Starting point is 00:00:00 What's going on, my friends? Welcome back to the Ryan League podcast, where we love to keep things short and sweet for you each and every week. I recently turned 40, and I keep thinking about, man, what I wish someone would have told me like 10 years ago. And what I wish someone would continue to tell me as I think about my future, growing anything, reaching my goals, essentially. me on this lifelong attempt of trying to reach my potential. What I wish, someone would have told me 10 years ago, what I wish someone would continue to tell me is, it's all hard.
Starting point is 00:00:41 It's all hard. Sometimes we could be searching for an easy street, but if you're going to do anything significant, there's going to be something hard. In fact, I haven't really met the person who has it easy. If you're in sales, it's hard. If you're in finance, it's hard. People that are knocking on doors, going door to doors,
Starting point is 00:01:11 selling stuff, that's hard. Building a clientele from scratch, that's hard. Getting told no by people you're actually like trying to genuinely help. That's hard. Leadership? hard, being led is hard. Parenting, hard. Marriage, hard. Starting over? Hard. Staying the course? It's all hard. And I know it's like, man, I would really love a season when it's not hard. I just, I'm not sure that that season is ever going to come because hard isn't the obstacle to the life you want. hard is the price of it.
Starting point is 00:01:55 The freedom you're after, the family you want to provide for, the future you keep picturing on your drive home, none of it goes on sale. It costs full price. And the currency is hard. I mean, people all the time who are like, I just want to be at that place where it's not a grind every day, where it's easy.
Starting point is 00:02:17 And I just keep thinking, I mean, what place is that? I mean, I've met millionaires who are stressed out of their mind. I've met plenty of CEOs who can't sleep. I've met people who are at the top of their field who are dealing with problems. Most people can't even imagine. And some people look at them and go, well, man, you got the title, man, you've got the position, you've got the money. And it's like, yeah, but the problems in their life didn't go away.
Starting point is 00:02:50 They just got to upgrade it. Like when you're broke, it's like the heart is paying rent, but when you got money, the hard becomes like managing that money. When you're single, the hard is the loneliness. When you got married, the hard is compromise. You can't be selfish anymore. When you have no platform, the hard part is getting notice. But when you got the platform, the hard part is handling the criticism. Hard doesn't leave anybody. It just changes outfits. But here's the part I've really been thinking about lately.
Starting point is 00:03:30 Some hard things get harder, the longer we avoid them. Some of us aren't struggling because we chose something hard. We're struggling because we keep postponing something hard. There is a decision that you know you need to make, but you don't want to make it because it's hard. There's a conversation you know you need to have, but you keep putting it off because it's going to be uncomfortable. There's a boundary you know you need to establish. There's somebody you need to confront. There's something you need to admit. There's something you need to stop. There's something you need to start.
Starting point is 00:04:11 And we convince ourselves that by avoiding it, we're avoiding the pain. But we're not. We're just transferring the pain to our future. and usually we transfer it with interest. Interestingly enough psychologists who study procrastination have found that procrastination isn't always a time management problem. Sometimes it is an emotional regulation problem. We know it needs to be done, but doing it produces an uncomfortable feeling so we avoid the
Starting point is 00:04:48 task to make ourselves feel better right now. The problem is your present self gets the relief while your future self gets the bill. Think about how often this happens in leadership. You know someone isn't performing well, but you don't want to have the conversation, so you wait. Now, they think they're doing fine, and you wait some more. Now, everybody else on the team is frustrated because they see what you refuse to address. You wait some more. Now resentment has built up. Expectations have gone unspoken. Other people have had to compensate.
Starting point is 00:05:30 Six months later, you finally have the conversation you should have had six months ago, except now it's ten times harder. The hard conversation didn't disappear. It accumulated interest. This is true in relationships too. You can say, hey, when you did that, it hurt me today. or you can say nothing, replay it in your head for six months, attach 17 other offenses to it, start interpreting everything they do through the lens of your frustration and then have a much bigger conversation later, you're going to have to deal with it either way. The question is how expensive you want it to become.
Starting point is 00:06:15 I think one of the greatest lies we tell ourselves is, I'm not ready to make a decision. And sometimes that's true. Sometimes you need more information. Sometimes wisdom requires patience. But sometimes I'm not ready. It really means I don't like my options. But those are not the same thing.
Starting point is 00:06:36 Sometimes every option is hard. Leaving is hard. Sometimes staying is hard. Hiring is hard. So as far as far as, Firing. Firing can be just as hard as hiring. Telling the truth is hard. Living with a lie is hard. Setting the boundary is hard. Living without one is hard. Changing direction is hard. Taking another five years going the wrong direction is harder. apologizing is hard. Losing the relationship because your pride wouldn't let you apologize is harder.
Starting point is 00:07:15 Taking care of your health is hard. Dealing with the consequences of neglecting it can be harder. You don't always get to choose between hard and easy. Sometimes you're choosing between hard right now and hard a little bit later. An indecision is still a decision. decision. Keeping the wrong person is a decision. Staying in the wrong situation is a decision refusing to address the problem is a decision saying let me think about it for another year is a decision doing nothing feels passive but it produces outcomes just like doing something does so maybe
Starting point is 00:08:01 the goal isn't to avoid hard decisions maybe the goal is to become the kind of person who can make them. The kind of person who can sit in discomfort without immediately running from it, the kind of leader who loves people enough to tell them the truth, the kind of spouse who would rather have an uncomfortable conversation than allow quiet resentment to grow. The kind of person who was willing to disappoint somebody today if saying yes would create dysfunction tomorrow. Because maturity is realizing that discomfort and danger are not the same thing. Something can feel uncomfortable and still be exactly what you need to do. So stop negotiating with the price tag.
Starting point is 00:08:50 Stop looking for the discount code to success. Stop waiting for the easy season and stop sending bills to your future self that you have the courage to pay today, make the call, have the conversation, set the boundary at admit you were wrong, ask for help, change direction, end what needs to end, start what needs to start. You, my friend, are tougher than you think. You've already survived hard seasons you thought would break you and you made it through and if you made it through that, you can make it through this. Getting told no is a part of the journey. Feeling overwhelmed as a part of the journey, wondering if It's worth it is a part of the journey, my friend.
Starting point is 00:09:38 It is all hard, but you get to choose your hard. So choose the hard that builds the life you actually want. And whenever possible, choose the hard thing now. Because the hard thing you refuse to deal with today has a funny way of showing up tomorrow. And tomorrow, it usually costs more. my friends thank you so much for listening to the ryan league podcast today if today's episode inspired you don't keep it to yourself share with a friend and hey it would mean the world to me if you would take a moment to rate review and subscribe your support helps us reach even more
