Starting point is 00:00:28 It was love at first sight, for her and for him. Unfortunately for her, he was looking in a different direction. They met on June 7th at the Foundation Researcher Orientation. She was sipping a cup of shitty coffee just for something to do when he walked in. His blue eyes scanned the room and rested on hers for a brief second, and her breath hitched. He was tall, with dark, wavy hair and a confident gate, just her type. She kept her eyes on him as he sat next to a pretty blonde and said something that made her laugh. Rachel tightened her grip on the cup and made her way to the seat next to him. He didn't even notice her when she sat down, but the blonde gave her a friendly smile. Then the lights dimmed and the first presentation began. By the end of the day, all she knew was his name.
Starting point is 00:01:28 Julius. He'd given her a disinterested glance when he introduced himself. The blonde, Haley, was much more enthusiastic. And despite that, Rachel liked her. When Haley asked for her number, Rachel gave it. And when they went out for coffee a few days later, the pull of friendship was undeniable. So, how about that Julius guy? Rachel said casually as she brought her latte to her lips.
Starting point is 00:01:54 He was cute, right? And did you see those biceps? I figured I'd only see nerdy guys there, but damn. A wave of jealousy rose, over Rachel, but she tamped it down with a smile. Yeah, he was something else. What department do you want to work in? Rachel blinked at the topic change.
Starting point is 00:02:13 Her mind still on Julius. Oh, um, I don't know. I want the antimemetics department. I've always been fascinated with memory. And the idea that we can just erase things boggles my mind. Rachel nodded as Haley gushed on, but she couldn't help wondering what department Julius would be in. As it turned out, Julius and Haley were both assigned to the anti-mimetics department,
Starting point is 00:02:39 while Rachel was sent off to surrealistics. She didn't see Julius much, but she got regular updates from Haley. While Rachel adjusted to life with her boring office mate, Haley and Julius went to the Polynesian Isles for a research trip. During one of their regular calls, Haley smiled into the camera while gushing about the beautiful landscapes, while Rachel searched the background for Julius. Her heart stopped when she finally spotted him, tanned and shirtless, with that bright, beautiful smile.
Starting point is 00:03:10 How's the rest of the team? Rachel asked, keeping her voice as neutral as possible. Oh, they're great. Dr. Verity and I are learning so much. Doctor? Oh, you mean Julius? Haley nodded. I got in trouble for calling him by his first name, so he's Dr. Verity now. And everyone else calls me Dr. Rivera, which sounds so official and stuffy.
Starting point is 00:03:32 but I secretly like it. Haley laughed, and Rachel didn't miss the way Julius looked in her direction, his smile widening. What Rachel wouldn't give to be there with him, to have him look at her like that. You okay? Rachel blinked and refocused her gaze on her friend. Yeah, sorry, I just zoned out. All this paperwork is getting to me.
Starting point is 00:03:54 Speaking of which, I should get back to it. Okay, well, try not to work too hard. Wish you were here. With a final smile. Haley disappeared, leaving Rachel staring at the blank screen, wishing more than anything that she was. Things only got worse when they returned. Haley showed up at Rachel's office the day after they got back and gave her a string of Tahitian pearls and the news that she and Julius would be sharing an office. And there's something else. Rachel clutched the pearls in her hand, dread settling in her stomach.
Starting point is 00:04:28 What? Julius kind of, well, he asked me out. out. Rachel leaned back in her seat. And you said yes? I know it's crazy considering we'll be working together and everything, but I got to know him on the trip, and there's something about him that I just, I don't know. He's so nice, and he treats me really well, which is something I haven't found in a guy in a long time. I figured I'd give him a chance. Plus, he's not bad to look at. Not bad at all, Rachel murmured. She tamped down her jealousy and pasted on a smile. You'll have to let me know how it goes. Haley beamed. I will. And she did. She told Rachel all about their first date, how we took her to a winery and a walk along the beach at sunset, how they ended up holding hands and even sharing a kiss outside her door. Rachel put her acting skills to the test and pretended to be ecstatic while she was withering away inside.
Starting point is 00:05:29 was happy for her friend, but she would have been a lot happier if she were dating anyone but Julius. She hoped her jealousy would recede over time, but the closer Haley and Julius became, the more time Rachel spent with him too, and the more she talked to him, the more she liked him. Haley was right. He was nice. He treated Haley like a queen, and he was the most romantic guy Rachel had ever met. He beamed at Haley like she was the center of his universe, and he was constantly showering her with flowers and gushing about what a great woman she was. Haley would jokingly roll her eyes, but Rachel knew she loved the attention. At first anyway. When Haley was reassigned to aid in the development of new amnestic drugs, the cracks started to show. She became more
Starting point is 00:06:18 invested in her research than Julius, and Julius confided to Rachel that he was jealous, jealous of not having Haley's full attention, and jealous of her moving on to bigger and better things. I'm happy for her, you know, he said over his fourth pint of logger. But I can't help but wonder why I didn't get the position. I'm just as smart as she is. Rachel nodded and took a sip of her margarita. Of course you are. Maybe you're just too vulnerable in the position that you're in. Yeah, yeah, that might be it. Or maybe it was random. She highly doubted that was the case, but she nodded again.
Starting point is 00:06:55 Maybe. I wouldn't worry too much about it. She placed her hand over his and left it there for a second, letting his warmth seep through her fingers. Julius looked down at her hand, then gave a humorless little laugh. Easy for you to say. You don't seem like the jealous type. Rachel's lips thinned, and she looked away while he chugged the rest of his drink. Should she tell him? Now was as good a time as he. any. I get jealous sometimes, she said quietly. What's that? She opened her mouth to repeat the words when Julius's phone rang, the screen lighting up with an image of Haley. She must be done with work.
Starting point is 00:07:33 Guess that means I should head out. See you later, Dr. Fry. He slammed some bills on the table and put the phone to his ear as he walked out of the restaurant. Rachel still had half a margarita left. She downed it and ordered another. Two months after being reassigned to the Amnestics Project, Haley received another promotion. She was tasked to oversee the design and production of her new amnestic drugs, which she'd been making incredible progress on. Although Haley was busier than ever, she always made time for her weekly lunches with Rachel. Rachel was about to knock on her office door when she heard raised voices inside. She immediately recognized Julius's low baritone. We need to make time for us, Haley, he said, his voice pleading.
Starting point is 00:08:19 You've been working too hard. You need a break. If I needed a break, I would take one. She snapped back. I'm just trying to look out for you. If you don't slow down, you're going to burn out. If I don't work out the kinks in this new drug, I'll never get another promotion. You don't need another promotion. You just got this one.
Starting point is 00:08:38 Unlike you, Julius, I'm not happy staying at the bottom. Rachel stifled her gasp with her hands. That was a low blow, even for Haley. Julius remained quiet, and Rachel could picture the hurt in his eyes. Could we at least have lunch today? I can't. I've got a meeting. Her blatant lie caught Rachel off guard. How could her friend be so ruthless?
Starting point is 00:09:01 Fine. Julia sighed. I'll just talk to you later then. Rachel scurried down the hall and waited until Julius left to make her appearance. Haley smiled up at her and jumped to her feet. God, I need to get out of this office. You ready? Rachel merely nodded and followed her friend out of the room. This episode is brought to you by

When she asked about him, Haley responded, Oh, he's fine, then changed the topic. As far as Rachel knew, they were still together. But Haley didn't seem to know that, and Julius, it seemed, was becoming less sure of that himself. Rachel missed him, but she forced herself to leave him alone,
Starting point is 00:10:46 at least while all the drama was blowing over. After, well, she would see. But when she spotted him in the cafeteria, she couldn't help but call his name. He smiled when he saw her, but he looked tired, and his smile didn't reach his eyes. He dropped his tray on the table across from her and slumped into a seat. It's been a while, she forced some cheer into her voice, but it sounded fake. His blue eyes narrowed and he leaned forward. Have you heard from her?
Starting point is 00:11:16 Haley? Of course. Um, yeah, we talk. He snorted. That's more than we do. She hasn't answered a single text in almost two weeks. What's with that? Rachel squirmed, suddenly wishing she had kept her mouth shut when she saw him.
Starting point is 00:11:32 She's just been really busy with her big project. I'm sure it's nothing. I get that she's busy, but not one text. Have you tried talking to her? No, but I text her every day and she never responds. Rachel sighed and ignored his whiny tone. Julius, you have to talk to her. Maybe she's just waiting for you to quit texting and start talking.
Starting point is 00:11:54 Or she's ghosting me. Julius leaned forward and collapsed his head in his hands. Rachel reached across the table and touched his arm. Her fingers lingering a little too long. Listen, Julius. You know she has that big presentation coming up. She's probably just preoccupied with that. She barely responds to my texts.
Starting point is 00:12:14 Just go talk to her, and I'm sure you can sort it all out. He lifted his head slightly. You think so? Yeah, and maybe things will be better after the presentation. He nodded. Yeah, maybe. I guess we'll find out. Rachel beamed that her friend as Haley stood before the small crowd explaining her research.
Starting point is 00:12:36 Haley hated public speaking, and she'd been dreading her talk for weeks. But Rachel was proud of her as she spoke about her breakthrough. Um, and yeah, that's the work we've done on identity erasure amnestics. Do we have any questions? Rachel caught her eye and gave her a thumbs up. Haley responded with a relieved smile, but worry lined her face as a line began to form in front of the microphone, a line that included Julius. Rachel had seen him at the back of the room when she sat down, his lips drawn in a tight line. She continued watching him as Haley answered the first question. His eyes were focused
Starting point is 00:13:14 straight ahead, and there was a determined look about him that made Rachel shift in her seat. There was definitely still tension between them, but surely he wouldn't do anything to sabotage Haley. He looked her dead in the eye as he approached the microphone. You mentioned earlier you had strong success with erasing memories of most forms of relationships. Could you explain on which relationships you had issues with? Haley frowned. Which kind of relationships? I'm not exactly sure what you mean.
Starting point is 00:13:43 Like, say, twins. Her face fell. Oh, like twins. Rachel nearly gasped. Julius knew she'd had difficulty with twins. Why would he bring that up now, in front of everyone? Or other forms of intimate or familiar relationships, he said calmly. Well, we did have issues with twins.
Starting point is 00:14:04 They, um, they have a few issues with, um, could you speak up? Haley's eyes narrowed a fraction at Julius's demanding tone, but she spoke louder. They would sometimes overflow into untargeted neural pathways, okay? Can you elaborate? Rachel looked between Julius, his face calm but deadly, and Haley. Her hands bawled into fists. People forgot what their own face looked like, but using amnestics to make twins forget each other is... Did the new amnestic experience similar failures in any circumstances?
Starting point is 00:14:38 Julius interrupted. No, just the twins. Next question. As Julius walked away, Haley turned away from her microphone and took three deep breaths. Rachel was torn between comforting Haley and comforting Julius. But there was nothing she could do for her friend now, so she followed Julius out of the room. Before she could even say anything, he turned and smiled at her. That went well.
Starting point is 00:15:02 Rachel paused. What? I noticed that she forgot some points during her talk, so I wanted to help her gather her train of thought. You were helping her? Of course. What else would I be doing? He cocked his head, and a stray curl fell onto his forehead.
Starting point is 00:15:18 Rachel resisted the urge to brush it away. Right. Yeah, good job. Thanks. He patted her shoulder as he strutted down the hallway. Rachel remained where she was, more confused than ever. It certainly seemed like Julius had malicious intent, but he wasn't that kind of guy, was he? No, he wouldn't do that. She must have read into things.
Starting point is 00:15:41 It was just a misunderstanding. And now that her presentation was over, Haley could deal with her relationship with Julie. and maybe finally end it. Haley was jittery when they had lunch in the cafeteria the next day. While her presentation had gone relatively smoothly, she still had to do a demonstration for the Ethics Committee. Rachel was hesitant to put more stress on her plate,
Starting point is 00:16:06 but she couldn't help asking, Do you, have you been receiving messages from Julius? Haley frowned. So we already talked to you? So you're getting his texts? I. Of course I am. Rachel shrugged. and gave her a soft smile.
Starting point is 00:16:22 I just wanted to make sure. I thought he was being stupid, but better safe than sorry. He can't fathom a reason why someone would ghost him. Haley replied with a roll of her eyes. But still, he's reaching out, and you're just ignoring him. Haley put down her sandwich inside. I don't know. I just...
Starting point is 00:16:41 I can't stand it. I can't fucking stand him anymore. The surge of hope coursed through Rachel, quickly followed by shame. She was Haley's friend. and Julius's. She shouldn't be trying to break them up. I mean, he's just trying to understand what's going on with you, Haley.
Starting point is 00:16:58 He doesn't care about me. He uses me as some excuse to grandstand and feel good about himself. Did you hear him during my talk? I did, but he knew I couldn't answer those questions well. He knew that there were edge cases I hadn't covered yet, and he just shouted them out like no one important was listening. And you know what he said when I confronted him about it? He did it to help you.
Starting point is 00:17:20 He's been stuck doing low-level testing. I know he wants his name in big letters on a new project. He hates that I'm ahead of him. You should hear him trying to arrange a date, saying I work too much, that he can help me relax. He wants me to lean on him like a crutch. He's so blind to it that when I ignore him, he thinks there's a goddamn anomaly. He's so persistent. Then why don't you tell him that?
Starting point is 00:17:42 Rachel? Yeah. Have you never had to break up a relationship? Rachel gave an involuntary shudder. Of course I have. Then you should know how hard it is to tell someone they're trying too hard, or that they're trying for the wrong reasons, or that you want someone who had been so nice to you for so long to get out of your life.
Starting point is 00:18:02 So you don't want people to be nice to you? That's not what I'm saying, and you know it. But you just said you wanted him to stop. Just shut up. This isn't your ex we're talking about. Rachel pursed her lips. Is he an ex if you never tell him you've broken up? I'm leaving.
Starting point is 00:18:19 Haley slid her tray off the table and marched out of the cafeteria. Rachel sighed. Haley was just stressed. She would sort everything out after her demonstration. Things would go back to the way they were, with Haley and Julius adoring each other, and Rachel looking on with envy. That's how things were supposed to be,
Starting point is 00:18:38 no matter how much she hated it. Rachel waited to hear news of either Haley's demonstration or her relationship with Julius, but her friend seemed to be avoiding her. It was Julius who invited her for lunch a few days later by asking if he could interview her. As soon as they sat down, Julius pulled something from his bag and set it on the table. Rachel frowned. Oh, you even brought a recorder.
Starting point is 00:19:04 I thought interview was a coy way of asking if I wanted to grab lunch. Julius shrugged. Sorry about that. Unfortunately, this is official business. So you're not asking me about Haley? I am. That's why it's official business. You're kidding.
Starting point is 00:19:21 She's not answering my texts, my calls, and when I went to her office, I already told you. That's called the silent treatment, Julius. But she stared right through me, like I wasn't even there. Rachel glanced up from the menu. Oh. You've seen amnestized people before. There's that look in their eyes, like an emptiness. Uh-huh.
Starting point is 00:19:42 You can see why I'm worried. I do, yeah. Exactly, which is why I need you to talk to her. I mean, even if she did get wiped, please, I need to go back and see if I can see if anything sparked this. I only know so much. I'm not in her head and, well, I'm not anywhere close to her. He hung his head in his hands, and Rachel's heart went out to him. Rachel didn't know what it was like to be ignored like that, and she couldn't imagine how painful it would be. Fine, I'll talk to her.
Starting point is 00:20:13 Thank you so much. Julia smiled and abruptly got up from the table. switching off the recorder. You're not staying? No, I've got to get back to work. Let me know how it goes. Rachel watched him disappear just as their drinks arrived. He didn't even leave money this time.

Scotia Bank, you're richer than you think. It didn't take long for Rachel to confirm Julius's theory. Haley was waiting for her in her office when she returned from lunch. Hey, where have you been? Haley's tone was light, and she looked more relaxed than she had in weeks. I was with Julius.
Starting point is 00:21:44 Haley cocked her head. Who? Rachel's stomach sank, but she tried again. Julius. Sorry. I don't know who that is. Should I? You should probably know your own boyfriend, yes. Rachel snapped. Haley blinked.
Starting point is 00:21:59 My what? Your boyfriend, Julius. Haley's confusion only deepened. I'm sorry. Who are we talking about? Julius. Rachel repeated. The guy who is crazy in love with you, even though you don't seem to care about him at all.
Starting point is 00:22:16 Haley gave a confused laugh. I can assure you, Rachel, no one is in love with me. Are you feeling okay? I don't know. Haley, when you did your demonstration the other day, what did you demonstrate on? Myself. Rachel Bitterlip. Why would you do that?
Starting point is 00:22:35 I don't remember. I can't remember what I've forgotten either. But that's a good thing, isn't it? It means it worked. Yeah, I guess it did. I'm actually not feeling that well. Can I talk to you later? Sure, no problem. Let me know if you need anything.
Starting point is 00:22:54 With a final glance behind her, Haley was gone. Rachel sank into her desk chair as one emotion after another rolled through her. She really did it. She erased Julius from her mind. But how could she do that to him? He loved her so much, didn't he? She couldn't help but think about how he'd behaved at Haley's presentation, the coldness in his voice as he asked his questions. But no, he was just helping her. That's what boyfriends do.
Starting point is 00:23:21 But clearly, now he couldn't be her boyfriend anymore. But could he be Rachel's? She wouldn't even have to worry about hurting Haley's feelings now. Maybe this was the perfect situation. Julius might need some time to get over Haley, but then Rachel could finally be with him. He could see her instead of Haley. He would love her. A smile broke out on her face, and it only dampened when she realized
Starting point is 00:23:47 she'd have to be the one to tell him about Haley. He wouldn't take that well. With a sigh, Rachel got up and walked over to Julius's office. He glanced up when she walked in, anticipation written all over his face. Well? Rachel hesitated. She couldn't tell him the truth. At least, not all of it.
Starting point is 00:24:06 You were right. She must have somehow wiped you from her brain. His face fell. What? Is it reversible? Rachel stepped closer and crouched in front of him. I don't think so, she said gently. Oh my God, what am I going to do?
Starting point is 00:24:23 He wailed. Now I have no one. Rachel froze with her hand halfway to his shoulder. You have me. But Julius didn't even seem to hear her. Maybe I can win her back. Make her remember me somehow. This can't be the end.
Starting point is 00:24:37 It can't. It's not fair. She gets to take my heart and prove her career and then just leave me in the dust like I never existed. How can she do that? He didn't look at Rachel as he spoke. It was like she wasn't even there, and in that moment something clicked. Julius?
Starting point is 00:24:54 He didn't acknowledge her. He just kept wailing about being alone and stuck at the bottom of the totem pole. Rachel thought she didn't know what it was like to have someone not see you, but she'd known for a long time because Julius never saw her. And he never would. She was nobody to him, even with Haley out of the picture. Anger bubbled in her stomach as she looked down at him. weeping and clutching his face.
Starting point is 00:25:18 How could she have ever thought things would be different? Why did she even want them to be? Haley was right about him all along. She deserved someone better, someone who wasn't using her to climb the career ladder, someone who wasn't jealous of her success. And Rachel deserved better too. Better than this sniveling, pathetic excuse for a man.
Starting point is 00:25:37 She was right, wasn't she? You weren't helping her at that presentation. You were trying to humiliate her. He peaked at her through his fingers. What does that have to do with anything? Rachel stood with a sneer on her lips. You're an asshole, Julius. She was right to forget you.
Starting point is 00:25:53 I only wish I could do the same. He made a noise like a wounded animal as she swept from the room. She never looked back.
