Ella gasped for air as her feet pounded against the forest floor. She dodged between the trees and leapt over roots, her heart pounding harder with every step.
Starting point is 00:01:16 Sunlight streamed through the canopy in a way that would have been pretty had she not been running for her life. But she had no time to appreciate nature today. He was coming. She glanced back to see how close he was, but the next thing she knew, she was falling to the ground with her foot stuck in a root. She screamed as pain ran up her leg and horror rushed through her veins. He was upon her in an instant, his large hands clamping around her shoulders and yanking her backward while the root held her ankle fast. She flailed against him and he hissed in frustration.
Starting point is 00:01:49 His grip loosened for half a second and part of her thought maybe she still had a chance. Then something crashed against her head in the forest faded away. When she opened her eyes, everything was dark. She blinked and reached for the cup of water beside her bed as her eyes adjusted. But her hands were tied behind her back, and there was no glass on the bedside table. There was no table. There wasn't even a bed. As reality came rushing back, Ella realized she was lying on a mattress in a tiny bedroom.
Starting point is 00:02:21 Her head was aching, and she could feel dried blood along the side of her cheek. The forest, the fear, and the memories tumbled over one another in her mind, sending her heart racing even faster. She listened for any sign of her captor, but was met with silence. The bedroom door stood slightly ajar. Ella held her breath, but nothing stirred beyond it, not a creek, a footstep,
Starting point is 00:02:46 or even the faintest whisper of breathing. He must be gone. She relaxed slightly, but panic set in again as she tried to remember his face. She saw him, clear his day. She knew she did, but she couldn't remember. what he looked like. She searched the recesses of her mind, but came up with nothing. Ella could still
Starting point is 00:03:07 feel his hands on her, roughly pulling her upright, but she couldn't remember whether they were thick or slender, dark or pale, smooth or weathered. The harder she fought to remember, the less she did. Finally, she sighed and gave up. If he killed her, it wouldn't matter anyway. And something in her gut told her that he would kill her. Maybe not right away. Maybe he would toy with her for a while, but he was not going to let her go. Ella wasn't stupid. She'd heard all about the teenage girl who'd been kidnapped and found two weeks later in these very woods. Cheryl, that was her name.
Starting point is 00:03:46 Nobody had a clue what had happened to her. She was at home one day and suddenly she wasn't. The police had no suspects. According to the news, Ella didn't particularly care for the news, but you didn't hear about a girl near your age dying almost in your brain. backyard and just forget about it. Her mother had gone on about the disappearance one night at dinner, pulling Ella into a tight embrace and saying, that could have been you. Ella had rolled her eyes and wriggled free. Now, she would have given anything to be back in her mother's arms, safe, warm, and home.
Starting point is 00:04:19 Now she was trapped in the same nightmare Cheryl must have endured. Who knew how many others had come before them? Ella refused to become one of them. She wouldn't be found dead under a pile of leaves. If her father's premature death and her brother's drug addiction had taught her anything, it was that Ella was a fighter. She fought to keep their family together, and she wasn't about to die and let it fall apart. Her mother had been through enough. Hell, Ella had been through enough. She wasn't about to let some sick son of a bitch whose face she couldn't remember steal her future. She flopped off the mattress and hissed as pain shot up her leg. Nothing felt broken, but she bit her lip as she rose to her knees.
Starting point is 00:05:01 By the time she got to her feet, her lip was bleeding. She awkwardly limped to the door and peeked into the empty living area. Moonlight shone through the window, giving her a clear view of the space. Bile rose in her throat as she stared at the wooden table with shackles on each corner. Stains had seeped into the grain, leaving a memory of all the girls before. The wall was lined with shelves containing all manner of tools, hammers, hand-sawes, pliers and knives. So many knives, some of them covered with dried blood. Ella gulped and fought to keep her breathing even. She wanted to scream. She wanted to run away. She wanted to bury her face in a
Starting point is 00:05:40 pillow and pretend none of this ever happened. But she couldn't do any of those things. Not yet. First, she had to untie her hands. Then she had to get out of this godforsaken cabin before he came back. Then, well, maybe then she could scream. She limped over to the shelves and shuddered at the side of the tools, trying not to imagine what they had been used for. Amid the sharp tools and bloodstains was a photograph of a little girl with big brown eyes and curly hair. She couldn't have been more than four. Ella frowned, and a shutter ran through her. Was this his first victim?
Starting point is 00:06:17 What had he done to her? This innocent child with the big smile. Sadness filled her at the thought, but it was quickly followed by rage. She had to get out. if not for her own safety, then for the sake of the girls who didn't make it. Maybe she could help them catch this bastard once and for all. If only she could remember his face. The thought of touching any of the bloodstained tools made her stomach turn,
Starting point is 00:06:41 but she needed to free her hands. She turned sideways and rammed her shoulder into the shelf until several items, including a knife, crashed to the floor. The noise seemed deafening in the silence. Ella paused and strained her ears. A sudden scratching noise made her jump, and her heart leapt into her throat. She didn't dare move as she stared at the front door, half expecting the man to burst through. The sound continued, but no one appeared.
Starting point is 00:07:08 With a sigh of relief, she realized it was only a branch dragging across the window. She moved as quickly as she could and knelt on the floor to grab the knife between her hands. She sawed through the coarse rope, cursing as she accidentally cut her wrists. Her grip became slippery with blood. After what felt like an hour, the rope fell from her hands, and she was free. Knife still in hand, Ella took one last look around the cabin and froze. There was another door, one she hadn't noticed before. She'd seen enough horror movies to know that she should ignore it,
Starting point is 00:07:42 but she couldn't help putting her ear to the door in listening. A faint moan came from the other side, so quiet she almost missed it. Instinct took over, and she whipped open the door. Her hands flew to her mouth to cover her screen. A corpse lay in the center of the room upon a large wooden bed. It was the body of a young girl. Her curly brown hair spread across the pillow and her pale, thin arms resting atop a light pink comforter. Ella's gaze settled on the girl's face, and the recognition prickled across her skin.
Starting point is 00:08:12 This was the child from the photograph. The figure suddenly twitched, and Ella nearly screamed again. She crept closer, now noticing the slight rise and fall of the girl's chest. Not a corpse then. Not yet. The photograph hadn't been a memorial to some long-dead victim. The girl was still here, preserved like something he refused to let go. Hello?
Starting point is 00:08:34 She whispered. The girl's eyes remained closed. Ella gently poked her arm, but the girl didn't respond. Hello? She tried again, louder this time. But the girl was entirely unresponsive. She didn't have any cuts or bruises, and her hair and face appeared clean. She looked, cared for like a doll.
Starting point is 00:08:54 but her cheeks were sunken and her skin had a gray pallor. Unlike Ella, she wasn't restrained. But maybe that's because she had no hope of escape anymore. Ella glanced between the girl and the door. With her injured ankle, she could barely carry her own weight. There was no way she could carry the child through miles of forest and outrun their captor. She'd already wasted so much time, and he could come back any minute. With a sigh, Ella patted the girl's shoulder. I'll come back for you. She said softly. She closed the door behind her as she left the room. Then she turned to the front door and held her breath as she turned the handle ever so slowly.
Starting point is 00:09:33 The door creaked open to reveal the dark forest, lit only by slivers of moonlight peeking through the branches. She took one step onto the porch and squinted into the woods, keeping an eye out for any movement. But all was still. Now, which way to go? She had no idea where she was, and the forest was massive. She could have been five minutes from home or five days, moving as quickly and silently as she could with her limp. Clouds shifted in front of the moon, and she was left to squint at the darkness and feel her way forward. With her arms outstretched and her ankle aching, she had never felt more
Starting point is 00:10:09 exposed, but she had to keep moving. Ella had never been the type of person to sit around and wait for things to happen, and she certainly wasn't going to start now. She gritted her teeth and put one foot in front of the other, imagining the relief she would feel when she reached home. A twig snapped somewhere to her right, and she froze, her heart hammering in her ribs. She clutched the knife tighter in her fist and held her breath, but she couldn't see anything. Surely if it was him, he couldn't see her either, right? The clouds moved again, as if they heard her, and this silvery white light illuminated the source of her terror. Her body sagged in relief. It was just a squirrel. A harm.
Starting point is 00:10:50 endless little squirrel. She was about to keep moving when she heard another sound, this one unmistakable. It was the howl of a wolf, quickly followed by the cries of its brothers. She tensed again, but they didn't sound close enough to be a threat. Not yet. With the moon lighting her path again, she shuffled onwards, praying she was heading out of the woods rather than deeper in. Ella didn't believe in God, but somebody must have heard her plea because just as she was considering stopping for the night on account of her screaming ankle, the trees began to thin, and beyond the tree line lay a road. She gasped in relief, and her heart lifted as headlights appeared. She stepped onto the pavement and waved her arms, screaming, help me! The car slowed and then stopped.
Starting point is 00:11:36 Ella ran to the passenger side and yanked open the door. The man behind the wheel was about 40 or 50, with sandy hair and white eyes. His jaw dropped at the side of her bloody wrists. Are you okay? Ella could have kissed him, even if he was old enough to be her father. No, but I think it will be. She replied with half a smile. Starting point is 00:12:54 with Eye Gaming, Ontario. B-185, B-185. Samuel's voice penetrated the awkward silence of the room that was occasionally interrupted by crinkling rappers, camera clicks, and quiet conversations. He sighed as an elderly woman struggled to get to her feet, waving her ticket in the air. She hobbled over with a frown on her face.
Starting point is 00:13:18 It's about time. I've been waiting for over an hour, she said loudly. Samuel resisted the urge to roll his eyes and ran his fingers through his light brown hair instead. I'm sorry for the wait, ma'am. What can I help you with today? She bristled. I don't know. You told me to come. What do you mean? I got a letter saying I had to come in. Samuel nodded absently. What did the letter say? As she fumbled with the paper, his gaze drifted past her to a teenage girl, sitting alone in the waiting area. A ticket clutched in her hand. Here. The old woman thrust the paper at him like she was glad to be rid of it,
Starting point is 00:13:59 and he was forced to return to the task at hand. Samuel scanned the contents with growing dread. Ma'am, you need to renew your driver's license. Okay, isn't that what you do here? Yes, but I'll need you to complete a vision test first. Her lips thinned and her eyes narrowed. I can see perfectly fine, thank you very much. B-186. That's what her ticket said. He glanced at his coworkers, both of whom were currently occupied with other customers.
Starting point is 00:14:29 But he couldn't tell how long they would be. Samuel's heart sped up, and he smiled at the old lady. You're right. The letter was a mistake. You're free to go. She blinked. Okay, thank you. She was still shuffling away when Samuel called B-185 again. The girl jumped up and approached the desk. Just got your license?
Starting point is 00:14:52 He smiled at her reassuringly, and she nodded. She had long, curly brown hair and deep brown eyes that were so familiar. The sight of them sent a pang through his chest. Name? Ella Waters. She replied softly. Samuel slid a clipboard across the counter. All right, Ella.
Starting point is 00:15:09 I'm going to need you to fill this out, and we'll get you all set up. She scribbled her information onto the page and handed it back a moment later. He glanced at the address and gave a low whistle. You live up in the east side? That's a nice neighborhood. She shrugged. Yeah, I guess. Samuel pursed his lips and remained silent as he copied her information onto the temporary license. Neither of them said anything until he nodded and slid the paper over to her.
Starting point is 00:15:39 All right, here you go. You'll receive your permanent license in the mail in a few weeks. With a smile of thanks, she was off. And so was Samuel. He gave the neighbor a casual nod as he approached Ella's front door. The neighbor simply stared back, but Samuel wasn't worried. The man could stare all he wanted, but he would never remember this moment. She opened the door, wearing the same red t-shirt and jeans she'd had on earlier.
Starting point is 00:16:11 Ella Waters? Yes. There wasn't a flicker of recognition in her eyes. Not that there should be. Samuel looked her up and down, noticing her creamy, unblemished, skin. his fingers itched to cut it open, to watch her bleed. But that's not why he did it. He wasn't a monster. But he snatched her up like one. She screamed as he hauled her body over his shoulder and headed for the woods behind the house. The neighbor watched the entire abduction. Before he could
Starting point is 00:16:40 react, however, his eyes turned glassy and he looked away. Ella's screams rang through the yard, but Samuel's influence twisted them into something ordinary, a barking dog perhaps, or children shouting in the distance. No one would remember screams. No one would remember Samuel. Ella, however, remained fully aware of what was happening. The girl thrashed in his arms, but he kept her in a tight grip. As they entered the woods, she pounded on his back, but he barely felt it. It was unfair, really, a tiny girl against a grown man, but life was unfair. Samuel knew that more than anyone. So did Susie. But death had switched sides and worked with Samuel now. They were partners, bound together by a bargain no one else could
Starting point is 00:17:27 see. As long as they worked together, Susie would be fine. A life for a life. That's how it went. Let me go, you monster! Ella cried. With a sigh, Samuel slammed her on the ground and looked her in the eye. I'm not a monster. I'm a father. But she didn't seem to hear him. The instant his grip left her. Ella scrambled to her feet and ran. Samuel watched her for a moment, recalling how Susie used to run through the trees, giggling and telling him to catch up, and he always did. As he drove the dark winding road through the woods that night, Samuel thought about where to go next. Despite his gifts, he could never stay in one spot too long. People started getting wary when too many girls went missing, and it was harder to catch them. He was usually careful, but the more he used his gift, the more reckless he became. It didn't used to be that way. At first, he was careful and quick. A shot in the head, a stab to the heart, and the job was done.
Starting point is 00:18:59 That was all he needed to do. That was the deal, the one he made with death all those years ago that set him down this path. It had been a night like this one, with the full moon guiding their way as he drove home through country roads. Anna's left hand was in his, her right hand stroking her growing belly. Susie was asleep in the back. Then something stepped onto the road. He slammed on the brakes, but the pavement was still wet from the earlier rainstorm, and they hydroplained.
Starting point is 00:19:26 He could still hear Anna scream in his ears, but it was worse when it stopped. He knew she was gone the moment he looked over at her bloodied body, her head hanging limp. He turned back to look at Susie, and she, too, was still. He wailed in agony and lunged towards her, clutching her hand. He swore he would do anything to keep her alive,
Starting point is 00:19:44 even trade another life for hers, and somehow, death answered. At first, Samuel thought he had imagined the faint flutter beneath his fingertips. Then he pressed harder again. against her wrist and felt it again. A pulse! As it strengthened beneath his fingers, an impossible certainty settled over him. Death had accepted his offer. Susie had been returned to him, but unless another life was given in place of hers, she would not remain. Susie hadn't aged
Starting point is 00:20:14 a day since the accident. Death had preserved her exactly as she had been, small, silent, and suspended somewhere between life and death. Samuel hadn't seen her smile since that night. She never called him Daddy again, but she was alive. She was still breathing, and that's what mattered. Samuel didn't care how many daughters he took away to save his own. He even started to enjoy it. As the years went on, he started keeping them longer, experimenting with them. He'd get angry at them, shouted them for living a happy life when his daughter couldn't. And then he'd snap, watching the life drain out of them and knowing that every stolen life was buying Susie a little more time. The deaths never restored the girl she had once been. They only kept what remained of her alive. He used to hate that part. He would look away when they took their last breath. But now, he relished the moment those insignificant girls left the earth so Susie could stay. As he rounded the bend, his headlights swept across something moving in the road ahead.
Starting point is 00:21:12 His heart lurched as he hit the brakes like he had that fateful night. But this time, the car came to a smooth stop. The passenger door opened and a girl slid inside. She had a bump on her head, bloodied wrists and wild eyes. He didn't have to feign surprise as he stared at her. Are you okay? It wasn't the question he wanted to ask, but it was the one she'd be expecting. She sagged in relief as she took in his nondescript appearance and the concern in his eyes.
Starting point is 00:21:39 No, she said, but I think I will be. Samuel turned away to hide his smile. He didn't know how she'd gotten out. He had grown careless, trusting his gift, and death itself, to make escape meaningless. judging by the girls sitting beside him now, he had been right, which meant that Ella would not be okay, but Susie would. As he drove back toward the cabin, Samuel looked at Ella and imagined Susie sitting in her place, smiling, laughing, alive again. SCP-60-2 is an unremarkable-looking man with the ability to alter the memories and perceptions of those
Starting point is 00:22:18 around him, making witnesses unable to clearly remember his face, or, in some cases remember seeing him at all. For more than five decades, he has traveled across the United States, taking low-level jobs at State Departments of Motor Vehicles. By manipulating his coworkers, he passes as a familiar but forgettable employee, then uses his access to personal records to identify potential victims. SEP 6052 primarily targets young girls, abducting them from their homes or schools. His earliest victims were killed quickly, usually. by gunshot or stabbing. Over time, however, his methods became increasingly prolonged and brutal, involving extended captivity, deprivation, and torture.
