Starting point is 00:02:27 First time guests. You can check out the RJ Young show. Catch them online. Check out is writing at foxsports.com. author of two books, Let It Bang and Requiem for a massacre. I have blurred books for this, man. So I had to apologize to him.
Starting point is 00:02:41 You look up sometime and realize you haven't had a guess you meant to have for a long time. So RJ, what's going on, man? Hey, man, I'd be talking back to the show. You just don't hear it. That's all. That's all. No, man, I am glad to have you.
Starting point is 00:02:54 Also, RJ, big old you guy. So I figured that, like, way to go for you guys, man. Like, that was, that was, one, I would actually kind of talk about this a little bit, and we got a lot to get to Ohio State and Indiana play this week. There's also another, a very interesting SEC game that I think is kind of being undersold across things.
Starting point is 00:03:13 But one thing you and I talked about years ago when OU decided to go to the SEC was, are you guys really going to enjoy this that much? Like, there are a handful of schools that I feel like, I understand the moves that had to be made, but like Arkansas would have enjoyed the last 30 years a lot more if they were in the Big 12, for example. There's a handful of those.
Starting point is 00:03:34 But with OU, there is the possibility always that they could be a top-line competitor in the SEC, but the floor has changed so much from what it has been historically for that program. So, like, are you guys enjoying the SEC? Hell not. No, no. No, hell not. Like, you know, you were way ahead on this, right? It was, hey, look, everybody in there is going to have that eight and five, that eight and four, that seven and five.
Starting point is 00:04:01 Yeah. Not every, like Nick Sabin. as an outlier, right? George has always been good. They've never been this. They've never been great. The thing about being an Oklahoma fan, though, twofold.
Starting point is 00:04:13 One, I like winning 11, 12 games a year. I like knowing that my room is going to stay my room at this hotel called the college football playoff. And eventually, we'll move up, right? That was the thought. In the SEC, dog, I was telling somebody this the other day. realized that Vanderbilt got good in a hurry. Texas A&M can't seem to figure it out all while Kentucky is kicking that ass.
Starting point is 00:04:39 And we got to worry about every now and again a Mississippi state or even, Lord help us if Auburn get good again, everybody in that league can put these hands on you. And at Oklahoma, that ain't, that ain't been to get down, especially for my lifetime. Well,
Starting point is 00:04:55 I say my lifetime. Like, I gratefully remember very little of the 90s, because I come online as a college football plan as like a teenager. So like around 1998, right, by the time Bob get there. The part that I think that we really need to discuss, though, is I was telling folks, like this is a rollercoaster of Brent Venables,
Starting point is 00:05:13 I'm going, nah, it's just the SEC, right? You'll go win 10 games, and then you'll go 7 and 6 with a loss to Navy or 67 with a loss to Navy. And that's just what life is. I'm not enjoying that. I don't like that. It is. But you got that one over time.
Starting point is 00:05:29 Texas, right? Like the thing that's so interesting with Texas in the SEC, with Texas is a little different than Oklahoma in the sense that Texas has always been a bit more highfalutin about itself. Texas reminds me of North Carolina in the sense that the day will come where North Carolina is trying to get into the SEC for survival, but it has always held its nose up in the air about the idea of getting into the SEC. Texas had also felt that way while also being in these other conferences where they had these decided structural advantages where they wanted to stay. I felt like Texas and Oklahoma both had to go to the SEC
Starting point is 00:06:04 because it was going to become otherwise impossible to get players because the Big 12 as a sell job had just gotten to be a little bit too difficult. Now they're there. The Oklahoma question is interesting because we treat Oklahoma like, ooh, I wonder how they're going to do. Where with Texas, I felt like, okay, this conference is going to shame them into finally operating a little closer to capacity because historically, they wanted to be good.
Starting point is 00:06:27 They kind of preferred being racist for a long time, and then they got over that. But it was still where OU, you and I have both read Switzer's Autobiography Bootlegger Boy, where there's a chapter by the then president who made it very clear. OU football is good because the state decided people needed something to make them feel good about themselves.
Starting point is 00:06:44 Being good at football is not optional at OU, the way it is optional at Texas. But now, Texas, I feel like you're in the SEC and you're looking around and you're realizing, yeah, nobody here has any reason to be better than us. but shit just keeps happening. And that kind of needs to stop. Like I do wonder at what point they get to the place
Starting point is 00:07:02 because it's not, historically it's not been an impatient job. People typically get the time to make it work. Sark better figure this out though. Because now I think people are really looking at it like, hey, hey, hey, hey, come on, man, what is this? But who the hell are you going to go get? Like that was my other thought, right? Like, I hear you because on the one hand,
Starting point is 00:07:20 the recruiting advantage had always been toward Texas and we know this. Texas is about talent evaluation. It ain't about recruiting. Right. That's where it's tricky, by the way, that they have to get everyone right. Remember that run where they had to answer
Starting point is 00:07:33 for everybody else's quarterbacks because they didn't get them? Nobody ever has to do that. Matt Brown catching hell for RG3, Johnny Mansell. Like, anybody that ever came out of Texas at all during that period he catching hands for, especially when we were real big on,
Starting point is 00:07:50 I don't remember you, no, you remember this, but I remember this clearly. Hey, what is it what you were, recruiting quarterbacks to play wide receiver. Like, what is it with you recruiting quarterback to play safety? Yes. You can't do that down there. But the only thing was no power conference school offered Robert, like, nobody in the
Starting point is 00:08:09 Big 12 offered Robert Griffin. They only offered after Bryles got the job at Baylor, but he was going to go to Houston. A&M did not have to answer for this. Nobody did. They went from having Sims to having events to having coal. It basically went from 16 years as a. school of having great quarterback play to having to answer for everyone they did not get in a
Starting point is 00:08:31 three years cycle. But I can understand it from one standpoint. A, you hit on Vince and you hit on Vince right when you should have like you forget. They made an offense that he could finally run and then he was unstoppable so much so that we put that offense in at high school. Like you would run that sort of, we called a Texas spread because it was playing point guard with him. And then you got Andrew Luck at Stanford and people are going, wait, how do that boy get us outside of Texas? But more to the point that I would make today around Texas is that your roster is better than almost everybody.
Starting point is 00:09:08 There are three teams, four teams with a roster better than Texas, right? And we know them all. They're all good. Georgia, LSU, Ohio State. That's where I'm going to end that. And that is where we are going to judge you. That's how we're going to judge you, which is why that loss to Oklahoma ain't about me feeling good about beating Texas
Starting point is 00:09:29 because, oh, you ain't beat Texas. That's one offensive TV in there where the quarterback happened to not put the ball on the floor or throw the ball to other people. That was a game that was much more sweet to me because I watched Texas lose it again and again and again. I had so much fun watch,
Starting point is 00:09:47 wait, did Arch Manning just throw it in them 500? And then it's like, oh, cool. can of corn, Aski, let me take this back to the house. That sort of stuff. It's fluky. Like, that's the other part.
Starting point is 00:09:58 Like, I know Texas is a good football team. Is it the number one team? No, Georgia's still on the Death Star Tour. But if you Steve Sarkisian, don't come out here talking to me about what Arch Manning
Starting point is 00:10:08 might be considered if his name was not Manning. But I hate that kind of impractical. Bullshit that we be on because, hey, man, he is talented. He just ain't playing to that potential. And you to play caller, you to quarterback's coach, figure that shit out, he refuses to do that. Or at the very least, he's coddling to do it.
Starting point is 00:10:31 I don't think needs to be coddled. Like, I honestly believe that Arch will handle whatever coaching you want to give him. But we entered into a space where Texas is becoming an apologist. And I hate that. I need him to be the same, you know, rich old white men that they've been for a long time because I can trust that dude. Yeah, I tell you this, though. I still don't think you really want to impress him. with him if it comes to playoff time because head coach of the defense will bus champ boys fly in
Starting point is 00:10:59 and collins i think we agree that's the best defensive player in the country right uh no we don't agree there he's good he real good who you got over him chris cove georgia yeah i think that's fair that dude he don't play linebacker like imagine if caleb downs was 20 pounds heavier and we asked him to play in the middle of the defense you can't do nothing with him. That's the problem. Like with Colin Simmons, I could see a dude that I could double team if I could double team him, right?
Starting point is 00:11:30 But that's not like Aaron Donald in the middle. That's not to use a much more recent end. That's not Chase Young on the outside. However, Rahim Biles, that's another dude. Like that, he transferred him from Pitt. He's from Ohio, right? And the thing was, he said, look, I don't care nothing about Ohio State. Went to work on, by the way, because they didn't recruit me.
Starting point is 00:11:52 And everybody was like, Texas ain't recruits you neither. Didn't matter. Like, they got dudes. Like, I think the thing about Colin this year, though, is that they, like, your man's must champs has designed a defense that is allowed for that dude to be one-on-one against your best and he will beat him. And that is becoming rare at the edge position. Like, there's three or four dudes that can do that.
Starting point is 00:12:14 Outside of him, though, I mean, I can go to four other players. I might tell you could be six, six, 7, 8, 9, 10, and as far as the best defensive players in that league. And I think that's one of the things that makes them great. Because that defense can win a national championship is whether or not that offense will get online. Yeah. And I think I talked about this when we did the show on Sunday about Arch is that
Starting point is 00:12:37 I mean, Peyton Manning got people misunderstanding what Mannings are. You know what I mean? Like, he's the outlier. Can I ask you a question? Yes. All right. So we know that Arch's quarterback. We know Payton's a quarterback.
Starting point is 00:12:51 No, Eli is a quarterback. We know Archie's a quarterback. What is about Cooper that said wide receiver? Well, Cooper, the only one of them that was fast. I've always said, I can't imagine how embarrassed Archie was at having these slow-ass boys. The idea that he also would create a quarterback, right? Like Marshall Manning is at Baylor, the Baylor School in Tennessee,
Starting point is 00:13:17 which I think it's hot, like something like 71 grand a semester or something. and he's going to be, yeah, he going to be that dude. I get that part, right? I've never quite understood how Archmanning, who's got all his dad's speed, size, ability, comes up throwing the football, even at a place like Insie Adore Newman, which is a 2A high flute in high school in New Orleans.
Starting point is 00:13:40 Ain't nobody said why I'd receive it at that boy. And I'm not saying they do, but I just always found that fascinating, because Cooper looks like the one of those dudes that actually low-key might be the coolest of the three, and all three and them brothers is cool. Mm-hmm. Now, they are, he has been done in by the name.
Starting point is 00:13:59 And I feel like Archie has done his best to try to tamp all that stuff down. Like, it doesn't feel to me like they've leaned into all that hype or everything. But the way that people talked about them last year, I'm like, oh, it's people on TV that obviously don't even mean what they're saying, right? It's just, we're just going to sell this. He's the best, he's the best quarterback or the biggest quarterback since Tim Tebow. First of all, they've been better than Tim Tebow, like, immediately. after Tim Tebow. But the hype machine,
Starting point is 00:14:24 I did not feel at all like Texas or Arch were responsible for it. It was just a decision that was made before the season by a lot of people that this is how we're going to sell the thing. And yeah, a lot of that's ESPN because ESPN sells. Fox does a lot of college football too, but they don't sell it seven days a week.
Starting point is 00:14:42 ESPN sells this seven days a week. And they tried to sell it off Arch. And then after a week, they was like, shit, important mission, man. This isn't what we thought we were selling. at all. I think a couple things happen here. One is the hype around Arch Manning is deserved from a potential standpoint. Like if you just sit there and watch him play seven on seven or throw routes on air, you can talk yourself into it. But like, I can talk myself into a lot. Like another dude that I
Starting point is 00:15:10 think we have overhyped that might be a good comparison is Lenore Sellers at South Carolina. All right. That is another dude that people think of like Anthony Richardson at Florida. It's he's got everything you want from a professional standpoint of a position of quarterback, physically talented. And I go, but his decision making ain't there. And I don't trust him. And every once in a while, both of those guys will have games. I say all three of those guys will have games where they just take it over. And you'd be like, okay, if they can get more of that than what we've seen, it'll be all right.
Starting point is 00:15:41 That's never click with arch. But here's the thing that is going to make modern football, modern college football so much more fun. every year that these quarterbacks play as starters, they get better. They don't regress, not on the whole. Like, Darien Mintz is out here throwing darts, 84% completion rate, which is absurd. 21. Incompletions on 150 passes, it's absurd. But he's gotten better each year because now we're getting into, actually, no, I can play five for five,
Starting point is 00:16:10 and they're going to pay me to play five for five. I think we're just expecting that dude in Arch Manning to mature. at a much quicker rate than he has. But I think that dude could stick around for another couple of years, and I think Sark would be happy to have him. And then he could finally have something click, and then we end this money.
Starting point is 00:16:32 And by the way, that does happen. Like Carson Palmer with the infamous four offensive coordinators in four years while he was at USC, but it really wasn't a thing until the senior year, right? And then all of a sudden he became a quarterback built from granted, like all the things that came around. But it was three years of what's the big deal with this guy?
Starting point is 00:16:47 and then they finally figured it out toward the end, right? Like Vince Young, in halfway through red shirt sophomore year, it was time to change positions. Then a couple things change and they break. And then it goes from there. You mentioned Mintsa. I want to bring this up because Miami's been looking like Miami. It's interesting, though, because we all understand.
Starting point is 00:17:06 Cristobal in a lot of ways is the coach that I feel like shouldn't be a lot. There shouldn't be too many more of these anymore. And this is what I mean. Great recruiter. you're going to have a clear style of football. Scheme and strategy, though. Now, he's, he's, he's, he's not that different than less miles, right? He's an offensive line coach with the team that's going to have the,
Starting point is 00:17:33 which is a good thing I mean in this way. The mentality is offensive line coach. But if it comes down to who's making decisions to win this, you don't have your money on crystal ball. But they, they look like they've built, which is the hardest thing to do with Dan. Lannin keeps trying to do it at Oregon but can't quite, which is building an SEC team, not in the SEC.
Starting point is 00:17:53 Like playing Sabin ball, not in that conference. But they not, I mean, they're playing Sabin ball from like 2015 and 2017. Kind of like Kirby. No, not like Kirby. Not like Kirby. Let's come back around to that. I want to, it's after, it's more like after Nick figured out, oh, y'all want to do this dual threat stuff,
Starting point is 00:18:12 y'all want to have these quarterbacks that can move around, y'all want to light up the scoreboard, cool. All right, let's do it. Let's do it. He was mad. He was so, is this what you want football to be cool? I could do that too. You know, hey, Lane, throw this ball down Mari Cooper a million times. Yes. You know what I'm saying?
Starting point is 00:18:29 Henry Ruggs, Jerry Judy, Jalen Waddle, Devonte Smith. That's how they feel right now. That's Mario Cristobal's Miami. But the point that I raised about him is opposed to like the Les Miles thing. You are right. Save one thing. Mario Cristobal knows, knows. He is.
Starting point is 00:18:46 the handsomest man in every room. He walks around with a kind of swagger that I think Les Miles should end me. Because that that dude walks in everywhere thinking that it's going to become a place that is safe and fun for him. Now, on the other hand, talking about the on the field stuff, what I call the head coach and stuff, can he go get you a bucket
Starting point is 00:19:08 as a head coach? I never forget. Kirby Smart, we talk about him as a strategist, but he has become a head coach, go get you a bucket. Ohio State that 2023 college football playoff, it looked like they were going to kick a field goal and that was going to be that, right? And right before that, Kirby out here
Starting point is 00:19:26 getting this time out, right? Getting it right when you need it. I'm going, if you don't stop the clock there, everything is in rhythm for Ohio State in this kicker to go do what they got to do. Mario stopped making those kinds of mistakes last year and look at what happened. They make the national championship game.
Starting point is 00:19:42 Maybe coaches develop too, maybe? but as much as I want to give him credit for this, man, Shannon Dawson, offensive coordinator out there, has been on another level. Think about it this way. He made Cam Ward and Carson Beck into dudes, and those are two very different kinds of quarterbacks running the same system.
Starting point is 00:20:01 And now he got a dude that is throwing the ball, and more importantly, Bo, you've been around a team where watched a team like Miami where they just don't put the ball on the floor? Yeah. Like, that's remarkable. Everybody catching the ball. Everybody is catching the ball.
Starting point is 00:20:14 How do you contend with that? If you know that you got the surest wide receiver hands and you got this dude Mark Fletcher that's a load, you feel like you can win every game. Now, they're going to play Florida State this week. That ain't nobody. I don't think Mike Norville going to get fired off that game, but he could get fired. Notre Dame is the only team that might be able to beat them, right? Can Marcus Freeman out coach Mario Cristobal?
Starting point is 00:20:37 The answer should be yes, but at this point, Mario Cristobal might just be doing enough. He might be doing enough. Hey, you just mentioned something about Florida State. Oh, and Norville. Are you surprised that nobody's gotten fired yet? Yes. Because in the last couple of years, by now, dudes started getting fired. Yes.
Starting point is 00:20:54 Nobody's been fired. Florida State, I mean, the answer seems to be obvious. They ain't got the money. And they just fired the athletic director. Yeah. Oh, that's right. So you got to get the new athletic director and let him do it. There was a time when I was talking to, I was talking to Ron, my best friend, right?
Starting point is 00:21:12 And it was like, what is it with Mike Norville? And at the time, I was going, hey, he lose the wrong football game to the wrong team. Like, he was going to get to play against his alma mater, which is central Arkansas. And I was like, he might not be around for that. He survived that. But Norvel having to survive at Florida State has been way less fun than I thought it would be. I thought perhaps, because you remember, that dude is not just from Central Arkansas. He was also a grad assistant at TU.
Starting point is 00:21:38 I knew him casually, right, at TU, but this is a Mousin guy. and I always thought that that offense my track and what he was doing in Memphis had been working, but now I've come to think of Memphis, kind of like James Madison, is just one of these programs where head coaches just tend to win, right? For whatever reason.
Starting point is 00:21:54 Now you get to a place like Florida State where winning in the Bobby Bowden era becomes kind of what you expect. And then Jimbo kind of pushed it as far as I think you can push it without pissing people off and then piss people off. Now we're at a place where I'm not sure what Florida State is. And that's, I mean, I really want to get that back to you because we can have a different discussion about
Starting point is 00:22:16 2013 Florida State, right? I think that's one of the worst teams to win an national championship, but that's me. Really? Yeah. No, I'm not. Despite all the talent and despite the results. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:22:31 That's a hot take. Look, I'm, is it just because of Jimbo? Some of it. Some of it. Some of it. It's also the Jamest that I. I saw, I'm going, man, look, if I give this to other dudes, is he going to be that good? No, he's going to be 30 for 30 like he was at Tampa.
Starting point is 00:22:51 You know, like, that was the other, I had a hard time with them because I thought the schedule wasn't always there. I thought they, trying to remember that game that sticks out in my brain, that they flubbed up and it was found money. It'll come to me because I'm going from that, going from 2012 with Notre Dame and Alabama to that team. I was going, this Alabama team from 2012 would beat the hell out of this team.
Starting point is 00:23:15 And then we go to the college football playoff, right? And then I have to go in my head, does this Ohio state team get beat by that Florida state team? No, it's also the last year of the BCS. But again, back to the Florida State point today, I'm not sure who they are. Who are they to you? The problem they've got is,
Starting point is 00:23:35 and Miami had to adjust to this also, the competitive advantage that they had through the 80s and 90s truly was they got on this thing that their neighbors weren't really trying to get on, which is what if we get all the best players that we possibly can? How about we do that? Now, that might mean 11 black dudes on defense. It just might, but we're going to do it anyway, right? Like that was the advance. Like what what what advanced did Bobby Bowden make recruiting black dudes? What was the strategy on defense? We're going to rush four and drop seven and be faster than everybody.
Starting point is 00:24:15 Dominique always talks about this on offense, even in the time when he was in school, he was like all they ran was where goes and posts. That was all it was. Like there was nothing at all advanced in what they did other than go and get the best players. So now that you get to this place, the ACC caught Florida State. And it wasn't that Florida State really lagged back in total. total, the rest of the world started recruiting Florida a little bit more.
Starting point is 00:24:44 The ACC caught up with them and they became just an ACC school. Post-Gimbo, that's largely what they've been. And they're at a good location. At least it used to be before money because the thing that people misunderstand geographically is how far north in Georgia, Athens is, and how far that is from South Georgia to where Florida State is the home team for a lot of those kids in South Georgia, for example. Well, now if it comes down to money, they ain't got it. So what actual factual advantage does Florida State have that it can leverage right now?
Starting point is 00:25:20 I don't see it. To your point, it used to be like my daddy's from Campbellton, Florida, which is in the panhandle. It didn't have a dot on the state map, on the state map until like 2004, right? But we always called it lower Alabama because it's doth in Alabama's not that far away, right? and you could get to Georgia. And Jacksonville might as well be lower Georgia. So when you could recruit them. Yes.
Starting point is 00:25:47 Yes, it is. So you can recruit that. And one of the things I would point to people was, when did you know that Florida State was going to take a dive? When that big dude from U.S. Florida didn't give Florida State a look. Yeah. Talk about Derek Henry. He ended up at Alabama and bypassing both Florida and Florida
Starting point is 00:26:08 State altogether told me everything I needed to know. Because if you looked at what that man was doing in high school, again, he ain't playing against anybody that, I mean, they had a, they had a rule for him. They take him out after they score so many touchdowns. Absurd. Right. But he didn't look at Florida State. He didn't look at Florida.
Starting point is 00:26:28 He always was looking at Georgia and Alabama. That was it. And I remember thinking to myself, so where did we get all these players? we being a guy from Florida Tidewater, right? The idea, another way of putting this, realized that
Starting point is 00:26:46 Bobby Bowden was in a position to stash Randy Moss. Yes. And it didn't hurt him. And it didn't hurt him. And Peter Warwick. Lord, have mercy. There's only one program
Starting point is 00:27:02 that could do that today. Only one. It's Georgia, right? Like, everybody else, you got to play them. Yeah. You got to play them. It's like, nah, I told the president that I would let, I would tell Randy he got to sit for a year. Why?
Starting point is 00:27:17 Why here? This is Florida State. You guys could, one game and all the controversy would disappear. One game. And that dude, man. Like, I so wanted to see him play at Florida State because it was, it was the opportunity to see a really great player on, at what was one of the best. programs in all the college football. I'm also looking around at the rest of this and asking, like, because we have this discussion quite a bit, I think, out loud, what has name image and likeness
Starting point is 00:27:51 done to the sport insofar as the talent advantage? Because, again, a lot of this is based on area. Can you recruit the area? Do you have a pipeline, right? Did you run the oil pipeline all the way out to California to get it come back to Oklahoma? Yeah, we did. Ohio. Did you run it all the way down to out for it to get it come back. Yeah, we did. That ain't true no more. And the loyalty to the brand is only true for a few. And I think that's gone out the window because one of the things that always kind of got to me was Texas, going back then. Jalen Milrow did my show in high school. Coming out of Katie Tompkins was good, real good. And he had committed to Texas at the time. And I said, hey, man, you know what I know about Texas. Why you want to go to Texas?
Starting point is 00:28:35 Or just all I ever want to do. That's the school. That's where I mean, that's what means the most to me. And then Mike Yersich got in there and did the dumbest thing ever and pulled the offer. And Nick Saban said, hey, Jalen, you want to come Tuscaloosa? Back to that point that I think you put me on. Nick was really the first dude that said, I don't care what you look like. I want to win at LSU, right? And ever since then, looking at LSU, anybody can win there,
Starting point is 00:29:06 which I think is the reason why I would never have Mariah Kelly. for another job. Anybody can win at LSU, right? Because that was the thing. Just recruit the state. That doesn't exist anymore. And I'm curious, especially as you have been doing a little bit more reporting around this, do players actually give a damn? I don't think so. I think the money now, money in the debt chart are going to answer the question, but the money is going to speak to the money in the debt chart like this right here, right? Like, then I go off you. so much to not play. Like, to me, markets are going to work out most of this by and large.
Starting point is 00:29:46 The trick is going to be, can you evaluate the guys that not everybody else is on and get them cheap for like a year? Because ain't going to be, because ain't nothing going to last for long, man. I can't imagine trying to work in these programs. Just like pure, unadulter chaos every year. Everything changes. It's, I get why they feel like it needs saving. It don't need saving, but it does need some gar rails.
Starting point is 00:30:08 Like I think that we would all like by a large degree just not necessarily the ones that they try to put in. All right fast. Starting point is 00:41:03 We have Ohio State and Indiana in a Titanic football clash. Ohio State maybe has the chance to break up Indiana's 22-game winning streak. Again, these things that we're saying about football. I have not watched this Indiana team play as much. Everything I've seen from Ohio State has just involved Jeremiah Smith doing incredible things. I've watched a lot of both of these teams because they're fascinated, right? Like I had Indiana as my preseason number one, and I had Ohio State as my preseason number two.
Starting point is 00:41:37 With the thing being this October 17th being circled way in advance, especially after the Big Ten championship, and especially after Indiana ran right through Alabama and Oregon on the way to beat Miami for a national title. The Hoosiers in football. Okay. All right. The thing about this Indiana team that is interesting, though,
Starting point is 00:41:58 is that defensive front is still nasty. They got two dudes on that defense that ought to be playing the NFL now but got the 50 year back. So they came back, right? And Stephen Daly and Kellynne Wyatt. And Nick Marsh is one of my favorite football players to watch because he is the first wide receiver I've ever seen who doesn't take any time off, right? He puts his hands on everybody all the time,
Starting point is 00:42:20 loves to block a cornerback into the dirt as if it's his job. And then in winning time, he can go make that play for you. They got two dudes at Indiana and Charlie Bell. and Nick Marsh that can go make plays. Josh Hoover went from turnover machine at Texas Christian to 17 to 0 as a TD to I&T ratio at Indiana. Oh, boy, let me tell you something. Joel going to love you saying that
Starting point is 00:42:43 because doesn't, nothing Joel love more than a strike against Sonny Dykes. And there it is right there. And again, the offensive line is doing all that work, right? Like that's, I mean, that would be the knock on Sonny's offenses. Hey, you asking that dude to stand back there for three seconds is not one to go. and Kirk is going, why are you still holding on football? Right.
Starting point is 00:43:03 Let it go. And they got, you know, they got tailbacks that can make it work. On the Ohio State side, right fast, it's not just Jeremiah Smith. It is Julian saying they got a quarterback. Like I've said, Ohio State gets to play the team, get to play the game with another queen on the chessboard. And the queen is Jeremiah Smith. He's open if it's one-on-one.
Starting point is 00:43:23 He's sort of open and if it's two-on-one. Somebody else is open if it's three-on-one. And Julian has been making that right decision so far. They just can't run the football as well as they like. And their offensive line, which returns all five starts from last year, is still not great. So you can get to them. And Texas could get to them.
Starting point is 00:43:43 And that was part of it. But you also saw in that game, Ohio State had a 20-point lead, dog. They just blew it. I'm excited about this. Clearly, I'm excited about this. Where are you on Ryan Day? I don't think I've seen a man adapt to what the expectation is
Starting point is 00:44:00 from his base better than Ryan. I think he's a good football coach. I do. I also think that he knows every year is a year he can get fired for losing the wrong game. And he's lost that wrong game
Starting point is 00:44:19 a little more often than he should. In 2024, that is, yeah, they won the national championship, but they had to. and I don't think that's true anywhere else in the country anywhere else in the country we're not going to say because you lost to Michigan
Starting point is 00:44:37 you got to get fired especially after the rest of it or Kyle McCourt who got the hell up out of there as a quarterback because he lost that game and nobody wanted to see him anymore they won't let a game so the thing that's interesting about that to me is if the John Cooper years
Starting point is 00:44:53 are any indication and people tell me things are different than they were then but I hold on on that. I just bring that up to say, they waited until Cooper went like six and six before they fired them. You'll just wish you had gotten fired, right? It's kind of like Alabama. Alabama didn't always fire those. Ray Perkins got out of there. Bill Curry kind of sort of got fired, but in the end, you can say that he got out of there. Franchone got out of there. With those dudes, Ohio State is one of those where they're not necessarily going to fire you. You're just not really going to enjoy it. I don't know
Starting point is 00:45:28 what Ohio State would have to do for Ryan Day to get any credit for it. But I'll tell you this, I was watching some of one of those games on Sunday with the commanders of Washington against the Giants of New York, and you see Arvill Reese and Sunny Stiles playing like beast, and it makes you come back to fucking Ryan Day and be like, you guys lost two games last year, huh? How? You lost Indiana?
Starting point is 00:45:51 Yeah, those guys on your team? Oh, man. So to your point about dudes just kind of sticking around but not liking it, clear this up for me. Gene Stalens was given his walking papers or told A, if you come back, you're not going to like it. Yeah, it's kind of the differences.
Starting point is 00:46:08 Okay, okay. All right. He won a national championship there. They were really good. Incredible record, right? And for some of these programs, your record doesn't mean anything at all. And that's what I love most about college football.
Starting point is 00:46:24 You can go 12 and oh, we might go you to fifth best team in the country, maybe. eighth, ninth. You know, we don't really care about that part. How good do we think you were supposed to be? They read, they read Jay Stallings out of there in a year where they won the division and they lost the SEC championship game to Florida that won the national championship.
Starting point is 00:46:45 Finish number 11 in the country. I love knowing that because it also underscores just how quick the fuse is. And when people keep telling me that, you know, I'm of the opinion college football is too big to fail. They just won't let it. The money's getting huge. I'm not going to see out of control because every now and again, somebody comes up with enough money to go get done what you want to get done.
Starting point is 00:47:10 Or my favorite part of this about you not going to like it or we going to get you up out of there, Mike Gundy had two losing seasons at Oklahoma State 20 years, two, right? That last one was real bad and it hurt and it didn't look good. They came up. It's like, did you come out? How'd you come up with the buyout? Because we think in a poor. No, we came out of that with our general operating budget.
Starting point is 00:47:34 I'm sorry, you came out to check it account for this? No, we got it. We got it. And then, hey, we want to go get North Texas, tell it in and put everybody in the U-Haul, driving him up three hours north. We're going to make it happen. It's like, okay, cool. What are you going to pay the head coach?
Starting point is 00:47:50 You know, between three and five. All right, that's cool. What are you going to play the quarterback? You know, between three and five. What? Y'all got it like that? And that's where we look at at Ohio State, they were the first people to say,
Starting point is 00:48:05 oh, money's the thing now? Cool, we got it. $20 million? Here. To be fair, it's always been the thing there. And they've always been. Do you, I don't know if you remember this. And you probably do.
Starting point is 00:48:19 Like, this is where the age difference comes in, but I think you'll remember it. There's the infamous Maurice Claret, ESPN, the magazine cover story where he talks about how if he could get a hundred million dollar contract, he would go to the NFL. It is crazy to think what a giant controversy it was that a man said, yes, if I could get a hundred million dollars, I would go do the thing to get it, right? It is wild the controversy we manufactured of that. But his sophomore year where he doesn't get on the field, I forget what exactly the issue was, but at some point
Starting point is 00:48:51 he got mad and he called Gene Wilgerowski, I believe it was Gene Wojahowski, and he called Gene Wojahowski, and he laid out exactly how the money worked at Ohio State. He laid out like, you come in, boom, this is where you go to get the cash. This is where you go to get the car. This is where you go to do all these things. And we just said, poppycock, none of that could possibly be true. It was so obviously true. It was in a reputable publication.
Starting point is 00:49:18 Nobody even really tried to say it wasn't true. We said it was poppycock, but nobody really said it wasn't true because nobody sued or anything like that. just laid that shit out there completely. We're just like, yeah. Anyway, let's talk about something else. Hold on, hold on. Two years later, or one year later,
Starting point is 00:49:37 is when Troy Smith gets caught because Tressel sent him to the Farmore dude to go get a couple thousand dollars. I think no one has caught more hell for saying the quiet part out loud than Murray's Claret. Yeah. Let me go to the NFL, please.
Starting point is 00:49:55 No, nobody would think to say that today Because dudes is trying to get that money Right. If you can see in the gap. Other thing about that is, man, I still have so much I want to know about and from Jim Tressel Because the man that I see Fascinates me.
Starting point is 00:50:11 The man that I see is not necessarily the man that is coaching them. Right? Because the way of which they talk about the man that is coaching them And the man that I see, they don't gel for me. And yet, that is. is, that is, I'm not even sure what that dude's political opinions actually are. I know he's between a governor, but I don't know him. I don't know. I am so fascinated by him because nothing adds up because those guys love him. And when I say those guys, I mean,
Starting point is 00:50:44 our guys, they love him. He learned how to navigate Youngstown. He became a university president. He is now the lieutenant governor. And by the way, and lost his job because he wouldn't snitch. Do we not love a white man that can read the room? He's amazing. I mean, because, you know, I'm thinking about this myself. Like, there's just some dudes that you think are cool. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:51:14 And he'd be like, no, he can roll. He can fall through. That's all right. You know, and Jim Tressel, in a sweater vest, managed to be one of them dudes. And here's what I think is interesting about it. And this is just a read. I don't know this for certain.
Starting point is 00:51:27 But Nick Saban, it is, I am positive. Because I don't know you've seen that clip with Nick Saban at the people's house doing the electric slide that time. Nick Saban know how to do the electric slide, the bus stop, the Harlem Shuffle, cha-cha slide. He can do them all, right? He has gone in all them houses and done all this stuff
Starting point is 00:51:45 and they all over food, everything else. I don't think Jim Tressel coming in there doing none of that stuff. But I think Jim Tressel ain't no room that Jim Tressel doesn't feel like he can just walk up in. right and so they may add Jim Truson to get out there and dance he'd be like I really don't do that but I sure love another slice of that sweet potato pie mm-mm delicious he was a dude that understood the job too like like Ryan Day understood the job like Urban is different because Urban kind of is made I think of Ohio State like
Starting point is 00:52:14 I think he is a smart football fan come to life in many respects for them Ryan Day is a dude that came from playing for and coaching on the Chip Kelly and we know what that man's culture might do or look like. Not everybody's on the team. And then he shows up at Ohio State as the Oc. And he's great because he does a thing that I didn't think Ohio State was ever going to do. They throw the football.
Starting point is 00:52:36 Like people forget this. You know this because you're like me, you come up with this. Three yards in a cloud of dust is Ohio State football. Yes. And basically since 2018, it's like, no, no, no, we're going to air it out. And not only we're going to air it out,
Starting point is 00:52:49 we're going to have the best wide receivers in the country for a decade. You can do that at Ohio State because everybody on the program. And I don't know that I've seen that at this level anywhere else. To your point of like, you can always get it
Starting point is 00:53:05 because everybody understands, no, no, no, no. We like the Bengals. We tolerate the Browns. The protein is in Columbus. Yep. I didn't think that Homeboy was going to be able to learn that
Starting point is 00:53:17 as quickly as he did. But as soon as Ryan Day clicked with that and it came to go, oh, it's all on me. y'all going to give me everything else I got cool this is what I'm put in front of you yeah trussle got got that job and went to that basketball game and told them don't you worry we're going to beat Michigan understood the assignment understood the assignment this this is why this is why Kyle winningham is going to lose this game this year hey man we said that early on here when he's up there
Starting point is 00:53:46 like I don't have to hate those people maybe you don't but you do You look, put another way, Ryan Day gets home from their game. I forget which one it was, but it was Iowa had just beaten Michigan on that Hank Brown pass. It was cathartic for a lot of us. But one of the beat writers asked about the press conference, hey, did you happen to catch, you know, that dramatic win of Iowa beat Michigan? And he goes, oh yeah, I enjoyed that. And I'm like, yo, I've never heard a head coach. comment, I enjoyed watching this other team lose because it's uncouth, right?
Starting point is 00:54:28 It feels disrespectful, but at that place, it is on brand. What you're going to say, and we will go about our business as if, yes, I want to destroy that team. I'm going to win all the other games too, but I got to destroy that team. No, let me tell you, my 10 years in North Carolina helped me to better understand a consuming rivalry. Now, Carolina Duke is a genteel rivalry by and large. It rarely goes too far, but it is never ending. It's on 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, where you could be anywhere and it puts up that Duke lost at anything.
Starting point is 00:55:09 Duke lost in field hockey in Chapel Hill is going to be a standing ovation. It never stops. Is it just a game? No, it's not. The game is part of this bigger thing, right? Like, but it's never just about the game, even though the game is very, very important. You have to understand. And I guess, BYU, Utah, I guess it's just not consuming in that way.
Starting point is 00:55:33 I mean, it's obviously important. They call it the Holy War for God's sake. But apparently it's not as consuming as I thought it was. Okay, so on that point, Notre Dame and BYU this Saturday is a matchup of two undefeated, top 10 teams, at least one of those teams we think can play for. and win the national championship that be Notre Dame. That game is in Provo. That's also the game that is replacing Notre Dame USC,
Starting point is 00:55:55 which is a rivalry that I never really understood and never got into because it is the antithesis of what you just described in Duke, Carolina, right? Like, I just, I'm not there. What, I think your big point about where college football is going and how we, some of us don't really care about the college football playoff, I do, I love that, I'm of that generation, I want to see a playoff. However, this is the kind of game that used to rate because it would have all, I mean, Catholics and Mormons.
Starting point is 00:56:25 We got two programs that are proud, two programs that are private, two programs that ostensibly should want to hurt each other. And I don't get that going into the Saturday night game on ESPN that, again, features two unbeatens in the top 10 in large part because this is a college football playing game. Yeah. And less of a, no, we got to win. I tell you this, though, I bet it's going to be cracking in that stadium, though. That's the biggest thing to happen in Provo in quite a while. Like, BYU to me, is an interesting sneaky program in terms of its importance. And when I say that, I mean this.
Starting point is 00:57:03 You want BYU into Big 12 because everybody just got them a sellout this year. Ooh. You know what I mean? Like, even if it's not a full sellout, you put BYU on your schedule. It's a lot, no matter who you are or where you are, it's a lot. more Mormons there than you realize. You know how I know that? There's a Mormon church on
Starting point is 00:57:25 127th Street and Lennox in Harlem, USA. I was damn near 37 before I learned that. I remember the first time I walked past and I was just like okay, I had
Starting point is 00:57:41 no idea. But all I'm saying is they are a bigger, they matter in a different way that I think that people realize, right? Like that is it is the, it is the, the, the representation of the church of Jesus Christ and Latter-day Saints in public that is treated with the greatest level of normalcy than any other. Like, they're going to, in the NIL era, they're going to be good because they got money. All right.
Starting point is 00:58:09 They are going to spend the money because, like I said about OU, there's an importance to this team being good. And they're going to be, they're going to have it rocking for that game. hope that Marcus Freeman understands, you're going to be going over there to play at altitude. Some of those guys on that team are 36 years old. And, oh, by the way, Bear Bachmeier looks like a child in the face. That is 270. I know they list them at less, but 270 pounds of, oh, ooh, here's my comp.
Starting point is 00:58:43 People hate this. I like saying it out loud. Jamarcus Russell. Oh, that's the comp. Who just so people understand was a beast. in college. A beast. Look, look, they're going to play the game without their best player
Starting point is 00:58:56 and the Big 12 offensive player of the year last year, and L.J. Martin, tailback, right? BYU. But since then, it has become the Bear Bachmeier show and either he's going to throw you open or he's just going to do what Jamarcus could do or for the younger generation, what Josh Allen can do.
Starting point is 00:59:15 Just run through your defense. Get to the sideline. The way they beat TCU, It was a close game. Texas Christian should have lost that. I'm sure that one really hurt O'Joe from Missouri City. However, it was Bear Bachmeier running through the middle of the defense for 17 yards for a TD to win that football game. And, you know, like Chris Ash got a defense over there.
Starting point is 00:59:40 If Leonard Moore plays, that's the best defender in the sport on the perimeter, right? Best cornerback, right? First round pick in the cornerback position. But outside of that, like, playing it out to two, playing it. with that crowd in your ear, yelling at you the whole time, and if BYU can control the football behind bear running right, bear running left, it becomes a game that they can win. I think you're right about what the atmosphere is going to be. But to your point about, like, how important it is, we got dudes that have already written into their will what BYU was getting
Starting point is 01:00:09 and their millionaires. Yeah. I've heard about people, you know, given part of their state to the school, I've never heard about people being in their 30s saying that I've already done. This is already done. Don't worry about it. the look on your face. You know, like, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey. You got a lot of time. You can say it, right? And you got children, I'm sure, that are mad as hell.
Starting point is 01:00:33 I always enjoy meeting somebody that hasn't been nervous them to be mad about a trust foreigner inheritance or something they were supposed to get. Like, nah, uh-uh. If they want to give it to the football team, I'm all for that because, A, I like football. And B, I want to know what these men actually love. actually love. Because too much of this is around business now. Like,
Starting point is 01:00:55 it used to be a sunk cost that wasn't one because we all knew what we were sinking it into. You know, like, I'm going to go spend this money that is absurd on this player. You're not getting any of that back. Don't nobody care about that, but I do. And I get to say that part out loud. They still got that at BYU.
Starting point is 01:01:12 And I think they still got that at Notre Dame. That, I think, is what might power us into the future. Is there still a few of us they got a little bit of more money than we need that are going to go, how much is that five-star cost? Cool, here you go. Yeah, I say this again about this sport.
Starting point is 01:01:29 People don't get it. Nobody's in this for a profit. And that's, they're in it for money, but not for a profit, ball to you fall. That's the nature of this. Last thing, before we get out of here,
Starting point is 01:01:42 we got Ole Miss in Missouri this week, and I actually think this is a very underrated game, not just because I think Missou is probably a little better than people might think. But this Austin Simmons, Trinidad, Chambliss matchup, where these were the, Austin Simmons was number one on the depth chart to start the year last year at Ole Miss. Not the greatest start, got hurt, Chambliss took over, and we see what that has become,
Starting point is 01:02:05 where Chambliss is probably the best quarterback in the country right now. However, Austin Simmons is playing really well for Mizzou this year. Austin Simmons was a big deal. I don't get the feeling these two dudes have any sort of animus, it's still a really interesting matchup, and it's one that Ole Miss has got to go play on the road. They're similar, too, because they both got quarterbacks that can spin it,
Starting point is 01:02:27 and they both got tailbacks that are otherworldly. Jamal Roberts became the first SEC tailback to rush for 200-yard back-to-back games against an SEC opponent since Fournette, and Derek Henry. That's one. Two is Austin Simmons is kind of a unicorn. Like, he graduated high school at 16 and, you know,
Starting point is 01:02:46 got the Masters at 19. but lost his job after you kind of sprained his ankle. And the dude that they brought in has thrown for 300 yards a game in every game. Like, you're not getting your job back off that. The thing is, and I think you'll love this, honestly. Pete Golding will be the reason that they lose that football game. I have never seen a man so interested in holding a play card that probably shouldn't because the defense gets worse when he's coaching it in the regular season
Starting point is 01:03:21 and then it turns up in the postseason. And now you got a guy in Austin Simmons who has spent the last three years playing against your defense, knowing exactly what you doing. And that is his calling card. He reads the game. He's very good cereally.
Starting point is 01:03:38 He's at a couple games where I'm going, hey, what's going on here? And it has been guys dropping the football, right? Or the run game hasn't been there. But I'm interested insofar as I think Austin Simmons has the core processor to take apart a Pete Golding defense in a way that is going to make that man maniacal
Starting point is 01:03:55 because he is so much of an X's and O's guy that he thinks his defense ought to be like Bill Walsh's West Coast offense. If you do it, it works. Nah, not against a dude that sees it because he has the ability to make you wrong. That is what I think is going to be fun. Here's my question on that part.
Starting point is 01:04:13 I asked this somewhat rhetorically. Pete was kind enough to give me 10 to 15 minutes when I did the feature on a channel. I recall him telling me that it did not take him very long to realize who should have been the starting quarterback of that team and that it should have been Chambers. Now, that may be on one hand simply him thinking very highly of Chambleau in that time. Or B, it is some combination of that and he ain't really see it for Austin Simmons. and I am curious how whatever his personal evaluation was from that time, how that goes into the game plan that we are talking about here.
Starting point is 01:04:57 Because there is a world in which Pete underestimates this dude. And there's also a world where one day Pete says something a little while to that boy at practice. And he remembers this. And now we're going. And to be clear, he didn't say anything bad about Simmons to me, right? I don't want to pretend like he taught, like he like he, like he, like he, He crashed him. But he was really like, yeah, I can tell him pretty quickly that this was the guy. That's how, granted, he says this after he's now the head coach and Chamble's is his guy.
Starting point is 01:05:25 But I would be very curious to know in his own heart of hearts what he really thinks of Simmons as a player and how that goes into what this game is going to be. I think his assessment to you is the correct one based on his point of view, which is defense coordinator. and what defensive coordinators hate more than anything else is a dude that can make the wrong just running around. That's right. That ain't what Austin Simmons is going to do, right? Unlike what Jackson and Dart was going to do because, I mean, maybe Pete forgot that Austin went into that game
Starting point is 01:05:58 and immediately drove them down the field because he knew what the offense was doing and he was accurate with the ball. That is why he won the job in camp, right? It was that. Trinidad was still a dude that was D-2 from Fair State, which, by the way, is around the way from Mississippi. Michigan, but somehow they didn't go recruit him and was supposed to be kind of there for,
Starting point is 01:06:16 you know, if something goes bad, something goes wrong. Well, it kind of did go bad and he kind of turned out to be who he is. But I think if Austin could move around, he might change his assessment just a little bit more, or Austin was willing to move around. That ain't what he does. Trinidad is a playmaker, especially when the game is on the line. Like that, that's a guy that I'm terrified of as a defense coordinator because I know when it's tight, he's going to raise up. And I know when I got a defense that got everybody covered up, he could still beat me getting to a first down mark. R.J. Young, check him out at the R.J. Young show.
