The entrance to the subway looms before me, and I watch as the target takes the steps, walking down into the subterranean system. Command, I have eyes on the target. I whisper into the calm.
Starting point is 00:01:33 Command replies. Do not lose them. Proceeding. Don't worry, Command. I got this. Ah, come on, Command. You know me. I don't get cocky. I am cocky.
Starting point is 00:01:45 The morning crowd of commuters flows around me like a stressed out, pissed-off stream of humanity. No one wants to be getting onto the subway at 6 in the morning. No one wants to sit with a bunch of smelly strangers as everyone ignores each other while staring at their screens. I see the target approach the turnstiles and I pause. She isn't pulling cash to pay for her ticket. Instead, she swipes on her phone, then places the screen to the scanner on the table. turnstile. Crap.
Starting point is 00:02:14 Okay, this is different. She should have paid in cash and gotten an actual ticket. Then SCP 342, which we are positive is in her possession, would become the ticket, and that would be that. But she scanned her phone. Command? I call over the comm. The situation has shifted.
Starting point is 00:02:32 Explain. I explain, and there's silence for a long while. Copy that, command. I stay on mission and head to the turnstiles. My foot slips, and I look down at a square of paper sticking out from under my shoe. I pick it up and study it, but it's just an old ticket stub from what looks like the 1970s. Cool, I say and tuck it into my pocket. Might be worth something.
Starting point is 00:03:00 I'll have to check the foundation database when I get back to the site. There is more information on collectibles in that database than all the high-end auction houses combined. I'm jostled hard. Hey, watch it. A man snaps as he pushes in front. of me and gets to the turnstile first. I laugh because I could reach out and break his neck before anyone even noticed. Or I could take out my service weapon and put a couple of slugs in his back and one through his skull. Or I have my ankle knife, which is sharper than God, and would
Starting point is 00:03:29 slice through him like a wet finger through toilet paper. Dumb bastard doesn't know how lucky he is that I'm on an assignment. Otherwise, I'd origami his ass right into the closest trash can. Excuse me? A woman says and moves around me. Okay. Maybe I'm the problem. I'm holding up the flow. I take out my phone and swipe to the Universal Transit app the Foundation provides. The turnstile beeps as I place the screen to the scanner. Then I shove the metal arm out of the way, and I'm back into the crush of humanity as it commutes its way to never-ending mediocrity. I'm not a big fan of people. Probably why I was recruited by the SCP Foundation. I had solid marks as a field agent, even gaining some notoriety for
Starting point is 00:04:13 heading off what could have been one of the worst international incidents since the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. That shit started the First World War. My incident would have been a million times worse. That incident I stopped? It wasn't clean. I exposed people who was supposed to be untouchable, burned a few back-channel alliances to the ground, and ruined the reputations of several very wealthy, very well-connected families in the process. Officially, I prevented a global catastrophe. Unofficially, I embarrassed the wrong people. As I wind my way through the throng, I scan the crowd and find the target a few meters in front of me. She has her head down, looking at something on her phone.
Starting point is 00:04:57 Of course she is. Most of everyone is. It's a wonder people don't just walk right into each other. And the second I think it, it happens. The target walks directly into someone else, causing both of them to drop their phones. I slip behind a pillar and watch as she and her collision buddy exchange a couple of laughs, grab their phones and continue on, heads down once again as they each make their way to their needed platform. A train pulls into the station and the doors part, unleashing a tsunami of passengers that
Starting point is 00:05:29 the target has to navigate in order to board the train before the doors close. I leave my hiding spot and half walk, half sprint to the next train car down, sliding between the doors just before they shut. Acting casual, I scan the faces of the other passengers, but no one is watching me. A last second boarding isn't that unusual. Then I make my way to the car's end door and peer through the dirty window,
Starting point is 00:05:54 past the gangway, and into the connecting car. There she is, sitting in a middle seat halfway down the car, command says in my ear. I'm about to open the door and move through the gangway to the next car when I pause. I'm sorry, Command. Can you repeat that? Is authorized. I take a couple of steps back and focus on the com.
Starting point is 00:06:23 Okay, what are you talking about? This is a snatch and grab. I have zero intel on any possible threat from the target. I close my eyes and picture the target's file. She's a retail clerk at a dress shop. There is no indication that she has had weapons training of any kind. I shake my head and open my eyes. Half the subway car is staring at me.
Starting point is 00:06:47 I smile and roll my eyes, hoping to convey that we all deal with crazy stuff, right? Most of the passengers look away, which doesn't make things better, because it's how they look away that makes me more unsettled than when they were looking at me. Their heads all turned in unison. The few eyes still on me narrow. Then they also look away. At least this time they aren't doing it in unison. Command, do you have any reports of other anomalous activity in the subway system this morning?
Starting point is 00:07:16 Not helpful, command. No response. No, seriously, Command. What is going on down here? Things are just south of normal. Still no response. Then a shrill of static bursts through the comms, and I have to yank my earpiece out before I go deaf.
Starting point is 00:07:36 All eyes are back on me, so I slowly move back to the end door, peer through the window once more, then slide the door open and step into the gangway. I'm at the connecting car's door and opening it by the time the door behind me automatically closes. I make sure the target is still in place, then proceed into the car. No eyes fall on me this time, which I'm grateful for. It was getting weird back there in that
Starting point is 00:08:00 other car. Everyone here is swiping on their phones, with a few exceptions. A woman is knitting while bopping her head to some tune. A man is reading a newspaper. A woman is breastfeeding her baby while staring out the window at the endless darkness. I glance out the window too and frown. I'm not seeing any lights at all. I should be seeing streaks of incandescent speed past, but all I see is an inky darkness. The target looks up and glances in my direction. I smile and keep moving,
Starting point is 00:08:30 walking past her to an empty seat, three quarters of the way down the car. A man dressed in a retro black suit from the 50s sits by the window. His face turned away from me. The seat between us is empty, but he has a hand placed on it like he's saving the space. You ain't man enough to sit by me, the man whispers.
Starting point is 00:08:49 What was that? I asked. Did you say something? I heard him clearly, so I'm not asking for him to repeat himself. I just need to know how crazy he might be. Assignments on subways are always tricky because of the nut jobs that inhabit the transit system. At least it's better than the bus lines. The man turns to me, and only my training keeps me from freaking out. His eyes are gone, cut out of his face a long time ago, leaving a man.
Starting point is 00:09:15 massive scar tissue to clump around his deflated lids. I can kill you with a thought, the man says. Would you like me too? No thanks, I say and get up. The target looks my way and sneers at me. Then she lifts a finger and wags it back and forth. What the hell? Command? Come in.
Starting point is 00:09:34 I have a situation developing and could use some assistance. The train's public address system crackles to life with loud static and even louder feedback. I wince. No one else does. Next stop is Ocean Drive. The female voice says, Except for you, Agent Carlyle. You won't be getting off anytime soon.
Starting point is 00:09:53 What the hell? You ain't man enough. The eyeless man says as he inches across the seats toward the aisle. Toward me. I look at the target, and she is still staring directly at me. So is everyone else now. Car shopping this civic holiday weekend, most car dealerships are closed and all you'll find are crickets.
Starting point is 00:10:12 Not Performance Auto Group. They're open this Saturday and, Holiday Monday for their annual Civic Holiday Sales event. Celebrate this long weekend with rates from 0%. My day kicks off with a refreshing Celsius energy drink.
Starting point is 00:10:41 Pre-gate drop off. Then straight to the gin. Back home to meal prep before heading to the fire station for my shift. When the three alarm comes in, I'm a three alarm comes in. I'm ready. Celsius. Live, fit, go. Grab a cold, refreshing Celsius energy drink at your local retailer, or locate now at Celsius.ca. Enjoy Celsius responsibly. Designed for occasional energy boost, not as part of your daily diet. Please adhere to recommended serving limits. Jackets! A voice bellows from behind me, and I almost draw my weapon as I spin around. It's a man
Starting point is 00:11:12 in a conductor's uniform from like the 19th century. He smiles and walks straight up to me. All I want to do is turn and run screaming, but my training holds me in place, despite the fact that I'm two seconds from pissing myself. It's completely irrational, I know, but denying the complete and total abject terror I now feel in the man's presence would be unprofessional of me. Kick it, please. His breath smells like rubbing alcohol and iron. I breathe through my mouth and shudder. All I can do is look him up and down. After a moment, he grows impatient and steps closer. It takes all of my willpower to stay standing right where I am. It also takes all of my willpower not to take out my pistol and put two bullets between his eyes. Or between my eyes, if that'll make this sphere go away.
Starting point is 00:12:00 What is happening? I said, dig it, please. The conductor grumbles, his hand held out. No ticket, no ride, Agent Carlisle. What the, what did you just call me? How do you know my name? He cocks his head. The smell of rubbing alcohol and iron envelopes me. I just, I just need to get this guy away from me as fast as possible. Here, I say, and take my phone out to show him the app. Or try to. My phone isn't in my pocket, but a crumpled subway ticket from 1978 is. The conductor snatches the ticket out of my hand and rips the end. Then he shoves past me, shouting, Tickets! Tickets! Tickets, please! He doesn't stop at any of the other passengers, and keeps walking until he's at the end and slides the door open. Then he pauses and turns to grin at me.
Starting point is 00:12:47 Get comfortable, Agent Carlisle. It's going to be a long... This time, I do pull my service weapon. I rush down the car toward the conductor, but he slips out the door and onto the gangway before I can reach him. When I reach the end door, there's no conductor on the gangway, and as far as I can see, there's no conductor in the next car either. Then the gangway becomes darkness,
Starting point is 00:13:10 an inky black that almost fills the space like water, except that it definitely isn't water. What is going on? I ask out loud. When I spin back around, half the passengers are gone, including the target. No! No! I shout and run up and down the aisle, looking for her. She's not in the car.
Starting point is 00:13:29 Sprinting to the opposite end, I shove open the door and hurry across the gangway and into the next car, which is exactly like the car I just left. The isle's freak is sitting in his seat, facing toward me and smiling. I recognize a couple of the other passengers, too. I shove the earpiece back in and shout, Command! Come in, damn it! All I hear is someone singing ring around the rosy, and it's not Command's voice. Command, please come in!
Starting point is 00:14:00 The train car breaks hard, and I'm thrown off my feet. Pain shoots up my left wrist from the fall. I clutch my hand to my chest as I steady myself, then slowly get back upright. The car is now empty. There isn't a single other person in the car with me. I'm never getting off this train, am I? I'm going to be here forever. Oh, God, I'm going to die in this train.
Starting point is 00:14:20 I know it. Please, Command! Come in! The damn song has started over. For the second time this morning, I pulled the calm from my ear. It's obviously been compromised. I reach into my pocket, and I'm surprised to find my phone again. I immediately dial the foundation site and hope that dispatch can connect me to command.
Starting point is 00:14:43 We're sorry. The car's public address system crackles to life, although this time the female voice is warped and scratchy. The number you have dialed is no longer in service. Please check the number and try again. Thank you. It actually sounds like someone slams down a phone, making me think of my mother in our kitchen, fending off creditors after my parents got divorced, and dad decided to skip town and never to speak to any of us again. Huh, haven't thought of that in a while.
Starting point is 00:15:10 My phone rings, and I jump, nearly dropping it. I stare at the screen. It's my sister. Darla? Everything all right? I answer. Carlisle? Command.
Starting point is 00:15:33 What is going on? I pull my phone away and look at the screen again. It says it's Darla calling, my sister, not command. Darla, what's going on? Why are you calling me? How did you get this number? The sad pleading in my sister's voice takes me back to that childhood kitchen again. God, I was a bastard.
Starting point is 00:16:05 I bullied everyone in that house. If I wanted to spend hours on the phone talking to my girlfriend or one of my buddies, I did. Screw everyone else. Darla shouts in my ear. I yanked my phone away. The screen is blank. Jekets! My head jerks up.
Starting point is 00:16:24 And I see the conductor walking toward me once again, and my phone is no longer in my hand, but that ticket from 1978 is. The conductor is hurrying straight for me. This time, I do pull my service weapon. Stop! I shout. Don't you take another goddamn step! The conductor doesn't slow. He aimed for me like a heat-seeking missile. I said stop, asshole! I yell and thumb the safety off. No more warnings. Tickets! Tickets! Tickets, please. Tickets! Tickets now! Give me the ticket! My finger slips inside the trigger guard, and I squeeze. The gunshot is so loud in the enclosed subway car that all I hear is ringing for a moment, even though I can see the conductor's lips moving.
Starting point is 00:17:05 Lips that are soon covered in blood as it drips from the hole I just made in the man's forehead. The conductor's whole face is now a mass of streaming blood as he continues to barrel toward me. Ticket, you little worm! Give me your ticket! I lower my weapon and stare at the man coming for me. Dad? I ask. My hands are shaking, causing my pistol to shake too. Dad? Is that you?
Starting point is 00:17:27 We're sorry, but Daddy left you a long time ago, Agent Carlisle. This is not your father. The woman says over the PA system. Please proceed to the nearest exit and jump, you little worm. Jump, you little worm! The man who looks like my father, but sounds like the conductor roars at me. The car is suddenly filled with passengers. So many passengers.
Starting point is 00:17:47 Elbow to elbow, shoulder to shoulder. Jump! They all shouted at me. I can no longer see the conductor wearing my father's face. He is lost to the throng. Jump! Jump! Jump! The mob of passengers chants at full volume as they close in around me. Get back!
Starting point is 00:18:04 I say, trying to get my weapon up. Hands grab my arms. They grab my shoulders. They pluck the pistol from my grip. The weapon is lost from sight in an instant. Handed back to the mob and away from me. Get off me! I yell.
Starting point is 00:18:17 It does no good. The mob is too strong, too thick, too determined. Jump! Jump! Jump! Fuck off! I shouted at the top of my mouth. lungs. I'm lifted off my feet and held aloft by dozens of hands. I struggle. I fight. I'm throwing punches and kicking out as hard as I can. I'm spitting and biting. As fingers claw at my cheeks, I toss my head back and forth, keeping the fingers from sliding between my lips and into my mouth.
Starting point is 00:18:41 I moved along above the mob by the dozens and dozens of hands, an involuntary crowd surfer. When my momentum stops, I try to thrash my way down to the floor. Surprisingly, I'm allowed to drop. Falling to my hands and knees, I cry out as my wound. wrist protests. Then I noticed that I don't have a wounded wrist because I don't have a left hand at all. No wrist, no forearm, just a bloody stump that starts on my elbow. No, this isn't real. Oh, but it is, Agent Carlyle, the PA woman announces. It is the most real your life has ever been, and we thank you for riding with us. Thank you for jumping! The mob shouts. The doors are forced open, and the rushing wind whips in around me.
Starting point is 00:19:21 I'm alone once again. The car is empty. The mob is gone. The PA is silent. I look at my arm and cry out. My hand is back. My wrist hurts like hell, but it's there again at least. That sound? It means the King's Plate is here. Canada's most iconic day at the track.
Starting point is 00:19:37 Saturday, August 15th, Woodbine Racetrack. Tickets start at $40. Get yours now at kingsplate.com. The Kingsplayed. Must be 18 plus a wager. No one to take the reins. Responsible Gambling.org. The doors are still open,
Starting point is 00:19:49 and that inky blackness swirls outside the train car. Tendrils like sticky fingers ease into the car groping, searching, hunting. Scambling backwards on my hands and feet, I bump into a row of seats and immediately clamber up into them as if they will provide safety from the impossible darkness that stalks me.
Starting point is 00:20:07 The tendrils move slowly, taking their time as they crawl across the train's floor, headed straight for me. A hand grabs my shoulder, and I jerk my head around to see a concerned-looking young man staring at me. Sir, are you all right? Can I call someone for you?
Starting point is 00:20:21 There's no wind. There are no tendrils of darkness hunting, me down. No static EPA or nightmare conductor. The train car is filled with passengers and commuters heading to their jobs in their long days. While not everyone is looking at me, I can tell that I'm the center of attention. Sir? The young man asks. He offers me his phone. You broke yours, but you can use mine if you need to. Maybe call a friend or relative to meet you at the next stop. I look down at the floor. My phone has been smashed into a million pieces like someone stomped it to death. When I see a piece of glass sticking out of my shoe, I realize that I must have been the someone doing the stomping.
Starting point is 00:21:01 No. No. Thank you. I'm fine. I say to the young man, but he's not there anymore. Half the passengers aren't there anymore. Not again. I mutter. Yes, Agent Carlisle. Again! The PA woman shouts. Her voice then drowned out by ear-shattering static. I have my phone in one hand and the strange ticket in the other. The car's doors are wide open. and the air is pushing the dark tendrils toward me like the wind pushes seafoam up onto the beach. Tickets! The conductor is running at me. He grabs me up and carries me over to the open doors, shoving me partly outside.
Starting point is 00:21:36 The darkness wraps about my head, about my neck, and squeezes, while the conductor laughs and laughs. No, chicken! I can't breathe and I can barely think. Pain explodes in my head as my lungs hitch and strain for air. Jesus, I think this stuff is cracking my skull. It's literally crushing my head in its grip. Not that it matters, I'm going to be strangled to death before my skull breaks. I... Ticket!
Starting point is 00:22:02 I somehow managed to fish out the 1978 ticket I found earlier and show it to the maniacal conductor. He stares at it, glares at it, then smiles, nods, and pulls me back into the car. Thank you, he says in a congenial voice as he takes the ticket from me. This time, he doesn't tear it and hand it back. He tucks the ticket into a pocket, smiles at me again, then says, I hope you enjoyed your ride, Agent Carlyle. I am sure that your friends, family, and colleagues will miss you dearly. What?
Starting point is 00:22:34 Is all I'm able to say before he pushes me out the still-open door and into the embrace of the darkness. I close my eyes tight and scream. When I open my eyes, I'm sitting alone in the unmoving train car. Then I feel the car start to buck and slowly creep forward. I stay still in my seat. Back for another ride, Agent Carlisle? The PA woman asks. Then she laughed.
Starting point is 00:22:56 as the doors slide open and commuters file in, filling the car to capacity in seconds. Everyone ignores me. Some folks almost even sit on me, but change their minds at the last second. All I can do is stare at the 1978 ticket that is back in my hands. I'm never getting off this train, am I? SCP 342 normally takes the form of a mass transit ticket for the closest form of mass transportation to its current location. At the moment, it takes the form of a train ticket, departing from a classified station. When held by a sentient person for any length of time, it will eventually change form into a transit ticket for a form of transportation its holder desires to use.
Starting point is 00:23:41 This transformation always takes place when not being directly or indirectly observed. No recordings of SCP 342 changing form exist at this time. SCP 342 is indistinguishable from any valid transit ticket, and may be used as such. Should SCP-342 be validated by stamp, have its ticket stub torn off, or be disposed of, it will reform itself into an unused ticket after a short period of time. SCP Foundation personnel should be on site to recover SCP-342 after the conclusion of any field experiments. Anyone who uses SCP 342 to board a vehicle is unable to exit said vehicle by any means. Once the vehicle ends its route and ceases movement, the user will
Starting point is 00:24:27 disappear from this reality. Users report a mounting feeling of dread prior to boarding the vehicle, which increases during the course of the journey, and culminates in panic-inducing terror shortly before disappearance. Specific phenomena often resemble acute paranoid schizophrenia. Although the most acute experiences are limited to the user only, bystanders, including agents assigned to observe the subject, do report feelings of uneasiness, and will be compelled to exit the vehicle early, seeking other means of transportation.
