Starting point is 00:00:47 time of day. She sits on the couch with her mom as the opening notes of Bobble the Clown Blair from the TV. Her mom is
Starting point is 00:00:55 already snoring before the opening credits are over. and the show actually begins. She does this every time. Bobble appears on the screen, with his familiar blue and green suit and flaming orange hair. He squeaks his red nose, and Ella giggles.
Starting point is 00:01:13 There's something about Bobble that makes her feel good. He treats her like a friend, as if he's there in the room with her. She loves Bobble almost as much as she loves her mommy and daddy. He bounces around on the screen, shouts, Hey, kids, today we're going to learn about truth. Bable is a great teacher.
Starting point is 00:01:34 Ella likes him more than her teachers at school. They're boring, and they always get her in trouble. But she can't look away from Bobble. Here's a crazy truth. Parents sometimes lie. Ella's mouth gapes open, and she glances at her mother, still asleep beside her. She never can stay awake, so Ella has always watched it by herself. I know, I know, that's hard to believe, but sometimes truths are hard.
Starting point is 00:02:04 They can be hard to tell and hard to get. Ella has learned about lies at school. She has been told that they are bad. But if that is the case, why would parents do it? Just like you and I aren't perfect, neither are parents. Bable continues. Have you ever been to the toy store with your mommy and wanted a toy super bad? and Mommy said, we'll come back, but you never did.
Starting point is 00:02:31 That's because Mommy lied. Or maybe Daddy told you that if you be in the pool, everyone will know because the water will change color. Well, kids, that's another lie. Ella's eyes go wide, and she leans forward, so she's a mere foot away from the TV. She thinks about how, when she asks Mommy if she misses Daddy, she always says, no.
Starting point is 00:02:55 But Ella has seen her staring at his photo and has heard her crying at night. Does this mean mommy is a liar? The good news. Bobble continues. Is that Bobble never lies? But how do you know what the truth is when even your parents tell you lies?
Starting point is 00:03:13 Bobble pulls someone into the frame. It's an adult man wearing a lion mask that covers his mouth, nose, and eyes. The man stands perfectly still, and Bobble has an arm around his back. This is my friend, Lucas. I asked Lucas if he likes my show, and he said yes. But how do I know that he's telling the truth?
Starting point is 00:03:35 Watch closely, kids, because in today's episode, I'm going to show you how to make sure you're getting the truth. Are you ready? Ella vigorously nods her head. Her eyes glued to the screen. Bobble smiles. Great! Then let's begin.
Starting point is 00:03:55 Half an hour later, Ella's mom begins to stir. The end credits of Bobble the Clown scroll along the screen. Oh, did I miss it again? She mumbles. Ella nods, finally tearing her eyes from the TV. Her mother sat up and groaned, rubbing her forehead. What was it about this time, squirt?
Starting point is 00:04:17 Telling the truth, Ella says. Oh, that's good. Ella's mom yawns and walks to the kitchen, still holding her head. Mommy, do you ever lie? Ella calls after her. She returns with a box in one hand and a jar in the other. Of course not, sweetie. Now, do you want nuggets or pasta for dinner?
Starting point is 00:04:41 Nuggets? Ella replies automatically. Her mother nods and disappears again. Ella remains rooted to the spot. She replays her mother's response over and over again. Mommy said she didn't lie, But Bobble said she did. So, either way, one of them is lying.
Starting point is 00:05:02 But which one? If she shouldn't trust Bobble, should she trust her mother? And if she shouldn't trust her mother, should she trust Bobble? Ella is more confused than she's ever been. She is still thinking about the show during recess the next day, when she overhears one of her friends say, You're a liar! She walks over to the slide and joins Hannah and Trevor,
Starting point is 00:05:28 What happened? Hannah turns to her with tears in her eyes and points a shaking finger at Trevor. He said I'm the ugliest girl in the world. Is that the truth? Ella faces Trevor, but Hannah responds. Of course not. She places her hands on her hips, but her lower lip trembles. Trevor, did you lie?
Starting point is 00:05:52 Trevor juts out his chin and glances between the girls. No, I didn't. Ella looks at Hannah. Her friend has freckles all over her face, and her hair is a dull shade of brown. But Ella is sure that she's seen uglier girls than her. She's almost positive. Trevor has, too.
Starting point is 00:06:10 Do you want to know the truth? She asks Hannah. Hannah hesitates for a moment before nodding. I know how we can find out. Ella smiles and turns back to Trevor. Bable showed me how. An hour later, Ella sits in the principles. office, her feet dangling off the chair. Her mother sits beside her in blue scrubs with a frown
Starting point is 00:06:35 on her face. She did what? The principal glances between Ella and her mother, his voice stern. She choked him and locked him in a closet. Ella can still feel his neck in her hands, can still see his face turning blue as she squeezed and squeezed. Her mother turns to her, her eyes round and her mouth open. Don't game. It's not polite. Ella says. And who knows what might fly in there? She's heard the same words from her mother dozens of times. But for some reason, her mother appears angry at her saying that now.
Starting point is 00:07:10 She shakes her head, her eyes dark. What on earth made you do that to that poor boy? Ella shrugs. He lied. What did he say? He called Hannah the ugliest girl in the world. But I know she's not uglier than that. Ella points to a photo on the desk, satisfied that she's proved her point.
Starting point is 00:07:32 That's my daughter, the principal responds. Ella's mother turns red, but Ella shrugs. Too bad for you. Ella! What? Ella frowns, looking between her mother and the principal, both of whom are looking at her like she's sprouted an extra nose. Apologize to Mr. Nichols right now.
Starting point is 00:07:53 For what? You don't have to apologize for telling the truth. only for lying, which is what Trevor did. He should be in trouble, not me. For a moment, the office is silent. The only sound is the ticking of the clock, counting down to the next episode of Bobble. When her mother speaks, her voice is a touch more gentle.
Starting point is 00:08:15 Ella, it's never right to tell a lie, but it's also not right to punish someone yourself. If you have a problem with someone, tell a teacher. Don't lock them in a closet. Or choke them, the principal adds. Ella does not understand, but if she spends much longer here, she'll miss Bobble. So, she nods her head. She lowers her eyes. I'm very sorry, Mr. Nichols, and I'm sorry about Trevor.
Starting point is 00:08:42 I know better now. It won't happen again. It had better not. There will be consequences next time, young lady. Severe consequences. Ella doesn't know what that means, but based on the way he wags his finger at her, It's nothing good. Yes, sir. She says in a small voice. The car ride home is quiet.
Starting point is 00:09:04 Neither Ella nor her mother say a word. Both lost in their own thoughts. Ella's mother wonders if there's something wrong with her child, if it's normal for a six-year-old to choke someone. Ella wonders what she could have done if she'd had more time. When they arrive home, Ella runs straight to the TV and plops herself down on the couch. What do you think you're doing?
Starting point is 00:09:28 Her mother says. It's time for Bobble. Not today it isn't. No more Bobble for a week. That's your punishment for what you did today. What? Rage boils in Ella's veins, a kind of anger that she's never known before. You'll head straight to your room and only come out for dinner.
Starting point is 00:09:46 Ella shakes her head in disbelief. But that's not fair! I said sorry. I'm not even the one who lied. To your room, Ella, now. Ella is shaking with fury as she enters her bedroom and slams the door behind her. No Bobble for a week? How will she manage? How can her mother be so cruel, so heartless? Now, more than ever, Ella truly believes that Bobble is right. Her mother is a liar.
Starting point is 00:10:13 At school the next day, the other kids look at Ella funny. Even Hannah keeps her distance. Trevor yelps when she enters the classroom and dashes to his desk in the far corner of the room. Ella can't help but smile. For the first time in her life, she feels powerful, and she owes it all to bobble. But when she tries to join a group for tag at recess, one of the girls shakes her head.
Starting point is 00:10:43 You can't play with us. Ella tilts her head. Why not? Because you're too... The girl pauses. She glances at the others, but they quickly look away. Fast. You're too fast. It's not fun that way.
Starting point is 00:10:58 Ella frowns. She steps closer to the girl until they are a mere inch apart. Last week you called me slow. The girl gulps. The group behind her steps back, their gazes shifting uneasily between Ella and her prey.
Starting point is 00:11:14 I think you're lying, and I know exactly how to get the truth. Okay, you can play. Just please don't hurt me. The girl whimpers. Ella smiles. She taps the girl on the shoulder and watches her wince at the touch. Tag, you're it.
Starting point is 00:11:32 Ella runs away, pleased to have gotten what she wanted, but slightly disappointed she didn't have the opportunity to repeat yesterday's fun. She would have liked to see that girl's face turn blue. When she's not at school, Ella is confined to her bedroom. She doesn't mind, except she misses Bobble. But, since she can't be brought to Bobble, she brings Bobble to her. She spends her time practicing what Bobble taught her. She uses her jump rope to tie knots over and over again until they are so good she can't
Starting point is 00:12:08 undo them. She uses her pointy magic wand to stab her least favorite teddy bear over and over until his stuffing covers the floor. She plays with her toy hammer and nails, driving them into the pretend wood with as much power as she can muster. She is careful to clean up after herself and hide her toys under the bed so her mother doesn't see. Diner's are quiet. Ella has barely spoken to her mother since she punished her with no bobble.
Starting point is 00:12:37 Her mother hardly seems to notice. There are bags under her eyes, and her skin is paler than usual. She watches Ella when she thinks she's not looking, and Ella wonders what she's thinking. But she doesn't ask. She's not sure she'd get the truth anyway. When Ella feels ready, she gathers, supplies, and stores them under the bed, too. The real hammer goes beside the fake one. The knife sits beside the wand.
Starting point is 00:13:06 The pieces of rope she found in the garage are placed neatly beside the jump rope, now completely covered in knots. By the end of her week without bobble, Ella has everything she needs. The house is eerily silent this time of night. Ella forces herself to stay awake until she is sure her mother is asleep. She doesn't know what time it is, but as she stands outside her mother's bedroom, she can hear her soft snores. Ella drags her backpack quietly behind her as she opens the door and creeps to the bed.
Starting point is 00:13:43 The glow of the moon illuminates her mother's sleeping form. Her mouth is wide open, and there is a puddle of drool on the pillow. Ella watches her for several moments to make sure she doesn't wake up. when she doesn't even stir, Ella begins. She grabs the rope and gently ties her mother's right arm to the bed post. The left arm is trickier. Ella has to drag her mother's arm across the bed to reach it, which will surely wake her up. She ties her feet together first, gently pulling away the covers to reveal her mother's painted toes.
Starting point is 00:14:20 That done, she climbs onto the bed. Her mother moans and instinctively reaches across the bed. towards Ella. This is her chance. She seizes her wrist and ties it to the post as quickly as she can. Her mother begins to stir. Ella, is something wrong? Ella says nothing. She climbs off the bed and returns to her mother's side. She turns on the bedside lamp and watches her mother's eyes widen as she realizes what her daughter is done. Her voice is high-pitched, like how it gets when she sees a spider. I want to play Bobble. Ella replies. She drags her backpack over and begins unloading her supplies. Her mother cranes her neck, but it's impossible for her to see past the bed.
Starting point is 00:15:09 Honey, how about we play Bobble some other time, okay? It's sleep time now. There's a quiver in her voice. It sends a pleasant shiver down Ella's spine. No, we're going to play now. We're going to play Bobble gets the truth. What is that? Ella softly hums to herself as she looks over her tools and selects the knife first. I'll show you. She holds up the knife, and her mother immediately begins straining against the rope. Honey, you shouldn't have that. Put it back. But there is no command in her voice, only fear.
Starting point is 00:15:47 Let me go, please. I don't want to play this game. Too bad. Ella lifts the sleeve of her mother's shirt to reveal her pale, alarm. Ella, is this about not letting you watch Bobble? I'm sorry, okay? You can watch him next week. I promise. Are you sorry? Her mother nods her head so vigorously the bed shakes. I'm very sorry, darling. Now let Mommy go, okay? Ella recalls Bobble's instructions as she brings the knife to skin. Hold the arm down firmly and press the knife in as hard as you can. Don't be afraid. She watched in awe as blood spurted from the arm Bobble sliced with careful precision.
Starting point is 00:16:32 She ignores her mother's pleas and does as Bobble taught her. She is rewarded with a river of blood that trails down her mother's arm and drops under the carpet. Are you really sorry? She asks again. Yes! Yes, I am! Her mother shouts. Ella stares at her.
Starting point is 00:16:50 She seems to be telling the truth. Better try something else. Mommy. Yes, dear? Her mother rasps, meeting her gaze with wide pupils. Do parents lie? Her mother goes quiet. She seems to realize that she's been caught.
Starting point is 00:17:07 No. Ella narrows her eyes. She whips off the bed sheets and brings the knife to her mother's stomach. She applies more pressure this time, and her mother screams. Blood pools around her on the bed. Want to try that again? It's what her teachers say to her. when she forgets to add sir or ma'am to the end of her sentence.
Starting point is 00:17:30 The one time she dared to reply with a brazen shake of the head, she was given lines. Now her mother does the same. She shakes her head back and forth, words of whispered pleading leaving her lips. Do parents lie? Ella readjusts the knife to make a vertical cut this time, right down the middle of the stomach.
Starting point is 00:17:52 She wonders if she can cut all the way through, and find the organs inside like Bobble did. He had warned against going too fast, too soon, though, so she didn't try going that deep. Not yet. Bobble said to savor the fun, and she intended to. Her mother screams again, louder this time. She looks away, tears making tracks down her cheeks.
Starting point is 00:18:16 When she finally catches her breath, she whispers. Yes, what? Ella's voice remains calm, controlled. parents lie. Ella smiles. She sees her mother relax slightly, probably thinking that Ella is finished, but she's just getting started. What have you lied to me about? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:18:41 Ella, please, just let me go, sweetie. We can talk about this. We are talking, and for once, I know I'm getting the truth. Mother pleads like Bobble's friend. Ella ignores it, like Bobble did. She thinks about what to do next and relinquishes the knife. That's a good girl. Now untie, please.
Starting point is 00:19:09 Ella shakes her head. She picks up the hammer and rusty nails from the tool kit in the kitchen. Bobbles said this was his favorite part. Ella has been itching to try it. Her mother goes completely still, as Ella steadies a nail against the flesh of her unmarred arm. Ella, please, I'm begging you. Don't do this. Then don't lie. When I ask you a question, tell me the truth.
Starting point is 00:19:36 Ella leans closer. She stares into her mother's face. Her mother refuses to look at her. Her eyes remain on the hammer in her hand, fear written all over her face. Is it my fault, Daddy left? Her mother looks at her then, a quick glance full of mingled pity and terror. Of course not. But her reaction comes too quick, sounds too practiced. That's a lie, Ella says. She watches her mother's eyes widen as she puts her practice to good use and bangs the hammer against the nail.
Starting point is 00:20:09 She hits it right on the head, and it slices through flesh with a satisfying squish. It remains embedded in the arm for a moment before toppling over and onto the floor. Ella frowns. She grabs another nail and sets it up to try again. Ella, please! I was just trying to protect you. Please let me go. Please! Do you ever wish I wasn't born? Her mother gasps. No, I... Lie. Ella interrupts her. She has always known that she is a burden to her mother, even though her mother would never admit it.
Starting point is 00:20:41 Bobble said the truth hurts, but Ella doesn't feel sore about her mother's lie. She feels vindicated. She feels powerful. She is not a little girl to be protected. She is a force to be feared. This time, she strikes bone. Her mother's scream fills her ears until it suddenly cuts off. Ella frowns, looking at her mother's pale, sweaty face. She's gone still.
Starting point is 00:21:06 Bobble said that might happen. Ella sighs. She stares at the nail embedded in her mother's arm, at the blood sprayed across the white sheets. She watches her mother's chest rise and fall, and suddenly, She is bored. When Bobbill's friend fainted, he was only out for a few minutes.
Starting point is 00:21:24 But how long will her mother take? As the minutes stretch on, Ella becomes more impatient. Finally, her mother begins to stir. Ella puts down the hammer and switches back to the knife. She climbs over her mother and sits on her bloodied stomach. Her mother gasps. It's only one word, yet there's so much emotion behind it. Pain, betrayal, surprise.
Starting point is 00:21:48 Ella pats her mother's cheek. Almost done, mommy. Just one more question. Babel said this part is very important. She waits a beat to make sure her mother is fully conscious. When their eyes meet, Ella nods with satisfaction. Then she asks her final question. Will you tell on me?
Starting point is 00:22:09 Bobble said, there could only be one answer to this question that's not a lie. He gave specific instructions on what to do if the wrong answer was given. Ella's mother shakes her head. She whimpers. No. Ella wags her finger in her mother's face. Lie. She pronounces as she raises the knife to her mother's chest.
Starting point is 00:22:32 Next day, Ella walks past her mother's bedroom without glancing at the corpse on the bed. She collapses on the couch, grabs the remote, and watches her friend Bobble as he teaches about something called Campbellism.
