Episode Date: July 11, 2022

Today's episode is tackling chapter 8 From Chasing Failure entitled All I Do Is Win. One of the procrastination hacks we can employ is instead of looking at what you can accomplish in a year, look at ...what you can accomplish in a day. Join the conversation with Lacey Stenson and Ryan Leak to learn more. You can also get your copy of Chasing Failure at ryanleak.com. Starting point is 00:00:00 Today's episode, my good friend Lacey and I will be unpacking chapter 8 from my book, Chasing Failure. All I do is win. All I do is win, win, win, win, no matter what. This is the chapter where we talked about trying to overcome procrastination. I can't tell you how many times I've been staring at a blinking cursor, looking at a long list. of things I need to get done, my sometimes dreaded to-do list. And I would just rather do a million other things.
Starting point is 00:00:40 I'd rather go play basketball. I'd rather go hang out with some friends. I'd rather go get lunch with my wife. I'd rather play with my kids. I'd rather go play NBA 2K. I'd rather go watch YouTube highlights. There's so many other things that I would rather do sometimes. But one of the things that I've learned is that sometimes you just got to keep
Starting point is 00:01:00 putting one foot in front of the other and just get a win today. Just get a W today. And I think when you add that up, over time, you're going to look back and see you've got a lot of Ws. All I do is win, win, win, no matter what. Ladies and gentlemen, go ahead and check out this conversation that me and my friend Lacey had about Chapter 8. Lacey, here we are again. talking about chapter 8 all I do is win I feel like we need that song
Starting point is 00:01:36 can the editing team somehow put that in Ryan when we get the goal DJ hit that track boom there it is we got the track and hopefully this podcast doesn't get cool I think there's like a time limit but I think we're good
Starting point is 00:01:53 all I do is win no matter what you're probably one of the busiest people that I personally know, and I know a lot of busy people, you're pulled in so many different directions. So I'm excited to unpack today's episode to really talk about goal setting, task management, and how we get to tackle the day. Yeah. Yeah. You know, what's funny is, is so many people will look at what they have to do and think to
Starting point is 00:02:23 themselves, I don't know how I'm going to do all of this. well you just fast forward a month later and you look back and you just now you're going I don't know how I did all of that do you see where a transition from I don't know how I'm going to do transitions to I don't know how I did it but the good news is you did it it's over yeah you're better than you're done that's somehow. You were better than you thought. You were smarter than you thought. You were more efficient than you thought. You actually, I remember in the last November, I think I had 27 events. It was insane. It was insane. Absolutely insane. Now, I remember starting in November thinking to myself, Brian, just make it to December. Just make it to December. Just make it to December. And I'm looking at all these events going, I don't know how in the world I'm going to be able to do all these events. Yeah, because you have personal stuff going on, right? Oh, my gosh. If you were 20 and single and you had 29 events, bring it, bring it on. All day, every day, yes. Yeah, but it's like assistant coach from my son's basketball team, NBA chaplain.
Starting point is 00:03:48 And most NBA chaplains are, they just do home games. Yeah. But because the team I'm the chaplain for is in New York, I do it via Zoom. So I do it home and away game. That's 82 small events that has really nothing to do with my actual business. That's volunteer work. Does that make sense? So just between the NBA and my son,
Starting point is 00:04:25 Just basketball alone is a nice chunk of just my time. And so, but it really is, I feel like some of the systems I've created just in my own life of making sure priorities are set. I have a date, days and nights on my calendar. It's not an accident. Like we're not going to, if I was hoping for an accidental dinner with my wife out, they're never going to happen. It's never going to happen. Like I have dates with my wife probably planned out three, four months in advance.
Starting point is 00:05:15 I have to because if I don't, something or someone will, ask for that time in some way. Just think about that. I mean, we should just pause on that alone because it actually doesn't matter how busy you are. That statement you just said, Ryan, it's so true. Even if you have no job, right, or anything going on, time with our spouse or time with people in our life,
Starting point is 00:05:42 very rarely happens by accident. So it's worth planning out. I think that's just good for anybody that's not as busy. Keep going. You're doing great. No, no, 100%. So I think part of the, of what I talk about in this chapter is there's so many, so many things that you, you want to accomplish.
Starting point is 00:06:04 There's so much that we want to accomplish this year, so much we want to accomplish in our life. We have bucket list. We have yearly goals. What I have is I have daily goals, daily list. Here's what I need to do today. If I can win today, I'm good. Sometimes those are bigger wins. Sometimes those are smaller wins if I'm working on a book.
Starting point is 00:06:33 Sometimes coming up with a book title is a win. Sometimes coming up with a chapter title is one. Sometimes it's, I think the other day I did three hours of research for one paragraph in a book. Did you even use it? Usually, I know in your book, you talk about your phone. Oh, my goodness. I mean, I hope I will use it. Right now, the book is around like 65 to 75,000 words, I believe.
Starting point is 00:07:09 I know full well that it'll probably end up being 50, maybe 55. So did I keep it? I don't know. We're not at that point yet. So I'll keep you posted. But for me, that was a win that day. And even if I use that in the book, it's still, I found it to be very valuable information
Starting point is 00:07:34 that I think can help people. You know, I can use that in a keynote or a message somewhere or in coaching. You know, it was very valuable information one way or another. But that is the, that was my win for that day. It's forward movement too, right? It is. It is.
Starting point is 00:07:50 heard you say before. You got to just keep moving one step at a time. Now, let's, you know, 365 days in a year. And let's say every day you just say, hey, today I just, I need a, I need a win. That could be playing with your kid. I'm not here to define your win. My next book will help you do that. But today, I don't, I don't, I'm not going to argue with anybody about their W, their win.
Starting point is 00:08:19 That is up to them. But just try to win once today. If you try to do that every single day, and let's just say you fail half the year, okay, 51% of the year you fail at winning the day, that's 180, let's say, three losses. You took an L 183 times. Well, guess what else you got?
Starting point is 00:08:53 182 Ws. That's a lot. So you won a lot. I don't know many people that can say I got 1802 Ws last year. But I think you could. So one of the things I enjoy doing, I enjoy making to-do list, and I enjoy looking back at old ones. I make one like about every Sunday or Monday.
Starting point is 00:09:19 here's what I here's what I need to accomplish this week and here's here's what I would here's where I'd like to get a a W and yesterday a W for me was not opening my laptop that was a W for me
Starting point is 00:09:36 because I needed a day off and I was fighting it because I had a million things to do at least it felt that way and so it was like no go play basketball force yourself go play basketball okay go like I had to, I really needed to, to take a day off before locking in for today.
Starting point is 00:09:57 Today's, to do this, well, there's a lot on here. I'll probably get four or five Ws today because I'm just trying to win the day. And I've got a flight later tonight, so I've got to plan for that flight. Then I've got a flight tomorrow. I got a plan for that flight. And there are things that I've set out to accomplish with that time so that by the time I land and I'm back with my family, I can actually be back with my family and truly be present and be home as best as I possibly can. And so yeah, every day, just try and figure out a way to win. and you may not accomplish every single one of your yearly goals,
Starting point is 00:10:50 but you'd be surprised where you'll be. You'll try and win every day and call me in 10 years. You look back and go, dude, I got, I'm a lot further than I used to be. You may not be where you want to be, but if you're just trying to win every day, you'd be surprised. Sometimes I'll tell somebody, somebody's got a new idea, whatever else. Hey man, just go buy the URL.
Starting point is 00:11:19 What? Yeah, go buy the URL. Yeah, go daddy.com, man. Yeah, it's 1199. I'll give it to you. You want to $12? I got you. Just buy the URL. Dude, I'm not making a website. I didn't say make a website.
Starting point is 00:11:32 Today's win is to go see if it's available. Tomorrow's win is buy it. You just got two wins. Mm-hmm. And it's a, and here's what winning does for people. It breeds confidence. Yeah, that's right.
Starting point is 00:11:51 You're on a role. Man, dude, I, I, man, it is available. Man, let me sleep on it, man. I found out if it was available. The next thing, man, I actually bought it. You did? All right. Well, what if you add an email to it?
Starting point is 00:12:07 Now is your name at your website. You got an email now. Oh, man, but the website, I don't know, but again, you just, you're trying to get the ball rolling. And then it's a, man, do I know somebody? Do I go with a template? A template is better than nothing. Mm-hmm. And I found that when you do see a graphic designer or some, a web developer, you know, if they see that you have something versus nothing, well, hey, they might be able to do more.
Starting point is 00:12:39 more with something than nothing. And so don't forsake humble beginnings, but continue to get a W every single day. And so, you know, day three for that person with a new idea that has gone to go daddy. So first win was seeing if it was available. You know it's available. Second, when was you bought it?
Starting point is 00:12:57 Third, when was you? Now you got an email with it. Okay, that's great. Fourth win, look up five websites that you admire. Five, five websites that you admire. You realize, at like 17 bucks on your dream and we're five wins in.
Starting point is 00:13:17 Just think about that. Now you have something to aspire to. You're just continuing to move the dial. The sixth wind might be research
Starting point is 00:13:33 hosting sites. Okay, do I want to do Wix? Do I want to do Squarespace? Do I want to do WordPress? Okay, now you're doing a little bit of homework. This is getting a little bit tougher. And now you've got to read reviews on people who, like, my websites are Squarespace. I love them.
Starting point is 00:13:50 I love Squarespace. I've had weeks before. I prefer Squarespace. That's just my own M.O. It is what it is. It's user-friendly. I can change stuff on my phone. It's great.
Starting point is 00:14:01 But you got to do the homework. But sometimes doing the homework is a task. And that can be a W. And guess what? We're still only $17 in. We haven't spent any money. We haven't signed up at Squarespace. We have, all we have right now is an email.
Starting point is 00:14:17 That's it. We haven't emailed anyone, but we have our name at this website. We are a lot further than we were a week ago. That's my point. So we might look at somebody who already has all of their stuff together, and we think it just looks perfect and it happened overnight. No, they, at some point, they had to buy a URL just like anybody else.
Starting point is 00:14:45 And so don't forsake those baby steps and get sad that your website isn't where somebody else's is. I've watched you too just coaching so many athletes or executive followers, even, you know, just other general people. And so much of your job is pushing through this fear, holding the lines of accountability, but removing the distractions. And I've heard you say so many examples of the distractions or the blocks. It really is the fear of let's take the podcast or the website examples. So many of us, which also are somebody of your client's personalities,
Starting point is 00:15:24 is we don't take action today because we want things to be so perfect by the time we want it packaged and we want it perfect, that it almost paralyzes us from action today. And I've watched and I've heard you tell so many people, you don't have to announce your website. You don't have to have an audience, right? You just have to hit record and you can build it in secret. And it's okay if it failed.
Starting point is 00:15:47 They didn't tell anybody. You know, I've watched you say that over and over. And I've watched you say that to people who have gone on weeks later to build an incredible audience and incredible following. But they were stuck in this paralysis that I can you push through. So walk us through kind of the distraction space. How do you get people to, you know, silence the push notifications on their phones or the turn off your computer, you know, how are you convincing people to recognize the distraction or push back the fear?
Starting point is 00:16:15 Do not disturb is your best friend. Do not. I mean, procrastination, I think all of us find ourselves going, man, I'd rather be doing something else, relaxing or watching TV or just scrolling on social. You know, there's so many different things that any one of us would rather be. doing. And I think notifications can be the death of greatness sometimes. And you can almost be prisoner to notifications. Right now, as we're recording this, every single one of my devices is on, do not disturb. It just is because, well, I want to be locked in here. I don't want to be
Starting point is 00:17:08 somewhere else. But if I was paying attention to those while trying to listen to you and trying to multitask, it's just not going to be as engaging. And I think it's going to be very hard for us to engage in projects and be really good at our job if we're just consistently distracted. And so I would say be very intentional with what you allow to sort of come into I turn notifications off for certain apps. There are certain apps that will send you a notification
Starting point is 00:17:47 every time somebody views your profile. You're like, dude, I don't need, like, I'm done. No, like, you're all sending me. You just want me on your app all day. Like, these aren't even, not a message. Like, hey, here's a notification. Did you know that your friend watched NBA High I like, you're like, why do I, why are you telling me? Does that make sense? It's like,
Starting point is 00:18:13 that, that's a distraction. It's not like, oh, someone commented on your thing. It's, it's, they'll, they'll try and get you, get you on there no matter what. And I love those things, but when I choose to go to them. So some specific apps, I will, I'll turn off notifications altogether, not just do not disturb. And I'll go check it when I, when I want to. So I, I think that, That's one way that I think a person can be intentional about distractions. Yeah, and you know, we have a problem as a society when Apple is truly designing it to be easier for us to turn things off. I think some of the new updates, right, to your point, you can almost control it app by app. Right now 80% of the time you and I are texting, right?
Starting point is 00:19:00 One of us is getting the response that notifications are turned off. But I think it's more than that. I think it's exactly what you had said earlier about this feeling of, confidence. I think protecting your mental space to know that you're removing anxiety so you can be present is part of the win. And to your point yesterday, if you had taken two minutes to turn on the laptop, you're sucked in, right? You just don't even know what you're opening up your laptop too. Good news, bad news, problems. But protecting that space, it really allows you to have a day of rest to walk into tomorrow, you know, when you are ready for battle and ready to greet the team
Starting point is 00:19:36 and stuff like that. Well, that's awesome. Well, thanks, Ryan. I know we're coming down to the end of time here, but I think walking away knowing every day there's opportunities for win is really kind of the theme of this chapter. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:50 Yeah, I hope that everyone is able to, every single day, figure out, okay, what's the W going to look like for me today? And go crush it.
