Starting point is 00:00:00 Hello, my friends. Welcome back to the Ryan League podcast where we love to keep things short and sweet for you each and every week. Today's episode is entitled even if you don't feel like it. Did you know that you get the same results from doing hard things when you don't feel like it as you do when you do feel like it? Think about that. Your results do not care about your feelings. You don't feel like going to the gym? Of course you don't. But if you went anyway, your body wouldn't know the different. The weights don't check your mood. The treadmill doesn't ask if you're having a good day. Your muscles don't say, oh, you're not feeling it today. Let me go easy on you. No, the work is the work and the results are the results,
Starting point is 00:00:44 regardless of how you felt when you showed up. I think we've been sold this idea that motivation is a prerequisite for action that you need to feel inspired before you start, that you need to wake up. up with fire in your belly that you need the right playlist the right energy the right environment the right mood and if all those things happen fantastic but how often do you get that how often are you going to get perfect conditioned and you can ask yourself the question like well what what happens when i don't have perfect conditions because i don't know anybody who feels motivated 365 days a year
Starting point is 00:01:28 There are going to be mornings when you wake up tired. There are going to be seasons when you're disappointed. There are going to be days when the thing you used to be excited about doesn't excite you anymore. And if your commitment requires your feelings to cooperate, you're going to have a hard time staying committed. That's why I think we've got motivation backwards. And hey, I'm a motivational speaker. And so, I mean, it's like I spend a lot of my days on this planet trying to motivate people. But even as a motivational speaker, it's like, I mean, we can think motivation is going to create action.
Starting point is 00:02:08 But that's actually not how motivation works. A lot of times, action creates motivation. You start moving and then the energy shows up. You start writing and then the ideas start flowing. You make the first phone call and suddenly the second one doesn't seem so bad. You start cleaning the room and 20 minutes later you've organized the entire closet. it. Sometimes the feeling follows the behavior, but you've got to start before you feel like starting. That's the whole game. Psychologists actually have a name for a version of this idea. It's called
Starting point is 00:02:42 behavioral activation. One of the principles behind it is that we don't always have to wait for our internal state to change before we change our behavior. Sometimes changing what we do can help change how we feel. In other words, you don't always have to feel your way into action. Sometimes you have to act your way into a feeling. Think about the most disciplined people you know. Do you really think they wake up every morning excited to do hard stuff? Of course not. Well, I say of course. I mean, I don't know that you actually even know what these people are thinking, but sometimes, you know, you think about the 5 a.m. You go, well, they just wake up like that. It's like, well, or they made a difference.
Starting point is 00:03:29 decision that they were going to wake up even when they didn't feel like it. I mean, the athlete training at 5 a.m. doesn't necessarily love 5 a.m. But they love what 5 a.m. produces. The salesperson making the 50th call doesn't enjoy getting rejected. They enjoy what persistence eventually produces. The writer doesn't wake up every morning with brilliant ideas pouring out of them. Sometimes they sit down, stare at the screen, and write something terrible until something good finally shows up. Discipline is not feeling like doing something every day. Discipline is deciding that some things are too important to be left up to how you feel today. And I want to be clear about something.
Starting point is 00:04:19 Your feelings matter. Feelings make us human. They can tell us when we're hurt. They can tell us when we're exhausted. They can tell us when something needs our attention. There are times when our body genuinely needs rest. There are times when our minds truly need a break. There's going to be times when slowing down is wisdom for all of us.
Starting point is 00:04:43 So I'm most definitely not telling anybody to just ignore your feelings. But I am telling you, don't let them be your boss. Your feelings should get a vote. but they should not get a veto. Because feelings are incredible information, but they can be terrible instructions. I don't feel like apologizing. Of course you don't.
Starting point is 00:05:09 Who feels like apologizing? Think about that for a second. All right. So you don't feel like apologizing. Apologize anyway. I don't feel like having that conversation. Of course you don't feel like having that conversation. You would much rather talk about the weather or fantasy football
Starting point is 00:05:25 or a reality TV show. There's so many other things you feel like talking about, but I know it's a difficult conversation, but you should have it anyways. I don't feel like working out. Okay, I don't feel like working out. Go anyway. I don't feel confident enough to apply.
Starting point is 00:05:41 I get it. Apply anyway. I don't feel ready to start. I get it start anyway. I'm scared. Do it scared. We have this idea. The courage means the fear
Starting point is 00:05:55 eventually disappears. I don't think that's how courage works. Courage is when fear is in the car but doesn't get to drive. You can be scared and still move. You can be disappointed and still move. You can be tired and still move. You can be insecure and still move. You can be grieving what didn't work and still take the next step toward what could. Your emotions don't have to agree with your decisions. For your decisions, to be good ones. And this matters because your life is being shaped by what you repeatedly do.
Starting point is 00:06:34 Not what you occasionally feel inspired to do. Imagine two people with the exact same goal. They both, let's say, one write a book. First person writes, whenever they feel inspired. Some weeks, they write 5,000 words of the weeks. They don't touch it because the inspiration isn't there. The second person writes whether inspiration shows up or not. Some days the writing is great.
Starting point is 00:06:57 Some days it's average. Some days they probably delete half of what they wrote, but they keep showing up. I'll give you one guess as to who's going to finish their book first. The person who learned how to work without needing the feeling. That's the advantage. Consistency beats intensity when intensity can't be sustained. You don't need one incredible workout every three weeks. you need to keep showing up.
Starting point is 00:07:27 You don't need one incredible conversation with your spouse once a year. You need to keep showing up. You don't need one productive Monday where you change your entire life before lunch. No, you need Tuesday and Wednesday and Thursday, especially Thursday, because anybody can show up when the music is playing
Starting point is 00:07:46 and they're feeling good. The question is, who are you when you don't feel like it? that's where so much of your future gets built not on the days when you're inspired on the days when you're not so here's what I want you to try the next time you hear yourself say I don't feel like it don't argue with the feeling acknowledge it you can even say to yourself you're right
Starting point is 00:08:11 I don't feel like it 100% and then go do it anyway go to the gym uninspired write the chapter unenthusiastic, have the conversation nervous, make the call unsure, show up tired, take the first step scared because progress doesn't require your enthusiasm. It requires your participation. Your feelings can come along for the ride, but they don't get to choose the destination.
Starting point is 00:08:45 And here's the beautiful part. You get the same results from doing hard things when you don't feel like it. as you do when you do feel like it. The mile still counts, the rep still counts, the page still counts, the phone call still counts, the apology still counts, the conversation still counts, the steps still counts. And so, if you don't feel like it, I get it.
Starting point is 00:09:12 Do it anyway. Do it tired, disappointed, uncertain, unmotivated. And as Glennon Doyle often says, if you can't beat the fear, just do it, scared. And I love that because it's like, who's the boss here? Your fears, your feelings? Or do you acknowledge that you have those things? And you still make a decision anyways to keep showing up.
