Okay, so welcome to the program once again. When we last left you, Vic gave me homework.
Vic, in your prison cell, pop yourself hot here on the show for a couple of seconds.
I like the prison cell bookshelf, by the way, with the one book.
That's the one book you're going to read on your way to the electric chair is Burke's
Law, the Brian Burke book. That's impressive.
Now again, before we get into today's program, it's going to be a good one.
What was my homework assignment?
I asked you if you had a limited no trade clause and you had to pick five teams
you would not go to, who would they be?
Yeah.
Okay.
So I thought a lot about this and I thought, you know what, my real answer is I don't really care
because I would go anywhere to play hockey
if I was in that situation.
So in true American fashion,
I'm not gonna answer your question,
I'm gonna give you another question.
I wanna turn the no trade into a must trade
and it's really only gonna be one market but maybe two
and there's a story that comes along with it.
If I had a must trade clause in my contract,
which means over the course of my career,
I must be traded to this one team or this one market.
First of all, do you have a must trade?
Like one team that you have to be, like, here's the deal.
I'm playing in the NHL.
This is my no trade and this is my must trade list.
At some point I have to play for this team.
Maybe at a discounted rate because it's a must trade,
but what would your must trade be?
Where would you have to go?
Jeff, that's literally the easiest question
I've ever had to answer. You're gonna say Toronto,
aren't you? You're gonna say Toronto.
Correct.
1000%.
Alright, okay fine.
1000%.
If you want, do you want another one?
Yeah, cause that's boring.
Alright, so I'm currently a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs and they approach me and I have my no
trade clause and they're like you have to waive it, I'm going to Montreal. Okay, so that's my must
trade too. That's my exact, that's my one because I, there's another one and it's all rooted in
nostalgia and the voice of Ted Darling which is what I grew up with and that's my one because I, there's another one and it's all rooted in nostalgia
and the voice of Ted Darling, which is what I grew up with
and that's the Buffalo Sabres.
Because I grew up and I, one of the first,
one of the first things that I ever attached myself to
in hockey that I can remember is the Buffalo Sabres logo.
The original Buffalo Sabres logo I love.
Like I think that that, that kit that the Sabres have,
that combo that they have,
the OG is the best one in the NHL.
Everyone's is different and there's no right or wrong
answer, just for me, that's the best one.
And the thought of pulling that sweater over my head
and hearing the voice of the late great Ted Darling
in the back of my mind, with all due respect
to all the other play-by-play voices
that have come since, to me he's the best.
And that's all just rooted in nostalgia.
But to me, it's gotta be Montreal.
I can only imagine what it feels like
to have that Saturday night experience
in Montreal every single week.
I love everything about it.
The history, the ghost of the forum, all of it.
The cobblestone streets, the city abuzz when the game's about to play. To me, the ghost of the forum, all of it. The cobblestone streets, the city of buzz
when the game's about to play.
To me, the must trade, and to say nothing of,
I could finally brush up on my French
and finally make it decent and passable.
To me, it would be Montreal.
Now here's a dilemma, here's a dilemma
that I'll present to you.
So last week, I did an event with a good old friend
of mine, Brad May, who I've known forever.
And Brad May shared a story at this event that we were at
that I'd never heard before, he'd never told me before.
We had this conversation about what's the one team,
I was talking to Brad about teams that he wanted to play for.
I said, what's the one team you always wanted to play for
but never had a chance to?
And he said the one for him growing up
with the Boston Bruins.
And he said, and I had a chance to go, but I didn't.
Let me know what you would do in this situation. He said, I had an offer to go to the Boston
Bruins and we are well down the road to discussing a contract. And this is when he had just finished
up with Vancouver and he was all excited. He's always wanted to play for the Boston Bruins, always wanted to wear that jersey.
But he was told, okay, we're going to, but he's told by someone there, yeah, you know
what?
They're, they're bringing you in, but that means they're going to get rid of Travis
Green and that's the spot you're going to get.
Travis Green is one of his buddies.
Oh my goodness.
So he said, no, I'm not wow Travis Green spot and he ended up signing
The he also had an offer with the Dallas Stars, but he ended up signing with the Colorado Avalanche
Vic be honest if it meant you had to take your buddy's spot on the Toronto Maple Leafs
Would you still sign?
Let's see how selfish you are cuz Because May Day said no, and that's
what he always wanted to do, play for the Boston Bruins.
But he didn't want to take Travis Green's spot.
So he said no.
That's incredible.
I mean, it shows you what kind of, it shows you why the guy
behind me keeps bringing him everywhere he goes, right?
Like, that's a team guy, right?
Yes, completely.
But yeah, no, no chance.
Sorry, buddies.
I'm taking that joke.
I'm putting that joke.
That's a party of one, Vic, party of one.
All right, with that, we'll get the show rolling here.
Daily Outline, so selfish, powered by FanDuel, make every moment more with North America's
number one sportsbook,
the loyal Vic.
No longer vacation Vic, it's loyal Vic.
Jason Greger is standing by.
He'll be aboard here in a couple of moments.
Dave Pan-Yota from the fourth period will stop by.
We'll talk about the latest as it relates to signings and trades and all those fun things
and maybe offer sheets as well.
Skinner had a taste of, I mean, Jeff Skinner
had a taste of the playoffs and then said,
no thanks, I'm going to San Jose.
But we'll talk about the Edmonton Oilers
net mining situation with the other Skinner and Pickard.
We'll talk about Connor McDave.
We'll talk about Bo Byram and his contract extension
with the Buffalo Sabres and sticking with the Sabres,
we'll get into some tuck talk, Alex tuck talk
with Dave Pan Y Yoda a little bit
later on, uh, in the meantime from the DFO rundown, he is the host of that
fine podcast.
He is Jason Greger and he joins me on the show now, Jason, thank you so
much for being a board.
How are you today on this Tuesday, July 15th?
Good.
Um, when I, when I listened to your show intro, I actually thought it was at the first part
of it, I thought it was the Charlie Brown song. So I was almost disappointed when it
segwayed into something. Yeah. Like, you know, when they're all dancing around.
Yeah, it's the best. The guy who wrote that is one of the ultimate hipster, coolest musicians
of all time was really
popular in the 60s. Guy by the name of Vince Giraldi. Like I am fascinated with the
music of Charlie Brown and so I did a little bit of research years and years
ago and then I found the whole catalog of Vince Giraldi and it's like not
exactly like that but it's so similar and if you like the Charlie Brown music
you will love Vince Guraldi.
Anyhow, glad you took me down that and now I'm gonna load up Spotify with
Guraldi songs after the podcast goes off the air today. Hey, um, Gregor, if you were in Brad May's
situation where there's a team that you always wanted to play for but it meant that you were
gonna take your buddy's spot on the team and he was not going to be part of the team, what would
you have done? Because Mayday was in that spot with the Boston Bruins and Travis Green and he said, I can't do that to my
buddy. I'm going to Colorado. Yeah, well, I probably would have called my buddy first and said, hey,
here's the situation. What do you think? Because do you, you probably want to let your buddy know
that he's not wanted where he's at. Well, I mean, it's-
And then maybe I wouldn't go there anyway,
but I would let my buddy know what's going on.
Well, by the way, they're trying to get rid of you.
Go ask for a trade now.
By the way, I'll be taking your spot come training camp.
We've been talking a lot about the Oilers
ever since the Florida Panthers
won their second Stanley Cup.
What to you right now is the biggest issue,
I wanna go to some NHL issues here with you
in a couple seconds, but you're right there.
What to you is the biggest issue
for the Oilers at this moment?
There's a number of things you can choose from here.
And what is the biggest issue for fans
that you find in Edmonton right now?
Well, the biggest issue for fans, yeah, it would probably be the goalie because I
think it's the easiest one to go after.
You know, Stuart Skinner, I don't think actually even played that poorly in the Stanley Cup
final.
The orders just lost to a team that played better than they did, you know, at every position.
I don't think Stuart Skinner outplayed Bobrowski by any stretch of the imagination, but I don't believe that he was the main reason why they lost game five and six. He was not as
good as Bobrowski at this stage of his career. You know, is he better than Bobrowski earlier on?
Who knows? We'll see. But if I have to say the biggest issue for the orders, I'm actually going
to go off the board here. I think the orders organization right now I'm really in the room. I
think they're they're a very serious group. And like you
can't win the cup in October, you can't win it in December,
you can lose it by you know, having a terrible run and they
haven't done that. But I wonder just sometimes if they ever
really have any fun, right? Like they they're such a serious
group. And I think that that there's so much internal and rather than always every decision you make thinking that it's all about June. It is, but it's, you can't take,
like it's a step every year to get there.
You don't just get to jump to row 20 and start the playoffs.
You gotta do everything along the way.
And so I would say that, that's to me the issue.
That is a really interesting answer, you know,
cause we've seen situations, listen,
Blake Wheeler has talked about this openly
and we used to talk about it before
when him and Mark Shifely ran that Winnipeg Jets room
and like, look, they ran it hot.
They had a standard and it ultimately cost them Patrick Laine.
But we've seen, Nathan McKinnon runs the room hot.
They managed to win one Stanley Cup
when I think a lot of us looked at that
avalanche team and said, we're looking at what's going to be the next dynasty.
You're like, these guys are going to rip off two or three of these things.
And still, they're still stuck on one in this era.
Anyhow, do you think it's a matter of that?
The room just runs too hot and I can't help but thinking, you know, Jonathan
Taves is, you know, captain Sirius, but right behind him is Connor
McDavid. Like there have been times where we've wondered if he has upper teeth. We just thought,
we just don't know because he is that focused, that determined. I think your point about being
able to smile and laugh every now and then, I think as an honestly, Jason, I think that's a great one
that I had never really considered with the Edmonton. Well, is that it's hockey, it's okay to
have fun and exhale every now and then. I think that's a great point. I had never really considered with the Edmonton. Well, is that it's hockey. It's okay to have fun and exhale every now and then.
I think that's a great point.
I really, really do.
And I think the organization, um, you know, I really think that I,
Howard and Matt Savoy bringing some youthful exuberance, I think will just,
it relaxes the room.
Sometimes, sometimes those guys just tell funny stories about what they did as a
21 year old and the older guys who are married can sit back and just laugh and be like, Oh yeah, I remember doing that. and I did something stupid here, there, whatever it is. And that can just alleviate. And I don't think that, you know, McDavid is running that where, you know, every guy's are on pins and needles.
That's not what I'm saying. Because remember, like, and I think people forget the Oilers absolutely
demolished Vegas and demolished Dallas, right? Like it's just Florida was a bad matchup for them.
Right. And so I don't think Edmonton has to completely overturn everything. Like they lost
to a really good Florida team who had like how many guys in Florida
had career years.
They're not doing that again.
They're not going to have eight guys with 18 plus points and you know,
all their forwards are playing out of this world. It was amazing run.
Like they all deserved it because they did it. But I think Florida,
if they're going to win again, is going to have to do it in a different way.
And that's just, that's just how it goes.
So I think the orders look and say, man, like we've dominated Dallas now, especially last year, but beat them two years in a different way. And that's just, that's just how it goes. So I think the orders look and say, man, like, we've
dominated Dallas now, especially last year, but beat them two
years in a row, we handled Vegas pretty easily. Like the other
teams in the West, they still got to go through us. So we
Yeah, we lost the final and that sucks. And I can't imagine how
painful that is for players to lose back to back cups. You
know, I can't I don't pretend to but you can't change that you lost. So you say we did a lot of good things to lose back to back cups. You know, I can't, I don't pretend to, but you can't change that you lost.
So you say, we did a lot of good things
to get us to the final.
And so let's just focus on that and have a little enjoyment.
And you know, I expect the Odors
to be a very good team again this year.
I know there's lots of people that think
that they're terrible.
I'm like, their core is still intact.
Like I don't, I don't sure that, and guess what?
They're gonna make some moves at the trade deadline.
That's where they're just like Seth Jones and Brad Marchand push Florida over the top of the deadline
I think Edmonton is gonna make a few additions that the the one thing though that we've seen it's um
It's a story that's well told is if you're gonna make a move for a goaltender don't wait till the deadline to make that move
Right like we've seen before like that is a recipe for disaster. Make your goalie moves early.
Like I think we're all expecting Stan Bowman, you know,
by the end of the summer,
by the time training camp rolls around,
Stan Bowman is going to have another goaltender there.
You know, I was talking to Yerumchuk yesterday
on All-Urs Nation every day, and we were talking about,
there's another Arthur Shilov situation in the NHL right now
is playing out in Boston, another Arthur Shilov situation in the NHL right now is playing out in Boston,
not with Shilov's, of course, called their cup MVP,
but with Michael DiPietro,
who's turned in a couple of outstanding seasons
back to back for the, for the Providence Bruins,
and seems to be, you know, once again,
now ready for prime time, where once upon a time,
we thought that he was gonna be, you know,
taxi squatted out of the NHL, development installed, casualty of COVID, et cetera,
Di Pietro has pulled things together.
I think we wonder about Tristan Jarre.
Now that would take a big chomp from Kyle Dubas
in order to make it work for the Edmonton Oilers.
But the one thing that I keep trying to point out too,
and I think you're probably the same,
no matter who the Oilers bring in to play net,
like there's gonna be one more goaltender here.
Whoever they bring in, there's going to be a flaw
to that goaltender.
Igor Shostrkin's not walking through that door,
Ilya Sorokin's not walking through that door,
Andrei Vasilevsky is not walking through that door,
like the elite, Conor Hellebuck is not,
Jake Ottinger is not, like the elite of the elite
are not walking through that door.
Whoever they get, there is going to be some blemishes on.
But I look at the Oilers and say,
they don't need any of those Hall of Fame goal tenders
to win the Stanley Cup.
They just need to get a goalie that's gonna give them
one more save than they got last time.
And I'm with you, I don't think Stuart's,
like we tend to forget how good Stuart Skitter was
along the way until the Stanley Cup final hits.
But no matter who they bring in,
and maybe you have a couple of names
in the back of your hip pocket,
no matter who they bring in,
there's gonna be blemishes on them.
Like we have, for me, I began there, Jason.
Yeah, it's probably fair,
unless they can find Amika Kiprasoff
as a number three in another organization,
but that's obviously the massive outlier.
Another name that I think to watch for
is the New Jersey Devils and Dawes in New Jersey.
I think he's another goalie that's now waiver eligible.
And I think there'll be a lot of teams looking around there.
Maybe you make a trade, like if you're Edmonton,
you're second last on the waiver wire.
So do you really wanna go for the waiver wire?
If you're Stan Bowman, you might have to, you know,
call the GMs of other teams knowing, Hey,
you sending this guy down. Well, Hey, I'll give you a pick.
Now I'll give you a late pick.
It's not going to be a high pick,
but it's going to be better than nothing.
Cause that's what you're going to get when you put them on
waivers. So, you know, I, I could see that, um, you know,
now look at Pittsburgh, um, you know,
you mentioned they got Sheila. So is Blomquist out?
Is he going on waiver?
I think he's, I think Blomquist out? Is he going on waivers?
I think Blomquist is getting a lot of time next year. I think he's the one that, I think it's going to be Blomquist and Shelovs.
That's why I wonder about it. I think Jarry's going somewhere.
He's going, okay, well that's very possible he might be, but let's say he doesn't.
Well now what are they going to do? I guess they could always just put him on waivers and no one's going to claim him because he's got three years left at five point whatever it is five point three. So I just think that there'll be other goalies
available and you know the orders added a goalie coach now and you know Pete Aubrey
will come in and now it's a short offseason again for Edmonton and you know I've talked
to goalie experts because it's not a position that I you know claim to be an expert on.
I've learned a lot talking over the last seven or eight years, but
you look at some of the things that Stuart Skinner does, you know, there's certain things you can't change. He's got a narrow stance and that's just genetics, physical, that's not ever going to change.
But you can look at him and you know, he probably spins and over rotates a little bit too much.
So that's something that you work on. And I know he has worked on that more, some training stuff to
strengthen your core and to hopefully control that a little bit. And cause the thing is people,
Stuart Skinner in Knoblock's first year came in, he played 50, he started 50 games under Knoblock.
Knoblock was here for 69. He led the league and wins. He was fourth in goals against, he was eighth
in save percentage. He was seventh in goals saved above expected. Like, he was really good.
So, you know, he has that capability of it.
He also has the capability to lay an egg.
And so I think when they lay an egg,
they want it to be more of a Robin's egg
rather than like a T-Rex, right?
So I think that's kind of the difference
that they're looking for.
Just a little bit more consistency in his game.
And they say this country has no poets, ladies and gentlemen,
Jason Greger. Outside of the outside of the goaltending
situation with with the Edmunds and Nolars, one of the things
that I think a lot of people found interesting, curious. Paul
Coffey no longer on the bench. How'd you how'd you receive that
news?
Yeah, I wasn't surprised by that.
To be honest, Paul was kind of a year by year.
I do know that, you know, his back was giving him a little bit of problems
down on the bench all the time.
I think, you know, Paul came in and no one can debate that he helped change the mindset of some of their defenders.
He challenged him and said, guys, I just want you to make plays.
I don't care if you're Evan Bouchard.
I don't care if you're Evan Bouchard. I don't
care if you're Vincent de Harney. You're not just now
sometimes you have to go off the glass and out but I want guys to
make plays. And so Edmonton improved there. Um, I think it
came down to, you know, a variety of different things. I
think it was the coach kind of wanted to have his own choice on
who he wanted
from guys he worked with.
Uh, you know, I, I wasn't sure how 100% coffee was, you know, all in, if you're
going to be a coach, you got to be a hundred percent all in.
So I think it was kind of a multi decision between all sides here.
And you know, like coffee was old school, Jeff, he didn't, he didn't do a lot of
video time with his defense when he did most of his coaching in game and talk to them. He was really into kind of the
mindset, a lot of guys and just try to help build them their
confidence more than anything. Like when he went the odd times
when he did show video, he was just showing them, here's all
the plays you make to try to remind the player like, you're
good, because sometimes too often it's like, see what you
didn't do. And he's like, no, no, no, no, no, let's show what
you do. This is what you're capable of. So when I want you to come around the net, I want you to make a play, not
just, you know, hot potato it. So I think he helped like
Bouchard and, and nurse and those guys in different areas.
And now it's a, you know, Stuart will come in and I think
there'll be some tweaks a little bit and what they do. The
biggest tweaks got to be their penalty killer was, you know, it
went from the best, arguably ever in the NHL playoffs to the
second worst all time. So that
wasn't a good, a good switch from one year to the next. But I think that
was a lot of personnel, Jeff, day, Harney gone, CC gone, ECHOM gone.
That's three of their top four defensemen in the 24 playoffs who weren't
there. I know ECHOM came back for the, for the final, but he was a shadow
himself.
Does, does nurse, how last Edmonton question for you Jason, does, does
nurse have to play with Wallman?
Like is that, does that have to be a lock?
Well, Wallman's decent on the right side,
but ideally they get a right defender.
And Darnel Nurse has just got to find
a little bit more consistency in his game.
And when he's on, he can do things and he can be very good.
But then when he's off, at times he wants to say,
well, it's not my fault.
So I think there's got to be a little bit look in the mirror and say, I'm going to take
any of the errors on myself and I'm going to hold myself to a higher standard because
he skates very well.
He's big, he's strong, he does a lot of things.
But yeah, who like who nurse plays with it?
It shouldn't be at this stage of his career that he needs a certain type of guy.
He should be able to excel in his own and then but I don't think like like Kulak he's better off as
a left-defenseman right? Wallman I guess if you're gonna move a lefty to the right side he's the best.

okay are you on the Anaheim hype train I know it's a lot of points to make up but
are the Anaheim Ducks a legitimate wild it's a lot of points to make up, but are the Anaheim ducks a legitimate wild card threat now?
Now, of course, McTavish doesn't have a deal. Dostalva doesn't
have a deal yet. But still, these are all restricted. And we
don't think the path for Beak is done here necessarily. Are you
on the Anaheim train?
I like the ducks. I do. I think, you know, they've obviously been
at the bottom for a time. And it's as much as I like the Ducks. I do. I think, you know, they've obviously been at the bottom for a time. And it's as much as I like the Ducks, Jeff, it's I look at recent trends in the NHL. And in each of the last three seasons, you've had at least three teams in the previous year at 100 points, not make the playoffs. So you look at 100 point teams last year, and you say, Okay, well, based on previous history, a few of those teams are going out. So somebody's gotta replace them.
Now Vancouver in the West is an option for sure.
But after that, like the Ducks,
I don't mind the Ducks because I really like Dustal.
You know what, he's an RFA, he'll get his contract here.
I'm not too worried about it.
Same with McBavish.
They'll get it done.
Now, they could be a wild card team, I think,
if they stay healthy and lots of their young
guys continue to develop, right?
Which is not always the case, right?
Like Jackson Lacoma is a name that probably a lot of your listeners, a lot of people around
the NHL don't even follow, right?
So it's a late game for the Eastern guys.
Jackson Lacoma is a hell of a defense man.
He can play tons of minutes.
So you've got your number one defenseman on that team, right?
He's a low end number one at this stage of his career, but you know what?
He's a really good defender.
So you can build out around him.
They've got some meanness and some toughness on their back end, which I think they like.
They're trying to create identity.
And I think, you know, Joel Quenville will come in.
He hasn't coached in the league for a while.
So I think he's going to have lots of energy and lots of enthusiasm.
Jay Woodcross, a former head coach, a guy who's trying to reprove himself, reestablish himself.
So I think like their whole organization, Jeff, has a lot of from the coach down,
a lot of guys who feel like they got to prove something. And I think that can be pretty powerful.
I think the blue line is fascinating. Like I'm with you a million percent on Jackson Lacombe.
Then you look at the, you look at that left side, Jackson Lacombe,
Olin Zellweger and Pavel Minchikov. Those are your three. Then you go to the right side
and it's Radko Gudis and Jacob Truba. Just like two killer Andrew Helleson as the third pair. Just
like two murderers on the right side and then all these like graceful skaters, great puck movers,
you know guys that every
single team wants.
It's a fascinating back end.
It really is.
It's a, it's a, well, it is.
But even look up front, right?
Like Zegris has gone, um, they, they've changed their identity there a little bit.
And, um, I really like Leo Carlson, like I think Cutter Goche is a player to watch for
that, you know, he could be poised.
Like, like I'm curious to see like a few things at play here.
Like I know Joe Quinville had lots of success in, in, in, in, in Chicago.
There's no doubt, but that's, that's a lot.
There's a decade ago, right?
So can you re can you manufacture that again?
Now he doesn't have to have cup success, but can he help them get to the playoffs? Right? That to me is the end. And I
think he's smart by bringing in a younger assistant coach who,
who obviously left the NHL not the way he wanted in Edmonton.
So it is a fascinating organization. But yeah, Jeff, I
have them as a team. Now you mentioned it is it's tough to
make up, you know, it's easy to improve from like San Jose can
improve 20 points this year, doesn't matter. And there's
still 70 doesn't matter. Like. Yeah, it doesn't matter.
So Anaheim, you still gotta make a pretty big commitment
to consistency,
because that's how you're gonna become a playoff.
Absolutely.
Okay, what do you got in your show later on today?
Well, you know what?
We're actually talking the,
did you see the home run derby last night?
I did not, I was out with my kid at a ball game.
So they basically had a measure off Jeff, which it's it's
Oh, yeah, yeah. Yeah. Okay. I say it's not a measure of like
it's they're projecting where the ball goes. And it was like
400. We're literally talking like centimeters that was the
difference. And I'm like, come on now like you're it's not like
you actually see it land right on the field to know exactly where like they missed a great opportunity now. Like you're, it's not like you actually see it land, right? On the field to know exactly where.
Like they missed a great opportunity to have a, you know,
a swing off, but I really liked the home run Derby.
I think it's great.
So we're going to kind of implement that into hockey and,
you know, could you do something better or different
at the skills competition in hockey?
Attention Patrick Burke from the department of player safety,
who also has a lot to do with the skills competition at the All-Star Game Hall.
Make sure Patrick is tuned in.
Great stuff, Jason.
We'll chat soon, pal.
Jeffrey, have a good one.

we'll bring on from the fourth period our good friend Dave Penauda to talk
about all things happening in and around the NHL. Just things that we don't see
or necessarily hear of. First of all Dave, it looks like much like my producer Vic
who looks like he's in a prison cell, where are you right now?
I'm going through a move.
So yes, the aesthetics are not as pleasing as they may be.
Cell mates with Vic here all of a sudden.
I'm like, did you just like pass the camera over to Dave?
Okay, I wanna clear up a couple of things
right off the bat.
First of all, so how much is the contract for Alex Tuck?
They haven't even, well, they haven't talked numbers yet.
Let's clear this up, let's clear this up, clear this up.
Yeah, so I reported last week,
preliminary talks have started.
Now, I try to, as best I can, differentiate
or try to explain the differentiation between
talks and negotiations. Negotiations haven't started yet, but both sides have relayed that
they want to get a deal done. They'd like to get to the finish line on this at some point,
and that they will get to numbers, term, and dollars in the not too distant future. But the
Sabres want to get him locked up.
Tuck is interested in sticking around long term as well.
So they're going to get to the nitty gritty and actually get into negotiations.
But I would imagine that's eight, eight and a half in that in that range per year.
Something to have something like that in that in that kind of landscape.
But they need to have that kind of landscape.
But they need to have that part of the conversation and that's what's coming next.
Right. And you know, Buffalo is once again an interesting team.
It's one that, you know, the playoff drought is the big story and that one's well told.
They lose J.J. Paterka. I think a lot of Sabres fans were
underwhelmed at the return there. I'm trying like like every year Dave I say
the same thing. I was mentioning the Sabres off the top of the show. Like I
still I go back to the French connection and the voice of Ted Darling. I always
say like I just want the Sabres to be good. Like their fans deserve it. They're
they have great hockey fans there that don't just show up when the Sabres are playing,
but for national games,
like the Buffalo market audience is always big,
like great hockey fans there.
And you just want something to have some stickiness finally.
But I look at what they've put together again so far,
and it's more similar than different from a team
whose story is playoff
futility after playoff futility. Am I missing something here?
I think, well, I mean a little sentimental for me too. The first ever NHL game I ever saw
was Montreal against Buffalo at the Forum in Montreal way back. So I think it was late 80s.
Adams division baby. way back. So I think it was late 80s. Adam's going back that. So I've always, yeah, I've
always had, and then for like five or six games in a row, my dad would get tickets and
it'd be always against Buffalo for some reason. But look, yeah, that market's overdue, long
overdue. You feel for them that there's a ton of frustration there. I think they've
gotten, they're almost out of the,
you don't want to be here, we don't want you here kind of mentality.
And that's, you know, Dylan Cousins, they make that move,
they bring in Josh Norris.
Puturka, they pull that trade off.
I don't mind the return.
I like Kesselring.
I think he's an underrated defenseman.
I like what he's going to bring to that blue line. And Josh Dome, mid-six kind of player, will see what he can get to.
So I don't mind that return under the circumstances. And then Byron, what are they going to end up
doing with him? He gets his two-year contract yesterday. Does that help facilitate a trade
knowing that that portion is taken out of the way? I think it does, Dave. I think I really do.
I think that all of a sudden now
that question has been answered,
and now you're Kevin Adams, you can,
because I believe that there's a feeling internally
that the blue line is too young,
and that they've spent too long
with too many young players here,
and they need some veterans in the top four.
They need some older guys in the top four.
And even with that, I mean, and you mentioned,
you know, they moved up to Turkey, you mentioned earlier,
they're looking for top six as well.
So if they can even move out Byron
and bring in somebody to help stabilize that top six,
that's something that I think they would like to do.
But again, you've gotten out of the,
okay, you dealt with the cousin situation
and you handle that at the trade deadline.
You deal with the Turkinau, you've dealt with the Turkinau,
excuse me, now you're dealing with Bayram.
Tage Thompson's locked in, Dahlene's locked in,
Power's got the long-term deal.
You've got presumably Tuck who wants to stick around.
So you've got the foundational pieces. Now you've got to Tuck who wants to stick around. So you've got the
foundational pieces. Now you've got to find the right complementary pieces to go
along with that and expand on that foundation. This isn't a, okay you're not
happy here? Well too bad. We were just gonna tough it out and lose again. No, this
is, all right, we've got the pieces that we feel can make up for the guys that
didn't want to be here.
Now we've got the foundation down.
Let's add to this.
Let's add some more layers and bricks to this whole thing and let's build something
positive finally for once.
That's there's a reason why they brought in a guy like Yarmulke Kalanen into the
management side to help Kevin Adams along the way to help build whatever it is that
they're going to build, you know, you know, out in Buffalo. But I think this buy room thing is the last kind of item
on that particular agenda.
And then, but again, whatever the return is,
it's gonna be to benefit this club now and in the future,
not just exclusively looking at future assets.
If they pull off future assets for this job,
they're gonna flip that,
because they want immediate pieces.
For me, maybe the answer is the New York Islanders
to this question, but who's the most interesting team
to you right now?
Combo of them and Pittsburgh.
Just because Pittsburgh's got so many different pieces
that they're willing to move out.
And for me, that's really intriguing because I like that kind of stuff.
So I'm keeping tabs on that. The Islanders have my curiosity more so than anything
just because of what they did, what they pulled off. I like the Heinemann ad as part of that
Dobson mix. A lot. Yeah. That's a really good ad for that club. But it kind of fits the and you're getting somebody in there, there's familiarity for him, that'll help ease him in.
Obviously, you know, him and DeClair and Patrick Wa had a little patching up to do,
and I think that's settled. You know, Pajot's name is out there, but they're not, you know,
desperately trying to move the guy. I get, if I can interject, I don't get the sense that they're
gonna move, I think they are gonna ultimately move Pajow, but I don't think they're gonna do it until
Calritchie gets like 30 games in the American Hockey League.
Like I think when he's ready,
then they pull the trigger on,
that's how it feels to me.
Give the kid 30 games of Rocky Thompson and Bridgeport,
and then pull the trigger on Pajow.
There's no hurry.
There's no hurry whatsoever for the Islanders.
No, and that's the message they've been relaying.
Teams have been calling, or were calling closer to draft and all that.
But you know, Darcy's message has been sure.
I mean, you want to blow me out of the water, I'll do it now.
Otherwise, I'm happy to hold on to him and see where things go.
The season progresses and he's with us and he's with us.
Hey, do you have a thought just because this is the team that just took Matthew Schaefer
first overall,
I'm getting the sense now that this idea
of the decentralized draft
is something we better get used to.
Because we felt there was gonna be one and done.
And the conversations that I've had
the last couple of days with people,
teams are really comfortable not spending this money
and having the comforts
of doing everything from home, which I was told this morning from someone, you know,
the seeds were sort of planted, you know, during the COVID drafts when everything was
done obviously, and nobody traveled. I really get the feeling that this is something that
we're going to have to get used to here. This isn't like we're going to plug our noses for
two years, then go back to it.
I think this one might be here to stay for a long time.
You get that sense?
Yeah, deep, deep sigh.
Deep, deep sigh.
Because I think you're right.
Same kind of, yeah, same kind of messaging.
And I think this was a kind of a combination of,
if we can clean up the production
and speed this up in terms of broadcast,
then we can do this in an efficient way
that's being relayed publicly,
then let's see if we can do that.
And let's keep this going.
Let's give this another shot.
I don't mind that hockey house that they built where the guys are, or,
you know, Hey, welcome to the team with their new GM and all that stuff.
Just keep that separate from the national broadcast.
You want to add that to your socials.
And I think that's part of, that was part of the discussion after the fact.
You want to add that to your team website.
You want to add that to your team's. You wanna add that to your team social networks.
Sure, post that up.
But for the purpose of the broadcast,
that killed like an hour, hour and a half
of trying to finagle that in.
If they can enhance the entertainment value
while allowing some of that content to go exclusive
on social channels and digital,
then I think they're very comfortable in keeping this going beyond what now is going to be next summer.
And this is also the other thing that the league and Steve Maher, who runs the whole thing in the events department,
they were waiting for this so that they can now plan next year.
There have been different cities and markets that are interested in hosting, but they never really had those conversations. I think that's going
to start basically now, now that they know what direction this is going to go in. We'll
see. We'll see. I've heard Detroit wants to get in there. I heard Colorado wants to get
in there.
Montreal.
Denver. Montreal. I think the whole league. That may change. Maybe everyone might go back
to Montreal based on how
everyone loved Montreal a few years ago.
I just do it at Montreal every year as far as I'm concerned.
Montreal's the best.
Yeah, it was awesome.
But I have that Montreal bias.
The other thing that I was sort of sussed out
over the last couple of days.
One of the issues is price point
and teams are spending a lot of money
bringing the whole circus to town.
So here's what I was able to put together, Dave.
There was one outlier who would spend
somewhere in the neighborhood of a million dollars.
Now I don't know who this team is,
but I was told this is an outlier team.
Like the million is nowhere close
with everyone else's spending.
The lowest I heard was $100,000.
Most teams are between 200 to 500,000 for how much they would spend
essentially bring in the whole act, the whole ensemble to a new town. Is that
sympathetic with what you've heard as far as price points go?
Yeah. 400 was kind of like the average across the 32. I'm hoping that 100 is the host team.
That's low. Yes.
The million was the outlier high
and the 100,000 was the outlier low.
Yeah.
That's, yeah.
Yeah, I was under the impression
that 400 is kind of the happy medium across the board.
And yeah, I mean, you multiply that by 32 teams, it's a big chunk of change that, you know, teams don't want to spend and this kind of this, that's, you're saving a little bit.
I mean, from the player side of the union side of things, you're saving a little bit of dough there too,
because that's part of HRR overall when we equate it all.
But the biggest thing out of all of this is entertainment.
If the broadcast is entertaining and the other elements kind of prove to be entertaining as well,
like those GM interviews keep that separate from the national broadcast, all the other stuff,
then I think the league is comfortable moving forward with that.
Whereas, obviously, I mean, you heard Gary talking about it.
This wasn't our idea.
This was the GM's. They wanted it.
Oh, trust me. We all caught it.
Gary wanted to make sure that, no, no, no, no, no, not my idea here.
This is not the way the commissioner wants to do this one.
No chance.
Yeah, no.
Here's one. Every chance he got, he would say got he would say oh totally and I can understand why here's here's one and I I throw this out here
Dave knowing full well it will never happen
But just like it's Tuesday July 15th, and we're just throwing this around me and my buddy Dave
What if the NHL just said?
If you want to stay home, stay home.
If you want to come, come.
How many things you think would go because because all of a sudden, then
it becomes like there's a there's a there's a pressure like, well, hang on.
These are wet. How come? How come our team didn't go?
I know it would never happen.
But could you see like five teams on the floor and everybody else staying home with
the fan base saying like, what are you, what's going on here?
We're squeezing the beaver on the nickel till it squeals.
Get your people over there to the rig for the draft.
What about top five? Get the top five picks.
You guys have a presence there and everybody else can stay home. I Don't know trying to find a happy kind of
Kind of doubts because that would you know how I mean, I always you guys are competitive, right?
Like did you not fight like shouldn't the home team be there like should the home team?
Yeah, I found that a little cuz like is that you know, a was like we're here
Yeah, we're in else. They were in El Segundo, they were at the Toyota Center, they were at the practice rink,
and they had one representative kind of in the back.
I was side-staged for everything.
And all the PR teams were kind of right behind me.
Some had one person, some had like three.
But everyone was just kind of sitting there going, hmm.
I mean there were some teams that didn't even have a first round pick.
They were still, they still had their rep there and they were just like,
all right, I guess.
Just in case, just in case.
Yeah. Can't even have a pop.
Well, an adult one anyway.
They have to wait.

A quick gloss here, I'm gonna let you go in a second.
Do you have a, this is probably for more
when the whole big document comes out
and we have bigger conversations about it.
Did anything really surprise you
as all the information started to leak out about the CBA?
The only one I was a little surprised at was the double retention.
Have you ever heard anyone complain about that?
Have you ever heard it? I'm with you, Dave. That came out of nowhere.
That's why I'm surprised, yeah.
Who's ever complained about that? So if they did, they did a hell of a job keeping it quiet because, uh,
that was never something that was even brought up in the, in like dress code.
I mean, you even heard about that being, that's going to be lucid.
This wasn't even a topic of discussion at any point, at least when,
when I was asking around about it, 75 day regular season gap or time period between retaining on a twice on a player's contract.
And I haven't read the, or at least I don't remember the exact language,
and maybe you have it, correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that includes the off season, right?
Like if someone gets traded and retained now,
they still have to wait 75 regular season days.
Regular season days.
They're very sensitive.
You know, I can recall this coming out in 2005.
One of the things I asked Bill Daley about,
about the salary cap, and I asked him, I said,
how would you feel about the idea of cap cash?
You ever heard of this concept, cap cash?
So let's say the Buffalo Sabres,
and you're gonna be $5 million shy,
you could trade that $5 million cap cash
to another team that can go $5 million over.
All the money gets accounted for anyway,
and it's all split 50-50 down the middle by way of linkage,
but the NHL is very sensitive about anything that resembles cap cash.
Yeah, they don't want that because that's in their mind.
In their mind, that's a serious competitive advantage for.
You know, the Toronto's, the New York's, the LA's, the Chicago's.
We'll give you a draft pick for cap space. Yeah.
Right. Yeah, they don't wanna deal with that.
Especially now that they've tried to figure out
this playoff cap balance situation, LTIR and all that stuff.
Oh, it's all fun.
Take the CBA to the beach, everybody.
Enjoy your summers.
Dave, thanks much as always.
Best of luck with the moving.
Moving always sucks, man.
Good luck.
Good luck to you.
I have yet to meet the person who's had a good move.
So I wish the best for you, pal.
You be good.
Thanks buddy, see you later.
Here is Dave Pena from the fourth period joining us here.
Yeah, I never, I haven't heard anybody complaining
about double retention on a trade.
If anything, it's just a way to facilitate something
that fans love and that is more trades
Just another way to make it happen in a pretty restrictive system in a triple cap league
Where a lot of players have no trade and no movement clauses
How we're adding something else to make trades even tougher
Jelle Selvic, can you make sense of that for me, please?
I can't
I'm already tired of this offseason. We're two weeks in there's nothing happening. Nothing, but that's okay
That's a big step. You know what? Here's the thing though like in the offseason you can make the argument during the regular season too
It moves at two speeds super super slow and super fast.
And right now it's kind of in super slow mode. Let's just get a Doug Armstrong offer sheet
game going here. What do you think is holding up the market? Like usually it's someone we're
waiting. Oh, when once I heard once Ehlers signs, now we're going to get to business.
And then Ehlers signed and Cricket.
Yeah. I think I wonder how many teams are waiting to see what happens with arbitration.
Maybe. I mean, I'm throwing darts on this one to see if there are any offer sheets.
I mean, that usually happens in August, obviously, and finishes up around mid August. I'd be
curious to see what happens come around August 15. Come around August 15.
So-
Give me a month.
So then we can just sort of, you know,
spin our wheels and wonder about, you know,
which team you'd like to play for
and would you knife your buddy in the back
to take his spot on a hockey team?
And your answer, prison Selvick, is absolutely.
I would say, to the point where you wouldn't even stab him in the back,
you'd stab him in the front.
Yes.
He would not mind if he if he saw your face while you did it.
And you pull the jersey off of him to put it on your on your back.
If you know how me and my buddies operate, it's all about chirping each other.
That's how you show each other.
I've been on the road with you.
I've been on the road with you, but I know.
Don't I know.
Just rib rib rib nonstop. So it's like, ha, I took your job.
Took your job. Yeah, sorry about your luck, sucker.
Yeah, exactly.
Um, Zeev Boyum and Morning Cup of Hockey. Promo or go-go? Hit it.
Correct. Okay, so we're going to mix this in with FanDuel if that's okay with you.
Oh, we are? Well, let me do the promo then. Hang on.
Alright, could you do that for us?
The sheet, as we know, ladies and gentlemen, is powered by FanDuel.
Home of the same game parlay, make every moment more on FanDuel.
FanDuel, proud to connect fans to the major sports moments that matter.
To them, Zeve Boyum. Oh, here we go. Call the trophy Trophy. Rookie of the Year.
I was going to say, who was it?
I think I was on with...
Who was it on with? Was it with you?
No, but the question was, Demidoff or the field?
Oh, Demidoff or the field.
Yeah.
You asked me Demidoff or Bouillon.
You take the field, because you like Bouillon.
Yesterday you asked me Demidoff booyah, and I said
And now here we are 24 hours later
recently I had to listen to
Zeeb we him speak. Yeah, and aliquin is howl man. He's great
He might be my favorite interview that we've done on cup. Ah, yeah other than you of course you
Mean me and Pat maroon. Oh Yeah I mean, me and me and Patty right there.
So well spoken. We did the Johnny Laz Colby Cohen. We'll keep you 1520 and we kept them for an hour.
So well spoken. An hour with Zeve Boyam. We did an hour with Ziv Boyam. Did you do the whole story about how much mom used to have to drive him?
No, they-
Oh man.
They, they talked about McKenna and CAA.
Talked about his career, how hard it's been or how cool it is to start your
season in the, uh, in the playoffs, which is your career in the playoffs,
which is crazy to me.
Um, just so, so, so, so well spoken, so motivated.
And so I changed my pick.
And also because you heard him speak because I heard him speak.
That's it. And Jeff, you swim in the shallowest pool, man.
I swear. Jeff, let me ask you something.
Really? I mean, on this topic, like, okay, Jeff, last week, you said really. I mean, on this topic, like, Jeff, last week you said this, now you're saying this.
That pisses me off.
That pisses me off.
It's like, I got new information now.
So yesterday I got some new information about Zeebouyam and now I'm changing my Calder pick
from Demidol to Bouyam.
You've heard me use this analogy.
You've heard me use this analogy before.
Wise people never make up their minds. Wise people never firmly decide.
Information is not a final destination. It is a temporary staging post.
Right? The minute you let the cement harden around any of your ideas is the minute you stop growing.
You know, there's actually here. Yes. Let's see
what I can add to my book. Oh it's not a unlearn something daily. Are you gonna
elaborate on that for me? So the man of the universe there that's an old Tao was
saying the man of the university learns something daily the man of the Tao
unlearns something daily
Which means take every every single day take everything you think you know and unlearn it
And keep your mind open to different possibilities
I look at that every single day and remind myself don't make up your mind
Leave your mind open for different possibilities. No one's got it figured out. I don't have it figured out
You don't have it figured out bryan bro have it figured out. You don't have it figured out.
Brian Burke in that book behind you
doesn't have everything figured out.
As long as you're in the process
of unlearning something daily,
you're always gonna learn something.
But the only way you can learn something
is if you unlearn something else first, right?
The overflowing cup cannot have anything added to it.
Unlearn something daily, Vix, which is why I'll bust on you for like 24 hours.
Now, I will look at you and say, hang on, because of an interview?
You're changing your Calder pick?
Yup.
Dubious at best. But okay.
Just promise me you'll listen. I know you will. But promise me you'll listen.
Oh, I'll listen oh of course there's
so many times during the interview we're like holy crap how's this kid 19 how is he only 19
years old it's insane how well spoken he is and we say it about a lot of people they have a future
in media I mean I'd be shocked if he's not hosting a podcast when he's all said and done I mean
hosting a podcast when he's all said and done. I mean, whenever that is.
He won't be able to take the pay cut by the way.
Seriously, who wants that pay cut?
He's such a natural, so good.
Who wants that pay cut?
Yeah, I remember talking to him last year
at the combine before the draft
and he was one of the kids that blew us away.
Mainly because of his story
and the story of the big, the parental sacrifice.
I know all kids have that
and you don't get that far
with a lot of other people sacrificing their lives for you,
most notably your parents and grandparents, et cetera.
But his mom is a starter of that family.
His mom is the 100%-
I was reading about some crazy drives and stuff, right?
Every single day,
that drive that she made.
And he goes out of his way to talk about it.
But listen, I love him.
I'm really, I thought he was gonna go even,
that's one of those pics we're gonna look at
years and years later and go,
Minnesota got Ziv Boyum where?
Are you serious?
He's that good.
Well, I mean, listen, Colby and Johnny have told you
all about him, right?
How good he is and Chris' story.
Anyhow, all right, so here's the plan now
for the next little while.
So I got a kids baseball tournament
where I'm a sports
uber again, which is my job now Vic. So what do you do for a living?
I'm a sports uber. I drive kids around to rinks and to diamonds and now golf
courses for my oldest kid who's now fallen in love with golf. I am NOT a
golfer. I don't know anything about golf as I always like to say Vic. You take me
out the best two balls I hit is when I step on a rake. I don't know anything about golf. As I always like to say, Vic, you take me out. The best two balls I hit is when I step on a rake.
I don't know anything about golf.
I can't, I'm like TJ, I can't help you, bud.
You're on your own for golf.
I will drop you off and you just text me
and tell me when you want me to pick you up.
But that's my life now.
And then we're gonna be taking off for a few days
after we get back from that tournament.
So we're probably looking end into the month or into August,
but we will keep this feed hot and we will still do more shows.
And, um, Portuguese walrus,
Jeff drives his kids around in the sheet RV.
Oh yeah. You know, one of these days, uh, you ever been,
you ever taken an RV trip before, by the way?
Never.
I've always wanted to.
Never taken an RV trip.
I've always wanted to just like peace out to Algonquin Park and an RV and just like
vanish, just become a rumor for like a month.
And just like go RV livin' man.
RVs.
Yeah.
I mean, so you'd go to Algonquin, that's your spot?
You know why? Because the drive wouldn't be that long.
Although, you know, I could totally see myself doing.
I'd be totally down to going to like Wyoming.
Every time I talk to Bobby Hulik, he's always like, yeah, you got to come down.
You got to come down. It's beautiful.
One of these days I'm going to take him up on the offer.
I could see myself doing that.
Although, you know what?
Actually, I've been reading a lot of um uh Cormac McCarthy lately
so maybe Texas. Yeah. Like take an RV like I'm reading No Country for Old Men right now so maybe
like go down to Texas like but around the border. No offense to anyone that's listening from Wyoming
but it has never crossed my mind to visit Wyoming. I would love to. Like it's just never been on the radar.
That's all I'm trying to say. Maybe Maybe it's just more of a comment on me.
The older I get, Vic, the more I'm way into two things,
silence and open space.
I'm getting there.
For me, it's just like distraction, distraction,
cats and laser pointers and activity and noise and noise.
I want silence and I want open space.
And that to me is Wyoming.
So yeah, sign me up, sign me up for Wyoming.
I think Crosby go and skate there
and was late for an All-Star.
Gave him a year, gave him crap.
I'm like, if anyone deserves to go to like Wyoming to skate,
just on a goofball and maybe be a day late for All-Star,
it's fricking Sidney Crosby.
Oh geez.
Anyway, so you have any closing thoughts on today's episode?
Anything you want to promote?
Anything you want to share?
Any shout outs you want to give?
Speak now.
Jay Rosell's birthday tomorrow.
No way.
Tune in to the spring break.
Yeah, he turns the big 40 tomorrow.
Oh, big 408.
So how did his fast go?
Last time I was all with him, he was fasting.
I was really proud of him. It really well, but uh over the weekend
His family they went out to I don't know where he goes to somewhere in bc
Yeah, he went wakeboarding and tore his pec
So yeah on his 40th birthday weekend. Yeah torn pack
poor guy
Buddy Yeah, torn peck. Poor guy. Buddy. Oh, Jeremiah. Yeah. Park my RV in Alaska. I am so down with that.
Oh, yeah, that would be awesome.
Oh man. I'm so down. I've always wanted to go to Alaska.
Been to Yukon. Been to Yukon. Yukon's cool. Yukon's great.
