Starting point is 00:02:48 be joining us today. I want to send a big get well to Van Lathen. Okay. He's feeling a little bit under the weather. But my man's been working hard behind the scenes. Okay. So he deserves a rest. So everybody send your thoughts of prayers out to Van to make a speedy recovery. But we are the House of Midnight. And we are back to talk about the boys season three episode five. Joe, are you excited? Oh my God. First of all, that was the most delightful chaotic intro I've ever experienced. I was trying to do van. I didn't go well.
Starting point is 00:03:23 No, it was great. I love the energy. I love that I got a nickname, which just like thrills me to know it. The great insider, you know? I love it. Every single time we want to know something. You already like, you plugged in.
Starting point is 00:03:35 Thanks. Thanks, Charles. Yeah, no, I'm thrilled. What a incredible episode of television. What a joyful way. We're recording this on a Friday afternoon. What a way to spend the end of my week talking to you about incredible episode of a series that we love.
Starting point is 00:03:48 I could not agree more, but, guys, you know what time it is. It's time for. Bro. Okay, baby reminders! All right. Before we begin on Wednesday, the Midnight Boys will return to react to the season finale of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Then Thursday, Van will be joining Joanna for a look at the third episode of Miss Marvel. Friday, Joanna and Mal will return to give you their deep dive on the season finale of Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Starting point is 00:04:17 then Sunday, Stephen Jomey will be back with Mid- Edition to talk about Umbrella Academy season three and then next Monday
Starting point is 00:04:23 the three of us will return to discuss the sixth episode of the boys season three. Let's just say this really quick.
Starting point is 00:04:30 I'm saying this because Van is not feeling that well but I don't think people really realize it the ring of verse we're working hard
Starting point is 00:04:37 over here. Reading through everything that we have that's like the first time I've seen it right now. I know. And it kind of like gave me a pause
Starting point is 00:04:44 like I'm just like how are we going to get all of this done? We've really been working on. And I forgot for a second. As I said, we're recording this on Friday. I forgot for a second. This is coming out Monday.
Starting point is 00:04:52 I was like, wait, what about the Mid-Edition doing late? I was like, there's even more on top of that. Yeah, there's a lot going on. We're here. We're covering all of it. We're crushing it, if I do say so myself. Yeah. Also, on the van front, if you guys want to, you can send thoughts and prayers, as Charles said.
Starting point is 00:05:10 But also, if you want to said Revenge of the Sith memes to Van, I think that'll, like, boost his mana faster than anything else. No, fuck all that, because he used to having some wild Revenge of the Sith takes. I was just not going to let him get them off. Hotter than the lava on Mustafa Mustafar. Fans Revenge of the Sith takes.
Starting point is 00:05:31 You know what time it is, Joe. Do you know what time it is? Spoiler warning? This is time in the podcast where we need to give a spoiler warning, even though you're coming for a show where we're doing instant reactions. All right? So, Kerm, can you please?
Starting point is 00:05:44 We're getting ready to talk about the boys You're listening to a reaction podcast The spoilers are coming I would mean to ask Who is that who says the boys on that spoiler warning I have no idea Oh it's the deep it's the deep It's the deep okay
Starting point is 00:06:09 For a second I thought it was Steve Like with a reverb on his voice I was like did Steve just record the boys into a microphone. It's the deep. Thanks, Chrome. Yo, but Joe, now that the spoiler warnings
Starting point is 00:06:24 are out of the way, now that I'm done, I will no longer be doing a van impression. Vane is one of one. Joe, what did you think of this episode of the boys? How are you feeling?
Starting point is 00:06:34 Absolutely loved it over the moon for it. I'm a huge musicals fan personally, so the musical number really, really, really works for me. I thought it was incredible. What do you think? Oh.
Starting point is 00:06:46 I thought that this episode was near perfect and then there's a moment that a giant turd is put on it but I will talk about the perfect parts of the episode okay and then but I want to hear about I mean this is the week of Charles
Starting point is 00:07:00 being positive about things if we're carrying over from last week into this week Charles positivity is on the trend everyone's talking about it everyone's excited about it but I also I need
Starting point is 00:07:12 I need a golf of the Charles Hater Aid like a cave It's a refreshing gulp in a sea of positivity. Oh, I will say that, like, we're still going to be positive because I love this episode. I think what the boys is doing this season is some of the most enthralling storylines that they've had throughout their entire run. I continue the main storyline with Butcher, Soldier Boy, and Homelander is just so fascinating how they are really playing Homelander. and butcher against each other
Starting point is 00:07:47 and kind of showing the audience that these two men are exactly the same person and showing how, yeah, everything that they touch turns to shit and you're learning so much about this world. And the thing that I don't think we touch upon enough is how good the boys is at world building. Like every single time they introduce a new part of this world, it's there for a reason.
Starting point is 00:08:14 It makes you think. So, like, Soldier Boy, when he comes out of the, when he comes to New York, that was such like, oh, yeah, this is supposed to be our Captain America analog. And instead of, like, Steve waking up, you know, and running through New York and just being like, oh, yeah, there's black people walking around and there's like, all this other different shit and, like, gay marriage is legal. Like, what really happened is Soldier Boy being like, what the fuck is, what happened to my country? and that's what I love about the boys. Yeah, it was the interracial gay couple that like prompted the what the fuck from him. But also, I think also in that scene, the mural of the mural of Homelander and the bus ad, like, that was the question last week is like, does Soldier Boy care at all, give a shit about
Starting point is 00:09:05 Homelander? Are his interests align with Butcher? We find out like more about that as the episode goes on. But like, there is this thing where he's like, who the, who the first? fuck is this new guy? Like, who is this on all the billboards? What, you know? I'm very, I am very scared as, um, yeah, soldier boy.
Starting point is 00:09:26 I'm just like, ooh, God, uh, this is going to be another ticking time bomb. But before we get into kind of like the episode and everything, I want to talk to Jomey. Yo, Jomey, how are you feeling about this, uh, this episode five of the boys? I loved it. I know I say that a lot, but I really, really, really enjoyed this episode of television. I'm interested to see what the part was that you felt went off the rails. So I thought throughout the episode, I was like, I'm rocking with this. This is the best show out right now.
Starting point is 00:09:54 I'm enjoying it. Let's go. Jomey's a little bit more positive than usual lately because for the viewers at home that can't see Jomey, he's rocking his Lakers. His Lakers shirt, the Celtics pack is in the air. He's feeling really, really good about himself right now. So you should see the smile on my head, Jomey's face. Living the best life, baby. So before we get to Soldier Boy,
Starting point is 00:10:18 Joe, I want to talk to you about... The film powder? Yeah, actually, let's get that out of the way. Up top. For those that didn't listen last week, you and Van were telling me about powder. And then we learned some stuff that we did not know back then.
Starting point is 00:10:33 And Joe asked something to say. Yeah, two quick items. Number one, we talked for a long time about powder. We did not know that the director of powder is like an absolute reprehensible creep. So do not pay to rent powder in case any of that money goes to that guy. Like, just don't do that. So we did not know.
Starting point is 00:10:54 And I regret that we put that out there. And the number two, I got a lot of tweets about this for some reason. When we talked about the Taco Bowls that the Deep put out and all or that the homelitor put out when Supersonic came to the meeting, a bunch of people were really stressed that we didn't point out that that was something that Trump literally did. So there you go. That's something that Trump literally did. The boys cannot write a joke that Trump did not already do it all seriousness.
Starting point is 00:11:19 So there you go. Here's a thing I think that listeners just need to realize on the Taco Bowl front that our minds are fried. You ask me to sum up everything that happened during the Trump presidency. I can't. It's just like it's like a black hole in my mind. Like it's just like it's a safe. Like for my own, for my own safety, I've just blacked it out. If I can only hold on to one, like, egregious Trump, like, junk food moment.
Starting point is 00:11:46 For me, it was that, remember that photo of him in front of, like, all the Big Macs? Like, he had, like, just ordered a bunch of Mickey D's or whatever. Why would you do this? Why would you? What was happening? Anyway. Well, while we're here, because I don't want to stay in Trump Corner, but I actually do want to bring it up because it is, it does connect to this episode. The start of this episode, to me, we were talking last week about.
Starting point is 00:12:09 how we kind of knew Stan Edgar once he called Homelander bad product and the way he was kind of smiling like I didn't really lose. I was wondering when in the season the thing would happen that we were predicting where it's like Homelander is going to be in over his head. He does not know what he's doing. He does not know how to run a business that is that is as big as Vought. Yeah. And immediately in this episode, we see Homelander at, at a board meeting with Vought. And when they started talking to Homelander, I literally got flashbacks before I was a journalist. I went to business school. No, did you?
Starting point is 00:12:48 For four years? Yeah. I was terrible. Like, I felt like Homelander in that moment where I was the dumbest motherfucker in almost every single class. And when, like, Homelander gets like really mad because he's not, he doesn't understand what's going on. I'm like, been there, homie. Been there. Did either of you take any business classes?
Starting point is 00:13:11 Dog, I got an MBA. Wait for, show me. Really? Yes. I went back to school and I got my MBA when I was 21. Listen, when she said, I did the, when she said, I did the, I did the, the, the Leo decaprio meme. I was like, I know that. I know that.
Starting point is 00:13:32 You know, earnings before, what is it? itemization, taxation, depreciation, and emiridization. Wow. I was like, hey. Wow. I know that. I'm tapped in.
Starting point is 00:13:45 Do I use my business degree today? You just did. Absolutely not. Did it? I'm going to, where did you go to get your MBA? I went to CSC said Marco. Shout out to my cougars out there. All right.
Starting point is 00:13:58 I need y'all to knock off like 20% off them student loans. Okay. He's giving y'all free press, okay? One of the biggest podcast ever. So, shout out. The other quote, that bad product speech, part of what he says there, Stan Eggers, he says, the company is yours. No one is left to stand up to you, but I think you'll come to sorely regret that.
Starting point is 00:14:18 And I feel like in that scene, not only did Homeland or have that panic of like, what the fuck are you talking about? I'mta margin. What the hell is that? Okay. And then later, I love that later, he's like, I got to worry about the Iptu margin, okay? But I love that in the meeting, like, that the woman who brings it up, Maureen, right? She just immediately backs it down.
Starting point is 00:14:38 They're all kissing the ring. They're all kissing his ass. And they're like, you're great. You're wonderful. You're God. We're so lucky, blah, blah. And there's a look on his face where I feel like immediately he's feeling what Stan said, which is like there's no one here to push back on me at all.
Starting point is 00:14:52 These people are all rolling over for me. And that actually doesn't feel as great as I hoped it would, you know? Oh, I mean, I think if you take that one. step further because you were talking about Trump and the Taco Bowls, the minute we see The Deep take over for the crime analyst, I literally got flashbacks
Starting point is 00:15:11 to like the first few days of the Trump presidency and you would like get alerts about like everybody he was like putting in his cabinet and all the people who was surrounding himself with. So when you see later in the episode, like there's only two people left and like the Deep has literally cleaned house.
Starting point is 00:15:27 Anybody who's ever said anything bad about homelander is no longer allowed to work there. it was just like this kind of like a this is like a little too real for me right now like can we not but it is so interesting that that is what we've seen happen and to see it happen in Vaught
Starting point is 00:15:46 to see that the deep is the one doing it and like the deep is dumb as a like a sack of potatoes it was just wild what did you think of that whole scene of the deep and his girlfriend who's controlling the whole okay first of all uh shout out to bring in cupcakes on the first day. I think that's a great first move. A less good move is to eat
Starting point is 00:16:06 the one cupcake that then changed it from saying crime analytics to crime anal tics is what it's like he eats the why and then it just says crime analtics, a like beautiful moment. But I, okay, Amazon needs no free advertising for me, so I don't know why I'm doing their job for them. But I just want to shout out again. I mentioned these last week, the, the like pop-up notes, the trivia notes that come up when you're watching an episode of the boys. This is my favorite one this week. has to do with this. It says, Barb, the outgoing head of Votz Crime Analytics Department holds dual degrees
Starting point is 00:16:37 in criminal psychology and statistical analysis, speaks four languages and previously worked for the FBI at NSA. But it's comforting to know that crime analytics is now under the capable leadership of the deep who can talk to fish. So, yeah, I think that sums up the
Starting point is 00:16:52 Trump appointees that we remember so fondly. Oh, perfectly. I also want to, I want to, let's litigate this really quick. Okay. What would you guys rather have on like when you get a new boss at a company? Because any time in journalism you get a new boss, I'm like, yeah, motherfuckers are getting fired. So would you rather have bagels or would you rather have cupcakes?
Starting point is 00:17:15 I'm a fan of the like bagels and coffee. Follow up question. Jomi's deciding. So I have some follow up questions for you. Do the bagels come with smear of some kind? Yes. Here's the thing. The bagels come with the works. Like these are nice bagels. Oh, locks? We're talking locks? Yeah, everything. The sports. Locks and loaded then.
Starting point is 00:17:33 Yeah, you have me with locks. Yeah. Capers, cucumbers. Yes. Some tomatoes. Yeah. Red onion. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:39 Yes. Sign me up. Yes. Yeah. All right. Fuck a cupcake. You know what I mean? I just wanted to litigate that.
Starting point is 00:17:45 I'm glad we did. Now, in my other job today, I had to celebrate our light skin overlord, Drake. Okay. And I want to tell you, watching the boys, there was this one moment where soldier boy he hops on a plane he comes to new york and he hears some russian pop music and he freaks the fuck out like he has like all these flashbacks these trauma flashbacks and that's what listening to drake in
Starting point is 00:18:14 22 is like i'll just be like walking down the street and then i'll just hear drake's oz oz oz oz oz oz new album popping through the car and i'm just like oh god no and then everyone's like look at this villain look at this light skin villain walking around but Soldier Boy, got to let you guys know. We talked about him a little bit. He might be worse than Homewinder.
Starting point is 00:18:36 Like, I'm getting vibes from him where really, really quickly, he does not like interracial couples, doesn't seem to like black people, and he does not like members of the LGBTQ plus community. In a pride month. He looked at the Mave Pride, sticker up on the window with such disgust.
Starting point is 00:18:59 I'm like, who is this man? And it's also, what's his name? He's from Supernatural. Jensen Eichols, yeah. I can't hate him. I can't hate Johnson. No, I also can't hate Jensen.
Starting point is 00:19:08 He's doing something with his voice that is like very, very deep and kind of sexy. And I'm just like, fuck. But how did you feel about Soldier Boy in that first type of scene? Because he's like, it gave me Captain America Winter Soldier vibes heavy. Absolutely. Like when the Russian pop starts, it might as well be like longing, rusted, 17, day break. You know, like, but my.
Starting point is 00:19:30 My question is, is like, if the Russian pop is a trigger for him, like, how often is he going to encounter that? Like, how often is, like, Russian pop just playing out in the wild? Or is, or was that the trigger at all? I don't know. But, like, it seemed like that was his mentoring kid at it moment was like, no, not the Russian pop, anything but the backbeat, you know? Yeah, I was also wondering, were the people torturing him listening to Russian pop while they
Starting point is 00:19:53 were doing it? Because that is maniacal. I mean, it's a little Guantanamo Bay of them, right? but like, yeah, I don't know. What do you think, Jomey? I thought that was interesting. Because I assumed like just hearing the Russian, like forget the music, just hearing the Russian language, just like put his brain into a point where he had to like, you know, kill all those people, you know. But the Drake comp is kind of funny.
Starting point is 00:20:20 That is, that is pretty true. It's like I'm just, I'm so upset hearing this right now. Like I understand. So if Soldier Boy was hearing that Russian, he was like, I'm sick. I can't do this no more. I just, I can't, I can't function. You know, yeah, I get it. I feel him, but they have to go.
Starting point is 00:20:39 The boys have to go and they meet the legend. Okay, this is, this is your Hollywood type. This is the guy who was the Wheeler and dealer, okay? He was having some nice nights with Marlon Brando. Okay. The scene was wild. He used to work for Vaugh, and he was, Essentially, it feels like he was like the handler for superheroes.
Starting point is 00:21:03 He's this old Hollywood type who was wheeling and dealing. How did you feel about the legend? Okay. First of all, I just watched all of Stranger Things again. So I'm really in my like Paul Riser era. I'm huge fan of Paul Riser in general. And I love this rule for him. I feel like it's not something we've ever, he's got like a thick coating of like fake tanner on.
Starting point is 00:21:25 He's got the glasses on. He's got the fake leg. like everything that he's doing. And like, he reminded me a lot of when Van and I start to talk about cultural references that no one gets at all. Jomey and I are Q me are Qie now. We're like, who? What? We're on Google.
Starting point is 00:21:43 Like, oh, yeah. You said lowercase D, uppercase. Yeah, Kelly LeBrock. I think we need a jingle for like the legend. Like the legend is old, right? Like that's, I love all of his extremely. dusty ancient references to the various women and men
Starting point is 00:22:01 that he has banked. I'm thrilled. This is a great combo character, the legend. One that I wasn't sure we were ever going to get. And I never would have guessed that we would get Paul Rice as a legend,
Starting point is 00:22:12 but I think he's incredible. Also, the man is fearless. The man ordered clams casino from like Grubhub or room service or something. Absolutely playing with fire. Have you ever ordered clams on like food delivery service, either of you. Hell no.
Starting point is 00:22:30 I have a very not great stomach. There's no way I'm making it through the night with Grubhub Clams Casino. There's just no way. I know Jomey couldn't because Jomey's the cook of the crew. Well, listen, when the penny first started and I needed my boiling crab fix, you know, we would order, you know,
Starting point is 00:22:49 two pounds of shrimp, you know, crawfish, the whole thing, get delivered. That traveled pretty good, right? because it wasn't too far. So it was pretty hot when we got it. So it wasn't the worst thing. I've never had clam casino. And I'm looking at it right now.
Starting point is 00:23:06 It's a clam on the half shell with breadcrumbs and bacon with some green peppers in there. And I'm just going to let you know right this moment that if I ate that, like off a grubhub, I would simply cease to exist. I would just die. Yeah. It would ruin my stomach forever. Oh, my God. The legend is fucking tough. Like, all right, here's the thing.
Starting point is 00:23:27 Here's the thing. The legend, I'm assuming that, like, he's been there, done it all to him. This ain't nothing. This is light work, okay? His intestines, his whole inside of him is, like, coated in so much cocaine and whatever else that, like, nothing else can penetrate it. It's just a fine powder coating of cocaine. I mean, it was also wild that, like, Soldier Boy comes to. and visits him.
Starting point is 00:23:57 And like he's just doing lines with the legend. He's like, yeah, yeah, yeah. I got a revenge to do. But, yo, can I have a little bit of that? All right, cool, cool. I'll see you later. Like, hey, my man, the soldier boy, he's probably listening to that new Drake album,
Starting point is 00:24:09 like in between trying to kill Crimson Cowan is. And that's why I love Huey so much. Because the legend's like, hey, do you want some? He was like, oh, no, I'm full of cocaine. Of cocaine. Something I was watching this great Eric Kripki. interview where he was talking about how the art of comedy is not
Starting point is 00:24:31 the line but the reaction and that Jack Quaid who plays Huey is like the king of the reaction and so whenever a joke is not working in the edit they just cut to Huey's face to get a reaction shot and they're like and then suddenly the joke's hilarious.
Starting point is 00:24:47 Oh, that is genius. Look out for those Huey moments. Oh, that does happen all the time. All the time. Want to support your gut health? Take Activia's gut health challenge by enjoying two Activia yogurt today for two weeks and see if you feel a difference.

Starting point is 00:25:28 This episode is brought to by Paramount Plus. Beth and Rip are back in a new series. Dutton Ranch. Kelly Riley and Colhouser returned, and this time they're taking on Texas. As Beth and Ripp build a future together, peace will have to wait as they face corruption, danger, and a ruthless rival ranch
Starting point is 00:25:45 willing to protected secrets at all costs. Legacy is a beautiful thing, but only if it survives. Dutton Ranch starring Kohlhouser, Kelly Riley, Annette Benning, and Ed Harris now streaming on Paramount Plus. I want to pivot to what is quite possible.
Starting point is 00:26:02 like my second favorite thing to happen in this episode, but it's high up there. I thought what happened with the conversation that Butcher may have had to me was so good because I've been throughout this season like, Butchers politics are so flimsy. They almost seem as flimsy as homelanders where he goes on this rant about how all superheroes are just walking nukes, all of them need to be destroyed. Every single. one of them needs to go. And Maeve is there. And he gets, he tempts Maeve with this drink. They get drunk together. And they end up having sex. And what I immediately thought of is how Butcher's ex-wife had sex with Homelander. And this idea of as much as Butcher hates superheroes, he is not
Starting point is 00:26:57 impervious to their allure, their power. The best way I can describe it is like, Joe, I don't know if you I ever felt this way. I'm still very new in my journalism career, but I remember the feeling of being around celebrities when I was first in it. And like one time, like, I had a friend who was like working, who works with like a lot of famous artists. And he's like, dude, one day, this will all make you miserable. Like one day you will actually stop. Your eyes will stop going wide. You'll stop looking up to these people. You'll hang around them too much. And then you'll come back to me. And that exactly did happen. And when I was looking at Butcher, I was just like, oh, no, Butcher is not immune to this. Like, Butcher is not immune to taking Temp V. He's not immune to, like,
Starting point is 00:27:46 being with Mave and, like, having this thing. And he's so hypocritical in that moment of he's having this big, like, I hate all superheroes. And I'm like, do you really, though? Like, do you really? Mother's milk is telling him this whole episode, do you have a line? And I thought that that was kind of beautiful in terms of like how hypocritical butcher is. It's a, yeah, it's a little complicated. First of all, I want to say, I want to tell a story, which is like my first assignment, one of my very first assignments for when I was at Vanity Fair is I was at a film festival and Lee Pace was there.
Starting point is 00:28:18 And I had like an interview with Lee Pace. And later I listened back to the tape when I was transcribing it. And I laughed so loud and so long at like everything he said. It was the most embarrassing thing I've ever heard. in my life. And later, I, like, I stopped transcribing my interviews after that because I was like, I don't want to, like, I just got someone else to do it for me because I was like, I don't want to hear what the fuck I sound like.
Starting point is 00:28:43 And that, that wore off pretty quickly. But you're right. Like, there's that early, like, oh, my God. Yeah. He's so tall and he's so handsome. But I think also, I don't know, I might disagree slightly. For me, I think this episode draws a really important distinction between Huey and Butcher and their reactions to the Temp V.
Starting point is 00:29:05 Busher might be lying to himself and us, like, I'm sure, but like, he's talking about how much he says, I hated every second of it taking Tem V, whereas Huey admits I loved it to Annie, right? And so to me that I hated every second of it, everything that happens with Maven Butcher, which was great, by the way, was, it felt like a hate. fuck to me. Like, it felt like a self-hatred. I hate myself. I hate what I'm doing. I'm gonna like fuck you at the same time too. Like, do you know what I mean? Like, that's sort of what that's run from Maeve where I got the feeling from Maeve that like she's been backed into a corner for so many seasons. She's real, she's lost the love of her life. Everything has been taken away from her.
Starting point is 00:29:55 And it's not that she's like attracted to butcher in that moment. I think there is a self-hatred of like, everything that butcher is saying about superhumans is what she thinks of herself in the same way that Kimiko is like the minute she doesn't have powers anymore, so much of her life opens up. And I think so much of this season is kind of trying to show us how these powers are actually a curse. And like, Mave in that moment, and now that we're talking about it, I do agree with you, Joe, that it's like there's self-hatred on both sides. I don't know if, like, Butcher or Mave are attracted to each other. I think that. that like, I think the thing that probably butcher is attracted to is Maeve's power,
Starting point is 00:30:35 even if he does not want powers. I think there is a level of just kind of like powers allow me to do my job more effectively, even if I hate it. Because even though he's saying he hates taking temp V, there is a version of him who's like, it's allowed me to get this done faster than ever before. You're right. You're absolutely right.
Starting point is 00:30:55 And I think there's just that like, um, self-joyed. me in the self-destruction spiral, right? He's like, I'm drinking, I'm breaking my sobriety. Come break sobriety with me. Okay, I know, Maeve, that you are mostly attracted to women, but just come have sex with me anyway.
Starting point is 00:31:14 You know, like, we're here. We're down at the bottom of the barrel here. Like, come join me, right? Jomi, what do you think? I, the first thing I thought was like, oh, yeah, they just, they're just hate each other right now. And they're just like, just having sex because it's just bad. because you see, Butcher says the Pera-Pra-V made him more of him, and he hated it, right?
Starting point is 00:31:37 And the last thing that Butcher says before Maeve kisses him is that every single soup has to go. You know, real, like, heavy on the genocide there, Butcher. But Maeve is, but that's what Maeve takes is like, all right, man, we both in this little bad thing right now. Let's, like, get some, let's get some emotions out, you know, some twin exercise. And so, like, it definitely was like, I hate. Can I ask this? Because not to skip. Well, we will talk about my favorite moment of this.
Starting point is 00:32:07 But there seems to be a lot of kiss of deaths going on where the minute they had sex, I was just like, oh, you're going to do the TV show thing where one of these people is going to get the fuck out of here. And quickly, Maeve. Maeve death watch. Yeah, like, Maeve gets like, she has a conversation with Homelander. Homelanders, like, I can smell them on you. And I was like, damn, ma'am.
Starting point is 00:32:29 She, it's a rap. Like, it's a rap out here. Black noir comes out, like, smuggles are out the backhouse. Like, God damn, me. I mean, I'll say I'm worried about Maeve. Like, I'm not ready. Again, it's Pride Month. I'm not ready to do, like, that say that the boys are going to do a barrier-gays thing.
Starting point is 00:32:47 But, like, I think that, uh, you guys brought this up on the episode that I wasn't on, that you were worried about Maeve this season. And I'm like, yeah, I'm worried about Maeve this season. I love me. This is the work she's doing. These these objects, like, I love this character if you kill. Me too. Her and Kimiko are two where I'm just like, I will stop watching the show.
Starting point is 00:33:07 Oh, Kimiko was the show. I'll stop watching the show. But also, wait, wait, wait. Veda's not here to back me up, but I have to say it anyway. Probably answers no. Have either of you ever watched any of Zina Warrior Princess? Hell yeah. Okay.
Starting point is 00:33:24 Hell yes. That was my introduction to Carl Urban, right? because he played both Cupid and Julius Caesar on Zena Warrior Princess. And the thing I love about Mave is that she is styled to not only look like Wonder Woman, but also kind of like Zena Warrior Princess. And Carl Oven has definitely played a character who has fucked Zena Warrior Princess in the past when he played Julius Caesar. So this just felt like a Zena moment for me, and I just wanted to celebrate it. I mean, all I remember from Zina, I watched a lot of it, but I was very young,
Starting point is 00:33:54 is that didn't they used to have like so many crossovers with Hercules that other show? Yeah. Loved it. Zena had a very huge crush on Zena. If you have never done this, do yourself a solid and Google Carl Urban, Cupid, Zena Warrior Princess, because he's got like bleached hair and is like shirtless and oiled up and it is hilarious. So please enjoy that visual. Uh-huh.
Starting point is 00:34:21 Uh-huh. This is, what? I know. I know. You're welcome. You're welcome. This was killing it. This was killing it in the 90s.
Starting point is 00:34:30 Oh, my God. My man was killing it, yo. Yeah. And the thing about his bleach job is that they didn't even bother tone it. It's that like orangey bleach from like the first past the bleach has done on your, on his like jet black hair. And they're like, that's good enough. God of love. Sure.
Starting point is 00:34:52 Looks like that. I just rewatch Star Trek 2009. Yeah. And even in that, I was like, man, Carl Urban looks so different. Maybe, you know, he's more straight lace. You know, he's got the no beard, freshly shaving. But this, Cupid, is nuts. A revelation.
Starting point is 00:35:10 How old is called Urban? Immortal, I'm pretty sure. No, I just want to check because, like, my man got to, I'm going to say he got to be like 50. Early 50s, I would say. He's 50 years old. He's 50. I knew it. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:35:22 I knew it. All right. Before we get to, before we get to Kimiko Corner, my favorite corner, I got to be real, yo. Yeah. We got to get Ashley the fuck up out of here. Oh, man. My brother in Christ, you see the vision.
Starting point is 00:35:36 I need that pack. I need it expeditiously. I also, because I'm a little bit like, this is like the TV magic of it all. Nobody's going to ask this question, but how the fuck did Ashley get her job? Like, how did she become CEO? Is this, is, is it a homeland or appointment?
Starting point is 00:35:57 Yeah. Hell. Yeah. She's, she's just been, like, obsequious and there and just, like, like, ass kissing her way to the top, losing some hair along the way, but doing her best, Ashley. A, Ashley has to go, but B, like, we see a glimmer of humanity in her when Annie is trying to get her to talk about Maeve.
Starting point is 00:36:18 So, like, I feel like we're probably going to get some sort of redemption for Ashley at the end of the day, right? I mean, here's my thing. We might get redemption, but. You don't think she deserves it. Not only does she not deserve it, but we have to start talking about how every one of these people
Starting point is 00:36:35 would be a terrible spy. Because I'm like, you are in Vought headquarters and they're like plotting homelander's downfall in the building. Like literally, like there's a part where Starlight leaves the meeting and she immediately calls Huey. And I'm like, this man has superhearing.
Starting point is 00:36:52 What is happening right now? Here's my thing. And I, because that like that runs through my head all the time. But in my head, I'm just assuming Homeland has got like other things to deal with. He can't hear everything, right? Even like if he, if he trained is here to like, if he's not having conversation or just like, I wonder what's going on right now. Then yeah.
Starting point is 00:37:12 But if he's like, like they were dealing with the, the aftermath of what Soldier Boy did in New York. So he's preoccupied. He's not going to hear it. She was good. I would just like to occasionally cut away to Homeland or like listening to to his AirPods, right? Like, he's got the AirPods in. Like, occasionally when someone's plotting just cut away
Starting point is 00:37:30 and he's, like, rocking out to something extremely white. What's Homeland or listening to? I was about to say that. It's got to be, like, the most countryest of country music. I was going to say, like, Bruce Springsteen. Oh, yeah. Or since Steve is not here to push back, maybe some Bon Jovi. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:37:48 To follow up on our Miss Marvel conference. I was going to say something like the Eagles, maybe, like Chicago. Oh, yeah. For the record, I like all of this music, but it is mayonnaise white. You're not listening to Luke Holmes. Oh, wait, you actually know who Homelanders listening to? Yeah, you know who. Morgan Wallin.
Starting point is 00:38:07 Barats. No. That's true. That's true. Wait, I want to go back to this like Billy Maeve conversation for a second because he says one of the greatest lines in all of boys history, right? With great power comes the absolute certainty that you'll turn into a right cunt, right? Like, great, great moment. What Jomey was saying about this idea that, like, V just brings out who you are,
Starting point is 00:38:30 superpowers just bring out the essence of who you are. And I think it's such an interesting way to explore this. Because, like, in the comics, right, the boys are all on V. Like, all of the boys are on V, and they take it so that they can actually go, because it is ridiculous that actual human beings would go, be able to go toe to toe at all with superheroes, right? So they're all on V. And the people who created this TV show were like, well, if we're telling the story of like blue collar heroes versus the elite 1% have too much power asshole politicians or whatever, however you want to break it down, it doesn't make sense that they would have power. So they changed that.
Starting point is 00:39:11 And they've been giving a bunch of interviews about how they were worried that they were busting their own premise by introducing V into the season. But I think the way that it's been done where it's just Huey and it's just butcher, and they're, so far at least, and they're having, like, very different reactions to it. They're doing an addiction storyline, of course, but also this, like,
Starting point is 00:39:33 Huey being like, I loved it. It's not a great look for my guy Huey, right? Like, it's really, really tough. He went from, like, tripping last episode. Like, he was rolling while Kimiko was dying. This episode, he looks like Tyrone Biggams. Like, I'm just like, Butcher. Butcher. Can you not,
Starting point is 00:39:56 like, mothers milk is standing there like, yo, butcher, can you like stop, please? And I do think it's such a genius. Temp V in this season is so genius because seeing Huey and Butcher and how much it's destroying them in different ways, where it's like with Butcher, his entire journey this season is about like what depths will he go, what lines will he cross, and like how much does that kind of like shave down who he is? And I'm assuming at the end of this season, like, there's going to be nothing left in terms of like he doesn't believe in anything anymore. He's not really fighting for anything. As much as he's saying he's fighting for, um, the kid. He's fighting for like he wants all superiors dead. I'm like, there's not really a point behind it, at least with Mother's Milk,
Starting point is 00:40:44 his vengeance is tied to something. And there's, but he won't cross a certain line with Huey, Hughie keeps being like, I want to save you. I want to save Starlight. But I'm like, you don't want to save Starlight. You just don't want to feel emasculated. Like, this is not about Starlight. This is entirely about you and how the world perceives you. Exactly. And they do a great thing in this episode, I think. So in the first few episodes, we see that Huey can't open jars for whatever reason. The man struggles to open up jams, jellies, peanut butters of that nature, right? What about like a lemon curd? Do you think you can handle that?
Starting point is 00:41:19 Well, nobody can handle a strong lemon curd. You need extra strength to get a lemon curd open. But in this episode, right, he's not on the Temp V. He's chilling. He has like a different era of confidence around him where he just takes the jar out the fridge and opens it right in front of her face. He's just like, pops it off, right? So it's not about having powers.
Starting point is 00:41:43 And I think that's what he'll learn later. It's not about having power. It's not about the V. it's about the confidence about what's on the inside that matters. I know that's a real cheesy lesson, but they showed it in this episode. I thought that was really smart of them. That's so smart.
Starting point is 00:41:57 The jar thing, I didn't clock that. That's so smart. I think I was paying too much attention to the fact that, like, this was a triple white claw issue for Annie. She had a three white claw problem for her. It'd be like that sometimes. Mama said there be days like that, you know? Come on, Annie.
Starting point is 00:42:14 Like, you got, you got Vot money. need to get you a nice pino. Okay? You can't be drinking like three white claws like, but I will say like to your point, such a smart point, Jomey, I also think the thing is like the show has always played with Huey
Starting point is 00:42:29 in terms of like the joke is like, why is Huey here? What does he bring to the team? And I think the thing that Huey brought to the boys and the reason that Starlight fell in love with him is that Huey was always the moral compass. Huey was always the person
Starting point is 00:42:42 who was like really hemming in the boys and emotionally kind of being their guiding light. And it's so tough watching him this season not be that. And I think it's so interesting that now it has to be Mother's Milk. And now he's the guy who's like seeing all of the terror and everything that this group has wrought on society. And it's very, very interesting to see Huey. He's not a villain, but he's definitely, he's not great.
Starting point is 00:43:11 I'm not signing off on a bunch of stuff. Yeah, he's subscribing to the butcher way of life, which first of all, if you're listening, I would not recommend that type of vengeance. I know I'm a hater, but that's nuts. That's next level, Hayton.
Starting point is 00:43:25 That's a big list level hating right there. I can't abide by that. And Huey is going right down the path. And like Charles, you said, it's a sad way to walk. I can't promise that I wouldn't get addicted to temp V because, like,
Starting point is 00:43:37 maybe I would. But, like, I would like to think that the moment I start vomiting, like, green goo, is the moment I stop. Like that's what I like to think about myself. Also, should we mention that like when Huey is vomiting up the green goop at the
Starting point is 00:43:51 beginning of the episode, for a split second, butcher sees a kid. And I don't think we know who that kid is. It's not Ryan. I thought it was younger butcher. That's what my mind clocked. Yeah. It feels like, okay, here's a seed. We're going to pay off later, you know.
Starting point is 00:44:10 Drop it right there. That's good because I forgot that they did do that. we're going to Kimiko Corner, okay? Let me just say, Kimiko has my heart. If anything happens to Kimiko at all, I will find Eric Kripke and we will have to sit down. All right, we're going to have to have one long. All right.
Starting point is 00:44:30 There's a lot of big revelations. Kimiko speaks for the first time. And I was like, what's happening? And Kimiko and Frenchie. Joe, I need you to break this down. But here's my question. Okay, okay. Right.
Starting point is 00:44:51 So the movie I think they're watching his boy crazy was just Judy Garland movie. And so I've got rhythm is the song that Judy Garland is singing in that musical. And so we get a follow up on the earlier musical, like, dream sequence that we got with Kimiko earlier in the season. We get this beautiful, fantastic musical moment that ends. with like a real life smooch. We're going to talk about that, smooch at a second, but I just want to like,
Starting point is 00:45:20 a few things. Like, the choreography is impeccable. They're stealing from all the greats in this. There's like a little bit of music man in here. There's some Gene Kelly in here. Like, they're just doing candy colored,
Starting point is 00:45:32 full-blown. We love this. We're not embarrassed that we're doing a musical. We're just going to full-blown musical it. Secondly, I need to shout out my guy Frenchie, who is doing this in the tightest pants, imaginable,
Starting point is 00:45:44 as is his want. And apparently he wasn't like, you know how French he always wears these boots? Apparently they like had to put like dance shoes on him like underneath the boot sort of thing so that he wouldn't fall over. Which I love. But this is just incredible. I mean, I love a musical episode of any TV show. But this is just impeccable. Got me so hyped for the best movie that's coming out in 2024 Joker 2.
Starting point is 00:46:11 Jomey, passing two. You can't troll me. The Celtics lost last night. I'm good. I'm good forever. I loved it. That was awesome. I think, Joe, you spoke to it.
Starting point is 00:46:25 I know I've got rhythm because in eighth grade, we did a stage play called Crazy for You. I love Crazy for you. It was good. I was Link. Oh, my God. It was real cool. That's upsetting.
Starting point is 00:46:37 You were in the drama club? You were in the drama club, Joe? Yeah, I did drama. Yeah. Same year. Me too. Oh, okay. Look at us.
Starting point is 00:46:45 Wait, all right. I have a new name for us, okay? When it's Joe, me, Joe, and Charles, we're the drama club, okay? Love it. We're the drama club, all right? But, like, Steve was also a drama, I think. All right. I feel like a lot of podcasters were in drama.
Starting point is 00:47:02 It's the theater, the theater, kid energy, you know? A lot of podcast pipeline, you know, it was real, it's real there. It's always there. No, like, to your point, it was awesome. Like, that whole thing just really felt like an old. old school musical. They should do a whole episode. I know people ain't really rock with it.
Starting point is 00:47:19 I know my Junker 2 agenda, you know, is leaking out. But honestly, like, that was, I had a lot of fun watching. Are the people not, are the people not liking this? What have you seen around? People are reacting to this. I've had some people being like, well, some people are upset, like, because they thought the whole show was going to be an, like, a musical. That's Crickie's fault.
Starting point is 00:47:35 Because Crickie's like, we did a musical episode or so, or it was like, the Amazon social was like a musical episode. And then it was like, I'd already see the screener. And I was like, that's one number, guys. Joe, show me, let's be real. When I saw that musical happening, I was just like, damn Frenchian Kimiko, like, one of their times is up. We've been talking about it from last episode because they were like, one last job, one last job. And then they're going to Marseille.
Starting point is 00:48:00 And I was just like, God damn it, never say that shit, never say that shit. And then in this episode, we see that French's old boss blames him for everything that happened in Russia, so he needs to go. kill this man and his child. Frenchie doesn't want to go back to that life anymore. And I'm worried about French. I'm worried about French. French and Maeve got kidnapped in this episode. And here's the thing too.
Starting point is 00:48:30 Like, butcher. Butcher. Can you please keep a bet? Like, he needs to put like a little bit of like, find your iPhone on everybody close to him. Because he just did not get to fuck. He just got to buy air tags from Costco and just start putting it on people. Yeah, just put them, because everybody's getting
Starting point is 00:48:45 kidnap. But I have a follow question for you. Before French he gets kidnapped, though, or whatever, taken by gunpoint, he's got kind of like dicey reaction to the kiss. Like, you know, he's like uncomfy with it.
Starting point is 00:49:02 You know, what do you think is going on? And French's head. Let's be real. Kimiko seems like she's on cloud nine because she smiles. And the thing that I think and I might be reading into this too much, The reason I think Frenchie might feel weird about the kiss is that Kimiko seems like she's on cloud nine because she's lost her powers. It's almost this euphoria.
Starting point is 00:49:25 It's this high of just like she's finally gotten the one thing in her life that she's wanted for so long. And if I was going to predict, if I was a writer, I'm just like, okay, what would be the worst thing you could do to Kimiko after giving her the thing that she loves? Two. Twofold. It's either killing Frenchie. giving her back her powers or both. And I think French, she kind of knows in the back of his head. He's like, does she really want to go to this level and have like this sexual relationship with me when it seemed like the relationship was very brother sister oriented?
Starting point is 00:50:00 Or does she just not know what to do with so much of this happiness now? And will this ruin our relationship? I think it's a measure of, French, you kind of know his time is almost up. Right? And so, listen. I hate to be the one to say it. I just don't. I don't think they're going to kill either.
Starting point is 00:50:19 I don't think they're going to kill them. But like, I mean, as a human being, like, when you see the walls closing in, you know, and after how many years she makes the move. And he's like, man, this timing sucks. This is just like the worst absolute timing that you could have done this. Kimiko. My gosh. So he's like, you know, again, like after all this time, you finally get that moment. And he's just like, I just need a second.
Starting point is 00:50:46 This, you know, I just need one moment. And then, you know, it all doesn't, he doesn't come back. Right. He doesn't come back to Kimiko. And it's tough. But like, that's, that's really what it is. It hurt me. It hurt me to watch.
Starting point is 00:51:00 Yeah, right my feelings. How do you feel about, how do you feel about the case? What do you think it's, it's pointing us towards? Or what is it saying? Um, I'm a little worried, uh, by his reaction. Like, because I think he'll be fine and I'll think they'll be reunited and some way. But like if she wants something that he doesn't, or like, because my memory, I haven't rewatched the boys in a little while, but my memory is that like, this is what he wanted for a while.
Starting point is 00:51:25 Yeah. And she was like feral and like, no and like, you know, all this sort of stuff. So it's like, okay, she is finally on that page with him and what is his discomfort about? Maybe it's that exactly what you're saying, sort of, there's so much going on with her all at once that he's like, maybe I want to make sure that when we make this move. which I've been wanting for a really long time. It's not in the midst of all this other traumatic stuff that you're dealing with. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:51:50 That we're like in Marseille, drinking some wine. I hate to break it to you. They never get into Marseilles. The series finale? The series finale? Oh, my God. Oh, no. This episode is brought to by Whole Foods Market.

Get savings with yellow sale signs storewide and everyday low prices on 365 brand items. Enjoy the fresh flavors of spring. Save at Whole Foods market. Are we ready for
Starting point is 00:52:53 turd time? Or is that too... Are we ready for turd time? Is it Seth Rogen? Is Seth Rogen turn time for you? No, no, no, no, no, no. I would never. I would never put Seth Rogen in turd time. He's a national treasure. I love stuff. Okay. Something else has to go in turd time. What's that? I love this episode. But... But the minute, Blue Hawk yelled, Soup Lives Matter. I'm just like, get these shit off my... Like this whole season
Starting point is 00:53:22 I'm like, what the fuck are they doing with A train, bro? What is going on with A train? And I just knew some bullshit was about to happen. I knew it. And the minute that shit happens, I'm like, yo, it's 2022. Like, come on. Like, man, let me tell you something. It's not funny, right?
Starting point is 00:53:38 It's not funny at all. This is a serious matter. But when he shows up and he's reading the ham-fisted apology, he's like, yeah, man, I'm sorry. So I offended you guys. Yeah, that's my fault. I will just, you know, want to give 10K to you guys. I appreciate y'all.
Starting point is 00:53:57 Thank you for coming out. I was like, this is real life, bro. We live this. No, you forgot. He's like, and I have black friends and then he points to A trade. I'm saying, damn. A trade's the worst. It's the worst.
Starting point is 00:54:09 Like, oh my God. Before that, in the office, when Ashley's saying, by the way, Ashley's like, you're a fucking idiot to Bluehawk. But when he says, actually racist to call someone racist? Oh, yeah. And then says, is this like a canceled thing? Like, that's the thing about this fucking show, guys, is the crazy shit happened.
Starting point is 00:54:29 And then the rest of it is a goddamn documentary of the lives that we're, like, of the words that I've heard come out of dumb white people's mouths, you know what I mean? But here's the thing. I, like, I feel like when we get Blue Hawk going to the community center and everything that happens there, there are funny moments. but it's a, this show doesn't have the range moment where there's so many other things going on. I think the mother's milk story is already so strong. Mother's milk to me has been one of the more underserved characters and you have this
Starting point is 00:55:03 black character who's dealing with soldier boy who is this symbol of American imperialism, this symbol of racism, this symbol of like, old boys, that shit. It's working for me. It says so much about this country, so much about race, so much about. how powerful people get shit covered up. The A-Train of it all, I'm like, y'all don't got the range to do a Black Lives Matter episode. There's some of my favorite black shows that don't got the range to do a Black Lives Matter episode. It's just like, it's just like to make that funny and to make it land thematically within the season is tough.
Starting point is 00:55:39 And also, I don't give a fuck about A-Train. I know. I don't know about A-Train's brother. Like when they're like, he'll be paralyzed forever. I'm like, who gives a flying fuck? Like, I don't care. I don't care. Do you think the boys could do this if it were centered around a character that you actually cared about?
Starting point is 00:55:58 I just think that, like, so, and this just might be a me personal thing, I just think it's so hard to make Black Lives Matter funny. Like, it's just, like, and all lives matter, it's just, like, so comedically to pull that off has to take such a level of kind of, like, nuance. And like if we're going to be honest, like the boys is a primarily a white show. Most of the leads are white. There's a few black characters on it. I'm just like, y'all just don't, this is one of those when you all just don't have the range. And that's cool. And it was like the whole scene wasn't bad, but it was definitely a moment in the show.
Starting point is 00:56:33 I'm like, why are we doing this? Like, Soldier Boy and like the butcher and Homeland are so much more interesting. Why am I supposed to care about A-Train? Also the thing that they're trying to do the season, where they're, trying to be like maybe A train will have a redemption moment. I'm just like, yeah. Oh, I don't want it. I don't, I don't, I care so little about A train that, you know, he can, he can keep his redemption mark. But you want to know who I do care about. Seth Rogen? Yeah, wait, wait, wait, can I really quickly just, one thing I want to say is that you guys were asking, I think, of the episode that I
Starting point is 00:57:11 wasn't on if there were any black writers on the boys. And there are like just a few, but it is still, I will agree like Anselm Richards and Richardson is one who is credited I think for like episode three, but it's still absolutely predominantly white, white, fronted, white, written show. But
Starting point is 00:57:30 not as white as Game of Thrones. And also Wait, wait, wait, whoa. Got them! Piu! Pew, phew! And also like the screen that A train is watching at the end. Or Blue Hawk's like, yeah.
Starting point is 00:57:44 It's just like Blue Hawk defeated Antifa, whatever. And I was like, dude, like, God, like, it's, it's too real. To Charles the point, like, it's almost too real to be funny. Yeah, it's not, like, the problem is that there's, like, not really a punchline because everything that they're saying is just kind of, like, what's happened. And just, yeah, the black part of me is like, okay, so let me, let me say, I mean, and obviously, I'm translisantly white, but, like, let me, let me say one thing that I thought was interesting that they did, which is, like, when Blue Hawk comes in to the office, this is, by the way, is a show invented
Starting point is 00:58:15 character, he's not in the comics, but when he comes into the office, and he's, like, being friendly to A-Train, and then he says something about, like, you know, coach Brink trained us to be this way. So, like, which is shorthand for, like, we played college ball together, right? He's referencing this, like, they're doing a spinoff of the boys, said it, like, Vot run college, essentially. And so he's saying, like, hey, we were, we played. So that concept of, like, it's like, the guy who wrote this episode,
Starting point is 00:58:45 worked on the people versus OJ Simpson. The concept of some black people aren't black to you because they're like famous or you played sports together or whatever this idea that like Blue Hawk is treating A train differently than he treats every single other black character because of the proximity to power or whatever it is.
Starting point is 00:59:05 Do you know what I mean? That's slightly interesting to me. But I take your point. I think that's interesting. Like if they were going to go down the path and this would take like a lot more screen time and a lot more deaf writing. But if they're going down that path of like,
Starting point is 00:59:20 A-Train is this character because of his proximity to wealth and power, obviously does not understand what's happening in Trenton. And everybody who interacts with him, he's in this gray area of blackness where it's just like when he's on the seven, he knows that he's the only black person and maybe now noir, but I don't even know if he knows that.
Starting point is 00:59:41 But when he goes outside, I don't know how much of the public is just like, A train, our black hero. You know what I mean? I think that that's super interesting. I just think because A. A. Train is such a fraught character. The first time we're introduced to him in this show is him killing a woman and him
Starting point is 01:00:00 kind of being like, whatever about it. There's just so much work you have to do to make me be like, all right, he's sympathetic now. Yeah. It just falls flat in that area. I'm with you. I'm with you. Like a question, a question, I think that.
Starting point is 01:00:15 her and put it at the dock for us is like, you know, what can A trade do to get a redemption or whatever? And I'm like, nothing. I don't want it. I don't, I'm not interested in it. I mean, I think that's the thing about everyone on this heaven, whether it's the deep, whether it's A train, whether it's Homeland or even Mave to a certain extent, where they're all complicit. They're all complicit in this. They're complicit, but like, I'm interested in a Mave redempt, you know, because like in season one, Maeve is just sort of like, she's vaguely unsupportive of Homeland or but mostly supportive of him, you know what I mean?
Starting point is 01:00:46 And the journey that Maeve is on, I'm like, I'm invested in. But the deep can go fuck himself or an octopus if he prefers whatever the case of maybe. But are we ready to talk about Seth Rogen of it all, my hero? Seth Rogen, they, Crimson Countess, seems like she's in like a Tiger King scenario where she's buying like a like preserve for like apes but also in her free time she's a cam girl and one of her clients is set rogan who is a executive producer of the boys one of the people responsible for ushering it into the world uh joe what did you think of this scene iconic incredible
Starting point is 01:01:34 fantastic i could believe set did it i was just never never before uh have i seen anything so glorious i love set rogan i'm a huge seth rogan fan and uh i love the he's championed these comic book, like, that he's like, hey, comic books don't, comic book stuff doesn't need to be just like the shiny Marvel stuff, which is fine, but like, let's, this comics are also this. So, the fact that they've, uh, you know, he, he, he, he, he peed this and the EP preacher, um, fantastic shit. And I looked, I was, I was, I was like, have we seen Seth Rogen on the Boys before? Like, is this a recurring character? I couldn't remember. But this is his first appearance here in season three. Yeah. So I thought
Starting point is 01:02:14 It was fucking, it's great. Yeah, go ahead. It's hilarious that I was just like, if he's going to be anyone, I was just like, yeah, we're going to get, Seth, he's going to be like his big recurring character. Do you know, like the writer of this episode to be like, so Seth, like, yeah, like, you know, you're going to be like a little perv, like a little like pervy gremlin. And you're going to be on cam, like, uh, with Crim's Countess. And Seth just being like, uh, okay.
Starting point is 01:02:39 I hope it was his idea. I hope he was like, hey, can I play that guy this season? So when she gets attacked and he finishes anyway, and we send like the face that he pulls and the sound that he makes. She's like, oh, are you okay? Fucking Academy Award Emmy, Grammy, Tony. He got all all at once. I think he's been in two episodes of the boys.
Starting point is 01:03:08 Oh, I see. He's been in another one? Okay. Jomey to explain her checking us. Jomey, but I have to ask you as. someone who is currently in the midst of hot Jomey Summer. How are you feeling about this?
Starting point is 01:03:20 That was nuts, man. That was legitimate. Like, I can tell y'all this right now. I'll never be that down bad. You know what I'm saying? I understand. You know what I'm saying? Shout out to...
Starting point is 01:03:31 Don't King Shane. Don't King Shane. Shout out to Christmas Account is getting that bag. I ain't mad at her. Listen, we love sex workers over here, man. Power to you. All right? You know what I'm saying?
Starting point is 01:03:41 But I assume he bought the anal beads. Yes. Right? And he paid for shipping and handling. That could have been cheap. And then how much was it per minute?
Starting point is 01:03:52 And it was like counting. It's like what? Like $19 or something? And it was like, he still had like 18 minutes left. And I was like, bruh, that's a lot of coin, man. Like I understand.
Starting point is 01:04:03 You Seth Rogen, you had a bag. You know? Like I got to eat, man. Like I got to pay bills. I can't be spending money like that. But it was such a fun cameo, man.
Starting point is 01:04:13 It was so funny. Like him doing his laugh in the background just like, it's so good. It's so good. So also, I want to ask, do we think that the boys can come together as a team? Because here's the thing that I'm running into this issue with season three is that like, if the team comes back together and just like starts forgiving butcher, we can't do this for another four or five seasons. Butcher is getting to the point where I'm just like, he roofies Mother's Milk and teams up with the guy who killed his family.
Starting point is 01:04:54 And we know Mother's Milk, like, this is just storytelling. We know Mother's Milk is going to be a part of the boys again. But this is coming after an episode where Butcher didn't give a fuck about Kimiko. He quite literally sold off Frenchie for like a ham and cheese sandwich. I'm getting to the point where it's like, can the boys be a team and it be? somewhat emotionally realistic. Like, I'm not asking for my comic book show to be realistic, but I am asking for, like,
Starting point is 01:05:20 at a certain point, these people have to stand up to butcher. You make an excellent point, because that was my big question leaving this episode. Because at the beginning, Mother's Milk and Butcher have, like, a heart to heart.
Starting point is 01:05:34 He's like, dog, you don't care about anything. Like, all you want to do is be upset and fight soups. Like, that's it. You don't care about the reason we got into this mess. And then the last thing Mother Smoke says to a butcher as they're getting chemicals hospital, doesn't want to go after himself, right? And then even when he comes back, even when they're at the scene of the crime,
Starting point is 01:05:58 and he's like, listen, I know we've had our beef this last couple days, but we're both on the same path. You just got to trust me one time. Let's get this done. We can walk, right? and then he roofies him at the compound. And at that point, like personally,
Starting point is 01:06:22 I went on at that slide if I was Mother's Milk. Right. So when Mother Milk wakes up, how do you, like, how does he come back from that? Like, how does he wake up and go, hey, man, we're on the same team. Let's keep doing this. Like, there's no way, right?
Starting point is 01:06:36 I will be extremely interested next week. And like you said, Charles, and seasons, you know, going forward. How do they reconcile that? How does Mother's Milk reconcile with Butcher? I couldn't do it. Me? I'm done.
Starting point is 01:06:48 That's it. I'm walking away. No matter after everything, I'm walking away. There's no way. Yeah. How does he go and do that? I'll be interested to see how they play that going forward. I rewatched the episode like right before we started recording.
Starting point is 01:06:59 And when I got to that scene where he was like one last time, you know, blah, blah, very like, and then you could go to Marseille. One last thing, help me get him. And I was like, he's lying to him right now. He's lying right now. He already has a plan to drug the water. I mean, like, maybe. No, but, like, I mean, he offers him the temp V.
Starting point is 01:07:17 So what would he have done if he had been, like, ved up? I don't know. But, like, I don't know when he made the decision to Rufie the water. But, like, it's, yeah, it's fucked up. It's a line-crossing thing. Not to mention the fact that Mother's Milk is already dealing with fucking Todd. Oh, Jesus. Who is fucking, you know, brainwashing his daughter with Homeland.
Starting point is 01:07:40 or content. So, you know, who's the bigger asshole? Rough couple of episodes for Mother's Milk. Before we wrap up, Joe, Jome, you have any parting, any party things to say about episode five? I think we all really, really enjoyed this episode. The boys is, boys are killing it this season. Two quick things.
Starting point is 01:07:57 A follow-up fact check on Jomi's fact check, which is that I briefly scan a men's health article about this Seth Rogen cameo. He is cameo every season. He's done a cameo. Oh, okay. And in the first two seasons, he played himself. So the idea is that like this is still Seth Rogen as himself. It's just if Seth Rogen had a camgirl account, right?
Starting point is 01:08:17 Nice. And then the second thing I want to say is it goes all the way back to the beginning of the episode when they're watching the footage of like how Soldier Boy was made and tortured. And they shoot a machine gun repeatedly directly into his mouth. So does that settle the debate you guys were having about Homelander? Yeah. That's exactly. As soon as that hit on the screen, I was like, yeah, wow. Yeah, that's it.
Starting point is 01:08:39 Yeah. You can't get inside his head. Wow. It's, they know that. This is the nerd question. How the fuck do these heroes get operated on then? Do they get operated on or do they just heal? Yeah, you survive the most of that.
Starting point is 01:08:52 You're right. Wait, do all heroes in this universe have healing powers? I think there's like, well, most heroes that are, you know, that are non-human, like, not the Batman's, not the Iron Man's, but most of those have like a healing factor, whether it's Deadpool level or just like, you know, even Spider-Man has a healing factor, right? Like, it's nothing crazy, but, you know, it'll get the job done. Okay, just wanted to make sure. Like when Huey takes the temp V and then all of a sudden his broken arm is fine, right?
Starting point is 01:09:23 Yeah, exactly. Also, someone pointed out to me that, you know, when we were talking about how Butcher has homelander powers, someone's pointing out to me that Huey has, it's not exact same as A-Train, but it is kind of close to A-Train in that he can move from one spot to another really quickly. So what you're saying is that at the end, he was just going to blow through somebody on accident
Starting point is 01:09:46 and that's going to be his wake-up moment to be like, hey, I got to get off this V. And Starly's like I'm going to need a few more white claws to get through this one. The last thing I'll say before we go is this is episode five. And next week's episode title is called Hero Gasm. them. Now, I haven't seen the screeners because Amazon is hoeing you, boy. But allegedly, we're in for some crazy television, some never before seen nuts episode of the boys. I'm excited.
Starting point is 01:10:23 This is what they've been, I mean, if people have read the comics, you know what herogasm is. I just read heroism. I have no idea. I have no idea what to expect. I mean, I kind of know what to expect. The voice contains adult content. That's what I will say. Wait, Joe. Have you watched Urogasm? I haven't watched the episode yet, no.
Starting point is 01:10:45 But I've read the comics and I've... Don't get caught up, Joe. I've talked to some of the creators about this and they were like... It was sort of like... It's like the way that's not to bring up Thrones again, but it's on my mind because this John Snow spin-off bullshit. But like the... The Thrones creators were always like,
Starting point is 01:11:07 we just wanted to get to the Red Wedding in season three. That's what we wanted to. We wanted to be able to do that. And we were building up to that, building up to that. And we got to that. And then, of course, they did like five more seasons. But I feel like HeroGasm is the Red Wedding. The voice has been building up to.
Starting point is 01:11:23 Not in terms of, like, death toll necessarily or whatever. But it's just like, it's so wild. And, like, they've said that, like, Amazon and Sony gave them some notes in season one, but basically stopped giving them notes once they saw how popular this show was, and especially after season two when they got an Emmy nomination. So now I feel like they're like, you know what? We can do whatever the fun. We are a homelander.
Starting point is 01:11:45 We can do whatever the fuck we want because we got the ratings. We got the awards cred. Like, who's going to stop us? So, HeroGasm. You heard it here first. Joanna said that HeroGasm is the red wedding to the before the boys. Write it up blogs. Right it up.
Starting point is 01:12:03 Aggregate this content. Aggregate this. Screen ran, I know you're listening. Guys, I feel like that's, we just did an episode. That's our episode of the drama club. How are you all feeling? Oh, quite theatrical. Can't wait for, can't wait for the cast party.
Starting point is 01:12:20 I feel pretty. Oh, so pretty. That is a wrap on this episode of the drama club. Wednesday, the Midnight Boys return to react to the season finale of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Thursday, Van will look at third episode of Miss Marvel. Friday, Joanna Mauer returns to give you their deep dive. On the season finale of Obi-Wan Canovi, Sunday,
Starting point is 01:12:44 Stephen Jomey will be back with Min Edition to talk about Umbrella Academy season three. And then next Monday, the three of us will be back to discuss the sixth episode of the boys' season three. Yes, guys, they are not giving us any breaks here. Get ready for some content. All right. Producer credits. Shout out to our producer, Jonathan,
Starting point is 01:13:04 Spidey Kerma. Jomi Adoneron, Fria Jomi on social media, an additional production from Arjuna, Ram Kippal. Charles, take us out. I don't have anything today. Being van is very, very hard. It's draining, right? Being van is very... Jomey, can you be Charles? Can I be Charles? Yeah, can you drop some bars here at the end from? Jome, Jomey, take us out. I'll try and be better than Huey, and I won't have a special. But guys, I cannot wait for the boys' episode next week called Hero Gasm. Bha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha! Yeah!
Starting point is 01:13:48 It's a wrap, guys! You're the best joke! Feels like every product claims real protein these days. But real doesn't start on a label. It starts at the source. Like real California milk from California Farms, families. It's real dairy delivering high quality complete protein with all nine essential amino acids to help build muscle, give you energy, and keep you satisfied longer. So keep it real. Look for the seal.
Starting point is 01:14:35 Real California milk.
