Starting point is 00:00:28 Travel moves us. What's up, everybody? This is Russell Brunson. Welcome back to the Marketing Secrets Podcast. I want to give you a gift that will simplify your life so much. So the big question is this. How are entrepreneurs like us, who didn't cheat and take on venture capital, who are spending money from our own pockets,
Starting point is 00:00:46 how do we market in a way that lets us get our products and our services and the things that we believe in out to the world and yet still remain profitable? That is the question and this podcast will give you the answers. My name is Russell Brunson and welcome to Marketing Secrets. All right, so I want to tell you guys a quick story about how I got started. Some of you guys may have heard the story. My very first idea, even pre-Potato Gun, was an idea for a product called Zip Brander.
Starting point is 00:01:17 If you go back to the Wayback Machine and search Zip Brander, you can see the old sales letter and stuff. But I was super proud of it. It was software and I remember I didn't know how to code software. And my first kind of mentor, the first person I was like watching at the time
Starting point is 00:01:28 was a guy named Armin Morin. And Armin had a whole bunch of software products. I was like, I wanna make software like Armin. And so, bought them a domain named Zip Brander. I knew what the software was gonna be. And I was like, okay, I have to learn how to code. So I literally went to my school and I changed my major from, I don't even know,
Starting point is 00:01:42 communications to like computer information systems. I'm like, I'm gonna learn how to code. Zip Brand brand is gonna be the greatest thing in the world. I'm gonna become a billionaire from it. Like I knew it was the thing. And, um, and so I started doing that. And after, um, like the third or fourth day of like coding class, I was like, I am not smart enough to become a coder. I'm screwed. So I need to figure out a different path. Um, and so then I, I remember reading a bunch of stuff that Armand was putting out. I was listening to all his teleseminars back in the day, and in fact, it was funny. I was hanging out with an event this weekend.
Starting point is 00:02:10 I was speaking at this little local doTERRA event, and one of the people there was, she's actually married to one of the wrestlers from my college wrestling team, and she came up to me, and she was like, telling me the story about it. She's like, my husband, Casey. I'm like, I know Casey, of course, and she's like, he told me these stories.
Starting point is 00:02:25 Like he said that when you were back in college, you guys were going on these wrestling trips. You guys would go drive the vans that have like 10, 15, 20 hour drives to like the wrestling tournaments. And he's like, you'd be in the back with your headphones on, with your CD player with like the light glowing on your face.
Starting point is 00:02:37 And she's like, he said you look like a serial killer. Which is so funny. Anyway, but that was me. I was like literally, burned cds of tele seminars because pre-webinars pre-videos i burned cds of arman moore and and um oh alex mandojan all these people back in the day and i would drive my in my car and i'd listen to cds in the back of the car like this is amazing listening to all this stuff right and i remember if it was a cd or if it was a an article but i remember arman basically said that he's like i don't code my own software it's
Starting point is 00:03:03 like wait what i'm going to school to learn to code my own software. I thought Armin was coding his own software. He's like, nope. He's like, I went to the site and the site he used at the time is no longer here, but it was scriptlance.com, scriptlance.com. And so I was like, so this is when I got to a computer, I went to scriptlance.com and it was this programming site where you hire programmers. And I remember I was like, Oh my gosh, this is amazing. And, um, in fact, let me step back. It was right before I learned that. Um, I was like, I'm not gonna become a programmer. I know that now I need to hire programmers. Went to Google and typed in programmer. And I remember there was the Google ads and I clicked on a programming company and I gave them
Starting point is 00:03:36 the idea for zip brander and they said they wanted like five grand to build it. And I was like, five grand. Like that's like more money than I made in my entire life combined at that time. Um, so to put that perspective, like I'd never had a, I had a couple of jobs waiting tables, but had not made five grand in a year ever. And it was like five grand to make this thing. And so I kind of gave up on it. So then fast forward now, I hear about ScripLance. I go to ScripLance. I remember seeing, so you go and create a free account. It's free, super easy. And, um, and then, uh, and then you post a project and then people from all around the world bid on your project. And I was like, what?
Starting point is 00:04:06 So I took the description I had sent the people before for my zip brander. I copied and pasted it into ScriptLance. Posted it. And within 15 minutes, I had 30 bids on it. I was like, what? And the first guy was like, I'll do it for $1,200. I was like, what? That's one-fifth the price of the other guys.
Starting point is 00:04:20 The next guy was like, I'll do it for $800. I'll do it for $600, $500. And we're all the way down. And all of a sudden, this dude named Cyprian from Romania said said i'll do it for uh for 800 i'll do it for 600 500 and we'll all be down and all of a sudden this dude named cyprian from romania said i'll do it for 20 i was like i actually have 20 i think that's all the money i had so i was like done so i hired cyprian i gave him the thing i was like i don't know if it's gonna work or not but it's worth 20 bucks so i paid the 20 bucks to and they put it in escrow so i put 20 bucks into into script plans it's an escrow gave cyprian the idea and, I went to bed, woke up in the morning. He's like, here you go. I'm like, what does this say? Cause it brander. I'm like, what? He gave it to me and I tried it and it worked 20 bucks.
Starting point is 00:04:53 And I was like, Oh my gosh. Um, and so I was so happy. Like I literally gave him a hundred dollar bonus. Cause like, I thought it was gonna be five grand fits. I was trying to save up for it or I was gonna go to programming school. And so I remember, um, that point, I was like, I never have to pay attention to school ever again. My job is not for me to learn how to be a programmer. My job is to get an idea and then to hire a programmer. What? And I went to scriptblast.com. It cost me 20 bucks to get my first software product created. Okay. Now I tell you this because I remember I had a friend, Josh Anderson, and Josh was kind of the same business as me. We actually shared an office for a long time. I remember I had like four or five little product i'd create a zip brander article
Starting point is 00:05:28 spider four and four inches i had like five or six little software products i'd create at the time that i was selling and um and josh didn't have a product yet he was then he's like i've been studying the internet marketing i'm learning i'm putting in two years to just like understand this business i was like you should stop studying just go create a product and sell it like that's basically all this game is create a product sell it and he was like yeah but was like, yeah, but like, uh, you know, like all these things. And so I remember one night I showed him, I said, let me show you how script lance works. It's really simple, really easy. So I went to script lance and, uh, I create, I was like, here's my account. I'm like, I'm like, just post it. Just post anything. Just post something
Starting point is 00:05:57 stupid. I post, I need a logo for this thing and pay 20 bucks for it. And he's like, oh, so he did it. I showed him, he walked through, he posts it, logo, 20 bucks. And then, then uh and then all of a sudden bids start coming he gets 10 20 30 50 100 bids in like an hour and then uh he's like he's like going through talking to people meeting people meeting people in india and romania and and pakistan all these all over the world who are working for super cheap he's meeting all these cool people he's taking out them and i remember i was like again it was a basement apartment that i owned that our little office was in so it was about time i had to go to bed so i was like well i gotta go see my wife or go to dinner. I'm like, I got to go.
Starting point is 00:06:27 So I went upstairs and I closed the door and I was with my wife that night. Anyway, next morning I wake up, I come down the stairs and I see Josh. I'm like, oh man, you're here early. He's like, no, I'm not. I'm like, what do you mean? He's like, I haven't left yet. I'm like, what? He's like, dude, I did the logo.
Starting point is 00:06:39 Pay to get 20 bucks. Check out this logo. It's amazing. I'm like, that is cool. And then I posted an idea for this audio thing I had. And he had like five or six different, um, different ideas that he had been sitting on for years. He just posted them and he's had people bidding on him. And he's like, I heard this guy's doing this, this guy's doing this. And he had like five
Starting point is 00:06:55 software products in, in like, in, um, in like work, like happening all overnight. One of them was already done. And he's like, it's already done. And I was like, oh my gosh. And I remember watching him like on all his like LinkedIn profile or whatever we had back. I remember it was back in the day. I think it was rise as the business network. Anyway, he changed his name from like Josh Anderson, internet marketer to Josh Anderson, software developer. And I was like, and now he like, he had the keys and he was running and he was creating thing after thing after thing. And he was just having tons of success. And I watched him create software after software after software. He still does they make software, but it all started with him just doing it once. Okay. And I think a lot of
Starting point is 00:07:28 us, we get so scared, like, I don't know how to do it. Like we never do it. And so this is my thing I want you guys to do. Okay. Scriptlance is no longer there, but the site that is there is called freelancer.com. And there's other ones. Freelancers just, Scriptlance was my favorite. There was, back then it was Scriptlance, there was Odesk, there was, uh, rentacoder.com. There's a bunch of ones like that, but Scriptlance was my favorite because they got bids back so fast. Yesterday I was doing a project. I went to Upwork or Odesk or Upwork, whatever it's called now,
Starting point is 00:07:50 and I posted it. It's just like, it's slow and it's expensive. But so I went to Freelancer, which Freelancer, I think, bought Scribblance. And I posted it and it was like, boom. Within five minutes, I had like 30 bids. I picked somebody, the project got done before I woke up in the morning.
Starting point is 00:08:02 And so I was like, oh my gosh, this is so exciting. So I recommend, this is what I want you to do. I want you just to do it as a test, okay? If you trust me on this, this will unlock yourself to so much freedom. You can become a software developer, a programmer, a writer, whatever, by just doing this step, right? It takes all the hard work out of it. Just going to freelancer.com, create a free account,
Starting point is 00:08:19 go over there and post a project. I don't care what the project is, make it simple, make it dumb. And just do like five bucks. Like five bucks, I need somebody to animate my signature. Five bucks, I need somebody to whatever. In fact,
Starting point is 00:08:30 I remember the way I learned how to FTP is I posted on ScriptLens, I'll pay someone five bucks to teach me how to FTP a file to my server because I didn't know how to do that, which nowadays you don't really do that. But back then, someone had to teach me.
Starting point is 00:08:39 So I was paying five bucks. He showed me how to do it and I was like, oh, I'm done. Five bucks. And it's just so simple and so easy. You can get work done super cheap, but you'll find out really quickly how freeing it is.
Starting point is 00:08:47 Like, oh my gosh, this is like actually the easiest thing in the world now. Versus before, it's like, ah, struggling and frustration, all those kind of things. And so anyway, I want to put that out there as a thought for you guys of just, here's a really simple, easy way to get something done and it'll unlock the floodgates for you, okay?
Starting point is 00:09:03 If you've never done it before in the past, it's gonna be a little scary. Because you're like, ah, it's scary. Just like Josh, didn't do it, didn't do it. As soon as he did it, they gave him the ability, like now I can create, now I can be a software developer, now I can, whatever the thing is you need to do. And so just do it, just do test projects.
Starting point is 00:09:16 Waste 10 bucks on something stupid. You're not even gonna use, throw it away, but just do it once and then you'll be like, oh my gosh, this is cool. I just remember me, the very first time I did it, I was like, I met people in India and Romania. I also had friends all around the world because I had hired them on these sites
Starting point is 00:09:28 doing all these projects for me. I remember just how cool it was to be able to do that. So that is your task for today, is to go to freelancer.com, create a project, submit something, and just do it. Just see it once, and I guarantee you'll be like, you'll feel like the handcuffs were broken off your hands and you're now free to create and do stuff for forever.
Starting point is 00:09:44 So that's my assignment for you guys. Hope you enjoy it. Appreciate you all. And I will talk to you guys all soon. Bye everybody. Hey everybody, this is Russell again. And really quick, I wanted to invite you to join arguably the best thing that we've ever put out
