That's right. It's finally time for the Avatar draft. And with that out of the way, can we please roll the spoiler warning because we will be discussing everything from every season of Avatar, The Last Airbender, and the Legend of Cora. Don't yell at us.

Steve, roll it. We're getting ready to talk about anime. You're listening to a reaction podcast. The spoilers are coming. Is Everture the Last Airbender in anime? I don't think it's it. I don't think it technically is, unfortunately.

But that was funny. But it's such a good one. It's so good. It is Michael Be Jordan saying anime. So, yeah. Also, guys, I feel like the Midnight Boys are very honored to have Joanna here because she has been in the podcasting minds for like 48 hours straight. But she was just like, nah, if y'all are doing an avatar draft,

I'll add some extra time in the mining fields. How are you feeling, Joe? Are you as excited as we are? Oh, I'm thrilled. Before we started recording, I told you that when I saw you were doing this without me, I got jealous and sad. And then I was just like, so, you know, maybe if I, like, if you want me to, like, be there, I could, please invite me.

He's like, do you want Joe to be on this episode? I'm like, absolutely, yes. let's do it. It's going to be so fun. Also, really quickly, people are probably like, why is it Van doing the Avatar draft? Well, Van's not a thing to have two.

Two very valid reasons. One on vacation, two. He likes Star Wars rebels better than Avatar. So we're just like, if there's any time to do the Avatar draft, it is when Van is in Santorini Greece

crushing grapes with his feet. I think that's what he told us he was doing. Which sounds just as just as good as an Avatar draft, honestly. I don't practice. Santorini. Wow. Wow. What a sublime record.

Goodness gracious. So yeah, like before we talk about all of our undying love for Avatar, let's, for people who might be like, need a refresher. Avatar, the last Airbender is created by Michael Dante Di Martino and Brian Kinezkyo.

It premieres in February 2005 on Nickelodeon. It follows the story of Eng, a young airbender and Avatar tasked with bringing harmony to a world full of individuals who can Ben, Four Elements, Air, Water, Fire, and Earth. It ran for three seasons, and in 2012, got a spinoff show called The Legend of Cora, which followed the life of the next Avatar.

And my first question for you, Joe, is, why do you feel like Avatar has endured? Because I remember watching it in real time on Nickelodeon. And it's not like Nickelodeon treated Avatar as if it was their premier programming. I even think the later seasons of the last Airbender got moved to like Fridays or Saturdays, like a death time slot. Legend of Cora,

you never knew if you were going to get another season. But these two series are so popular now. The disrespect for Cora is incredible because at one point they just moved it to their app essentially like the final season. It was just like, I was podcasting about at the time. I had to figure out how to watch it

on the Nickelodeon app. I saw so many toy commercials covering the last season of Cora. Anyway, why is it endured? I think there's something really elemental. First of all, it only grew and grew and grew. I think when it hit Netflix, not even like this most recent time,

but the first time it hit Netflix, there was a big boom and interest in Avatar. And then when it hit Netflix the second time, which coincided with our lovely COVID pandemic lockdown, there was just a whole new general. of people who found it, who were watching for the first time. Avatar, Cora, TikTok was popping off. It was huge.

And so that's not really answer your question. Why? That's sort of how. Why? I think there's just so much, there's a lot of, like, joy and sweetness and community and also some life lessons and also some interesting, like, sort of religious concepts seated in in a way that is sort of surprisingly mature. and then Cora gets like deeply mature, I think.

And so it's a show that aged with his audience. It has a lot to say. And it's beautiful, absolutely beautiful. Beautiful. Brings me to tears. And Jomi, I'm so interested in when you got into Avatar because I feel like you were the perfect age to have seen it the first time around. Did you like actually watch it live on Nickelodeon as it was premiered?

I saw the last season live. And I wrote about this actually. Those are the first thing I ever wrote for The Ringer.com. What a great website about what avatar like means. And part of it is just how, you know, the magic and the realism. I know those two words don't, it doesn't sound like they make sense together. But in this world, it does. You know, there's something that grounds it, despite the fact that all these kids are, you know, bending elements.

You know, the seriousness of it, but also the, the, levity it provides, there's just such a great balance in that series that no matter where you are or, you know, how far away you've gotten from the start of the series, you can always come back and just jump right into that world. It's truly incredible. And Steve, were you like me? I was probably too old to be watching Avatar, but I remember the first episode and I thought it was the most amazing thing ever. Were you like Avatar head from the beginning? I was introduced to Avatar from a friend in college. College, really?

Yes, yeah, from in college. Because, like, there was, like, it was, there was rumors that there was going to be a spinoff show of Avatar. And, like, everybody was talking about the fact that, like, this show was amazing, and I had never even really seen it. And it was kind of on the lips of everybody that I didn't, uh, really get a chance to actually watch it. And then by the time I had finished that first, the last Airbender, I was fully in on

whatever Cora was going to be. I was absolutely excited. I thought that this was one of the best, like, story. of collected fiction for like, this is like our generation's Lord of the Rings, this is our generation Star Wars, like, it's a perfect like adventure for not only kids, but like

a canon that is so rich and deep that I've always wanted to dive back into. Even doing this draft, I'm like, I need to rewatch this show now. And I mean, I've rewatched both series over the pandemic and I just want to say like, this is a Cora friendly podcast. I always hated how much hate Cora got.

I think it's just such a good spinoff. I think it's probably more uneven than the airbender is. But in terms of how emotional it gets and kind of the very fraught topics about what it means to be a young woman, a leader, what is it, your sexuality, all of these things. I love Cora. But speaking of spinoffs, let's be real. How are you guys feeling about the future of Avatar? Like, let's rank from a height meter.

Netflix has a live action show. coming out that the two creators departed. Then we have Avatar Studios and the next animated movie is going to be about Team Avatar and there's rumors we're getting Kyoshi and Korah movies. If we could rank this in terms of like Most Hype to Lease Hype, where are we going?

I think most hype for me is obviously Team Ang movie overall number one is for me personally. Joe, what about you? So the Kyoshi movies was to come first and then they swapped out the like sort of adult and gang movie to replace it. I think maybe to be in,

maybe to start on a more familiar territory or maybe to be in closer competition with this live action Netflix show, which by the way is at the bottom of my ranking because if Brian and Michael left, then I'm like, I'm still interested, but and we've been burned by live action avatar before.

But, so Kyoshi's the top of my list. And I saw, I saw, someone was pissed off that the projects got swapped and they're like, what I don't want to watch is Taft Befong become a cop. So

you can leave the adult gang one out of it. So, but I am still interested in what's going on with them. So I would say for me, it's Kyoshi adult ang gang, Cora, and then live action avatar is my ranking.

Show me where you land in my friend. I got to stick with Seeing the gang again, like that, you know, that's something you never thought I would get a chance to do. So, you know, I was excited for Kiyoshi, but I got to see Team Avatar. That's one. Kiyoshi 2, Kora 3. I love Kora. But I've always been interested in seeing Kiyoshi, like, on screen, like, for real, for real.

And then not ranked, not on my ranking is the Netflix live action. Yeah, it's, it's bottom last. It's just, like, as soon as they were like, Breaks not involved anymore. I was like, uh-oh. We're going to have problems. I'm going to be honest. If they mess up two live action Avatar series,

it's just, I'm going to be like, guys, I'm going to be in front of the Netflix headquarters with a sign and, and some yelling. It's going to be just, how dare you?

How dare you? Steve, where are you, are, is your list similar? Mine's exactly the same as Joanna's. Kiyoshi's well at the top of the list. I won't give away much of,

it's any stratagems for the draft. but like I certainly think that like a great look into the Earth Nations politics come that time of the Avatar canon. I think that's perfect. I think Kyoshi is like the best. So yeah, I definitely want to see the Kyoshi movement first. But like the Netflix outing sounds like a lot of possible trouble. So I think we can we can short leash on that. We'll be positive.

We'll be positive, but. It's surprising to me, like, you know, Charles, you likening it to Lord of the Rings. It does feel that rich. Like, the lore feels that rich of this show. The world feels so huge, so many possibilities for different kinds of adventures in this world. The way that this massive IP with so much goodwill behind it has been fumbled by Nickelodeon by Netflix is wild to me. And so I'm so glad that it's, it really could feel like Nickelodeon's game of of Thrones. And I'm not trying to be hyperbolic because like it's that big and spreading. And like,

you could do so much with this. And the fact that we are still like just feasting for something, it's, it's tough. Right. So the fact that Brian and Mike have like started their own studio is so encouraging to me because it's like they have, they're no longer being sort of like buffeted by the winds of these other creators. So I'm actually not clear on what their full control. the rights are in terms of like how much Nickelodeon still needs to be cut in on this thing that they created for Nickelodeon. But I'm hopeful that in control of it, we'll see more and better from them. I'm so excited. A new era. Before we get into the draft, I have to ask you guys an important question. Who is everybody on the ringerverse in terms of their avatar character?

Character? Everybody? So let's say, Midnight Boys, House of R. I have Joanna. I have Joanna already. Oh, no. To me, you are pre-coptoff. Oh, thank you. What a massive compliment. Jesus. Just because, like, it's like you're so nice, but also, like, sometimes we'll be on a pod and you'll have such, like, the most well-said biting critique, like, Toff out of nowhere.

And I'm like, you'll just have, like, you'll just say something. I'm just like, critic Joanna jumped out. That to me is very much tough. Like, she'll say something in the. the middle of an episode. I'm like, this is why you're the best. For the, okay, in slight defense, not to, not to pull too hard. I just love Toff. But like, what if Toff was like a commissioner Gordon type figure? Just like a good cop and a bad, in a bad, there are no good cops. No, no good cops, Steve. She invented the cops.

That's the white. Oh, no, I forgot about that. She invented the con. Honestly, I'm so glad VAD is not on this episode because he would be, it would be really bad. That's wild, Steve. I this is this is not fair and we'll come up with a better one but like my first instincts for for my beloved Mallory are those like Earth Kingdom girls who are like

screaming over Ang and like yeah the ultimate passionate fans oh my god I have one for I have one for Jomey to me Jomi is Saka because as much as he tries to act

He doesn't have it with the ladies. You know, Saka, we're getting down. Like, Saka be running through all these kingdoms. The girls are like, yo, Saka. Come on this podcast and we lie. I love Saka. That's nuts. You don't like Saka?

It's time for the drafts. I'm going to go over the rules really quick. we're going to go in snake order, meaning the first three players have one pick, the last player gets two, we go back up in reverse order until we're back to the first player who gets two picks,

and we repeat that process until the draft is done. The Avatar draft also is not about constructing the most powerful team, all right? We are not, this isn't that draft order is chosen at random, and I'm introducing a new rule because when Van is away,

the kids play, Steve, you're no longer last, okay? You're no longer last, okay? last. The Steve rule is being fucking thrown in the garbage, okay? I would just like to say that Steve imposed that rule on himself. Like, we did it for Black History Month because that made sense.

And afterwards, Steve was just like, I'll go last. We were like, cool. Sounds good. I'm abolishing the Steve's rule. I've talked to the drafting commission. They're all like, give Steve a fighting chance. So we're giving Steve a fighting chance this round. Please, please, please. Do not get the Jury LaForge Award this time.

That's fine. I beg of you. What I will say is that like, I hope this random number generator just puts me last so that'll just be the same order. And then also, last rule, we have to talk about it. Let's be clear. What does Wildcard stipulate for this episode?

Is Wildcard any character that we want? Anything. I think you could put another, like a double of another category you have. Like if you feel like you need to. Because last time we drafted, everybody's like Wildcard for,

should be for picks that are like, not the popular picks. I think Wildcard should stand for any single character who has not already been picked on the board. Yeah, anything you want. Yes, anything that we want. There's so many characters

and fun things to put in this show that we love that I want to make the wild card like literally anything that we want to give something that we love a moment of shine. Hell yeah. In this iteration of the draft, Wildcard should stand for anything because, hey, there are a lot of characters.

It's a lot of, you know, fun people that we love. And so I'm excited to see what comes out. So yeah, wild cards should be for anybody. All right. Yo, Steve, roll it. Let's use going for second, third, fourth. All right. So I'm going to be implementing a random number generator given all of our assigned numbers. Charles will be one. Joanna will be two. I will be three. Jome will be four. And with a roll of the dice, number three, I'm first. Oh, Steve. I'm serious. Wow. Okay. Great. Steve is like, wow, what a crazy random happen. What are the odds?

The guy picking the draft first. Wow. That's nuts. This would not stand in fantasy football. This would not slide. This is a Dominion random number generator. We don't know how many hands is touched. All right.

And number two is Joanna. Oh, never mind. This is the perfect system. Perfect system. I support it entirely. And then with that, that'll be number one with Charles.

And then Jomi will be going last. But then he'll get the double pick. Got it. All right. So, wow. first. Oh my gosh. Steve, this is,

Avatar here first. Like, this has got to be the first, the last, the everything. I know I stated a bit of favoritism for a certain Avatar, but I think once we're here, we got to start with the one that it's all here about.

It's Avatar Ang. Boom! What a basic ass-pick, Steve. Steve, come on, you had so much power. No, it's too late. It's too late. I like, I like, I like. But you had so much power, Steve.

Come on, bro. No, I see the vision. No, I see the vision. You're just pointing the fans. No, no, no, no. Stay with the Steve. No, stay by your laurels, Steve. That's what I am.

Isn't the point of winning? Maybe what if the actual pick that I wanted was, A. I don't think that's true because you started your sentence with. Well, this isn't what I wanted to pick originally. the detective mystery episode with Kyoshi where Kyoshi's like, oh yeah, I killed him. Yeah. Now, correct me if I'm wrong. Kiyoshi, she wasn't a wartime avatar,

but she was like, highly diplomatic when it came to her duties as avatar. Like, she fucking got shit done. By diplomatic, you mean she killed a lot of people? I don't know.

Kiyoshi's a fucking badass. I love her. Steve, I'm sorry that you got mocked mercilessile for picking the literal tool. For picking the fucking main character. All I'm saying is that's not what you wanted to do though. That's not what you want to do in your heart.

Yeah, because here's the thing. I agree with, I agree with Jomey. Like, Steve, this was your moment to shine. And you buckle to popular opinion. And you buckled. You got shook. I really just wanted to pick A.

Hell yeah. And by my growth you mean moving away from a terrible hair style to a good hair stuff. I love Zuka. When we started, when we started this pod or before the pod, I said I would get takes off. You know, I would be engaged. Like, I was really excited.

not only was that a terrible pick Zucco is by far the worst firebender that we spend the most time I didn't think that Jomi would be coming off with the hater energy this episode Jomey's Jomey sitting on the back the ass end of the draft on the turn so he has nothing to do bunch of ships right now I think this is entirely

Zucco I'm not picking Zucco let's be clear Zucco is one of the best written characters on that show I didn't say, did I not, did I say that? That's not what I said. That's not what I said. This is not a draft about who's the most powerful. I'm not worried about powerful.

I'm just saying, if you watch the show, he is by far and away, like one of the, like, I think Zhao's probably worse because he beats Zhao and Agni Kai. But with all the firebenders who stay, we hang around with for a majority of the series, Zuko's one of the worst. It's nuts. Yeah, but we're talking growth factor here.

We're talking good. What are you talking to What are you? What do you mean worse? He lightning bends. Yeah. Not, not really. What are you talking about?

Think about it. Think about it. I'm going to make, here's, here's what we're going to, I'm going to make my pick. Because you're talking, Zuko,

end of Avatar has gone through all of his, like, evolution. Teach his fucking A. And he gets, he gets packed up by Azula multiple times. Multiple times.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. she fucking packs up the avatar. So like we can't, like, come on, bro. That's a tough metric here. That's what I'm saying. The only person that could defeat Azula is Azula. And she did it. And she did that.

Yes. Did that shit to herself. She did do that. At the, like when we look back at it, Iro is special. Ozai special. Zula, super special. Zucco,

he gets, he gets a head to him. But once again, you're acting like this draft is about like versus who is the most powerful. I'm not. I didn't say that.
