Starting point is 00:00:06 The body has been here for a good while, several hours, perhaps a day. I squat and lean in close to the corpse. Female. Age is between 33 and 38. Mixed heritage. Black dress blouse with khaki pants. White lab coat now stained red with blood. Blunt force trauma to the head is most likely the cause of death.
Starting point is 00:00:29 The area around the right temple appears to be caved in, which means considerable force was used. The angle of the blow, however, suggests the killer was the same height, or only slightly taller than the deceased. I explain all of this to my less than enthused handlers. Yeah, we know that already. Agent Ortonz, says. Her irritation on full display. Tell us something we don't know.
Starting point is 00:00:54 Oh, I'd love to, Agent Ortense. But I'm going to need a little more data before I start jumping to any conclusions. I push my fedora back and rubbed. my smooth forehead. Then I slide my hat back into place. Straightening my suit jacket, I look about the interrogation room inside. So, when are you two overpaid babysitters going to take me to the other body? Orton's frowns. She doesn't like me. She doesn't like any of our little mannequin troop. Her lip curls up in a sneer of disgust as she glances at her partner. Agent Roxbury shrugs. He's not a man of many words.
Starting point is 00:01:34 Ortonce stares up at the ceiling as if the stained fiberglass tiles will give her the answers she seeks. Okay, how'd you know about the second body? she asks. I know the question pains her. Humans like Ortaunts always want to have the upper hand. They want to believe they hold the cards and anomalies like my mannequin compatriots and me are only here to serve them and their goals, which isn't wholly incorrect, just misguided at the least, and flat out bigoted at the most. Agent Roxbury makes a clicking noise with his tongue, and I realize I never answered the question. Ah yes, how do I know about this second body? Excellent question. I circle the corpse. If I had eyes, they'd be hunting for every little detail and clue, but I don't have eyes,
Starting point is 00:02:24 so all of the stimuli humans take for granted must be gathered, sorted, and sifted through whatever passes for a brain inside my plastic head. Then, Once it is all collated, my whatever brain presents me with an answer. This is Dr. Agnes, yes? Orton's glares, the nods. Roxbury just shrugs. Okay, well, everyone knows that Dr. Agnes and Dr. Whitaker eat lunch together almost every day. There are rare exceptions like vacations, holidays, general emergencies,
Starting point is 00:02:58 and random site evacuations, but, in general, they dined together from noon to 1.30 every workday. An hour and a half lunch must be nice. Orton's is a bitter woman. I am unsure why they assigned her to me. Roxbury, of course, is of no consequence. He's as interchangeable as a coat rack, so he barely warrants any extra worry or consideration. But Orton's is going to be a problem.
Starting point is 00:03:25 Listen, Agent Orton's. You foundation folk woke me up, gave me the briefest of briefings, all so I could assist with your little murder investigation. I pulled the pack of smokes out of my suit jacket, tap one out, and light it with the zippo they provided me. What the hell? You don't even have a mouth! How the hell are you going to smoke that? Orton snaps. I don't know why they indulge you. Because I'm the best at my job. I act like I'm taking a drag off the smoke, which I can't because, as much as I hate to admit it, Orton's is right.
Starting point is 00:04:01 I don't have a mouth. How am I talking? How can they hear me? Because I'm an animated mannequin. The rules of normalcy do not apply. I pretend to take a few drags, then drop the cigarette on the floor and mash it out with my shoe. Seriously? Ortonz growls. The second body?
Starting point is 00:04:20 Dr. Whitaker's body? Where is it? The agents look at each other. Then Orton's shakes her head and walks out of the interrogation room. Come with me. I slip past Agent Roxbury as his eyes, dull and bored like always. Follow me until I'm out in the hallway. Two security guards take up places on either side of the interrogation room, and I give them a friendly hat tip as I trail
Starting point is 00:04:46 after Agent Orton's. Foundation personnel stream by on their way to their respective duties. Most avoid looking at me. Some try to make eye contact, but my lack of eyes provides a hindrance to this commonplace social connection. Two corridors away, we come to an office. Orton Shubs the door open, but doesn't go inside. Have a look. I get to the threshold, but pause. Something doesn't feel right. There's an off vibe to the space.
Starting point is 00:05:15 I glance inside, but don't place a toe in the office. Go on. What are you waiting for? I turn to give Ortonz a hard stare, but, again, no eyes. So my action doesn't have the desired effect I hope for. What? You wanted to see the second body. Well, here is the second body. I'm not seeing it. Which is true.
Starting point is 00:05:37 I'm not seeing it. The office is small, and even from the hallway, I should be able to see more than the desk, chair, and a couple of filing cabinets. We believe it's behind and under the desk. Under? You mean like crammed into the footwell? Footwell! Orton's frowns.
Starting point is 00:05:54 This isn't some old British sports car. Who the hell says footwell? Well, what do you call it? Orton's rolls her eyes, grabs me by the elbow, and shoves me into the office. I instantly know that this is wrong, very wrong, and I retreat back into the hallway immediately. What is your problem, detective? Ortonz basically spits the word at me. I won't be ordered into a situation where I could be injured or worse, which, now that I'm here, is obviously the reason I was called into duty. I'm expendable because I can regenerate,
Starting point is 00:06:27 but you know what? That shit hurts like hell. So, I declined to engage first. I declined to engage further in this situation. Agent Roxbury frowns and cocks his head. He looks at Orton's. Orton's raises an eyebrow. Okay, you got us, but you felt something right? Ortonz glances into the office, but doesn't step inside. What do you know that we don't? Okay, first, there's the smell. I hold up a hand before she can argue that I don't have a nose. Just work with me here, agent Orton's. What kind of smell? If you're talking the smell, of death. Well, I hate to break it to you, detective, but there's a corpse in there, and we can all smell it. Roxbury laughs, or taunts grins. Right. Yes, thank you for that waste of all of our time,
Starting point is 00:07:16 agent. I take my fedora off and scratch my smooth, bald head, then place my hat back in place and tip the front up with my index finger. The smell isn't of death, although that is obviously present. No, the smell is of cotton candy. candy. That doesn't make sense. Exactly. But I think we all know what the smell of cotton candy means, right? The agents do not give me agreeable patient looks. Fine. The smell of cotton candy means Dr. Gavin has been in this room. Or taunts his eyebrows knit together. Dr. Gavin has been dead for two years. Yes, I am well aware of this fact. But you say you can smell them in there? I can smell traces of him, which tells me he was inside this office at some point recently. That cotton candy
Starting point is 00:08:05 smell is dietary ketosis. Due to his health conditions, he gave off the odor for a good portion of his life, which then ended. Gabbin is dead detective, so he couldn't have been in this office. If I could roll my eyes, I would. Agent, since when has death stopped anything around here? I pat my suit jacket down. I'm a mannequin, a living, well, maybe not breathe, but living mannequin who happens to excel at solving crimes. Are we really debating what can and cannot be? Roxbury nods in agreement. Point goes to me.
Starting point is 00:08:40 Okay, smart guy. What else did you notice? You said the smell was first? What's second? Oh, yes. Well, that would be the presence of a quantum trap designed to obliterate any anomaly that sets more than a foot inside the office. I pull out another smoke, light it, and hold it there.
Starting point is 00:08:58 You two excellent agents noticed the quantum trap, right? No, we didn't notice the quantum trap because there isn't one. The office has been scammed, swept, and thoroughly gone over with all remote tech available. A quantum trap would have been noticed. Is that so? A lab assistant walks by with a small terrarium in her hands. I don't know what's in it, but I grabbed the terrarium and throw it into the office. Hey!
Starting point is 00:09:23 The assistant shouts. What the hell? Or taunt spellos. Roxbury just purses his lips and gives me a stern look. Before the terrarium has flown three feet into the office, it explodes into a million-tony sparks. The sparks dissipate slowly as they fall to the floor, gone before they can touch the floor. Well, crap.
Starting point is 00:09:44 Ortonce turns to the stunned and rightfully upset assistant. Do you know who I am? The assistant nods. Good. Put my name in your report. It'll take the heat off of you. Heat? What heat?
Starting point is 00:09:56 the heat of you losing whatever anomaly that was. But I didn't lose it. A finger is jabbed at me. That thing threw it in there. Hey, hey, hey, hey. Let's not get name call here, okay? I'm not a thing. I'm the detective.
Starting point is 00:10:10 The assistant stands there, then hauls off and punches me in my plastic face. She immediately regrets the act of violence, pulling her hand back and clutching it to her chest. Yeah, you should have medical check for a fracture, I say. The assistant storms off with a act of violence. saying another word. I turn my attention back to the agents. Anyway, quantum trap. I step in there, and I become a lame fireworks display too. Roxbury. The man shakes his head. No, I don't want you to go in there.
Starting point is 00:10:42 Get a D-Class. Rocksbury pulls out his phone and sends a text. We wait. In a couple of minutes, a security guard walks a man in an orange jumpsuit down the corridor and write to us. You, Portans, pats the deep. D-class man on the chest. Can you grab that stapler off the desk in there for us? Unfortunately, we can't do it ourselves. Why not? The man Cox and I and studies the office as he scratches his ass. What's the problem? Above your pay grade. I don't get paid. Then it's way above your pay grade. Just get the stapler, damn it. The D-Class, D-7529, according to the stenciling on the back of his jumpsuit, hesitates. Or taunts, gives him a hard shove, and
Starting point is 00:11:26 And he stumbles into the office. The man freezes in place. Stapler, D-7529. Ortonce barks. When nothing happens, the man hurries to the desk, grabs the stapler, and runs back toward us. Then he turns to bloody mist as he passes the door's threshold. The stapler keeps its momentum,
Starting point is 00:11:45 flying across the corridor to smack against the wall and fall to the floor. Huh. A scratch my smooth skin. Toss the lit cigarette to the floor and grind it out. Would you look at that? That's quite the quantum trap if it affects humans too. Ortonce makes a call, and within 10 minutes, a robot about the size of two toasters stacked on top of each other rolls down the corridor. I am Bot 609.
Starting point is 00:12:10 The thing says in a high-pitched electronic voice straight out of a cheap, straight-to-video 1980s movie. How may I be of assistance? We need you to go into this office and assess the threat level. Bot 609 scans the corridor with a bright blue fan of light. There is evidence of human remains coating the floor, ceiling, and wall of this corridor. Is this a result of what may or may not present a danger in this office? Count it on the first try, Toaster, boy, I say. I am not a Toaster. Please do not belittle me.
Starting point is 00:12:41 Those who live in plastic houses should not throw mannequin stones. I laugh. I like Bot 609. Just get in there. Orton Sparks. Scan the entire office. Do not miss a millimeter, you hear. I do hear on many levels and spectrums. Part of my hearing says that a person is alive in that office, and perhaps they may be the culprit. What? Alive?
Starting point is 00:13:05 Ortonz and Roxbury both move toward the office door. I step in front of them. Orton's starts to argue, then comes to her stupid human senses and takes a step back. Roxbury rolls his eyes like, duh, what were we even thinking? Hey, Bob 609, what else you're hearing? I ask. Besides the human breathing, or the hum of several different quantum traps, or the wine of an attack bot waiting just inside the door?
Starting point is 00:13:31 Hey! A voice calls from the office. Not cool, bot 609. Damn! I give bot 609 a smooth thumbs up. Great job, bot 609. I'm guessing you aren't going inside the office to do a full scan. Not unless I want to be torn apart, no.
Starting point is 00:13:46 Bot 609 reverses, spins around, and raises a thin arm with a three-pinsered claw at the end. Sorry, humans, but a bot must take care of itself first. I raised both arms. Hey, I'm not a human. If it walks like a human, talks like a human... Then the bot is gone, slipping into a small hatch on the wall. I take it back, not a fan of bot 609. That didn't work.
Starting point is 00:14:12 You agents got any other ideas? Yeah, how about you solve this damn case? Roxbury nods in agreement with his partner. Solve the case? What case? There really isn't much of a case to solve. What are you talking about? I sigh and light another smoke. Seems like as good a time as any to have a prop.
Starting point is 00:14:32 Aiming the cherry end of the cigarette at the office, I call out. Dr. Whitaker, you can come out now. There's no response. Orton's glares at me. I clear my throat. Dr. Whitaker, we know you faked your death. Come on out. And let's see if we can get this all sorted for you.
Starting point is 00:14:50 How's that sound? Still no response. Okay, suit yourself. I tossed the cigarette into the office. It's vaporized in an instant. Agent Orton's, it is my opinion that this office poses a major hazard to the overall safety of this foundation site. It would be best to order a full purge of the space. Whoa, hold on now. Do not do that.
Starting point is 00:15:12 Ah, there you are, Dr. Whitaker. I'd lean against the door jam and try to act all cool and nonchalant, but then I'd be torn apart by the quantum department. traps, so I just cross my arms over my chest. Hiding in the footwell, I see. A man stands up behind the desk, his lab coat, a bloody mess. It is called a kneehole, Dr. Whitaker says. I beg to differ. Shut up, both of you. Ortonce aims a finger at the good doctor. Well, the bad doctor, considering what he's done. You, Whitaker, come out of there now. The man nods. He shuffles out from around his desk, walks toward the door, then grins and slams the door in our faces.
Starting point is 00:15:52 Admus deserved what she got. Traderous bitch. Ortonce goes to grab the door's knob, and I'm too late to stop her. No! I shout as Roxbury lunges for her partner. Even though Agent Orton's hand just barely grazes the knob, her entire face erupts in a twisted visage of torture and agony. Then her body goes stiff as a board, and she falls backward, caught at the last minute by Roxbury, who gently lays her on the floor. Yeah, that sucks.
Starting point is 00:16:20 I study the door and the knob. And I have to apologize. I believe I had the answer the whole time, but I didn't. That's not Dr. Whitaker in there. I shake my head. Stupid detective. Jesus, I had the answer from the get-go. Roxbury breaks his perpetual silence and calls for help.
Starting point is 00:16:38 Inside the office, there's the sound of shuffling, followed by a cry, a bang, and a wet splat against the door. Roxbury looks at me. You'll want to hold your partner, down, I say, and wish I had a 45 or 38 to pull and aim down at the supine woman. Or, should I say, hold Dr. Gavin down? Roxbury frowns. His eyes go from me to Orton's, back to me, back to Orton's.
Starting point is 00:17:02 Then he places his foot on the woman's chest. She blinks, shakes her head, and glares at the foot, pressing her to the floor. Do you mind, Agent Roxbury? Is this how you treat your own partner? Roxbury's eyebrows shoot up. Nice try, Gavin, but you need to work on your impersonations. You don't sound anything like Orton's. The woman snarls at me and grabs Roxbury's ankle, trying to twist free.
Starting point is 00:17:26 Roxbury pulls his service weapon and aims it down at Ortense, who is no longer driving her own bus. You won't shoot me, Roxbury. If you do that, you'll just kill your partner. Me? I'll be just fine. Unlike Dr. Whitaker, I say and hook a thumb at the office's closed door. I'm guessing that without you inside of him, the quantum traps he's
Starting point is 00:17:45 you set up, turned him to Pope. Am I right? Of course you are right. Those traps are my life's work, until Agnes and Whitaker sabotaged me. Those bastards took my findings and kept them for themselves while I was forced to walk this damn foundation site for two years as an unseen, unheard ghost. Until you figured out how you could possess Whitaker, that is. I go to take out another smoke, but the gag has lost its ironic luster, so I leave the pack in my suit jacket and scratch my cheek instead. Tell me, Doc, why didn't you just alert the foundation brass? Turn them in once you were able to communicate again. Because they betrayed me and had to pay. Security guards pour into the corridor. Their weapons trained on Agent Orton's body. Roxbury fills them in on the situation so no
Starting point is 00:18:30 friendly fire occurs. It is still technically Ortonce, after all. An automated, secure Gurney rolls into the corridor, and the guards make space. Bot arms spread out from the gurney, grab up Ortonce and place her on the gurney where an energy shield comes to life, sealing the poor agent inside. You can't stop me. I am everywhere. No, I can't stop you, I say as I follow closely behind the gurney. Roxbury right on my heels. But I know who can.
Starting point is 00:18:59 You fools, I am beyond your touch now. Whatever you try will fail. I pull a Roxbury and stay silent on the walk to the next wing over. Gavin, on the other hand, does not. Through the hijacked ortaunts, the doctor spits insults at us the entire trip. When we reach the containment room, Gabbin changes his tune right quick. Wait, where have you taken me? Why are we here? I walk us past several showcases that hold my friends and compatriots.
Starting point is 00:19:26 They are all completely still, resting behind double-paned glass. We pass an empty one. Mine. I pat it affectionately and keep going until we are almost at the end of the row. Roxbury, can you do the arm? Ones. Instances of SCP 5147 can't awake in other instances of SCP 5147. It takes a human touch and proper foundation clearance to bring one of my kind to life.
Starting point is 00:19:53 Roxbury enters a code into the keypad on the glass showcase. In seconds, the container opens, and my good pal, the exorcist, shudders, stretches, then steps out of his showcase, his priest's outfit clean and sharp. Oh, what have we got here? He asks, seeing Ortonce immediately. Then he nods at me. Detective? Exorcist.
Starting point is 00:20:16 Don't you judge me. You leave me alone. I'm not Catholic. So whatever you think you're going to do, it won't work. I'm not Catholic either. But then I don't really work on a spiritual plane so much as I reverse the effects of anomalies that have been misused. They just call me the Exorcist
Starting point is 00:20:34 because it sounds better than animalistic, X support. And you get to wear the snazzy white collar. Quite right, detective, quite right. You think you can outsmart me? I have six PhDs. You are made of plastic! That's a bit racist, I say. So, X, what's the plan? Well, that's a good question, detective. Is there a containment receptacle close by? Roxbury pats the gurney.
Starting point is 00:21:01 Oh, of course. Thank you for thinking ahead, Agent Roxbury. The man nods. I shall begin then. Gabben via Ortonz, shouts, and protests as X lays hands on the woman's abdomen. Then he nods and mutters to himself as he moves up and places his hands on her head. Words in Latin are uttered. I don't speak Latin, unless you count pig Latin. So I busy myself by picking at some lint on my fedora.
Starting point is 00:21:27 X suddenly stops speaking and backs away from the gurney as Orton's seizes, then goes completely slack. Roxbury rushes forward. but I stop him with a hand to the chest. X puts his fingers to the space where a mouth should be and lets loose with a loud whistle. Two of the showcases come alive and slide open. The occupants step out and walk over to us.
Starting point is 00:21:49 Um, I didn't know you could do that, I say in glanced at Roxbury. He does not look happy at any of this. Yes, well, anomalistic tech support has some perks, X says. The two numerous rivals, the mechanic and the psychic, approach the gurney. Give me and X a couple of nods and get to work. As X chants, the mechanic gets underneath the gurney and starts fiddling with the machinery. Tough little bastard, ain't he? The mechanic says,
Starting point is 00:22:17 Wormed his way out of the flesh and into the machinery. Not to worry, I'll smoke them out. The psychic places hands on Ortaunts, two fingers at each temple. If the psychic had eyes, they'd be closed in concentration, I'm sure. I'll make sure the bad Dr. Gavin cannot re-enter Agent Orton's. and I'll just hang here, feeling good about myself over yet another case closed. I fake a yawn and stretch my arms. Hey, Roxbury, mind if I get back to my showcase?
Starting point is 00:22:44 Kind of beat here. Been a day. Rocksbury rolls his eyes, the nods. He walks me to my showcase, where I step inside, giving him a tip of my fedora. Thank you, sir. I appreciate it. Hey, next time you guys wake me up, make sure the case is a real doozy, will you? Maybe have a couple of dames waiting for me in a smoking nightclub or something. up a little. Your job is done. Go to sleep, detective. X calls out. Roxbury chuckles, then closes my case and keys in my code. The second the case is locked, I begin to slip into stasis,
Starting point is 00:23:17 but not before I think. Well, that was fun. Maybe I'll get to dream about it this. SCP 51-47 refers to a group of 41-sentient, hollow, faceless mannequins. Each numbered from SCP 5147-1 to SCP 5147-41. Every mannequin specializes in a specific skill or closely related set of skills. They referred to one another by titles connected to those abilities, such as the cook and collectively call themselves the mannequin troop. The mannequins can understand both spoken and written requests. If a request is accepted, the appropriate mannequin will attempt to complete the task,
Starting point is 00:24:00 or assist with it in a harmless way. They will not accept requests that are immoral, unjust, or impossible to fulfill. They may also refuse to help anyone who has previously harmed one of their members. Once a task is complete, the mannequin returns to its showcase and becomes motionless again, appearing no different from an ordinary display mannequin. If damaged or destroyed, each mannequin is capable of regenerating after roughly 72 hours. However, they strongly disallowed. like requests that put them at serious risk of harm, and will usually ask for proper safety precautions before continuing. Thanks for listening.
