clear about this.
Before we came on to record this,
I actually saw what that tweet was,
and it was a video of the Secretary of Defense,
because I don't say it at Pete Headset,
and he was pumping his fist and shit, right?
Let me make sure I get this score right,
because Kentucky came to Texas A&M,
which is a top 10 team,
and Kentucky beat them by 10 points on their own soil.
Marcel Reed had an awful game,
they wrecked them.
I don't think there's any other way to put this.
They put the hurt on them in this stadium
that on one hand is a very difficult place to play,
but on the other hand, you get to play against the Aggies.
Having that man out there was the most aggy thing in the world.
Like, if Ted Cruz wasn't such bad luck,
they would have had him out there,
but Texas won in spite of him.
That's how you know Texas might be the best.
best team in the country. They overcame Ted Cruz. But anyway, having Pete Hed Seth out there,
super Aggie. Losing this game, also super Aggie. And you know why? You don't get to eight and a
half wins by winning them all. You got to give back some of those that aren't supposed to go
that way. And there they go, right there, all the way. Go going to that thing. That,
look, it's a weird week, man, where we got Ole Miss out here beating LSU and looking like
one of the best teams in the country.
You understand what I'm saying?
But those other two things, that's just to let you know, ain't nothing really changed, right?
Like, the order, the fundamental order of the universe remains.
Like, it's still there.
Apparently, these teams need to go get them a lane kiffing.
Maybe that'll, maybe that'll change your situation.
But I, and look, I know it's a little different in Aggie world right now, I just don't
don't know who it was that looked at Pete Headset and was like, hell yeah, that'll get to people
going. Can you read polls? You know what I mean? Like, these are not popular people.
Have you, are you aware of what he's in charge of and what people think about it?
It was the last time you bought a gallon of gas. Yes, sure. I'll tell you, it's been a long time
since I did it. But I looked at the numbers on one of those pumps one day. And I, I didn't think those were,
I didn't think that was in dollars.
It's going to be like, remember we're talking about the scoreboard at the ACC tournament in Tampa?
Yes.
That's what a gas is going to be like.
They're going to have to add a fourth digit.
Right.
Right.
This is going to have a Y2K problem.
Yeah.
With the gas pumps.
Yeah.
Oh, but hey, ladies and gentlemen, guess what?
