This is our billionth pod this week. Brother, we've been locked in to, you know what I'm saying? We've been in the gym, you know, three beats a day for five summers. I've literally been locked in because I've been sick with the cooties for
Starting point is 00:02:48 a couple of days. Yes. How are you feeling good? Oh, we're bouncing back. We're all fine. We're just taking our healthy precautions as usual. Very safe. And we've got a lot more coming. Mask up a few outside. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:04 It's too damn hot anyway. I'm not standing now. be safe out there. Good Lord. Speaking of which, things to come, so many more things to come. We've been doing a lot and we've got more things to do. Tomorrow, the Midnight Boys are going to be giving you their reactions to Deadpool and Wolverine.
Starting point is 00:03:26 I won't be a part of that. I was out when we recorded that. But guess who will? Oh, boy. Sean Finlayson and Amanda Dobbins. That's right. Oh, my goodness. It's a big pick
Starting point is 00:03:36 Midnight Boys crossover. That's right. This is a great foreign exchange. Did you get any gifts? Did you shake hands at the border? We did not shake hands because we're trying to be safe out here. But we did a little home and home. We had they came on the Midnight Boys and we went on the big pick.
Starting point is 00:03:58 It was very much like it was an awesome experience, honestly, because we had like the little, you know, serious conversation. on the big pick we put our suits and ties on and then he went to the midnight boys and just let loose and have a blast so tune in for that it's awesome now how many times were the was the term mizan sen used on the big picture with you guys talking about you know if you think that you know that would be from sean or Amanda but that was Charles actually wow Charles was out there yeah Charles was Sean audition for that third year and 11 so that that's that's not even that's not even a question I don't know why you'd be laughing
Starting point is 00:04:35 with that. That's not even, I have any, I genuinely don't know what's going to be. I'm going to be, you have no idea. With everybody to know what you guys think. Uh, but continuing on, we might be reporting from a little San Diego Comic-Con action from the Midnight Boys on Saturday. Who knows what's to come there. But also, coming sometime this weekend, House of Our and Talk Thrones has been having a little bit of a scheduling hiccup, but sometime this weekend, we're going to be giving you more. Talk the Thrones the moment that the episode goes live and House of R as well. Now, where can all the fine folks at home stay in touch with all of that, Jomey? They can find us on Instagram, on Twitter, on TikTok, and on Facebook at Ringaverse.

Starting point is 00:05:50 Content corner coppies almost- Is it? I don't know. I can't even see the end. Yeah. Oh, man. When is it ending? The finish line.
Starting point is 00:05:57 You got to hold on the finish line right there. I don't, I feel like that dude at the end of a marathon where his like his legs are buckling and he's just like shaking all over the place. You're at mile 29, or 29, Jesus Christ. You're at mile 24. Good Lord. Wait.
Starting point is 00:06:12 Okay. Hold on. Do you know how many miles are in a marathon? 26.2. I know that. Wow. Wow. You did that.
Starting point is 00:06:20 I do know that. I literally, look, it's been a rough week. A lot of podcasting, not a lot of sleep. That's okay. Listen, this is a minute addition, baby. We could let loose the burnout all we want. trying my best, please bear with me.

Starting point is 00:07:03 thinking of one. What a future say? Mask on? Mask on? That's the comment. That comment is mask on. Mask on. Okay.
Starting point is 00:07:16 Hey, listen, we're surging right now, so definitely masks on. Mask on. That's the comment. Mask on. Yes,
Starting point is 00:07:21 Mask on. All right. There you go. Super secret comment for all the mint edition folks. Mask on. All right. To get to the show today.
Starting point is 00:07:29 Let's do it. What are you talking about? Steve. We were talking about a couple of things. We've been away for a minute. All right. We're gonna have, we got two shows,
Starting point is 00:07:37 but we got a few on, as they say, to talk about today. All right, we're gonna be talking about My Adventures with Superman, just wrapped up its second season
Starting point is 00:07:46 and the debut of the, honestly, shocking and surprising development of a spin-off series, Kiteman, Hell yeah. Hell yeah. Also today on the show,
Starting point is 00:07:58 we're gonna be talking with Matt Oberg. That's right. Kiteman himself is going to be joining us, today along with our discussion of Kite Man. Hell yeah, we're very excited about that. So without further ado, let's get to My Adventures with Superman Season 2. Clark, I am so sorry.
Starting point is 00:08:18 I was scared, so I pushed you away. But love is not for cowards. You are kind and sweet and strong. Not because of your powers, but because of your heart. I didn't name you Superman because of what you could do. I called you that because it's who you are. I love you, Clark Kent.
Starting point is 00:08:47 I will always love you, Lois Lane. My Adventure was Superman, Season 2. The anime adventure that everybody's been loving, just finished its second season. Spoilers, by the way, for everything that's happened in My Adventure to Superman and pretty much all of DC lore that's coming up. Jomi,
Starting point is 00:09:09 Season one was a sleeper hit. What did you like about season one? How did you enjoy season two? Little snapshot. I loved the earnestness of season one a lot. You know, we don't, at least my generation. We don't get. Yeah, old man.
Starting point is 00:09:26 Okay, great. We don't get. No, but in like recent media, all our superhero or all our Superman and Superman adjacent characters are all evil and mean at the, worst and at the best they're brooding and dark and like mysterious. You know, this Superman is altruistic. He's, all he wants to do is help. All he wants to do is really be happy.
Starting point is 00:09:55 And it was a different look for Superman that I had seen. And I thought it was fantastic. It was awesome. It was just like a very simple by the numbers Superman story. But it works all the characters. are alive. They make you feel so warm and fuzzy. Lois Lane is great.
Starting point is 00:10:16 Jimmy, Perry. The kids, the little Flamebird kids. So I was really into season one. So season two coming out. I'm like, yo, sign me up. And they take it to another level in the second season. They throw some new characters in there. They throw some storylines in there.
Starting point is 00:10:32 Some that you expect. And some are like, oh, this is new. This is interesting. But at the end of this entire season, I was very, very happy with where it ended, and I'm excited. I'm super excited to see more in the future. I love this show. I couldn't agree more.
Starting point is 00:10:50 I, what I enjoyed the most about My Adventure for Superman season one and two is, first of all, it's pretty much the anti-Snyder version. It's basically my warm salve and remedy for all of that angst that I was used to for so many years. and I feel like naysayers and contrarians would call this show a tad hokey or maybe a bit traditionalist. But I think that the beauty of this is like the beating heart of Jack Quaid's Clark Kent and Superman performance. And it's more so the Clark Kent persona because there's so much good guy from Kansas
Starting point is 00:11:36 here that honestly you need to kind of tap into a bit more to understand what makes Superman so great. And you buy into it the more and more you hear from him. I think that as simplistic and honestly, you know, kind of stalwart and righteous the idea of Superman can be, it's honestly just earnest. And it's a good time. And I think that at the heart of Jack Wade's performance is something that's really really special because I never disbelieve it. I never think that it's over the top. I never think that it's too corny or, like I said, Hokie before.
Starting point is 00:12:18 I think it just works. And it works very well with the type of anime-esque pastiche that this is trying to emulate. It's very much akin to a sort of Gurin Lagan light, a kind of like odes to kill a kill. I'm not, I'm sure that I'm just saying words to you. Code, code, co-geos. Okay, right, correct? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:42 Correct. I just, I don't, I've never seen that, but I know it's in that same sphere. What do you think that's about, Jomey? What do you think code Gios? That's no idea. I couldn't tell you. Look, man, anime is a whole different universe, okay, because all the, all the imagery looks the same, right?
Starting point is 00:12:58 You know, we're not, that's, okay, that's not fair. They do look different. But in terms of, like, the story, they could be, oh, we're, we're, re-encernetting slime in another universe, or there's mechs that we got to fight in, or, oh my gosh, this guy has, he's got to slay some demons. You know what I mean? There's a lot going on in that area, so I don't want to act like I know things. But what I do know is, you mentioned Jack Quaid.
Starting point is 00:13:26 We've talked a lot about Glenn Powell over the last few weeks. Oh, yeah. Especially at the ringer.com. Theringer.com is the number one Glenn Powell propaganda network. okay that's what we should forget the ringer we're we're power we are powell pilled out here we are g p p n okay glen powell power propaganda network right it's bratt summer it's glen powell summer what else is it well we got jack quay summer man actually it's the year of jack quake let me tell you why it's the quaid quarter at least it's the quade quarter steve because did his thing in the boys
Starting point is 00:14:03 He did great work in the boys this summer. He killed it, like you mentioned, in Adventures with Superman. The, the, earnesty and just the, like, as Superman, as Clark Kent, the level of trust, the level of emotion he's able to bring to this character is incredible, right? And then he's also Brad Weimler on Star Trek Lord Dex, which is coming to you guys sometime later this year. And he's great in that, too. he's always great right and i think you know we got to talk we got to hype up jack more you know i'm saying jack quade you doing your thing my man we see you we love you and we respect you but i think in like two three years he's going to be on that glen pal tract i do i do believe
Starting point is 00:14:49 no but i mean his superman in this show is is just very it's it's perfect it's the perfect superman is the perfect Clark Kent for this show because when he's Superman, you feel his strength, you feel like, oh, that guy is in control of the situation. But when he's Clark, you see the naivete, right?
Starting point is 00:15:13 You see he doesn't exactly know where he's going. Whereas when he's Clark Kent, Lois is the one who's in charge, taking in places, doing the thing. When he's Superman, it's like, oh, that's a guy in charge. Am able to play both of those roles so perfectly and so well?
Starting point is 00:15:29 it speaks to the writing of the show, but also speaks to Jack Quaid's performance. He's killing it. I couldn't agree more. I think that there's a lot of discoverability when it comes to Clark's interactions with the world. Like, he's very easily established as Superman, and like the basically conflict and trajectory
Starting point is 00:15:51 of him becoming a hero is very quickly established, while also the lore of Krypton and basically the, fall of the Kryptonian Empire is onboarded to us very well. Like, we keep getting bogged down in like the things that actually are making Superman tick after he gets sent to Earth and kind of the fallout of Krypton that are things that are happening in his wake, you know, outside of Earth. And the introduction of Brainiac in this season, I think, is something that's really well done. Because all my homie say Brainiac, too many Superman villains get corny.
Starting point is 00:16:28 Too many Superman villains get really played out and kind of serialized in a way that doesn't exactly land. And this one works. Jomi, talk to me about it. All my homies hate Brainiac, bro. He was messing with my boy, Clark. And then my girl Kara was just trying to like, yo, live her life, be a young guy. And he was like, actually, I need you to start destroying planets. All right.
Starting point is 00:16:53 I'm a hater for life. I thought Brainiac was a good villain for this season. You know, again, like the... Played by Michael Emerson, by the way. Like, crazy underrated character actor there. But Brainiac as a villain was great. I thought that bringing Amanda Waller back and Lex, which by the way...
Starting point is 00:17:14 I know... No, no, no, hold on. I'm getting into a gripe here. No. But go ahead, go ahead. So I have a gripe, and it's not with this specific story. It's just how the Superman story goes. is Superman's like,
Starting point is 00:17:27 hey guys, all I do is good things. I've never hurt anybody myself. All I've done is protect people. And then people are like, actually he's bad. He's going to kill us all. We need to be careful.
Starting point is 00:17:38 And the Superman's like, guys, I cannot stress enough how much I love and I care for this world. And I'll do no harm to it. And they're like, that's what he wants us to think. That's insane.
Starting point is 00:17:52 It's so annoying. I get it? It's such a no use. you, it's opposite day. I know why they have to do it. I get it. But it's like all these, like, you know what I mean? It's like the guy who comes and he's like real nice.
Starting point is 00:18:04 And then somebody's like, I don't trust him. He's evil. And all he's ever done is be kind. It's like, what's wrong with you? Right, which again, like the sort of like the genesis of the paranoia that Superman can be is that he's like a nuclear deterrent with feelings. And if he even succumbs to like either mind control. Like, Batman's had this argument for years.
Starting point is 00:18:28 We've had, like, a million different types of case scenarios. Like, all right, what if he goes bad one day? Like, that basically is the impetus for distrusting Superman. My, like, slight gripe, and while I like this portrayal of Lex Luthor, I think I'm just tired of Lex Luthor being sniveling tech bro as opposed to Titan of industry, Uber-rich billionaire. No, I get it. like confident like i get that you don't like jessie arisenberg kind of ruined it for me i'm sorry no no i see what you mean you don't like white lex luther you like racially ambiguous lex luther i mean that was
Starting point is 00:19:06 the cooler lex luther yeah but like but like like tall justice league unlimited dressed like justice league young justice when he's bald and is he black or where's he from that kind of lex luther gets the job done i see it it's more of the fact that like i i i like the idea of a Luthor that's like a tad older than Superman and thusly making him a bit more cynical rather than
Starting point is 00:19:34 either as old if not younger than Clark and then that that making it like either naive or sniveling I don't know I feel like I like my I feel like I like the main villain of Superman to be a bit of a like longer in the tooth a bit. Well
Starting point is 00:19:52 I think it's a bit more gravitas there. Yeah yeah He's, I mean, he's not the main feeling yet. We, you know, we've seen him for like two seasons. I mean, he did Jimmy Dirty, playing him against his boy. You know what I mean? So, you know, he might have a little bit, I mean, he did, I don't know if he did that. He did that unknowingly, but still, you know, so he has some sauce there. And it's not so much annoying because, again, like, I like this.
Starting point is 00:20:11 This is the best case scenario of that. I just think that I like that flavor of Lex a bit more. Sure. Or a bit better. Sure. So let's talk about Superman's friends, uh, Jimmy Olson and. Lois Lane. Lois Lane doesn't take the job.
Starting point is 00:20:28 She doesn't take the Gotha job. I'm not going to be questioning the journalistic integrity of one Lois Lane. But Vicki Vale's putting in hours. Okay. No, man. Don't do that to my girl, Lois Lane, bro.
Starting point is 00:20:42 You know, she's young. She's trying to get it out of the mud. I understand, but here's a press box. Okay. Here's the thing about Vicky Vale, right? Gotham is just a dirtier city. It's light work over there. There's criminals all over the place.
Starting point is 00:20:57 No, I understand. No, that's definitely talking about. Vicki's got her hands dirty. Nah, but you know, she's a metropolis. It's a little, I'm not going to say it's like the G League or some, but it's a little light outside of Superman. It's kind of chilling, you know what I mean? You go to Gotham.
Starting point is 00:21:12 This is it. You step off the block. I'm not getting these fine journalists against each other. I'm not doing this. I'm not doing that. I'm just saying, respect Lois. You know, I understand it's a different ball league. But, you know,
Starting point is 00:21:24 She posted 10 minutes before, Vicky. You know, she's been to the story. It's great. I mean, like, I think this, and they have, like, they break up in the middle of the season, which, you know, you got to do it, you're right? Sure. No. I see, they break up for like a second, really.
Starting point is 00:21:41 Yeah. Like, the second that they break up, they're like, okay, well, like, they don't even get cozy back up to it. Really, they don't break up because as soon as they get each other again, they're like, hey, what's going on? That never happened. Yeah, no, no, we're curious. I love you.
Starting point is 00:21:53 Who gives? And it sucked for lowest, too, because, like, you know, I don't think she really meant that. You know, she was just in her feelings a little bit, which, you know, what happens. And it was tough. Jimmy, on the other hand. Oh, great season for our boy, Jimmy. Grayson, first of all, here's thing, he did go broke. He was trying to say his man.
Starting point is 00:22:12 Sure, sure. But he spent all that cash. That's true. He was doing the right thing. And he fell in love. It's not like he was blown it on NFTs or whatever the fuck. That's good. He invested in people.
Starting point is 00:22:24 Was it into blockchain? No. Lex put him in the blockchain. He's a pump and dump guy for sure. He didn't get like, oh yeah, you see my board ape NFTs? Yeah, I just bought, you know, remember those times? There's a board ape store, like, maybe like a quarter mile away from me. And I laugh at it every time.
Starting point is 00:22:43 There's no way it's not bored it up right now. No, it definitely is not. It is not. There is a security guard just standing there doing absolutely nothing. What does he guarding vibes? I don't know. He's got it. Yeah, and guess what?
Starting point is 00:22:56 They're rancid in there. You've got to be rancid in there. Jimmy Olson found himself a Supergirl. I tell you. I love that for him. I really do. Honestly, to know that like,
Starting point is 00:23:10 listen, Supergirl comes down. Literally the first human that she sees is you. And it's like, oh, ice cream. Oh, slice of life.
Starting point is 00:23:21 Like montage. So here's the thing. Are you shooting your shot then? Or you shooting it like what? Like, day two? No, I'm not, again, I mean, I'm not a shooter. What is this dating? What is this?
Starting point is 00:23:35 Yeah, I'm not a shooter. I would honestly, I would not like, well, I would just be like, we'd just be having fun. And then she'd be like, yo, I got to go. And then I would be like, I have feelings for you, but I would never say it. I would just let her leave. Then I have to wallow in my sadness after she's gone and be like, I should have said something. I had my opportunity. Wow, Joe.
Starting point is 00:23:53 You know what? I was not familiar with your game. Yeah. It's a sad game. It's an advanced technique. No, that's great. I love the introduction of Supergirl here. It's a really great.
Starting point is 00:24:11 Carmen chats like, love yourself, bro. The answer is no. The answer is no. You see a woman like that, a woman who can like fly and, and shoot lays out her eyes. You think I'm getting rejected. now, brother. I'm letting it slide. I'm like, look.
Starting point is 00:24:25 Wow. At some point, we all dies. This is all preventative. It's all preventative, man. You know what I'm saying? Because now, now, think about it. Now, you got to remember now. She's out there saving the world. I'm on TV. I'm like, yeah, bro. I got rejected by Supergirl, bro. Y'all going to laugh at me. It's funny. You know what I'm saying?
Starting point is 00:24:44 Are you kidding me? I feel like. No, that's like, that's like, oh, man, like, I matched with that one celebrity on Raya one time. Like that was the like, oh man, like that's, no. But if you shoot your shot and if you get you get blocked, you know what I'm saying? If you shoot your shot, actually like, I'm good actually. You feel me? I do like there is a level of, hey, man, you did your thing. But also there is some shame involved.
Starting point is 00:25:08 And I don't think I need that in my life right now. I'm shameful enough, you know? Of course. Of course. Well, honestly, a great turn from from Supergirl here. I really did like the fact that we got. episode and a half's worth of camaraderie between the two of them before it's like
Starting point is 00:25:30 the show's very good at establishing an internal conflict first and then setting those applying those stakes into real life in a tangible way. Like allowing her to know like, okay, this is my cousin. I'm sent here to find him. Why is he so kind and nice? He's like in a world full of ants.
Starting point is 00:25:51 they should be worshipping him like it's so easy to fall into like the the omneman trap with her because it like is kind of evoking a little bit it was very much yeah which again like that's the whole omneman thing is like you know like
Starting point is 00:26:07 that's supposed to be Superman anyway but I love the idea that there's like a there's an internal conflict within her to know that like oh well you're actually my kin and my father quote unquote being brainiac isn't exactly
Starting point is 00:26:23 having my best interest at heart. What did you think of this final conflict? What did you think of the wonderfully contrived ways that they can get Lois and Jimmy into space to help out Clark? That was one of my favorite episodes, honestly. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:26:37 Just a wild side quest to get everybody into space? Well, like those, so those three episodes, the episode where Jimmy meets Supergirl, the episode where they are in space,
Starting point is 00:26:50 with Supergirl and Clark, and then the episode where they go and rescue or they try and go to meet them in space are all fantastic episodes. That episode of Articolor is great because of the Livewire heat wave of it all. They had that little fight at the beginning. I'm like, yo, LiveWire, you're so, man.
Starting point is 00:27:09 That girl was, all she wanted to do is go to the farm and race chickens. I mean, what's going on? But it turns out, but they were, they've been locked in. You know what I'm saying? And I love that. I love me a heist, you know, a movie, a heist plot also.
Starting point is 00:27:25 But for the Supergirl over at all, I thought they did, like you mentioned, like they establish her what she wants in like a little like like the scene and the episode with her and Clark where Clark goes into her little cabinet of trinkets. Yeah. You know? And all she wants to do was just like see things and be places and hang with people. It just be a normal person. but she can't do that because she's supposed to, you know, take over worlds and stuff.
Starting point is 00:27:53 Even though she doesn't know like the destruction she's causing or even capable of to them. Exactly. But she is still, all she wants to do is just be a normal girl somewhere in the universe. And it's not until she realizes what's going on with Brainiac when Clark calls him out. And it's like, oh my gosh, you've been using me my entire life. I don't want this. I want something better. I've always wanted something better for myself. But now is now in this moment, I'm realizing I need to change my ways. And like you said, the show does an awesome job of setting those stakes. And I thought her journey, Clark's journey, Lois's journey with her father, which we haven't talked about, but was great too. And Jimmy's journey this season was all done very, very well. Let's talk about the general and how he's very paranoid. And you kind of have to be.
Starting point is 00:28:48 under him though. When you got on a state secrets. When you deal with Amanda Waller, for sure. Yeah. Yeah. You got to, you got to know, the people's coming for me, you know, I get it. I understand. I mean, is he's a bit of a dick, for sure. Well, yeah. I'm, you know, let's, you know, he could be a protective. A very protective. We'll go. Yeah. Sure. Yeah. I just, I, I, I never really, like,
Starting point is 00:29:13 I never fully got on board with him. I was, I was never fully in with him. I, I, I, I, I, I, I, just I really was a tad. It was, to me, it was a tad sluggish when it was getting him back out of, back on the outs with Waller and kind of making that, uh, robotics plot a bit with like Lex and everything. Like that was a, that was a bit off base for me. But only to like get us back to like the final stretch of the end of the season, I, I really liked it still. Um, what I will say though, uh, I, I love, I love.
Starting point is 00:29:48 a trapped in somebody's mind post finale to, you know. Groundhog Day, too. Groundhog Day, but also friendship, power of friendship ending. Power of love, power of friendship ending. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It was great.
Starting point is 00:30:06 Any final thoughts on my adventures with Superman? Season three, baby. Renewed for season three. Very exciting. Are we, okay. little prediction time. Are we going to get
Starting point is 00:30:21 any Justice League action here? Are we going to see a Batman? Are we going to see anybody? Are we going to be hinting at a bigger universe here or is there going to be like probably an expanded show at some point? Because the show is hitting. Probably not. As much as fun as that as fun as that would be,
Starting point is 00:30:43 I don't think we'll ever like, I mean, we could see like came. Remember in the Superman show when Batman came to God or to Metropolis for a couple days and he was wilding with Lois you know what I'm saying? Like,
Starting point is 00:30:58 steals his girl for a second. Right. We might be on, we might be on that type of timing. Bruce is always on demon time with Lois. Bruce is always on demon time, man. Oh my goodness. But I don't,
Starting point is 00:31:11 I could see that. You know, it'd be great to see you know, the flash show of that universe and Martian Manhunter and Green Lantern. and all that stuff, but I doubt we'll get like a, you know, my eventual Superman universe. You know what I mean? Because the creature commandos, you know what I'm saying?
Starting point is 00:31:27 It's expensive. It's expensive and you've got to make creature commandos. Listen, I, again, I think that there could be a safe distance between James Guns, creature commandos, and everything that could be entailed there and my adventure of Superman. I remember, they threw, they changed the time when season one aired. It's supposed to come out like Sundays at like nine or whatever. they're like actually make it come out at midnight.
Starting point is 00:31:50 We're doing on adult swim at midnight. Good luck. And we were like, hey, actually, we messed up with the show, bro. Turn this thing on. It was like, fine. Fine. I know, but like the whole tsunami of it all. Like, it has to.
Starting point is 00:32:03 The whole tsunami of it all has to be like, all right, at 3 a.m. Come on. Did you ever, when tsunami was popping off, how old were you? Around that time? Like, you got the DBZs, you got your... I didn't have cable. But I didn't get you on. Oh, you had cable back then.
Starting point is 00:32:17 Okay. Because I, like, I just barely tapped into, like, adult swim. And that was like, it started at midnight. And I was, like, maybe 12 or 13. And it's like, when do you think I'm going to watch this anime that I've really wanted to see at 4 a.m? On a Sunday. Well, no. Well, Tsunami came.
Starting point is 00:32:36 Because the programming block started, started at, like, around 11. And it went till, like, three or four a. So when did adult swim start? Adult swim started in, like, the 90s. And that was like this weird, like, maybe like, like, late night or like evening into late night programming. Okay. And then once the 2000s hit, Tunaimi took that over for the late night programming. And then pushed adults would later?
Starting point is 00:33:01 I believe so. Yeah. Because then, yeah. Yes. Because then Tunami kind of like integrated with adult swim because it was like Tsunami for like anime programming. And then it dabbled into like an adult swim show like a space ghost or an aquatine or something like that. Mm-hmm. Okay.
Starting point is 00:33:15 That makes sense. The only thing I watched on Adult Swim was Robot Chicken. So that's not sure. I've watched Aqua. Big Robot Chicken was pretty great, though. Early Robot Chicken was pretty good. So funny. So funny.

All I know is when I was a kid, I'd sit in my room and I'd try. dream about being a super villain. My mom would knock on the door and say,
Starting point is 00:35:50 Chuck, what are you doing in there? And I'd say, not masturbating. And she'd say, that feels like something a masturbator would say, well, masturbating. And I'd be all like, Mom, I will tell you why I masturbating. Jesus fuck. Telling that nasty-ass story. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:36:05 All right, before we get into Kite Man, quick spoiler warning, episodes 1 and 3 are out right now for you guys to enjoy. Be sure to check it out. It's really fun. Jomi. honestly, I'm shocked we're talking about this. You didn't believe in Kiteman? First of all, okay, no, hold on Chuck Brown.
Starting point is 00:36:23 I always believe in Chuck Brown, first of all. Don't you, don't you dare? First of all, but no, when I first heard that Kite Man was getting a spinoff from our beloved Harley Quinn, I was immediately elated, but I genuinely didn't know if it was going to happen because the Zazlov machine gets a little tricky. That's true. That's true.
Starting point is 00:36:42 And I did not know if this was going to happen. but thank God that it did a spin off of our wonderful animated Harley Quinn show that we've championed on the show before season four, bit of a stumble, but we love that show, we love Kiteman, and we get a spinoff of
Starting point is 00:36:59 Hater, come on, Joe Me, run that back. Come on, we had that talk. Come on now. We talked about it. We got a brand new spinoff. Kiteman buys a bar. He buys a bar. for $10 million.
Starting point is 00:37:16 And he gets that in episode one. Look, funding, you know what I'm saying? It's easy when you're Kite Man, dude. It's easy. I, I wasn't, I was the only Kiteman fan for a long time. The only one, first of all, I'm with you here. Maybe, but I remember I would go into the Reddits.
Starting point is 00:37:35 I'd go to the Twitters. I'd be like, who's Kiteman? Why's Kiteman on this show? But me, man, I see me, some Chuck. I'm like, hell yeah. And so to see the spin-off getting out, so I was like, cool, you know, I don't know what he's going to do, but I want to see it. Let's see what's cooking. And the show's got, it's got some juice. It's got some juice. Darkside shows up. Lex Luthor is like the main villain. You know, all the side characters are pretty interesting and like more fleshed out
Starting point is 00:38:12 than they are in the Harley Quinn show. I am excited. Bain? Of course. Bain. Of course, Bain. Joins got to make that. No.
Starting point is 00:38:22 I'm shocked at how, I'm shocked at how refreshing this feels. Especially knowing that we've had four seasons of Harley Quinn. And Kite Man's been a bit on the sidelines for this. And I was worried that we would have a bit of a,
Starting point is 00:38:38 like, the beauty of Kite Man is that he bounces off of everybody else so well. And to know that he's centered in this and has a slightly different set of characters, different set of stakes, different, like, kind of origin here. I really like this. I think that it's refreshing.
Starting point is 00:38:55 We're not looking exactly for a bit more of a, like, lore-rich type of examination of a character like we did with Harley Quinn because this was brand new to us. This is kind of a guy that, like, who is inherently a joke, and that we're going to be kind of working with from square one. And I think that's exciting. And I think we can probably throw it to our conversation
Starting point is 00:39:22 to find out more about what's to come and what we like about the show so far. All right, Junior Mints, it's time. Matt Oberg, Kiteman himself. Kiteman, hell yeah. It's out there for the people. Welcome to the show. How does it feel?
Starting point is 00:39:38 It's a miracle. I feel. relieved and grateful to have a you know for harley queen to have had the success that it did was um or that it's having is uh is really remarkable then for them to want a spin off and then for that spin off to be kite man it's um it's all pretty uh it's all pretty remarkable to me and i'm just so grateful that it you know it has gotten over the finish line for this first season so i'm i'm psyched yeah man like You know, folks like me, we fell in love with Kite Man because he's so goofy,
Starting point is 00:40:16 despite his whole villain persona. Why do you think that fans resonated with Chuck Brown so much? I think it's probably because he doesn't have any powers, and neither to me. We are all powerless, which is the show that Justin and Patrick did. But we all want to. have the cool shit that some of these people can do. And we don't, none of us have that cool shit.
Starting point is 00:40:51 And I think people can resonate with that. And then I think also he got broken up with kind of hardcore in Harley Quinn. And I think that's an experience. A lot of people bring some personal firsthand knowledge to so that there's a bond I have with, for the kite, man has with those people as well. Now, I'm curious. You get the call,
Starting point is 00:41:20 the offer, the insight, the ask to be like, hey, I think we might want to make a kite man show. What's your reaction when you hear about like, really? Is it surprise? Is it shock? Is it like, we're going to be doing this?
Starting point is 00:41:35 What goes through your head when you hear something like that? I was, you know, I sort of know, Justin a little bit as a friend as well. So he was telling me, this is Justin Halpern, was telling me a little bit about, you know, what they were bringing to them to the studio
Starting point is 00:41:54 and that they were looking for a spinoff. And he said that people responded to the Kiteman pitch really positively. And I was excited and sort of, you know, a surprise that that was an idea that they said out loud and that other people agreed with. But then for it to, you know, get through the gauntlet of everything that has to get through. You know, we went through to strikes and everything to finally get this there.
Starting point is 00:42:25 So initial surprise that the idea was said out loud and that other people agree with it. And then shocked that it lasted. Now, that's interesting. Development was going through the strikes and all of these other, like, trials and tribulations. it's hard to get any production made or much less done and out there to the people. Like, were there any, like, big changes or, like, ups and downs that you can recall that were something that, like, oh, was this going to be in jeopardy? Is this might not, could this might not happen?
Starting point is 00:42:55 Not that I recall. And to be clear, the thing did, the production did shut down for the strikes and everything. But I don't think there was any significant change to scripts or the schedule, maybe the schedule, but scripts or character development or anything like that as a result of that. I wasn't privy to any of that. But no, I don't think it really changed anything. So you mentioned, you know, the previous relationship with Poison Ivy going awry. In this series, you're flanked by Golden Glider.
Starting point is 00:43:35 How is that different for Kite Man? It seems healthier, but how does that change the character? in this series. You know, to love someone fully and to have them not love you back in a way that you deserve doesn't feel good. And then to have that relationship end and initially you feel like, oh my God, that's the worst thing that ever happened to me. But it happens for a reason.
Starting point is 00:44:04 And then to find someone who can return, reflect the love you give right back. at you, you realize, oh, this is, this is what I really wanted the whole time. So, I think the difference is that it's not fucked up, you know. You're saying, I mean, what you're saying is, Matt, is that Golden Glider and Kiteman match each other's freaks. I think so. I mean, as the show goes on, her level of freakiness becomes more apparent to him. And that's part of the story that maybe you guys have seen that, you know,
Starting point is 00:44:48 she's concerned about how hardcore freaky she is. But that doesn't scare kite man away. Nor should it. Nor should it. He's a man of action. He's a man of nature. Now, one of the things that we loved about like the early seasons of Harley Quinn,
Starting point is 00:45:07 and this show as well is there's like an element of, you know, a lot of adult humor, but also like heavy-hating themes of like family and acceptance and a lot of things that are resonating with all of this. And by the time this comes out, the third episode will have aired. And we were wondering if there's anything that like came to you in the process of making the show that really struck you as something that was like very earnest that like both of these shows have been carrying over.
Starting point is 00:45:36 Yeah, it is, there's like, earnest parts of this show here and there. And for me as an actor and as like a human being, those movements are making me uncomfortable, you know? They're like, that's hard to do, you know, like intimate, you know, things between him and Golden Glider or whatever. You feel, at least I do. I feel weird being alone with the microphone, like acting those things, just for the first couple seconds where you're like,
Starting point is 00:46:11 okay, I'm going to really commit to this. It feels, it feels strange to me. But then once you allow yourself to commit to it, then you can relax. And I think the show really sort of does that really well, just in the writing and everything. So I'm grateful that they've given me that opportunity. but it is not what I initially expected back when Harley Quinn started.
Starting point is 00:46:41 I didn't really see that coming, especially for this doofist character. I didn't really, I don't know if they would have hired me had they have known that that was a part that they were going to use, but it was really, it was nice for me to find the courage within myself to do that. It was cathartive. Now, speaking of the writing, the writing is great. I mean, for Carly Quinn for this show, you know, the energies of your character match across both of these shows. When you're in the booth, because Kaiman does a lot of, it's like stops and starts in his speech.
Starting point is 00:47:20 Is that written in or is that something that you just go off the dome? Like, you're like, I'm Kiteman. I just let it fly. It's a little bit of both, I think. I mean, you can hear as I speak now, there's a sort of the late great Bob Newhart had that, you know, it might be before your time, but he had a hitching giddy up too. And I think that's something I naturally do. And I think sometimes they write to that as well.
Starting point is 00:47:49 And Kiteman often has moments where he doesn't quite know how to handle a situation too. So maybe that's part of it. But I think to answer your question, it's both. But now that I'm listening to myself speak, I'm realizing how much I do. No, there's a wonderful, you mentioned Bob Newhart, and there was a wonderful cadence that he had. There was a joke where he has a member of the Slow Talkers Society.
Starting point is 00:48:18 And he would finish a sentence so slowly next to a person. And there's a couple of rhythms that you have where you kind of go up and then down and then you can't believe what you're saying. And I'm like, I actually, you mentioned that. I'm like, I might be hearing a little bit of new heart. I know. You have to be careful not to fall into an impression of yourself, you know, once you, I don't want to be imitating something I've done before.
Starting point is 00:48:44 You have to try to keep it natural. So I try not to, like you guys, we're all wearing headphones right now, but I don't really like to hear myself when I'm doing it because it sort of freaks me out and gets in my head about what I actually sound like. And it's a weird way to have a conversation where you're kind of listening to your own amplified voice, you know. And I can imagine that like, because Kiteman was a guest character more or less in the prior show. And now that you're center stage, you're kind of under a microscope a bit more. Do you find yourself kind of having to be like, okay, like, how do I get into the rhythm like this again?
Starting point is 00:49:24 Like, this is going to be like for long stretches in the booth here. I used to be like, okay, play back a little bit of the kite man so I can hear the voice I was doing. But then after a while I realized like, oh, it's just my voice. I'm not like really doing. I don't have to look too hard to find kite man. Yeah, it's like, that pressure in the booth where like you see everybody else. They're like, how do I do this again? I know.
Starting point is 00:49:50 well, you feel like, well, you know, they've paid me to show up and they have, you know, a fancy studio. I should at least, you know, perform like this is somewhat arduous for me. But really, I'm just sort of being myself. So it's not, it's not too much of a veil that I'm wearing, you know. Now, I hear you. I don't like hear myself in the headphones either. Like, it's, it's one of the worst feelings in the world. because I don't feel like I sound like that.
Starting point is 00:50:24 Then you put the headphones on or somebody's like plays you back of telling your voice. You're like, is that? Is that what I sound like? Oh, God. I know. It's like being too stoned or whatever you start going in on yourself. But also, I think there's a physiological thing where like your voice is deeper in your own skull than the way other people hear it. So there's a lot of returning characters.
Starting point is 00:50:50 We get Bain back, who doesn't love Bain, Lex Luthor. And we get some new characters, too. What's like opening up the world? You know, because in Harley Quinn, we're already again, like Connemouth King and Calendar Man. How deep in the roster were you guys ready to go to fill out the world for a kite man, hell yeah? I mean, they have a long list of the DC universe that they can pull from. So I think the Rolodex is deep. I mean, I think Kite Man was already, you know, a deep cut to begin with.
Starting point is 00:51:24 So they're going in there. There was a lot of I'm revealing my lack. I'm looking at it right now. Who is Steph? She's like teen girl or something. She shows up in the pilot. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:51:41 And I'm Googling Teen Girl, Steph, which is Google's going to come a recipe. But I full disclosure, like look on Twitter and I'm like, what are people saying about this? Which is not a good idea. But people were stoked to see that character. So I think you can play those hits to, yeah, Stephanie Brown. Spoiler. Yes. Spoiler.
Starting point is 00:52:13 She's playing spoiler in the show. that's that's so funny because i didn't know i saw her in the in the you know i saw that character when we were when we had the first script but i didn't know that was a thing is that back girl yeah i i think she's spoiler in the in the comics and a lot of the yes that's so because people have been like waiting to see like an extended uh look at spoiler i know um she was in young justice for a little bit uh And so like people, I'm sure people like, oh, man. And I'll just like, yo, we putting people in here, man.
Starting point is 00:52:52 We having some fun. That's a really interesting way to look at it. People were like, oh, it's so great to be. Some of the reactions like, you know, because you can't make everybody happy. And I know there's a lot of other characters that are deserving of a fully animated show. And Kite Man is not at the top of a lot of people's lists there. so I think there's some there's some dissatisfaction
Starting point is 00:53:19 but I think that's part of the appeal too is like he is the least obvious choice for this so but yeah no people were psyched to see her so and I didn't it was interesting to learn about that you guys
Starting point is 00:53:35 are the villains right but the main villain you know is Lex Luthor and Darkside shows up not to like give any spoilers on the But how does, you know, kite man, Golden Glider and the Nudian's gang face up against that kind of level of villainry? I think what they set out to do was give like the least capable person in the DC universe the most difficult problem to solve and just set those two things on a collision course. So it won't be easy, I'll say that.
Starting point is 00:54:16 He'll have to use everything he has, which is a kite, to, you know, save the world once again. A kite and great vibes. Just an ultimate great vibes guy, kite, man. You know, sometimes the vibes are a little gnarly on him, too. Let's be honest. But he's trying. He's trying. That's what's important.
Starting point is 00:54:40 Sometimes you need somebody to just, you know, put it on every day and give it their best. You know what I mean? That's it. That's what we're all doing, I think. Exactly. And well, so before we let you go, we're obviously having a great time with the show. And Kite Man is really a character that when we were first introduced to in Harley Quinn and when we are watching it now, like, we can find the earnest and lovable parts of him in his humor, in his... you know, sometimes incompetence.
Starting point is 00:55:13 And we kind of wanted to know, like, what would you want people to take away from Kite Man that you'd like to see out in the world more? That it doesn't make a difference how small you think you are. If you surround yourself with people that love you and respect you, and you go out and do your best every day, you can save the world. If you have the right attitude and the right kite,
Starting point is 00:55:53 anything is possible. And a dad that can't be willing to give you $10 million. You got to have a dad. And a dad with $10 million. That's all you need. A great attitude, a kite, a small loan of $10 million. It's a small loan of $10 million. Just a gift, you know.
Starting point is 00:56:10 You know, yeah, that's all you need. Honestly, like, people really need to do that more often. Yeah, like keep it simple, you know, just 10 million in a kite and just positive thinking, you know. That's what it means. Yeah, we're going to let you go, man. I know you got a lot to do. But before we go, I had to ask, can we get one hell yeah for the people? Okay.
Starting point is 00:56:35 Are we recording? Yes, we are. Boof, we're locked in, we're locked in. Do you want to give me any context for the hell yeah? Oh, man. Oh, dude. So, you know, who it's been a, it's been a, it's been a, it's been a long summer of content, you know, with all the stuff coming out. And we're really excited, really excited.
Starting point is 00:56:55 We're going to go off on the, we're going to go off and enjoy the rest of our summer with some kite man, right? So we're like, yo, what are y'all enjoying the summer? We're watching, kite man. and how does how do you feel about us enjoying it and loving the show? Hell yeah. I have no problem about giving you 10 more. You know, I don't know if there are actors out there.
Starting point is 00:57:22 And then it's like, well, now imagine that like your DoorDash just came and you got an extra order of fries. Oh, yeah. There you go. It's the same one, no matter what the context is. But it's like, but it's that 10th one that we really need. That's the one. Some actors might, might.
Starting point is 00:57:38 you know, be shy from a catchphrase, hide from it. I'm leaning in. I've been waiting a long time to have a catchphrase. So I'm milking it. I'm riding that train. No, it's great, man. I mean, I say it. I try to say it the way you say it every time I talk about the show.
Starting point is 00:57:53 It's like on this podcast episode, we're doing kite man. Hell yeah. Hell yeah. I try to bring it. I try to bring it. Hell yeah. Thank you so much, man. Thank you so much, man.
Starting point is 00:58:04 Thank you, guys. I appreciate your time. thanks once again to Matt Oberg, Kite Man himself for joining us. That was really fun. Jome, I'm looking forward to the rest of the season. I really, I really, I genuinely. I can't win. It's going to be, it's going to be real fun.
Starting point is 00:58:20 But that's going to do it for us here. We got a lot more coming to you guys. We got Deadpool and Wolverine for the Midnight Boys. I will not be on that show. But that's going to be fine because we got Sean and Amanda of the big pick to join you guys. Next time on that. We may or may not. be live from Comic-Con.
Starting point is 00:58:40 We're not doing a lot. We're just going to be doing a pod. We're not going to do a pod. We're going to do a podcast. We're going to check it out. We're going to have a hotel room doing a podcast. Yes. We will not be on the main stage at Hall H.
Starting point is 00:58:51 We will not be the fantastic four that they are debuting instead of a full recast. And talk to Thrones every Sunday right after the episode ends. Be sure to check that out.
