Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome once again to get to the sheet. And welcome and good afternoon from Rochester. Mini Stickland for a lot of kids. Hockey tournament here. And Zach, I don't know if you ever, if you ever got this when you were a kid as you checked into a hotel for a, hockey tournament. Did you ever get a youth hockey team code of conduct warning?
Starting point is 00:00:37 I actually think I did. Really? Respect for others, quiet hours. No knee hockey, room etiquette, respect for hotel property, etc. Did you ever get one of these? Handed to us as we... No knee hockey. That's what they called it.
Starting point is 00:00:52 No knee hockey. No knee hockey. For safety and consideration of other guests, the knee hockey is strictly prohibited inside the hotel. Please refrain from playing any form of hockey in the hallways, rooms, or public areas. The kids will adhere to that because it said so on a piece of paper. And impulsive teenagers will always look at that and say, well, the paper said we shouldn't do this.
Starting point is 00:01:18 So we're not going to play knee hockey, even though they've all brought like multiple mystery minis. This one with like, it looks like a Danny Heatley style tape job. I don't know if I've ever seen my kid do that one. Nonetheless, and he's probably, and he's in the background now going like, who's Danny Heatley? Don't make me feel older than I already am. 50 and 070. Come on.
Starting point is 00:01:38 Welcome to the program. A lot to get to on today's show. And specifically, something we wanted to start off with on today's program, as we like to sometimes feature the lighter side, the goofier side, the funnier side of the game. When we talk about the Islanders, lately we've been talking a lot about Matthew Schaefer and for good reason. But today we're talking about Cal Paul Mary and his penalty yesterday.
Starting point is 00:02:02 And specifically, him being given the option, a buffet of choices. Which choice would you like for your infraction, Mr. Paul Mary, courtesy referee, Kyle Raymond. From Red Deer, we should point out as well. Here's Kyle Raymond last night. It's going to be a high stick, it looked like. Pick. You want to slosh or a cross-cent? Now, that one is 41.
Starting point is 00:02:27 Two-in-minds across-step. me on the mic. Do you want a cross or do you want to, oh my God? Do you want a high stick? You want to cross check? You want a hook. You want to slash, take your pick, whatever you want. Either way, you go into the box late in the first period yesterday.
Starting point is 00:02:43 Kyle Palmer, you sit down. The best one is the, and it reminds me of that, is you can't do that. You know, remember that call? You can't do that. Yeah, yeah, you can't do that. So here's the, whatever you want, you can't do that. You can do whatever you want pretty much out there, but you can't do that. Sounds like a meatloaf song here.
Starting point is 00:03:02 And that's another dated reference that you probably don't get that I'm hoping some people listening or watching the show do get. But nonetheless, we'll move along. Here's the thing I've always felt about open mics on the ice. How many times have you heard someone say, man, I wish they would just mic up the players, maybe have like an alternate stream where you can hear the conversation on the ice. I want to hear what the players are saying. I'm not that interested. in hearing what the players are saying most of it's predictable
Starting point is 00:03:32 like just predictable crass swears at each other no one's profoundly clever to me the more compelling thing if we're going to mic up anybody on the ice officials to hear officials i don't want to hear players talk to players we know what that's all about i want to hear officials talk to players and players talking back to officials and situations like Kyle Raymond turning on the microphone a little bit too early to beak off at Kyle Paul Mary. I don't know. I find that endlessly entertaining. Anything involving officials and communication.
Starting point is 00:04:07 The other thing that was one more side tangent about officials and media, do you remember the ref cams on top of the helmets that were around for like a hot five minutes? Yeah. I was of the mind that that was discus. continued because the officials wanted to be compensated, essentially, for wearing cameras on their helmets, which I can understand. And if you're going to make yourself part of the product, you should be compensated for it. Or if you're expected to be part of the product, you should be compensated for it. But I had a conversation with someone this morning, just about all things officials coming off the Raymond situation from last night. We're talking about it. And this
Starting point is 00:04:48 person said to me, actually, the ref cams, the association, the referees association wasn't a big fan of them because it tended to make referees look bad in one specific way. The cameras are on top of the helmets. They weren't at eye level. So you could have a situation where there's a gold mouth scramble. And because the cameras on the helmets shoot wide, the eyes could be focused on trying to find the puck, whereas off a couple of feet away,
Starting point is 00:05:20 there could be a situation where a high stick, a cross check or whatever, happens and the camera visual that you get makes it look like the official is looking right at that infraction when really the official is looking for the loose puck and trying to make the call on that and it just makes the referees look poor essentially what i'm saying is there's not there's not really a good way around it but it did provide a pretty cool visual i don't know if you remember those they did in the preseason a number of years ago and it looked fantastic it looked really cool but again there's going to be the knee jerk like he was looking right at the play and he didn't call it like no he wasn't looking at the play just because the top of
Starting point is 00:06:00 his forehead looked like it was looking at the play it doesn't necessarily mean that he was but I digress welcome to the sheet for this Friday October 24th I'm in Rochester home of the Americans and Zach as you mentioned the other day this is a very Rochester Americans friendly program so happy to be there even though I'm not going to get a chance to go watch Roch face off against Laval tonight and then they're hitting the road so I can't even go and watch them tomorrow either. But nonetheless, greetings from Rochester and coming up on the program today, the blueprint is powered by Fandual. Download the app today and play your game courtesy of our friends at Fandual. And coming up on the show, someone who's quickly becoming a
Starting point is 00:06:45 fixture here on a lot of programs, including his own, Wednesdays at 3 o'clock, o'clock eastern with erfang gufar uh dfo run down insider edition day pan yoda stops by we'll talk a little bit more about hot mics we'll talk about matthew shaffer who continues to impress despite the fact that he didn't get at a point last night send him back to eerie uh adrian kempi and that contract situation with the los angeles kings how about the horns down yesterday from adrian kempi to all the dallas fans yesterday is the king's won and overtime over the dallas stars uh love but give me more. We'll talk about Boston. We'll talk about Utah. We'll talk about Dallas. We'll talk about Lucas Reichel and we'll do so with Dave Panyoda from the fourth period coming up here
Starting point is 00:07:27 in a couple of moments. Just me or is the NHL getting spicier, Zach? And by spicier, I mean more and more violent. Where once upon a time you could park, you know, once upon it, you could park like, okay, there's going to be like three or four fights tonight. Over the past number of years, it hasn't happened to be that way, even though they're tough guys in the lineup. But whether it's Reeves and Rempe last night and that big San Jose win over the New York Rangers, or whether it was the fight of the night, Tanner Geno and Ross Johnston,
Starting point is 00:07:58 who's having himself a hell of a week for the Anaheim ducks, this was a rough. I was crazy on the ice, Logan Cooley, Hatrick, as my five points for Macklin Sellebini. To me, the fights were the spice to the whole thing. It's, I feel like it's cyclical, right? It's like it goes away.
Starting point is 00:08:18 We're going to go to fast, skilled hockey that's how we're going to play and on all of a sudden it starts coming back here i wonder if part of this and i don't think these guys would admit it now while playing but it would be interesting to hear from them in a while but you know how we're getting to the uh the tick talk dance era let's call it maybe of hockey there's there's guys i know for fact who are not interested in that and i wonder if it's just pissing some of these guys off now i'm not talking about the fights specifically because I don't think Reeves and Rempe are squaring off because they're mad about TikTok dances but I just mean some of the
Starting point is 00:08:54 spiciness and sourness that goes on on in the on the ice that maybe then like leads into some of that where guys are just like I don't like this stuff I'm going to take matters into my own hands or I'm going to get pissed off about something and then the game just gets spicier again because people they get more confident as we saw and then people on the other side say I don't like that at all. I just think that right now we're in an era where we've talked about this before, everybody can play. So what else are you given me?
Starting point is 00:09:26 Right? Everybody can play. Yeah. And so now what are managers looking for? And toughness has returned to the NHL. And it's something that a lot of people are going to have to get used to because I don't think it's going away. And I'm not just talking about fighting.
Starting point is 00:09:39 I'm just talking about rough play in general. It's swinging. Like it kind of went like, I have. I kind of look at it like, I don't know, you know how metronomes go, go back and forth. And sometimes, you know, you need to have an overcorrection one way to come back to the center where things belong. It was one way for a really, really long time. Like, it's called pendulum theory. When things are one way for a very long time, and that was like four-hour games and games with tons of brawls.
Starting point is 00:10:09 And then it swung back the other way and overcorrected with a premium on scale and skating and all, these other wonderful things but it overcorrected that way and now it may have just come to rest at its balance point right now in between like the four-hour brawl games which none of us want and then the highly skilled no hitters on the other end I kind of look at it now and the pendulum is kind of hit the midpoint after the overcorrection but again yeah yeah it's early it's early it's early uh all right um dave pinio is going to stop by here in a couple of seconds This segment is a presentation of the Ninja Crispy 4-1 portable glass air fryer. Check this out.

As we stand by for Dave Panjota, one thing they'll want to mention,
Starting point is 00:11:57 Dave would be up in here a couple seconds. Let me just point one thing out that I think it deserves recognition here. Zach, we talked a lot this week about the Nordiques and the Hartford Whalers. and the celebration of the history of these two franchises, Carolina facing off against the Colorado Avalanche. This was a really good game. 5-4, it ends in a shootout, Seth Jarvis, with just a gorgeous shoot-out move.
Starting point is 00:12:21 He was great the whole game. One goal, one-assist, shoot-out winner, all of it. The goal, by the way, a shorthanded goal because Seth Jarvis. But what's remarkable about this, and the Carolina Hurricanes, you know, they have a blemish on their record. They did lose the other night. But remarkable about this one, you go into Colorado.
Starting point is 00:12:43 You're on this like two week road trip, as we talked about on yesterday's program or the day before. They all run together. And you're starting to see attrition. And specifically, the left side of your defense is gone. Now, Kandre Miller was scratched before last night's game. We don't know what the update is there yet specifically. but Shane Gostis Bear is out.
Starting point is 00:13:09 Jacob Slavin is out. And let's not forget, too. This is a game that all of a sudden had a little bit more national attention on it and all of Carolina's left side of their blue line, poof, gone. Like the closing sequence of the usual suspects with Kaiser Sosei.
Starting point is 00:13:29 I just wanted to throw that out there as a matter of recognition. I thought that was a really gutsy performance by that squad. We'll give him Carrier left the game as well, lower body injury. Eric Robinson leaves a game with an upper body injury in that game. So the Carolina Hurricanes now have a body count attached to them, unfortunately. With that, we'll bring on Dave Panjota from the fourth period from the daily faceoff rundown Insiders Edition alongside Irfan Gafar on Wednesdays at 3 o'clock Eastern. Dave, how are you today?
Starting point is 00:13:59 I'm good. I'm good. I'm jacked because of the season. I'm Jacked because World Series. I'm just feeling it's a good. Friday. It is. And like it was, this is coming off of a wild Thursday too.
Starting point is 00:14:10 And there's a lot to get into, um, with you like sort of insidery and contractee. But before we get there, I showed the Kyle Raymond, um, piece off the top of the show, essentially offering Kyle Paul Mary, a buffet of calls that he could, that he could choose from. Did you see this last night in the Islanders in the Islanders game yesterday? What is, first of all, I always find it more compelling to hear officials miced up. and talking as if they're not miced up, then players. Players, a lot of grunts and groans and FU, and we've all heard that you get close enough to the game,
Starting point is 00:14:43 close enough to the rank, you can hear and understand it. I'm much more interested in hearing officials talk to players. If you added this, if we said, Dave, you can mic up either officials or players. Who would you rather listen to? For me, it's officials. Who is it for you? Oh, it's, it's, yeah, I agree. I'm on the official side.
Starting point is 00:15:04 some players are very entertaining i'll give them that yes um but the official side not only in that game i'm sure the canadians would love to have had the officials miced up last night so they could replay that and go um told you uh we knew you screwed that up um you know i i but yeah that was funny you want slashing or do you want cross check uh all right either way you're getting booked yeah you're you're you made a boo-hoo you got he you got he You guys are up too, Cobb. It's at end of the first period. We're going to sit you down for a deuce here.
Starting point is 00:15:40 Something we haven't talked about, you can shed some light on this one. Something I haven't talked about a lot this year that I kind of thought would have been dealt with already, considering we are approaching double digits in games. One contract specifically, and that is Jason Robertson, and the other, defenseman Thomas Harley.
Starting point is 00:16:02 Where are we at, based on your, you're reporting on both these two players in Dallas? Yeah, it's nothing exciting, nothing sexy. It's status quo. That's what I've been told on both sides. Communication's still there. Lines are open. Everyone's still comfortable and nobody's panicking by any stretch.
Starting point is 00:16:23 I'm with you. I thought at least one of these would have been kind of wrapped up by now. They know the importance. We heard Robertson's name, you know, pop up in speculation going back to last season, especially around the ranting and stuff. But Dallas is like, no, we want this guy. We want him a long-term part of our future. And obviously the same with Thomas Harley.
Starting point is 00:16:41 Now, both are controllable. Both are RFAs. So, you know, it makes the sense of urgency. And as you know, Jeff, everyone loves to work on a deadline. So the sense of urgency isn't exactly there at the moment. And they have a lot of cap space next season, starting next season. On the projected 104, they're at $28 million. So there's enough money to go around.
Starting point is 00:16:58 Those are the only key, you know, primary key free agents Dallas has, both on the RFA and FAA side, and minus a few other pieces. But from what I was told, fluid situation, nobody's panicking, but also nobody seems to be rushing into trying to make something, you know, happen right now. Obviously, everyone knows how important these guys are. The one complicating factor for Dallas here is both players are arbitration eligible. And you know what happens in, arbitration generally, I mean, listen, players can really get a windfall here in arbitration.
Starting point is 00:17:39 And that's why I don't know that the Dallas stars want to get that far, given that they seem to have a forward ceiling of 12 million with Miko Randinen. And look, Jason Robertson could ring the bell going to arbitration, you know, full stop. I don't know that that Thomas Harley is going to, is going to be similar. but then there's, you know, a sort of quasi-myro-Haskin and cap on the blue line as well. Like how much are these two facts, like the Ranton and Deal, the Hayskin and deal, how much are those two contracts mitigating factors and all of, maybe more so for Robertson.
Starting point is 00:18:18 Yeah. He'll be 27 when this contract starts. I know that Dallas isn't exactly thrilled with long-term contract for players, long-term contracts for players late in their 20s, but nonetheless, the RFA status with the hands. Hammer and also the internal caps of Rantanin and Aiskenen. I think Rantan has more of an impact or that contract has more of an impact on these types of discussions with related with regards, excuse me, to Robertson for a number of reasons.
Starting point is 00:18:47 One, that contract was done recently. That was done obviously last year. And that was of the understanding of how the trend was going with respect to the salary cap. I think and would suspect that Harley is going to either hit or. surpass the high-skinned number on his next deal. I don't think that's a significant bar in terms of top-tier. I think there's a willingness, or at least an understanding, that that's likely depending
Starting point is 00:19:15 on overall term, to exceed that figure. But I think the rant and in deal has more of an impact with respect to negotiations in terms of number plateaus and things of those lines. And that's also what's complicated things, to a certain extent, in terms of just not getting it done already, because how many guys are. going to have eight figures moving forward on on the same roster even though the cap's jumping up and even though there's more money to spend and tom galardi the owner is not afraid to dish out the money for it but how many guys you have to be responsible how many guys are going to be in the
Starting point is 00:19:48 eight figures and then how much and how high in the eight figures for the immediate future that's a factor for both of these guys because these these could easily both be and and likely will be eight figure deals on aavs uh it feels to me like I'm curious your thoughts on this one They do the Harley deal before the Robertson deal so they know how much money they have to deal with. Does it feel that way to you, Dave? It feels like that to me. Yeah, yeah, because the conversations with Robertson
Starting point is 00:20:14 seem to have gone or have been a little bit lengthier than that with Harley. And I think because of the trade speculation last year, that was a factor. You know, teams love to vulture in and try to pluck guys away every now and again, given situations. but Dallas and Jim Nill have stood pretty firm on their desire to keep them.
Starting point is 00:20:35 But I'm with you on this one. I think Harley is likely to be, it seems like there's an easier pathway there. But again, I haven't gotten an indication that anything is close on either front, but it doesn't mean that nothing is getting there. I could see the Harley deal happening and then figuring out the Robertson deal a little bit later on. As I said, 28 million in Capspace next year as of now on the projected numbers. that's still a lot of room to play with for, you know, the bulk of the roster, not just these two guys. Let me throw in one midi, another mitigating factor here, too.
Starting point is 00:21:06 Maverick Bork changed agents in the offseason. And you know what that means? When you change agents, you want something to happen. Namely, I think Bork is suspecting that he's going to have a monster season and would like to translate that into a monster payday. So to your previous point about who's getting what decimal point, let's throw that. you know spice into the chili as well um Boston Bruins Boston Bruins uh Zaka middle stat I know we're not even you know 10 games in here to the season but are we already starting to see a market emerge in Boston I mentioned the Volt I mentioned the vultures um yeah there
Starting point is 00:21:47 there's a lot that are at least circling on on Boston right now you lose six in a row that tends to happen and you're hearing the frustration from the guys in the room and on the ice like They're relaying how much it sucks right now to lose. Yeah, these are two guys that, I mean, no stranger to the rumor mill. Their names were out there last season. Obviously, Middlestat bounced around. But Zaka, same situation. His name popped up around deadline time.
Starting point is 00:22:11 His name popped up again in the summer. They both have two years left on their contract. Midlstadt has a no trade list that kicks in July 1. Zaka's got, I can't remember, I think it's an 8th or 10 team list, something along those lines. in terms of a no trade list. But he's at 4.75 million A.V. Middle stats at 5.75.
Starting point is 00:22:31 Depending how long this little slump they're in goes, I think we're going to hear their names popping up a little bit more regularly throughout the season, quite frankly. Because these are two guys that I think Boston's willing to continue to explore on. Middle stat, they're going to sell the versatility there because he can't play center. He's playing the wing right now. But, you know, Zokka is the one because of that cap hit especially.
Starting point is 00:22:54 that I think some teams are going to look at and I wonder about Vancouver there. I've mentioned this week here on the network as well, just about Vancouver's search for a center and how they've explored interest and poked around on Zaka in the past. That could be a target for them. Also, again, lower AAB overall at 475.
Starting point is 00:23:13 That's pretty, pretty, pretty palatable for a lot of teams that are looking for centers. Let me throw a... I'm going to try to leave some breadcrumbs here. So Pavazaka, represented by Paul Capizano at Cortex, former client of Kent Hughes at Cortex. I don't know, the bunch of Boston and Montreal get together to do a whole lot of deals, but could that one make sense? You know, I get the correlation, obviously.
Starting point is 00:23:47 You know, there, I think if Montreal does address or eventually address their center position at 2C, I think they would go for somebody with a little more pedigree. Full respect to Pavel Zocan, he's off to a really good start to the season. I think if they do make a move, the Canadians, and I think there's a willingness, I know there's a willingness to add for Montreal and insulate the young guys with some veteran presence or controllable veteran presence that complements their top six.
Starting point is 00:24:17 I think they'd like to aim higher, quite frankly. Again, full respect to Zaka and his capabilities. but I think the Habs, if they're going to address the two-seat, and Kirby Dock came back from injury and played last night, and that was a good sign for them, at least. But they want to, I think they're going to want to look for a bigger fish. If that's what falls into their lap, perhaps, but I don't see Boston doing the Habs any favors.
Starting point is 00:24:41 No. And that's why I sort of couch that in one very specific way. Old Adams division rivals will go all the way back, not doing a whole lot of trades amongst one another. Jacob Markstrom, New Jersey Devils, contract discussions, hitting pause on the tape deck? Yeah, and set to resume, I think, in the not too distant future, you know, with his injury, and they kind of played with everybody today with posting a picture on X of Markstrom just means that he's coming back from his injury a little bit ahead of schedule.
Starting point is 00:25:13 So that's a good sign for the Devils, but he's been back on the ice for a little bit. They couch negotiations while he was out, chatted with Tom Fitzgerald. GM a few days ago and they're good with the situation. He emphasized how much that they want to keep Markstrom as part of their family. He also indicated that, look, this is a different situation because he's a 35 plus guy. So, you know, the negotiations are a little bit different. They can, I would imagine they're going to look to incentivize this deal with different bonuses that are going to come into play and the structure of this deal is going to look different
Starting point is 00:25:45 than some other deals that are out there, but again, because of the 35 plus contract. but they like him. He's very confident that Cheryl is that they will get something done. And they just wanted to let him kind of heal, focus on recovery. And then getting back to the drawing board on negotiations. It sounds like there's some pieces that are kind of there, that there's an understanding, but they have to fine-tune things. We'll see how quickly they can get to the finish line on this one.
Starting point is 00:26:12 But I expect those negotiations to get back at it in the pretty near future. went healthy one of the best goaltenders in the in the entire NHL full stop okay last night Dallas L.A overtime winner Adrian Kempai
Starting point is 00:26:28 the horns down like give me this all day all the time one of the highlights in an already highlight filled season around the NHL what's happening with as we're just you know watching it says over time there's Quentin Byfield slides it across
Starting point is 00:26:44 Kempay scores and here comes the horn turns down it, right in front of someone wearing a Madano 9. It's just beautiful. What's happening with Adrian Campaign in the Kings, Ken Holland, General Manager here? Expiring contract. Ah, look, he's emphasizing that he needs to get paid. His last Otee goes, he gets a bow and arrow.
Starting point is 00:27:06 So just hitting the bullseye on his number, which is going to start with an 11th, at the very least at this point. This is another situation where they tabled negotiations. I just wanted to see how the season was going to get going for not just Kempe but for the LA Kings but this is another one that they're expected later this month so presumably as early as this weekend if not next week to get back to the negotiating table and to resume those discussions between Ken Holland their GM
Starting point is 00:27:33 and J.P.B.R.I.A.A. the agent for Kempe. I don't know if L.A. has much of a choice here. I don't know how much wiggle room they have really with respect to negotiations. It's almost a, right, let's try to get a little bit of a lower deal here, if we can structure this in a certain way. It's no secret. Kempe loves L.A. His family loves it there. He wants to be part of that organization for a while, if not the entirety of his career. And with Copee, with Aja Kopitar playing in his last season, it's almost like passing the reins over to him, at least upfront anyway. They're going to, as I said, they're going to get back to the, you know, the talking points very soon here. And I just don't see a scenario where they don't come to terms on an extension.
Starting point is 00:28:21 It's just a matter of the structure of the deal by all accounts. Let me ask you about Utah. Last time we spoke, we were talking about Logan Cooley, hat trick last night, by the way, for the mammoth. Logan Cooley and, you know, is Armstrong looking to sort of use this contract as a bar? We'll see where that one ends up. But, you know, in the offseason, before he resigned with Florida, I was really under the impression that if Aaron Eckblad hit market, Utah was one of the places he may end up.
Starting point is 00:28:48 I think we all wondered about Detroit too. But, you know, Eckblad and Surgachev as your first pair, like that's a real message. And that's where Ryan Smith lives. Like, he wants to go and try to put together the best possible team here, obviously. What do you think happens with Utah this year? I mean, Peturka and the offseason, and that was a biggie. I have a hard time believing, though,
Starting point is 00:29:08 that Armstrong's done. Me too. The short answer is he's not. Like I fully expect, we're hearing all this speculation lately of certain teams that are eventually going to look to go big game hunting that are willing to add a significant piece.
Starting point is 00:29:24 Utah's right there. I mean, they, excuse me, they wanted to make a splash in the off season or a couple splashes in the off season. I like the Peturka edition, but they were looking to do more. And I fully anticipate them, any big wigs that are going to be available this season,
Starting point is 00:29:38 I fully anticipate Bill Armstrong and company in Utah to go right after. They've got full clearance to go make, you know, whatever splashes they need to if it's going to help this team and keep them within not only playoff contention, but beyond. They want to make some noise. Now, they've got some interesting pieces that are playing on expiring contracts, like Nick Schmaltz and a few others, but this is a team with around $5 million in cap space right now.
Starting point is 00:30:04 They're willing to make some type of big moves. And whether it's on defense, whether it's adding somebody else in their core up front, I think it's wide open for them. If there's an opportunity for Bill Armstrong to make his team that much better at any facet of the game and in any area up front or on the back end, he effectively has the green light to do it. And I suspect that Utah will be aggressive in that pursuit this season. And even if they do it, Jeff, like in the summer too. This is a team that not only wants to do that, but understands now that they're becoming. A bit of a destination here for a lot of players, just because of how much the organization takes care of its athletes and their families.
Starting point is 00:30:46 That's a big factor for a lot of guys, and word has been spreading, especially since they unveiled, excuse me, their practice rink. A lot of words started to spread over that, and I tell you, I've talked to players, I've talked to agents, I've talked to people around the league. Utah is becoming an eye-opener for a lot of players going, I might not have considered that, but everything I'm hearing, I'm liking a lot. and that practice ring came together that practice facility came together fast and that is very fast everybody in vancouver right now but the last time we were together did i ask you about
Starting point is 00:31:19 ryan smith and glass banging did we have that conversation no no i don't think so i want i want i want you because i don't know who could be that guy maybe it's maybe it's surga chow because he's he'll just say whatever's on the top of his mind think of that roster and Can you think of anybody on that team who would have the stones to go to the owner, Ryan Smith, and say, buddy, don't be a glass banger? Easy. No. I don't think anybody would because of everything he's done for this team so far.
Starting point is 00:31:54 Like, listen to you can beg the glass? You get a free pass? I'm going to look this way. Yeah, yeah. This will let that happen. You're paying our money, our salaries, and you're doing all the good stuff. You get away with it. But it is.
Starting point is 00:32:05 Friends don't let friends bang the glass. Friends don't let friends bang the, if you're a real friend, you'll say, Ryan. Maybe give him some, maybe like, how about every second game, every third game? Let's just maybe overtime winner, different story. You can get a pass on that, but a casual suggestion, not a demand because, yeah, the man's saying everybody's salaries. The man signing the checks. Anything new with with Reichel these days? this is the story that seemingly has no ending Dave no and and my understanding is he's been
Starting point is 00:32:43 kind of waiting like I think he's accepted the fact that um that's that was the goal coming into the season was they were going to move him obviously it hasn't happened yet and I think he's just kind of been waiting he's been open to that to that change of scenery like he walked into the offseason I had a chance to talk with him at the European media tour over the summer in August and he was looking forward to this season to kind of like prove himself again a few guys were actually. But, you know, he was one of them that was really looking forward to kind of taking next steps.
Starting point is 00:33:14 And then the training camp started and preseason started. And it just didn't seem to find a fit really within at least the top six with Chicago. And then it just said, look, we're going to try to find you a new home. And I think I don't, not necessarily a trade request or demand, but I think it was an understanding of, all right, just move me. Let's move on from here. But Chicago doesn't want to give him away. Like, they don't want to throw him on waivers, obviously.
Starting point is 00:33:39 They don't want to move him for a seventh round pick. They want to get some type of value back for him. And at $1.2 million on a cap hit and on expiring deal, not the biggest dollars, but you also have to throw him out there to show some production. He's been in and out of the lineup a little bit. He had one really good game where he scored a couple goals and had an assist. But that's kind of been it. So if he can replicate that a little bit more, obviously it'll help his chances.
Starting point is 00:34:01 But I think both sides are reside to the fact that we're going to move on eventually. it's just a matter of when. Let me close on this. Yesterday, I believe, you were on with Secarison Price and mentioning Venberg's name and as a potential option, Alexander Venberg with the San Jose Sharks,
Starting point is 00:34:21 as a potential option to fill the spot previously held until Tom Wilson's neutral zone hit on Sunday of Philippeal on the second line. I was on today, and one of the things that I mentioned, and maybe my scenario, was probably too long. Yours is more immediate. And I think that's where Vancouver's at. So I said, the guy to watch if you're Vancouver is Cal Richie. Not because you're going to get
Starting point is 00:34:45 Cal Richie because you're not. But he's in the American League playing for the Bridgeport Islanders. We just came off the injuries, played two games, got two points for Rocky Thompson squad. The belief around is that if Cal Richie goes out of the American League where he is right now, rips it up for 20 or 30 games, they'll call him up. Allenders will call him up, and that'll force Matthew Darsh to make a decision on J.G. Pajot. But my scenario is like December or January. I don't know that Vancouver can last that long and say, come on, Cal Richie, tear it up in the H.L so we can maybe have a shot at getting Pajos.
Starting point is 00:35:24 How desperate is it right now in Vancouver? It sounds pretty desperate. Like, I mean, you know, you talk to, or you listen to the, you know, the fans out there, and the sky is falling pretty much every day. It's an interesting fan base, a very passionate one. But, like, they're in an interesting position because they don't want that to happen. They want to be able to, like,
Starting point is 00:35:48 they don't want to fall too far behind the eight ball either. They want to stay in that mix. They're kind of in that mid zone, but they're also in the thick of things. You know, with Wenberg, it's, this is another player on the Euro tour that talked about wanting to prove himself, even further this season, to gain more responsibility. And at $5 million,
Starting point is 00:36:10 I don't know if that's the direction, the right direction, unless San Jose is going to retain on that contract. And they have one retention slot left because they're still eating on a couple of guys' hurdle and Carlson. I don't know if that's the, unless they're retaining and it's a low price, which I don't anticipate, I don't know if that's the right direction for the Vancouver Canucks right now.
Starting point is 00:36:31 As much as they'd like to do something now, to kind of like heal things up a little and find at the very least some type of stopgap. I just, I don't know if that's the primary direction. It's the best utilization of their funds and their assets right now. That's why Azaka might make a little bit more sense and is making a little bit less. But Pazzo is definitely an interesting one. And there are teams that are going to look at JG going, if the Islanders aren't really in the mix, this might be an end, the Ritchie factor comes in,
Starting point is 00:36:59 then this might be a guy to pounce on. He's a UFA at the end of the season. He's got the playoff experience. He's a grinder and an energy player that a lot of playoff teams would love to get their hands on. But if the Islanders are in the thick of things, even if Richie's back into the mix, they may want to hold on to him as well. It's going to be an interesting decision, Jeff, that Darsh is going to have to make. But I agree with you.
Starting point is 00:37:22 I think it is a decision that if it does come to it, will be in a few months here, which might not align with Vancouver's desire. I listen I know the meal that I'm making here for for this particular topic is not going to be served maybe until the calendar flips I think what you're touching on more is like there's there's something that needs to be addressed here in Vancouver ASAP has to be um listen have fun tonight I know it's going to be tough to watch hockey games with you know what happening uh but we'll we'll catch up and listen continue success with earth the show's a home run continue success bell thank you buddy appreciate it Dave Panyoda from the fourth period. And you can listen to him. He's on all the shows these days too, which is great. But you can also listen to him, watch him Wednesdays, 3 o'clock Eastern, along with our fan Gaffar. It is a DFO Rundown Insiders Edition right here at our daily face-off YouTube channel.
Starting point is 00:38:25 Zach, a lot of good stuff in there from Dave. Anything jump for you? Utah. Utah being a team that's going big and pushing is fun. It's exciting. And I mean, it's also a good point about them becoming a destination. They're not just going to be out hunting for people. People will be wanting to go there, which is a very different situation than their previous location where I feel like there's probably a lot of players who kind of would have been like, I don't know, like maybe not the right timing for things. very very different situation for them right now just quick before we get to our next segment here the one player that i had i think i may have talked about it last year um the one player that i'd wondered about in the off season for utah was john tovarez on a short-term big money deal because
Starting point is 00:39:21 this team has a lot of young players specifically a lot of young forwards and And if you're Utah, you turn to Tavares and say, like, look, two years, we need you for two years. Here's $12 million, $6 million A.A.V. Come in, help our young kids. Be a pro. Teach them how to, teach them how to be pros. That was a guy that I wonder about. Obviously, he resigned with the Toronto Maple Leafs, but I really did, I really did wonder if that was going to be the play for Utah. by the way, Logan Cooley looks awesome. Logan Cooley looks so good right now. And every single game that we see, and you're not going to get, sorry Utah fans, you're not getting a hat trick every night out of Logan Cooley,
Starting point is 00:40:07 but every game that is a reasonable hand-drawn facsimile of what we saw last night out of Logan Cooley, the price just keeps going up and up and up to the point where If you're Logan Cooley negotiating a second contract here, you know, when the team re-approaches with a number, rightfully, you can probably say, no, that was yesterday's number. Yeah, exactly. This is today's, this is today's number. That's how good Logan Cooley looks. He looks fantastic, man.
Starting point is 00:40:44 He really, really does. Okay, we're going to go a little bit quicker here today. we all have things to do and I want to let you let you all escape for the weekend a little bit earlier. So, hungry for history, quickly becoming my favorite segment on this program, Hungry for History, a presentation of Uber Eats. It lets me get all the crap that I have stored up in my head that kept me single for a lot of years to get it out of my head. Uber Eats is enabling fans to maximize their fandom all season long with exclusive game day deals on the app. From Game Day Eats to paper plates and napkins, if you're hosting,
Starting point is 00:41:18 to all the ingredients you need to make your favorite game day dip. Before, during, and after the game, Uber Eats is assisting every hockey fan's hockey experience all season long. Zach, what are we serving up today on the app? So we got three across here. These ones, I think, are pretty fun. Two of them kind of coming right after each other. But either way, I'm excited about this one here. So first and foremost, we have Ron Francis in 1987.
Starting point is 00:41:54 Ron Francis picked up an assist in the Hartford Whalers 5-3 win versus Chicago for his 500th career point, which I thought was cool, coming off of them wearing Hartford jerseys last night. 1988, Mike Bossie officially announces his retirement from the NHL, and in 2002, Patrick Waugh passed Terry Sawchuck for the most games played. by an NHL goaltender with 972. I want to focus in on Mike Bossie. 1988, officially announcing his retirement from the NHL.
Starting point is 00:42:28 When you look at goal scorers, and he was maybe the best, with all the respect to a vetchkin who has the big number, the saying has always been, all goal scorers are streaky goal scores. You know who's the exception of that rule? rule, Mike Bossy. We'll go over his draft here in a couple of seconds, but if Mike Bossy hadn't retired after
Starting point is 00:42:56 10 years because of back problems, I wonder two things. One, would Ovechkin have been chasing the Mike Bossy goal scoring record? And two, could Mike Bossy have scored a thousand goals? When you look at what Mike Bossy was able to do in the NHG. consistently. And he's coming out of the Quebec League at that point. He's a smaller guy. And that was the sort of knock on him. He's not great defensively. He's not big. He's not tough, but he can score. He had seasons in the queue of 70, 84, 79, and 75 goals playing for LaValle. He gets to the NHL. Oh, he's too small. He's going to get pushed around. He's not tough enough. Take your idea of
Starting point is 00:43:41 all goal scorers or streaky goal scores and throw it out because this guy scored consistently. Rookie season 53. And then 69, 51, 61, 68, 64, 60, 51, 51, 58, 61. And then in his final season where his back issues really became a problem, he dipped down to 38. 573 goals in 752 games. This guy, when you look like pound for pound, shot for shot, goal for goal, you can make the argument strongly he was the greatest goal scorer of all time now when you look at
Starting point is 00:44:21 biggest heists in the NHL draft in the history of the draft he was taken 15th overall in 1977 by the new york islanders again he's too slight sure he's good for junior hockey he'll never score in the NHL one of the things that we've learned zach is if you have multiple picks in the first round swing for the fence on one of them take a chance there were two teams that had two picks in the first round the new york rangers they took lucian de blois and ron dougay you know the other team that had two picks in the first round was well montreal did too we're getting to get to the second no your maple leaves took john anderson and trevor johansen both for the Toronto Marlboros. I guess the scouting budget didn't allow any scouts to leave the city.
Starting point is 00:45:16 John Anderson and Trevor Johansson, two good players, especially John Anderson. I love John Anderson. John Anderson burgers, too, don't have a great restaurant chain once upon a time. But the Montreal Canadians had a pair of picks as well, one before Bossi was selected by the New York Islanders. And let's not forget, too. Mike Bossi was playing in LaValle, like down the street from Montreal. all they probably had you know scouts at every single game from mike bossy instead they took speedy mark napier who was a really good player but with all due respect he wasn't mike bossy mike bossy is the best late pick in the first round in the history of the n hl draft and what he loved to do is we talked about with brian trache how he loved to shoot between the arm and the body of the goaltender they call
Starting point is 00:46:05 that the trache hole you go look at your mike bossy highlights five hole that was his specialty and he got his shot off quick fast in the slide get the pass from trotcha and bam and generally it was between the legs any chance to get to talk about mike bossy the late mike bossy who passed away in um in 2022 um i always revel in it because he was one of the best to ever do it and like those like honesty sack like those numbers of goals every season like never lower than 51 outside of that last year in the back really became an issue 53 69 59 51 68 and it's for the guy that was too small oh i can't defend he's too small he's too too too slight skinny guy you know where's the rest of you yeah yeah yeah yeah maybe
Starting point is 00:46:53 the best goal score of all time Mike bossy unreal unreal yeah yeah those numbers every single year is just insane too that's the NHL you're talking about I know What was the line, the Brian Gianta line? Starting point is 00:47:56 to an advisor free of charge. We don't have the volume of games tonight, Zach, but we got some intriguing ones, including Dustin Wolf gets the start for the flames today against the wind in the peg. Jets, what are you looking at, my friend? Yeah, that one to see if Dustin Wolf puts up a 50 save shutout. That will be intriguing or if there's going to be one that wiggles by him and all of a sudden all the eyeballs and fingers are turning and pointing at him. the other one that is top of mind Leafs in Buffalo If the Leafs lose this one
Starting point is 00:48:37 And it gets followed by a Jay's loss It will be Like Whatever words you want to describe Like the worst morning of all time Tomorrow morning That's what it'll be here in Toronto Especially for Toronto
Starting point is 00:48:54 Sports Media Sports Talk TV whatever that will it will be that in Toronto if you pair both losses like no Riley tonight for the Leafs kneelander and Matthews they're trying their hand at the two of them playing together they switched everything up with the lines you're heading to Buffalo and the Jays are underdogs against the Dodgers at home this could be a spicy night in Toronto Jeff very uh really it it it really could. Here's something else. So the Maple Leafs are playing the Buffalo Sabres tonight. This is a home and home. So they're in Buffalo here on the Friday. This is standard. They play the Sabres on the Friday or Sabres are at home and then Sabres travel Saturday to Toronto. We've seen it a million
Starting point is 00:49:40 times. Alex Lyons playing tonight for the Buffalo Sabres. Now, since we've been on the air, I don't know whether this has been announced or not. Who's playing in Toronto? Is it the recently summoned up from Rochester, Oka Pekalukinen? Or does Colton Ellis get another start? Again, I haven't seen it since we've been on the air, so I don't know if they've named starters for both nights. But I'll just ask you bluntly.
Starting point is 00:50:13 Like, what do you think about this? If Colton Ellis plays on Saturday, what happens? Like, I'm expecting it to be Ukapakalukinen, right? Like, he's their number one guy, he's coming off injury, all of it. But Colton Ellis did have a really good game earlier this week. Does that buy him a game over Ukapakalukinen? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:50:45 Again, I'm expecting Lukinen, but if it's Ellis, is that the beginning of a goalie controversy in Buffalo? And does that mean that they're going to go with three goaltenders? And if that's true, if you're Dev and Levi. Yeah. No, I know. How do you feel about all this? Yeah, this is one of those ones where, you know, for most teams,
Starting point is 00:51:16 not to pile on the sabres here, but I feel like I'd have an idea of what they're going to do with their goalie management and moving guys around. I genuinely do not know. I don't think most of us know how they're going to play this out. And then it's just like question after question after question after each domino falls. What happens with this guy? How does this guy react?
Starting point is 00:51:34 Oh, by the way, you've got like 800 goalies that are all waiting to play. I was just sort of of the assumption that Colton Ellis was going to eventually be placed on waivers and St. Louis was going to reclaim him. and then he had that game against Detroit played great and is he going to get another start or are they going back to Lucan in here? To me, we'll find out, I guess, tomorrow morning, right? When we see who's in the starters crease in the second half of the home of Toronto Maple Leafs.
Starting point is 00:52:11 It's not announced yet, no. So that's one that your boy Jeffrey is going to be watching early tomorrow to see what happens there. Again, I'm guessing it's Lukinen. I don't know. I'd love to be on the same page, but I don't know. It's the Sabres. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:52:32 Could be Don Edwards or Dominic Cashick or Steve Shields. I wasn't even going to go that far. I was going to say, I was going to be. But sure. That's going to be ridiculous and throw it. Ah, could be Georgie. No, you went beyond that. Marty Barron.
Starting point is 00:52:51 I don't know. Carter Hardy. Could be. We don't know. Could be Huts. So anyone's seen Huts today. Is he around? Is he driving down the QEW?
Starting point is 00:52:59 We don't know. Anyway, thanks so much for the indulgence today here live from Rochester. Unfortunately, we won't be able to get to see the Rochester Americans in LaValle tonight, kids hockey tournament and all. Thanks to Dave Panyota of the fourth period and DFO Rundown Insiders Edition, Wednesdays, with our fan Gaffar, right here at our daily face-off YouTube channel.
