And John Anick, the voice of the UFC, on what was a great card until the main event. So what happened with Connor McGregor?
Starting point is 00:00:38 We'll dig into that. I have some thoughts on NBA offseason. and stuff. We don't have many thoughts left, but LeBron will allow us to continue to have thoughts and why I think a history lesson from 2018 can inform us on a decision he probably won't make in 2026, something on Kauai, also the scary Trent contract, which I absolutely love. And we've got a little feedback. We have an announcement. And Kyle did a travel log, and we have life advice. So there's just a lot of stuff going on. And a reminder to you that we are taking emails for a full mailbag, Friday Feedback, RR at gmail.com. So get those emails in.

Starting point is 00:02:02 We are on, what, day 14 of LeBron Watch. I cannot be annoyed if I'm going to open my show with it because I'm just as guilty as everybody else of doing the updates. I've been watching TV every now and then. it's like, okay, we're going to keep doing this because let's not make any mistake. He and his team love this shit. Love it. So after the Brony James decision of 629, which I'm never going to forget that move,
Starting point is 00:02:26 where Bronty's contract was guaranteed for 26, 27, just over $2 million. All of us are kind of waiting around, right? And there's been different scenarios. There was some golden state momentum because I think a lot of people would just be so excited about how interesting that would be. And we've covered all this before. I've talked about the teams that I thought would make sense. But there's something that's happening that I think is worth revisiting
Starting point is 00:02:47 because I always love going back and looking at history to try to predict what's happening right now. Because his group, for whatever reason, and I'm, look, I like Rich Paul a lot. But I would say, and I think I even said it once the last time we talked to each other, which was just at a game, we randomly ran into each other. He's a huge college football fan, so he only wanted to talk about college football. But I had said something where I thought, like, maybe he was coming over to give me a shit about that. but he's actually really smart.
Starting point is 00:03:12 And he's like, I wasn't going to give you shit about anything. He's like, I don't care what you say. But I would say this in the past, and I'll say it again. I don't understand the obsession with just kind of wasting everybody's time. And they love doing it. They just love doing it because I think this whole we control the message thing, which they do a very good job of. I think it's like a detriment to the team that you're going to sign with
Starting point is 00:03:33 because everybody's on hold. And it's funny now. I was thinking about it this morning. I was getting ready for the show. This is now three times in six years that I've thought. felt bad for Hardin. And that would be the Kyrie situation with the Nets, the Sixers exit, and now right now, even if he's not my favorite bet to get it done in the playoffs, maybe it'll just be a full circle moment where Hardin will be over my house. We'll just hash it
Starting point is 00:03:56 all out. We'll talk about it. But right now, like, I feel bad about the situation he's in, even though there is a Cleveland move to be able to try to find a way to get LeBron at a certain number, depending on whatever that number is. If it really is the minimum, then all of this stuff is super solvable. But it also means there's all these other fan base. is trying to figure out if he's actually in play when none of us really think that he is and that it's ultimately going to be Cleveland. And it's always been Cleveland. But they just like doing this shit, which also tells me that retirement tour is going to be like unhinged.
Starting point is 00:04:23 I don't know if it's an attention-seeking thing. I don't know if there's some deficiency there. Does he go home and the kids don't listen? Does the wife not listen? You know what I mean? Like sometimes I will wonder, why is this so important to you? But I think it's just when you were a global star, that's not necessarily something that you want to walk away. from because it's probably a lot of fun to have everybody talking about you that much. Or at least
Starting point is 00:04:45 they seem to enjoy it as much. I would think this many years in, you still want to do all this shit. But yes, is the answer. They do want to do all of this shit. There's only been one LeBron move where I felt very locked in about what was going to happen. And that was when he left Miami to go back to Cleveland. That was the only time I felt like I had good information. And again, I'm telling you right now, this is just speculative based on the history. So if you go back to 2018, which is important here. That's when he went to the Lakers after leaving Cleveland. I think a lot of people after the fact made it sound like that was an automatic. But remember what the Lakers did roster-wise in some of the conversations that we had eight summers ago
Starting point is 00:05:23 when we were trying to figure out if he was going to go stay in Cleveland, go to L.A., maybe go to L.A. in a year because he was doing those year-to-year deals with Cleveland, which drove them crazy when he did the longer-term thing with more security with the Lakers. And then Philadelphia. Philadelphia was theoretically in play in 2018. So LeBron ended up going to the Lakers and the group there was Mo Wagner, who wasn't even a guy yet, they brought in Rondo. There was the KCP contract. Remember the year prior in 17, he got a one year deal at $17.7 million. You're like, wait a minute, who is his agent? They're like, oh, it's clutch. Like, hey, we'll pay KCP almost $18 million or nobody else will. For one year,
Starting point is 00:06:08 just to let you know how much we appreciate the operation you have over there. And if LeBron were to want to come to the Lakers, they also signed Lance Stevenson, Chavale McGee. They had Caruso, who wasn't a real guy yet, that was also part of it. Ingram, Lonzo, Coosma, Tyson Chandler was done. I mean, Caruso had only played 62 games the first two years of his career there in L.A.
Starting point is 00:06:33 But the thought was when it happened, you're like, that's what they're doing around him. Like that's where he wants to go. I remember too, there was like this argument. They're like, they're going to get out and run. This is most athletes LeBron's ever had. Like, they're just going to. It's like, no, they're not going to run because LeBron's the best half court player we've
Starting point is 00:06:50 maybe ever seen. So he doesn't want to run and he doesn't have to run because what he does works every single time. Anyway, so that was the collection of guys that he teamed up with. And it was pretty underwhelming. I don't know if he had been more open with the Lakers of like, I'm coming in 2018. So, like, prepare the ships if there was a possibility there. But part of the argument was that he could stay in the east because the east was weaker. They were getting to the finals.
Starting point is 00:07:19 It felt like constantly. Boston was still too young. They were ahead of schedule. And there was either the Cleveland scenario or there was the Philadelphia scenario. Philadelphia had just been eliminated in the playoffs early on, but you felt terrific about M. Bede's future back then. And yes, this is real. We all collectively felt great about Ben Simmons future. I know Fultz had only played, I think, what, 12 games or something like that, 10 games, 14 games, but he had the shoulder injury. I was reading Brett Brown quotes this morning about how much better he looked in 2018 and 2019 and working on it and was like, oh, there's some real confidence. And what was he supposed to say? He was the interim general manager at the time. All right? So there was this Embedid Simmons pairing in
Starting point is 00:08:02 2018 that felt like it was a much better opportunity than this collection that the Lakers had kind of had to piece together, likely being a roster that was not ready for LeBron. And that's exactly, I mean, it took them a little while and it took the transaction of Anthony Davis to change all this around. But the 2018 thing, you're like, man, from a basketball standpoint, like, yeah, stays in the east. Like he goes, like, if this is what really matters, why would you go to the Lakers? They have Foltz, I mentioned, Sarich. That's right. Sharich was a lottery pick two years in. He was part of the selling point as well. So it comes time to take these meetings and then what happens? This contingency from
Starting point is 00:08:42 Philadelphia flies out to L.A. meets up with Rich Paul. It's the ownership group. It's Brett Brown and LeBron doesn't show up. And you're like, well, why would they be pushing out the LeBron to Philadelphia thing? Because that's what his group was doing. Like, it wasn't like all of us just made it up. That was being pushed as a destination. And all you have to do is look at his podcast with Kellerman, which was fucking hysterical, where they were mapping out 27 scenarios of teams that they could go to.
Starting point is 00:09:18 When they whiteboarded up, I was entertained by it. It was entertaining, even if I thought it was mostly bullshit. But what we learned in 2018 is the whole Philly thing was also kind of bullshit. He didn't even show up to the meeting. And when I finally did a little bit more digging after the fact, I'm like, why was that a thing? I was like, well, Ben Simmons is a clutch client. And at the time, LeBron's group felt like keeping Philadelphia in the mix was somehow a service to them, would somehow make them look better. The perception of the Sixers would be improved because it felt like they were a real scenario for LeBron when in fact he was never going there.
Starting point is 00:10:01 And I was like, all of that because Ben Simmons is on the team and he's a client and he's important. Like that, to me, is a lot of energy wasted on a scenario that was never going to happen. Like, did you do Philly a favor or did you get their fans' hopes up? Did you waste a ton of people's time with that organization? And then I was reading again, the quotes this morning was like, hey, this shows that we're a first class organization. This shows that we're going to be in on any marquee free agent. You know, exactly what I would say if I own the team. But I'd also be like, so he's not coming.
Starting point is 00:10:32 He's not even going to talk to us. And we're supposedly in on this. Is that what's happening right now in 2026? Maxi's a clutch client. Is this just this group somehow perceiving this as a favor to an organization and be like, we'll let you think. We'll let the fans think, let everybody think, you know, even from a planning standpoint, even though like Philly's really made most of their moves already.
Starting point is 00:11:04 but we'll let you think that this is a possibility, because that's what it feels like. I personally think it's a waste of everybody's time. They clearly do not. A couple other thoughts here. The Kauai Leonard trade being frozen that happened right after we taped on Thursday. There's two very different statements here. Look, the clipper side of it is longer,
Starting point is 00:11:25 but I just wanted to touch on a couple things, because I've seen it kind of presented two different ways, at least on the Toronto side. One is that Toronto was blind to this idea that this trade could be frozen. I've read that. There's also news out there that it said Toronto would be given a heads up because the investigation in the Kauai Leonard Clippers situation is not complete, that there could be something and therefore Toronto would be on the hook for it if they're going to want to continue to do this trade. I know like everybody else, we're kind of at a point now.
Starting point is 00:11:53 We're like, hey, we thought this would be over. I don't know if it's not over because they don't have enough and this is a simple thing of like it's a lot of hearsay where we can call up, connect the dots and go clearly something weird here happen, but if you can't prove it, then nothing's going to happen. But then again, if nothing's going to happen, how's that going to go over the media for the NBA? How's that going to go over for the other NBA teams that are pissed off about this? I don't think a nothing is going to happen thing happens here. But then you also understand, too, it's like, if you think you're going to do this to us, then we're going to fight back.
Starting point is 00:12:23 And so all of this stuff has kind of worked out collectively. But then Toronto's sitting there going, hey, we just want the player. Because of all of these offseason moves, if we're talking about one, one that really moves the needle. And I don't know that you're going to get 25, 26, Kauai again in Toronto. But if you get anything close to that and taking out bad Brandon Ingram playoff possessions,
Starting point is 00:12:42 which are all of them, and pair him with this Scotty Barnes version where I've never been more bullish on Scotty Barnes. The Toronto, like now I look at them differently. But what happens if he's suspended for 30 games? I just wanted to make this point. Does it even matter? He didn't even play a full season when they won it all in 2019.
Starting point is 00:13:06 I mean, Kauai gets to do whatever he wants. The funniest part about all of this Kauai stuff is that imagine of any high profile, well, he's obviously very high profile. How about this? Imagine of an NBA star with a high profile who actually talked, was caught up in this. Kauai gets this incredible pass because he doesn't really talk to anybody. We've already accepted it. It's like, I don't know what's going on there.
Starting point is 00:13:29 Like there is perhaps no personality. in there whatsoever. If it was another kind of like front-facing dude, and this is strange to say, because he's felt like the face of a couple different franchises at different times here, but we have just accepted that he's not going to play along, and in a way it's benefited him massively throughout all of this,
Starting point is 00:13:47 because, like, other guys at his level would have to do the sit-down with somebody at ESPN. They would have to do whatever it is to kind of, like, open up a little bit, turn the page, and either apologize or lie or do whatever, but they'd have to address it. With Kauai, we've just accepted that that's never going to happen because he's just not going to do it, which in a way I kind of admire from the guy.
Starting point is 00:14:08 But if he's suspended, Toronto, sure, can go back to the Clippers and say, okay, we need to take back one of these picks. If I'm the Clippers, I would say, absolutely not. What are you going to do? Not want Kauai back in Toronto? Good luck with that. So I don't even know how the negotiation would go. But if it ends up that the news becomes, well, why is he suspended, which will become its own
Starting point is 00:14:27 debate on whether or not we feel that that's the right thing to happen. if somebody's putting an offer in front of you, again, I don't know if this is a, it'll be interesting to see what the punishment is because it'll be like, I can't believe it's that little. And it's like, yeah, but there's a big difference between what we can talk about and then somebody can actually prove to punish one of their partners. But part of this is that they feel like the NBA's investigation feels like the Kauai was complicit in this somehow.
Starting point is 00:14:56 Him getting suspended for a few games probably is. Isn't that different from what the plan would be if he were totally clear and getting a contract extension from Toronto? Because he wasn't going to play 75 anyway. One last thought on some of the stuff from this weekend. The Gary Trent contract, this is one of the all-time worst contracts in NBA history. But everybody knew that it was coming. 64 million over four years. All guaranteed.
Starting point is 00:15:24 When I saw the headline, I was like, is there anyway? But what had happened, as everybody knows, there was some. some deals that were a little below market level. And there were other people going like, I cannot wait to see what that Gary Trent number comes in at. Because then he had a terrible season. And he got four years 64 million. And if there was some sort of understanding
Starting point is 00:15:52 that you'd be taken care of later on, which, believe it or not, does happen in this league, Milwaukee's run of, and look, they were stuck. Their guy didn't want to be there. As an aside, Bucks Twitter, you guys can just stay in your fucking lane of trying to tell me Dane Lillard is actually not bad on defense, telling the world that it's an ESPN, Shams creation that Yannis wants to leave. And then when I laughed at the Trent contract, I had like real guys on Bucks Twitter trying to somehow like critique something else as if that was like a good comeback to laughing at this contract. And I'm laughing at it because
Starting point is 00:16:37 I think a lot of people knew that this was going to happen. But once that major domino falls and you were sitting, I think this run for the last few years of the bucks is a lesson of the next team that's like when your guy starts dipping his toe into wanting to leave, get it over with, especially once you've won an NBA championship. Because the domino effect of all of these deals, these trades, the dame waving, the money spent on Turner. It'd be nice if they hit on a few more of the draft picks. But this is, and again, a lot of it has to do with what am I, if you're John Horst, like, what am I supposed to do?
Starting point is 00:17:12 Give up. Like, I'm trying to figure out any way to salvage is reinvented around Yanis the entire time. But that's always been my biggest issue with this deal and looking at the heat package back for it. I mean, that's the other thing, too. Look at all the guards that they've brought in. They have Rollins.
Starting point is 00:17:28 they have Porter, they traded for Lavert, they have her hero in the trade. And then it's like, yeah, let's make sure we get Gary Trent 64 million guaranteed. How about you do this in the future? If Gary Trent's going to walk for a better deal in the minimum, let them. You're going to be okay. He has the new head coach of the Orlando Magic. It is Sean Swinney joining us on the podcast. Thanks for doing this, man.
Starting point is 00:17:55 How are you? Great. Thanks for having me. Okay, so what's it like interviewing for head coach? job. What do you do to prepare for something like that? It depends on the one, but basically you're studying the team, you're studying what they played like, what you think you could do with their roster, what changes you would make. And then in some situations, you're trying to look at like who was the previous head coach and what did he do that the guys interviewing you didn't
Starting point is 00:18:27 like and trying to make sure you don't hit on those things. But yeah, it's pretty exhaustive. Orlando was actually the most thorough interview that I had. Why is that? Nine and a half hours long. And they did the best job. Jeff and those guys did the best job of when they asked a question, they had follow-up questions that were like layered. So there was more depth that you had to give in terms of what you were talking about, hey, this is what I think about, you know, what schemes would be good offensively? And then they'd ask why and could you describe different things within it? So it was by far the most thorough of any of the ones that I did. I imagine when somebody like you, I mean, coaches are prep freaks to begin with, but you start
Starting point is 00:19:18 your NBA career as a video coordinator. And we just know that that is all about preparation. It's preparation for every single of the present. So I am Always kind of like from a distance going, you must over prepare in a way where you're like, I want to have everything covered for every single. You probably learn those teams in preparation for the interviews better than you've ever learned them ever going up against them in an actual game on another staff. Yeah, yeah. And then, yeah, definitely.
Starting point is 00:19:44 And then sometimes after it's like, why the hell did I spend all that time doing that? Yeah. Okay. So then specific to Orlando, what do you think sold them on? you. Well, I thought we came into a very, you know, aligned in terms of how we saw the team just naturally, you know, I think the big thing that I looked at was how do we take what has been successful in some ways. And obviously, Franz getting hurt last year, a lot of people would point to that as to why the magic potentially didn't get through that first round. But how do we
Starting point is 00:20:21 take that and build upon it, trying to be specific in certain things? that we feel like we can measure and improve upon. But I think just at the end of the day, you know, I wanted to go into it really prepared, thorough in terms of how I looked at the team, but try to communicate my thoughts clearly and concisely, make sure that I knew what I was talking about because clear and concise doesn't matter if you sound like an idiot.
Starting point is 00:20:48 But just in general, try to make sure that I was really locked in on what I thought needed to be done and looking at the strengths and the weaknesses, not just, you know, oh, we got to do this differently. This is a podcast that loves this Orlando roster, okay? We are pro magic guys on this pod. I'm with you.
Starting point is 00:21:10 I really like that front office, the drafting record, like we love Paolo. We'll get to that as well. So I think there are times throughout the season of doing this pod. We do it three days a week. We do a ton of NBA where you're like, man, I'm so frustrated by Orlando.
Starting point is 00:21:25 What do you, because that's because of the talent that you're walking into. So I know it can be a little delicate because, you know, the coaching world is a small fraternity, but what do you think needs to be solved with this group to get them in a position where we don't have a repeat of what happened last year? Well, you know, to me, the big things is just there's got to be an activation of all five guys a little bit more often here. So whether that's playing with more pace and, getting into things quicker, being more clear in our spacing, making sure that we make the right
Starting point is 00:22:03 decision. I think just in general, the more that we hunt baskets and not the ball, we're going to be in better shape. And then defensively, this team a couple years ago was rock solid at the top of the league and getting back to that, I think, is a big deal too. You know, like a good defense travels. And, you know, if you've got a great defense, you're going to put yourself in a position regardless of the night.
Starting point is 00:22:24 You know, the game at the end of the day is get more shots, get better shots than your opponent. And so if we can get to that, which I think we can, we're going to be in good shape. In the past, sometimes you look at a team and say, okay, well, that's a lot of on-ball guys. There's only one basketball, you know, whatever. There's too many overlaps there. And now I feel like the game is shifted here where it's like there's nothing better than to have four, sometimes even five guys that if they have a ball in their hands, they can escape with it. And when I think about Palo, Franz, Bain, Black, you know, even named some other guys here where it's a lot of players
Starting point is 00:22:58 that probably like to initiate on ball. And I see it as a positive, but it's almost like they have to understand that all being good on ball doesn't mean taking turns. All being good on ball means like we should just get stuck less. And I felt like it was a very turn-based offense now for a couple of years. Yeah, I think, you know, one of my mentors, a guy named Tim Gergerich, used to always say, whoever has the ball is the point guard.
Starting point is 00:23:28 So if you pass it to the center, he's got to be a decision maker. If you pass it to this guy on a throwhead, he's got to be a decision maker. And I think that's more applicable than ever in today's game, that whomever has the ball, because these guys are so skilled, a lot of times they can create. But once you create, you've got to make a good decision, whether it's to shoot it or pass it. And I think that's something that, like you said, they can escape more. But the best teams I've had been part of coaching, we've had a lot of guys that could all go get buckets and get themselves shots. And then if there's two guys guarding them, it's past the damn ball to your teammate.
Starting point is 00:24:06 The shooting numbers have been a problem. That's why there was such an emphasis on acquiring Bain. And I think Bain was a home run last year. Like they, I'm sure, whether it's publicly or privately, been like, yeah, we know we gave up the picks. Who knows what they'll end up being. like we'll do that deal all over again. Can the shooting numbers, well, I guess I'd look at it this way. How much do you think the shooting numbers suffer from guys that are average to blow
Starting point is 00:24:29 average shooters versus some of the shot selection that you've watched from this group? I mean, shot selection is always where it starts. You know, if you're not shooting a good percentage, it's either you're a bad shooter, you're taking bad shots, just as a general rule. So the more we can create good looks, the better we're going to be. And I think there's definitely some room to improve there. Yeah. Yeah, I think you're being nice about it because I think they would run the clock late
Starting point is 00:25:01 and it would be a lot of like, I guess I got to shoot this now. And so I'm not saying this is Golden State from peak Golden State years from the collection of shooters that you have. But it just was an offense that, you know, like I said, yeah, We're sitting here. I mean, I'm sharing the frustration with you. And you're like, hey, I wasn't around back then. You mentioned running.
Starting point is 00:25:21 Will this group run? Because you would think on paper it would want to run. Well, when we were in Dallas, we were a top 10 pace team. The year I was doing the offense, and Luca Donchich was our point guard. So if Luca can be in the top 10 in pace, I think just about anybody can. And obviously his skill set is the best offense player of all time or whatever thereabouts. But yeah, we can run. We can get the ball up the floor.
Starting point is 00:25:49 We can get over by 21 on the shot clock as a general rule here. Yeah. We can do that. Because, you know, I think like there have been times the past where LeBron would be with a group. It's something I talked about even at start of this podcast today. And it's like, hey, you know, get out, run, get young people. It's like, well, LeBron is so good at dissecting everything that's happening that he actually wants to control the half court. That Luca number surprised me.
Starting point is 00:26:08 Because, again, it's somebody who's like, what do you want me to do? Just let me get the ball. I will figure it out. And then I'm still going to give you a great option the entire time. And I think Palo on ball, that's what I've loved about him so much, is that you've got this massive human being that can play like a point card. I don't think he actually wants to be, I don't think, I don't look at him as somebody who's like, I just want to have the ball all the time.
Starting point is 00:26:29 But I think he's so good in some of these two-man mismatches that he can work himself into. I wonder if it's hard to break him of the habit of wanting to dissect what's happening to half court instead of being like, hey, dude, you getting downhill with Anthony Black and some of these other guys? like that's where we want to start the position. If we don't have it, we pull it out, and then we have plenty of time to run something in the half court. Yeah, I think, you know, how you run, you know this,
Starting point is 00:26:53 like it's not just to get fast break layups. It's to give yourself more time if you don't get that. You know, everybody would love to, hey, touch the paint, quick, score the basketball, or touch the paint, throw it through an open guy, swing it, it, shot. But when you don't have that and you need to create an advantage, you need to use whatever actions you like early in a possession to create an advantage. If you're starting it at 14 on the clock or 16 on the clock and it's slow moving and now there's a switch and an ISO and you only give yourself X amount of time,
Starting point is 00:27:26 it gets harder. I mean, that's why you see in the playoffs, that's why with the spurs, we pressed every possession. Take more time. Start your possession later. Now you've got to work against, you know, a physical-ass defense. and we got, you know, big fellow behind us, you know, but that's why you're trying to get into things quicker, you know, like oftentimes in the playoffs, we talk about adjustments
Starting point is 00:27:48 and what are we going to do differently. And a lot of times that it is starting with, we have to play faster, get into our stuff sooner. So I think that's, you know, that's a big deal just in general. Is that disconnect just, like, I think that's why coaches are always frustrated because you just know, like, if I could get this much more effort out of you, some of our problems be fixed, and then you know as a player, too,
Starting point is 00:28:09 It's like, yeah, I'm tired, man. I'm tired. And I'm not going to be able to do this every single possession of the way you want me to be able to do it. How do you hammer that message in a way that feels satisfying? Well, I mean, you just hit it, though. I think it starts with we got to get in shape, you know, and every team has to go through some version of that. You've got to be in shape enough to do it.
Starting point is 00:28:30 But I think there's, you know, how many guys you play is part of it. You know, if you're going to shorten the rotation, you know, a short rotation, it's going to be harder to tell guys to run every time. it's going to be harder to tell them to give max effort. So some of it's on us as coaches to make sure we make good decisions as to how we use our rotations, how many guys we play. But then there's a level of you got to teach it, you got to emphasize it, and then sometimes you've got to demand it.
Starting point is 00:28:55 What's it been like getting to know Palo? It's been good. Yeah, I didn't know him, but I knew a number of people around him prior to it. You know, Mitch Johnson, who I just worked for as a Seattle guy, went to the same high school, Spencer Hawes, who I coached, my man Yehaws, he's Seattle guy, he knew Paulo. So I got a little bit of an understanding from those guys prior to it. And since getting the job, it's been really, really, really good. I went up to Seattle a couple weeks ago, spent some time up there, working out with him, seeing how things were going up there. So I've liked it a lot. He's a smart
Starting point is 00:29:30 kid. He's serious about how he wants to be a great player and a great winner in this league. And he's in great shape and working his ass off, which is important. It feels like you've been, I don't know if luck's the right way, but different stats you've been on, like the number one guy gets it in a lot of your stops. Is that something that you think with your background you can get through to Powell and being like, hey, and maybe I'm assuming too much. You're like, hey, Franz is nasty. Baines nasty as well.
Starting point is 00:30:06 but I guess when you know the number one overall pick in the early part of Paulo's career and kind of like, all right, what's that next step going to look like for him? Do you think he's had enough seasoning in the league to understand what he is tasked with beyond just getting buckets? Well, he got no choice now.
Starting point is 00:30:24 But I think, no, all those guys that you just mentioned, like there's a lot of high-level players on this team that are serious about winning. And, you know, as it pertains to Paulo and his teammates, You know, my job is to give them organization, structure, clarity in their roles. You know, those guys are like the main characters in this movie. I'm a supporting character. And we're all essential to have a good movie made, but I've got to do a good job.
Starting point is 00:30:51 And our staff has to do a good job, you know, why we brought in guys like Greg Buckner and Joe Prunty still here, DJ Baker, like those guys. Like, we have to do a great job of making sure that we communicate clearly what we want them to do. play and coaching a style that lends itself to their talents. We mentioned you start as a video coordinator. We are, I love PJ Carlissimo going all the way back. He comes on the pod all the time. Nobody's quicker to invite you to a dinner. Give me your favorite PJ story from having to prepare something for him.
Starting point is 00:31:27 Or maybe it's just something else. It doesn't even have to be that. We love PJ Carlisimo stories. PJ was the best because, So Popeye Jones and I were on the staff. Popeye's on the staff here. And we were preparing the game plan for playing the Knicks. I think it was on MLK Day.
Starting point is 00:31:45 And we were in there all day. And it was the year the Knicks were good. Jay Kidd was there. They were the two seed. They were rolling. Like the garden was back. All that stuff. And we were preparing.
Starting point is 00:31:56 And so PJ makes us meet with him. And we walk into the conference room and he's got 30 box scores laid out on the table. And he's like a beautiful. mind and they're like highlighted and circled and we went through the game plan for like I mean noble like two hours and he's telling us it won't work it won't work it won't work it won't work and finally goes all right well if it doesn't work it's your asses and then the next day he went in and sold it to the team like it was his and so like he would do that where like you had to defend your answers all the time. And if you did, he'd roll with it. Do you look at what you've done
Starting point is 00:32:39 and why you've stood out? Like, you've been talked about where I think there are some teams, like I think the Lakers have done a good job with this with their staff, where it's almost a football matchup specific game plan, where I think there's other staffs that are still, even in 2026, it's like, hey, this is who we are, roll the ball out. This is kind of what we want to do. Do you think there is room to be more game-to-game-specific with game plans with the way the NBA goes about it? Yeah, well, I think as long as your system and your base level is sound, you can add layers to it, you know, more likely going game-to-game. I think so. To me, the biggest thing now is the ability to lock in on player tendencies game-to-game.
Starting point is 00:33:24 You have to be great at that. you have to be able to understand who these guys are on a nightly basis. But then I do think there's room to adjust your schemes based on who you're playing that night, but your foundation has to be really strong. So early in the year, you may not be able to do as much as you could late in the year. But yeah, you've got to do that to a certain extent. Like you just talked about a lot of teams have numerous guys who can go get a bucket. So you've got to be really sound in that.
Starting point is 00:33:54 But yeah, it starts with your system and your foundation. then your game plan's got to be rock solid, and then you have to know the tendencies and be able to execute against them. Do you think you'll ever watch that finals again? No. I don't lose a lot of sleep over games. I've lost a lot of sleep over that series.
Starting point is 00:34:16 Yeah, not fun. But thanks for bringing it up. I have more thoughts. Please, let's dive in. We're already here. The right answer and a simple answer would be if I ask you what happened, you just go, Jalen Brunson happened. So I would accept that as an answer.
Starting point is 00:34:33 If I wanted another answer, what happened? I think a few things. One, I think there's a little attrition having to go through the previous series. Two, bad luck. You know, they told me if the games were like 46 minutes or whatever, we would have won 4-1. Jalen obviously had a monster game in that last one. You know, coached him in Dallas, like, happy for him, kind of.
Starting point is 00:35:03 But, like, I think there's some of that. And I think we just made more mistakes than we had made in the previous series. And you could maybe say some youth to that, but, like, you don't do what you did and just all of a sudden become young. The one thing I think that's a little different in the first. finals than the other rounds is when you have to do media in the finals you have to answer questions even when you've played poorly or struggled and you don't have to do that in the previous rounds. You know, those guys like all year, if they have a longer media session, it's because they've done something good. Like you don't have 15 minutes of answering like, why didn't you make this play?
Starting point is 00:35:45 Are you too young? Are you guys on the same page? What do you think about coaches' decision? So I think that's like a different deal and can obviously contribute to it. But then like you said, Jalen Brunson happened is probably a good answer to. And OG's ass. Yeah, I mean, OG, I'll never. Like, I'm already ready to apologize if I'm critical of them next year at any moment during the season because of what I think of him now as a player.
Starting point is 00:36:13 You know, there's like a whole, you know, there were things with OG that I loved. It's like, hey, this guy would fit on any kind of team. And then you're like, oh, is he always available? and you look at the kind, then it's just like, okay, never mind. Like, don't worry about the little things with him because there's, he was just a monster, all playoffs and a huge difference in that series. And he's like elite on ball, elite in different areas on defense. I mean, when he was in Toronto, I think we were in Detroit.
Starting point is 00:36:38 He gave us 50 one time. I mean, you know, like some guys, they're far more talented than the opportunity they get every day and you need those guys to be okay with that if you want. want to win, you know, like this dude's a good player who when he was called upon was ready to roll, you know, I mean, he's impressive, man. He's really good. All right. So I love that you said the thing about the young thing because that drives me crazy a little bit too. It's like, well, then if they're young, they lose game seven at OKC. So, but there did seem to be like a comfort gap there at times. And maybe that's just as simple
Starting point is 00:37:16 is watching the lead go. I want to throw something at you because it was something I picked up on and you can tell me if I'm crazy if I'm wrong because I've been wrong plenty of times. But I didn't like Wembe Nyama's touches. I thought there were long stretches where the guards got away from him and the reason I feel comfortable saying that to you is that after you would have a timeout, whether you call the timeout or just a break in the action and then the spurs had the ball, it seemed like there was a concerted effort from Mitch and the staff to get to the ball, handler and say, hey, look, we're going to get Wemby deeper on the catch. We're going to get something better. But like, the ball has to get back to Wemba on this one. And I noticed it
Starting point is 00:37:54 enough to go, okay, well, then the staff is seeing what I'm seeing. And whether it's younger perimeter players having Wembe too far away and then ignoring that he could still be an option, maybe Wembe getting lined up too far away one-on-one with the ball into a crowd of all sorts of things, did you feel like during that series that, and it's not being critical necessarily the guards, but there were too many stretches where Wembeyanama perhaps wasn't optimized whether it was touch or where the touch was happening. Yeah, I think there was definitely some of that. And the other thing, too, is like the guy doing the defense in New York, Brendan O'Connor,
Starting point is 00:38:30 like he's been in the NBA a long time. He's a good coach. Like, he knows what he's doing. So some of it was what New York is trying to do to make it tough for him to get those touches as well. And I think that's why, like, you saw Mitch doing a good job of like, all right, here's how we can get him the ball with. more space more often.
Starting point is 00:38:48 But and then part of it is like as a player, you know, showing those guys and trying to help them find where can you get him the ball or when someone was missed, not just him, but just in general what the right play to make was. But yeah, I think, you know, there's some accuracy there for sure. Last one, and I promise we'll get back to it because you're like, okay, dude, I didn't realize this is a Spurs interview. I want to end in a positive here.
Starting point is 00:39:11 Dylan Harper from day one to Dylan Harper in the finals. What was that like being in a front row seat? Well, one, you could see how immensely talented he was when he got there or when like June into September, like even his first summer league game. Like this dude wants it. You know what I mean? Like he's got a chance to be like a big time player. As the year went on, he did a really good job of grasping
Starting point is 00:39:44 what he needed to do to be on the floor every night on a good team. And he's got a level of pedigree to him that he's like a winning player. You know, like sometimes dudes are like, I want to be rookie of the year. I wish I was on a team that stinks. Well, his alternative was like everybody is talking about you in June. It's like, this dude's the man. You know, so like when the two guys and Charlotte and Dallas are doing whatever they're doing watching games, you're balling out on the biggest stage. Like, you know, there's a,
Starting point is 00:40:20 there's a sacrifice that he made, but like there's a reward individually with how, how well he played at the opportunity he got. And that wasn't like a big thing for him. He just, like, I'm good with it, you know, which is really impressive for a 19 year old or 20 year old, whatever he is. Yeah, I, look, I can't even put a ceiling on who he is. Andy, Andy 6-6-220. He's huge. He's a big kid. Like, he's big and strong already.
Starting point is 00:40:51 Yeah, and there's this comfort to all of it, too. And that's, I think, like, on top of everything you just said, to be that comfortable where I'm like, hey, get it back to the rookie in the NBA finals when I'm watching you and some possessions. And I go, when have you ever said that? Like, I was, I think, four when Magic did it in the finals. So it wasn't like I was yelling at the TV at four years. old. It's just not supposed to happen.
Starting point is 00:41:15 You know, and the other thing, too, like you talked about in the playoffs, like a lot of times when young guys struggle, they ease up or they kind of slow up. They're not as aggressive. And like, I think that was one of the things that those guys did a great job of is like, like my man, PJ Tucker would say, like, you've got to be more fearless. You got to be more aggressive. Like, you can't go, you've got to go harder. You got like, you can't ease up. You got to gets your stuff right. You got to make sure you're prepared. You got to execute upon what you're asked to do. But he embodied like, you don't slow up now. Now's the time to get going. And I think that's part of the reason why you see that success for a young guy. Like there was no easing off the gas
Starting point is 00:41:57 because I'm not sure what to do. Two quick things we finish here. If there's one thing, like one thing that you feel like you need to hammer this group in Orlando and just like at our core we have to be this. What is it? Team. Team. Team. We've got to be big time in all the team aspects. There's a lot of invisible plays that have to be made. And I think just in general for our group, you know, like the measure of greatness in a team sport is what you do to elevate your teammates.
Starting point is 00:42:25 This is a team game. And it doesn't mean that you can't have big time individual success, but team is where this starts. Head coach now. Worked the officials a little bit here. Have you thought about, sometimes an assistant's like, I can get away with anything here, sort of, and then maybe they'll tell us to go back. Have you thought about your demeanor, how much you're going to work
Starting point is 00:42:49 the officials? Because it's going to be, it's you now on the sideline. Yeah. I remember asking Will Hardy about this. It was like, did it take you a few games, you realized like you could get more mad at the officials? He was like, yeah, it was like, it was kind of funny. I was like, oh, maybe I'll start getting on these guys a little bit. Have you thought about like, I want to be like this? although you probably can't decide to be any other way than you actually are. Yeah, I mean, I haven't put a whole lot of thought into it, but I remember during one of the COVID seasons when I had to fill in for J.Kid, and Marquise Chris was like going after an official when we had Marquise Chris on our team.
Starting point is 00:43:25 And I looked at him and I said, Marquise, this guy doesn't respect me at all. How the hell do you think he's going to respect you? Play the game. And I forget who it was, the refliction. He's like, you're right. I don't. So, all right. I'm going to just worry about my team.
Starting point is 00:43:46 And then we'll talk to you guys as we see necessary. What an unnecessary added piece of commentary from that official. But I almost feel like I can guess who that would be. But I love that we got a Marquis Christi's Chris shout in there because I loved him in the draft. And then. And a great kid. He got injured for us at you. He was doing a good job.
Starting point is 00:44:08 But yeah, that was the year we went to the Western Finals and lost to Golden State. But yeah, I was like, yeah, let's just play here. Like,
Starting point is 00:44:15 we can go get a rebound. And then we got a Spencer Hoshana, who has a high approval rating down here in the South Bay. John, congrats, man. I know it's a dream come true and I'm thrilled you with this group
Starting point is 00:44:28 and we can't wait to start watching the magic this year. No, thanks a lot. I appreciate it. He is the voice of the UFC. He is a friend of mine. It's John Anick. Good to see you again.
Starting point is 00:44:40 I was actually describing you earlier today as one of my best friends. Certainly my best friend in the industry. If I ever need advice for something contractual or otherwise, I'm coming to you. But yeah, it's great to see you. And such is life, right? UFC Freedom 250, sickest thing I've ever seen in my life. And then maybe this weekend, one of the sadder things I've seen, you know, in pro sports. So up and down, Evan Flo, here we are.
Starting point is 00:45:01 It was a great card. And then the main event happened. So let's just dig into it right there. Connor goes with the flying leg kick, which we actually saw him practicing backstage. It was clearly, he was like, I'm going to come out and try to do something here, Holloway's all over it,
Starting point is 00:45:16 and then as soon as he lands, the knee, everybody's kind of like, why is he falling down? Like, what's going on here? So take us through your vantage point of everything that was happening. Well, there's a lot of speculation as to whether or not there was a pre-existing injury for Connor McGregor.
Starting point is 00:45:31 That does not appear to be the kid. case. I think he just put a lot of pressure on that knee with what Joe Rogan would probably describe as a wayward decision to throw a switch roundhouse kick right out of the shoot. But Connor thought he could execute it and he couldn't and obviously he paid the ultimate price. Now, what type of decisions has he made over the last five years that maybe didn't put his body in an optimal position to compete in mixed martial arts after a layoff like this? I don't know, right? but fair i think that's fair five years off i don't know that he's been the picture of fitness every
Starting point is 00:46:04 right he's of footage that we've seen but go ahead right and you know he has a titanium rod in one leg and i was wondering aloud did he put in 16 weeks of hell to have a crazy cardiovascular base for a 25 minute fighter was he maybe looking at this as an eight or 10 minute affair to go in there try to get the job done as he often does quickly and get out of there you know one thing i said on the broadcast max holloway has more title fight time than any fighter in UFC history, almost nine hours in championship fights in that fucking octagon for Max Holloway. Nine hours.
Starting point is 00:46:36 Nine hours. Of just title fights. Just title fights. You're the best. That's such an incredible stat. Well, is that not an advantage? Right. I mean, you know, anyone who's like, oh, man, I bet on Connor.
Starting point is 00:46:47 I don't know what to tell you intellectually, right? I mean, I don't know how. I mean, look, I think all of us, I've been lucky enough to be in that building for a Connor fight and when you're in Vegas and it's just lined with Irish lads already arrested and cuffs in the hallways, you know, that that fight that I went to 10 years ago, I'm like, it is still one of the greatest events that I've ever experienced, but it was Pete Conner. So I think anybody that loves this sport, you're always enamored with the idea of him, right? Even though it just, this is not what happens.
Starting point is 00:47:24 You don't get to take five years off. Right. And I don't know that he was in fight mode. the entire time when you're older fighting sucks and so i'm like everybody else going like is there any chance is there any chance but i i don't know that any sane person is thinking like he has set himself up for a really competitive and look he the credit to him is that he's like all right i'll take on max like i'll go at max you're like this is brutal and so even with all of that i didn't really necessarily like his chances um and you know look i say i don't want to get ahead of ourselves here and say like Max is like, hey, we need to run it back, which I thought was respectful.
Starting point is 00:48:01 That was the least approved statement I've ever heard. Yeah. No one in the building was like, yeah, dude, let's do it. Let's run it back. Just silence. Well, I think it's hard, right? It's hard for us as commentators to come up with the proper words. And I think for Max, you know, he comes over to the booth and sort of gives me one of these hands
Starting point is 00:48:21 in the air. And I don't really know how to respond to Max even physically in that moment. You know, there's so much to unpack here. Connor McGregor could have asked Dana White and Hunter Campbell for Michael Chandler, a fight that a lot of us felt as though the ship had sailed on, but it would have been a more winnable fight. At least on paper, Conne McGregor might have been a two-to-one favorite against Michael Chandler, but if he still tried this move, he could have gotten injured,
Starting point is 00:48:44 and this would have been even more disastrous. But I agree with you, right, to fight Max Holloway, who's been in it the entire time. Max has been at the top championship training camp, one after the other, the entire time that Connor has been doing whatever he has been doing. Now, the optimist in me would actually submit to you that if this is a meniscus, and even if it is an ACL, that Connor could come back for one. And certainly if Nate Diaz was the opposition, that's a competitive fight that maybe Connor would be favored in.
Starting point is 00:49:11 But what exactly is the goal here? And what are Connor McGregor's goals? I think he was back for the right reasons. I think he's found sobriety. I think he's clean. But I just, I don't know exactly what we're trying to do here. And if this is a torn ACL, you know, maybe this is the final nail in the coffin. a disappointing conclusion it would be. So you are 100% on board with like that this was not a preexisting condition. Well, I mean, I'd like to give the athlete and the head coach the benefit of the doubt. I can lean into his warm up in the back that look pretty good. I can certainly look at the visual that we showed, not for speculative purposes on the broadcast
Starting point is 00:49:48 and see him in the inspection zone and it's not a great visual. You know, when I saw him at the ceremonial way in, putting his sneakers on, And you can tell Connors been out of the game because we don't even take our fucking pants off anymore when we weigh in. That's ceremonial. You've already weighed in in the morning, right? Most of the athletes don't even de-robe like that, but he's so out of practice. He takes his pants off, then goes to put his sneakers back on. And I'm thinking he's putting his sneakers back on for the stair down.
Starting point is 00:50:11 But, you know, maybe he's doing that because of an injury. I don't think it was pre-existing. I just think, hey, man, like, I went for a run in Vegas when I was out there, and I was really sore. So the next day I stretched and I hurt my shoulder stretch. Now, I'm 10 years older than him, but you know, when you get older, it doesn't get easier. And in this sport, it's absolutely ruthless. Yeah, look, that part of it makes sense. I think everybody wants everything to have like another layer of conspiracy no matter what,
Starting point is 00:50:39 which is also why there's so many times there's something sketchy may be happening. And I'm just so desensitized to the audience going, it can't just be disappointing, right? It can't just be disappointing. The angle, the torque that he's putting on that knee with that move, I think you've made a great point there that maybe he was just like, this isn't going 25 minutes. So like, I'm coming out like a madman. And Connor like is always up for the fight too, which, you know, you have to throughout his career be like, this guy is ready for it. He isn't just one of Dana's all time favorites because of the money side of it.
Starting point is 00:51:13 He's one of Dana's favorites because we've had Dana on in the past. Dana's like, hey, that guy is ready to go. Like of all the managing that goes into all of these egos and guys going like, I want to be a badass, but I kind of to have my own path to bad assism. Yeah. You know, like Connor has never really been one of those guys that is looking to avoid anything. And so, look, you've been around this sport for such a long time far closer than I ever
Starting point is 00:51:39 have. But if there's one constant, is that old fighters don't really stop. So we can sit here and say that there's no market for him because of this. I just don't think that'll be true. Yeah, he's not going to stop. He's not going to stop. All right. So go ahead.
Starting point is 00:51:53 He'll fight on Netflix at some point in time, right? one fight left on his UFC contract, he'll be in big fights, and maybe there would be a boxing match down the line with Floyd Mayweather. I'm certainly not expected nor hopeful that we're going to see any of that noise. I still want to see if he can compete in mixed martial arts at a somewhat high level. I do believe that if you look at the top 25 in the Welterweight division, for example, maybe you could find a fight there for him, you know? But yeah, I believe that he has it within him. His competitive spirit is such that he's going to be back. The only visual that really gave me pause in terms of conspiracy theorists out there or speculation,
Starting point is 00:52:28 and I'm sure you would agree with this. When he hit the tunnel and went through his usual walkout in the motions, he didn't have that usual look in his eye. He wasn't smiling, looking like he's on the fringe of just lunaticism. You know what I mean? And even when he did the billionaire strut in the octagon, he didn't have that usual look in his eye. Now, that could be because it's been a long time, that could be because he wasn't necessarily budding, with confidence in the matchup,
Starting point is 00:52:54 or it could be because, you know, he got injured, either in the back or during training camp, who knows, but for people to lean all the way into the fact that he went to a fucking healing center in California
Starting point is 00:53:01 and say, oh, he must have been injured, right? You know, there were a lot of people who felt like Beton on Max Holloway was an all-time great investment whether Connor was injured or not. If you were a writer,
Starting point is 00:53:14 you could talk about Connor passing the public baton to Patty the Batty, you know, in this moment. Maybe there's too many similarities you know, size, there's some personality similarities there that you get into it. And Patty, after the Gaichi fight, like, it was a loss, but I think collectively everybody
Starting point is 00:53:36 felt better about Patty after that fight. And for him to go in and kind of recapture his momentum side by side with Connor, like, that felt like maybe, like, again, if I were right, I don't even know if it's real or not, but I would be writing to that idea that this Connor thing is now totally over, but it isn't from a fighting standpoint. But the hopefulness that you have about a Connor moment to then Patty kind of recapturing the imagination of everyone in there that seemed to be so behind him and how dominant he was with that early choke. I love the way you tied that together. Patty Pimlet's the man. He could have come to the UFC when he was 21.
Starting point is 00:54:14 He could have come when he was 23 years of age. But he, and this is a direct quote, wanted to be a proper athlete when he got here. And I think because of his persona and his ability to orate and captivate the masses by just being himself and being, you know, comedically great, you know, people lose sight of the martial artist and just how good a grappler he is, right? There's so many guys who don't know their way around a submission, and he has tons of them and just submitted maybe the most hardened guy in the division and choked him unconscious. So I love the total package. He, I think, was a superstar before Saturday night, but this is going to take. it just to an entirely different level. And for him, I think it's really just about the championship.
Starting point is 00:54:57 And if he can get the championship, interim or otherwise, right? Then you're talking about a kid who can defend his title in Liverpool. And then you really are talking about global super startup. So it was a huge night for Patty. He's a great human being. And yeah, he's gone about a lot of things the right way. But it's been a huge year for him learning lesson against Gaichi to do what he did with that showcase with that many eyeballs on him.
Starting point is 00:55:20 he's the man dude he's got a lot of support from not just you know the fans but me and a lot of people on the staff as well um is it weird when they want to come over and celebrate with you because there's no other sport like that really yeah so it's interesting because i'm a promoter and not a journalist right and my biggest initiative is try to promote these athletes humanize them make people at home care and it's always interesting when people say and i always quote rick petino you know larry Byrd's not walking through that door. Kevin McHale's not walking through that door, right? They say, oh, you know, you got no Connor, Israel, Al-Aisandia's on the way out, John Jones.
Starting point is 00:55:55 And then Alex Poetan Pada walks through the door and becomes the biggest superstar in UFC history. Or Ilya Topoli becomes a massive star, right? There's always another star. But yeah, it's unique, right? Like, maybe the greatest moment of my career was when Amanda Nunes retired and came and kissed me on the forehead, right? That's maybe the best thing that's ever happened to me because she's the consensus greatest of all time. And it was just, I think, an appreciation for us promoting her and doing right by her. And, but yeah, it is unique.
Starting point is 00:56:24 You know, there's no rooting interest. You know, I've had to call, I think, five or six of Daniel Cormier's fights before he retired. So, you know, long past sort of having to check the friendship at the door. But certainly I have a far closer personal relationship with Patty Pimplet than Benoit d'A. So, yeah, we're going to stick out. We want the high five, you know. Rogan says we're professional fans. I think that's really what we are.
Starting point is 00:56:46 I was not critical of it. I actually just think it's, I think it's cool. I think it's a smaller family. Yeah, it is that. You're part of this road show. And honestly, like, you guys are so good on the call that, you know, I don't even know that it was even brought up as a thing. I just thought it was an incredible camera angle because in the middle of you calling out the moment, the emotion of that moment, Patty's standing over you and goes left to right, DC, Rogan. And then you're like mid-sentence giving it up on the broadcast while also trying to maintain the athletic.
Starting point is 00:57:17 of a high five at that angle, which is not easy. I'm just trying to get my high five. You know, I mean, don't want to be left out, you know, fear of missing out on the high five. What's next? What is next? I'm actually going to Serbia. I'm supposed to go to Max Holloway's inaugural golf tournament in Hawaii
Starting point is 00:57:35 on Sunday, July 19th, Monday, July 20th, right? And how about this? And then Serbia later in the month. Max doesn't have a scratch on him. He doesn't. He didn't fight. And now... Do you shower?
Starting point is 00:57:47 right so how about you find out yeah you find out if he even shower I will yeah well he probably has to get a little bit of a lather going yeah in the back yeah but imagine right and I don't know the extent to which he's a golfer and I know you got to go
Starting point is 00:58:01 but imagine right you have your inaugural golf tournament coming up and you don't even have to compete right I mean I don't know how much money he made but good on you Max because he earned it where can we check out the pod it's on YouTube we're about to go two hours and a lot to talk about.
Starting point is 00:58:19 But yeah, buddy, it's great to catch up with you always. I hope to see you at a live event. I think we're going back to Los Angeles later this year. All right, L.A. You stay in my place and then keep the per diem. And we'll just tell Dana White that it's Ryan Rissillo using my tickets and he'll put them on the floor, right? Yeah, I definitely.
Starting point is 00:58:38 I want that. And I want to be graphiced as Alex Caruso. Bro. I mean, I said Shakur Stevenson for the fucking record. You know? I mean, I know a five-foot-six-inch man when I see one. But, dude, like, these celebs shots are how I get in trouble. You know, like, pop-culturally, I'm not locked in. So I need pronunciations on actors, and then, you know, they fought the boxer that we've just signed as an NBA player.
Starting point is 00:59:04 So I'm trying to call fights and do promos. The celebs are the bane of my existence. Great card, though. I mean, I know the main events suck, but it was a great card. And you guys are great, as always. Thanks for the time, man. See you. You want details?
Starting point is 00:59:19 Bye. I drive a Ferrari, 355 cabriole. What's up? I have a ridiculous house in the South Fork. I have every toy you can possibly imagine. And best of all, kids, I am liquid. So now you know what's possible. Let me tell you what's required.
Starting point is 00:59:37 Life advice, the email address is LifeAdvice, RR at gmail.com. I feel like we have a lot to get to here, a lot of housekeeping before some excursions. We got fucking Dennis Connor over here. America's Cup For those watching on Netflix I'd say stars and stripes But I forget to wear the stars
Starting point is 00:59:55 You get some double stripes going on All right, yeah Unplanned but you know Hey Two guys are style Okay so I've got a travel log I'll be coming up Of an excursion here upon us soon
Starting point is 01:00:10 House sitters are excited that I'll be gone Security What else do we need to do here. We have a Kyle Travelog from his day, Dan Barry, and I am telling you right now, it delivers in ways I never even thought with it.
Starting point is 01:00:26 I didn't doubt Kyle, but it is incredible. Like I really did. Like, I did not. I genuinely did not want to say. Isn't that the thing with the travelogue business? You have to leave a wanting more. I don't know that I've ever thought of that.
Starting point is 01:00:37 Mine are pretty long. Yeah. What do we do with this thing? Do we have it like a standalone travelogue with Kyle? when the show, because we're still going to have shows every week, but we will be releasing, you know, pre-tape shows. So do we do this as a standalone surprise one day,
Starting point is 01:00:55 or we just throw it in Thursday's pot? It's 15 minutes. I don't know. That's like, I love that standalone. I kind of think it's great, though. Yeah, I vote on its own. I vote. We just drop it special surprise some in the next couple weeks,
Starting point is 01:01:09 and when people see it, it's going to be jubilation. There's no rule. There's no rule it has to be. an hour of pontificating about salary bullshit. Let's just have an episode that magically appears. So that way, you know, sub-numbers are good. So I don't know that this is some sort of gimmick. But yeah, just have a standalone, Kyle.
Starting point is 01:01:28 He has to read the intro. He has to do the teases. I'm going to do the trafficking stuff. Yeah, yeah, you do. Okay. Oh, man. Are you cool with that? I did that one ad read and everyone lost their minds because I had like a weird,
Starting point is 01:01:41 non-confident, low voice. I forget what that was. It was like a couple years ago. people were like, what the hell was that? I think you were gone and I had to read it. There was some sort of thing. It was bad. So I'm looking to redeem myself there. That'll work. You're also the voice of awesome.com. Dude, I love that. Okay, so we've got that covered. And then today was Sean Sweeney, who this has never happened before. As we finish up and he's still on the Zoom, he says, hey, is Kyle here?
Starting point is 01:02:12 Yeah. Dude, I'm still there. It's like, what? Is he going to get into a fight 10 years ago somewhere in Poughkeepsie? What's going on? Nope. So you guys had met as a cigar bar before? Yeah. After he left, I was just talking to Sarudy.
Starting point is 01:02:27 You ran out to the other room for some reason, but I think you can still hear us with your AirPods and stuff if you're in range. But I was just... I heard it all. I was just telling him, like, those first two summer leagues, like I was basically just acting like I was in Vegas and Tate was kind of leading me around. And Tate, like, you know, basketball guy. He's a relationship guy.
Starting point is 01:02:43 and I'd heard Sean Sweeney's name for a lot, you know, a lot of my career, I guess, because Tate's known him forever. And every once in a while, Tate will just pull up to someone, you know what it's like in the wind when you're just moving around in there. You run into guys.
Starting point is 01:02:57 Yeah, and he was, I think, one of the guys that I was with. But again, I was just sort of super unprofessional in Vegas the first year or two. So that one may have slipped through the cracks. But once he told me about it, I remember it immediately. He wants to take a fish. Apparently, though. I don't know, man.
Starting point is 01:03:16 I don't know. Being in those, you know, the biggest thing I remember about that first one was just getting removed from the arena because I had beers in the media section with my sunglasses on. It was like, dude, Mitch Cupcheck saw all that. That sucks. I was like, I'm sorry. I'm sorry. So, you know, I really started to tighten up after that one. But, yeah, that first one specifically was just, I don't remember a ton.
Starting point is 01:03:41 Well, it sounds like you've got a place to stay when you're in the greater Orlando area. Yeah. Yeah. I think he likes you a lot. Yeah. What is that? Was that the orphan commercial? Take me fishing.
Starting point is 01:03:56 Can we get IT on that? You know what I'm talking about. You want me to look up. Orphan commercial? I don't know. Yeah. All right. Is this an age gap thing or is this like happening?
Starting point is 01:04:04 Oh, definitely. Definitely. Yeah. I mean, I don't know how old that ad is. What year to come out, Surty? Just can type an orphan commercial? Google. Orphan commercial.
Starting point is 01:04:12 Fishing. Maybe we go foster care. I feel like orphan is a harsher term. Foster care feels a little softer. Yeah, I'm getting like YouTube feel good stuff. I don't think that's what it is. There was some orphanage farm. Yeah, that's not it. Yeah, those like third world country videos where the guy builds like a hot tub out of clay. That's what I'm getting right now, basically. You know what I'm talking about? I do. And then it's like in Arkansas. Yeah. something. So, all right.
Starting point is 01:04:42 I derailed it a little bit there. I'm going to find that. I'm going to find that quote. But yeah, that was a good one. That was a big win for me. And then I think Max Homa had a surprising, like,
Starting point is 01:04:52 you know, knew who I was sort of deal. So those were two big ones. There you go. Yeah, feeling good today, my LLB and stuff. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:04:59 So here and stuff like that. Well, that's going to be the only problem is. We can't really pepper you with questions about the Dan Barry experience until this thing air is, right? That's fine. I'll just say LL Bean was awesome
Starting point is 01:05:09 and wish we had wish we had more of those When you said champ sports I just You're like definitely gonna hit up champs I was like yeah let's go Well it's just one of those that's not It's not in the area
Starting point is 01:05:21 There's like other stuff but See what a Connecticut Lids holds You know it's just gonna be different Yeah What was Connecticut Lids like There's a few more Patriots options I'll tell you that That's good to know
Starting point is 01:05:37 All right A couple of feedback emails here. This was an interesting one that may have made me change my mind about our cat guy that was like, hey, these cats sort of suck. Can I get rid of them? I think collectively we're like, that's sort of on you to do that. We had a guy, somebody else said that, but had this opinion, you're a human, they are animals. How about enjoy your limited time on earth? I don't know. Meaning what, like get them out of there right now? Yeah, that's what it. Just throw them outside. Yeah, you're a human. I mean, you should have more and more.
Starting point is 01:06:09 money than you have right now. Go take some. Where does it end? I don't know. Yeah, that sucks. I mean, I don't know what else needs to be said. You have to go to the bathroom right now. Don't look for a bathroom. You're a human. Enjoy your time. Just go. Go behind the street. Yeah. I don't know that that's what he's saying. I know. It's not. But, I mean, where does it end? I don't know, man. There's some level as you get older of like personal responsibility where it's like, hey, dude, like you made this decision. Like these animals didn't ask you to adopt them. And like, now, you're putting him in a bad spot. I can't talk.
Starting point is 01:06:41 Maybe fall through on something. I don't know. Just the thought. I think both good points, both good points. But that's not going to go over well. That email's not going to go over well. I just thought it was efficient to the point. That guy's, is that guy a terrible roommate?
Starting point is 01:06:55 Is he a great roommate? Selfless lover. You always know what you're getting, though. You always know what you're getting. This is something I need to clean up because we, it came, I keep pointing out Westbrook as my, if Westbrook grew up playing soccer. He would be good at soccer because I think he's the best athlete I've ever seen play basketball And we've gotten this email a couple times here.
Starting point is 01:07:18 I think I'm open to having my mind change for the specific reason. Westbrook would be an awful soccer player. Love the pod, generally agree with your soccer tapes, but saying Westbrook growing up playing soccer and he'd be great as dumb. Westbrook is a 17 year vet. He still makes the same obvious mistakes 17 years in. He's not a winning player. He couldn't figure out basketball. How could he figure out soccer?
Starting point is 01:07:37 point because obviously there's elements of Westbrook's game that I'm not a huge fan of despite being enamored with this athleticism, which I'll even get pushed back on that. But I think he's the best athlete that's ever playing the NBA. But if you want to hammer me on like, hey, he makes these simple mistakes and mental lapses, I guess I wasn't really looking at it that way. I was looking at his size, his conditioning, his athleticism, if that guy grows up playing soccer, if you want to make it more specific now that I have to pick a smaller quick athlete with great conditioning that doesn't ever make any mistakes. I have to pick a receiver that doesn't do anything wrong. Like, you got me. But maybe I'll stop saying Westbrook. I just have a hard time believing that
Starting point is 01:08:16 Westbrook, the athlete would be a bad thing growing up in youth soccer. The one that you always said, or the one that when you say that I thought you should have said is, like, Odell Beckham Jr., right? Because he's like, what, he's six, is he six feet? Is he five, 11 great athlete? He actually has like a bit of a soccer background. Now, like, I think a lot of those guys that are like, oh, he plays football, but he's also good at soccer. It's like, hey, man, you can, like, kick a ball. Maybe you could juggle a little bit, a little bit, but, like, you're not actually good at soccer. Chaddow.
Starting point is 01:08:43 Christian Gonzalez? Is he a soccer guy? I don't know. Say, what if he was? He's big, though. He's like, he's like, somebody got a new pat's lid. Yeah, I was in a sense. Got a little patch on the side.
Starting point is 01:08:52 Yeah, number zero. Yeah. I always went back to two, like, slot receivers, you know, would Wes Walker be a good fullback, probably, you know? Well, what about, I don't know? I mean, Julian Edelman goes from quarterback to probably Hall of Fame career. I don't know if he gets in or not, but usually you win enough. The NFL, I think they're Hall of Fame, the Pro Football Hall of Fame, rewards winning with its players, which I think is terrific. But if Edelman can go from college quarterback to that level of wide receiver, like, you don't think Jules wouldn't figure out soccer if he started.
Starting point is 01:09:32 I mean, maybe it doesn't. I mean, to sit there and say, like, oh, he is guaranteed to be on the U.S. men's national team is a bit of a stretch to even make that statement. But, you know, we don't need to get bogged down on all this again. I may adjust my Westbrook example, though, because it's a fair point. That's by that logic, wouldn't you say that like any professional athlete who just decided he wanted to play a different sport at a certain age would just be a pro? That's what you're saying? Kyler Murray. I'm just kidding.
Starting point is 01:10:01 Not necessarily. No, because I mean, even, I was listening to a lot because it's driver in Montana so much last week. Can I just do an aside on Montana real quick? I went to a rodeo. Kale Smith, all-time ride, all-time ride. He just, his mouth was going full steam right into the aluminum railings of the crowd. Full steam. ahead and kale didn't fucking flinch stayed on that thing got it to back up off of the railing
Starting point is 01:10:41 like inches away from just smashing into the railing on a horse as fast as he possibly could and kale controlled it he controlled his emotions he got his eight seconds i think he won um team roping is way harder back guys got just a brutal brutal then they brought out the little buccaroos the first time I saw that, I'm like, what the hell? Did something get loose? I'm like, there's a kid on there with a hockey mask. Just they never, they never stay on. He's got a great name. He's got a great name. I love all their names, too. All the names are incredible. It's like they're born to ride. It's like, this is what? This is your path, dude. You're a root and toot and rope and SOB. I love it so much out there. I mean, it was like fake, fake world to be there
Starting point is 01:11:24 for a week and then still be able to work. And then I had like two other things. So it was, it was an awesome I bought a new hat too Kyle hat buddies yeah um but I would say if I were if I were younger and maybe the social scene isn't going that well for me I think there's a real side door into socializing and maybe even women start a new out there because I used to despise snowboarder smoke weed every night guy with no personality back in college because I'd go he's not There's not a lot there, guys. Yeah. And then girls would like him.
Starting point is 01:12:02 Like, he doesn't even have to do anything. He's just, he always has weed, and he just came from the mountain. And then everybody just says he's chill. He's got a birded mania on. Yeah. Like, he's kind of like, I've never heard him say anything interesting. He's not funny. I don't even know if he's fast, like straight line.
Starting point is 01:12:19 Guys are usually kind of hot, though. They're decent, you know, that's no border guys. I'm not saying he's ugly, but I wouldn't say he's hot. All right. So don't get me started. lateral quickest. Yeah. I think if I were like in my 20s or something, I would grow out some sort of Riley Green thing, you know, maybe hit the curls. And it's sure, you know, it helps if you're tall, obviously, but maybe you wouldn't be in the situation in the first place. But I think you could
Starting point is 01:12:47 just mill around these communities for a little while. Perel snaps. Yeah. Exactly, Kyle. Exactly. I think there's a way to kind of read. But then, you know, you don't want to be Don Cheadle and Boogie Night. where it's like, what fuck is this? You know, this, this, you didn't ease this into this at all, man. Like, this is a lot. So I think you'd have to like, maybe I'm doing it right now. I don't even, maybe this is about me. I didn't even realize it.
Starting point is 01:13:14 So. You had it back to summer though, right? You usually go twice. I usually go twice. Yeah. I want to go to the, I'm going to go to the other parts of Montana. Everybody says don't go to. I want to be well-rounded.
Starting point is 01:13:33 Yeah, that'll up your chops a little bit. Definitely. If you're feeling any sort of, you know, imposter syndrome, yeah, go to one of those places. Come back with some stories. I haven't done Idaho at all, though. So that sucks. I was just going to say Idaho. You ever see like that thing where people would, like, they'll circle like the little, like,
Starting point is 01:13:50 the little sliver of Idaho that connects to Canada? And there's like, what's going on up here? Like, what are we, who's up here? I about, like, what's going on? I don't know. A lot. I've driven through it. but that was not my favorite day
Starting point is 01:14:01 when I drove you might have another chance potatoes I didn't I didn't want to give anything a chance there I remember it was like I was like oh yeah nine years ago that's where you had that super depressing burger before you got on your flight Bozeman it was a good time I was like oh the most depressed burger you've ever had
Starting point is 01:14:21 was right in there but the thing is I put my head up I walked down the fucking street and high five and strangers like let's get some lines in the water you know that's what you're going to do all right uh adult swim rules this one's long 6-2 200 early 40s more of a three sets of 12 than a max out type of guy have been told my looks comp as a poor man's john ham Jesus that's like still one of the hottest guys going yeah that's awesome he sent us a note here we appreciate the note but because it's long we'll keep moving and good to hear all the good news all right back to the email my wife and I live in a major East Coast City, have a 10-month-old rather than travel further to our pre-baby
Starting point is 01:15:00 destinations. We joined one of the beach clubs an hour outside of the city. I'm a partner to a boutique law firm. My wife is a financial analyst, so we're solidly upper middle class for our area. As such, the beach club isn't totally our scene because these places seem to be a bit of a time warp where Murray and Gertie have been going for over 40 years. Shout out to them. And they have theme parties each week where people do things like wear a large Timu Uncle Sam hats. Anyway, there's a pretty decent pool and a pretty decent beach. I've debated about joining a country club. I just don't know that I'm going to be great at those events. So I don't know. I've noticed that a lot of people are like, you don't have to, you don't have to, you don't have to get a
Starting point is 01:15:39 searsucker for our, it's like maybe I should get a sear sucker. Anyway, pretty decent pool, pretty decent beach and the teenagers who work there and make everything entirely convenient fitting our new parents' lifestyle. As acknowledged interlopers into this slightly odd and amusing subculture, we have been on our best behavior by, say, tipping generously, being friendly to anyone who wants to talk to us. Today, though, I apparently stepped out a line and retribution was swift. Over the years, adult swim has taken on many meanings and many contexts, but today I'd like to talk about an actual OG adult swim. From 10.30 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 2.30 p.m. to 3 p.m. adult swim takes place at our beach club.
Starting point is 01:16:20 All the kids sadly leave the pool, except for the few bold ones who forced the lifeguards to kick them out, and octogenarians who come out of the woodwork and then stand around, oh, octogenarians, sorry, octogenarians come out of the woodwork and stand around combitsing with each other for what seems like the best half hour of their day. It's the highlight, for sure. It's the highlight.
Starting point is 01:16:47 So it sounds they're going to have a good old adult swim rule. face-off thing. All right. It's a couple more paragraphs. Anyway, right before the afternoon session of Adult Swim today, it was my turn to watch our 10-month-old for a bit. I hit the pool. My dude's in a great mood. We're gently baby splashing off to the side all by ourselves. Adult Swim starts. I don't think much of it because surely no one's going to take offense to a dad playing with his obviously happy baby off to the side of the pool. That's where I was wrong. About five minutes in to Adult Swim, the friendly, overly bronze 16-year-old lifeguard comes up and he says, Sir, I'm sorry, this isn't coming for me, but there have been complaints about you being in the
Starting point is 01:17:19 pool with your son? You're going to have to get out with him. Not being one to accost teenagers on their summer jobs. I just say, okay, and start getting out of the pool. However, as I'm walking up the steps and my back is literally burned, a few of the regulars take the opportunity to heckle me and my infant son, weekly wheezing out a few admonishments like he isn't an adult. They call it adult swim. Now, I'm not a bad person, but I'm not an actual good turn the, you know, other cheek type of person either. Still, I say nothing back and proceed to walk to my wife. As I'm explaining to her, what just transpired and idea dawns on me. The old timers decided to focus on the adult swim, but I could very easily just focus on the swim part of the adult swim.
Starting point is 01:18:03 My wife is essentially my morality barometer. And when I tell her my plan, she mostly just smiles musedly. So I've got her green light. Now, I didn't go full on Michael Phelps on the circle of cabitzing Murray's, but I made it clear to them through my actions when I got back into the pool that about 15% of the pool was now my swimming lane for the rest of adult swim, and they were now going to have to confine themselves to the other to 85%. There was some grumbling and a bit of testing my will by a few of the Murrays, but they backed down and after I swam by them at full speed a few times. So for your consideration, two sets of questions.
Starting point is 01:18:36 First, adult swim, should it be black and white? Thou shall not participate until you're old enough to join the Army type of thing. And in an abrupt circumstances, do any non-adults belong in the pool? Or are there potential case-by-case exceptions like a dad, watching his happy, quiet infant off to the side to preserve mom's sanity, assuming if the baby started misbehaving, I'm socially cognizant enough to leave the pool on my own. Second, in response to infant heckling,
Starting point is 01:18:59 which I'm going to go out on a limb and assume you'll all come down against, did my retribution of taking up 15% of the pool during their chair of adult swim fit the crime? I'll just say this part, I mean, A, out to bat, you're wrong. It's one of these people get two 30-minute windows where they feel like they've taken back something, like whether it's stupid or not, like, whatever, I'm resigned to that. And when people started talking about like, yeah, I know what the rule is, but my kid just wants to do this, I kind of become out.
Starting point is 01:19:26 I don't have a kid. I understand the, you know, you want to give your kids everything you didn't have and even more and you want them to be happy kids. But as soon as we start talking about skirting around the explicit rules, because my kid just wants to do this, I think that's nothing against the kid. There shouldn't be any infant heckling going on, but you've lost me. And I think you've lost the plot once you're like, yeah, but my kid. like I understand but you're wrong that's all I'll say right it's kind of like the
Starting point is 01:19:53 chipotle thing right like one person like you start making excuses for things and you know all right then like next thing you know like 10 babies are in the pool and then it's like hey just there's like a kid's section of the pool and if I'm yeah like if I'm an older adult and I get to enjoy his guy I said one hour of the day to myself of kids not cannonball and two separate parts yeah yeah like I remember so like I we had a we I think was high school middle school high school, we belong to a pool club in town growing up. Shout out to Mountain Grove. And as a kid, like, that was the end of the world. It was like, those 30 minute windows were like brutal, like such a dog. You'll get a hot dog. You'll be fine. And you're just like, how could this possibly
Starting point is 01:20:28 be a thing? And then like you're an adult and you're like, oh yeah, because like, you know, if I belong to this thing, like I just want a little bit of peace and quiet, just like not have like, you know, pool noodles being thrown at me or what God knows what from these kids. So I, yeah, it sucks. But like, it kind of has to exist. The rule is fair. And yeah, I'm not into, like, heckling kids, but you are wrong here. This is, this is, like, you couldn't just, this is, this is, like, this is, like, go to the beach part of the thing. Like, there's got to be something else, some other place, body of water situation.
Starting point is 01:20:56 There's not a kiddie pool that you could have taken your baby to, like, you have to be in the main pool for this. Like, I just, maybe there isn't, and I'm just, you know, that was your only option. But, yeah, like, this is an L. It's, I mean, these people move states to communities where they don't even let middle-aged people in. And so if they want 30, they want the 30 minutes a lot to them without chills. children, whatever. It's, it is what it is. I mean, I almost get, like, I almost treat it like kids again. It's like, just let them have the thing. It's fine, you know? So, yeah, I think you're wrong. When you say things like, to preserve my wife's sanity, I'm just going to stay in during
Starting point is 01:21:29 adult swim. It's like, you're sloughing your problems off onto other people when there's rules about it. And listen, I want to be on your side. I hope you continue to listen. But I just, I think your perspective's a little off. When it comes to old people, you got to use maybe kid gloves. Yeah. Yeah, I think you're going to. guys are right. I mean, there's two windows here. We're, like, to be on the emailer's side, like them heckling you, but you've got to understand, like, you're new here. Somebody's tried to pull this move probably every week, if every summer for like 60 years that these other people have been going there, all right?
Starting point is 01:22:02 So they have no, no patience whatsoever for like new guy going. I'm sure this is fine. And yes, is your kid doing anything? No. Does it mean they're anti-baby? No, but it's pretty to fine. 10.30 to 11, 2.30 to 3. All those other minutes are yours. All those other minutes you can do whatever you want. And if you've ever been to anything that's resembling a community pool
Starting point is 01:22:25 to even a high-end country club where then kids are allowed in on the social membership like through the family, like people that join a golf course, but they only do it for the social membership just so their kids can go fucking wild and order a thousand wraps on their member number. That's not
Starting point is 01:22:41 relaxing. It isn't. So I think you have to look at them and go, all right, so fine, the kid is under a year. Then what? Two? You know, it's like, okay, it's okay for adults and then babies under one. Like, you just can't even though, he looks to. Yeah. Yeah, right. You're breaking up the yardstick. Your argument is this kid is not disrupting anything that they're doing. It's not about you. It's not about your baby. It's a fight against the progression of what is the point of us having adult swim time. And now you've also pissed them off even further with the 50% lap pool thing.
Starting point is 01:23:23 I mean, maybe you're not looking to make friends. I totally understand that. But, you know, I imagine you're going to be getting some looks now, even beyond that. Yeah. The Caddy Shack, Caddy's welcome one to 115. I mean, these people, you've got to think, like, this is like a small part of your day. Like, these people are already talking about tomorrow's adult swim today. Like, this is important to them.
Starting point is 01:23:55 And it's like really, when you just have less, when you don't work, you have much less going on. And the little things become so much more important. And I think a little bit of grace is involved in this. I will say, I think there is a part of the old crew. What are they, the octalians? What do you call them? I don't even know. Octogenarians.
Starting point is 01:24:13 Sure. I think there's a part of them that also love that you did this so they can like just discipline someone. They actually like this. They want to put you in your place, which I get that does piss. That would piss me off too. But hey, man, I don't know. Don't feed their, don't feed their ego. You're right.
Starting point is 01:24:30 They were, they were hungry for discipline. Fired up to lay down the law. Yeah. Like, oh, yeah, George really let him have it today. Yeah. Another newb doesn't get it. Yeah. All right.
Starting point is 01:24:44 I think we've covered that one. Do we do, this guy sent it twice. It's really that important. All right. 6.1.2.35, mid-50s, bench 419. Oh, I'm glad we read it now. Squat 575, deadlift 596. And no, there's not lifetime PRs from Bush administration.
Starting point is 01:25:08 All within the last year. Mid-50s, bro. I was, I'm afraid. I didn't, I didn't. Sorry we didn't catch you the first time, man. Yeah. apologies all within the last year no basketball comps peaked early as the MVP my seventh and eighth grade teams where i absolutely dominated the paint until everyone else inconveniently kept growing and developed actual basketball skills one of our departments got an interim leader while the regular manager is out on medical leave new guys probably early 40s good looking dude in shape dressed well very normal and friendly we've talked a handful of times about work life etc totally good guy but here's the issue this dude smells incredible not in an overpowering Vegas nightclub way either, just subtle, expensive.
Starting point is 01:25:54 Quote, this guy probably has his passport renewed before expiration kind of smell. What a great description. I'm not a clone guy at all. Last bottle I owned was bought for me by my ex-wife 15 years ago, and I'm pretty sure I ceremonially threw it away sometime during the divorce process. But I'm engaged now, and I started thinking maybe it wouldn't kill me to occasionally smell like something other than Irish Spring and Costco. hoodie. So my question is, how does one grown man, how does one grown straight man, ask another grown straight man about what Colonies wearing without making the interaction weird because of my head,
Starting point is 01:26:30 hey man, not to get into your personal business here, but whatever's happening cent wise, too many words, strong work. Too many words. He says that feels insane. Is this actual normal guy behavior? Am I overthinking it? Or is there a better way to phrase this? Appreciate it. 315 on incline. No experience with fragrance. Some guys actually, funny and strong. Some guys are like evangelists for their sense. Sounds like this guy cool.
Starting point is 01:26:57 Probably wouldn't be as, you know, excited to tell you. But I had a guy on Fourth of July over. It's like, it's like, you like this? I got my own set.
Starting point is 01:27:05 I'm a DG. Light Blue guy. And he goes, he's like, he's like, this is clone. It's called clone. And you just,
Starting point is 01:27:11 you can get everything you want. Just tell him what you like. And he's like trying to push it on me. I'm like, thanks, man. I'm not going to go to the website. I appreciate. it, but it's like, we can't both get fedoras.
Starting point is 01:27:21 It's true. Just say, they'll make it for you. And it's not that toilette shit. It's that perfume. I'm like, that sounds good. But like, he's always, you know, he like pulled two out of his backpack. He's like, I got this one too. And like, that's a guy that exists.
Starting point is 01:27:33 Not as many of those dudes, but, you know, there's a scale where some of them are actually excited that you like what they smell like. They're happy to do it. And I think there are probably a few less dudes on the other side. They're like, that's weird. I think you could probably just say, what is that dude? What is that, quote? That's it.
Starting point is 01:27:47 Simple as that. be cool. I'm not a cologne guy. I don't. I couldn't even tell you the last time I like actually put cologne on. But I don't think this is weird. I just, just ask him.
Starting point is 01:28:00 Why is that odd? I don't, you know, it's a compliment. You'd be like, hey man. Like if you're, if you're,
Starting point is 01:28:05 don't be weird about it, but just be like, if you guys talk and you say you talk about things, he's a cool guy, clearly you guys have some sort of relationship. Be like, hey man, I'm trying to get into the cologne game.
Starting point is 01:28:13 Like, what's your, what's yours? You smell good. Like, what's going on. Like, It doesn't have to be like awkward.
Starting point is 01:28:17 I don't know. I was wondering if I could smell your neck a little closer to confirm that I like the way you smell. Yeah. Like, I'm starting to start like stealing pieces of clothes and try to figure it out. I just say, I don't, just ask.
Starting point is 01:28:27 First of all, the emailer is funny. So this guy has like a good way about it. Yeah, so all you have to do. Yeah. And if this guy's got some like exploratory bi-rato hybrid thing where it's like, hey,
Starting point is 01:28:37 actually, because I will argue that I think some of the more feminine stuff smells better on men, just because of the pheromones and the way it works, That was my pivot late in the game where it's like you don't have to smell like Vietnam. You can, you know, you can throw on something. You can take the tobacco aspect out of it. Yeah, you can spray something on a sample and be like, this smells a little flowery, a little bouquetish. And then it's like, yeah, but throw it on you with a strong male musk, you know, just putting all that stuff in the beaker.
Starting point is 01:29:09 It can come off great. And then the next thing you know, like a girl's going, what the fuck is that? And then you just go, it's actually women's. perfume. So I don't know if you're ready for that. All right. If you're going Costco, if you're going Costco hoodie, Irish Spring, you're not ready for that. Okay. But what I'm telling you is if this guy
Starting point is 01:29:26 is into it and you look like, was this the guy that said he's, I've already the bench numbers threw me up. Yeah. But the last guy was the poor man's John Hamm. By the way, if you look like John Ham, anything fucking close to that galaxy at the pool, maybe you should get away with
Starting point is 01:29:43 having a baby in the pool. But, I promise you because again, I think you're funny in the way you send in that email. If you just go, hey, I have to ask, I use Irish Spring. What the fuck do you have going on? Yeah, what is that? Where does that even start? Like, what was your journey to get to smelling like this? And if you've already talked to him a few times, he's probably going to appreciate it.
Starting point is 01:30:06 It's like asking somebody who has a nice watch on, hey, is that? What kind of watch is that? Unless they're about a lot of love. Yeah, maybe he'll tell you too. yeah, like you don't want to start here, but you can, this is level one. Like, this is where you start and you can kind of give you some advice to build up your confidence on that, you know? Or honestly, you can even, I could use that guy. I, because like my, my Cologne experience, like, you know, back in the day, it was like, you know, you used to just smell, like, to Ryan's the
Starting point is 01:30:30 point you'd, like, walk in a room and, like, someone punch you in the face because you're wearing some sort of like Abercrombie Hollister thing. And then I was like off of it for a while and I just never have gotten back onto it. So I don't know. I'm, I couldn't even tell you what's cool now. Well, I'd tell both of you, you know what? Go on your own adventure, pop into Macy's, make that lady's day at the fucking perfume counter. She is constantly trying to wave people down so she can say, I talk to three people today in this dying Macy's. Go in there and spend 15 minutes. You know, they're going to be so happy to help you. That Tom Ford Rainbow, don't let it intimidate you, okay? That lady wants to sell you something. Yes. And she wants her manager to see that she is not
Starting point is 01:31:08 sneaking Instagram time on her phone behind the watch case. She's also manning the jewelry and the and the perfume. Like, do that. Take, take your own adventure. And then if you're still not satisfied, then you can go. And then if you need his stuff, you can say, you know what, I actually was trying the top four thing. Actually, you know, no, I don't like that. That scares me. I think I need to, I need to go. I love it, Kyle, but I don't know. I'm not comfortable. I just got nervous. Go ahead. I want to go to next, to Kyle's next Danbury Mall trip. I feel like I need to go because I think he, he, he does the mall right. I don't know that I do the mall right. I don't know if I've ever done the mall right. And I feel like I just need him to like show me what to do. Like, you know, like he's just,
Starting point is 01:31:45 he's my guide to the stores, talking to people, the secret tricks, you know, I need it. Yeah, Palisades maybe, maybe meet up at the Palisades. Sometimes I wish Kyle were single and then Surre would have to like go with them to stuff. And be like, what, how was the food court? He was like, well, met some girls. But, Yeah. We shared a sesame chicken samples and then we went our separate ways. Back of the roly bolly days, free samples. Look out. All right, that'll do it for the show today. I think it might just be a fishing thing and there were no orphans involved because I was trying to research this while we were doing it. I don't know. You want to shout out our Friday feedback so we don't have to make an edit later?
Starting point is 01:32:29 Well, I was going to put the beginning too, but throw it here as well. Yeah. Yeah, we'll do a tease, but we'll close it out as well. Friday feedback r. R.R. at gmail.com. We have another. unleashed that beast in a while. So any critiques, any complaints, anything you think that you like about us? I don't even know what. It's just other than a mailbag.
Starting point is 01:32:49 It's just a mailbag. And we were doing it to keep the YouTube stuff going. But it's actually, we haven't done one in so long that we'll just do it that way. So again, Friday Feedback r.R. at gmail.com to have a release while the show is not necessarily live
Starting point is 01:33:03 for a couple weeks here. As I plan the next longer, This travel pot is going to be a monster. So, no days off. That'll do it for the Ryan Rusillo Show. Thanks to everybody on the show. And also, Barstall Sports. Chew.
