Welcome to the Science of Flipping Podcast. I'm your host, Justin Colby.
What's up, everybody? Welcome back to the Science of Flipping Podcast. I am your host, Justin Colby, and I am sitting next to my brother, my mentor, my business partner, my man, Mr. Kent Clothier. How are you, dude?
What's up?
What's up?
Man, I'm down here in our San Diego office having a great day.
Had some incredible meetings.
Met some really incredible business people who, man, they're taking it to the next level, quite frankly.
I mean, we're an incredible, I mean, where were we? Palo Verde? Where were we?
Rancho Valencia.
Or Rancho Valencia.
But hey, listen, I literally literally as we're driving in there
I'm looking around
this neighborhood
and I'm like
dude this place is
I mean
it's the real money
it's not the
you make a million dollars
a year money
it's a
right
you're making
millions of
yeah yeah yeah
right
it's big boy
so anyways
this is the
ask the expert
episode
and again
I brought in
my brother
Kent Clothier
to just
you know drop a little knowledge.
You have built incredible businesses. You have many different businesses. I think there's a lot
of people out there that are trying to figure out how to just create a business. They keep getting
caught. They keep hitting this wall, whether it's they need more leads or they don't know how to get
out of their own way or they are scared to hire someone because they won't do it as well as they do it or whatever those hurdles are.
And I can tell you, I know you well enough.
You've gone through all that on an X scale, right?
What would you tell someone that's trying to figure out how to go from this?
I'm doing something.
I'm making some money.
How do I build a business, man? Whether it's fear-based, whether it's systems-based, whether it's processes-based,
what advice would you give someone out there trying to get to that next level?
What advice would I give to somebody trying to get to that next level?
I would say the best advice I can give somebody would be absolutely having a healthy understanding of fear and what it does, how debilitating it can be, how much it can hold you back, what's going on between your ears.
It largely controls the actions that you ultimately will take.
Totally. will take. I mean, if you don't believe that you have the ability to achieve amazing things, then
there's no doubt that you will not try to achieve amazing things. You will sit back and make little
small minded, weak ass decisions that ultimately will turn out and give you weak ass results. And
you get to be right. And that's where most people get trapped. Even if they have a business and they're trying to build a bigger business, all the things you asked me about were all fear-based questions.
Yeah.
Right?
Well, is it systems?
Is it processes?
Is it hiring?
I mean, these are all things.
I don't know enough about it is what you're really saying.
Somebody would be saying, I don't really know enough about it, and so therefore I'm fearful of it.
Yeah.
I'm just not going to do it because I'm scared.
If I try, I'm going to fail.
Right.
Or they may not even voice it to that degree.
Yeah.
Meaning that's the first step is acknowledging it.
Totally.
Understanding that what you're doing is you are giving yourself an excuse to be a wimp.
Yeah.
Right.
I mean, you're basically wrapping yourself in this cloak of mediocrity and just saying it's OK for me to be where I am, to be in this comfort zone.
And as long as I keep telling myself that I don't understand these things or these things are elusive or these things are hard or I don't have time to go to the gym or I don't have time to be the guy or the girl that I'm capable of being, I don't want to invest in this.
Those are all the little things, the conversations that are just all fear-based things. It's all the
conversations that hold us back from taking risk and doing things that, yes, they're supposed to be
scary things, right? But that doesn't make them any less worthy of your time and your effort and
your energy. And if you want to accomplish amazing things, you have to be willing to embrace that.
So the very first thing is have a healthy appreciation for fear.
The next thing is to know how to fight through that fear.
Because here's what I absolutely know to be true.
Is that that conversation, whether you actually have it or you just simply ignore it that thing will hold back
99.9 of the people which is okay because that still leaves plenty of room for for me yeah for
you yeah for us right and the difference between the haves and the have-nots are the people that see it for what it is and realize that I can't be one of those people that allows that lack of making a decision or allows that fear to hold me back.
Because it's going to be one or the other.
Either it is the thing that empowers you.
Yeah. Because you've had the conversation and you've figured out how to wrap your mind around it and position it in a way where, oh my God, this is not an obstacle.
This is an opportunity.
Right.
Right.
You're that person or you're the person that says, eh, let's get to it tomorrow.
All right.
I don't want it.
All right.
That's not for me.
Can't get down the road.
So what you've effectively done is that I'm just going to focus on the obstacle.
Yeah.
I'm going to focus on the obstacle instead of focusing on the road. So what you've effectively done is said, I'm just going to focus on the obstacle. Yeah. I'm going to focus on the obstacle
instead of focusing
on the opportunity.
The people that focus on it
as an opportunity
to differentiate themselves,
to lead an exceptional life,
to do amazing things,
when they see it
for what it is
and that this is a moment
that will define me
one way or the other.
Right.
But I get a choice
and I choose
to let it define me
as a warrior.
Those are the people that win
because they fight.
They step into that opportunity
versus saying, you know what?
I'm just going to go back and be average
like everybody else.
But the warriors get what they want, right?
They fight for it, right?
And so more often than not, again,
it's not guaranteed,
but if you want something,
you have to go for it
and you can't let that fear step in your way.
Otherwise, there's no chance.
Well, I think you have to understand that we all have it.
Right.
That's the big misconception.
That you're fearless.
Is that people that are watching this video will sit there, and they see my resume, or they see your resume, or they see others' resumes, and they think there's something different.
They don't see themselves in us.
Right.
What they see in us is somebody that, quote has got it all figured out and nothing could be further from the truth. Yeah.
It is absolutely false. We don't have it figured out. We still absolutely have businesses that try
our patience. That's powerful, man. That suffer. Yeah. That have, we have really bad days, right?
We have those moments where like, what the hell am I doing? We absolutely have that. Yeah. That have, we have really bad days, right? We have those moments where like, what the hell am I doing?
We absolutely have that.
Yeah.
The difference is we figured out how that those moments are the moments when everybody
else gives up.
Yeah.
And we say, no, I'll get through it.
I got it.
And what's the irony is, is once you do that, once it empowers you to the, where you suddenly
have this new belief system that says, oh,
you know what?
I got through that in the past.
Last time I was here and I was up against the ropes and I was getting my ass kicked,
I figured it out.
Yeah.
So I can do it again.
Gives you the confidence.
Totally.
Yeah.
And then before you know it, that constant.
And so again, looking at it, it's like, oh, they got to figure it out.
The only thing we figured out is how to overcome fear.
The fear.
Right. That's it. We haven't figured out how to avoid it right we haven't figured out how to avoid the trying and difficult situations all we have done is figured out how to when we're in the
face of those situations to say this is an opportunity it is not an obstacle it will define
me one way or the other i get a choice yeah. And I choose that I will be defined as the person
that fought, not as the person that gave up. I phrase it slightly different. I say it gives me
the opportunity to be in the game. At least I can get in the game making this decision. Because if
I'm in the game, then I have at least the opportunity to hit the home run or score the
winning touch. But if I don't even get in the game, if I check out and say that I'm scared,
I'm just going to,
I don't even get,
I don't have any opportunity
to get to where I want to be.
Be grateful, to your point,
be grateful that this is a challenge
that you get to overcome.
Right.
Be grateful that the challenge isn't
how am I going to eat today?
Or how am I going to drink today?
Or how am I going to take care of my kids today?
Or how am I going to not sleep in my car anymore?
I mean, be grateful that the challenges are different.
That the challenges are something that you get to decide how amazing your life is going to look.
The degrees of amazing.
Totally.
Instead of, you know, I've talked about this in the past.
And you go down to Haiti or the other places and you're just like, oh my God.
Talk about putting things in perspective.
It's a totally different conversation.
I can only imagine.
Right?
I mean, it's like, okay, we get the chance to figure out how to move a business from making $300,000 a year to 3 million.
Right.
Okay.
All things considered.
First world problems.
Yeah.
Be grateful that that's the conversation you get to have.
No doubt.
Of course.
I think it's, um, it's important to have that.
And if somebody were to change,
and there are quite literally billions,
not millions,
billions of people
that would trade places with you in a second.
Right.
That your worst day is their best.
So shut the hell up,
step into it,
and make the most out of it.
Don't be a wimp.
Right.
Be the hero.
The hero of your own life, baby. I mean, that's what be a wimp. Be the hero. Hero of your own life, baby.
That's what it's all about.
Be the hero of your own life.
