Starting point is 00:00:00 The Hulu original series Furious is coming to Disney Plus, starring Emmy Rossum. Furious follows FBI agent Alice Black on the hunt for a mysterious and calculating serial killer. Both walk their own paths toward justice, and as their lives start to intertwine, the line between right and wrong begins to blur. Don't miss the three-episode premiere of the Hulu original series Furious on July 27th, only on Hulu on Disney Plus. Sound like a harsh, wordless whisper stopped me on the trail. Hello? I called.
Starting point is 00:00:42 My flashlight beam sliced between the nearest trees as I searched for the source of the noise. No answer. I resumed walking, picking up the pace. Roots and rocks made it impossible for me to point the flashlight anywhere, but the trail as I moved. Something whistled from the trees on my right. I whipped the flashlight that way. It wasn't a bird whistle. It sounded human. Who's out there?
Starting point is 00:01:08 Non-answering sounds continued. The rustling of branches shifting in the breeze. A nightbird singing some distance away. The far-off call of a wolf. A strange urge seized me. I wanted to tilt my head moonward and answer the wolf's howl with one of my own. I wanted to howl out all of my regrets and frustrations and fears. To cleanse myself through lungful exertions.
Starting point is 00:01:32 To repent for all my failures, especially those involving Tasha. I'd been too chicken shit to propose, and now it was too late. No, she's still alive. You just have to find her. Successfully suppressing the urge to shout at the moon, I resumed walking once again. Before I'd made it four steps, I felt a snort of hot breath on the back of my neck. My wolf-like urge was completely gone now, obliterated by a new one. Every instinct screamed at me to turn around to see whatever was behind me, but I didn't. I kept walking back abnormally straight, struggling to swallow.
Starting point is 00:02:09 As I waited for another breath, I wondered if this was what had happened to Tasha. I wondered if she had heard strange whistles and shouts and felt a breath on the back of her neck before. Before what? I still didn't know. I just knew she had never come out of these woods. I'd spent the last two weeks suppressing any memories that tried to surface, not wanting to feel the heartbreak all over again. but now, even when I wanted to, I couldn't produce any recollections. The only thing I could ever focus on was her eyes. Tasha had the most unique and gorgeous eyes I'd ever seen. The left one was ice blue around the edges of the iris,
Starting point is 00:02:48 darkening to ocean blue near the pupil. Her right eye was similarly patterned, but green instead of blue. I imagined those eyes widening with terror moments before she was abducted. Abducted? You're grasping at straws. She's gone. With a moment of relief, I realized the distraction had worked. I no longer felt that near implacable urge to turn around,
Starting point is 00:03:11 and there hadn't been another snort of breath on my neck. Better hope it's still there, I told myself. I didn't have to wait long to find out. Walker, a voice hissed from the woods to my left. Hearing my name, I looked that way, flashlight beam following my vision. The beam reflected off two eyes in the darkness, and a rhododendron bush. The reflective discs stared at me from about five feet off the ground.
Starting point is 00:03:36 I noticed the antlers jutting from the animal's head, sharp tips, six of them. The animal pushed through the bush in a series of jerky movements, revealing the body of a deer, but there was something wrong with it. The legs had too many joints, all facing the wrong way. Its chest looked bloated and deformed, and its eyes were too close together on the front of its head instead of the sides. For a moment, neither of us moved. What the hell are you?
Starting point is 00:04:05 The deer reared back onto its hind legs, joints popping and cracking as it settled into a standing position. The hooves at the end of its four legs stretched and separated from each other, becoming pincor-like appendages. Beneath the fur, its bloated abdomen roiled, as if something inside was trying to get out, something big. It darted toward me on its hind legs, screaming, front-facing eyes reflecting the flashlight beam until I whipped it away to sprint down the trail. I tripped on a rock, barely keeping my feet. The shrieking creature gained. I could feel it behind me, reaching out with those pincer hooves. Huffing, I pulled ahead, legs burning. Reaching a downward slope,
Starting point is 00:04:45 I spotted the cabin just 60 yards away. I covered the distance quickly, but so did the creature. I slammed the cabin's back door shut behind me, but didn't lock it as I darted away. In the kitchen, I ducked through an open door disguised as a wall panel, closing it behind me, and then climbing down a short ladder into the crawl space. As I crawled across the ground beneath the cabin, I heard the back door slam open. That was the cue. Now, now, now! I called, knowing the mic sewn into my shirt would pick up the transmission. The area around the cabin came alive with shouts, revving engines, and thudding boots. Reaching a panel in the wall, I shoved it open, squinting at the bright headlights shining on the cabin.
Starting point is 00:05:25 Several foundation vehicles had surrounded the place. Combat-ready men and women poured from them, joining those who'd been waiting nearby on foot. Rifle barrels shifted away from me as I got to my feet and ran to join my compatriots. Once I was clear, Lieutenant Amira gave the order to engage. Mobile task force members moved in unison toward the cabin's two doors. I watched, pulling on armor from the back of one vehicle.
Starting point is 00:05:50 I had wanted them to wait for me so I could join the capture team, but Amira had said, No time. You can either be the bait or be on the capture team, pick one. I had picked bait because I wanted to experience what I thought Tasha had been through. Even if I had no direct evidence, she'd been abducted by one of these creatures. The important part of me was being there for the interrogation once we got the creature back to Site 44. The damn things spoke English, even if it was just to whisper a name. Surely we could communicate with them, figure out what they'd done with Tasha and the other rescue workers who'd gone out
Starting point is 00:06:25 that day. As I secured my helmet strap, someone shouted from nearby. Movement! Sector 4! Yanking my rifle out of the cargo area, I spun in that direction. Another deer. This one with no antlers, seemed to be hovering a few feet above the ground, its legs jutting from its body parallel to the forest floor. I whipped my rifles built-in flashlight toward the thing, but not fast enough. It darted through the gloom between two bushes, allowing me the barest glimpse of movement beneath its body. for a moment that it was floating on a dark cloud, but I shook the notion off. Behind me, sounds of smashing, screaming, and gunfire erupted from the cabin, muffled by the walls. Amira ordered the backup team into the cabin. I continued scanning the woods with half a dozen others.
Starting point is 00:07:11 Flashlight beams jerked and swooped and criss-crossed. Twenty yards to my right, a deer ran across the driveway on its hind legs, four legs held straight out in front of it. The sight might have made me laugh under other circumstances. As it was, the bizarre spectacle only creeped me out. I got my flashlight on at a moment before it disappeared into the foliage. They're surrounding us. Des called, voice spiked with panic. We need to move. God damn it, Des, plunge your ass cheeks together. Mira said. Do not fire unless I get the... Deer creatures exploded from the woods all around. Some of them galloping, some of them running on their hind legs, some alternating between the two like a charging gorilla. All of them featured some
Starting point is 00:07:50 deformity in addition to those unnerving forward-facing eyes. Fire! squeezed the trigger, firing at an onrushing buck. Gunshots cracked through the forest all around. After scoring a few direct hits, the buck went down. I shifted and fired at a doe, but the creature sprang 20 feet into the air, flying toward me. Other creatures bounced forward, soaring toward us. Backpedaling, I fired at the creature, clipping it a moment before I dove away to avoid being crushed. The creature landed stiffly, hooves piercing the ground where I'd just been. Before I could get my weapon back up, I saw a creature land on a mirror, smashing him to the ground and collapsing his rib cage as all its weight traveled through its four legs and into the ballistic vest he wore. Blood shot from his nose and mouth
Starting point is 00:08:34 and gushing columns. Movement flashed toward me. The deer that had nearly smashed me. I shot it, blasting a bullet through one of its eyes. It collapsed on my shins. As I struggled to free my legs from the heavy creature, a scream drew my attention. I looked over to see a buck lunging forward with its antlers, piercing Elliot's face. It ran for several. It ran for several several yards with the man's limp body hanging from the antlers, his feet dragging between the creature's forelegs. Then it whipped the dead man at Irving, who was busy reloading his rifle. Elliot's legs smashed into Irving's head, sending him to the ground. The buck left like a mountain goat and came down with its four legs on the side of Irving's head, which collapsed
Starting point is 00:09:14 with a resounding crunch. Chaos ruled the area. I heard fewer and fewer gunshots, replaced by more and more screams. Another deer creature appeared nearby. I, and fixing on me before it sprang into the air. I tried to free my legs for a long moment before giving up and firing the rest of my magazine at the creature as it dropped out of the sky. It went limp, but the bullets hadn't changed its trajectory. It kept coming. I squirmed as much as I could, getting onto my side and tucking my head. The deer landed on me. The last thing I felt was something hard smashing into my head. I awoke with a start, scrambling for my gun as pain shot through my skull. By the time I got my rifle in hand,
Starting point is 00:09:57 Everything had come rushing back. I peered around for my spot on the ground between twin cones of headlights. Corpses littered the area around the cabin. All of them belonged to humans, my compatriots. I couldn't see a single deer creature corpse, including the two that had landed on me. They were all gone. After getting to my knees and changing to a fresh magazine, I touched my head, feeling a gash across my left temple.
Starting point is 00:10:22 Tacky blood covered that side of my skull. Putting all this together, I guessed what had happened. The creatures took their dead away, leaving all the people they'd killed. They thought I was one of them. I stood, stumbled, fell to my knees. After taking a couple of deep breaths and gathering myself, I stood again. This time, I only swayed. On unsteady legs, I made my way around the cabin, looking at all my dead compatriots.
Starting point is 00:10:50 There were a lot, but not all. At least ten were missing. Taken, I knew. That was what they did. They took people, like Tasha. Her different colored eyes flashed in my mind. I focused on them for a moment, trying to recall a memory. Any memory. I couldn't. Trying made my headache worse. I snorted in anger and stumbled to Amira's corpse, finding his small tablet miraculously intact in one cargo pocket. On it, I pulled up a map that showed all the tracking devices for the mission, just as I'd thought. Eleven of them were a few miles from the
Starting point is 00:11:24 cabin, clustered in a tight group, on the move. I pulled Amira's radio, contacted Captain Saunders, and gave him the sit rep. After a long pause, he said they had another task force en route, but they wouldn't arrive for another three hours. That was too long. I told Saunders, I would gather intel and report back if I could, before he could tell me to stand down. I turned the radio off. I gathered a few more supplies, including a satchel of explosives I was supposed to get clearance to use. I was beyond caring. All I wanted was to find Tasha, and if I couldn't, I would end things any way I could. After one more look at the tablet, I shoved the device into a vest pouch and hustled into the dark woods, going back the way I'd come when I was playing bait.
Starting point is 00:12:10 Now you're the one walking into a trap, I thought. The notion gave me pause until Tasha's eyes flashed to my mind again, followed by an imaginary explosion enveloping a herd of deer creatures. I picked up the pace with a grim smile. A glance at the tablet verified it. The group was just beyond the next rise, and what appeared to be a low clearing. They'd been there for 20 minutes, no longer moving. What were they doing?
Starting point is 00:12:39 Tablets safely stowed and rifle held ready. I crept up the ridge, scanning the woods. I placed each foot carefully so as not to make noise. Finally, I reached the crest and stopped behind a thick tree trunk to peer down into the clearing. A herd of deer grazed in the moonlit field, Son of a bitch, I raised the rifle, thumbing the fire select lever to automatic. I was going to sweep my barrel across them, blasting the fuckers all to hell.
Starting point is 00:13:06 If I needed the explosives, I wouldn't hesitate to use them. But I did hesitate. Something about the animals was off, or rather not off. They looked like regular deer, without the strange deformities I'd seen on all the others. At least all those I could see looked normal. They were more in the middle of the herd with their heads down, bodies blocked, by their brethren. Despite my simmering anger, I didn't want to kill any innocent animals. I'd been tricked, no closer to finding Tasha and the others than I had been hours ago, if they were even
Starting point is 00:13:37 alive. Sighing, I lowered my rifle. On some unseen signal, several animals in the middle of the herd raised their heads and looked toward me. In unison, they stood on their hind legs. This spooked the others, the regular deer. They scattered in a flurry of graceful bounding. As I raised my rifle again, movement in the branches above caught my attention. Whipping my head up, I saw a deer creature scurrying down the side of the tree on a series of dark tentacles jutting from its split-open belly. I loosed a howl filled with rage and regret. Before I could get my rifle up, the creature crashed into me, one of its tentacles jamming into my mouth, silencing my howl. I hit the ground hard but retained consciousness long enough to feel the
Starting point is 00:14:20 tentacle work its way down my throat. Pain shot out for my stomach, so powerful it ripped, consciousness away on a wave of terror. Starting point is 00:14:59 speaking gibberish, all guttural clicks, wet pops, and slithering noises. They seemed to pulse in time with the pain radiating from my stomach, fading only to increase again moments later. Wrenching my reluctant eyes open, I peered around for the source of the noise. But I was alone in a room with odd-looking walls, lying on a dirt floor in a fetal position. I could see no door, but there was what appeared to be a large window in one wall. Upon closer inspection between pulses of excruciating pain, I saw that it wasn't a window, at least not one that I could see through, nor did it reflect my surroundings. The walls look to be made of tightly interwoven vines, although not of any kind I'd ever seen. Their thick leaves looked like puzzle pieces that
Starting point is 00:15:45 slotted into each other to create a solid barrier. At regular intervals, lengths of thick vine glowed, casting enough illumination around the room for me to see by. Gasping in pain, I rolled onto all fours, the buzz of panic joining the gibbering voices as I glimpsed my hands. They were noticeably smaller, and my fingers had fused together in a mockery of the live-long and prosper hand sign from Star Trek. A thin layer of small, tan-colored hairs had sprouted along my hands and arms. Then I noticed that something was jutting from my face, easily visible in my line of sight. Shaking with disbelief, I raised my deformed hands to my face and felt the protuberance that was my mouth and nose, a snout, covered in more hair. Tottering to my feet, I found that I
Starting point is 00:16:31 wasn't wearing shoes. My feet were shrinking, and they had split down the middle. My toes had been replaced by the beginnings of hard black growths. Hoves! I screamed! I screamed to drown out the constant and undulating voices in my head. I attacked the walls, but they were as solid as concrete. I shifted my rage to the knot window, but the glass-like material held steady. A sound like rustling leaves drew my attention between screams. I turned to see that a hole had opened in the wall next to the window. The vines separated in an oval. A deer creature stepped through on its hind legs. Growling, I rushed at the hole, knocking the creature aside with uncommon ease. I thought it was due to my transformation, some newfound strength. I would find out later that I was wrong about that.
Starting point is 00:17:16 Lurching out of the room, I found myself in a corridor lined with windows like the one in the room I just escaped. Wasting no time, I ran down the dirt floor corridor as the voices in my head grew louder than ever. But I soon noticed that from this side, I could see through the windows. As I sprinted past, I saw my compatriots, the survivors from the cabin. In this room, Alvarado sat strapped to a chair, the top of his skull removed to expose his brain. Two deer creatures stood behind him, holding inscrutable devices with the black tendrils sprouting from their split-open bellies. The man screamed as they poked around in his brain. In another room, a man named Knight lay on a table.
Starting point is 00:17:56 His abdomen split open. The pulse of his heart and expansion of his lungs told me he was alive. Arranged above his unconscious body was another deer creature, holding itself up with black tentacles as it dribbled some sort of bright white liquid into his body from an unseen orifice. A glimpse through the next window revealed a man named Arnold in the middle of transforming into one of them. He pressed half-formed hooves to his head as he cried in pain. I sprinted past a room in which pierce lay. His limbs severed.
Starting point is 00:18:25 The wounds cauterized. He scrambled around the chamber on his nubs, a large creature like a mix between a centipede and a snake chasing him. Two deer creatures stood by, watching intently. Knowing I was being pursued, I continued to run, even as my body changed, and the screaming voices in my head grew louder. I passed room after room where my comrades were being dissected studied and transformed into abominations. Despite the horror of it all, I couldn't overlook the
Starting point is 00:18:53 similarities between this and what went on at the foundation. The deer that had come into my room seemed to be calling out as it pursued me down the corridor. I couldn't tell how I knew that, because there were no spoken words. Instead, one voice in my head seemed to rise above the others. The noises it was making morphed, becoming something closer to words, even though I still couldn't understand them. My feet no longer felt like feet at all. My legs were skinnier and featured more joints, but somehow I could still run. Ahead, the corridor dead ended at a vine wall, but there was an opening next to the last window on the right. Thinking in a trap, I decided I wouldn't take the bait. I would turn around and fight. I would kill or be killed. Then I saw what was inside the room,
Starting point is 00:19:37 a pile of supplies that had been stripped for me and my compatriots. And there, near the top, was the satchel charge I'd taken. I leaped through the hole and snatched the snatchel up with my changing hands. As I darted toward the corner of the room, I fumbled with the control panel. I had just enough dexterity left to arm and trigger the device. Reaching the corner, I spun around to see the deer creature that had chased me down the hall. It stepped inside hesitantly on its hind legs. Four legs held out, as if in a calming gesture. Something thrummed through me at the sight of the creature, but I ignored it, focusing my attention on the device. I hoped some more of the things would show up so I could take them out with me. If not, one was better than none. I armed the bomb,
Starting point is 00:20:24 disabled the safety feature, and put my two hooves on either side of the switch. No need to mess with a timer. Disgust and anger roiled through me at the sight of my expanding abdomen, which had torn through my shirt during the run. It was covered with a pattern of white and tan hair. My pants barely clung to my hips, despite the change to a body, incongruent with the garment. Ready to die, I looked up at the approaching deer creature, just as it dropped to all fours on the other side of the pile. Its bizarre forward-facing eyes made me clench my jaw. Then I noticed something odd about those eyes. Pain pulsed from my stomach. The voices in my head grew louder with them, but one voice in particular was the loudest. And to my utter shock, it was a familiar voice, speaking words I could understand.
Starting point is 00:21:10 stop fighting it. Tasha's voice said gently as I looked into the deer creature's eyes. One of them was brilliantly blue. The other was verdant green. I froze, staring, hooves gripping the switch. The deer creature spoke again, only this time she did so in images. Memories beamed directly into my mind. Memories of our time together, before the disappearance has started, before Tasha, a foundation agent embedded in the local police station, had gone, gone out with other rescue workers and disappeared, along with most of the others. Memories of late nights and early mornings and laughter and comfort and wonder and awe at finding each other.
Starting point is 00:21:50 Overcome, I dropped the device to the floor. Stop fighting it, she said. It's okay. I took her advice. I welcomed the transformation. And an explosion of welcoming voices lit up the pleasure centers of my brain. My new brain. I could understand them all, even though they all spoke.
Starting point is 00:22:10 at once. The pain left my stomach, replaced by a sense of contentment that pulsed through me in euphoric waves. Contentment sourced in belonging, and community. I'd been given a second chance, a chance to spend my life with Tasha. My transformation finished quickly. Tasha approached. I dropped to all fours and looked down the length of my snout into two brilliant eyes. I would know those eyes anywhere. is an anomalous branch of the deer family.
