Got the horsey on his shirt, Paff 40.
I know Paff 40 is also like me.
You are a horsey enthusiast.
That's right.
It's actually Breeders Cup this one.
week. Zero point zero percent of the public cares, but that's a big event in the horse racing world.
No, the thing is, I guess you've lived in Kentucky now for who knows how long. It is one of those
things that everybody knows about, but the world doesn't really care as much about, but it is
the thing for you guys. Oh, yeah, no. I mean, you can find people that will talk horses,
bet horses, breed horses, buy horses every day all year round. They barely even notice that there's
football or basketball going on. I mean, I am not that person.
But those people exist.
To be fair to them, generally speaking, noticing football has never been that big a thing in Kentucky,
except this year those guys got the coach right.
It's unbelievable.
Absolute, you know, Grand Slam higher getting Will Stein, who was the offensive coordinator at Oregon.
And that's one of those where you can tell when the place he's going gets really good
and the place he left falls apart.
He's a pretty good coach.
Oregon's a disaster now.
Well, no, we're in one of those steps.
point of season now where right now it's about the people that aren't doing it. Like I don't feel
like we have great feel good. Like, oh, wow, these guys are doing so much better than we thought this
year. But we have a gang of you guys are disappointing us. It's across the board, you guys are
disappointing us. We'll get a little bit later to like the ultimate disappointing for people is,
you know, when it gets to the place of somebody getting fired. But Oregon is an interesting one because
nothing has gone the way people thought it would. And we knew it early when they lost to Oklahoma
State, but to be fair to them, Oklahoma State turned out to be better than we thought and might
have the best quarterback in the country. Now, that's the feel-good story if anybody wants to get to it.
But with Oregon, what have you seen? It's been a full system failure, mostly offense, which is why
they fired their offensive coordinator this week after scoring a whopping 10 points against Illinois.
Their last three games have scored 15, 17, and 10 at a place that was known for lighting up the
scoreboard. That's not going to cut it. So they lost both coordinators from last year.
Tosh Lupoi went to be the head coach at Cal. That hadn't gone real well. And then they lost
Will Stein. It's going very well for him at Kentucky. They did have a quarterback injury to Dante
Moore, part of a quarterback class that really, frankly, is falling apart if you're looking at it
from an NFL perspective.
And they just say they had Dylan Raola as a backup,
a five-star former national player of the year,
but he hasn't performed terribly well.
And it just, the whole thing looks adrift right now.
They've lost the edge that Oregon used to have.
They had some off-the-field issues,
got their top-wide receiver suspended,
and everybody suddenly looking,
Dan Lanning was one of those guys
who walked around acting like he had all the answers.
and it looked like he did.
And now this year he kind of has none of them.
And it's not saying the bloom is off the rose,
but all of a sudden people are looking at this and saying,
was this a Willstein operation or is this a Dan Lanning operation?
So I want to put a pin in Lanning,
but make this point about Rayola.
For people who don't remember this,
Rayola's father played at Nebraska.
And it was a very big deal for Nebraska to get him,
as is often the case when you have a legacy player
who's a really big deal.
But if you can't get that guy, you get into the old buddy, right?
Can we get anybody sort of situation?
They got him.
Well, nothing at Nebraska's worked out like they thought he would under Matt Rule.
But it hasn't, it didn't go well.
He left.
And now I'm starting to wonder, did he just fool us by doing that Patrick Mahomes cosplay
that we taught ourselves into believing that maybe he was Patrick Mahomes?
Well, you know, he put a lot of fancy passes on tape.
Doesn't mean he put enough routine good passes on tape.
And I think that's kind of been the thing, is he can he just stand in the pocket or even really even escape a rush and be reliable and accurate all the time as opposed to in the occasional no look, three quarter arm, sidearm thing.
You know, there's a lot of quarterbacks right now who are highly rated who are really struggling.
And whether that is they were overrated, there was bad evaluations, or whether they were thrown in two.
quickly into the college game and that maybe broke their confidence like raola brys underwood
some of these other guys they were starters from game one freshman year maybe that was too much too soon
uh but he has just not shown what people thought he was capable of one thing i've you know
i've heard some people say is that at this point in his career he doesn't move very well in the
pocket and you can game plan to if you keep him there you can pummel him so
just a lot of things where the warts are showing up on quarterbacks all over the country.
But Raula's been an interesting one.
I'll give him credit for one thing, Beaumani.
He came in in relief when of Moore and started against UCLA.
And he was the worst quarterback you've ever seen.
I mean, he was awful.
And he actually came in, did the press cons afterwards, said, yeah, I need to be here.
I should be here.
You know, I have respect for the whole process.
I need to own being terrible.
He's been a little better since then, but clearly not good.
enough. Is there a question to be asked about pushing these young guys to start? And of course,
everybody wants to go somewhere where they know they're going to play right away. That's a big
deal. But I'm wondering if the fact that now these guys are also getting paid millions of
dollars and nobody wants to pay millions of dollars for somebody not to play. And I'm wondering
how many quarterbacks are going to wind up being broken. Like the Bryce Underwood thing,
it seems clear, he probably didn't need to play right away, right? And I think it's kind of a
hindsight thing because I don't think we looked at them last year and thought, man, he just
absolutely shouldn't be playing. And it looks awful this year. And to be fair, there were people
who called it before the season that it was going to look this way. But I'm wondering if this
money is going to wind up being, I mean, the NFL guys are already talking about the fact that
these three straight draft classes they feel like are not going to turn out the way that they
thought they would. But if this game is actually going to break some of these guys just because
they're getting so much money so early. Sure. Absolutely. I think that's a concern. And I,
You know, it's difficult.
If you're the coach, general manager, athletic director of a team,
and you, like, if you go buy a really nice car, do you want to put it in the garage?
You want to drive it.
You want to take it out and let's go.
It's different with human beings getting them out there and throwing them in a quarterback.
And at 18 or 19 years old, being immediately named the starter,
having an immediate $3 million in your bank account,
and having everybody expecting you to play like a $3 million player from the,
jump, it's asking a lot. And I think it does. It increases the pressure on them,
increases the expectations and increases the likelihood that when things don't go right,
they don't handle it well. Right. Now, you mentioned Dan Lanning and he did seem like,
to be fair, it looked like Dan Lanning had lots of answers, right? Like that is,
Oregon's an interesting job because he's a defensive guy that took that job. But that is to me,
like Florida West. They want points, man. They like to light it up on the scoreboard. And it's a
place where historically it hasn't been that easy to put together a defense because it's tough to
get the athletes there that you need to put together a defense. Like, I don't know if people remember
this, but when they played for that national championship in 2010, they had a defensive tackle
that was 255 pounds. Like, you just had to play a different kind of football over there to win.
But are seasons like these just kind of going to be one that everybody just about has to deal with
every now and then because of the way the teams are being constructed? Like kind of like
Calipari started doing the one and done in Kentucky. And every now then, you were,
going to have a dudge. Shosheski had the same thing
happened to him at Duke that when you try to put these teams
together on the fly every now and then
it's just not going to come together.
Yeah, real quick about that 2010
team, by the way, they were playing Auburn.
I went into that game like, Oregon
can win. And then I saw them all
at Media Day in the flesh. I'm like,
oh, no, they're too small. They're too small.
So I'm with you on that.
But no, you're absolutely right.
Yes, look, it is to a
degree you're playing roulette.
sometimes the ball bounces in where you want it to. Sometimes it doesn't. And you make some decisions
with personnel when you are building and rebuilding every single year that don't work out. You know,
all of a sudden, you've just, you've got three guys that weren't as good as you thought they were going to be.
You get a couple injuries here or there. You don't have as much depth because players are moving
around because they want playing time. And things fall apart on you. And I think more and more now,
especially when you come in with high expectations,
one loss, things start to wobble really hard.
Two losses.
Everybody loses their mind and panics,
and you can see a season completely collapsed.
We saw that with Penn State last year.
We've seen it with Texas A&M in Oregon this year.
The one thing with this Oregon team, though,
retention was huge.
They kept a bunch of guys.
So it shouldn't be happening this way there.
Yeah, I'll give this to Lannick also.
He appears to be figuring out how you've got to manage it
in terms of the public when you deal with this sort of losing because we've got other guys around
the country that we can talk about, one of whom is the one guy that Dan Lannick has been able to
get a one-up on this year, which is Lincoln Riley, right?
I still need to get to the bottom of that Chris Brown concert.
That thing, whatever that was, really affected Dan Lannick.
He was like, you could come to Oregon or you could go to USC and go to a Chris Brown concert.
Damn.
Okay.
Got it.
But Riley, it costs $70 million to get him out of there.
So it feels very unlikely that he's going anywhere.
So is everybody just going to be miserable and unhappy?
I mean, they will be miserable and unhappy if he's still there, I think.
I'll say this, Saturday is huge.
They're playing an Ohio State team with no quarterback
or with a quarterback who's never taken a meaningful snap in college.
They lose that one.
It's the last stand.
You're out of the playoff for this year.
You're probably out of the playoff already.
you're certainly out then. And then I think everybody just totally gives up on Lincoln Riley.
70 million is a lot. I've had some people say USC's, you know, got more rich people than about
anybody they can make it work. But that is, that is a ridiculous sum. I'm already promoting the
parachute theory that Lincoln Riley goes to Baylor, goes back to his home state, and just gets out.
Now it would require him walking away from that much money, as opposed to saying, just go ahead and
fire me and let me collect, but I would not be shocked if he looks for an escape hatch before he
gets fired. Now, do you know if he has a James Franklin buyout or Brian Kelly buyout,
which is to say, is it a you got to give me my 70 all right now or we pay it out by the
week like we would have otherwise? I'm not sure. Part of your private school. So people haven't
seen the contract. But that's a key distinction certainly. It's like when, when would
the money be available because Lincoln Riley's pretty young. He's not going to like give up coaching.
Right. He's not going to sit out for like three years. So if there's an offset or a mitigation in there,
it might make it easier for him to just say, look, I'm going to, this is all going to go away eventually.
I'll jump now. Yeah, because I have to, looking back on it, as crazy as it seen when Penn State fired,
frankly, because of the buyout. If your understanding was this is a young man who wants to still work another job,
then it made perfect sense that you go ahead and do it. When you do it,
Brian Kelly, you're just saying, we can't take this anymore, right?
But Lincoln Riley's not going to be Ed Ogeron.
Where Ed O'Jarond got that buyout and none of us ever thought that we'd ever see that man
do another day of work ever, like not a real day work.
He's crazy.
What are you talking about?
I've done everything I ever wanted to do.
Riley, no, not at that place.
And also, this season has the potential to end in full-on disaster for them because they've got
Ohio State at home.
They've got to buy.
They've got to go to Indiana.
They got Maryland, so that's a bit of a break.
But then they closed the season against surprising UCLA at UCLA.
If that ends,
four in a row on the way out the door,
as Dave Doran learned at North Carolina State,
they fire you when it just doesn't feel good to them for you to be around.
It's not even about what,
it's not fully about your performance or anything else.
They just don't want to see your face anymore.
And with Riley, it seems that nobody.
he wants to see his face anymore and he's a guy that's terrible at handling it when is bad.
Terrible at handling it. That's the thing. You know, not, not somebody that I think rallies the
troops well, doesn't necessarily handle it gracefully with the public or with the media. And he's just
got to sit there and take it. And that's the thing. And as you pointed out, look, what's happening
across town only spikes the level of unrest there when
Bob Chesney can come in and be undefeated and have a quarterback injury and have a bunch of guys that came with him from James Madison doing this.
It makes you look pretty darn bad when Lincoln Riley sat there and said at Big Ten Media Day in July, we basically we've got everything we need.
We've got the players.
We've got the staff.
We've got the support personnel.
We've got the NIL war chest.
We just opened a $225 million buildings, the nicest thing in college football.
football, there's no more excuses. So, I mean, it's, it's now or never, and right now it looks like
never. It's also hard to ignore, man. He got there taking the path of a coward. He had one of the
best jobs in the country. And he was like, ooh, SEC, I don't know about that. And he thought
that he could get all, like, offer USC. I'm bringing Caleb Williams with me. And then they
moved to the big 10. And it wound up, he basically took the job that he left.
Yeah, he did. Absolutely. And that, you know, it's interesting. I mean, I think Riley liked being at Oklahoma because you have one team you got to worry about. And that was Texas. And, you know, maybe somebody else occasionally rises up.
SEC, hell no, I don't want any part of that.
And then you go to USC, well, I got Oregon to worry about.
That's about it.
You know, maybe Washington occasionally, maybe Arizona State or something,
but otherwise I'm good.
Oh, nope, we're leaving that conference too.
And they start having to fight uphill.
And that's when he drops the Notre Dame game,
didn't want to play the Notre Dame game anymore.
That's, here's the thing.
This season was so set up for them.
They had a non-conference schedule of nobody, nobody, nobody.
they had everything like they were not playing Notre Dame.
They opened with a long streak of games at home.
They had plenty of time to ramp up.
And then they still couldn't get it done.
So this is just a full system failure for them.
I had forgotten about them dropping Notre Dame,
which gets back again to people are into this things because it makes them feel good.
They like playing against Notre Dame.
Like this is, this is part of the charm of doing this.
And like when you make those moves like that,
that, man, you better be right.
Absolutely. And he wasn't. That's the fan base is disappointed. They don't have that game.
And, you know, all the excuses, well, it's another Midwest trip and the middle of the season and we already have to do all these other things.
Fans don't care. They want to play games that excite them. They don't want to play San Jose State.
They want to play Notre Dame. So that's a tradeoff that, yes, as you said, it better end up with like a playoff bid.
and it's not going to, almost assuredly,
that backfired badly.
Yeah, we had RJ Young on the other day,
and I was telling him my thing about USC as a job
where these great jobs are interesting
because it takes a different level of guy
to get it done at all of them.
LSU, you can win with a good coach, right?
Yeah.
Or even I would argue,
the first version of Sabin was a great coach,
but it wasn't the version of Sabin that we later got.
Like, it was different levels of it.
USC is a job that a good coach,
can do okay there.
Like John Robinson is a great example of a very good coach there.
Larry Smith, you might win a couple of pack 10s,
but to really do it like they want,
it takes a great coach at that job.
It seems like one that only a good coach needs,
but it's a great coach job.
And I will never forget when Riley left Oklahoma,
let me tell you who wasn't really sad about that.
Oklahoma fans.
They were a little insulted and miffed by the timing of it,
but they saw,
they kind of saw through that.
a lot of what got blamed on Alex Grinch's
defensive coordinator. No,
and Lincoln hasn't had a good defense with any of these guys, right?
They tried to blame it on Grinch when they got to USC too,
but it's like, no, no, no, no, no.
Some guys just can't get that part right.
Yeah, no, that's the common denominator is,
he's had bad defenses everywhere with a bunch of different coordinators.
And so what does that mean?
That means you oversee a program that can't play defense.
So you can't just shovel it off on,
oh, this coordinator was bad, that coordinator was bad.
you systemically are creating a team,
a program that is not good defensively
because you've probably given so much emphasis to the offense.
That's unescapable at this point.
You mentioned the Baylor job is maybe somewhere
that Lincoln Riley would go.
I still struggle with the idea that that's a job that somebody would want.
Like I am of an age where it is impossible for me to believe that.
And the guy that we saw turned that thing around was Art Bryl's
And we saw two things had to happen for that to happen.
One, a brilliant coach.
And number two, that guy.
You had to be willing to do the things that Art Browse was willing to do.
Rule came behind him and I think did an amazing job in getting that going.
But Aranda, who we all know is a like schematic genius, great defensive coach and all of those things.
It wasn't going to work there.
And I look at it like if you're Lincoln Riley, is that really a good job for you to take?
Well, I think you can look at it two different ways.
First of all, you could say, hey, Matt Rule won 11 games there one time.
Dave Iranda won 12 one year, won the Big 12.
And Bryles, now what Bryles did, you don't want to replicate.
You don't want to win that way.
But that was the only time it was sustained.
Now, but you look at you say, hey, there's a lot of financial backing.
Stadium's like 10 years old.
It looks good.
There's players everywhere.
where if TCU can go to the national championship game,
why the hell can't we?
So on the face of it, sure.
But again, is it sustainable?
That is proven historically to be really difficult
unless you cut corners to an alarming degree.
And has Lincoln Riley exposed himself as being a Big 12 coach?
And that's just the kind of conference for him, right?
A conference of offensive geniuses of many different types.
Like I think the underrated thing about the Big 12 is me and my guy,
Alan Kennedy would talk about this.
Every time somebody would say they don't.
play any defense in the Big 12. There's something to that. But also, it was a variance of types of
offenses, all of them on the cutting edge of where football was going. Or every now that you have
somebody like, no, we're just going to run it down people's throats. How about that?
Like, everybody had a way to go about doing it. And maybe that's what Linger Riley needs to be.
Just go have some fun and put up some points where there, no school in that conference has real
big expectations. Like any winning of any of those teams at a high level is just kind of
sort of, you know, gravy, it feels like. Yeah, I mean, the exception is Texas Tech, but that's also a
one-man billionaire operation where, you know, he thinks they should be winning national championships.
But the reality is it's Texas Tech. And in a state, even with a state with a million players,
Texas Tech's pretty far down the list of where they want to go. So unless you're just absolutely
money-wipping them to go there. But yeah, beyond that, look, I mean, BYU wants to be good at football,
but they have other things that they prioritize probably first.
And Kalani Sataki, like he could stay there forever, I think.
Utah wants to be good, but they're not insane.
So that, like you just look at that league and you think it is fluid.
You can get from the bottom or near the bottom to near the top pretty quickly,
as opposed to being the ninth best program in the Big Ten or the 11th best program in the SEC.
Under-discussed thing, those folks at Utah see.
seem to know what they were doing when they forced the old man out, huh?
Yeah, you know what? I mean, you'd love to get the full 911 from behind the scenes.
Did they see that, look, Kyle Whittingham was not necessarily mailing it in,
but just wasn't quite as on top of it as he used to be.
And we've got this guy Morgan Scally, who he'd made the coach in waiting,
and really wants to get in and start doing the job.
And so you do it.
And, yeah, I mean, that's another place, kind of like the Will Stein effect,
the Whittingham leaving and struggling
and Utah being as good as it's arguably ever been
without him tells you something.
And also, let me make sure I get this number right.
Michigan learned hiring a 66 year old coach,
maybe not the thing that you should do.
And I say this is somebody who thinks the Kyle Whittingham
is a Hall of Fame coach.
But it's been, no doubt.
It's been bad.
It's been bad in a job where they were so happy to get a new coach.
I didn't think that anybody could put up something to make people think it was bad.
They're in Penn State, both.
They were happy to get a new coach there.
That's been even worse.
But to your point with Michigan, yeah, like, I think the Sharon Moore thing was so dysfunctional.
They're just like, we need an adult.
We need an adult coach.
And so they went and got not just an adult.
They got a senior citizen.
and they got a grandparent,
and maybe that wasn't the way to go.
Now, it was kind of a rushed coaching search to a degree,
but at the time,
I thought it was the right thing to do,
but I didn't know that he was going to walk in
and have no idea how to field an offense.
I mean, that is just pitiful, painful.
The Indiana-Michigan game was frankly awful,
a 6-6 going into overtime.
That was brutal.
Matt Campbell at Penn State,
since you brought that up,
to me is interesting in that.
We had kind of forgot he was over there, right?
Like he was a guy that we had said for so long,
like somebody needs to go get this guy,
look at what he's done at Iowa State,
and he literally took that as far as it could go.
And now he's gotten to Penn State,
which to me is a weird job, right?
Like it is a,
everything's in place for you to be pretty good.
I don't think anything's in place for them to be as good
as they think that they should be,
but they should be better than they are this year.
For sure, three and four have not,
they haven't yet beaten any power conference opponents.
So when your high watermark is beating Marshall, things are not going terribly well there.
And Campbell, you can look at similarly to Whittingham of just really good in a hard job.
And all of a sudden he gets a bigger job.
And geez, maybe there's something that just doesn't translate.
What is missing here?
And part of the problem, well, he took a lot of Iowa State players with him to Penn State.
And that's a pretty tough commute, if you will, from a pretty good big 12th.
team to a place that wants to compete to win the big 10.
That's a big jump in terms of talent level.
And again, it probably reinforces that what Cignetti did with James Madison guys
and what Chesney is doing with James Madison guys is highly unusual.
That's what I was just about to say.
But you can take the dudes from James Madison and you can make it work at two places that
nobody's, well, Indiana is a different level of nobody's figured out how to make it work.
But the UCLA one, that's a weird job.
Everybody knows that's a weird job.
And these guys just keep bringing these guys from James Madison,
which to me a big part of it is the state of Virginia is weird
because the schools are nowhere near the players.
And so there are all these other schools that popped up.
And, you know, the James Madison's, the Old Dominions,
everybody else has been like, hey, but I think there's a chance that we can get
some of these guys because we're closer to the guys than Virginia Tech is
than they are in Charlottesville.
Like East Carolina used to be the biggest school near the tidewater, right?
Like it's this ultimate no man's land.
And apparently James Madison is the one that figured it out.
Because you can take their guys and take them somewhere else too.
Yeah.
No, it's unbelievable.
And I went up, you know, Cignetti's first year went up to Indiana and interviewed a bunch
of the guys that were James Madison transfers.
And they were from the state of Virginia.
And you go through and ask them, did Virginia tech recruit you?
No.
Did Virginia recruit you?
No.
It's like, why the hell not?
What are you looking at?
These guys could play in the big 10.
And then ultimately several of them.
playing in the NFL?
All right, coming up next, we're going to talk about the madhouse in Austin.
Maybe it looks better after they won on Saturday.
We'll see.

and six and a half passing yards,
Bo, what are you expecting in this matchup?
I mean, I have to say,
while he has been playing well,
there's a lot of potential for a nasty game here.
I would go less a nasty outcome for D. Shaw Watson.
It's just so bizarre because it's been a nasty three quarters in every game.
It has.
But that fourth quarter, you know.
But I tell you this, he looked like D nasty in the previous game,

All right, we are bat with pat 40, sI.com.
I have to give this to Sark.
They're down, Colin Simmons, their best player.
They're down a handful of other guys.
All to talk into the week is about how they're about to have to bench arch.
And they got out early against Old Miss.
They let Old Miss come back.
they did ultimately win the game.
That was as must win a game as that man has ever had in his life,
but it still doesn't feel like things are good there.
Yeah, you know, I mean, like obviously it sure beats the alternative, right?
I mean, if they had blown a three touchdown lead at home to Ole Miss for their third
straight loss, oh my God.
I like the toxicity would be off the charts.
I don't know how you would handle that.
So it was must win in terms of just calming the water long.
long enough to carry on. And old miss is a pretty good team. So you've got a victory over
Ohio State. You got a victory over Tennessee. You got a victory over Ole Miss. Right now,
you're probably the best two-loss team out there. But you've got to keep going. And Mississippi
State this week shouldn't be a problem. But then after that, you've got some tough games.
And the eternal arch angst is just hanging out there. Is he good enough? And especially if you're
going to have a lot of your other studs injured, not just Colin Simmons, as you mentioned,
Hollywood Smothers missed that game, running back.
So, you know, there's still the pot, the pot will continue to simmer for sure for the rest of this season.
They've just got to keep winning, lose another game, and everybody's going to freak out again.
Yeah, and I think he's in that place now where they're getting a little tired of your face.
And another guy that can't handle when things are bad and having to talk to people about it.
Like the thing I've said, if you're going to be Mac Brown minus the sunny disposition, brother, that's not, that's, you're doing it the wrong way.
That's, that's not, that's not the part to dispose of if you're going to wind up taking that approach.
And with Arch, it's been interesting to me to see the film guys in their critiques of the offense.
Because there seem to be the people that it seems obvious that the program talks to and will make all the arguments about the throws that Arch doesn't make.
And then the other guys be like, hey, this dude is not actually letting this guy play quarterback.
They, Arch was one of those recruits that happened every now and then that people want to win to be able to say that they won.
Like it was, he was, he's a trophy date in a lot of ways.
But then in the end, it's your job to be that guy.
Obviously, Archie decided to send that boy to go play for you because they thought you were the guy that can make him a better quarterback.
And now all we know is that he's not going to play for you next year, but we don't think he's going to play in the NFL next year.
Colossal failure.
That's your second straight five-star quarterback that didn't live up to what you were supposed.
supposed to make him out to be. Good point. Yeah. I mean, the Quinn Ewer's thing was kind of,
it was similar where he's supposed to carry the program to a national championship and it just
kind of diminishing returns. And you're watching that now with Arch as well. And yeah,
the questions are, is Arch not seeing it or is Arch not even allowed to look at it in terms
of pre-snap? Is he, is he allowed to walk up, check off, go to something different,
or has that been taken away from him? If so, why? Is he just
not good at it or what is going on? Because the offense, it looks like a series of misreads,
misidentifications, whatever the case may be. And then you throw in accuracy on top of that.
And this whole thing has just become incredibly overwrought. And I get the feeling watching
them now, Bo, that like every incompletion, everybody wants to turn into a referendum, like,
oh, he can't do it. He just missed that white open guy in the flat.
Well, but then he'll come back and he'll lead a three touchdown rally against Ohio State in which he made several really big plays.
But that's part of the problem is the inconsistency.
You love him one minute.
You can't stand him the next.
And that's a hard way to go through life as a quarterback,
especially one who was supposed to be a program savior.
And it does come back on a coach that everybody said,
oh, offensive genius, elite play caller, elite quarterback guy.
and I probably said all those things myself,
but it's not panning out that way right now.
And I have to say this,
we have to give this to them,
and you mentioned it earlier,
their list of wins is good.
In the Archmanning era quarterback in Texas,
I don't think anybody can put win for win
can do much better that Texas has done in that time period.
But man, we remember every single loss,
every single one just jumps off the page.
And then this year,
the thing that Sark has done,
as Texas coach that honestly I'm not sure the last coach to do before him was big
embarrassing wins over Oklahoma just curb stopping them none of those could feel as good to
them as that loss had to feel bad this year like it just kind of took the wheels off of everything
that they were doing this year totally did you're ranked number one you're beating them by 10
you lose in large part because your you know biggest quarterback recruit ever through two
horrific interceptions in the fourth quarter I mean
that was really bad.
And yes, the Oklahoma fans had basically given up on the season.
But you know how that rivalry is, man.
If you're the underdog and you get a chance to shove a stick in the eye of the favorite,
man, they do it.
They rise up.
The underdogs rise up in the Red River game.
You know, it is interesting.
Texas fans seem more miffed about this season than Oklahoma fans do.
And Oklahoma fans are questioning the entire experiment.
That's, yeah, it's fascinating.
Like, first of all, I've never understood the two contract extensions that Brent Venables has gotten.
It totally blows my mind.
They made the playoff last year.
They, you know, they won through a tough November to get there.
But Oklahoma certainly used to aspire to being more than a number eight seed in a playoff theoretically.
And that's the high watermark.
That's the best they've done with Venables.
They've had some bad years.
and this year is a bad year.
So I don't fully get the whole,
the contract situation for Venables,
but they've tied themselves to him.
They've tried to bring in every possible support mechanism.
You know, went and got a splashy GM,
who I think might be the highest paid general manager in college football,
all the support staff,
offensive coordinator who was supposed to be the guy.
You know, John Mateer was a big dollar acquisition at quarterback,
and none of it has worked.
They're a horrible offensive team.
And they just, they've gone into the big, into the SEC and looked like a program that's in over their head for the most part.
How's Heat Watch feeling down there in Tuscaloosa?
They've got a mere two losses so far.
They've got LSU this week.
After that, it looks like it's pretty smooth sailing for Alabama.
It just, I don't know.
Maybe I just cannot let go of my priors that this job devours people.
And then Nick Saban has made us forget that this job devours people.
But the only time I've seen this man happy at that job.
is in that AI video when he was saying it outstanding.
He looked thrilled in that.
Yeah, by far the happiest I've ever seen,
Kail and DeBoer in wearing Alabama gear, that's for sure.
I mean, look, yeah, it is, it's week to week there.
It really is.
That's another place like Texas.
You lose two in a row and everybody wants to bail on you.
And unfortunately for DeBoer,
this is the third straight year that everybody has wanted to bail on him.
And before the Georgia game,
I think everybody thought, myself included, he has got it.
He has figured it out.
He has turned the corner.
They have an explosive offense.
They've got a quarterback who's super talented.
They're ready to step back up and be in Alabama.
And then they score 17 against Georgia, 10 against Tennessee.
Good defenses, but still, you lose both of those.
That was must win against Texas A&M.
But yes, this LSU game, they're off this weekend.
but then LSU November 7th looms extremely large.
You win that one, and then you put the pressure on Lane Kiffin.
But if you win that, you could win out and you're 10 and 2 and you're in the playoff.
And again, we're back to that point where, well, at least we're in the playoff.
But we know Nick Saban would have been 12 and O and going to the SEC championship.
How surprised were you with that L that Georgia took to Auburn?
Shocked. Completely shocked.
Because Kirby doesn't lose that game.
No.
Came out of nowhere.
that Kirby never loses, like at home to unranked teams.
It's been a long, long span.
Now, this did harken back a little bit to like maybe 20, 18, 19, 20.
Kirby's team, Georgia would have one game a year where they would just lose their minds.
They would play so badly you couldn't believe it.
They would do everything wrong.
This looked a little bit like that.
But, man, he'd gotten that out of his system for several years in a row.
So this was a stunning flashback.
Yeah, I was watching that game as it went, and especially like what Auburn is at this point, right?
Like they are now a post-expansion, like a lower tier SEC team.
It feels like they feel somewhat indistinguishable from, say, Mississippi State at this point.
That's a big rivalry.
We get that.
But for them to win that game in Athens and to hang in at the end in the way that they did,
that is the rare time that it just felt like Georgia didn't show up.
And that's the part that Kirby always manages to do is just to get them to show up.
It's almost like a Pete Carroll sort of quality of like,
we're going to be, we're going to give you a game every week.
No matter how well we play, we're going to be out here.
Absolutely.
Because, I mean, their intensity, that's kind of their differentiating factor.
I mean, the talent obviously, I mean, you see them.
They look like just monsters, but they play ridiculously hard, violent football.
And they didn't against Auburn.
Now, I will say one thing, watching.
Auburn watching Kentucky,
certainly watching Florida.
The SEC has raised its floor this year for sure.
I think the ceiling has maybe come down a bit,
but the floor has been raised up.
They made good hires in the offseason.
Golesh, Alex Golish at Auburn,
came from South Florida.
He's done certainly better than Hugh Fries did
and Brian Harsen.
Summerall looks like an improvement over the recent coaches,
certainly over Billy Napier at Florida.
and Stein, obviously, at Kentucky, too. And so, you know, the parody thing, it's trite. It's not
that interesting to talk about. But in the SEC, it's more real, I think, than I've ever seen it.
Where are you on the Pete Golding hire? Because I do feel like what Ole Miss has done this year is
about the same as one would have expected if Lane was the coach. Oh, yeah. Yeah, no, I think I think
Golding's done well. I mean, first of all, he won the one game he had to win. He had to beat Lane.
Had to beat Lane. And so the hangover lost the next week is like, hey, Missing.
Mississippi fans will take that. If we have to make that exchange, fine. But they've got some other good wins. They obviously, they nearly pulled it off in Austin. So I think Golding is doing fine there so far. They've got to finish well. They're one of those, you know, there's like seven SEC teams that are kind of hanging around there with two losses on the fringe of the playoff race, the fringe of maybe getting into the SEC championship game. They're one of them. They've got a chance. I mean, Trinidad Chamber.
elite quarterback from a college standpoint. So I'm fine with what Golding's done so far.
Can you imagine a world where Bill Belichick pulls it together and beats Miami this weekend?
No, no, no. If they couldn't hold a 10.4th quarter lead against Syracuse, the last
place team in the SEC, they ain't beating the first place team. I'm going to throw something out here
for people that the timing of it really just hit me. This was.
was 22 years ago, it will be on Halloween, I believe.
The official end of the U era of Miami football, I want to say they were number three in the
country and they went up to Chapel Hill and inexplicably lost a Saturday night game to
the fighting John Buntings.
And nothing was the same after that ever again.
They are trotting back up there to play that game.
And I can only imagine, only imagine how Bill did.
views himself as a strategist, vis-a-vis Mario Cristobal.
I can only imagine.
Belichick is like, I can find a way to cook this up.
Mario, Mario is an ethos guy.
What's your team do?
We beat people up.
That's what we're going to do.
We're going to be fast and we're going to beat people up.
Belichick, somewhere in there, because I think he's done a decent job with the team that
he has this year.
I think that it's not the embarrassment that it was last year, though you are
correct that Syracuse thing. That
that would jumps out. I saw
Belichick smiling when he rang that bell when
they beat Duke and I was like shit, he's actually
enjoying himself. Like this is,
this could turn into a movie
if they somehow get one over
on Miami. Yeah. You know,
I mean, really honestly, I was shocked they were
sitting there at like four and two. I thought
they might be one in five coming in the season.
But then to blow that Syracuse
games like, oh my gosh.
But yeah, October 30th it was
2004. Got it.
Miami was number four in the nation, lost 31 to John Bunting.
Ooh, that's tough.
Play golf with him once at an ACC Media Day.
Nice guy, but shouldn't be beaten Miami under any circumstance.
No, no, no.
I had been joking because I was teaching that semester.
I told them all year, the homecoming massacre, because it was homecoming.
The homecoming massacre is on the way.
And then I remember we had exams that next week.
And I bought one of the T-shirts from the game.
It said, believe it, to teach increased demand based on,
There was a shock in demand.
Like it was a teaching lesson when that happened.
And look, if Miami wins that, everybody dust off your Catholics versus convicts,
nostalgia because it's going to be Miami and Notre Dame.
It will be nothing like the 1988 game was,
but everybody's going to pretend like the two things have anything to do with each other.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah, I actually covered the Miami Notre Dame 88 game.
The first big event I covered.
I'm like 23 years old, 24, and.
that was epic. It felt epic. The game was epic. Everything about it. This is not the same.
I mean, it'll be fun. It'll be good, but the nostalgia will simply be, yeah, remember that one time.
It won't be like, this is a repeat of that. The one thing that we'll never be able to get again,
because you can only have one of those things once, but it will be impossible to replicate.
Like, Miami was like Mike Tyson at that time. Like, there's been nothing like this. They are
terrifying in some ways. They are invigorating in others. Everything else. You look back on it
to be like, ah, yeah, you know, some of those criticisms were correct, all right? Like you can go back
on all of it. But the idea of Miami and Notre Dame at that time, no program can ever mean what
Miami meant ever again. And to have that game with both of them under, that was a time.
Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. And yes, it was way oversimplified into Catholics versus convicts, white hats
versus black hats, all the racial
coding that may have gone into it.
But it was
as stark a contrast
between programs as
you can about find.
And then when they brawl
before the game, it's like, oh,
man, it is on.
And then the game lived up to it, 31.30.
So it was about as good
as college football gets.
Yeah. You mentioned Bob Chastney a little earlier.
And we didn't talk that much about UCLA.
But they're number seven in the country.
And I don't think anybody at all saw that along the way.
What is it that they are doing that has allowed them to make this jump?
The most amazing thing to me is they have turned UCLA, of all places,
into a tough-ass football team.
Like, they run the ball, they stop the run.
They've got three running backs.
They imported an offensive line that's very good.
And they log in.
They lost their quarterback, Nico I.
Yiam Aliava.
They've got a backup tie deep in back.
was the quarterback at Cal Poly last year and not even a great one.
And so they're just like, all right, we're just going to hunker down.
We're going to run it 50 times.
We're going to play defense.
We're going to shorten games.
And we'll just find a way.
So it has been not just an amazing transformation, but even within the season,
an adjustment of what we're going to do.
Because at least with Nico, you had some splash and some flash at quarterback.
And now they really don't.
but it hasn't it hadn't stopped them they've just said well we'll be better defensively and we'll
figure it out and so it's it's just good a coaching job non-signetti version as i've seen in quite a while
all right last thing before we get out of here i just saw the latest um deon sanders
that's the best way i could put it on this one did you see this where they asked him about
they're going to honor the 2001 big 12 champions and they asked him about that team and he
immediately started talking about cordel stewart and bill mccartney
neither of whom were anywhere near that team when they played.
How much longer does this go?
Yeah, the bigger problem there,
the Colorado radio analyst that does their games is Gary Barnett,
who was the coach of that team?
So kind of you would think that would click in somewhere for him.
Alas, no.
Look, it's bad.
It is really bad.
They have completely fallen apart.
the thing with Dion was that it was like,
hey, they were just going to make it work on force of personality,
talent, and finding away, and they don't have enough talent.
The personality has gotten a little bit tired.
They don't look like they are a buttoned up operation at all.
I don't know how you sustain it.
I mean, he is given them, even by Colorado standards, right?
which like a nine and four season of Colorado should get you like six years on the job.
But since that nine and four, his second year was Shador Sanders and with Travis Hunter,
it's been so bad that I don't know.
I mean, it's really tough.
Nobody wants to fire Coach Prime.
But can you possibly talk him into retirement?
I don't know why he still wants to do it, given some of his health situations.
But it's not, it's certainly gone in direction that it's very hard to see it coming
back and going anywhere else other than a termination of the situation one way or the other.
They're going to have to give him every dime.
If Diaz Sanders' life and career has told us anything, that's the one part.
They're going to have to give him every single dime.
And I think it's going to get ugly after he leaves because I bet you the first order of
business is the number two is going to go back into circulation.
They are going to take, they're going to take your door's number off the wall.
Pronto.
They're going to do that.
Okay, I don't want to make the comparison.
to another team that did that in the NFL
because it's unfair to Joe Sanders,
but I'm just saying they're going to take that shit off the wall
and they're going to hand that back out to somebody else.
But those guys like Dion, I always think a thing they mess up,
and it's important.
I saw this happen with Butch Davis at North Carolina.
It doesn't matter if you don't respect the history that that place has.
Those people respect the history of that place.
And you've always got to wrap your arms around that.
And he just acted like nothing had ever happened before he got there.
And this was like, oh, one thing is like a continuation of that.
Totally. No. I mean that, and look, I've played high school football for Gary Barnett, right? So I know him and have known him since I was a teenager. And I could tell when Prime got there and asked like, what's it like? He goes, well, it's really different. And he felt like they walked in like they had invented football, you know, and that anything that had ever happened, including his time there, had been completely shoved aside and did not matter. The players didn't
matter from the old days, the coaches, any of those wins. It was all Colorado football started
in like 2022 and here we go from there. And again, it was great for two years. Since then,
flat out bad. All right. One more thing now that I think about it, for my North Carolina people,
because they're here, we talked about this. They fired Dave Doran, who I think did about what one
would expect from North Carolina State, but at the same time, I don't blame them for them saying,
what we would like to do a little better than one would expect.
Like that's the nature of growth in this.
But like, who could you see working at that job?
Like, we know what it is at this point.
What do you?
Sure.
Could it be Philip Rivers?
Could it be?
I mean, there's certain people that want to see that happen.
I mean, to me, if again, if you want to win the press conference,
you go ahead and win the press conference with Philip Rivers.
Maybe it works out.
He's been a high school coach.
He's at least coached.
He tried to get the Buffalo Bill's job.
I have no idea whether they took him remotely seriously.
But who didn't win the press conference recently?
Indiana, UCLA.
Guess where they are?
I mean, they've had unbelievable runs.
So winning the press conference is completely overrated,
making the alums feel warm and fuzzy because we got our guy.
He's got his four-star quarterback son with him.
fine, but I think you could certainly make a more well-informed, less risky hire.
And if you've already just had Will Wade completely blow up in your face,
wouldn't you like to make a well-informed less risky hire?
I just can't explain to you how much they love Philip Rivers.
I cannot begin.
And look, I wasn't even a state guy.
And I love Philip Rivers because my first year living there was his senior year.
and buddy i just can't explain to you how bad that football was that was there it would be such a
relief anytime i turned on and saw philip rivers i was like hey man at least i'm going to get a show
and i guess that's how that that's how they feel under those saying circumstances um speaking of
will wade i saw that you and your buddy had a nice little chat at um c basketball media days
um if we ever find out one of us was there one of us was there he wasn't unless you didn't
show up we had to have a zoom call with him now yes there was
legitimate fog that kept them from getting there,
but they could have come later in the day, right?
I would think.
Do we?
Yeah, no, Will's trying to pull some shenanigans down there.
Do we have any idea if those guys are going to play?
It looks like the guys that are on the roster now are going to play.
R.J. Luis, the transfer from St. Johns, who was in the NBA,
that doesn't look like it's going to happen.
He's still trying legally, but I don't know how you get that past the SEC.
And then they had a guy from, I think, was it Brazil or Israel who's not going to play.
But they're going to, look, they're going to have enough bodies.
They're going to have players.
They're going to have like eight or nine guys who can play.
And we'll see what they make of it.
All right.
This is my last one last thing because I know I've said like four last things.
But it dawned to me since we are talking about LSU basketball.
We have not talked about Dale Brown on this show who passed away last week.
And I was just curious your thoughts because Dale Brown,
Dale Brown was one of the rare college coaches of that generation
that my daddy would refer to as a great man.
Like you weren't going to find anybody that got more positive compliments
from people than Dale Brown did after die.
Yeah.
So I'm a young guy covering Kentucky basketball in the SEC.
And Dale Brown was like this geyser of content.
You just couldn't believe the stuff that came out of his mouth,
the things that he did, the talent he got,
the talent he mismanaged as a.
coach. I mean, I still very vividly remember Kentucky with seven scholarship players beating
Shaq, Chris Jackson and Stanley Roberts in Rupp Arena. I remember Dale coming in like the next
year with the freak defense, which was a bad triangle in two, and Kentucky scored like
117 on him. But you get him at the SEC tournament. One year they were going to have to
play four games in four days back when that was kind of a big thing. So Dale just convinces his team
fatigue is overrated.
I'm going to stay up every minute of every day until we're eliminated.
I'm staying up around the clock.
And he announces this at the press conference.
And then, like at two in the morning, he's calling reporters.
Like, Ron Higgins, Ron, this is Dale Brown,
giving you your 2 a.m. barometric pressure check.
And it just became this thing, you know?
That's who he was.
He's just weird and hilarious and captivating.
A true character, there are not co-competent.
like him anymore.
But if you gave Dale five dudes from Scotlandville,
a couple from Baker and one from Zachary,
you could go to the final four.
True.
Yes.
If you give him Shaq, you can't.
No.
But if you give him those guys,
he did go to the final four twice.
Yep.
And a point I've seen people make.
As much as we could argue
that Dale was an underachiever,
they've not been as good since he left.
They have not been as good.
It's been 20 years since they made a final four
with a worse coach than Dale Brown ever could.
by the way.
They went to a final four with John Brady.
LSU basketball.
LSU has the four best players in the history of the
Southeastern Conference, I think that you could argue.
Shack, Maravich, Bob Pettit, and Chris Jackson.
And nothing to show for it.
It is amazing.
I mean, truly, like, what, multiple NBA Hall of Famers there.
And not just Hall of Fame, but like all-time top 50 kind of guys.
Yeah, that's three guys on the 75 team.
Yeah, yeah.
And then Chris Jackson, who may be the best college freshman that ever lived.
Absolutely.
Chris Jackson was 27 points a game right away.
It was unbelievable.
And like 5-11, 140 pounds.
Yeah.
My brother tells the story about guarding Chris Jackson in a pickup game because he went to Southern when those guys were at LSU.
So he had to guard Chris Jackson at a pickup game at the Armory in Baton.
And he said he got caught on a switch.
And now he's guarding Chris Jackson.
And he said, well, what he's not going to do is go buy me.
I'm just going to keep going back and he's not going to go by me.
And he said, there wasn't no, he's not going to go by me.
There was no retreat going back fast enough for anything else.
There was nothing that you could do in the face of that guy.
But Dale squared off with the NCAA before people had the heart to square off with the NCAA too.
Like, you may not know this.
Dale Brown was honored in 2013 by the 100 black men of Baton Rouge for lifetime contributions to the community.
How about that?
Dale was.
Dale was for the cause.
Whatever the cause was.
Yes.
Basically.
Dale was four.
And let me tell you, Daddy Dale is an all-time great nickname.
Like, you've done something right if people are willing to call you Daddy Dale in public.
But hey, that is Pat 40.
Check about SI.com covering college football and college basketball.
My bad.
