Hello and welcome into the Ringerverse, your nexus feed for all things fandom. I am Ben Lindberg, ButtonMash host, senior editor at the Ringer, Master of Ceremonies here at Ringerverse Recommends, joined as always by my trusty Dox and Grumkin by my side. This is the April 2025 edition of Ringerverse Recommends. If you have a long memory, you may recall that April 2024 was our first of these things.
Starting point is 00:02:14 So we've made it a full year now. This is our one-year anniversary. Happy birthday to us. I guess this is the 13th edition, but still, calendar year accomplished. Thank you to all of you for making this little side project, this passion project possible. And we will keep it going as long as you keep listening and watching. And by now, you know how this works. We talk about things that we missed on the feed on the past month and that you, by extension, may have missed because we didn't talk about them. in depth. They could be books, comics, movies, video games, TV shows, audio projects, anything goes, as long as it's nerd culture adjacent and we liked it and we think that you would. And we talk a little bit about what it was and why we enjoyed it and why we think you would enjoy it, where you can find it. We get in, we get out. That's all there is to it. So we try to assemble the entire Ringiverse and House of Our Crew when we can. We're missing Mallory Rubin this month, but everyone else is here, plus some friends of the Ringervverse
Starting point is 00:03:19 swelling our ranks. You can, of course, always contact us at RingervorS Recommends at gmail.com to send in your listener nomination. We have one of those every month. And hey, if you feel so moved to write in for the one year anniversary and tell us why you've enjoyed the show, what you have discovered because of RingervaVers recommends that you wouldn't have otherwise if you've got some good stories along those lines, I'd love to hear them, and I'd love to share them potentially on next month's episode. So Ringiverse Recommends at gmail.com.
Starting point is 00:03:51 We've got a full slate for you today, and yes, I will be reprising my performance as the amateur trailer actor. By popular demands, also by necessity, because we still can't use clips for these things. I'm open to suggestions. If anyone wants to suggest some alternate method of breaking up these clips,
Starting point is 00:04:11 and introducing each one that doesn't demand me to act, which I do not do professionally. I'm all ears, but people seem to enjoy it the first time around. Hopefully it's not a, this was fun once, but that was my fill. We'll just keep it going until someone suggests something better, or we can use clips again, and we'll see how it goes. So, without further ado, let's get right to our clips and our recommendations. Grumkin's getting restless.
Starting point is 00:04:38 She wants to hear what's on tap. So let's lead off with your friend and mine, Arjuna Ramgapal. I'll be back at the end of the episode to recap the picks and provide the listener picks. Talk to you then. But right now, Arjuna leads us off. I was born on a small island in the Black Sea. Ding, dong. People say it's a dangerous place.
Starting point is 00:05:06 There are bears and wolves. And something else, something people fear is much worse. Then we hit you with the A24 logo and suddenly you're sold. What's up, Ringiverse? It's R. Jr. here with my April recommendation. I'm recommending a movie. No, it's not Sinners. It's not the Minecraft movie. It's the legend of Ochi. It is an original fantasy movie that I think is worth checking out. You know, there is a pretty simple, but touching kind of coming of age story in there, but I think you can kind of take the whole family too and enjoy.
Starting point is 00:05:49 It's rated PG, so it's not too graphic for anybody in the family unit to go and see. And yeah, there's some really cool fantasy elements within the movie that I think some people will enjoy, especially in our Ring orverse community. And the puppetry itself is pretty cool. It's something that we don't see a ton of anymore with a lot of special effects, obviously, in movies these days. But if you're a fan of E.T., if you're a fan of Star Wars, I think it's cool to kind of see that.
Starting point is 00:06:19 The Ochi creatures themselves are really cool to see, and the main Ochi creature is really, really cute as you've probably seen in the trailer. So definitely recommend kind of going to see that movie and enjoy it. You know, Willem Defoe, Emily Watson, both have pretty inspired performances. So if you're a fan of their work, it's another one to kind of go and see and check out.
Starting point is 00:06:43 So Legend of Ochi, it's in theaters now. If you've already seen sinners, a bunch of times and you're looking for something else to see, definitely recommend Legend of Ochi. Before there was memory, before there was history, there were the Leviathans, the colossal, monstrous creatures
Starting point is 00:07:01 that lumbered ashore each wet season and went wandering the plains, bringing death and panic with them. For centuries, the folk of the land lived at their whim and knew only fear and suffering. Then the people of the valley of Carnham learned the secrets of shaping flesh and root and branch. Secrets rendered from the blood of the Leviathans. They altered their bodies. They made themselves brilliant and strong.
Starting point is 00:07:29 And when they emerged so transformed from the shadows of that valley, they began to change all the world before them. What's up, Ringerverse Recommends? Steve Allman here with a recommendation for you. This time, it's a fantasy novel. It's called A Drop of Correction by Robert Jackson Bennett. It's a great Sherlock Holmesian mystery set in this wonderful fantasy city where giants and ancient beasts roam the world. This is the sequel to The Tainted Cup.
Starting point is 00:07:59 It's pretty much a, like, magical, twisty and terny type of, series that I've really loved. And the reason that I like it so much is that Robert Jackson Bennett's writing is very tactile. He's very good at describing rooms and oras that places have amongst them that actually give like really good life to a great mystery that I've loved so much. It's really, really fun. It came out this month. Check it out.
Starting point is 00:08:31 It is a drop of corruption by Robert Jackson Bennett. Hi. Internet's handsome dad, Pedro Pascal here. Just kidding. I'm never actually in the Mando Mask anymore, but I am in everything else. I made two movies that are coming out in July and another that's coming out in June. Plus, I was on SNL this year and in an AirPods ad. You may have seen me in The Last of Us this month, but I was also in a movie you may not have heard of, which came out in theaters this April 2. Joe's going to tell you about it. How do I find the time? You'll never know.
Starting point is 00:09:08 What's up Bad Babies? It's me Joanna Robinson with your April Ringiverse Recommends. I'm going to do a classic House of Ars smuggle here. I've got my own pick and then I'm going to yes and something that Steve recommended to you earlier in this episode. So my pick is a movie called Freaky Tales, which is a little anthology film that came out this month. It stars Ben Mendelsson of Andor fame. It stars Pedro Pascal of The Last of Us fame and everything else, obviously. And, and, and, and, And it is set in 1980s, Oakland, and it is a real love letter to my beloved Oakland, California. So if you love Oakland, California, if you love the Grand Lake Theater, if you love any of that, that is part of what I love about this movie. It's kind of shaggy. It's not a perfect movie. It's a little rough around the edge. It's a little funky. But it has a lot of fun, exciting, innovative stuff happening.
Starting point is 00:09:59 Just really creative and fun, fine time of the movies. Written and directed by Anna Bowden and Ryan Fleck, who did Captain Marvel and also Half Nelson. and sugar, great filmmaking duo. So, freaky tales, I really recommend. You can catch in the theater so you can rent it at home. And then to Yes, and Steve's recommendation of, if you're watching this video, I'm going to flash the cover, a drop of corruption by Robert Jackson Bennett. This is a sequel to my favorite book from last year or two years ago, whenever it came out, The Tainted Cup. And this is just, I'm sure Steve explained it really well, but this is just like my favorite fantasy world that I read in a long time.
Starting point is 00:10:38 Really, really fun mystery, really, really great characters. I love disappearing into this world. Really, really, really creative and well thought out. And so I just want to, like, chime in with Steve on a drop of corruption. So, freaky tales, if you want a fun, funky time of the movies. And freaky tales, like, weird, unexplained stuff happens. So it is genre. It's not just like 80s Oakland.
Starting point is 00:11:03 It's 80s Oakland. But weird shit happens. and a big subplot with the Golden State Warriors happens, etc., etc., etc. So, freaky tales. And then if you're a fan of fantasy worlds and you loved The Tainted Cup, get the sequel, a drop of corruption. If you haven't read The Tainted Cup, read The Tainted Cup and then read a drop of corruption. Both are really good audiobook experiences as well. And that is it for me.
Starting point is 00:11:30 I'll see you next month. Bye. This is so freaking cool. He's just so weird. Let the festivities begin. I'll protect you no matter what. Annoying little brat. I'm Yibokuragane. I'm a samurai. Yo, guys, welcome to Weeb Wednesdays.
Starting point is 00:12:02 My recommends for this week is a anime by Witt Studio or remake, actually. It's called Yaiba. It's about a small samurai boy who escapes from the jungle, or at least his father takes him as a tiger friend and vulture friend to modern Japan. And they get into shenanigans, fighting onies, demons. It is so fun. I think if you are a fan of the original Dragon Ball, even Dragon Ball Z, it'll give you that feeling.
Starting point is 00:12:37 The animation is just, it's incredible, it's electric. The team over there has done an amazing job with it. And it's one of my things, like, it's like if I'm watching the studio, The Last of Us, and or all of these different great shows, I always settle down at the end of the night with Yaiba. It's just incredible. It's on Netflix right now.
Starting point is 00:12:56 So tap in. I promise you you will find it very, very entertaining. This episode is brought to you by Spectrum Business. Starting point is 00:14:23 The pull to the light. Supreme Leader senses it. Show me again, the power of the darkness, and I will let nothing stand in our way. Show me, grandfather, and I will finish what you started in an eight-issue comic book series. Hey, it's Ben, back again with my recommendation. Would you believe that we've gone a year into the series without me making a Star Wars recommendation? Well, that streak, that drought ends today. It's true. I don't know whether it says more about me or the state of Star Wars, or the fact that we cover most major Star Wars releases on the main feed that it's taken this long. I also recommend a little show called Andor, but you probably don't need me to tell you that here.
Starting point is 00:15:12 Anyway, I'm breaking the Star Wars seal on Ring Reverse recommends to tell you about a new series called Star Wars Legacy of Vader. It's a comic book. Kerm didn't have a comic pick to make this month, so I'm stepping in with a Marvel pick. And this was written by one of my favorite Star Wars storytellers, Charles Sol, illustrated by a long time Star Wars comic creator Luke Ross. And this stars Darth Vader, but also Kylo Ren. And Sol knows these characters inside and out. He previously wrote the 2017 Darth Vader run and the 2019 The Rise of Kylo Run miniseries that explained how Kylo fell to the dark side. So as Sol said, when this series was announced, this new series is not just a combination of those two books, but also a chance to explore an extremely rich section
Starting point is 00:15:56 of the timeline that's almost entirely open, Kylo Ren's time as supreme leader of the First Order. That's what called to me here, not only the creators, but when it's set in the Star Wars timeline, this is between the Last Jedi and the Rise of Skywalker. And that is just vacant. We have not seen really any Star Wars stories told since the sequel films were actually in theaters. Barely anything has come out in terms of actually full-fledged novels or games or comic series. And so there's a lot of ground to explore and room to cover things. And it's not a mystery why that time period has mostly been left alone. I think the fans were ready to put that behind us. Also, Lucasfilm was, and they're fast forwarding now to the Starfighter film, maybe to a
Starting point is 00:16:45 Ray movie that will just sort of leave behind the smoking ruins of the sequel trilogy. Look, maybe we're still telling prequel era stories. Maybe at some point with the rose-tinted glasses when the nostalgia kicks in, we'll say, hey, those sequel films, they weren't so bad. There was a lot to like. Let's revisit them. Let's rehabilitate them. Let's tell more stories.
Starting point is 00:17:04 But that time has not yet come. And so it's nice to get this one window into that era. And it picks up right after the Battle of Crate. And in the very first scene, General Hux gets the truce. troops together on the First Order flagship and Kylo comes out with two boxes containing the two halves of Snoke and levitates them right out of the airlock, really makes a statement, a strong first impression, declares himself Supreme Leader. And then he's like, hey, Hux, first order of business, build me a throne. But also, what's going on with our military? Do we have forces?
Starting point is 00:17:37 Did Snoke have any plans for the First Order that you could tell me about? Because I kind of cut some corners on my way to becoming Supreme Leader and also cut my master in half. So any hot tips that you have might be great here. And he kind of just goes on a walkabout here. He's trying to kill the past. And he's trying to kill Darth Vader, who still has a hold on him. And so he's going to Mustafa. He's going to Tatouin. He's going to Nabu. He's playing all the hits, but he's sort of retracing the steps of Darth Vader and learning a lot about his granddad that he doesn't know. He comes across his granddad's old attendant who walks him through some of the Darth Vader lore and says, hey, you don't want to kill the past. You want to use it.
Starting point is 00:18:19 That was the source of Darth Vader's power. He channeled that rage. And that's what you should do, too. But Kylo can't measure up to the pain that Anakin experienced and he's constantly comparing himself to Anakin's upbringing and not quite measuring up. So we're getting lots of set up for this era in the Mandoverse shows the Bad Batch, etc. laying a lot of groundwork to try to explain the how in somehow Palpatine returned. But this is a rare view of what. what was actually happening in this year between TLJ and the Rise of Skywalker. Kailos killed his dad. He's almost killed his mom.
Starting point is 00:18:52 He's cut his master in half. He's fought a forced projection of his uncle. He force flirts with Ray. So he's kind of going through it. And he's also putting the galaxy through it. And here we see what is actually going on in his head. So this series started in February. The first three issues are out.
Starting point is 00:19:08 Five more are on the way. And if you're in a prequel frame of mind, an Anakin Skywalker frame of mind. Maybe you just went to see the Revenge of the Sith re-release in theaters or you're planning to. We got much more Vader where that comes from. So check out Star Wars Legacy of Vader. We're flying with a dinosaur on board.
Starting point is 00:19:46 That bodes well. Watch out. Dum, dum, dum. Dum. What is up, Ring or Verse fans? It's me, Jomey. Back with another Ring of Verse recommends. And this will shock you.
Starting point is 00:20:06 But for this month, I am recommending Jurassic World Chaos Theory Season 3. Let me tell you something. This show continues to astound. I've set this multiple times, but Jurassic World Chaos Theory is the best Jurassic World content we've gotten in the 21st century. It is surprising. It is electric.
Starting point is 00:20:30 And they're bringing back the stuff I love about this show, which is me and the dinosaurs. It's cool. But again, the interpersonal relationships are these characters. Ooh! Again, I'm not going to spoil it for you, but it pops off. I'm team for Dula all the way. Lock in on Jurassic World. Chaos Theory Season 3.
Starting point is 00:20:52 Because guess what? Jurassic World Rebirth is right down the line. Does it tie in? Are there Easter eggs? Who knows? But I'm going to find out because I like watching real cinema. If you like watching real cinema like I do,
Starting point is 00:21:08 tap into Jurassic World Season 3. Jurassic World Chaos Theory Season 3. Lock it in. I'll see you guys next time. Futuristic setting. We're going clubbing. The beat is popping. Oonce, Oonts, Oonts!
Starting point is 00:21:21 Four years ago, a man named Dr. Skinner developed a miracle painkiller known as Hopna. As a matter of fact, I did not develop Hopna to act as a mere painkiller. And as it turned out, Hopna was a grand trap that he set upon us all. Three years after ingestion, Hopna will mutate, killing all those who have taken it. But you should know that I currently have the cure. You have 30 days. So unless you find me within that time, Outs, oonts, oonts! Hope will be lost.
Starting point is 00:21:50 For ever. Hey, this is Dan Chin. And this month, I'm recommending Lazarus, the new anime series from the legendary Shinichiro Watanabe, who's probably best known for creating Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champleu. Lazarus can be seen on Max or Adult Swim. This series is set in the not too distant future of 2052. In three years before our story begins, this world-renowned neuroscientist has created a miracle drug called Hapna that can essentially relieve its user of any pain.
Starting point is 00:22:16 It's a revolutionary breakthrough, not just for its effectiveness, but for its accessibility, but the drug being cheap enough that just about anyone can get their hands on it. And supposedly, there are no side effects. Of course, it's all too good to be true. Right after the release of this drug, the scientists behind it disappeared from the public eye, and now he's returned three years later to announce that this drug has come with a catch, has a lethal side effect that's going to kick in in 30 days for anybody who's used it, which is pretty much all of humanity by now.
Starting point is 00:22:43 Only he has the cure, and so a special task force called Lazarus has been assembled to track him down to get this cure and save the way. world. Lazarus has a great hook that immediately pulls you into its story and it sticks. And there are some very fun collaborations in play here, as Watanabe has teamed up with Chad Stahelsky, the director of the John Wick movies for the show's action sequences, along with the score from Comasi Washington, Bonobo, and Floating Points. Watanabe has spoken to the media about how he doesn't want people to compare Lazarus to
Starting point is 00:23:12 Cowboy Bebop too much, to enjoy each show equally. But frankly, the similarities are uneniable, and that's not such a bad thing. The show's look, protagonist, and vibe are very reminiscent of Cowboy Bebop, particularly with Washington's jazz influence on the score. Much like Yolka Canoe and the Seabelt had a major impact on Cowboy Bebop success, the music here is fantastic and plays a big role in the show. Even still, in a lot of ways, this show is still fresh and stands on its own. And it's definitely worth checking out.
Starting point is 00:23:40 If I attempt the accents in this trailer, I could get canceled. So instead, South of Midnight, we're going to let it all hang. Down, south of midnight, we're going to chug-lug and shout. We're going to stimulate some action. We're going to get some satisfaction. We're going to find out what it's all about. South of midnight, we're going to let it all hang down.
Starting point is 00:24:12 What's up, guys, it's Van. My Ring universe recommends for the month of April is a game that I actually played for the Budmash podcast. It's called South of Midnight, and I actually loved it. I've been up to my eyeballs in college football 25. Nothing could make me get off the college football 25 game except for South of Midnight. It uses the iconography of the South cultural influences from the South, something very close to my heart, to tell a really multi-layered story that is fantastic once you let yourself.
Starting point is 00:24:49 submit to it. It's got pretty good action in it. It's very intuitive to play, and it's available on all platforms right now. I'm supposed to play it for a couple of hours. I think I'm maybe like four hours into it right now. Young black woman lead using all the stuff, big catfish. It's a lot of stuff. All kinds of stuff is happening in the game, and it takes place in the land it looks remarkably like my home state of Louisiana. So if you guys want a video game that gives you that feel like you're on a mystical adventure with characters that you might know and understand South to Midnight, it is your game. That's my Ring and Verse recommends for the month of April.
Starting point is 00:25:34 Dum, dum, dum, the world is changing. Dum, dum, horse riding, horse riding, are tide sweeping us along against our control. Shooting balls of flame, shooting balls of flame, fireballs. Fireball. Dund da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da. We cannot stand behind these walls and pretend we still have control. Slash! Slash!
Starting point is 00:25:56 This tower is destroying itself from the inside out. Shooting stuff, shooting stuff! If the white tower does not bend the knee to Randall Thor, he will lose the last battle. There's not enough ale in the world to deal with this. Ha ha ha ha. All right, it's Ben and Grumkin back again to take you the rest of the way. Grum's getting sleepy, so I got to wrap things up, but not before I recap the picks. And I can't recap the picks until I deliver the last of them, which in Ringaverse Recommend's
Starting point is 00:26:30 tradition, was submitted via email to Ringaverse Recommends at gmail.com by a Ringervverse listener, or in this case, two Ringervorverse listeners who independently submitted the same thing. I'll read the short version first. This is from listener Caitlin Timcoe, who said, again, short and sweet, Wheel of Time, Season 3, it's great, it's fandom, it's fantasy, it's badass women, why aren't we talking more about it? The same sentiment expressed by listener Daniel Bissera, who wrote in to say essentially the same thing, but in more words, Wheel of Time, Season 3 is my submission for this month and also for most improved show of 2025.
Starting point is 00:27:11 It wrapped up this month. It's an adaptation of a special. sprawling high-fantasy epic where the world is recovering from a cataclysmic war against a cosmic evil, the war was won by the dragon, a powerful magic user and his companions. But in the process, the source of magic energy he drew on was cursed. So any man who used it would eventually go mad. So you end up with a lot of inverted gender dynamics when compared to our world. And the story begins with the rebirth of the dragon and a quest for Moraine, played by Roseman Pike, to find and help them. That's the start of season one.
Starting point is 00:27:45 I know House of Art covered the premiere, and a lot of people fell off the wagon during rough season one, but I'm here to tell you, it's all worth giving it another try and checking it out. Season two was a big improvement, and this season adapts the best book in the series, in my opinion. Episode four in particular is one of the best hours of fantasy TV since mid-run Game of Thrones. Quite a comp. Rosemond Pike continues to cook as the enigmatic moraine, and they introduce some new villains this season that are a perfect balance of imposing obstacles for our heroes,
Starting point is 00:28:16 but also fully realized characters. The young main characters are also coming into their own. Donald Flynn's Matt is a particular joy. Check it out. P.S. for Jomey. Don't forget, the Wheel of Time showrunner Rafe Judkins wrote on Agents of Shield, and it has that similar vibe with a great ensemble cast. Thank you, Caitlin. Thank you, Daniel.
Starting point is 00:28:37 Probably speaking for many Ringiverse listeners. You can find Prime Video is where you go. for Wheel of Time, seasons one through three, three just wrapped up, middle of this month. And I know a lot of people want that to be covered on the Ringiverse. Maybe at some point it will be. I was in the same vote as Daniel just laid out there. I watched season one. I actually haven't read the full book series somehow that just slipped by me.
Starting point is 00:29:02 Those many, many books. I think partly because I was so daunted by the prospect of reading that many books. So I read book one in preparation for season one, enjoyed the book. The season was okay. It wasn't terrible, but it didn't really make me want to watch much more. And so when it came back and long breaks between seasons, I just did not get back into it.
Starting point is 00:29:25 And I think a lot of people were in that same boat. And not to speak for anyone else at the Ring of Universe or House of R. There are just many other things that kind of command our attention. And when there wasn't that much buzz about it, when we weren't really plugged into the first season, we just kind of tapped out, I suppose. And I've heard great things. I know the reviews, both critic reviews and user reviews, have improved by the season. Season two was better. Season three, rave reviews in general. And so I do feel like I'm missing out now and that we're
Starting point is 00:29:55 missing out on covering this show. And hopefully at some point we can catch up. It is not an unpopular series. Obviously, there's a sizable audience that watches it. It's a little less buzzy than a lot of fantasy epics that we do discuss. But maybe at some point, I know that there are people who are keeping that flame alive for Wheel of Time, and hopefully we can get back into it at some point if, of course, they make more. So thank you very much for the suggestion, for the nomination. Again, Ringiverse Recommends at gmail.com. I will recap all of the picks that we have just treated you to here. We started off with Arjuna Ramgapal, who led off with the legend of Ochi in theaters now. Steve Allman kept the train rolling with a fantasy mystery novel by Robert Jackson
Starting point is 00:30:41 Bennett. That would normally be Joanna Robinson's province, and she did second that recommendation, but she also contributed her own freaky tales, another movie that may also be in a multiplex near you and is available via video on demand. Charles Holmes on Weeb Corner this month, he said it, not me. Jaiba, Samurai Legend on Netflix. From me, of course, Star Wars Legacy of Vader, a comic from Marvel. From Jomea Denneron, Jurassic Park, Chaos Theory, season three on Netflix. I think that's the second time Jomey has recommended this series on this podcast, but it's the third season that's come out since we started, Ringherverse Recommend.
Starting point is 00:31:20 So he's actually shown some restraint, not recommending it three times. From Daniel Chin, Lazarus on Adult Swim and Max and Hulu. From Van Lathen, south of midnight on Windows Xbox series S-slash-X and Game Pass. And of course, we did, as Van mentioned, cover South of Midnight on Ringaverse, on Button Mash, so you can go check that out. We had a longer discussion. Van, me, Jessica Clemens. I think when that episode was posted, it said it was five hours long. So a lot of people noped out of there, but it wasn't actually, it was regular length.
Starting point is 00:31:53 So if you missed it, go back and check it out. We had a good discussion about South of Midnight and much more. That was just one of three segments on that episode. And finally, from listeners, Caitlin Timco. and Daniel Becerra, The Wheel of Time, Season 3 on Prime Video. Lots of great stuff coming, obviously, on both of our feeds. You know the drill. We've got Andor.
Starting point is 00:32:15 We've got The Last of Us, three different shows on The Last of Us, including Buttonmash. We also have Thunderbolts coverage coming up and much, much more. So you may not have even needed many recommendations this month because we've got our hands full. But that's all the more reason to do this series and make sure that you don't sleep. on some things that might slip by you otherwise. So again, thanks so much for helping us make it to a year. Thank you to Steve Allman for producing this episode. Thank you to Arjuno Ramgapal for helping make this series happen and helping make it
